According to media reports, the administration is considering new restrictions on Ant Group and Tencent's payment systems.

By specifically going after the payment systems, the Trump Administration is taking a different approach on trying to curtail Chinese tech firms' access to American markets and consumers. Wells Fargo Cuts 700 Jobs As COVID-19-Inspired Bloodletting Begins

Roughly one week after Wells Fargo and a handful of other Wall Street banks announced plans to re-start layoffs now that their coronavirus-inspired (and, in some cases, PPP-inspired) moratoriums had come to an end, the San Francisco-based bank best known in recent years for scamming retail customers and botching small business refi loans has announced the first 700 layoffs in a scheme that will eventually cull tens of thousands of jobs.

According to Bloomberg, Wells is cutting 700 positions from its commercial-banking unit. The bank said the cuts will impact business lines across the division. The commercial banking division typically services businesses with at least $5 million in annual sales, according to a company spokeswoman.

That would suggest that Wells Fargo is cutting back more on the commercial banking side as it re-focuses on its consumer-banking strengths, like mortgages, amid a booming housing market and rock-bottom interest rates.

Wells Fargo has long been the US banking industry's largest employer, given its domestic, retail-oriented focus, and traditional dominance west of the Mississippi.

That Wells was the first US megabank to announce plans to re-start layoffs is hardly surprising: As Bloomberg notes, the bank is under enormous pressure to spend less after slashing its dividend by 80% after Q2 earnings sank deep into the red.

As if the coronavirus-sickened economy and low interest rates weren't enough, Wells is still operating with the albatross of a Federal Reserve cap on balance sheet growth (which had to be eased earlier this year so the bank could participate in the 'Paycheck Protection Program').

To be sure, not all of CEO Charlie Scharf's projected cost-savings will come from layoffs: the bank expects "to reduce the size of our workforce through a combination of attrition, the elimination of open roles and job displacements," one Wells spokeswoman told Bloomberg.

"We are at the beginning of a multiyear effort to build a stronger, more efficient company for our customers, employees, communities and shareholders," Ellis said in a statement. "As part of this work, we will have impacts, including job reductions, in nearly all of our functions and business lines, including commercial banking, where we have started displacements."

While Wells' layoffs probably look huge compared to its American peers, two European banking giants - Deutsche Bank and HSBC - currently have it beat, with both banks planning massive head count reductions that amount to the biggest financial services bloodletting since Lehman.

India launches antitrust probe into Google’s alleged abuse in smart TV market

Silicon Valley giant Google is facing a new antitrust case in India in which it is alleged to have abused its Android operating system’s position in the smart television market.

According to Reuters, citing sources, the case has been filed by two Indian antitrust lawyers, Kshitiz Arya and Purushottam Anand.

One of the sources said the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had directed Google to submit its written responses to the allegations and that the company has sought more time.

The case is Google’s fourth major antitrust challenge in one of its key markets. The tech giant is currently facing public criticism from local Indian startups for enforcing certain policies and company charges they contend hurt their growth.

One of the sources also said that the CCI has since June been looking into allegations that Google engages in anti-competitive practices by creating barriers for firms seeking to use or develop modified versions of Android for smart TVs, such as Amazon Fire TV’s operating system.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI will hold a press conference on Wednesday morning regarding a matter of "national security," which - according to Fox News, will be about the UK-based ISIS terrorists known as "The Beatles" - and not the ongoing Russiagate investigation, as some had initially speculated.

The pair of ISIS operatives will be coming to the United States within the next few weeks to stand trial over their alleged role in the torture and beheadings of US hostages in Syria. In 2015, a British-Kuwaiti militant dubbed "Jihadi John" - believed to be the executioner in the ISIS videos, was killed in a US drone strike.

Update: WaPo just reported that the two ISIS terrorists were charged in the deaths of US hostages.

Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh are in U.S. military custody in Iraq. They were captured by a Kurdish-led militia in early 2018 but brought to Iraq last October.

The men have been accused of taking part in the kidnappings of international hostages, including journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and U.S. aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig. Kotey and Elsheikh have admitted their involvement in the kidnapping, sexual assault and death of Mueller in 2015. -Fox News

The announcement of the press conference initially stoked speculation of some type of action in the ongoing Durham probe of FBI/DOJ conduct during and after the 2016 US election, following revelations that the Obama administration knowingly used fabricated information to target President Trump and his campaign, and that Hillary Clinton allegedly approved a plan to smear then-candidate Trump with Russia rumors.

Frustration has been mounting among Trump and his allies over a lack of progress, along with direct accusations that FBI Director Christopher Wray and CIA Director Gina Haspel are concealing evidence in the case.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed up what smart observers have said all along: that attempts to humiliate his American counterpart by accusing him of ties with Russia only boost the country’s international standing.

Viewed from Moscow, one of the curious things about the Trump presidency has been the manner in which his political and media enemies have consistently attempted to smear him as “Putin’s puppet” or a “Kremlin agent” in domestic US discourse. But this merely upgrades Russia’s status, by making it seem far more powerful than it really is.

“When someone is trying to humiliate or insult the incumbent head of state, they anyway elevate you and me, and talk about our incredible influence and might,” Putin told Rossiya-1 television on Wednesday. “To a certain degree, this plays into our hands.”

The president further stated that the Russian government is not interfering in the US election campaign, and it is up to voters to make their choice about the candidates. He added that Russia is willing to do business with any American president who is selected by the electorate.

“Voters – US citizens, in this case – should assess the positions of candidates to become president of such a power,” he commented. “We are uninvolved onlookers. We are not interfering. We will be ready to work with any future US president, with the person in whom the American people will vest their trust.”

Putin pointed out that there were varying degrees of positives and negatives in bilateral relations during Donald Trump’s time in the office. On the plus side, he particularly lauded the increased trade volume and stabilization in the energy markets, while among regrettable issues, he said, were sanctions and the US withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

Putin also appeared to suggest the Kremlin may be more satisfied with a Joe Biden victory than a second term for the incumbent, citing the Democrat challenger’s willingness to discuss arms control agreements. “Biden has publicly said that he is ready to extend New START [Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty] or to sign a new treaty on limiting strategic offensive weapons,” the Russian leader noted. “It is already a key element of our possible cooperation in the future.”

A federal appeals court rejected President Trump’s latest effort to block the Manhattan district attorney from getting eight years of his tax returns and other financial records, although in light of the recent - and now largely forgotten - NYT leak, does anyone care any more?

The ruling, from a three-judge panel for the Second Circuit Appeals Court affirmed a federal judge's decision in August that rejected Trump's claims that the subpoena from Manhattan Democrat District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. was overly broad and issued in bad faith. Despite the latest loss - Bloomberg points out that Trump has so far failed in all his courtroom efforts, including in the U.S. Supreme Court, to halt the criminal subpoena - it’s unlikely that the NY DA will obtain the records in the 27 days before the presidential election.

As a reminder, the Manhattan DA Office last year subpoenaed Trump's accounting firm, Mazars USA, for the president's personal and business tax returns and other financial records. Trump initially challenged the subpoena by arguing that presidents have sweeping immunity from the criminal process but in July, the Supreme Court rejected that argument and sent the case back to the lower courts for further proceedings. Trump then filed a new complaint that argued that the subpoena is too broad and amounts to presidential harassment.

Trump’s final hope rests, once again, with another appeal to the high court with the president certain to ask the Supreme Court to intervene. In its opinion Wednesday, the New York-based appeals court said Vance has agreed that Trump can seek to appeal to before the district attorney enforces the subpoena. The Supreme Court previously rejected Trump’s claim that he had immunity as president from state grand jury investigations, although now that a conservative judge will replace RBG the outcome may well be different.

Ultimately, with Trump's tax returns now yesterday's news courtesy of a leak to the NYT which seems like an eternity of news cycles ago, few will care even if Trump ultimately does produce his tax returns.

Greece’s far-right Golden Dawn party declared criminal organization in historic ruling as crowds gather in Athens

In a landmark court ruling, Greece’s far-right Golden Dawn party has been found to be operating as a criminal organization. The five-year trial had 68 defendants and included the murder of a rapper and cases of violent attacks.

Protesters held banners comparing the political party, which is controversial for its fiercely anti-immigrant views, to Nazis as they stood outside the Athens courthouse. Videos show the massive crowd filling the main roadway and side streets surrounding the building. Fights broke out in the crowd, with police using tear gas and a water cannon to restore order

In its decision, the court ruled that seven of the party’s former lawmakers, including party leader Michaloliakos, were guilty of running a criminal organization. In total, 68 defendants were involved in the case, including 18 former parliamentarians.

The trial considered four separate criminal charges involving the murder of Greek rapper Pavlos Fyssas in 2013, attacks on migrant fishermen, attacks on left-wing activists and whether Golden Dawn was involved in criminal activity.

The trial began in 2015, after a supporter of Golden Dawn was accused of murdering Fyssas, who was known for his anti-fascist views. As a result, Michaloliakos and more than a dozen party members were arrested and charged with participating in a criminal enterprise. Golden Dawn claims that the trial is a political witch-hunt.

At its peak, Golden Dawn was Greece’s third-most popular party as voters looked for radical change during the nation’s crippling financial crisis. The far-right party lost its remaining seats in parliament in last year’s elections.

Mysterious green fireball lights up Mexican skies, rains fire on northern state

Residents across northeastern Mexico were stunned when a green-hued fireball lit up the night sky on Tuesday. Authorities reported that the fiery debris caused localised bushfires in the vicinity.

Reports came flooding in from across the northern state of Nuevo Leon after the suspected meteorite streaked across the sky at approximately 22:14 local time on Tuesday night.

Eyewitness and doorbell cam videos captured the intensity of the fiery phenomenon as it burned bright through the darkness.

The amazing light show sparked a flurry of speculation online. Some claimed it was merely part of the Draconids meteor shower which is taking place between October 6 and 11, with an estimated frequency of 20 meteorites per hour. Supreme Court Reinstates Witness Signatures For South Carolina Mail-In Ballots

The Supreme Court has upheld the requirement for witness signatures to be on mail-in ballots in South Carolina, overturning lower court rulings.

Democrats Claim Witness Signatures “Risky” During Pandemic

South Carolina had previously had the requirement for witness signatures for all mail-in and absentee ballots. The signatures are meant to combat voter fraud, ensuring at least one other, trackable person has signed off that the ballot is legitimate.

However, lower courts had ruled that the requirement was a “risky imposition” during the current coronavirus pandemic, USA Today reported.

Republican legislators had urged the Supreme Court to overturn these rulings.

“Each passing day increases the risk that ballots will be returned that, in mistaken reliance on the district court’s injunction, do not comply with the witness requirement,” one Republican official argued.

South Carolina Democrats instead insisted the Supreme Court stick by the intial ruling of the lower courts, arguing that “the witness requirement increases the risk of COVID-19 infection and transmission and unconstitutionally burdens the right to vote.”

Democrats also argued that ruling in favor of witness signaturies would put a “burden” on black voters, “whose communities have been hit disproportionately hard by COVID-19.”

Temporary SCOTUS Ruling Keeps Signatures in SC, For Now

While the case continues through the court, an initial ruling has been granted by the Supreme Court to ensure that witness signatures will be required on all ballots.

When both parties in Congress came together in March to pass the CARES Act, which was signed into law by President Trump on March 27, the clear intention of the legislation was for the U.S. Treasury to hand over $454 billion of taxpayers’ money to the Federal Reserve. The Fed, in turn, was to leverage the money by 10 times to approximately $4.54 trillion to deploy to keep the economy moving, credit flowing, workers employed and businesses alive until the pandemic had been brought under control.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell made an unprecedented appearance on the Today show on March 26 and explained the plan like this:

“In certain circumstances like the present, we do have the ability to essentially use our emergency lending authorities and the only limit on that will be how much backstop we get from the Treasury Department. We’re required to get full security for our loans so that we don’t lose money. So the Treasury puts up money as we estimate what the losses might be…Effectively $1 of loss absorption of backstop from Treasury is enough to support $10 of loans.”

But according to the latest H.4.1 release from the Federal Reserve (and backed up by recent Senate Testimony), six months after the CARES Act was signed into law, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has handed only $114 billion of the $454 billion over to the Fed. That leaves $340 billion allocated by Congress unaccounted for. (See Paragraph 5 (Liabilities) and the related footnote 14 at this link on the Fed’s H.4.1 release.)

The Federal Reserve’s H.4.1 release shows that the $114 billion it has received thus far from the Treasury has been allocated as follows: $10 billion to the Commercial Paper Funding Facility (CPFF); $37.5 billion to the Corporate Credit Facilities; $37.5 billion to the Main Street Facilities; $17.5 billion to the Municipal Liquidity Facility; $10 billion to the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF II); and $1.5 billion to the Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility.

The bulk of those programs are helping Wall Street, not Main Street. The one program actually called the “Main Street Facilities,” bears little resemblance to the kind of help actual Main Street businesses need right now. Minimum loan amounts in the Fed’s Main Street program are set at $250,000 while many businesses on real Main Streets in America would be highly reluctant to take a loan of that size, given the likely prospect right now that their business won’t make it.

What these businesses need more of are Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP) loans where the loan will be forgiven if they keep their workers on payroll. That would allow workers to avoid eviction and help small apartment building landlords stay out of foreclosure. The PPP program, run through the Small Business Administration, ended on August 8. Despite the desperate need, Congress can’t get its act together and pass a new PPP program.

WASHINGTON — The five U.S. attorneys along the border with Mexico, including three appointed by President Trump, recoiled in May 2018 against an order to prosecute all undocumented immigrants even if it meant separating children from their parents. They told top Justice Department officials they were “deeply concerned” about the children’s welfare.

But the attorney general at the time, Jeff Sessions, made it clear what Mr. Trump wanted on a conference call later that afternoon, according to a two-year inquiry by the Justice Department’s inspector general into Mr. Trump’s “zero tolerance” family separation policy.

“We need to take away children,” Mr. Sessions told the prosecutors, according to participants’ notes. One added in shorthand: “If care about kids, don’t bring them in. Won’t give amnesty to people with kids.”

Rod J. Rosenstein, then the deputy attorney general, went even further in a second call about a week later, telling the five prosecutors that it did not matter how young the children were. He said that government lawyers should not have refused to prosecute two cases simply because the children were barely more than infants.

“Those two cases should not have been declined,” John Bash, the departing U.S. attorney in western Texas, wrote to his staff immediately after the call. Mr. Bash had declined the cases, but Mr. Rosenstein had overruled him. “Per the A.G.’s policy, we should NOT be categorically declining immigration prosecutions of adults in family units because of the age of a child.”

The Justice Department’s top officials were “a driving force” behind the policy that spurred the separation of thousands of families, many of them fleeing violence in Central America and seeking asylum in the United States, before Mr. Trump abandoned it amid global outrage, according to a draft report of the results of the investigation by Michael E. Horowitz, the department’s inspector general.

The separation of migrant children from their parents, sometimes for months, was at the heart of the Trump administration’s assault on immigration. But the fierce backlash when the administration struggled to reunite the children turned it into one of the biggest policy debacles of the president’s term.

Though Mr. Sessions sought to distance himself from the policy, allowing Mr. Trump and Homeland Security Department officials to largely be blamed, he and other top law enforcement officials understood that “zero tolerance” meant that migrant families would be separated and wanted that to happen because they believed it would deter future illegal immigration, Mr. Horowitz wrote.

“The department’s single-minded focus on increasing prosecutions came at the expense of careful and effective implementation of the policy, especially with regard to prosecution of family-unit adults and the resulting child separations,” the draft report said.

The draft report, citing more than 45 interviews with key officials, emails and other documents, provides the most complete look at the discussions inside the Justice Department as the family separation policy was developed, pushed and ultimately carried out with little concern for children.

This article is based on a review of the 86-page draft report and interviews with three government officials who read it in recent months and described its conclusions and many of the details in it. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to discuss it publicly, cautioned that the final report could change.

Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced just put the Dems hopes for Florida on notice by publicly endorsing President Trump’s re-election try.

Florida may very well come down to the Puerto Rican vote – this voting group is not monolithic and the Dems have taken them for granted for years. This year they are making a huge attempt to use that voting block to give Biden the edge in the key state of Florida. This is a big blow to their efforts.

“I ask all Puerto Ricans who are listening to go vote,” the Republican governor told Telemundo. “They have to go to vote, exercise their right to vote and evaluate who has represented being a person who thinks about Puerto Ricans and their needs at the most difficult moment: It is Donald Trump.”

According to the Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día, Vázquez Garced was scheduled to appear at a campaign event with Trump in Central Florida last Friday, with the governor saying she had been invited to travel on Air Force One to hold a meeting on Puerto Rico.

However, the event was canceled after news broke of Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

In Tuesday’s interview, when asked about Trump throwing paper towels to a group of Puerto Ricans during a 2017 visit to the island in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Vázquez Garced said voters should not dwell on the image, adding that “nobody is perfect.”

The Republican governor has repeatedly brought attention to her rapport with Trump, suggesting at a February rally that the president would otherwise not provide federal funds to the island territory.

Last month, the Trump administration announced it would provide an additional $13 billion in aid to Puerto Rico to assist in infrastructure redevelopment following the 2017 natural disaster.

When asked why it had taken so long to release the aid for Puerto Rico, Trump said it had been in the works for some time and blamed Democrats for the delay.

However, the funds had already been allocated to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, meaning the administration could have distributed them at any point in the preceding months.

“This is clearly a desperate, political stunt to win over Puerto Rican supporters,” Tatiana Matta, Latino adviser to the Biden campaign, said in a statement following the announcement.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The three U.S. House of Representatives Democrats seeking the influential chairmanship of the Foreign Affairs Committee are meeting with donors and staff of pro-Israel groups and asking them to lobby the party leadership.

Reps. Brad Sherman of California, Gregory Meeks of New York and Joaquin Castro of Texas have or will soon have Zoom meetings with the Democratic Majority for Israel, a group that embraces pro-Israel policies close to the establishment pro-Israel community, as well as with J Street, the liberal Jewish Middle East policy group.

Eliot Engel of New York, the current committee chairman, was defeated in a primary this summer by a progressive, Jamaal Bowman. Engel is seen as one of the most reliable pro-Israel voices in Congress and opposed the Iran deal. Whoever replaces him will face growing calls from the party’s left-wing to put more pressure on Israel when it comes to reaching a two-state agreement with the Palestinians.

In the DMFI meetings, Meeks and Sherman clarified what appeared to be their earlier endorsement of a proposal, popular among the party’s left, that Congress should ban assistance to Israel from being used to annex parts of the West Bank. They said they were simply pointing out that defense assistance cannot in any case be used for annexation or for other uses. Castro is set to meet with DMFI on Monday evening.

Meeks met privately with J Street last week, and meetings with Castro and Sherman are scheduled for this week. J Street has said it favors pressuring Israel to keep it from annexing territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said earlier this year he is ready to annex parts of the West Bank, but instead forged a normalization deal with Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates that was contingent on putting aside the annexation plans. [This appears to be temporary]

Democrats are expected to retain their majority and control of committees after the Nov. 3 election.

Committee chairmanships are decided by caucus votes but are heavily influenced by the preferences of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the caucus leadership. Democratic donors, among them those whose main issue is Middle East policy [e.g. Haim Saban], lobby the leadership to advance favored lawmakers to leading positions.

Oprah Winfrey: America’s Racial ‘Caste System’ Was the ‘Template for Nazi Germany’

Billionaire multimedia mogul Oprah Winfrey described America’s “caste system” as “the template for Nazi Germany” in an interview with Isabel Wilkerson, author of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, for the latest episode of her Apple TV series, Oprah’s Book Club.

Wilkerson, an alumnus of the New York Times, characterized Caste as an analysis of what she describes as a race-based American “caste system.”

“How did you decide to focus the book on three cast systems, India, Nazi Germany, and the United States? I think a lot of people get riled up and offended that you’re comparing the caste system here to Nazi Germany, yet we discover that we were the template for Nazi Germany,” Winfrey said.

Adolf Hitler drew inspiration from American eugenicists in formulating the Nuremberg laws, noted Wilkerson and Winfrey. Neither acknowledged Margaret Sanger’s prominence in America’s eugenicist movement.

America’s racial “caste system,” Winfrey alleged, includes “systemic racism” and “microaggressions.”

Wilkerson explained the rationale behind her deliberate omission of the terms “racism” and “racist” in her writings, describing the terms as broadly ineffective and overused literary tools of persuasion in the context of her political polemics:

In the stories that I did for the New York Times, I didn’t use the word. In The Warmth of Other Suns, word does not appear. I pointedly stand here, sit here, stating that I don’t use the word and it’s for a reason. I think that it’s a word that is often misunderstood. It’s a word that has many different meanings to different people, even though social scientists have a singular definition for it, which would be prejudice plus the power to enforce that prejudice institutionally.

I don’t use the word because I think that we stop hearing what it means when we’ve heard something for so long, and which can be misinterpreted by so many different people.

I believe that [Caste] is a focus on the infrastructure of our divisions. It’s a focus in on what lies beneath, what we think we see, and it focuses us on the structure of a thing and that allows us to see how race has essentially been the cue and the signifier of where a person fits in that hierarchy.

Oprah Winfrey also falsely accused President Donald Trump of praising white nationalists in Charlottesville as “very fine people,” echoing the falsehood upon which Joe Biden’s latest presidential campaign was launched.

All episodes of The Oprah Conversation, Winfrey’s second eponymous series on Apple TV, have focused on racial politics. And the billionaire media mogul isn’t showing signs of letting up on this kind of political fare.

“Whiteness still gives you an advantage, no matter what,” declared Winfrey in the first episode of The Oprah Conversation. She described “white privilege” as a social force affording advantages to whites at the expense of blacks. She later warned how “whiteness” can be used “as a weapon.”

Sources representing prime minister’s wife say haircut was necessary for her appearance in a public service video urging Israelis to comply with virus rules

The wife of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu violated virus lockdown restrictions by having a hairdresser come to the premier’s official Jerusalem residence, according to a Wednesday report, the latest in a series of high profile figures to be accused of disregarding rules meant to stem Israel’s runaway infection rate.

Sara Netanyahu had the hairdresser come to the residence, on Jerusalem’s Balfour Street, on Friday, the eve of the Sukkot holiday, Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

Lockdown regulations forbid Israelis from entering other people’s homes for non-essential purposes. Hairdressers are not considered essential.

It was unclear whether she would pay a fine for violating the lockdown regulations. The law stipulates a NIS 500 fine for being in another person’s home, though that is generally levied on the visitor, not the host.

The report said that sources representing Sara Netanyahu confirmed the hairdresser came to the residence, but that she believed the taxpayer-funded haircut was allowed because it was for an appearance in an informational PR video. According to the report, the prime minister has been allowed to continue having his hair done due to his public appearances.

“Sara Netanyahu strictly adheres to the Health Ministry guidelines. During the lockdown she did not leave home and she manages her work routine as a child psychologist mainly through Zoom meetings and telephone calls,” the sources said. “Before the Sukkot holiday, Mrs. Netanyahu filmed an informational video in the service of the public in which she called on everyone to wear masks. Since she is an influential public figure and this was an informational video in the service of the public, she assumed she was allowed to use the services of a hairdresser.”

Both Sara Netanyahu and the barber wore masks and gloves, and she “even asked the barber to avoid conversation out of caution,” the statement said.

In the video, published on Sara Netanyahu’s personal Instagram account, she called on the public to wear masks and stick to distancing rules.

Munitions explode at military base near Ryazan in central Russia after fire

MOSCOW, October 7. /TASS/. An ammunition depot went on fire on the territory of a military garrison near Ryazan in central Russia, with sporadic explosions taking place, the press office of the Western Military District reported on Wednesday.

The blaze occurred near the settlement of Zheltukhino after the grass caught fire, the press office said.

"A gusty wind spread the fire to the artillery ammunition storage site. The military garrison’s on-duty fire-fighting team started to extinguish the blaze but failed to stop the fire outbreak. Sporadic munition explosions are currently observed on the technical premises of the military base," the Western Military District said.

Reports from the scene say that the military and civilian personnel have been evacuated and there are no injuries.

According to an emergency service source, the fire continues to spread because of wind gusts and the shells are exploding nearly every ten seconds. "The fire has not been contained and the shells are exploding about every ten seconds," the source said.

The local fire-fighting and rescue service has sent teams and a fire-fighting train to the scene of the incident. An Il-76 plane of Russia’s Emergencies Ministry is ready to join the fire-fighting effort.

Traffic on the R-22 "Kaspiy" highway has been halted. According to the Emergencies Ministry, over 1,600 locals, including almost 150 children, have been evacuated from 14 settlements in the Ryazan Region. "According to preliminary data, over 1,600 people have been evacuated from 14 settlements," the Ministry's press service said.

"Evacuation has been organized in cooperation with Skopinsky District's authorities," the regional government disclosed. "First and foremost, all children have been evacuated from the settlements: 130 schoolchildren and 16 younger children. All of them are currently with their relatives, in a safe zone."

Top Democrats introduce resolution calling for mask mandate, testing program in Senate

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), the top Democrat on the Rules Committee, are pushing for the chamber to require masks and establish a formal testing program amid a spike in new cases.

The two top Democrats introduced a resolution on Wednesday, which would also call for the enforcement of social distancing requirements either in the Senate office buildings or the Senate-side of the Capitol and a contact-tracing program.

“Senate Republicans must join us here in reality and acknowledge that through their inaction, they are creating a truly dangerous situation," Schumer said in a statement.

Klobuchar added that the resolution includes "common sense measures our government must have in place to protect the Senate community, including our staff, and to fully function during this pandemic."

The resolution would throw Senate support behind the chamber following public health guidelines and call the lack of a "coordinated and comprehensive COVID–19 strategy in the Senate … a threat to the legislative branch."

The two Democratic senators are also calling for a ban on a person going to the Senate floor or to a committee after a positive coronavirus test and until a person tests negative, and that any person that has either had the coronavirus or has been exposed to it get two negative tests on separate days before returning to the Capitol. Neither of those details are specifically included in the resolution.

The resolution comes after three GOP senators tested positive for the coronavirus and another three are quarantining due to exposure to their colleagues.

In total five senators are known to have tested positive for the coronavirus so far this year: Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Sens. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Tim Kaine (D-Va.) have said they have tested positive for coronavirus antibodies, suggesting they were previously exposed to the virus.

A Rundown Of Major U.S. Corporate Media’s Business Ties To China

It seems a number of major US media outlets have financial ties to the Chinese Communist Party, and it shows in their coverage.

Despite the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) record of oppression, corporate media outlets are parroting the authoritarian government’s propaganda, even in the midst of an outbreak the CCP worsened through a cover-up. Many of those media outlets have financial ties to Chinese companies with intense oversight from the CCP.

“You often see representatives from American companies with financial ties to China naturally become defenders of the CCP’s policies and spreading the CCP’s propaganda,” said Helen Raleigh, an author and senior contributor at The Federalist who emigrated from China. “The financial tie means these Americans will be much less likely to challenge China’s human rights record or unacceptable demand such as technology transfer.”

We do not know the extent of editorial oversight from corporations and individuals with financial incentives to placate the CCP, if any. But we know the incentives exist, and that’s worth understanding. Below is a breakdown of financial ties between major U.S. media organizations and the CCP.

The New York Times

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim owns 17.4 percent of The New York Times through the company’s Class A shares. As the largest shareholder, his investment allows him to vote for approximately one-third of the company’s board.

In 2009, Slim loaned $250 million to The New York Times Company, the parent company of the New York Times. That same year, Slim purchased 15.9 million Class A shares of the company.

Slim has regularly conducted business with Chinese companies with overt ties to the CCP. In 2017, Slim’s Giant Motors joined ventures with China’s JAC Motors and began manufacturing cars in Mexico to sell in the Latin America Market. According to Forbes, the goal of selling to Latin America was to circumvent the Trump administration’s trade policies aimed at protecting American jobs — a move that benefited the Beijing in the Chinese-American trade wars.

According to Bloomberg Law, Slim’s company America Movil is teaming up with CCP telecommunication giant Huawei Technologies to pitch a 5G pilot project to the Colombian government this year. Huawei is actively working to undermine American security interests by overturning legislation in the United States that bans the use of Huawei’s 5G network.

“Huawei seeks to overturn U.S. legislation that prohibits our federal government from using its equipment. This is a blatant attempt by an allegedly vital cog in the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) intelligence apparatus to avail itself of rights China would never confer on U.S. corporations––let alone its own citizens––in a bid to thwart America’s national security interests,” writes The Federalist’s Ben Weingarten.

Slim is making all kinds of lucrative business deals with the Chinese government while influencing the buiness side of The New York Times. He may not sit in on editorial meetings, but all the paper’s leaders certainly know who is funding their salaries.

In 2013, Amazon CEO and billionaire Jeff Bezos purchased the Washington Post for $250 million cash. In January 2016, Bezos laid out a new business plan for the Post aimed at incorporating more technology.

Bezos has direct ties to the Chinese business market, which is regulated by the CCP. The production of Amazon’s most popular products—including the Amazon Echo and Kindle e-reader— take place almost exclusively in Chinese factories. According to Newsweek, Amazon’s products are produced by Chinese laborers who work long hours with low pay and little safety training.

Those arrested include illegal immigrants with convictions or charges for homicide and sex offenses

The Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday announced that it had detained 128 illegal immigrants in a five-day operation in California last week, including those with convictions and charges for crimes including murder, child sex offenses and domestic violence.

Operation Rise, conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2 in the Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco areas, nabbed 128 illegal immigrants. Officials said 96 percent of those arrested had convictions or pending charges for crimes including homicide, sexual assault, sexual offenses against children, weapons offenses and domestic violence.

The operations all targeted sanctuary cities, where local law enforcement are restricted in their ability to cooperate with federal law enforcement. That frequently involves ignoring ICE detainers, which are requests that an illegal immigrant about to be released be held until ICE can take them into custody.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf gave the example of a 40-year-old man from El Salvador who was convicted of first-degree murder in 2009, sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. In August, ICE issued a detainer, but it was ignored by the Los Angeles County jail and the illegal immigrant was released into the community. He was arrested in last week's operation.

Wolf tore into those politicians who have enacted or continue to enforce “sanctuary city” policies, which he said puts politics over public safety.

With millions of extra names on voter rolls across the country, Judicial Watch is fighting state and local governments nationwide to ensure clean and fair elections. Recent efforts to pressure both Pennsylvania and North Carolina to clean up their dirty voter rolls have forced the state of Pennsylvania to admit that state counties had given the Federal Government incorrect voter registration data. “They also confirmed that among 18 counties that have 25% of the registrations, they’ve removed a total of 15 names under the NVRA Process.” State-wide, a total of 17 were removed from a list of roughly 1.1 million.

A recent Pennsylvania court decision, ruling that ballots could be counted up to 3 days after the election doesn’t help, according to Fitton. “The Left’s solution is to count ballots for days, weeks after election day. It encourages people to game the process.” Fitton has described the system of unsolicited mail-in-ballots as “pernicious.” “It’s not fact based, it’s ideological… you are more likely to have your vote intercepted, challenged, thrown out or lost if you vote by mail.”

What’s more, in Fitton’s words – “the Left has said that on election day it may look like Trump wins, but if they continue to count the ballots after the fact and the outcome changes, you’re not allowed to question how that happened.” Now involving big tech, the Left is now also censoring Judicial Watch videos about voter rolls. “Judicial watch is a nationally recognized expert on election issues, and these leftists at big tech companies are going to be suppressing information about the risks to clean election for ideological reasons?” Fitton, undeterred by these attacks – continues to do the heavy lifting at Judicial Watch to support clean and fair elections nationwide.

France & Germany To Push For EU Sanctions On Russia's GRU Over Navalny

France and Germany announced Wednesday they will push for European sanctions on Russia - specifically Kremlin intelligence officials - over the alleged poisoning of Alexei Navalny with what German authorities believe was a Russian-produced nerve agent.

A joint statement essentially faulted lack of adequate Russian response giving "no credible explanation" to the allegations which many observers have seen as an eerily familiar repeat to the Skipral affair in the UK.

“No credible explanation has been provided by Russia so far. In this context, we consider that there is no other plausible explanation for Mr Navalny’s poisoning than a Russian involvement and responsibility,” Foreign Ministers Jean-Yves Le Drian and Heiko Maas said in their joint statement Wednesday.

The proposal is expected during a meeting of 27 EU foreign ministers scheduled for next Monday. The sanctions are expected to target Russian GRU military intelligence officials.

“Drawing the necessary conclusions from these facts, France and Germany will share with European partners proposals for additional sanctions,” the two ministers added. “Proposals will target individuals deemed responsible for this crime and breach of international norms, based on their official function, as well as an entity involved in the Novichok program.”

Russia will no doubt see this as an 'absence of evidence means Russia must have done it' type charge which it's been subject to the in the past amid a charged anti-Moscow atmosphere, spurned on also by the United States.

The allegation that Novichok was involved, again in a seeming replay of the Skipral case, is what has left skeptics scratching their heads, given it's a Cold War era military grade nerve-agent which was developed only by the Soviet Union. This has left some to point out how bizarre the plot is, given how "obvious" Russian fingerprints behind such an "assassination attempt" would be.

Meanwhile Navalny in his first major interview since recovering and leaving the Berlin hospital told Der Spiegel: "I assert that Putin was behind the crime."

The official Kremlin response was even more interesting, which said via state media sources that "Western intelligence agencies – in particular, agents from the American CIA – are working with Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny," according to Putin’s spokesman.

Tides Center Funnels $170 Million in Taxpayer Money to Left-Wing Groups

Nearly $170 million in government grants has passed through a liberal dark money behemoth that houses numerous left-wing groups, including the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, tax forms show.

The taxpayer-funded grants were disbursed to groups through the Tides Center, a San Francisco-based nonprofit incubator that wealthy liberal donors use to bankroll progressive causes. A number of radical left-wing groups have fallen under the auspices of the Tides Center, which acts as a "fiscal sponsor" to nonprofits by providing its 501(c)(3) tax and legal status. This arrangement lets the groups under its umbrella avoid registering with the IRS.

The grants went to liberal initiatives housed at the Tides Center over a 17-year span between 2001 and 2018 and have steadily increased over time, according to a review of the center's tax data.

"The Tides Center is as liberal and politically active as they come; its entire purpose is to create new activist groups," said Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center. "For example, we recently revealed that the Tides Center sponsors the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, one of the top groups in the Marxist-led BLM movement. It's fair to question whether tax dollars sourced from all Americans should flow to nonprofits that have such an open ideological axe to grind."

Walter noted that the Tides Center's recipient profile on USASpending.gov, which posts government grants, shows $34 million in federal funding since 2008. The grants were primarily from the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Department of Health and Human Services. While USASpending is meant to inform the public of where government grants are coming from and where they are going, it contains incomplete data. During the period of time in which the website says the Tides Center received $34 million in federal funding, the group's own tax forms show that it had received $139 million in government grants.

Two “undecided” voters featured during an NBC News town hall earlier this week were not “undecided” voters at all. They were voters who had previously announced their support for Biden on MSNBC back in August, according to a report from Washington Free Beacon.

Lawyer Peter Gonzalez and marketing executive Ismael Llano posed questions to Biden during a town hall on Monday, when he appeared before what the network described as an “audience of undecided Florida voters.”

Both Gonzalez and Llano, however, were featured in an MSNBC segment in August to explain why they support Biden. “If we get four more years of Trump, good luck, and good luck with the future attracting younger voters,” Gonzalez said as an MSNBC chyron noted he was “voting for Biden.” Llano was also identified as “voting for Biden” and offered praise for the former vice president.

NBC’s Lester Holt described Llano as someone who “voted for Hillary Clinton four years ago but has voted Republican in the past.”

Gonzalez, however, gave Biden a softball question clearly designed to give him the opportunity to ease concerns about his being beholden to the radical left.

“Cuban American and Venezuelan voters here in South Florida are being targeted with messages by the Trump campaign claiming that a vote for Joe Biden is a vote for the radical left and socialism, and even communism,” Gonzalez said. “What can you tell people in my family, my friends—who are understandably concerned with that issue—that would make them feel comfortable voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris?”

The Free Beacon has compiled clips of the so-called “undecided voters” from Monday night and compared them to what the voters had previously said on MSNBC.

This is not the first time anti-Trump voters have been presented as undecided by the media. Last month ABC News did the same, featuring multiple anti-Trump voters as undecided.

These networks are so afraid to let legitimate undecided voters ask Joe Biden questions that they’re actually putting on Biden supporters who have previously appeared on and were presumably vetted by the same network.

“It is time to start rolling back some of these restrictions in an orderly and sensible way and the president has provided his Opening the United States Again plan that provides a sensible approach, framework, to that,” Barr said during an "#AsktheAG" Q&A session on Twitter.

In response to one Twitter user who asked how Barr planned to address state and local officials infringing on constitutional rights, the attorney general said that while governments had the right to impose “reasonable and temporary restrictions” during times of emergency, they must justify those restrictions as truly necessary and “ensure there are not other ways to address the interests that are less burdensome.

“Now that the curve has been flattened and the hospital system has not been overwhelmed, it is time to start rolling back some of those restrictions,” Barr reiterated.

“We will be on the lookout for restrictions that are too widespread, too generalized or unduly discriminatory towards liberty, such as religious liberty or speech, and in the appropriate case we would consider taking action."

Another user asked Barr to halt “unconstitutional contact tracing.” “End this invasion of privacy & violation of our rights,” the user wrote.

When asked how the DOJ was responding to COVID-19 scams, Barr said the department has been successful in identifying fraudulent websites and arresting those engaged.

Barr warned viewers not to give personal information to anyone, and to be on the lookout for people selling fake cures or anyone asking for bank account information promising a government deposit.

The session attracted angry critics, with many asking about the risk inmates face amid the COVID-19 crisis.

“Why does DOJ/BOP refuse to release prisoners who pose ZERO threat to society despite the increasing number of deaths happening in federal prisons due to COVID-19?” asked Rep. Bobby Rush, D.-Ill.

Barr replied to the Democratic congressman that the Department of Justice had used its authority under the First Step Act to move nearly 5,000 prisoners who were considered vulnerable to COVID-19 from incarceration to home confinement, and had another 1,000 “in the pipeline” to be moved.

A Seattle artist filmed himself laughing about how the city is apparently paying him to restore a Black Lives Matter mural outside the CHOP zone by putting some (crappy) designs on it and writing "ACAB" and "F*** 12."

The artist's video was shared on Monday by popular right-wing Twitter user Kitty Shackleford, who gets tons of great clips from antifa and leftists' streams.

Imagine thinking you're a revolutionary fighting the system when you're getting paid by the system to take part in said "revolution."

Note the "100% Antifa" tag.

That appears to be a reference to the "manifesto" of Antifa terrorist Michael Reinoehl who murdered Trump supporter Aaron Danielson in Portland in late August.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a Wednesday interview on ABC’s The View said that Americans “should be concerned” about President Donald Trump‘s denial about the seriousness of the novel coronavirus.

“I think we should be concerned because of the virus and its viciousness,” said the highest-ranking Democrat, “but also because of the denial that the president is in, saying things like ‘Don’t worry about it,’… ‘Don’t be afraid of it,’ and all that because people have lost their loved ones.”

President Trump, in his Monday tweet announcing that he would be returning to the White House after receiving treatment for his COVID-19 diagnosis, also urged Americans to not “be afraid of Covid” and to not “let it dominate your life.” Many commentators and experts lambasted him for these remarks, saying that they were insensitive to the pain felt by the loved ones of the over 210,000 Americans that have been killed by the virus and that they underplay the severity of the virus.

Throughout the entirety of the pandemic, Democrats and many health experts have criticized the president for his overall handling of the virus. And Speaker Pelosi has joined in those calls and on Wednesday she did so by suggesting that the president’s team should stage an intervention for him.

A top Long Island Democratic fundraiser and former Suffolk County legislator will serve as chairman of “Keep America Great,” a new super PAC whose sole mission is to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.

The PAC “is a nationwide grassroots organization to bring everyone together – Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Conservatives, young, old – it’s a place to unite in a common goal: We must stop Donald Trump from being president,” Jon Cooper told LIBN.

Rather than rally around a specific candidate, the super PAC claims to be the first grassroots organization formed to stop a candidate. The group is planning TV ads and an aggressive digital marketing campaign, as well as establishing chapters on more than 100 college campuses.

The PAC is the brainchild of Nate Lerner, the organization’s executive director, whose political background includes working on Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign as well as a Pittsburgh mayoral race.

Also playing a key role is Scott Dworkin, who served as a senior advisor to draft Vice President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president. A senior advisor to the PAC, Dworkin also worked on both of Obama’s presidential campaigns.

Both Dworkin and Francesca Lucia, the PAC’s national finance director, currently work at Bulldog Finance Group, a political firm based in Washington.

Cooper, the president of Westbury-based manufacturer Spectronics, recently served as national finance chair in the effort to draft Biden. It was because of his work on that campaign that Keep America Great approached him.

Cooper agreed to step in as chairman because “the future of our nation is literally at stake.” In a statement released to the media, Cooper said that Trump’s

“recent racist attacks against a respected federal judge, his fervent support of assault weapons even after the mass murder in Orlando, his mocking of people with disabilities – these all provide a window into his heart and soul. And that should give all fair-minded Americans pause.”

Already, the PAC appears to have traction.

“We’re in touch with a dozen A-list celebrities – top names from Hollywood and Broadway stars,” Cooper said. “We’ve had dozens of offer from young people to do videos for social media.”

The PAC began making national headlines late Wednesday. After an item about it appeared on CNN, the donation page for the PAC briefly crashed because of traffic.

Cooper believes this momentum is just the beginning.

“One million people making a $10 contribution can make a difference,” he said.

Over 100 Syrians Killed, Injured In Recent Al-Bab Bombing

The number of people killed in the recent bombing in the Turkish-occupied city of al-Bab in the northern countryside of Aleppo has risen to 19, Enab Baladi reported on October 6.

“The death toll from the al-Bab bombing has risen to 19, including four children,” Hamza Yusuf, a local director of the White Helmets, told the pro-opposition outlet, “82 were wounded, among them serious cases.”

The bombing, that was caused by a booby-trapped vehicle parked near al-Bab’s main bus station, also resulted in some serious material losses. At least two buildings were wiped out.

This was the second explosion to rock al-Bab this month. On October 3, three policemen were killed when an explosion rocked their checkpoint on the entrance of the city.

Kurdish forces were accused by several pro-opposition sources of orchestrating the recent bombing in al-Bab. Groups like the Afrin Liberation Forces and the Wrath of Olives Operations Room are known for carrying out attacks on Turkish-occupied areas in northern Aleppo.

Al-Bab locals organized a general strike on October 7 to protest against the sluggishness and incompetence of Turkish military and its proxies, which were responsible for the recent bombings.

The repeated attacks on Turkish-occupied areas may eventually lead to a serious crisis between Turkish forces and the locals.

But while the people, SMEs and Main Street businesses continue to suffer incalculable losses, top-tier investment banks are quietly consolidating their wealth and power in the form of debt. Amazingly, most of the public haven’t yet worked out how badly they’ve been swindled by their elected leaders and the banking cartels.

A recent Bloomberg article shows the incredible levels of growth in deposits at the largest US banks, but in reality this merely reflects the billions in federal stimulus money which has been pumped into the system – and more importantly it reflects the disturbing trend of consolidation in the US banking industry which has been building over the last few decades. In other words: banks who enjoy economies of scale will continue to ride the current rigged ‘pandemic’ environment, enjoying the relative low cost of capital passing between smaller and larger banks – with larger banks enjoying the biggest advantage.

Likewise, in the corporate sphere, those transnational companies who also have easy and cheap access to the banks’ unlimited capital – are expanding and taking over markets, making money hand-over-fist because of a collapse in competitors’ performance during the ‘pandemic.’ Notably, Silicon Valley and other monopolist firms have accrued record profits, with U.S. billionaires taking the lion share as their fortunes soared by $434 billion in just the first two months of lockdown alone. Chief among those cashing in on the pandemic were Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg who logged the biggest financial gains.

One of the biggest artificial bubbles has been inflated by the UK government who are now £2 trillion in the hole. Under the colour of Corona, Boris Johnson’s government has all but handed-over large sections of the economy and public sector to their smiling creditors in the City of London.

It is the largest financial coup in history, and the mainstream media are hardly talking about it.

Bishop Schneider told LifeSite should there be a mandatory global vaccine for coronavirus derived from cell lines from aborted babies, “then we will enter into the time of the Apocalypse.”

Last week Bishop Athanasius Schneider laid out an ‘apocalypse’ scenario regarding forced global vaccines derived from aborted babies. It was likely missed amid the flurry of the Presidential debates and the President and First Lady contracting Coronavirus and his hospitalization. Today, we’re going to unpack Bishop Schneider’s statements.

Bishop Schneider told LifeSite should there be a mandatory global vaccine for coronavirus derived from cell lines from aborted babies, “then we will enter into the time of the Apocalypse.”

On October 4th, Russian military blog RSOTM (Reverse side of the medal), known for its links to Russian PMCs published a report providing a closer look at actions of Turkey’s MIT (Milliy Istihbarat Tashkilati), Ankara’s intelligence agency, in the field of support of terrorist and various radicals around the world.

In particular, the report details the case of MIT-linked militant emissary, Elar Parpiev (born on December 24th, 1989). His place of birth is Uzbekistan, Fergha region, Besharik district.

When he became a MIT agent, he was given Turkish credentials, with his name being Mehmed Aldag, born on June 14th, 1997. His Turkish passport number is A06F36993 and it is valid through to October 29th, 2027.

His cover story is that he is an “Islamic spiritual mentor” and an employee of the charity organization IHH Foundation and other firms with funding from Qatar.

His special areas of work focus on “Afghan terrorists, Tawhid wal Jihad, Katibat al-Imam Bukhari, Gurab” and Central Asian states, in general.

Mehmed (Parpiev Elyar Muminzhanovich) is a citizen of Uzbekistan. He actively participated in the ranks of ISIS, from there he moved to the Idlib groups, and from there he received a promotion, starting to work in Turkey.

Parpiev establishes contacts with the leaders of terrorist groups, sends them money received from Turkish intelligence, receives and checks reports on spending money, works on recruiting groups of people in Turkey from among the citizens of member states of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) as well as Uighurs. He actively conducts propaganda among the citizens of CIS member states in madrasahs in Turkey.

Mehmed is reportedly considered a very valuable employee by Turkish intelligence. He often uses forged documents on business trips from the IHH foundation in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan.

Under the pretext of “good intentions”, Mehmed collects data and recruits people.

Turkish MIT has actively begun to establish contact with terrorist groups whose members are natives of Central Asia. Only in the last month, Turkey, according to the report, has sent militants from Afghanistan to groups such as:

Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan)

Union of Islamic Jihad (Kyrgyzstan)

Ansarulloh (Tajikistan)

Guraba Khurasan (Uyghurs)

Turkey is working with the help of its “tamed” terrorists not only in Libya, Syria, Azerbaijan, but they have already actively begun to work with their terrorists against Central Asian states.

This report provides some insight into how Turkey spreads its influence and infiltrates itself in various conflicts in the Middle East, as well as in Africa as the example of Libya is still present.

Currently, more and more evidence surfaces online that members of Turkish-backed radical militant groups from Syria poor into the Nagorno-Karagbakh conflict zone where the Armenian-Azerbaijani war has been raging. These militants participate in the conflict on the side of Turkey’s ally, Azerbaijan, and has reportedly already suffered notable casualties.

Cultural Marxism's Origins: How the Disciples of an Obscure Italian Linguist Subverted America

You may have heard the terms “Cultural Marxism,” “Critical Theory” or “Frankfurt School” bandied about. And while you might have an intuitive approximation of what these terms mean for America in the 21st century, there’s a good chance that you don’t know much about the deep theory, where the ideology comes from and what it has planned for America – and the world.

The underlying theory here is a variant of Marxism, pioneered by early-20th-century Italian Marxist politician and linguist Antonio Gramsci. Gramscian Marxism is a radical departure from Classical Marxism. One does not need to endorse the Classical Marxism of Marx, Engels and others to appreciate the significant differences between the two. He is easily the most influential thinker that you have never heard of.

Whereas Classical Marxism located what has been called “the revolutionary subject” (the people who will overthrow capitalism and usher in socialism) within the broad working class, primarily in what is now the First World, Gramscism takes a very different approach. This approach underpins most of the social unrest that is gripping America and the West today. In a sense, we are living through the endgame of a Gramscian revolution.

There are two important diversions that Gramscism has from more traditional Marxist thought: First, that economics was the base of culture and politics. Second, philosophical materialism in the Marxist sense where reality is effectively formed by the means of economic production.

For Gramsci, culture was more important than either economics or politics. This was what needed to be changed for there to be a revolution. As such, the weapon to be used for revolution was not the economic might of an organized working class, but a “long march through the institutions” (a phrase actually coined by German Marxist Rudi Dutschke), whereby every institution in the West would be subverted through penetration and infiltration.

Throughout this article, we will use the term “Cultural Marxism” as a catchall to refer to this phenomenon, because it is the most all-encompassing and does not limit us to discussing any one specific variation (Gramsci, the Frankfurt School or what have you). Finally, we should briefly mention that, the claims of Dr. Jordan Peterson notwithstanding, Cultural Marxism is ideologically distinct from postmodernism and deconstruction, both of which are hostile toward Marxism. We will not touch on either postmodernism or deconstruction in this article, though they certainly have been influential on the international left.

Far from being a neutral form of analysis, Cultural Marxism starts with the assumption that every aspect of Western civilization is some kind of a conspiracy (conscious or otherwise) to keep a certain group of people in their place. This creates what Victor Davis Hansen has called a “subjective righteousness.” There is no place for individual responsibility for good or for ill. Rather, there is only the analysis of power. Those who are judged to have it, by the priests of Wokeness (effectively a Cultural Marxist framework), can do no right. Those who attack them can do no wrong.

Eternal truths, no matter how self-evident, are not truths at all, but narratives constructed by a ruling elite to perpetuate their own rule. Absolutely nothing is to be spared from the ruthless line of Cultural Marxism and Critical Theory. This leads to an inversion of traditional values, where the values that have served Western civilization for thousands of years are painted as negative features. The male desire to protect women from danger becomes “patriarchy” and “paternalism.” The drive to attain mastery over the self and the environment that almost entirely defines Western culture is repainted as “authoritarian personality.” The normal desire for marriage and children becomes “heteronormativity,” just one option among many and a bad one at that. An appreciation for the philosophical and cultural achievements of Western civilization is “white supremacy,” an arbitrary system with no goal other than to keep other races down.

There is also this process identified by a semi-famous KGB agent, Yuri Bezmenov:

Demoralization: This is whereby people are made to lose faith in their own culture and their institutions. Society is made to be something that isn’t worth fighting for.

Destabilization: During this phase, the culture and society itself are made unstable. A situation is created whereby “anything can happen” and people simply cannot rely upon things to be the same from one day to the next.

Crisis: The manufacturing of a large crisis about which “something must be done.”

Normalization: The “new normal.” The new way of doing things is normalized through constant propaganda that this is “just how the world is now.”

All of these ideas are likely familiar to you. That is because, when considered objectively, Cultural Marxism has been a resounding success in the Western world.

Is Cultural Marxism a Real Threat?

Cultural Marxism's Origins: How the Disciples of an Obscure Italian Linguist Subverted AmericaOne of the common responses among the left, particularly those on the center-left, is that Cultural Marxism isn’t a real thing or, at the very least, that it has failed to influence culture in any meaningful sense. It’s important to point out that it isn’t necessary to prove the existence of Cultural Marxist foot soldiers self-consciously infiltrating our institutions to show that Cultural Marxism has influenced American culture and Western culture more broadly. It is simply necessary to look at what their aims are and to see if those aims have been met.

The radical transformation of society over the last 60 years and the acceleration of this transformation can be attributed to a number of factors, including Cultural Marxism, neoliberalism, the destruction of civil society and the welfare state. It’s worth pointing out the degree to which Cultural Marxism has influenced public discourse in the country and, indeed, the broader West. In Western Europe, for example, Cultural Marxist dialogue is much more explicit and overt than it is in the United States.

To see the influence of Cultural Marxism, one need look no further than any left online publication. But it’s worth identifying the importance of Cultural Marxism in Western universities. The ideas of Cultural Marxism are hardly the purview of economic, political and cultural elites. Indeed, they are pushed on just about any college student from the community college level all the way up to the Ivy League. What’s more, there is a strand of Cultural Marxism called critical pedagogy that is all about introducing these concepts to younger and younger children.

Cultural Marxism can be seen in the rise of grievance studies, those areas of “study” which are little more than political parties within the university. This includes ersatz academic disciplines such as women’s studies, African-American studies, “queer studies,” and even whiteness studies – the last of which, unlike the studies that precede it, is about pillorying and villainizing whites rather than a sort of narcissistic view at their own history. The degrees granted by these disciplines are, of course, totally useless, leading to a mass of young people who are woefully unprepared to enter the job market while simultaneously saddled with massive amounts of debt. Such people are naturally easy pickings for leftist movements seeking to destroy society.

Analysis Mass surveillance programs run by the UK, French and Belgian governments are illegal, Europe’s top court has decided in a huge win for privacy advocates.

The European Court of Justice (CJEU) announced on Tuesday that legislation passed by all three countries that allows the government to demand traffic and location data from internet and mobile providers in "a general or indiscriminate way" breaks EU data privacy laws - even when national security concerns are invoked.

“The directive does not authorise the Member States to adopt, inter alia for the purposes of national security, legislative measures intended to restrict the scope of rights and obligations provided for in that directive, in particular the obligation to ensure the confidentiality of communications and traffic data, unless such measures comply with the general principles of EU law, including the principle of proportionality, and the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Charter,” the court decided.

In layman’s terms that means that a government can’t build a massive database of what everyone does and then query it later while investigating a case. Instead, they will need to carry out targeted surveillance and data retention - identifying specific people or accounts or phone numbers - and have a court review those requests to make sure they are not overly broad.

The ruling is significant because it directly addresses the issue of national security - something that has been used for years to bypass existing personal data protection legislation - and states categorically that EU privacy laws still apply in such circumstances, almost always.

The decision includes a specific carve-out when it comes to national security, noting that “in situations where a Member State is facing a serious threat to national security that proves to be genuine and present or foreseeable, that Member State may derogate from the obligation to ensure the confidentiality of data relating to electronic communications by requiring, by way of legislative measures, the general and indiscriminate retention of that data for a period that is limited in time to what is strictly necessary, but which may be extended if the threat persists.”

In other words mass data collection should be short term and public - legislation has to be considered and passed - and only conducted for a limited period.

Children can’t fully understand the lifelong repercussions of taking hormone blockers at an early age and thus can’t consent to the treatment, the lawyer for two women suing the UK’s only NHS-run youth gender clinic has claimed.

Transitioning youth who take hormone blockers have a “very high likelihood” of moving on to cross-sex hormones, which can cause “irreversible changes” such as “loss of fertility and sexual function, and decreased bone density,” Jeremy Hyam QC told the High Court on Wednesday, arguing that young people who begin the treatment are incapable of fully understanding the permanent damage they are doing to their bodies and thus cannot truly give “informed consent.”

Hyam represents two women who are suing the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), the UK’s only NHS gender clinic specifically for children, to ban the prescription of hormone blockers to youth without a court order affirming the treatment is in their “best interests.” The treatment “does not have any adequate base to support it,” and the effect of the blockers “on the intensity, duration, and outcome of adolescent development is largely unknown,” he said during the hearing.

The claimants are Keira Bell, a 23-year-old woman who began taking hormones at 16 to transition to male and started de-transitioning last year, and ‘Mrs A’, the mother of an autistic 16-year-old whose daughter is currently on the GIDS waiting list. Bell now regrets her “brash” [sic] decision to start on puberty blockers, describing it as a misguided attempt to “find confidence and happiness” that may have permanently cost her a chance at motherhood.

Bell began attending the clinic at 14, where she was seen by clinicians just five times before being prescribed puberty blockers. A year later, she began taking testosterone shots – and by the time she realized she was on the wrong path, she had already had her breasts removed.

“I should have been challenged on the proposals or the claims that I was making for myself,” she told the BBC back in March, when a judge first allowed the case to move forward, explaining that she felt incapable of turning back once the clinic visits began, as “one step led to another.”

Bell and Mrs A are concerned by the steep rise in the number of children sent to GIDS. Across England and Wales, 2,700 young people, mostly girls, were referred to the clinic last year, more than 20 times the number seen 10 years ago. Some were as young as 10, and at least a dozen were under 13.

It's not exactly clear what the lawyers of bankrupt Hertz were thinking but the first time the company spent a whopping $16.2 million on corporate retention bonuses just one day after it announced it would lay off 10,000 US workers and just days after it filed for Chapter 11, it made front page news.

Perhaps they were simply hoping that the bankruptcy judge overseeing the Chapter 11 case has a short memory or is senile, but whatever the reason when they requested that the management team of Hertz - which landed the iconic company into bankruptcy court for the first time in its 102 year history - be paid another $5.2 million in incentive-linked bonuses, the judge had had enough.

As we reported on Sept 18, Judge Mary Walrath slammed the application for another bonus program, saying it comes too soon - less than 4 months to be exact - after the $16.2 million in retention money Hertz agreed to hand out to about 340 employees just days before it filed for bankruptcy in May. Walrath’s order also denied a new plan that would have split as much as $9.2 million among about 295 lower-ranking managers.

"It seems offensive to give senior executives bonuses" when some of them got retention payments immediately before Hertz headed for court, Walrath said. Under the pre-bankruptcy retention plan, CEO Paul Stone received $700,000. With the new plan, Stone could have collected as much as $1.6 million.

"More has to be done to show why employees who got retention bonuses and agreed to stay with the company are not going to do their best to see that the company survives and succeeds," Walrath said in mid-September for the benefit of greedy but incompetent management teams everywhere.

According to Bloomberg, as part of the original deal, employees agreed to forgo their 2020 bonuses. The new bonuses "are in reality the 2020 bonuses under a different name," the U.S. Trustee has said.

Ironically, White & Case was hoping that this bait & switch would pass by unnoticed, and as Hertz bankruptcy attorney Jason Zakia said during the hearing, a "relatively large percentage" of the employees who would be eligible for the new bonus program also got retention bonuses. In short: reward management for destroying billions in shareholder value… and then reward them some more.

Fast forward to today when following the angry response by Judge Walrath, Hertz quietly dropped its plan to hand out executive incentive bonuses for 2020. Instead, Bloomberg reports, Hertz will push forward with a general incentive plan for lower-ranking employees to motivate them while the company crafts a turnaround plan, the car renter said in a court filing Wednesday.

And so, 4 months after an angry response by the broader public scuttled Hertz's "innovative" plan to fund its DIP loan by selling bankrupt stock to millions of underage Robinhood traders, the company has been shut down for the second time, this time in its attempt to reward management with millions in bonuses for bankrupting the most iconic US auto rental company.

After all, Kaepernick writes, "The central intent of policing is to surveil, terrorize, capture, and kill marginalized populations, specifically Black folks."

As for prisons, they only exist to "isolate, regulate, and surveil" black and brown people.

"Prisons do not disappear problems, they disappear human beings," he says, borrowing from writer Angela Davis.

Sure enough, only once society rids itself of these terroristic morally corrupt systems, will it be "safer, healthier, and truly free."

It should be noted that found nowhere in the essays so far is any explanation of how exactly a little utopia-destroying thing called crime will be monitored and controlled. Kaepernick and his fellow writers seem to believe that crime and criminals will simply vanish when police and prison systems are dismantled.

The Cult of Covidism Has Invaded the Church

What should have been a purely scientific response aimed at control and cure of a disease quickly evolved into the political-religious cult of Covidism. Objective scientific analysis of and responses to what is the contagious pathogen COVID-19 were almost immediately suffocated by a plethora of arbitrary pseudo-religious rituals.

The capitulation of the churches to rituals radically modifying and even antagonistic to Christian rites may be because the Church, continually rent by internal crises and scandals, did not recognize the rival religion when it appeared.

It may be that the budding religious cult prevailed rapidly because Covidism was purported to be based on science. But it is actually an offshoot of the religion of scientism, which elevates speculative metaphysics and mystery rituals on the basis of scientific-sounding but untested suppositions.

The result of the surprise appearance of Covidism has been that core doctrines of the Christian Church — Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant — have been severely compromised or even replaced by the enforcement of COVID-19 ritual cleansings coupled with liturgies and doctrines of the radical left.

Without much resistance or thought, most institutions, including the American Church, voluntarily capitulated to the cult's ritualistic regulatory minutiae.

The result is that in America, the land of the free, the land whose constitution guarantees freedom of religion and speech, the hollowness of much of the American Church has been revealed. With few exceptions, the leaders of the institution that claims allegiance to the Lion of Judah barely mewed, much less roared. Leaders of denominations that once defended the infallibility of the Bible as the Word of God began to take Bibles out of the pew racks out of fear that touching the book would infect the body of Christ.

As hand-sanitizer replaced holy water as a symbolic means of purifying potentially diseased worshippers, the sacrament of the Lord's Supper was sidelined or trivialized to the point of meaninglessness. Accession to fear of the god Invisible Virus found the sacrament discarded voluntarily — or, as has been the case in San Francisco, forbidden.

In many churches, the belief that the sacrament was essential to spiritual health was weakened or jettisoned altogether. Communion became a ritual radically changed by state laws regarding sanitization. Takeout communion was substituted, with the body and blood of Christ packaged much as fast food restaurants dispense ketchup. Revelatory of churches' capitulation to Prohibition, individual packets containing a crumb of unleavened bread also dispensed Concord grape juice rather than wine.

Mr Elcoate said he doesn't have expertise in aircraft structures so he decided to share the photos with the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Facebook group 'to see if anyone could ID it'.

'That's when several people started contacting me,' he said.

Mr Elcoate was encouraged to contact Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which he did. He shared pictures of the debris with the federal agency on Tuesday.

MH370, a Malaysia Airlines plane, vanished from radar screens carrying 239 people, including six Australians, en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March 2014.

However, it's unlikely the remains unearthed on Monday belong to the missing Boeing 777 - as a part of a wing was found on Reunion Island, east of Madagascar, in 2015, which is more than 10,000km away.

Command master chief arrested and relieved

A Florida-based U.S. Navy command master chief was relieved from his leadership position at Naval Ordnance Test Unit last month, according to officials.

Master Chief Tracy F. Kuchta was relieved Sept. 19 “due to a loss of confidence in Kuchta’s ability to perform the duties of a command senior enlisted advisor,” the Cape Canaveral-based unit’s spokeswoman, April Crew-Kelly, said in an email.

While Navy officials did not provide specifics regarding Kuchta’s relief, it followed his arrest by Brevard County Sheriff’s deputies on Sept. 18 after Kuchta was accused of assaulting another man before he resisted arrest and was tased, according to law enforcement records.

Reached by phone Monday, Kuchta, 41, disputed law enforcement’s description of what happened on the evening of Sept. 18 in a Rockledge neighborhood and said he was only defending himself.

Kuchta faces misdemeanor charges of property theft and resisting arrest without violence, according to court records.

He also faced a misdemeanor battery charge and a felony robbery charge, but prosecutors withdrew those last week, court records show.

Sheriff’s office officials did not return calls this week seeking more information about the encounter.

Officials with Florida’s 18th Judicial Circuit, which covers Brevard County, also declined to comment on the case.

But circuit spokesman Todd Brown said that, in general, “every complaint that our office receives undergoes a careful and thorough review by experienced prosecutors to determine if they reasonably believe the alleged crimes can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt at trial."

Los Angeles — Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart Area are investigating an apparent hate crime which occurred in MacArthur Park.

On October 4, 2020, around 9:00 p.m., a transgender woman, Daniela Hernandez, was in MacArthur Park when she was approached by a group of three Hispanic suspects, two males and one female, 18-25 years of age. Police say one of the suspects stated, “We don’t want gays here!” The suspects surrounded the victim and proceeded to stab her multiple times, slashing her neck. The suspects fled the area in a white Honda sedan. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Detectives are actively working this investigation and canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence. Due to the statement made to the victim, this is being investigated as a hate crime.

Soldiers Won't Have to Pass Army Combat Fitness Test to Graduate Initial Training

The Army has suspended a rule requiring new enlisted soldiers and officers to pass the Army Combat Fitness Test to graduate initial military training through next year.

Army officials announced in June that all active-duty, National Guard and Reserve units would be cleared to take a lightly modified ACFT on Oct. 1, but their scores will be used for data collection only and will not count until 2022.

That policy also now applies to soldiers in Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, One Station Unit Training, the Warrant Officer Basic Course and the Basic Officer Leaders Course for fiscal 2021, Megan Reed, spokeswoman for the Army's Center for Initial Military Training, said in a written statement.

"The Army Combat Fitness Test will no longer be used as a graduation requirement in Initial Military Training," Reed said. "All soldiers are challenged to pass ACFT 2.0 … however, no adverse administrative actions will be taken against a soldier for failing the ACFT and scores or comments on performance will not be used administratively during the data collection timeframe."

After the ACFT's rollout in 2018, the service had planned for all soldiers to begin taking it to replace the Army Physical Fitness Test as the test of record in October 2020. New soldiers began taking the ACFT as a graduation requirement for initial military training in October 2019.

But the COVID-19 outbreak forced Army leaders to pause all fitness testing in late March to prevent the spread of the virus, a move that also paused the ACFT graduation requirement for new soldiers.

The pandemic also caused delays in fielding units with the special equipment needed to conduct the ACFT. Soldiers were unable to practice the entire test and build fitness levels, prompting Army leaders to announce in June that individual ACFT scores will not count against soldiers until March 2022.

As of Oct. 1, unit commanders were authorized to administer a slightly modified version of the new fitness test – known as the ACFT 2.0. It still consists of six events: the maximum deadlift; standing power throw; hand-release push-ups; spring, drag and carry; leg tuck; and two-mile run. But the Army has added an alternative plank event for soldiers who struggle to perform the minimum requirement of one leg tuck.

The plank event which requires soldiers to perform the exercise for a minimum of two minutes is intended as a temporary bridging exercise to build core strength, Army officials have said.

New Jersey Mail Carrier Arrested and Charged For Dumping Mail, Including 99 Election Ballots

A New Jersey mail carrier was arrested and charged for dumping mail, including election ballots, the US Attorney’s office in the District of New Jersey announced Wednesday.

Nicholas Beauchene, 26, was charged with one count of mail obstruction and one count of delay, secretion, or detention of mail.

The US Attorney’s Office said the mail is now back in the mail stream and will be delivered.

A U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier from Hudson County was arrested today for discarding mail, including 99 general election ballots sent from the County Board of Elections and intended to be delivered to West Orange residents, from his assigned routes in Orange and West Orange, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Nicholas Beauchene, 26, of Kearny, New Jersey, is charged by complaint with one count of delay, secretion, or detention of mail and one count of obstruction of mail. He is scheduled to appear this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy L. Waldor in Newark federal court.

According to documents filed in the case, Beauchene dumped 1,875 pieces of mail, including election ballots sent to West Orange residents:

Approximately 1,875 pieces of mail – including 627 pieces of first class, 873 pieces of standard class, two pieces of certified mail, 99 general election ballots destined for residents in West Orange, and 276 campaign flyers from local candidates for West Orange Town Council and Board of Education – were recovered from dumpsters in North Arlington and West Orange on Oct. 2, 2020, and Oct. 5, 2020. The mail had been scheduled to be delivered on Sept. 28, Oct. 1, and Oct. 2, 2020, to addresses on certain postal routes in Orange and West Orange. On the delivery dates for which mail was recovered, Beauchene was the only mail carrier assigned to deliver mail to the addresses on the recovered mail.

Beauchene faces up to 5 1/2 years in prison and up to $230,000 in fines.

Earlier this week, Virginia election officials put out a statement warning the public that ballots may have been stolen when 6 mailboxes were broken into over the weekend.

Last week, Clare Bronfman’s attorney, Ronald Sullivan, Jr., filed a letter asking Judge Nicholas Garaufis to recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that Clare be assigned to the minimum security camp at the federal prison complex in Danbury, Connecticut or to another similar camp and to release her $100 million bail bond.

The judge agreed to both.

His order reads:

It sounds promising for the heiress and she may well wind up in the minimum security women’s camp in Danbury with an estimated 78 other women.

However, the judge does not have the final say on where Clare is placed. That’s up to the Bureau of Prisons [BOP], which is a division of the United States Department of Justice, the same department that prosecuted Bronfman.

It might be argued that if the judge really wanted Clare to be placed in the Danbury camp, he would have specifically asked prosecutors in the Bronfman case to contact the BOP about Clare’s placement.

According to the Albany Times Union, the Danbury camp has “dormitory housing, relatively low staff-to-inmate ratios and limited or no perimeter fencing, according to the prisons bureau. The prison camp at Danbury has over the years offered a baseball field, volleyball net and walking track.”

[The volleyball might seem a little like home for Clare, who used to watch Keith Raniere play volleyball on Friday nights along with many of his other female devotees.]

Cayman Islands Removed From EU Tax Haven Blacklist

Despite its status as one of the world’s most secretive and low tax jurisdictions, the European Council announced on Tuesday that it has delisted the Cayman Islands from the EU’s list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes – informally known as its tax haven blacklist.

This decision added fuel to the fire for critics who have argued that the criteria for listing is flawed, arbitrary, and perhaps even politically motivated.

“This is an extraordinary decision, and hard to know whether it's testament to the lobbying efforts of the world's worst financial secrecy jurisdiction, Cayman, or the sheer methodological ineptitude of the EU blacklist,” Alex Cobham, Chief Executive of the Tax Justice Network wrote on his Twitter account.

His organization’s Financial Secrecy Index, which ranks jurisdictions according to their secrecy and scale of offshore financial activities, lists the British overseas territory as the world’s worst tax haven. It also determined it to be the third greatest enabler of corporate tax avoidance behind only the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda, according to its Corporate Tax Haven Index.

According to Tuesday’s European Council press release, the Cayman Islands was delisted “after it adopted new reforms to its framework on Collective Investment Funds in September 2020.”

It was one of two jurisdictions, along with Oman, to be removed from the EU list, which was first established in December 2017, and is updated twice a year.

Cayman’s Premier, Alden McLaughlin, welcomed the decision, saying that his government remains committed to good governance standards on this issue, and that he “will continue collaborating with the EU, including through broadening our dialogue to topics of mutual interest.”

As reported by the BBC, the islands became the first U.K. territory to be added to the blacklist in February of this year. Upon receiving the news, its government released a statement saying that it was already in discussions with EU officials to be delisted as soon as possible.

Oxfam, an international NGO, found the news of the Cayman’s blacklisting to be “encouraging” at the time, but stated that there were many other tax havens that should have been included.

In response to this development, Chiara Putaturo, Oxfam’s EU Tax Policy Advisor, said that “removing the Cayman Islands, one of the world’s most notorious tax havens, from the EU tax haven blacklist is further proof that the process isn’t working.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton and Steven Spielberg's women's voting drama The Woman's Hour officially has a home.

Following more than a year of deal-making, the drama based on the book The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote has landed at The CW. The network, a joint venture between CBS TV Studios and Warner Bros. TV, has optioned to adapt the drama as a seasonal anthology. The project marks Clinton's debut as an exec producer on a scripted series.

The first season of the drama will be based on author Elaine Weiss' book and follow the battle to ratify the 19th amendment. Each season will celebrate those who changed history and have strong contemporary reverberations in a bid for the series to appeal to today's rising tide of young and politically active audiences.

While still in development, sources note that the drama landed at The CW more than a year ago after Spielberg's Amblin in August 2018 optioned Weiss' book and shopped the project to premium cable and streaming outlets. Clinton, sources say, was involved in the pitch meetings and helped to select writer Angelina Burnett (Halt and Catch Fire) to adapt the novel. Clinton is expected to continue to be closely involved in the series, offering input on decisions including casting and directing.

As The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported at the time, as Weiss was writing the book, she was struck by the parallels between the women's suffrage movement and the 2016 presidential election between Clinton and Donald Trump. It then became a priority for the author and journalist — whose work has appeared in multiple publications and on NPR — to get her book in Clinton's hands. Eventually, she met a bookstore owner who delivered The Woman's Hour to Clinton. The latter, sources say, loved the contemporary and relevant issues the book tackled and felt it would be an important story to tell on TV while also creating strong roles for women. Clinton called her attorney, Robert Barnett at Williams Connolly, and eventually met and hit it off with Weiss before calling frequent supporter Spielberg, who brought in Amblin TV.

At the time, Amblin had planned to adapt the novel as either a TV movie or limited series. The book offers a plethora of additional source material for subsequent seasons as it follows the activists who led the decades-long fight to grant women the right to vote and sheds light on how close the battle to ratify the 19th Amendment really was. The book celebrates those who changed history and laid the foundation for the civil rights movement that came decades later. (The 19th amendment marked its 100th anniversary this past August.)

"[E]verything takes a lot longer than you think it will. That's one thing I've definitely learned," Clinton told THR of the learning process that came with shopping The Woman's Hour.

Clinton, Weiss, Amblin's Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will all exec produce alongside Burnett. Burnett, for her part, previously worked with Amblin TV on FX's critical hit The Americans and counts Genius, Hannibal and Boss among her credits. After volunteering as an organizer during the 2008 primary election, Burnett was hired to run the Nevada Border State program for the 2008 general election. She has been organizing ever since. She's repped by Manage-ment and Gang Tyre.

For Clinton, The Woman's Hour represents her latest TV foray. The former secretary of state also teamed with Hulu for Hillary, a four-part docuseries featuring interviews with the former presidential candidate and dozens of her friends, colleagues, journalists and family members. Hulu is also developing Rodham, Curtis Sittenfeld's best-selling novel that explores a world in which the former first lady never married Bill Clinton. (HRC is not attached.)
