Melvin Capital ends month with over $8 billion in assets after investors added cash

Melvin Capital, the hedge fund at the center of the GameStop drama, lost 53% in January but received commitments for fresh cash from investors in the last days of the month, a source familiar with the fund said on Sunday. Melvin ended January with more than $8 billion in assets after having started the year with roughly $12.5 billion in assets, the source said.

The firm, founded in 2014 by Gabe Plotkin, had bet that ailing video game retailer GameStop’s stock, which traded at less than $5 five months ago, would fall. But a wave of retail investors, comparing notes on social media platform Reddit and using online trading app Robinhood, took the other side of Plotkin’s trade to send the stock up 1,625% this month to close at $325 on Friday. Hedge funds Point72 Asset Management and Citadel gave a $2.75 billion capital infusion to Melvin Capital earlier in the week, enabling it to close out that position with a large loss.

“The fund’s portfolio liquidity is strong. Use of leverage is at the lowest level since Melvin Capital’s inception in 2014,” the source said.

Citadel lost less than 1% on its Melvin position in its flagship fund in January, a person familiar with the matter said on Sunday.

As news of losses at many hedge funds spread in recent days, speculation mounted about which firms might be forced to shut their doors. Several investors and fund managers said clients have been more patient with certain firms that have a long and strong track record, likely allowing them to survive this month’s deep losses.

Levin highlighted how Biden ran on uniting the country. He then noted that Biden’s actions have instead been about “conformity” rather than uniting the country.

“Joe Biden made much of the word unity,” Levin stated. “Nothing that Joe Biden has done since his inauguration speech demonstrates any form of unity. It’s conformity. Conformity. He’s there proudly signing one executive order after another. These executive orders do what? Taxpayer-paid-for abortion on demand, even one minute before birth. The Paris climate accords, which ought to be a treaty, which ties our hands, plus his war on American energy. Who benefits from that? Communist China, of course. So, that does more damage to us than communist Chinese could ever hope to do. Open borders. The Iran deal. Well, they finally got Donald Trump. But he sure scared the bejesus out of them. It took a massive five-year campaign of hysteria, of fear and hate, orchestrated by all wings of the Ruling Elite, from the respectable right to the activist left. The irony, of course, is that the last actions of Trump’s presidency highlighted how little of a threat he, as an individual, truly was to the deep corruption in America’s government. Lil Wayne may be free, but figures like Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, and Ross Ulbricht are not. The Fed’s big fat bubble has only gotten larger as Wall Street has thrived, while American workers continue to be "discriminated against."

If historians look back at simply the Trump administration’s policy legacy, the controversial nature of his tenure may confuse. A record of tax cuts, deregulation, runaway spending, an Israeli-Saudi-focused Middle East policy, criminal justice reform, and stacking the federal court with conservative judges on paper seems firmly aligned with the Republican Party of the modern era. Compromises on gun issues, the inability to replace Obamacare—or even reject its core tenets. His calls for larger stimulus relief would perhaps lead some to believe that he was relatively moderate in the current environment.

Looking back, Trump’s most radical act of governance may be his simple embrace of federalism in the face of the coronavirus. Whether this stemmed from a genuine belief in the limits of practical federal power or a desire to have the flexibility to blame governors if a state’s response becPost too long. As Murray Rothbard illustrated in Anatomy of the State, "What the State fears above all, of course, is any fundamental threat to its own power and its own existence." A vital part of the state’s existence is its ability to justify its action with a mantle of "legitimacy"—which in an age of democracy comes from the notion of the "consent of the governed."

The result of 50+ million Americans viewing the next president as a fraud imposed on the people is an inauguration taking place in a Washington, DC, that resembles a warzone, surrounded by soldiers whom the regime does not trust with their own ammo.

The downside of America’s regime acting from a place of fear is that it is likely to ruthlessly lash out like most violent predators tend to do. Since the actions at the Capitol on January 6, the corporate press has elevated a collection of "terrorism experts" who have explicitly called for the tools formed in the war on terror to be turned inward to deal with the growing Trump "insurrectionist threat."

As Glenn Greenwald notes, "No speculation is needed. Those who wield power are demanding it."

The upside is that the tremendous growth of federal powers has always been dependent upon the public’s understanding that such power was being wielded in their own defense. Therefore, democracy has, rather than being a public check against tyranny, more often been a way of peacefully empowering officials to get away with abuses that autocrats could only manage with explicit violence.

- 70% have only one short-term adverse event reported.

- The toxic batches are distributed among all 50 US states.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended candidate filing for the 2022 primary elections and ordered that the primaries be delayed until May 17.

The court granted an injunction in response to legal challenges related to the state’s new congressional and legislative district maps. Primaries were originally scheduled to be held on March 8.

“In light of the great public interest in the subject matter of these cases, the importance of the issues to the constitutional jurisprudence of this state and the need for urgency in reaching a final resolution on the merits at the earliest possible opportunity, the court grants a preliminary injunction and temporarily stays the candidate-filing period for the 2022 elections for all offices until such time as a final judgment on the merits of the plaintiffs’ claims, including any appeals, is entered and a remedy, if any is required, has been ordered,” the court said in its order.

Voting rights groups are challenging the election maps drawn by the legislature's Republican majority, arguing they're unfair gerrymanders meant to lock in GOP power. The groups complain that the new maps, approved last month, are so biased toward Republicans that they violate voters' constitutional right to a free and fair election.

The new voting maps are expected to deliver wins for Republicans in at least 10 of the state's 14 U.S. House districts, and likely supermajorities in the state House and the state Senate, despite an electorate that's politically nearly evenly split.

When the billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his prison cell back in August of 2019, many were skeptical that he had actually committed suicide, as his death seemed way too convenient for the people in power who he could possibly incriminate. Now, some new evidence has come to light suggesting that he really did not commit suicide.

Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) records that were obtained by the New York Times show that in the days leading up to his death, Epstein had repeatedly said that he was not suicidal. Medical staffers even described him as “cooperative,” “future-oriented,” “goal-directed,” and “psychologically stable.”

These records include extensive psychological examinations of Epstein that show that he “adamantly” told psychologists at the New York City prison where he was being held that he had “no interest in killing himself,” adding that he “would not do that” to himself even if. he wanted to because he was a “coward” who was terrified of physical pain. Days before his death, Epstein was also saying that he had “lots to do for [his] legal case” and that “being alive is fun,” adding that “it would be crazy” to commit suicide because he “has a wonderful life.”

“Mr. Epstein stated ‘I have no interest in killing myself,'” reads one of the BOP documents. “He explained although his situation is ‘not perfect’ due to his being incarcerated, he noted that he has ‘lots to do for [his] legal case.’ He described having a ‘wonderful life,’ to include interactions with ‘interesting people and projects.’ He said ‘it would be crPost too long. U.S. Prosecutors Want to ‘Break’ Ghislaine Maxwell, Her Brother Alleges

Some very famous people should be getting nervous

The trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged former madam of the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is finally set to begin on Monday. The 59-year-old disgraced British socialite’s brother Ian Maxwell is now speaking out to describe this as “the most over-hyped trial of the century,” accusing U.S. prosecutors of trying to “break” his sister.

Ian told The Associated Press that this is “the most over-hyped trial of the century without a doubt. This is designed to break her; I can’t see any other way to read it. … And she will not be broken because she believes completely in her innocence, and she is going to give the best account she can.”

Maxwell has been accused of grooming underage girls for sex with Epstein and sometimes participating in the abuse herself. She has been in custody for 17 months, with the vast majority of that time being in solitary confinement after Judge Alison Nathan denied her bail requests multiple times.

At the time of Maxwell’s arrest in July of 2020, prosecutors alleged that she was responsible for luring young girls in so that they could fall into the trap she and Epstein set for them.

A couple of points to address this nonsense- and I’m addressing this because we have far more serious problems at hand that our country is facing and this will be the end of it for me—others may have the time, I don’t:

I don’t personally know these people LW mentions, Jarrin, Hancock, nor Kyle Rittenhouse. These must be people who have caused him harm. That is something Lin should deal with. Making them my problem doesn’t change anything. And if Lin raised money for Kyle Rittenhouse, great!

I don’t know this Pegasus thing LW mentions. I’ve had relationships with lots of people and entities, this is not one that I know.

It’s sad that LW has had threats to his family. Doesn’t make it right at all but join the club. That’s what the psychos we deal with do…they threaten us because they fear us.

Prayers and praying: I pray a lot, always have and always will. As I’ve said, they can take away your freedom but never your faith. If I’ve said prayers, they’re meant for good purposes, nothing more nothing less. Period.

Whatever your religion, you decide. Mine is of the Catholic faith…and I do believe we are one nation under God. The left is trying to cause division and are desperate to remove God from everything (let’s not let them do that).

Earning a living, or better stated, recovering lost earnings and costs…you bet. America got me through the past four years, I trust they’ll stand by me in the future.

An NYPD officer killed himself inside his car on Long Island on Monday, police sources said.

The officer, a nine-year veteran of the force, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at a marina in Mastic Beach, according to police sources.

The officer worked for Transit District 20, which is headquartered in Queens.

The cop is believed to be the fourth NYPD officer to commit suicide this year.

In 2019, 10 NYPD cops took their own lives, which was double the rate of past years.

The crisis led the department to create a new confidential suicide prevention program called “Finest Care” that offers free treatment from New York-Presbyterian psychiatrists and psychologists.

Under the program, cops can seek help anonymously at the hospital system.

Democrats and other critics of former President Trump celebrated when criminal charges were leveled against Stephen Bannon late last week.

But the political downside of the pursuit of Bannon is becoming clearer by the day.

There’s no guarantee that the underlying purpose of the prosecution — to compel Bannon to cooperate with the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection — will work.

Bannon may ultimately prefer the risk of a fairly short jail sentence, and the martyrdom it would confer on him from Trump supporters, over testifying.

Even if he were to cooperate, the question then becomes whether the public will learn anything more damning than it already knows about Bannon and his former boss.

After all, Bannon said on his podcast the day before the riot that “all hell is going to break loose tomorrow.” And Trump’s central role in inciting the insurrection was so blatant that he became the first president in American history to be impeached twice.

Above all, the criminal case has given Bannon the biggest platform he has enjoyed in years.

Cryptocurrencies post record inflows in latest week -CoinShares data

Cryptocurrency products and funds had record inflows last week to the tune of $1.5 billion, their 10th straight week of investments, as optimism soared with the trading of bitcoin exchange traded funds, a report from digital asset manager CoinShares showed on Monday.

Inflows so far this year hit $8 billion, far exceeding the record set for the whole of 2020 of $6.7 billion, the data showed as of the week ended Oct. 22. Total assets under management also hit a new record of $79.2 billion, although it ended the week at $76.7 billion. The bulk of inflows for the sixth straight week went to Bitcoin, with $1.45 billion, data showed. Inflows to the world’s largest cryptocurrency year-to-date amounted to $6.1 billion. The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF and the Valkyrie Bitcoin Strategy ETF debuted last week, a defining moment for the crypto industry that is expected to lure more inflows from big institutional investors.

That pushed bitcoin to an all-time peak of $67,016.50. It was last up 4.6% at $63,682.

Ethereum, meanwhile, saw outflows for a third consecutive week totaling $1.4 million. CoinShares believed that the outflows were due to minor profit-taking as the price approaches record highs. Ether, the currency for the Ethereum blockchain, last exchanged hands at $4,224.30, up 3.5%. Other altcoins saw inflows. Solana, Cardano and Binance posted inflows totaling $8.1 million, $5.3 million and $1.8 million, respectively. Assets under management at Grayscale and Coinshares, the two largest digital asset managers, climbed last week to $54.6 billion and $5.2 billion, respectively.
