🤔Somebody Inside the Bank Said Something. It Didn't Matter.

On August 3, 2026, the U.S. Treasury fined UBS Financial Services $125 million.

That is the largest penalty the government has ever imposed on a brokerage for violating the Bank Secrecy Act the law that requires financial firms to watch their own transactions and tell the government when something looks wrong.

Here is what happened, in order.

2018: the first time

The government caught UBS's American brokerage arm not watching its foreign wire transfers. Its automated monitoring system had holes in it. UBS paid $14.5 million and told the government it would fix the problem.

It did not fix the problem.

2019 to 2023: the part that matters

Over the next four and a half years, more than 50,000 foreign currency wires moved through the firm without proper monitoring. Total value: more than $10 billion.

UBS did not tell the government about this.

The government found out on its own. A routine examination raised questions, an investigation followed, and only then with investigators already inside did the firm begin seriously doing what it had promised to do in 2018.

The customers

Some of the account holders had ties to Russia and Latin America. Their source of wealth raised questions. News reports had linked them to corruption, fraud, and money laundering.

And here is the line in the government's order that you should read twice:

One of UBS's own affiliates raised concerns about those news reports.

Somebody inside the building saw it. Somebody inside the building said something.

The accounts stayed open.

The cost

Hundreds of suspicious transactions went unreported. That is not a paperwork problem. Suspicious activity reports are how law enforcement finds trafficking networks, sanctions evasion, and cartel money. Those reports were never filed. Investigators never got the information. Whatever was in those wires, nobody looked.

What the government did about it

Four agencies moved on the same morning: Treasury's financial crimes unit, the SEC, FINRA, and the CFTC. The combined figure is $125 million.

UBS admitted it broke the law willfully. That word matters. It is not "we made a mistake." It is a legal admission that the violations were knowing.

The firm also has to hire an outside reviewer and go back through the missed transactions. The government specified what that review has to cover: the southwest border and cartels, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela.

Treasury named four theaters. Those are not random.

The two things worth noticing

First: the failure was not technical.

Everyone assumes these cases are about broken software. This one wasn't, or at least not only. The controls produced a warning. A person inside the organization escalated it. The outcome didn't change.

Treasury said as much in its own guidance attached to the order that real due diligence means actually assessing risk and responding to it, not documenting a risk and filing the document. The system caught it. The decision buried it.

Second: the ceiling is moving.

Five months ago, in March 2026, Treasury fined a different brokerage $80 million and called it the largest such penalty ever. Now it's $125 million.

And read the government's own wording on the new record: largest ever imposed against a broker-dealer for BSA violations to date.

To date. They left the door open on purpose.

What did not happen

UBS is still operating. Nobody was severed from the financial system. Nobody lost a charter.

The bank paid.

That is the whole pattern, and it is worth sitting with. When the institution is small, it gets cut off. When the institution is large, it gets invoiced.

$125 million against a bank that clears trillions is not a death sentence. It is a cost of doing business, and every firm reading that order knows exactly which category it falls into.

Timelines. Patterns. The general's words, not mine. All I did was read the receipts.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani has axed the advisors of a major nonprofit that channels private sector donations to fund city initiatives in his latest hostile act toward New York business leaders.

Hizzoner thanked the dismissed advisory board members of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City for their service in a letter obtained by Bloomberg News.

The fund also said in an email that its entire board would be disbanded – marking the first time in at least three mayoral administrations that all members were let go.

Among those who received their walking papers from the mayor include Richard Born of BD Hotels, Jeffrey Gural, chairman of GFP Real Estate; Alex Katz, senior managing director at Blackstone Inc.; Edward Skyler, Citigroup Inc.’s head of enterprise services and public affairs; and James Whelan, president of the Real Estate Board of New York.

The mayor’s office told Bloomberg it would be replacing the released board members later this year.

“The creation of a new advisory board is an important next step in reimagining how philanthropy can augment, but not replace, public dollars and public goods, and we are eager to share more about our new board of advisors later this year,” Mamdani senior advisor Dora Pekec said in a statement to The Post.

The fund, which had $16.4 million cash on hand according to its 2025 tax filing, championed fundraising efforts in part by leveraging relationships with New York’s business community to raise millions of dollars each year.

It’s raised hundreds of millions since its 1995 inception – including a staggering $107 million to support family members of rescue workers killed or injured in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

During the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fund raised $54.5 million for an emergency relief fund that covered meals and personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers.

But Mamdani started eroding the fund’s lucrative business connections as soon as he took office in April, appointing a former dockworker and a high school teacher to serve on the fund’s board of directors.

“In January, our city entered a new era – one that demands our city government reflect our communities,” Pekec said. “The building of a new Mayor’s Fund, built on the ethos of putting those directly impacted in the rooms where decisions are made, is a continuation of that work.”

The move is the continuation of an anti-business throughline in the Mamdani administration, which has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to spit in the face of big business and wealthy New Yorkers.

Curious Cometary Knots in the Helix Nebula

What causes unusual knots of gas and dust in planetary nebulas? Seen also in the Ring Nebula, the Dumbbell Nebula and NGC 2392, the knots' existence was not initially predicted, and their origins are still not well understood. Pictured here is a fascinating image of part of the Helix Nebula by the James Webb Space Telescope showing tremendous detail in infrared light. The cometary knots have masses similar to the Earth but have sizes typically several times the orbit of Pluto. One hypothesis for the fragmentation and evolution of the knots includes existing gas being driven out by a less dense but highly energetic stellar wind of the central evolving star. The Helix Nebula is one of the closest examples of a planetary nebula created at the end of the life of a Sun-like star. Given a technical designation of NGC 7293, the Helix Nebula lies about 650 light-years away towards the constellation of Water Carrier (Aquarius).
