De Beers Raises Diamond Prices Most in Years

De Beers implemented its biggest price increase for diamonds in years as the industry starts bouncing back from the pandemic-induced shutdown.

The world’s biggest diamond producer raised prices by about 5% at its first sale of the year, according to people familiar with the situation who asked not to be identified because the information is private. The increases mostly applied to stones bigger than 1 carat, the people said.

The diamond industry has surprised many by the speed of its recovery after being brought to a complete standstill in the first half of last year. Crucial holiday sales in the U.S. and China were strong, while a shortage of stock held by industry middlemen created strong demand.

De Beers doesn’t publicize price changes, but it’s probably one of the steepest increases since the early part of last decade, the people said. A spokesman for De Beers declined to comment.

There were signs of recovery in the fourth quarter of 2020 as rough-diamond buyers started replenishing stocks to prepare for the industry’s most important selling period: Thanksgiving to the Chinese New Year. De Beers’s business started rebounding, and the Anglo American Plc unit was able to edge prices higher in the last sale of the year in December.

That’s in stark contrast to the industry’s fortunes at the early stages of the pandemic, when sales collapsed, and diamond retailers and factories closed. De Beers responded by curtailing production, leading to a tighter supply just as shoppers returned to stores in parts of China and the U.S.

This is more than a simple fork in the road, it’s truly “biblical,” as some have promised these days would be. The fork is between heaven and hell, not just for America but for the world. Dark days of tyranny or the light of freedom and liberty. Good versus evil.

Trump knows the stakes as he talked about this before and during his presidency. He knows what’s in store for his family, supporters, and all the good he did in four years, cancelled, and erased, relegated to media revision to the point that woke history books will place Trump in the same category as Hitler, Stalin, and Mao.

If he strikes out this week, that’s on him. After four years as commander in chief, the fact that none of the promised swamp draining happened is his fault. He knows how to be the boss. Was he compromised or was this all big but empty talk? Did he endure four years of constant ridicule and attack just to slink away at the end after a stolen election? We’ll see.

Declassifications are finally happening, but too little and too late to make any difference. Perhaps a year or two ago they would have been relevant, but now so what? The media won’t report it, and no one will investigate or punish the wrong doers. Forget the FBI, DOJ, or Congress, who see nothing wrong and want to move along. If a declassification falls in the forest but no one cares to investigate it, does it make a sound?

Who will be left to stop any of this? Certainly not elected Republicans who sat by while this all happened, pretending not to see it or else encouraging it. Is Trump holding a royal flush ready to play this week? Many think so but the game is almost over. I’m losing optimism but also hope Trump proves me wrong.

This week is it, the last pitch of the game, a home run or strike three. America and the world are either awakened or reset. Time to buckle up and pray as there will be no do over.

Europe’s Firms Face $720 Billion Capital Gap to Fund Recovery

The European Union needs to find new ways to recapitalize businesses so that the hole on corporate balance sheets doesn’t derail the recovery, according to a financial-industry group.

Companies face an equity shortfall of as much as 600 billion euros ($724 billion), as existing government programs and private funding won’t suffice to fully cover the roughly 1 trillion euros that businesses need to replace losses suffered during coronavirus restrictions, the Association for Financial Markets in Europe said in a report on Tuesday. Authorities including the European Central Bank and the European Commission have warned about corporate vulnerabilities after businesses were driven to bank loans and bond issuances to survive. Industry groups have called on politicians to help viable firms clean up their balance sheets to enable future investments.

“Until now government subsidies, debt issuance and bank lending have kept many EU businesses afloat, but public funding and debt alone cannot be solely relied upon going forward,” AFME Chief Executive Officer Adam Farkas said in the report. “For European businesses to recover from the economic crisis, alternative types and sources of funding will be required to help mitigate their mounting debt burden.” European countries have extended restrictions to limit the spread of the coronavirus, causing economists to downgrade their forecasts for this year. There’s a “clear risk” that firms’ capitalization needs could rise even further as the current wave of infections drags on, AFME said in the report co-authored with PwC.

Complicating the matter is that smaller companies in the EU typically rely on banks for their financing and often lack access to capital markets. Family-owned businesses are also usually reluctant to give up control by raising equity.

One solution could be to put greater emphasis on so-called hybrid instruments, which are already popular in some countries but not common among European companies, AFME said. Investors also face a fragmented regulatory landscape governing these instruments, potentially reducing liquidity.

“With greater alignment in regulatory and tax treatment of hybrids across the EU and with greater corporate awareness of the available options, hybrids could offer a helpful solution to accelerate the exit of government support schemes and support smaller corporates struggling to access capital markets,” AFME said. A new instrument could be developed at the EU level, drawing on experience from member states, it said.

The EU has long tried to beef up its capital markets by harmonizing regulations, but little progress has been made in recent years. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the bloc rolled back some regulations, including on investment research, to prop up financial markets and help companies secure financing from a range of sources. Policy makers should also consider boosting existing programs designed to help firms recapitalize, such as a 25 billion-euro guarantee fund at the European Investment Bank that’s meant to generate as much as 200 billion euros in financing through leverage.

Guo Shuqing, chairman of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, said the accusations are a big “misunderstanding” of how its economy operates. China on Monday reported economic growth that exceeded its pre-pandemic rates in the fourth quarter, enabling it to post a full-year expansion as major peers suffered contractions. While growth in 2020 was the slowest in four decades, the outperformance meant that China increased its share of the world economy at the fastest pace on record, according to World Bank estimates.

In the past decade, China contributed nearly 30% on average to the world’s economic growth, Guo said. The competitiveness of Chinese products didn’t come at the cost of hurting its workers’ interest, he said.

The death of critical thought has been a slow and painful process, one by 1,000 cuts rather than one ushered in overnight, but certainly one that is prevalent around the world today. One of the most difficult debates one can ever have with another person is to convince someone that he or she does not understand something that he or she firmly believes he or she understands. And such misguided delusions lead to delusional arguments:

“So, where did you go to school?”

Usually, such empty-calorie questions are posed by graduates from the "elite" schools around the world in the hopes that they can browbeat a person into conceding to them based on academic pedigree alone. Academic pedigree has nothing to do with critical thinking skills unless one attended a specialized school focused solely on critical thinking.

“What did you major in?”

Possession of an analytical major or even a science major degree does not necessarily mean one possesses strong critical thinking skills (i.e. Dr. Fauci of the WHO is a prime example of an uneducated person that has a medical degree, as he is an endless abyss of misinformation regarding things he has said about the current virus used to lockdown economies around the world, to once even stating that HIV transmission could happen through casual contact like touching the skin or shaking hands with an infected person.) If you’re old enough to remember when HIV was a novel virus not yet well understood because the science behind it was still theoretical, millions of people were terrified of being around people that were infected with HIV, specifically due to charlatans like Fauci that spread false speculations about people potentially contracting HIV from infected people through casual contact with infected people. History will prove me to be 100% right about condemning Fauci for spreading as much misinformation about this current virus as he once did about HIV not because he has any interest in what in our best interests, but specifically because his misinformation helps solidify the agenda of the black-hearted oligarchs for whom he works.

“You think you know more than Warren Buffet or Jamie Dimon?”

This argument is a fallacy of logic that equates the accumulation of material wealth with intellect, even though there is zero correlation between wealth and intellect. Such an argument also indicates a complete lack of understanding of the rigged economic and banking system and a delusional belief that we all operate, rich and poor, on a level playing field with equal opportunity provided to all; and finally, a fallacious argument we’ve heard repeated dozens of times within the past year, repeated by those that tend to be delusional about their level of intellect:

“You can’t argue with science. I’m quoting science so that’s a fact whereas your quoting an opinion.”

Any real scientist would laugh at this statement as every scientist, no matter the field of study, realizes that there is an immense amount of knowledge in their field that is theoretical, with no absolute evidence of its factual basis and that science is, and has always been an evolving field of knowledge, with theories previously believed to have been true constantly upgraded, transformed and sometimes even fully discredited as the research and knowledge about certain theories becomes greater over time. Consequently, the irony is that almost none of the talking heads we’ve seen in the mass media over the past twelve months that have used the “science argument” to falsely claim they were stating facts to try to discredit any narrative that opposed or provided dissent to their tyrannical lockdown efforts were actual scientists, but rather narcissists with inflated opinions of their intellect that failed to understand that as an evolutionary field of study, many scientific statements have to remain open to debate and dissent to arrive at truth, as many scientific statements only represent the prevailing opinion at the time that is subject to significant changes and updates in light of new and better information that may be discovered at a future time.

Consequently, by appealing to “science” in their argument to shut down dissent, these narcissistic, and frankly, quite dumb, oligarchs, were shutting down the scientific process that would best lead to truth and instead, using a “science” argument to forward beliefs that only best served their interests. Shockingly, as dumb as these oligarchs are, the audience to whom they appeal are often dumber, as the audience ingests and internalizes all of their non-scientific information passed off as "science" that is instead, truly pure propaganda.

In this podcast, titled, “Answering this Question is Critical to Having a Good Financial Year,” the question I pose is to determine if you understand the methodology by which the test that is most widely used around the world to test for virus infections produces a positive test result. Most people do not understand and cannot properly explain this process. If you 100% understood how the PCR test is used to provide a positive viral infection result, you would have no doubt in your mind that all the infection data being reported is completely unscientific and 100% invalid. If you then wonder why I would equate an inability to understand an undeniable truth about the infection data being reported around the world to an inability to make smart decisions about investing, and believe there is no connection between the two, here is why there is absolutely a valid link between the two.

If one possesses the type of uncritical mind in which one can be led to unquestioningly embrace a false narrative that is created about this virus and then widely disseminated by mass media across the world, then one will undoubtedly embrace false narratives created by bankers and politicians created by the types of people that meet in Davos, Switzerland to direct global financial policy and believe all the misinformation they spread as "fact" as well. One cannot have a critical mindset in finance and have an uncritical mindset when it comes to medicine, the virus and health issues. Either one possesses a critical mindset or one possesses a compliant obedient mindset that always blindly believes narratives spread by those in power and by so-called “authority” figures like Fauci.

For example, as an example of a financial lie embraced by the majority of people, even today, most people still falsely believe that if their boss gives them a 7% raise in annual salary, that given no change in spending habits from year to year, that this 7% raise in salary make them wealthier versus the prior year. In other words, because they cannot or will not question the 1.5% to 2% inflation rates constantly provided by the banking class as the actual inflation rates in many Western and European nations, even though these fake rates should be so obviously fake to the critical mind, they don’t understand how one’s quality of life and wealth can be constantly degrading even when they keep earning more and more money every subsequent year.

phone calls into the FBI’s telephone tip line related to the U.S. Capitol attacks. I have reviewed documentation of several of those calls. In them, the caller stated that he/she was the former romantic partner of RILEY JUNE WILLIAMS (“WILLIAMS”), that he/she saw WILLIAMS depicted in video footage taken on January 6, 2021, from inside the U.S. Capitol Building. W1 stated that WILLIAMS can be seen directing crowds inside the U.S. Capitol Building up a staircase. The caller specified the uniform resource locator (“url”) for a YouTube video that

W1 also claimed to have spoken to friends of WILLIAMS, who showed W1 a video of

WILLIAMS taking a laptop computer or hard drive from Speaker Pelosi’s office. W1stated that

WILLIAMS intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell

the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service. According to W1, the transfer of the

computer device to Russia fell through for unknown reasons and WILLIAMS still has the

computer device or destroyed it. This matter remains under investigation.

There appears to be only one witness claiming the laptop theft, a former romantic partner of Williams who claims 'somoeone' showed him a video of Williams stealing a laptop from Pelosi's office.

This video is not in the public domain.

The ITV video which has been removed from YT was used by the witness only to identify Williams, and the FBI report claims that the staircase Williams is directing protesters to climb in this video does lead to Pelosi's office.

Janet Yellen, U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee for Treasury Secretary, urged lawmakers on Tuesday to “act big” on the next coronavirus relief package, adding that the benefits outweigh the costs of a higher debt burden. Biden, who will be sworn into office on Wednesday, outlined a $1.9 trillion stimulus package proposal last week, saying bold investment was needed to jump-start the economy and accelerate the distribution of vaccines to bring the virus under control.

Asked what outlays would provide the biggest “bang for the buck,” Yellen said spending on public health and widespread vaccinations was the first step. Extended unemployment and SNAP benefits, better known as food stamps, should be next, she said.

Targeting relief to people in the greatest need, and to small businesses, will create “a great deal of spending per dollar spent, they’ll create jobs throughout the economy,” Yellen said.

“Neither the president-elect, nor I, propose this relief package without an appreciation for the country’s debt burden. But right now, with interest rates at historic lows, the smartest thing we can do is act big,” Yellen, a former Federal Reserve chair, told the Senate Finance Committee.

“Even though the amount of debt relative to the economy has gone up, the interest burden hasn’t,” Yellen said, referring to the amount of money the federal government pays in interest on that debt.

Early in the pandemic, “trust the science!” could actually be used in a debate without attracting derisive laughter. But as the flip-flops, mistakes and, yes, lies have accumulated, a consensus seems to be forming that the health care authorities are no more trustworthy than the people running Congress or the Fed.

For proof, let’s start with vitamin D, which sure seems to lessen the severity of coronavirus infections. As the chart below illustrates (couldn’t find the source, but google “covid vitamin D” and you’ll find lots of studies that track with this data), people with higher levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream tend to experience covid-19 as a non-event while people low levels found the infection life-threatening. (Image 3)

There are obvious questions about causality here, so calling vitamin D a “cure” is going way too far. But if it has even a marginal effect – and the data suggest considerably more — a rational government would, you’d think, be handing out vitamin D like Halloween candy. In fact, since we’re mandating/prohibiting all kinds of other behaviors, we might expect vitamin D consumption to be required along with masks and social distancing.

Even covid-czar Anthony Fauci recently said:

“If you are deficient in vitamin D, that does have an impact on your susceptibility to infection. So I would not mind recommending — and I do it myself — taking vitamin D supplements.”

So why aren’t family-sized bottles of vitamin D arriving in the mail from the CDC? A cynic might wonder if the fact that Big Pharma doesn’t make much money from cheap, widely available supplements plays a role in the government’s apparent lack of interest.

Now about those lockdowns. Tom Woods has been producing charts that appear to show virtually no difference in virus outcomes between US states with aggressive lockdown policies and those without. California, for instance, has shuttered most of its small businesses and imposed widespread curfews, while Florida hasn’t. Here’s the result: (Image 1)

As for the rest of the world – where they’re supposedly doing better than the US – the pattern of zero correlation between lockdowns and virus spread seems to be holding. France imposed a full national lockdown in March – after which the virus spiked. Then they added mask mandates (indoor and outdoor), with fines attached. And daily new cases soared. (Image 2)

And, in what sounds more like incompetence than dishonesty, he’s apparently been answering the question “when will life go back to normal?” with whatever pops into his head at the time. In early 2020, it was the coming Autumn. In July, it was “a year or so.” More recently it’s “well into 2021.”

But the biggest and by far the most outrageous reason for this growing mistrust has to be the World Health Organization which, well, read for yourself:

The World Health Organization’s special envoy on COVID-19 urged world leaders this week to stop “using lockdowns as your primary control method.”

“We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Dr. David Nabarro said to The Spectator’s Andrew Neil. “The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.”

Nabarro went on to point out several of the negative consequences lockdowns have caused across the world, including devastating tourism industries and increased hunger and poverty.

“Just look at what’s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren’t taking their holidays,” he said. “Look what’s happened to smallholder farmers all over the world. … Look what’s happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.”

In the United States, lockdowns have been tied to increased thoughts of suicide from children, a surge in drug overdoses, an uptick in domestic violence, and a study conducted in May concluded that stress and anxiety from lockdowns could destroy seven times the years of life that lockdowns potentially save.

The health care establishment could have saved a lot of time — and embarrassment — by just asking regular people about this stuff. But then they would have made a lot less money.

I currently have a DDG and a USNS near San Diego. A DDG about halfway between San Clemente and San Diego, headed easterly toward San Diego. Most interesting is looks like two amphibious ships just to the west of San Clemente Island.

For Los Angeles Long Beach anchorage area, quite a few merchants just waiting their turn for the port facilities.

After foreigners bought a record amount of stocks in the last 12 months into October, the latest Treasury International Capital flow data shows November was a massive month for private inflows overall. After a record stretch of selling which ended in May 2020, foreign central banks bought US Treasury for 3 consecutive months in Aug, Sept and Oct, the longest stretch of buying since June 2014., but November saw the selling stretch resume, with the biggest selling since April 2020.

After 5 straight months of selling, China bought $9bn of US Treasuries in November.

Japan was a seller for the 4th straight month. Foreigners bought everything in November... for the first time since Sept 2017. Foreigners bought $9.640BN in TSYs in November, a reversal from their selling of $20.1BN in October.

They doubled down on purchases of Agencies, buying $53.39BN in November after buying $48.9BN in October.

Foreigners bought $867MM in corporate bonds, after selling $21.5BN in October.

Finally, they purchased $61.9BN in equities in November, the 7th consecutive month of purchases (and second biggest month of foreign stock purchases ever)...But what really stood out, foreigners bought a record $316 billion in US equities in the LTM period ending November 2020-cap#2 Finally, we note that while Treasury holdings overall are rising modestly, but have a long way to go to match the de-dollarization trend seen in gold holdings over the past year

Taiwan is a vibrant democracy and reliable partner of the United States, and yet for several decades the State Department has created complex internal restrictions to regulate our diplomats, service members, and other officials’ interactions with their Taiwanese counterparts. The United States government took these actions unilaterally, in an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing. No more.

Today I am announcing that I am lifting all of these self-imposed restrictions. Executive branch agencies should consider all “contact guidelines” regarding relations with Taiwan previously issued by the Department of State under authorities delegated to the Secretary of State to be null and void.

Additionally, any and all sections of the Foreign Affairs Manual or Foreign Affairs Handbook that convey authorities or otherwise purport to regulate executive branch engagement with Taiwan via any entity other than the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) are also hereby voided. The executive branch‘s relations with Taiwan are to be handled by the non-profit AIT, as stipulated in the Taiwan Relations Act.

The United States government maintains relationships with unofficial partners around the world, and Taiwan is no exception. Our two democracies share common values of individual freedom, the rule of law, and a respect for human dignity. Today’s statement recognizes that the U.S.-Taiwan relationship need not, and should not, be shackled by self-imposed restrictions of our permanent bureaucracy.

A Chinese company has developed the new multiple rocket launcher with cruise missiles and unitary rockets that hide in a container.

The new container missile system will display at the 11th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China 2016) in Zhuhai.

Universal launching module, performed as the standard maritime container-type. Putting the launcher system into a standard shipping container allows the missiles to be moved and stored without arousing suspicion, which in turn renders pre-emptive strikes against the launcher very difficult.

The container missile system has been fitted with a WS-43 miniature attack cruise missiles and module of unitary rockets from multiple launch rocket system.

The container missile system it can be mounted on the vehicle chassis or hidden inside a shipping container.

Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order that closes a longstanding, critical, security loophole for United States Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) products, one abused by those seeking to harm our country. Building upon the Trump Administration’s unprecedented actions to prevent malign actors from infiltrating our information technology and communication and services (ICTS) supply chains, this Executive Order, “Taking Additional Steps to Address the National Emergency with Respect to Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities,” reduces malign actors’ access to and ability to use United States ICTS products for nefarious purposes.

Foreign malicious cyber actors threaten our economy and national security through the theft of intellectual property and sensitive data, and by targeting United States critical infrastructure. By gaining access to United States IaaS products, foreign actors can steal the fruits of American innovation and prepare destructive attacks on our Nation’s critical infrastructure with anonymity. Malign actor abuse of United States IaaS products has played a role in every cyber incident during the last four years, including the actions resulting in the penetrations of United States firms FireEye and Solar Winds.

Today’s action by the President is a major step forward in giving our Nation’s network defenders and investigators an advantage in protecting the American people from those wishing to do us harm.
