The “Black Flag” movement, one of the groups leading the protests, said that over one thousand demonstrations were held across Israel in adherence with the restrictions prohibiting Israelis from protesting over a kilometer away from their homes. A protester painted the Hebrew word “Go” — an increasingly popular slogan among anti-Netanyahu protesters — in large letters across Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square.

During a protest at the Bar Ilan Bridge in central Israel, a demonstrator was lightly injured after being attacked with pepper spray, according to Hebrew media reports. He was taken to nearby Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan for treatment.

Police opened an investigation into the incident.

Late Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s Office said cabinet ministers approved by a telephone vote the extension of the lockdown measures, including the limits on protests. They will remain in place at least until Tuesday.

Israel imposed a nationwide lockdown ahead of the High Holidays last month to rein in a surging coronavirus outbreak. The Knesset passed a law last week allowing the government to declare a special week-long state of emergency to limit participation in assemblies because of the pandemic. The government then declared the state of emergency, limiting all public gatherings to within a kilometer (half a mile) of a person’s home.

Netanyahu has said the restrictions are driven by safety concerns as the country battles a runaway pandemic, but critics and protesters accuse him of tightening the lockdown to muzzle dissent.

Thousands of Israelis have participated in weekly demonstrations outside Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem for months this summer, calling on the longtime prime minister to resign while on trial for corruption.

FBI uncovers armed militia plot to abduct Michigan Gov. Whitmer

The FBI said Thursday it uncovered a plot carried out by an armed militia in Michigan to kidnap Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

In total, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed 19 state felony charges against seven individuals known to be members of the militia group, Wolverine Watchmen or associates of Wolverine Watchmen. Separately, six individuals were also charged by U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge with federal felony charges as a result of the execution of search warrants Wednesday.

The suspects, now under arrest, are alleged to have called on the groups’ members to identify the home addresses of law enforcement officers in order to target them; made threats of violence to instigate a civil war leading to societal collapse; and engaged in the planning and training for an operation to attack the state Capitol building and kidnap government officials, including Gov. Whitmer.

“There has been a disturbing increase in anti-government rhetoric and the re-emergence of groups that embrace extremist ideologies,” Nessel said. “These groups often seek to recruit new members by seizing on a moment of civil unrest and using it to advance their agenda of self-reliance and armed resistance. This is more than just political disagreement or passionate advocacy, some of these groups’ mission is simply to create chaos and inflict harm upon others.”

Through the efforts of more than 200 state and federal law enforcement officials, officers executed a series of search warrants and arrest warrants in more than a dozen cities around the state, including, Belleville, Cadillac, Canton, Charlotte, Clarkston, Grand Rapids, Luther, Munith, Orion Township, Ovid, Portage, Shelby Township and Waterford, according to a press release.

Paul Bellar, Shawn Fix, Eric Molitor, Michael Null, William Null, Pete Musico and Joseph Morrison are all facing state-related terrorism charges related to the militia plot. The six individuals facing federal charges for allegedly conspiring to kidnap the governor are Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta.

State to High Court: Coronavirus mass protest ban justified

Amir Peretz says protests restrictions to be lifted next week

The state told the High Court of Justice late Wednesday night that the Knesset law banning mass protests for a period of weeks during the current novel coronavirus national lockdown is justified.

The Movement for the Quality of Government in Israel – one of the petitioners hoping to convince the High Court to end the mass protest ban – rejected the state’s position when it responded in the middle of the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

On Thursday, a court spokeswoman stated that the court would hear the case on Tuesday. The hearing would be days after Sukkot and close to when the ban may be removed, perhaps rendering the petition of little use.

By slow-walking their petition to strike down new coronavirus limits on demonstrations, the High Court had made it clear that it would not rush in to help the protest movement against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, already on September 30.

Effectively, the High Court will have put zero pressure on the government during a full two weeks when mass protests were banned, by dragging out the petition from September 30 until at least October 13 and possibly longer until a decision is made.

Economy Minister Amir Peretz said he believes the restrictions on protests will be lifted next week.

“We will cancel the restrictions on holding protests very soon,” Peretz told Army Radio on Thursday. “I believe that starting next Tuesday or Wednesday, all protest restrictions will be lifted and the economy will start reopening. There shouldn’t be a connection between opening up the economy and protests restrictions, but a connection has already been made.”

The background for the court petitions to the High Court stems from the authority to block mass protests for between one to three weeks that was granted to the government in late September by the Knesset when an amendment to the coronavirus emergency powers law was passed. It also includes an option to extend the ban for an additional two weeks with another Knesset approval to extend it.

Mass protests near the Prime Minister’s Residence – as had occurred every weekend in recent months – were prevented by the amendment. Protests are still allowed for up to 20 people within 1 km. of a person’s residence.

The key to the protests being effective was their unbroken consistency according to the petitioners. They had hoped the High Court would intervene already on October 2, and accused Netanyahu of using the COVID-19 crisis as an excuse to crack down on dissent.

NY Times Podcast Star Lied About Joining ISIS

The top U.S. newspaper has been exposed for overseeing another large-scale fake news operation.

The main source for The New York Times’ award-winning podcast, “Caliphate,” has been arrested and charged with lying about joining ISIS. The major media outlet had relied on this man’s fabricated story as the core of its reporting, and said two U.S. government officials had independently confirmed his identity.

On Sept. 30 the Times said it was beginning a review of the podcast. But the fake news spread by the American “newspaper of record” has touched off a political scandal in Canada.

Hosted by Times’ reporter Rukmini Callimachi, the Caliphate podcast claims to tell the story of the rise and fall of the so-called Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. The show has attracted millions of listeners, and is one of the most popular podcasts on the globe. The New York Times’ PR team actively boasts of its work on the “chart-topping show” in marketing materials.

The podcast has aggressively pushed the propaganda line of Syria’s Western government-backed opposition. While the paper was publicly praised for its “nuance” in “humanizing” Salafi-jihadist foreign fighters who joined ISIS, massacred civilians, ethnically cleansed religious minorities, and turned women into sex slaves, Caliphate simultaneously portrayed the Syrian government that defeated ISIS as the epitome of evil.

The host of the podcast, Callimachi, euphemistically described genocidal ISIS extremists as “rebels fighting Assad’s soldiers, standing up for the Muslim people,” while blaming the rise of the Islamic State on the “crimes of President Bashar al-Assad” and depicting the “Assad regime” as a collection of sadists who kill civilians for fun.

The star of Caliphate was a young man using the pseudonym Abu Huzayfah al-Kanadi (“the Canadian” in Arabic). Abu Huzayfah concocted an elaborate tale, claiming to the Times that he traveled to Syria in 2014 to join ISIS, where he claimed to have killed people in public executions. Then Huzayfah said he went to Turkey and Pakistan before returning to Canada.

Abu Huzayfah created prominent social media platforms where he spread pro-ISIS propaganda and sought to recruit new Salafi-jihadist extremists.

There was just one problem: the wildly popular podcast was based on a hoax.

Yet he does not acknowledge that bad actors like agitators will use the same services as honest citizens. Maybe Backovic should do the same and investigate other web hosting and CDS. Here's Why Apple Watch Series 6 Blood Oxygen Tracking Didn’t Need FDA Approval

Apple previously had to work hard at getting the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval so that it can equip the Apple Watch with ECG features. The FDA approval meant that the feature, first introduced in the Apple Watch Series 4, can be used for medical purposes so that it can help users get a better picture of their health. The approval also means the feature can help medical professionals take better care of their patients.

Apple, however, didn't have to go through the same process of acquiring the FDA approval before being able to equip the new Apple Watch Series 6 with the much-hyped Blood Oxygen monitoring feature.

Why didn't the company need the FDA's approval?

It's simply because the Blood Oxygen monitoring feature found in the Apple Watch isn't designed for medical uses. Apple said it's simply meant to be used for “wellness purposes.”

Wait – What?

Before Apple was able to equip the Apple Watch Series 4 models with the helpful electrocardiogram (ECG) feature, it had to acquire approval from the FDA in order to use it. This included submitting documentation proving that the ECG feature on the Apple Watch works just as well as other ECG devices in the market.

It, however, didn't have to go through the same process with the SpO2 monitor. The Verge reported that by saying the feature is meant for “general wellness” uses and Apple didn't need to get the FDA's approval anymore. This workaround, the report stated, allows the Cupertino tech giant to sell the device with the feature, as long as it doesn't market it as being used for “medical” uses.

Matt Grennan, assistant professor of health care management in the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, told The Verge that the FDA doesn't regulate certain products, adding that it'd be difficult for the FDA to regulate all digital health products released in the market.

“If you’re just providing information, they’re not regulating that,” Grennan said.

Dangers

Apple's decision to skip FDA approval and call the Apple Watch's SpO2 monitoring feature as something that's “not intended for medical use,” however, could prove dangerous – especially to those who can't tell the difference between a feature used for wellness and another that's used for medical purposes.

Pelosi Signals No Relief for Airlines, Stimulus Payments Without Larger Deal

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rejected President Donald Trump’s calls to pass standalone stimulus measures, including funding for airlines and direct stimulus payments to Americans.

“I have been very open to having a single standalone bill for the airlines or part of a bigger bill,” she told reporters at a news conference.

But, Pelosi stipulated, “There is no standalone bill without a bigger bill,” adding that the relief measure should help states, children, schools, and more.

A standalone bill to provide relief to airlines will not move “if we don’t have a guarantee that we’re going to be helping our state and local employees, that we’re not going to be able to crush the virus, that we’re not going to be able to have our children go to school safely, that we’re not going to have safety in the workplace, that we’re not going to address unemployment,” she continued.

It came after some Democratic lawmakers urged urgent action to provide funding to airlines with tens of thousands of American Airlines and United Airlines jobs being furloughed. The companies have been particularly hard-hit during the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus pandemic, as people have opted not to travel to prevent the risk of contracting the illness.

Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) earlier this week tried to pass an airline funding provision by unanimous agreement but was ultimately blocked.

But on Thursday, Pelosi told reporters that those negotiations were on hold until President Trump was willing to come back to the table on a several-trillion dollar pandemic relief package.

“Let’s take a serious—not a skinny, not an emaciated but a serious appropriate approach—to crushing the virus,” Pelosi told reporters.

Who Could Have Predicted This?

Just two days ago, I wrote an article titled "Remember How The FBI Conveniently Arrested A 'Trump Superfan' For 'Sending Mail Bombs' Right Before The Midterms?" where I went over how suspicious that case was and asked, "What are the odds we'll see a similar event right before the November election?"

Today, the FBI announced they allegedly busted a plot by a "Michigan militia" (loaded with undercover agents and government informants) to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer because of her aggressive lockdown measures.

According to reports, it appears the FBI has been sitting on the case for months just waiting for the perfect time to drop it for maximum political impact.

Michigan militia members are accused of plotting to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and potentially kill other state officials in an effort to overturn the government, according to a criminal affidavit filed in federal court by the FBI.

“In early 2020, the FBI became aware through social media that a group of individuals were discussing the violent overthrow of certain government and law-enforcement components,” says the Oct. 6 filing in the U.S. District Court Western District of Michigan.

According to the court record, 15 militia members from “several states,” including two from Michigan, met in Dublin, Ohio on June 6 to discuss taking “violent action against multiple state governments that they believe are violating the U.S. Constitution.

" … Several members talked about murdering ‘tyrants’ or ‘taking’ a sitting governor. The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message."

Five Michigan men and another man from Delaware were were eventually charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Following the Ohio meeting, one of the Michigan suspects contacted leaders of a Michigan-based militia for assistance with the plan, the court filing said.

The FBI already had an undercover informant from within the militia that was developed after law enforcement learned of the group’s earlier plans to “target and kill police officers.”

Military Experts Say Cal Cunningham’s Adultery Poses a Blackmail Risk, Could ‘Jeopardize a Unit’

Military legal experts say Democrat North Carolina Senate candidate Army Reserve Lt. Col. Cal Cunningham’s recently-disclosed extramarital affair with a veteran’s wife poses a huge security risk because of the potential for blackmail.

Experts say that foreign intelligence services spend a lot of their time looking for compromising material on U.S. service members in hopes of being able to blackmail them for information, and Cunningham’s previously-secret extramarital affair would have put him at high risk.

Attorney and Army veteran Tod Leaven told the Citizen-Times in an interview this week that the Uniform Code of Military Justice’s (UCMJ) ban on adultery is meant to guard against service members being potentially blackmailed.

“Affairs are so sensitive, and people do really, really stupid stuff to try to hide an affair and that could just jeopardize a unit,” he told the paper.

A retired Special Operations Command colonel who wished to speak on background said that it was not the affair itself that put him at risk but the act of hiding it.

“The problem is hiding it makes you a security risk, because you’re subject to blackmail. Hostile intelligence services dream of finding a guy like this,” the retired colonel said.

“They dream of finding a guy who’s hiding an illicit affair like that, because he can be kicked out of the Army and lose everything, or he can cooperate with them and they’ll give him money…so it makes him a massive security risk,” the retired colonel added.

Last week, NationalFile.com published text messages Cunningham, a 47-year-old married father of two, sent to a married public relations executive named Arlene Guzman Todd, 36. The text messages were sexual in nature, and since their disclosure, she has confirmed to the Associated Press that they engaged in an extramarital affair at Cunningham’s family home.

Cunningham is running for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat against incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC). Cunningham has made his military service and devotion to his family key components of his campaign.

For now, Cunningham is insisting on staying in the race to become a U.S. senator despite reports of more damaging information to come.

The U.S. Army Reserve confirmed Wednesday it is investigating Cunningham, and it is not clear what else may be found or what else he may have kept hidden.

Cunningham is no ordinary military reservist — he is a senior military lawyer who serves in the Army Reserve’s 134th Legal Operations Detachment at Fort Bragg, which is home to the Army’s elite special operations units.

Juan Guaidó Creates a Parallel Consulate in Brazil

A “parallel” Venezuelan Consulate in Brazil was condemned in a recent statement by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza. In late September, supporters of the Venezuelan opposition leader, the self-proclaimed “interim president” Juan Guaidó, announced that they would form a new consulate in Brazil. Basically, the objective is to create a parallel Venezuelan diplomatic representation, which meets the interests of the opposition – which is supported by the Brazilian government. The decision has received strong criticism from the Venezuelan government, which considers it illegal. However, despite the criticism, the consulate is starting its operations this week in the Brazilian state of Roraima – a region strategically chosen because it borders Venezuela.

Jorge Arreaza, head of the Bolivarian government’s foreign relations, reinforced his criticism and published an official statement warning the international community against the activities of the opposition, which he classified as fraudulent. According to Arreaza, there is an attempt to usurp the legitimate consular power of the Venezuelan government – which, in legal terms, is correct, considering that Guaidó is not actually the president of Venezuela.

Guaidó’s initiative in Brazil continues a series of clashes between the government of Jair Bolsonaro and representatives of Nicolás Maduro. Last month, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared Venezuelan diplomats as “persona non grata” after setting a deadline in April for them to leave the country – which did not happen due to a later decision by the Supreme Court. Now, with the appointment of new “diplomats” by Juan Guaidó, the situation between both countries is even more tense, since the Brazilian government will publicly recognize the role of the opposition’s parallel diplomatic service, while denying maintaining relations with the Venezuelan official diplomacy.

No specific date has been set for the opening of the parallel consulate, and it has just been announced that from this week on the agency would be fully operational. In fact, Guaidó’s “diplomats” are already acting freely in Brazil and even distributing documents to Venezuelan citizens in Brazilian territory. The Maduro government has already stated that such documents have no validity, but the Brazilian government recognizes the actions and cooperates with the oppositionist Consulate. It is also important to emphasize that the employees of the parallel consulate have no diplomatic training, being political militants chosen by Guaidó to represent his interests in Brazil.

Facebook and Instagram conducted their most comprehensive purge of QAnon accounts to date on Tuesday.

The sites removed thousands of accounts spreading the groundless conspiracy that President Trump is secretly battling a cabal of child-abusing elites.

YouTube, though, still hosts thousands of pro-QAnon posts.

"Videos are central to QAnon as video is the most used medium to circulate QAnon content across digital ecosystems," commented Marc-Andre Argentino, an online extremism expert.

YouTube has introduced policies meant to limit disinformation, but has only been partially successful in enforcing them.

In the past, YouTube's algorithms pushed extremist content to thousands of viewers, but the site said it is changing them,

The QAnon conspiracy movement suffered a serious blow on Tuesday, when Facebook and Instagram removed hundreds of the movement's largest pages, accounts, and groups.

The platforms said they would ban QAnon content, expanding a policy that had previously tolerated QAnon posts as long as they were non-violent.

However, the movement still has a home on one of the biggest online platforms: YouTube.

And the conspiracy movement will keep spreading online unless YouTube takes action to remove the videos and channels it hosts promoting the conspiracy, experts say.

The site has long been a hub for the movement, where believers promote their theories to tens of thousands of viewers on YouTube channels.

A YouTube spokesman told Business Insider that it had "removed tens of thousands of Q-related videos, and terminated hundreds of Q-related channels for violating our hate and harassment policies since 2018."

QAnon videos on the site explore the movement's groundless belief that an elite network of child abusers secretly manipulates world events.

They are widely shared and discussed in private groups on social media, and with thousands of others on platforms like Twitter. The messaging site is another major platform where efforts to limit the conspiracy theory have had only limited success, reported The Washington Post.

The movement, which claims President Donald Trump is secretly working to dismantle the cabal, has been tied to several violent crimes.

The FBI in a memo in 2017 described it as a potential domestic terror threat. Several Republican congressional candidates have openly embraced the conspiracy theory, and in controversial remarks at a press briefing in August Trump said he welcomed its support.

'Data Is the Ammunition': Inside the Pentagon's New Strategy to Dominate Future Battlefields

The Defense Department unveiled Thursday a new "Data Strategy" aimed at treating the vast amounts of information collected across the force as a weapons system for decision-makers from the Pentagon's E-ring to the front lines.

"Data is the ammunition of the future," a defense official said about the strategy to organize data pipelines and speedily harness information for warfighters.

"The principal challenge in the Data Strategy isn't getting the data – the Department has access to vast data reserves," Dana Deasy, the DoD's chief information officer, said in a statement.

The goal is to "build the engine to turn this resource into insight for our service members at the speed of need."

Under Chief Data Officer David Spirk, the DoD's Data Council will be expanded to bring in the combatant commands and field operations to manage the data and make it user-friendly.

Spirk, a former Marine and chief data officer for U.S. Special Operations Command, will have the task of overseeing the council's effort at "making data visible, accessible, understandable, linked, trustworthy, interoperable and secure."

"Data is the ammunition [and] is increasingly central to warfighter advantage on and off the battlefield," Deasy said. "This strategy is our first step to making that ammo persistently available to the men and women of the DoD, regardless of echelon or geographic location."

On background, the defense official said demand for data is constantly increasing but "it's not easy delivering the capability" in an organization saddled with "thousands of legacy systems."

In addition, mindsets will have to be changed to give data "the same attention we give to weapons systems," the official said.

"It's time to turn this into action [by getting data specialists] into the field sitting next to operators" making tactical decisions, the official said. "Our warfighters are counting on us."

The official stressed that the data must be usable, easy to retrieve and understandable at the lowest level, and not just be seen as a tool for the higher echelons.

If the enterprise takes that exclusive approach, "then we're missing the point," the official said. "We definitely are thinking about that lance corporal out there – how to make this real."

The official had no initial cost estimate for the new strategy but said, "If we do this right, a lot of the resources exist right now."

The project is expected to take about a decade, according to the official.

"I would hope it doesn't take us 10 years," the official said. "I think we can accelerate this timeline."

Seventh Circuit Court Blocks Wisconsin Delayed Absentee Ballot Deadline

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday blocked the Democrat’s attempt to delay counting ballots received up until the 9th of November — a week after the election.

This is a HUGE blow to the Democrat Party’s attempts to sow doubt and confusion in the November presidential election.

The AP reported:

A federal appeals court on Thursday blocked a decision to extend the deadline for counting absentee ballots in battleground Wisconsin, in a win for Republicans who have fought attempts to expand voting across the country.

If the ruling stands, absentee ballots will have to be delivered to Wisconsin election clerks by 8 p.m. on Election Day if they are to be counted. Results of the presidential race in the pivotal swing state would be known within hours of polls closing.

Democrats almost certainly will appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Under state law, absentee ballots are due in local clerks’ offices by 8 p.m. on election night, but Democrats and allied groups sued to extend the deadline after the April presidential primary saw long lines, fewer polling places, a shortage of poll workers and thousands of ballots mailed days after the election.

U.S. District Judge William Conley ruled last month that any ballots that arrive in clerk’s offices by Nov. 9 will be counted, as long as they are postmarked by Election Day on Nov. 3.

We know that an enormous amount of time, energy, and money are being funneled into a massive array of leftist groups with the sole purpose being to take down President Trump and/or to ensure he loses in November.

One of the more troubling such efforts being reported involves software allegedly funded by the U.S. taxpayer to track and defeat ISIS. This software is being used by a Democrat group to ensure Trump’s coronavirus messaging gets disappeared and/or refuted by )paid “influencers” online.

It should be noted that the group’s claims of using taxpayer-funded software have been disputed by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Whether or not the group is padding its resume in terms of the origins of the software and who paid for it, the details of this Democrat group’s anti-Trump online activities are alarming.

These activities reportedly include former General Stanley McChrystal acting as an advisoron how best to deploy the anti-terrorist software against Trump supporters online, boosting leftist narratives that run counter to Trump’s, and paying armies of online trolls to counter anything related to the Wuhan coronavirus that is pro-Trump.

QAnon Conspiracies Are Taking Over Canadian Conservatism

The group exploded onto the news cycle in July when a man smashed his pickup truck through the gates in front of Rideau Hall.

It may be tempting to laugh at Michael Caputo, the top communications official at the United States’ Health and Services Department, who recently accused Center for Disease Control scientists of “sedition” and predicted a socialist uprising would follow the November election.

“Remember the Trump supporter who was shot and killed [in Portland late last month]? That was a drill,” Caputo declared in a bizarre, hyper-paranoid broadcast on Facebook Live on September 13. He added: “If you carry guns, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it’s going to be hard to get.”

Canadians often watch with fascination as American conspiracy theorists embarrass themselves. It’s certainly tempting to boastfully tell ourselves that intrigue inventories such as QAnon, which Caputo indirectly referenced in his rant, won’t gain a foothold here.

The thing is, it already has. And the mysterious Q — an alleged U.S. government insider who surfaced on the murky 4chan platform in 2017 with claims that Satanic forces were attempting to overthrow President Donald Trump and his administration — has drawn a following in Canada.

QAnon exploded onto the news cycle in July when Manitoba resident Corey Hurren smashed his pickup truck through the wrought-iron gates in front of Rideau Hall, the grounds currently hosting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family, who weren’t home at the time.

Carrying an illegal rifle, revolver and a prohibited magazine of ammunition, Hurren was apprehended after a two-hour stand-off with police. In a two-page letter shared with Global News by an unnamed, Hurren raved that Trudeau was turning Canada into a “Communist country.” Foreign Policy magazine called this the “most high-profile action inspired by QAnon.”

That Hurren was a member of the Canadian Rangers — he even won an award from the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery — isn’t exactly surprising. Multiple investigations have revealed numerous adherents to far-right ideologies or groups within the military, including the Three Percenters and Soldiers of Odin, who have marched in an anti-mask rally alongside QAnon followers.

But even more troubling is QAnon’s infiltration of Canada’s political sphere.

In 2018, a year after coming just short in his bid to lead the Conservative Party of Canada, Maxime Bernier shared a “must watch video” to Twitter that featured a prominent QAnon YouTuber. A few days later he tweeted about a “future world government” — a trademark Q tenet — that would “destroy Canada.”

Navy names new class of Guided Missile Frigate ships

Oct. 8 (UPI) – The secretary of the Navy has announced the name of the new class of Guided Missile Frigate ships.

Navy Secretary Kenneth Braithwaite revealed USS Constellation, currently referred to as FFG 62, as the name of the first ship in the new Guided Missile Frigate FFG(X) class of ships on Wednesday.

The announcement was made while aboard the second ship to bear the name, Constellation, which currently stands as a museum in Baltimore Inner Harbor, a statement said.

The name was selected in honor of the first U.S. Navy ships that Congress authorized in 1794 named United States, Constellation, Constitution, Chesapeake, Congress, and President which "established the Continental Navy as an agile, lethal and ready force for the 19th century," according to a statement.

850 NBN staff paid more than $200,000 amid government pay crackdown

More than 850 employees at the national broadband network are paid above $200,000 a year with more than three-quarters of its workforce earning six-figure salaries, new data has revealed, amid growing scrutiny from the federal government on public sector wages.

The $51 billion taxpayer-funded organisation, under fire for paying bonuses to its executive team during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, has confirmed 110 of its workers are paid between $300,000 and $400,000 and 34 received base salaries above $400,000 before bonuses.

It can also be revealed NBN Co spent $265,000 on entertainment and function expenses between February and June at the height of the coronavirus pandemic this year when millions of Australians were unable to travel, socialise in groups or go to restaurants and cafes.

The NBN Co was given an extra $4.5 billion in the federal budget on Tuesday for an upgrade by 2023 to improve the speeds available. Another $29.2 million was provided to accelerate the rollout of ultra-fast 5G mobile networks.

New figures, provided to a Senate committee, show that as of September 9 this year 4859 of its 6300 employees were paid in excess of $100,000 a year, including 733 workers on salaries worth between $200,000 and $300,000.

An NBN Co spokesman said staff were employed under individually negotiated contracts, enterprise agreements and other commercial arrangements.

"In order to remain competitive and attract and retain critical talent to the organisation, NBN Co benchmarks senior executive remuneration against other telecommunications companies, although the remuneration … is more aligned to the more modest ratio of comparable government business enterprises, rather than that of listed entities," he said.

The spokesman said the network and its employees were also accountable for corporate expenses and "aware of our corporate expense policies".

He said this budget includes community engagement functions, which were maintained during the pandemic, as well as hotels and food for staff on business trips.

The spokesman said travel and events expenses were reduced during this period with the amount incurred equating "to an average monthly expense of approximately $8 per month, per employee".

The rollout of the network finished earlier this year and the NBN Co has revealed plans to reduce its staffing levels to 5500 by the end of 2020, leaving 800 people redundant.

Labor's government accountability spokeswoman Kimberley Kitching said NBN Co was the new "millionaires factory".

"NBN Co employs public servants who take no private-sector risk, but are given multimillion-dollar rewards," Senator Kitching said.

There are 877 NBN workers earning about the same or more than the base salary of a backbencher, which was $211,250 on July 1.

The technology provider came under fire earlier this month over the potential payment of millions of dollars in bonuses to senior executives this year. CEO Stephen Rue received a $1.7 million salary package in 2019 and an extra $828,000 in short-term incentives.

Other publicly-funded executives are also under pressure after the Morrison government told the board of directors of Australia Post to veto more than $7 million of bonuses at the same time as the nation faces the worst recession in more than 90 years.

CHICAGO — A suburban Chicago couple was charged in federal court Thursday with child labor trafficking, for allegedly forcing an illegal alien teen from Guatemala to work for them. The case is being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Department of Labor, with significant assistance from the Aurora, Illinois, police department and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Santos Teodoro AC-Salazar, 23, and Olga Choc Laj, 30, both of Aurora, Illinois, are charged with using force, threats of force and threatening abuse of the law and legal process in order to force the minor female to comply.

Court documents allege Choc Laj accompanied the teenage victim to the United States from Guatemala, having given false identification to U.S. border authorities to illegally smuggle her into the country. The charges further allege that once in the U.S., Choc Laj harbored the victim at her Illinois residence and forced the victim to provide labor and services for Choc Laj’s financial gain. AC-Salazar is alleged to have later joined Choc Laj in their residence and participated in the labor trafficking by, among other things, forcing the victim to perform household chores, including taking care of the defendants’ infant child.

The public is reminded that charges are not evidence of guilt. The defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The charges in the complaint are punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison. If convicted, the court must impose a reasonable sentence under federal statutes and the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

UK Seizes $13 Million in Unexplained Wealth From Businessman

In what is being described as a landmark case, the U.K.’s National Crime Agency, NCA, relied on an Unexplained Wealth Order to seize millions in property and assets from a businessman with alleged ties to organized crime.

Despite not having been convicted of a crime himself, Mansoor ‘Manni’ Mahmood Hussain, a 40-year-old residing in Leeds, was required to submit a 76-page statement to the NCA to explain how he amassed his multi-million dollar real estate empire – which inadvertently helped NCA build an even bigger case against him, it said in a press release on Wednesday.

“Hussain, who has links to a murderer jailed for 26 years, an armed robber and a convicted fraudster who acted as his accountant, used threats of violence and blackmail to buy his properties,” the NCA said.

The NCA was able to uncover this evidence through an Unexplained Wealth Order, a mechanism introduced in the U.K. in January of 2018, which forces investigated individuals to explain their assets if they appear disproportionate to their income.

Graeme Biggar, NCA Director General of the National Economic Crime Centre, said that “this case is a milestone, demonstrating the power of Unexplained Wealth Orders, with significant implications for how we pursue illicit finance in the U.K..

“This groundbreaking investigation has recovered millions of pounds worth of criminally obtained property. It is crucial for the economic health of local communities such as Leeds, and for the country as a whole, that we ensure property and other assets are held legitimately.

This asset recovery of roughly 10 million pounds (US$13 Million) was the first one that has been obtained solely based on an individual's alleged involvement in serious organized crime, the NCA said.

Politicians from multiple parties expressed praise for the successful asset seizure, and the potential Unexplained Wealth Orders have for going after illicit finance.

Margaret Hodge, a UK Labour Party Member of Parliament for Banking said on Twitter that it was “fantastic to see the first Unexplained Wealth Order success story.”

She said that they are “a vital tool in the fight against money laundering” and that law enforcement agencies “must continue to use this weapon to crack down on our dirty money crisis.”

James Brokenshire, a former member of parliament for the conservative party also called the news “fantastic,” and said that he “strongly support[s] work to protect the U.K. economy and our communities from criminally financed assets and property.”

Europol: COVID-19 Causes Spike in Cybercrime

As the coronavirus pandemic forced many to work from home, criminals seem to have adapted to the new situation and are also increasingly working remotely and causing an upward trend in cyber crime, according to Europol's Internet Organised Crime Threat Assessment, IOCTA, for 2020.

“During the lockdown, we turned to the internet for a sense of normality: shopping, working and learning online at a scale never seen before,” Europol said in a press release accompanying the report. “Although the COVID-19 crisis showed us how criminals actively take advantage of society at its most vulnerable, this opportunistic behaviour of criminals should not overshadow the overall threat landscape. In many cases, COVID-19 has enhanced existing problems.”

Social engineering and phishing attacks remain two of the most common crimes on the web, according to Europol. With an elderly and often non-tech savvy population unexpectedly thrust into remote work, that type of crime has become all the more lucrative.

“Criminals quickly exploited the pandemic to attack vulnerable people; phishing, online scams and the spread of fake news became an ideal strategy for cyber criminals seeking to sell items they claim will prevent or cure COVID-19,” said Europol.

Ransomware, however, is still one of the most terrifying tools at a cyber criminal’s disposal.

With the increase in remote working, especially amongst essential public service, health and safety workers, keeping virtual networks running smoothly is of the utmost importance. With a ransomware attack, cyber criminals can hijack an online system’s ability to operate and hold it hostage, while demanding a significant ransom.

“The clear majority of law enforcement respondents named ransomware as a top priority threat,” said the IOCTA report. “Considering the scale of damage that ransomware can inflict, victims also appear to be reluctant to come forward to law enforcement authorities or the public when they have been victimised, which makes it more difficult to identify and investigate such cases.”

The importance of the healthcare infrastructure amidst the pandemic makes hospitals and other public services lucrative targets, while the increasingly remote workforce, operating from less secure home computers, has become increasingly vulnerable.

The IOCTA report also found that the rise of cryptocurrencies, with their less traceable nature, has made them the choice currency for cyber criminals to demand ransoms and payments for their illicit activities.

An epidemiologist and a child psychiatrist who say wearing masks is harmful to children are the new expert witnesses in a lawsuit challenging Connecticut’s mask requirements for schools, according to court documents filed Thursday.

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit, including parents of schoolchildren and the Connecticut Freedom Alliance, filed disclosures in Hartford Superior Court naming epidemiologist Knut Wittkowski and child psychiatrist Dr. Mark McDonald as their experts.

A judge ordered the plaintiffs to produce new expert witnesses by Thursday, after ruling their original two witnesses - an ophthalmologist and a forensic psychiatrist - were not qualified to testify in support of their claims that masks harm children and do not prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Wittkowski is the founder and chief executive of the biostatistics firm ASDERA, and a former biostatistician and epidemiologist at Rockefeller University in New York. In April, Rockefeller University issued a statement saying Wittkowski’s opinions discouraging social distancing in order to hasten herd immunity to the coronavirus did not represent the views of the school, its leadership or its faculty.

The Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey, known as INSURV, which conducts acceptance trials for new ships found that DDG-117, the Paul Ignatius, had the lowest overall score of any of the five previous destroyers built at Ingalls since the program restarted. And issues with the America-class amphibious assault ship Tripoli in 2018 set the service’s acceptance of the new ship back a whole year.

Both Ingalls' parent company Huntington Ingalls Industries and the Navy say all issues discovered on ships during acceptance trials are handled prior to delivery, and that Ingalls' ships have performed well recently. But the issues in 2018 and 2019 raise concerns about a shipyard the Navy depends heavily on as it tries to expand its fleet.

According to the annual unclassified INSURV report sent to Congress in April, the America class LHA, Arleigh Burke class DDG, and the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock (LPD) all showed issues in multiple areas in recent years.

On the destroyer Ignatius, inspectors found four of what’s known as “starred deficiencies,” which the Navy’s INSURV instruction defines as a deficiency that significantly degrades the ships ability to perform a primary or secondary mission, or impacts the safety of the ship. Starred deficiencies must be corrected before delivery.

Navy destroyer helped recover $720 million in drugs during 9 month deployment

The USS Pinckney, a guided-missile destroyer, returned to Naval Base San Diego this week after recovering $720 million worth of marijuana and cocaine during its nine-month deployment.

The Navy ship, which left San Diego in January with the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, embarked on a counter-narcotics mission in April while the USS Roosevelt was sidelined in Guam following a massive coronavirus outbreak on the ship.

The Pinckney joined the U.S. Southern Command and Joint Interagency Task Force in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. There, with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment, the ship’s sailors recovered an estimated 9,800 kilograms of suspected cocaine and an estimated 2,800 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated wholesale value of $720 million, Navy officials said this week.

“The sailors of Pinckney have helped make the United States a safer place to live,” said Cmdr. Andrew Roy, the ship’s commanding officer. “I thank all Pinckney sailors and U.S. Coast Guardsmen who overcame many obstacles to make sure illicit narcotics will never make it into our homes, schools, or communities.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden blamed President Donald Trump on Thursday for a foiled kidnapping plot by a group of extremists who intended to abduct Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The FBI arrested six named alleged co-conspirators and seven others on Thursday morning for conspiring to kidnap the governor.

Though it did not name a specific political ideology, the FBI’s criminal complaint alleges that the members of the group “talked about creating a society that followed the U.S. Bill of Rights and where they could be self-sufficient.” Two apparently met at a Second Amendment rally.

One member of the group, Brandon Caserta, was seen in an online video in front of an anarchist flag.

Biden, speaking to reporters in Arizona alongside running mate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), said Trump’s rhetoric was to blame:

Though Vice President Mike Pence debunked the hoax on national television during a debate with Harris on national television Wednesday evening, Biden linked Charlottesville to Trump’s support for Michigan protesters earlier this year who opposed Whitmer’s draconian coronavirus shutdowns. (Last week, the Michigan Supreme Court struck down the 1945 emergency powers law that Whitmer had been using, ruling that it was unconstitutional.)

Trump said there were “very good people on both sides again,” Biden quipped to reporters in Arizona.

He noted that FBI Director Christopher Wray had recently said that white supremacists were the greatest domestic terror threat.

Biden added: “Why can’t the president just say stop?”

There is no evidence yet that the group involved in the kidnapping plot had white supremacist ties.

Trump, as Pence pointed out, has repeatedly condemned white supremacism.

The current state of /qresearch/ and traditional bakers' response to ops now being conducted there

Recently, an anon posted a group of messages from bakers who met on an old baking thread in hopes of finding a place they could talk confidentally. Normally, they would talk on /bakers meta/, but for many days, any conversations there have been spammed umercifully on /qresearch/ along with negative commentary designed to make it appear that the posters were saying and doing things against the interests of /qresearch/. The caps of these conversations was voluminous -and in very small text- such that few readers would actually blow it up to look at the details. Instead, they would likely just read the red-text commentary. Red text is also more likely to be remembered than ordinary text.

This activity has been carried out by a small group headed by a person or group known as OSS. They had been using a variety of psychological techniques to harass, intimidate, and threaten all bakers who refuse to agree to their radical new plan for managing the breads on /qresearch/. We believe based on evidence recently found that this is not just a group, but a team - a team using the Tavistock-style methods developed specifically to break down the will of one's opponents through fear, intimidation, and gaslighting techniques.

Examples:

- creating mutual distrust among target group members (internal dissension)

- pitting one against one another (anons against bakers)

- portraying targets as members of a hostile group (bakers union, mossad, aflb, payseur, paytriots)

- taking innocent remarks out of context (see above)

It looked like BO was right there on the board, ready to act. see CAP. Certainly, the thread was locked much more quickly than usual.

[As many anons are aware, @FastJack has tried to take over qresearch twice in the past, most recently in June 2019. The second time, he did it by first launching a campaign against the kitchen from April to July 2019 to turn anons against the kitchen. Ultimately, he seized complete control on 7-11-19. Then he radically altered the dough, declared that bakers could not longer generate notables, and banished notables to a separate thread. Anons strenuously objected to these actions, but as BO, his position was basically unassailable. Anons turned to the only source they could: Q. Initially, Q strongly suggested that part of the altered dough be restored. Several days later, he said to "Revert the dough" entirely. Much to the joy of QR anons.]

The traditional bakers discovered that OSS group and @FastJack were likely engaged in some kind of joint project involving /qresearch/. This was extremely concerning. What should be done? To figure this out, they needed to meet again. But this time, confidentially.

One baker thought to meet in an old class bread, #33, where there would be relative privacy. But unbeknownst to him, that thread was already being watched. So when the baker who knew about the surveillance found out the group was gathering there, he went to warn them not to discuss anything further. Tried to think of another place to meet, but time was short. The only thing the arriving baker could think to do was to jump to yet another thread quickly - there to post an email address that could be used if absolutely necessary to communicate. So he volunteered a protonmail address and then deleted the post, so there would be no trace - all the while understanding that there might be watchers but hoping they were otherwise occupied.

That baker was me, gyb/freebaker.

Concealed Carry Permit Holders Grows Seven-fold in 20 Years, Still Rising

A new report shows the number of concealed carry permit applications is rising, even despite some states limiting Second Amendment rights during recent pandemic shutdowns. The number of permit holders for concealed firearms is nearly 20 million, according to a Washington Examiner report.

Since 1999, the number of concealed handgun permit holders has grown by at least seven-fold. The trend is continuing. That follows news that background checks for firearm sales topped 15.4 million so far this year, surpassing 2019’s totals and poised to eclipse the 2016 record of 15.7 million background checks in a single year. Forty percent of those buyers, almost 6.2 million, are first time buyers.

Twenty Year Trend

Record-setting gun sales have been the story of 2020. The surge in sales has also revealed a diversifying gun-owning population in America, with women and minorities comprising large percentages of buyers. Firearm retailer survey data show handgun purchases were by far the most common among buyers, and reasons of personal protection drove sales across all categories of firearms.

“I’ve seen a lot more single moms that are scared and need something to protect them,” said Dave Amon of Gunstop of Minnetonka, Minn. “They’re scared when people talk about defunding the police.”

This isn’t surprising given rioting, looting, and violence on the nightly news. Add to this backdrop criminals being released from jails and growing calls to “defund the police” and Americans are remedying their legitimate concerns by taking responsibility for their own safety.

The trend of an increasingly diverse gun buyer is mirrored in those obtaining concealed carry permits. “Permits for women and minorities continue to increase at a much faster rate than for either men or whites,” said John Lott, of the Crime Research Prevention Center, which tracks concealed carry permit applications.

That’s hardly new, though. The CPRC study shows nearly 20 million Americans today possess a concealed carry permit. That amounts to a more than seven-fold increase in permit carriers since 1999 when there were 2.7 million.

Israeli arms and defense companies invited to Abu Dhabi for Middle East’s largest exhibition of its kind

The defense relations between Israel and the Gulf States were for years a secret. Now, less than a month after Israel signed an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations with both the UAE and Bahrain, Israel's defense sector companies have been invited to openly participate in the upcoming International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) set to take place in Abu Dhabi in February 2021. IDEX is a biennial arms and defence technology sales exhibition and the largest of its kind in the Middle East.

Over recent days, IDEX organizers signed an agreement with the organizers of The Israel Defence Exhibition (ISDEF) to coordinate Israeli participation in the conference in Abu Dhabi.

IDEX is a five-day event held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre which prior to the Covid-19 pandemic would attract 100,000 visitors from across the world to view exhibits and displays by over 1,000 companies from 60 countries. The upcoming event is expected to be smaller due to coronavirus, but unlike similar events, hasn't been canceled to date.

Forced Labor is a modern form of slavery and a fundamental violation of human rights. Victims of forced labor, a type of human trafficking, can be found in factories, on farms, at construction sites and more. CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) – A mayoral candidate in Carrollton has been arrested and charged with voter fraud.

Denton County Sheriffs have Zul Mirza Mohamed in custody and have charged him with 109 felonies related to voter fraud.

The investigation began September 23 when Sheriff’s were notified by the Denton County Elections Office of possible fraudulent activity related to absentee ballot applications.

Officials say absentee ballots had been requested to be sent to a PO Box in Lewisville, that was supposed to belong to a nursing home facility. When investigators made contact with the Carrollton residents whose ballots had been requested they learned that none of the residents had asked for ballots be mailed to the PO Box.

Further investigation revealed the PO Box had been obtained with a fictitious Texas driver license and a fictitious University of North Texas student ID.

To find out who was behind the scheme officials began a surveillance of the postal facility.

A box of the requested ballots was picked up at the location on October 7. Investigators followed the person, later identified as Mohamed, back to a home in the 1600 block of Bennington Drive in Carrollton and contacted a judge to get a search warrant for the house.

One inside deputies found the box containing the requested ballots, with several of them open. The fraudulent driver license used to rent the PO Box was also located during the search.

Sheriff Tracy Murphree said, “The fact an actual candidate for public office would engage in these activities is appalling.”

Mohamed, who is currently a candidate for mayor in the city of Carrollton, was arrested and taken to the Denton County Jail. He has been charged with 25 counts of Unlawful Possession of Ballot/Ballot Envelope w/o Request of Voter, and 84 counts of Fraudulent Use of Mail Ballot Application.

For years, we have been warning about dire consequences if central banks continue to meddle in the economy and financial markets. In December 2013, we wrote

There is a serious possibility that the measures taken by the central banks have already created a situation in which their actions increase rather than decrease financial instability. This is due to the fact that, if the actual price of an asset does not meet its market–based value, the true level of risk is not properly revealed.

During the “Coronavirus rescue” by the major central banks from March through June of this year, we essentially ran down the clock. No viable paths remain to escape the vicious feedback loop between central banks and financial markets - at least without serious repercussions.

Over the years, central banks have created conditions where prices in capital markets—and by implication, the resulting capital allocation structure—have become distorted to a previously unimaginable degree.

This has resulted in three extremely troublesome fragilities at the heart of the world economy.

First, it has led to ‘yield hunting’ among investors, who are forced to seek higher yields from riskier financial products.

Secondly, it has led to a permanent central bank intervention in the financial markets, because without it a crash would surely occur.

Thirdly - and this is something that has received much too little attention - the massive capital misallocations due to unnaturally low interest rates have ‘hollowed-out’ vast sectors of the global economy.

We have been focusing on the fragility of the financial markets frequently lately, so this time we will concentrate on the capital misallocation issue instead, though the two are inherently linked.

The driving force of the economy

In March 2019 we devoted the entirety of the Q-Review to explain why global economic growth has sputtered since 2009.

We explored, extensively, the concept of creative destruction, which describes the process by which capitalist economies evolve and grow over time. In essence, creative destruction enables the flow of technical innovations into the economy through the destruction of old and inefficient production methods and enterprises, and the emergence of new, more productive firms.

Moreover, we wrote that

The risk-and-reward relationship, that is, the gains and failures of the private sector drive economic progress. The first accumulates income and capital, while the second uncovers sustainable businesses, setting the stage for the creative destruction.

In essence, this is what a capitalist economy is all about. The accumulation of capital is required to provide the funding for sustainable businesses, which provide employment, personal income and tax revenues.

Price discovery in the modern capital markets is essential to accurately evaluate the risk-and-reward relationship of both real economic investments as well as those of financial assets. Price discovery thus guides the efficient allocation of capital to its most profitable employment, based on the information gathered by millions of investors. This idea is part of the bedrock of capitalist theory.

HOUSTON — Authorities in Houston, Texas, and the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday the results of an operation targeting sex trafficking in Fort Bend County, Texas.

The operation dubbed “Operation Patriot” targeted sex trafficking organizations and sex buyers from Sept. 9 – 16.

Forty-six individuals were arrested as a result of the operation, including six arrests for promotion of prostitution, 40 arrests for prostitution and six arrests for narcotics.

HSI Houston Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) Mary Magness explained why it is critical to target both the trafficking organizations and the sex buyers.

“What we often find is if you only eliminate the supply-side of sex trafficking, another criminal organization will move in to fulfill the demand,” explained ASAC Magness. “So we simultaneously target both the organizations behind the sex trafficking and the people who support it, to more effectively eradicate this vile criminal activity from the community.”

In addition to the 46 criminal arrests, HSI Houston and local law enforcement rescued five victims. HSI employs a victim-centered approach to combat human trafficking, which places equal importance on the identification and stabilization of victims, as the identification and prosecution of traffickers.

“Sex traffickers often rely on physical and sexual abuse, threats of harm, economic and psychological manipulation, and cruelty to force their victims to engage in commercial sex,” said ASAC Magness. “To better confront these realities of human trafficking, we integrate trauma-informed victim support services throughout our criminal investigation.”

Other agencies involved in the operation included: the Department of Family & Protective Services; Department of Public Safety; DeliverFund; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office; Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office; Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office; Fort Bend County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office; Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office; Galveston County District Attorney’s Office; Harris County District Attorney’s Office; Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office; Harris County Sheriff’s Office; Houston Police Department; Missouri City Police Department; Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office; Office of the Texas Attorney General; Stafford Police Department; Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission; Texas Forensic Nurse Examiners; and the YMCA – International.

HSI Houston is a partner in the Human Trafficking Rescue Alliance (HTRA) for the Southern District of Texas. The HTRA is a multidisciplinary human trafficking task force that implements collaborative approaches to combat all forms of human trafficking in the Southern District of Texas.

In FY 2019, HSI Houston, working in conjunction with the HTRA, arrested 205 individuals for human trafficking-related offenses, which accounted for approximately 10% of all human trafficking-related arrests in the U.S.

JP Morgan Pledges $30 Billion To "Fight The Racial Wealth Gap"

JP Morgan, the bank whose employees were recently caught pocketing COVID-19 relief funds destined for small businesses, has reportedly committed billions of dollars to help "advance racial equality" and "fight the racial wealth gap".

According to Axios, the bank announced Thursday that it plans to spend $30 billion over the next five years, which the company says will address some of the biggest drivers of massive wealth inequality between Black and white Americans. The commitment - which is just talk so far, as far as we can tell - makes JPM "by far the largest monetary contributor to efforts by businesses to fight systemic inequality and racism in the US."

JPM CEO Jamie Dimon, who most recently through his weight behind the cause of getting his bank's employees back in the office, said that if even a fraction of the companies who are members of the Business Roundtable (a nonprofit that Dimon chairs) follow suit, then the effort would be "unprecedented".

"If a fraction of the members of the Business Roundtable follow suit then you're talking about a more concrete effort than anything we've seen before," Dimon said.

The bank has committed to spending $8 billion to "increase affordable housing and homeownership in underserved communities," JPM said. Another $4 billion will be dedicated to "mortgage refinancing", $2 billion will be spent on "small business lending", and $2 billion in philanthropic capital.

"Systemic racism is a tragic part of America’s history," Dimon said in a statement. "We can do more and do better to break down systems that have propagated racism and widespread economic inequality, especially for Black and Latinx people. It's long past time that society addresses racial inequities in a more tangible, meaningful way."

The bank also committed to "hiring and investment in existing employees to "build a more equitable and representative workforce and hold executives accountable", while promising to hold at least $50 million in deposits at minority-owned financial institutions (free money).

Russian President Vladimir Putin Calls For End to Hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh

The Nagorno-Karabakh region saw an escalation of tension on 27 September, with both Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanging accusations of sparking the hostilities. The military actions in the region continue, despite repeated calls by the international community for a ceasefire and resumption of negotiations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday urged the conflicting sides in the Nagorno-Karabakh military dispute to immediately cease hostilities and exchange prisoners and the bodies of those who have been killed, the Kremlin said.

"After a series of phone conversations with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Russian president calls for an end to hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone for humanitarian reasons in order to exchange prisoners and bodies of those killed," the statement said.

The Russian president invited the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers to arrive in Moscow for negotiations.

"The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia are invited to Moscow on 9 October to hold consultations on these issues with the mediation of the Russian Foreign Minister", the statement added.

The statement followed multiple calls by Russia for a ceasefire in the region, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov outlining that a diplomatic settlement in Karabakh must begin with ceasefire without preconditions.

Calls to end hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh have been voiced by multiple members of international community, including Russia, France, Germany, the UN and the US. Turkey expressed its support to Azerbaijan, while Armenia accused Ankara of sending military advisors to the conflict - a move that Turkey has denied.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region saw an escalation of tension on 27 September, with both Yerevan and Baku accusing each other of sparking military hostilities. According to the Third Secretary of the Azerbaijan Mission to the UN, at least 30 Azeri civilians have been killed and 144 wounded in the conflict. Nagorno-Karabakh Ombudsman Artak Beglaryan said that at least 18 civilians were killed in the unrecognized republic after hostilities broke out.

Among the injured civilians are several journalists, including a Russian blogger, Yuri Kotenok, who was seriously injured in a strike on the Ghazanchetsots church. Doctors are said to be fighting for his life, according to reports.

According to Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Naghdalyan, three Russians suffered injuries, among them two journalists and one local guide.

Federal appeals court reinstates criminal convictions of Hunter Biden's business partner

The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Wednesday reversed a lower court decision to grant a new trial in a fraud case involving Hunter Biden's ex-business partner Devon Archer.

Hunter Biden was not charged in the scheme, but Biden's name was reportedly "invoked at various stages of the fraud as a selling point in transactions."

Archer was indicted on March 26, 2018 and charged with conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud for a Native American tribal bond scheme hatched by Archer and several of his business partners. After a trial lasting approximately one month, the jury found Archer guilty on both counts. Archer asked the district court to set aside the jury's verdict and successfully pushed for a retrial.

Now, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has reinstated the jury's conviction and sent the Archer case back to district court for sentencing. The court summarized the decision as follows: "Because the weight of the evidence presented at trial did not preponderate heavily against the jury's verdict, we find that the district court abused its discretion in vacating the judgment and granting a new trial. Accordingly, the decision of the district court is REVERSED, and the jury verdict is reinstated. The case is REMANDED to the district court for sentencing."

Financial records made public during Archer's 2018 trial revealed large sums of Chinese and Ukrainian money flowing into Archer's and Biden's accounts via a Morgan Stanley account for an entity called Rosemont Seneca Bohai, LLC (RSB). For example, the RSB financial records revealed that Ukraine's largest gas company, Burisma Holdings, funneled millions to Archer and Biden in 2014 and 2015. According to Archer's bank statement, Burisma paid at least $166,666.66 (twin payments of $83,333.33) into Biden and Archer's joint account each month between May 2014 and October 2015.
