South Africa’s Workers Protest Against Corruption

Thousands South African workers and representatives of unions staged a countrywide general strike and hit the streets on Wednesday, demanding a stronger fight against rampant corruption which they say causes “more job losses, more poverty and more unemployment.”

Calling on workers throughout the country not to go to work on Thursday, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU, stressed that “the workers need to unite in defending jobs and fighting corruption.”

COSATU also reminded of the shortcomings of law enforcement agencies in fighting corruption and gender-based violence.

“We are making a louder call for decisive state intervention in strategic sectors of the economy, the use of a variety of macroeconomic and other levers at the states’ disposal to deliberately drive industrialization, sustainable development, decent employment creation, and break historical patterns of colonial exploitation and dependence,” read the statement.

Corruption has emerged as one of the biggest threats to South African democracy and is “like cancer eating at the moral fibre of our society and eroding the moral standing of our revolution and the cause for which our people laid down their lives,” COSATU said in a proclamation.

The Congress cited the government’s 2017 figures stating that “corruption costs the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP, at least 27 billion rand (US$1.63 billion) annually” but that the COVID-19 outbreak only added to the massive corruption storm triggered by the demand for personal protective equipment.

“Even before COVID-19, we faced an economic pandemic of soaring unemployment, grinding poverty and extreme inequality,” the South African Federation of Trade Unions, SAFTU, said, adding that the pandemic destroyed 2.2 million jobs, and more than five million workers more were reduced to utter hopelessness.

The Federation also blamed capitalism itself, saying that “poverty and hunger are widespread,” and that “capitalism fails the working class and the poor, not by default, but by design.”

Capitalism flourishes “when there is a reserve army of unemployed labor, when there is discord and disunity amongst the working class and the poor, and the state takes capital’s side to increase exploitation and undermine civil liberties,” SAFTU said.

Enrollment Is Dropping In Public Schools Around the Country

Orange County, Fla., has 8,000 missing students. The Miami-Dade County public schools have 16,000 fewer than last year. Los Angeles Unified — the nation's second-largest school system — is down nearly 11,000. Charlotte-Mecklenburg in North Carolina has 5,000 missing. Utah, Virginia and Washington are reporting declines statewide.

Comprehensive national data aren't available yet, but reporting by NPR and our member stations, along with media reports from around the country, shows enrollment declines in dozens of school districts across 20 states. Large and small, rich and poor, urban and rural — in most of these districts the decline is a departure from recent trends. Over the past 15 years, data from the U.S. Education Department show that small and steady annual increases in public school enrollment have been the rule.

Six months after schools around the country shut their doors amid coronavirus lockdowns, these fall enrollment declines come as schools have been scrambling to improve remote learning offerings and to adopt safety procedures to allow buildings to open for in-person classes, sometimes just a few days a week. In many parts of the country the start of the year has been marked by multiple changes in plans, widespread confusion among teachers and families, deep concerns about safety, and worries about unequal access to technology.

"We are not alone in this," Chris Reykdal, Washington state's superintendent of public instruction, said in a statement this week announcing a 2.82% decrease in enrollment statewide, driven by a 14% drop in kindergarten. "As our nation continues to fight the spread of COVID-19, states across the country are seeing changes in K–12 enrollment as families make decisions about the safest and most effective learning environments for their children."

Reykdal said operational cuts might be looming, and schools would lobby the state for stopgap funds. "Counts are taken every month, and if these trends continue, many of our districts will need to make adjustments in the short term even as they plan for booming kindergarten and first grade classes next year."

A political action committee funded by Democratic mega­donor and billionaire George Soros has made large contributions to two upstart progressive candidates attempting to unseat Democratic prosecutors in Northern Virginia primary races.

The generous support for Arlington County commonwealth’s attorney candidate Parisa Tafti and Fairfax County commonwealth’s attorney candidate Steve Descano could shake up contests that rarely receive such national attention.

Tafti and Descano welcomed the contributions. But incumbents Theo Stamos and Raymond F. Morrogh denounced their opponents for taking the money, saying it made them beholden to the agenda of a political operative with no roots in Virginia.

The challengers received another high-profile push Monday, when a group of professional football stars who advocate for racial and social justice hosted a forum that featured Tafti and Descano. Morrogh and Stamos were also invited by the Players Coalition but had scheduling conflicts.

Soros-aligned PACs have given heavily to local prosecutor races across the country in recent years, helping tip contests to reformist Democratic candidates in Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston and elsewhere.

Criminal justice reform activists like Soros have targeted prosecutor races as one of the most direct routes to changing policy because the local offices wield wide power over who gets charged, what charges they face and who goes free on bond.

A tattooed district attorney represents a new wave of prosecutors

Tafti and Descano each received more than $50,000 in in-kind contributions from the Virginia Justice and Public Safety PAC this year, according to recently released campaign contribution figures. In-kind contributions pay for polling, mailers and other campaign services. A mailer funded by the PAC went out to Arlington residents over the weekend.

The PAC is now far and away both candidates’ largest donor, and the contributions represent sizable chunks of the $139,000 and $146,000 Tafti and Descano have raised, respectively. And thanks to the PAC’s donations, each candidate has now raised more than the incumbent in the race — both Morrogh and Stamos have raised roughly $106,000.

Tafti and Descano have staked out positions to the left of the incumbents on a range of issues, promising to end marijuana possession prosecutions, do away with cash bond and forgo death penalty prosecutions. In recent debates, both have highlighted racial disparities in prosecution, particularly for low-level drug and driving offenses.

Tafti and Descano declined to be interviewed about the donations or say how the money would be spent, but they did issue statements.

“I have the support of virtually every grassroots activist organization that supports reform in our community in addition to the support of a wide array of individuals who understand the need for change in our local criminal justice system,” Tafti said in the statement. “I welcome the support of any organization that believes in my campaign.”

Stamos said taking such a large donation from a billionaire undercut Tafti’s progressive credentials.

“I would say that out-of-state money that wants to control the outcome of a local election is disturbing,” Stamos said in an interview. “This is a community that values local civic engagement and local experience. No amount of special interest money will make up for those deficiencies.”

Stamos pointed to her 30 years of experience as a prosecutor and her role in creating a drug court and other efforts. She said the declining jail population in Arlington was proof she had pushed a progressive agenda.

Descano, a former federal prosecutor and Army helicopter pilot, said the donation from the Soros-funded PAC validates his push to remake the prosecutor’s office in Fairfax County.

“If we want real criminal justice reform where it matters most, then that change starts here at home,” Descano said in his statement. “That’s why I’m so encouraged by all of the support my vision for progressive criminal justice reform has received.”

Doctors dispute claims that Trump's coronavirus treatment was developed with human fetal tissue

Doctors on Friday disputed reports that the treatment President Trump underwent after testing positive for the coronavirus was developed using tissue from an aborted fetus in contradiction of Trump's anti-fetal tissue research policy. Led by David Prentice, research director of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, an anti-abortion think tank, the doctors told reporters that the antibody cocktail Trump received last week was "not manufactured in any way using human fetal or embryonic cells." However, Prentice did note that the treatment was "tested" using a fetal cell line from the 1970s, prior to being administered to Trump. "The drug is still tainted by the stem cell or aborted fetal tissue cell line," he said. "But it's just not tainted in any of the ways that people claim it is." The Trump administration on Thursday drew criticism after a report in the New York Times stated that Regeneron, the company responsible for developing Trump's treatment, used aborted fetal cell lines in the production of the drug cocktail. Regeneron said in a statement that fetal cell lines were used in "testing" but that they "weren’t used in any other way, and fetal tissue was not used in the research."

Trump, who touted the drug cocktail as a "cure," signed an order last year all but halting federal funding to research involving aborted fetal material. The order stated that no new fetal tissue may be used in government-funded research after the signing of the order. Prentice defended Trump's treatment by pointing to this section of the order, saying that the use of fetal material in testing, while not ideal for anti-abortion activists, was not an instance of testing with "fresh, aborted fetal tissue or any new cells." "The Trump administration has actually continued a long-standing policy regarding these fetal cell lines," he said of the lines used in Regeneron's testing. "Fetal cell lines and fetal cell line research, with those particular cells, has never been curtailed."

Research involving fetal cell lines and embryonic stem cells has, for the past several decades, been a point of contention for anti-abortion activists, many of whom say it poses ethical dilemmas regarding the dignity of human life. Trump's 2019 order addressed these concerns, saying that "promoting the dignity of human life from conception to natural death is one of the very top priorities" of the president's administration. The coronavirus pandemic brought the issue back to the fore. In July, the International Society for Stem Cell Research sent a letter to the National Institutes of Health, citing the "valuable properties" of fetal material in vaccine development. The NIH has rejected all but one of the proposals this year for research involving aborted fetuses.

This update from the UK thread proposes the idea that the London Traffic Cam/LMI6 pics could be a lot earlier than previously thot. Let me start by saying we think we have a "bookend" at March 2014 due to a fatal motorcyclist accident in which the driver struck a low hooped arrow sign indicating 'keep left'. This occurred March 4, 2014. Immediately thereafter a family memorial of flowers was at the site and the deadly sign removed. Please go to UK thread to inquire about coroner's report, pics. I need to keep moving on this. Although we had the ROT1 pic of the Moon through London Eye, we never had an independent source to compare against to give us any idea of an actual lunar altitude in order to run some night sky simulations until we found a vid with an actual date (and time determined by us to be 7:53pm). We did London night sky sims which yielded a Moon altitude of 6.90 degrees.

Keep in mind our cameraman is on the street and some 500 feet down Victoria Embankment and not high up on Hungerford Bridge. This may account for the fact that is is impossible to find a Moon at 151.5 degrees at such a a low altitude.

Best lowest altitudes possible are 12.9 to 13.7 degrees (for the entire year).

Now independently, (Thank you Boatfag) we estimated the compass bearing from our traffic cam on Hungerford Bridge to the center of LE(as seen in ROT1) to be 151.5 degrees. In running any night sky simulation, we must look from our Traffic cam position using 151.5 degrees.

Anons, I have looked from March 2013 to March 2014 (excluding warm months) and I find impossibly high Moon altitudes during Winter months, 36 degrees to over 50 degrees altitude. There is a saying, "When the Sun is high (Summer), the Moon is low. When the Sun is low (Winter), the Moon is high."

Unfortunately, for the notion that the NSA traffic cam pics are in Winter, the Moon's high altitudes, and maybe pictorial evidence may be pointing to a cold evening in Spring 2013. First, see pics related of London Plane Trees that line the London Embankment. Related to Sycamores, they are deciduous and lose their leaves in Winter. The Traffic cam pics and LMI6 pic are def picking up some greenery in the treetops. The first buds and leaves of Spring?

Having said that now I can tell you I have found some good matches for bearing, altitude, and lateness of time. This relates to our observation that both ROT1 and LMI6 pics depict a high tide (probably rising yet with an hour or so before full high tide.

How do we know what the tides were you ask? We asked for them. From the London Port Authority. Can get into that if you like over in the UK thread.

There is current discussion ongoing about certain construction shrouding on one of the towers at Westminster Hall. This white shrouding can actually be seen in LMI6 and Traffic cam pics. Some anons think its appearance is that of Sept. 2013. But, there was a prior shrouding that took place that Spring…

Customs and Border Protection seized nearly 1,300 pounds of pastries containing egg products that “pose a high risk to American agriculture” and health entering the country via China. According to Cincinnati Customs and Border Protection, the egg products inside the pastries “pose a high risk to American agriculture” and contain diseases such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and Virulent Newcastle Disease: “Mooncakes, which are traditionally given to family members and business associates during this holiday, are sweet pastries filled with lotus seed or bean paste and salted duck egg yolks. These pastries are highly valued and can cost hundreds of dollars; however, because of animal diseases endemic to many Southwest Asia countries, egg products from that region pose a high risk to American agriculture. China and most Southwest Asian counties are hosts to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and Virulent Newcastle Disease (vND).”

The seizure came during the agency’s Special Operation “Over the Moon,” which led to the confiscation of 1,272 pounds of mooncakes and 359 pounds of other prohibited items.

Scientists call for independent probe of Canadian professor's research linking fluoride to lower IQ

TORONTO – A group of international scientists is urging a Canadian university to establish an independent investigation into one of its professor's research that links fluoride in drinking water to lower intelligence in children.

The 14 experts and researchers from six different nations issued a letter last month to York University in Toronto asking for a review of Christine Till's work on fluoridation to determine whether her "ideology is being misrepresented as science."

"We believe that some or all of Dr. Christine Till's fluoride publications might well contain significant error… Therefore, we are acting on our moral duty to make this belief known by asking you to establish an international, independent, expert committee to determine whether our concerns are justified," the letter read.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is present in nearly all water sources and is associated with reduced tooth decay. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says fluoride molecules can strengthen teeth by hardening tooth enamel, contributing to tooth surface re-mineralization, and deterring oral bacteria.

For decades, governments around the world have added fluoride to public drinking water to reduce rates of tooth decay in children and adults.

Till and Simon Fraser University professor Bruce Lanphear conducted an observational study in August 2019 looking at 512 mother-child pairs from six major Canadian cities, 40 per cent of which lived in communities with fluoridated municipal water.

The study found that children whose mothers were exposed to higher levels of fluoride in their tap water during pregnancy scored lower on IQ tests than those with mothers who had less exposure while pregnant.

Signatories behind the letter issued to York University say there is not a proven cause-and-effect relationship between fluoride and IQ scores.

Till told CTVNews.ca that the letter is a "glaring misrepresentation of the rigour" of her research.

"Our study underwent extensive scrutiny to meet the scientific standards for publishing in the highest-ranking pediatric journal in the world. Policy makers, health professionals and scientists must have access to all high-quality evidence to make informed decisions," Till said in an email on Thursday.

"It would be unacceptable to censor scientific results because they do not conform to a certain set of beliefs," she added.

Jennifer Meyer, a population health sciences professor at Alaska's College of Health and one of the letters signatories said Till's study is "egregious and deviates sharply" from accepted scientific practices.

"Professor Till and Dr. Lanphear appear to be engaged in trying to prove, through publication of questionable studies, that their claims are somehow rigorous while ignoring other studies which have found no such associations," Meyer said in an email on Wednesday.

Delaware Pizza Shop Cancels Event for Republican Senate Candidate After Pressure From BLM

Grotto Pizza in Delaware has cancelled a campaign event for America First senate candidate Lauren Witzke following a pressure campaign from the left.

The owner of the pizza joint then opted to go to the media and lie about their reason for the last-minute cancellation.

After Witzke announced her meet and greet at the venue, the left set up petitions and began a harassment campaign to get the owner to cancel the event. Their mob tactics worked, and less than 24 hours before the event, the shop posted on Facebook that it had been cancelled.

Grotto Pizza posted on Facebook that the shop “welcomes a community of diversity which includes differences in age, sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion and political perspective.”

“Over the past 24 hours, we were informed a private event scheduled in our Pennsylvania Avenue location this evening was actually a political ‘meet and greet’ and actively being promoted by the event organizer,” reads the Facebook post from Grotto Pizza. “Once this information was confirmed, we reached out to the organizer of the event to inform them Grotto Pizza will not allow the event to proceed in our restaurant.”

“We do not allow campaign events in any of our locations and do not support any specific candidates in any elections,” the post continues.

Witzke had personally spoke to the manager, Dan Jeffers, who knew that it was a political event at the time that it was booked.

When contacted by Gateway Pundit, Jeffers would not comment about the event or his conversation with Witzke.

The announcement about the cancellation came after a social media pressure campaign against the event by Black Lives Matter activists Kristina Kelly and Keandra Mcdole, and a Change.org petition with 294 signatures.

An unearthed video revealed Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors declaring she and her fellow organizers as “trained Marxists.” “We actually do have an ideological frame. Myself and Alicia in particular, we’re trained organizers. We are trained Marxists. We are super versed on ideological theories,” she continued, referencing fellow Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza. Canadian Judge Denies Huawei CFO’s Request for Access to Confidential Documents

A Canadian judge in a ruling denied Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou’s request for access to confidential documents.

“The privilege claims asserted by the Attorney General are upheld except for the portion of Ms. Henchey’s December 4, 12:44 pm email in EXT_RESP-00236 over which litigation and public interest privilege was claimed,” Associate Chief Justice Heather Holmes said in the ruling on Friday.

Holmes motivated her decision citing government attorneys’ confidentiality agreements with other parties.

A similar request was denied by a Federal Court judge in August.

The judge did order the release of a part of one email sent by the Canadian Justice Department’s International Assistance Group General Director Janet Henchey, so not to mislead the defence and the public concerning an extract that has already been disclosed.

Meng had sought access to confidential documents insisting that they contain evidence of unlawful actions by the Canadian authorities.

The decision is another blow to Meng, who is wanted by US authorities for her alleged role in violating sanctions against Iran. The US Justice Department alleges that Meng committed financial transgressions by misleading multinational financial conglomerate, HSBC, into approving more than $100 million in transactions that contravened US sanctions on Iran from 2010 to 2014.

Holmes previously ruled against Meng’s bid to scrap the extradition proceedings in May.

Meng’s detention has led to a deterioration of Sino-Canadian relations and, according to Canadian officials, was allegedly a contributing factor to the arrest of two Canadian nationals - former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor – on charges of espionage in China.

Both Beijing and Ottawa view the detention of their nationals as political incidents.

South Los Angeles: Woman Finds Discarded Ballots Near Drive-Thru ATM

A woman in South Los Angeles told local media that she found voter ballots on the ground at a Bank of America drive-thru.

“I guess most people were just driving over them and ignoring them,” Kandace Rushiddin told CBS Los Angeles. “So I took my paper towel and grabbed the ones I could.”

“You know, is this intentional?” she added. “Is this meant to suppress the vote? I don’t know.”

The Bank of America is located at 29th and Crenshaw Boulevard. It is unclear who discarded the ballots and why.

“You know, I know lies are being told,” Rushiddin continued. “People are talking about they found them in creeks, and that turned out to be a lie. So I’m thinking, ‘OK, this isn’t happening,’ and then what do I drive up on? You know, it’s just very disheartening.”

The ballots were said to be addressed to residents of an apartment building roughly one mile away from the bank.

“That’s scary,” said one building resident. “But, honestly, our building constantly gets broken into.”

“It’s worrisome, because how are you going to vote?” she added. “Or some people might still be waiting for their ballots thinking that they’ll just come later and then not get them, and by the time they realize and ask for another one, it might be too late.”

The Los Angeles County Registrar’s office did not comment on the matter.

Hillary Clinton told investigators that she wasn't aware that a "C" marking in emails she received on her private server indicated that the information was classified at the "confidential" level, according to documents that the FBI released on Friday.

The State Department determined that one email chain contained information that is classified at the "confidential" level, according to the documents.

But the emails apparently didn't contain any header or footer markings indicating that some information in the message was classified.

The FBI described what it found:

"The FBI identified three email chains, encompassing eight individual email exchanges to or from Clinton's personal email accounts, which contained at least one paragraph marked '(C),' a marking ostensibly indicating the presence of information classified at the CONFIDENTIAL level."

The State Department didn't specify whether the information in the emails was classified at the time the messages were sent, but markings meant to indicate that the information is "confidential" suggests that it might have been.

Although one email chain contained information that is classified, the other two chains referenced in the FBI documents are unclassified.

When presented with the findings, Clinton told investigators that she wasn't aware of what the markings meant. From the FBI notes:

"Clinton stated that she did not know what the '(C)' meant at the beginning of the paragraphs and speculated it was referencing paragraphs marked in alphabetical order."

The documents that the FBI released pertain to its investigation of Clinton's use of the server while she was secretary of state. She is the Democratic nominee for president.

charges against Clinton for her use of the private server, but Director James Comey said that Clinton was "extremely careless" in handling classified information.

Nobel Prize-Winning U.N. World Food Programme Has Record of Rape, Poisoning Scandals

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) its annual Peace Prize for 2020 on Friday, overlooking a history of corruption, mismanagement, and sexual assault among its ranks.

In its statement announcing the decision, the Committee expressed mounting concern about lack of access to food globally, particularly in light of repressive government lockdowns to prevent the spread of the Chinese coronavirus. The WFP, it said, won the award “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

According to the Nobel Committee, the WFP was responsible for aiding “100 million people in 88 countries” throughout 2019. It asserted that the Chinese coronavirus pandemic “has contributed to a strong upsurge in the number of victims of hunger in the world” and applauded the WFP’s “impressive ability to intensify its efforts” given the current situation.

“The world is in danger of experiencing a hunger crisis of inconceivable proportions if the World Food Programme and other food assistance organisations do not receive the financial support they have requested,” the committee insisted.

David Beasley, the executive director of the U.N. agency, described the award as a “humbling, moving recognition of the world of the WFP staff who lay their lives on the line every day to bring food and assistance for close to 100 million hungry children, women and men across the world.”

“Every one of the 690 million hungry people in the world today has the right to live peacefully and without hunger. Today, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has turned the global spotlight on them and on the devastating consequences of conflict,” Beasley said.

The international recognition for the world’s biggest aid organization bookends a decade otherwise marred by a variety of scandals, from concerns about corruption and theft of aid to struggles internally to contain sexual assault and rape, and at least one incident where WFP food aid poisoned and killed people.

Internally, an independent review of workplace culture in the WFP revealed a year ago that over two dozen people at the agency had experienced rape or sexual assault while on the job. The number of reported incidents of sexual assault more generally was significantly higher.

The study, conducted by consultants from the firm Willis Towers Watson (WTW), also found “startling results concerning the experience of abusive behavior” more generally at the WFP. Consultants organized an anonymous survey of staffers at the company. Of those asked, 28 said they experienced “rape, attempted rape, or other sexual assault,” about double the number who reported similarly throughout the entire U.N. Respondents reported higher rates of “abuse of authority” – 35 percent said they had seen it at the organization – where the term was defined as including “overbearing supervision” and “interference with career opportunities.” Another 29 percent said they experienced non-sexual harassment, including “shouting and aggression” and “spreading rumors.”

The report concluded that the WFP needed a “systemic overhaul” of how it treats its employees.

Shockingly, the rate of sexual assault revealed at the WFP by the survey was significantly lower than that of the United Nations generally. According to the U.N. Safe Space Survey published in January 2019, 38.7 percent of U.N. workers have experienced sexual harassment there. These statistics also only involve cases where the victims are U.N. employees. The United Nations is facing pervasive accusations of rape (including of children), sexual assault, “sex for food/aid,” and other crimes through many of its agencies, most notoriously its “peacekeeper” program.

“If we have a claim of rape by anyone in the WFP, if we can substantiate, I can’t begin to tell you how aggressive [we will be],” David Beasley, the executive director, told the Associated Press last year.

Regarding the humanitarian efforts the WFP actually conducts, it has faced over a decade of concerns regarding widespread corruption, resulting in food falling into the hands of warlords, terrorists, and other criminal actors, who then sell it to fund their illicit operations. A 2009 report revealed that both Somali officials and warlords were selling to the intended recipients U.N. food specifically labeled “not for sale.”

An Australian writer and democracy activist detained in Beijing for almost two years has been formally charged with espionage by Chinese prosecutors, paving the way for him to face trial.

Yang Hengjun, 55, was arrested in January 2019.

He is a former employee of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs who later gained Australian citizenship and became a prominent writer and outspoken political commentator.

In March 2020, officers from the Chinese Government's state security bureau began the process of charging Dr Yang over an ill-defined espionage allegation, but did not provide any information about what they accused him of doing.

On Friday his lawyer, Shang Baojun, told the ABC Dr Yang had been "officially charged on October 7" with "espionage".

When the ABC sought further details from Mr Shang he said he was "strictly prohibited from being interviewed by the foreign media".

Mr Shang has spoken with foreign media organisations in the past and did not specify who has now prohibited him from giving interviews.

Dr Yang's wife, Yuan Xiaoliang, told the ABC she felt "helpless" after hearing her husband had been charged.

"No-one could help him now, the Australian Government can't help him either, we have to follow China's law," Ms Yuan said.

"He was officially indicted to the court and in accordance with the advice on indictment, the authority listed five crimes, however, due to confidentiality agreement, the lawyer can't reveal any details."

Ms Yuan said her husband had three points that he expressed to her, the Australian Embassy in Beijing, and lawyers.

"First, he denies everything," she said.

"Second, he believes it is a political persecution, and third, he said that during the six-month-long residence under surveillance, he suffered from mental maltreatment."

Ms Yuan said she asked her husband's lawyer when the trial would be but he did not know.

Dr Yang was only granted access to a lawyer a month ago for the first time since his arrest.

In a message conveyed to his family and supporters at the time, Dr Yang declared "I am innocent and will fight to the end", promising to "do my best", and to "never confess to something I haven't done".

"They can abuse me, I have had no access to legal representation — this is political persecution", the jailed writer said in comments relayed to the ABC from his prison cell.

Also last month, Australian officials made a consular visit to Dr Yang at a detention facility, which was conducted by video link due to COVID-19 access restrictions.

NEW YORK — “There are no experts with a bookcase behind them,” Simcha Jacobovici boasts to me from his home in Israel via Zoom. That, in part, is what separates his project from others on this topic.

We’re talking about his six-episode series “Enslaved,” an eye-opening look at the transatlantic slave trade available in the United States on Epix, a service you may have already have with a cable package. (If not, it’s a few bucks via Amazon.) It will also air on the BBC on October 11 and the CBC on October 17. It will then be available all over the world, which is important, because “Enslaved” touches everyone.

“Enslaved” investigates the slave trade from multiple angles — cultural, economic, scientific — and it is treated with the gravity and seriousness it deserves. The series is, however, engaging, energetic and, while I don’t want to say “enjoyable,” I will say watchable. Despite being a demoralizing history lesson of man’s inhumanity to man (you may require an aspirin after), the award-winning filmmaker Jacobovici has taken a novel approach.

Each episode uses as its anchor (!) a different sunken slave ship, each representative of the aspect of the history being explored. A group of marine archaeologists, Diving With A Purpose, makes the frequently dangerous trip to retrieve artifacts, while Jacobovici and his cohorts speak with experts in the field. Also making the journey: none other than Hollywood film star Samuel L. Jackson.

A lot of ground is covered, and the action moves from West Africa to Brazil to the Iberian Peninsula to Bristol, UK. Here, a rather prescient conversation is had about the still ubiquitous presence of slave trader Edward Colston.

Through it all, Jacobovici’s probing cameras continue to dive through this murky history, to which we are all tied whether we want to believe it or not.

The co-chair of the commission Frank Fahrenkopf, said Trump’s campaign presented “no evidence whatsoever” that he has tested negative for the coronavirus, after being released from Walter Reed Military Medical Center after a three day stint at the facility. He was released by doctors and has remained symptom free of COVID-19.

Trump has declined to do the virtual debate.

In an interview with Brian Kilmeade on Fox News, Fahrenkopf said he wanted to have a debate next week saying a virtual debate is the “safest way to go.”

“We’re talking about something that will happen in less than a week, if it had originally gone forward. Less than a week,” he told Kilmeade. “At this point in time, there is no evidence whatsoever whether or not when the president tested negative.”

A slew of left-wing activist groups, former and current Democratic politicians, as well as anti-Trump celebrities, athletes, and corporations have teamed up and recruited over 600,000 “healthy, low-risk and diverse poll workers.”

The workers will staff in-person voting locations during early voting and on Election Day, assisting voters check in, understand their ballots, cast their vote, and even open and count mailed ballots, in order “to ensure a safe, fair election.”

Under the title Power the Polls, the initiative has the support of countless left-wing influentials helping promote the effort and is partnered with numerous far-left groups such as the Democracy Initiative, a coalition of 75 activist organizations including Soros-funded groups Demos, MoveOn, the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), Common Cause, and more, which seeks a range of progressive goals that demand “reforming” democracy.

Despite the overwhelming attention given to mail-in voting, four in ten votes — 60 million ballots — are likely to be cast in person this fall, either early or on Election Day, which will likely result in a shortage of poll workers, as they tend to fall into an age bracket more vulnerable to serious illness from COVID-19.

As a result, Power the Polls aims to “be a part of the solution” by recruiting a new wave of poll workers from younger, more diverse populations that have not historically filled these roles.

In addition to ensuring that election technology functions properly and efficiently and assisting voters in both the voting and check-in process, Power the Polls workers will also help open and count mailed ballots.

According to Power the Polls, the states with the greatest need for additional poll workers are: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

In several swing states, Power the Polls is working with the ACLU, partially funded by leftist billionaire George Soros, to ensure elections officials don’t close polling places unnecessarily or become wary of the new, inexperienced third-party help.

Most election officials “are not used to recruiting outside of the usual suspects,” said Power the Polls co-founder and director Scott Duncombe.

Duncombe, who previously worked as a field organizer in New Hampshire for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, also co-founded Pizza to the Polls, an organization that gained popularity after fundraising and providing pizza to polling places with long lines during the 2016 election. In early 2017, Duncombe’s group was quick to offer free pizzas to protesters demonstrating at JFK airport against President Trump’s 2017 temporary ban on refugees and nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries intended to improve the protocols for screening and vetting foreigners.

Hunter’s companies “invested in things that purposefully hurt America’s interests around the world,” M.A. Taylor, director of the new documentary RIDING THE DRAGON: The Bidens’ Chinese Secrets, told PJ Media. “He chose to invest in things that will kill American troops, that will transfer sensitive technology to the Chinese military.

“Americans are going to suffer directly because of the actions of Hunter Biden and by extension Joe Biden, and they already have,” Taylor added.

Riding the Dragon highlights five specific ways Hunter Biden’s business deals empowered China at America’s expense.

The story traces back to 2013, when Joe Biden arrived in Beijing, bringing his son with him. After the trip, China finalized a $1 billion business deal with Hunter’s new company, Bohai Harvest. The Chinese government provided the money.

The firm enjoyed “an unusual and special status in China, operating through the free Shanghai zone,” Peter Schweizer, president at the Government Accountability Institute and author of Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends, explains in the documentary.

“The son of the vice president of the United States… got a deal in the People’s Republic of China that no one else had, and he got that deal after Joe Biden was appointed the point person on China.”

Wittingly or not, Hunter Biden’s firms advanced China’s interests at America’s expense.

1. Military technology

“In 2015, Hunter Biden’s Bohai Harvest joined forces with Chinese military contractor AVIC to buy American parts manufacturer Henniges,” Schweizer explains in the documentary. Henniges produces dual-use technology, which can be used for commercial and military purposes. The deal required Obama administration approval, and the Obama administration did approve it.

AVIC, a company notorious for stealing U.S. military technology, bought 51 percent of Henniges while Bohai Harvest bought the other 49 percent.

It’s been a whirlwind week in the cryptocurrency world. There have been a rash of news items all pointing towards the same thing — attempts to rein in alternatives to the future of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) that are quickly creeping up over the horizon.

It started with the CFTC’s indictment of the owners of crypto-exchange BitMex after more than a year of investigation last week.

Even if its founders are not convicted, this might still spell the end of the embattled BitMEX. In tandem with the criminal indictments, the CFTC also launched a civil action against the BitMEX network of companies and its founders.

The formal counts on which the CFTC seeks relief are:

1. Executing futures transactions without registering with the CFTC

2. Offering illegal off-exchange commodity options

3. Failure to register as a futures commission merchant

4. Failure to register as a designated contract market/swap execution facility

5. Failure to supervise in relation to its lack of KYC and AML procedures and failing to ensure that its partners and employees lawfully handled BitMEX accounts

6. Failure to implement KYC and AML procedures as required under the CEA

That put a lid on a nascent rally in Bitcoin which was beginning to challenge $11,000. The net result was a $500 move down and killing any potential short-term bullish momentum. It should have seen a breakdown below support at $9800 (orange line, see chart) but that didn’t happen.

Since then Bitcoin has been bouncing around between $10,400 and $10,900 without any real direction, continuing to coil and consolidate.

NYT Calls For UN ‘Election Intervention’, Says Biden Must Follow Belarus Protesters and ‘Appeal to the World For Help’

The New York Times called for “international intervention” in the forthcoming presidential election, insisting the Democratic Party invite the United Nations and a host of George Soros-linked groups to interfere with the election outcome. The opinion editorial, entitled “America May Need International Intervention” was penned by Peter Beinart, also is a contributor at The Atlantic and Political Commentator for CNN. In over 1,000 words, Beinart makes the case for foreign election interference under the auspices of the notoriously globalist, anti-Trump United Nations, specifically the body’s Human Rights Council. The United Nations Human Rights Council, however, hosts egregious human rights abusers such as China, Somalia, Sudan, Venezuela, and Qatar. Despite this, Beinart tees up his piece insisting “even Democrats may find it hard to imagine, but the “leader of the free world” would benefit from United Nations oversight.” Beinart insists that Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden “should follow Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya’s example and appeal to the world for help.” He described Tikhanovskaya’s actions as “imploring the United Nations to act.”

In a contested election in Belarus, Tikhanovskaya represents the globalist pick who lost to the duly-elected populist Alexander Lukashenko, a candidate that establishment forces have been attempting to undermine. Beinart continues, attempting to normalize America “requesting foreign intervention” in elections: “For many Americans — raised to see the United States as the natural leader of the “free world” — it may be hard to imagine requesting foreign intervention against tyranny in our own land. But as historians like Gerald Horne and Carol Anderson have detailed, there’s a long history of Black Americans doing exactly that.” He implores Democrats to bolster the actions of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), an international election advisory board which concluded American elections “contravene O.S.C.E. commitments and international standards with regard to universal and equal suffrage” in 2018. In addition to partnering with paragons of globalism – the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, and the World Bank – OSCE also has links to progressive megadonor George Soros. Soros was a keynote speaker at the opening session of an OSCE special meeting in 2003 and individuals from his foundation, the Open Society Institute, have advised the body.

For example, George Sharvashidze, a former Director at the Open Society Institute spoke at an OSCE Economic Forum to promote collaboration with the institute’s academic fellowship program. And in 2012, the Open Society Institute advised the group on its “Human Dimension Implementation Meeting,” providing a comprehensive, nine-page brief on the issue. Beinart continues, insisting “Democrats should use the OSCE’s report as evidence in an appeal to the same body where Tikhanovskaya made hers: the U.N. Human Rights Council.” In other words, Beinart wants to cede America’s control over its own elections and give it to a body in which the Chinese Communist Party – identified as seeking a Biden victory – wields unparalleled power. Who’s to say the Chinese Communist Party wouldn’t manipulate the council the same way it did the World Health Organization, forcing a delay of life-saving information and continuing to withhold information about COVID-19. Beinart also pushes Democrats to “lodge a complaint with the Organization of American States, a regional organization that has pledged “to respond rapidly and collectively in defense of democracy.”

China similarly sits on the group’s observer board, and the group itself was formed in Colombia. The Organization of American States also retains links to George Soros, as he lectured the group in 2006. The calls for foreign election interference emanating from the New York Times represent a complete reversal of the paper’s years-long crusade to tie President Trump to foreign collusion with Russia.

Hurricane Delta made landfall in southwestern Louisiana as a Category 2 storm Friday, compounding misery along a path of destruction left by Hurricane Laura only six weeks earlier.
