Rising COVID cases take Europe and US off the travel list for next year

Australians should take Europe and the United States off their travel list for the whole of next year if there is no coronavirus vaccine, with Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham declaring the Morrison government's priority was to establish travel bubbles with "other low-risk nations".

Many European countries experienced huge spikes in new COVID-19 cases last week, making it less likely the continent will get a handle on the global pandemic as it heads into winter.

But Senator Birmingham revealed Australians could be travelling to New Zealand by the end of the year, which will then be used as a blueprint to open up to other countries in Asia and the Pacific.

Asked whether Australians would be able to travel to the rest of the world at any point next year, Senator Birmingham said the government wanted to reopen travel in and out of the country but "it can't be done at the expense of our health and economic strength at home".

"We are beginning to open up to New Zealand because of their similarly strong COVID outcomes and it may be possible to do likewise with other low risk nations," he said.

"However, the prospects of opening up widespread travel with higher risk countries will remain very reliant on effective vaccination or other major breakthroughs in the management of COVID."

With New South Wales and the Northern Territory to begin accepting New Zealand arrivals from October 16, Senator Birmingham confirmed the plan was to establish two-way travel with that country before the end of 2020.

"Work continues on how we can facilitate two-way COVID-safe travel between Australia and New Zealand, and I hope that we can see a reciprocal arrangement of quarantine-free travel with New Zealand by the year's end," Senator Birmingham said.

"Our arrangement with New Zealand will provide a blueprint to prove up the model of how we run safe corridors – green lanes of international visitors coming in and out of Australia - and whether this can be extended to other similarly low risk countries down the track.

"We will also work with health experts on how the rollout of any vaccine will facilitate further international travel."

A decision by New Zealand on whether to open up and allow quarantine-free travel from Australia will likely be made after the October 17 national election.

To participate in the New Zealand travel bubble, Victoria would have to prove it doesn't meet the federal government's definition of a "hot spot": a three-day rolling average of three locally acquired cases, per day, over three days.

Been digging on some recent chatter relating to the use of the nasal swap testing protocol, and the heavy research thats been going on for over 10 years now towards nasal delivery of nanoparticle and mRNA type vaccines in order to bypass the blood brain barrier.

Apart from the obvious about masks being pointless, I think it's been commonly regarded that if an virus is apparently airborne and mask mandates are enforced that the use of deep nasal swabbing for testing has a clear objective that is not about the test, when a saliva test should obtain the same results if the whole 'droplet' and airborne aspect was accurate.

Upon quick searches for 'nasal delivery vaccination' there is an abundance of info and research that has been going on well before this sh1t show kicked off. If i was a betting man, i'd say unfortunately a huge number of people globally have already been mass 'vaccinated' and in a year or two we're going to start seeing the fall out.

A treasured anti-Trump meme since the pandemic began begins with the notion that European reaction to the coronavirus was far better than America’s. If only we had done it the way they did it in Germany/France/Netherlands we would have saved thousands of lives.

It’s true, Europe’s response was far more draconian than the response in the U.S. Their lockdowns were more severe. Restrictions on movement were enforced. You couldn’t go outside your home in France unless you were going to the grocery store or the pharmacy.

As the lockdowns lifted, Europeans celebrated and pitied us poor Americans for not getting it.

Now, the coronavirus is back with a vengeance and Europe isn’t ready for it.

Epidemiologists and residents alike are pointing the finger at governments for having failed to seize on the summertime lull in cases to prepare adequately for the expected autumn onslaught, with testing and ICU staffing still critically short. In Rome this week, people waited in line for 8-10 hours to get tested, while front-line medics from Kiev to Paris found themselves once again pulling long, short-staffed shifts in overcrowded wards.

“When the state of alarm was abandoned, it was time to invest in prevention, but that hasn’t been done,” lamented Margarita del Val, viral immunology expert with the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Center, part of Spain’s top research body, CSIC.

“We are in the fall wave without having resolved the summer wave,” she told an online forum this week.

France, Italy, and Spain — three of the hardest-hit countries when the virus first came ashore in Europe — are reimposing lockdowns as the contagion spreads. In Central and Eastern Europe, the ICUs are filling up and they’re getting more infections now than they did at the height of the spread of the virus.

What went wrong:

“We were closed for six months, the restaurants didn’t work and yet the number of cases still rose,” said Moaghin Marius Ciprian, owner of the popular Grivita Pub n Grill who took part in the protest. “I’m not a specialist but I’m not stupid either. But from my point of view it’s not us that have the responsibility for this pandemic.”

As infections rise in many European countries, some — including Belgium, Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain and France — are diagnosing more new cases every day per capita than the United States, according to the seven-day rolling averages of data kept by Johns Hopkins University. On Friday, France, with a population of about 70 million, reported a record 20,300 new infections.

While politicians and the media debate the severity and necessity of lockdowns, some nations have avoided all that and are flourishing.

Yet another one of the conspirators indicted in the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has turned out to be an anarchist and this time is an identified Black Lives Matter, Inc.™ supporter.

If you’re keeping book, that now means at least three of the six men indicted by the federal government for the frightening conspiracy to kidnap the governor from her vacation home are avowed anti-Donald Trump anarchists and at least one is a BLM protester. When half the conspirators rolled up by the feds are anarchists, this is what you might call a pattern.

The BLM connection comes from no less than The Washington Post, which buried the lede of its own story by headlining its piece, “Accused leader of plot to kidnap Michigan governor was struggling financially, living in basement storage space,” as if living in a basement was the most surprising thing about the conspirator. Indeed, we can be assured that if one of the conspirators had attended a Trump rally that would have headlined the story.

One of alleged plotters, 23-year-old Daniel Harris, attended a Black Lives Matter protest in June, telling the Oakland County Times he was upset about the killing of George Floyd and police violence.

Parker Douglas, a lawyer for Harris, said his client was a former Marine who lived at home with his parents and did construction work. Douglas said Harris told him some things described in the FBI affidavit were taken out of context while others he “thinks just didn’t happen.” Douglas said his client believes “not everybody mentioned in this knew everything that is described in this complaint.” He said his client, in a brief meeting, had suggested he had voted for candidates from both parties, had not expressed a view on President Trump and seemed to favor small government. [Emphasis added]

Being upset with police and government overreach isn’t exclusive to one political party, as the conspirators’ affiliations show. Sometimes the sides come together as in the case when anarchists gave a momentary sympathetic ear to the defendants in the Bundy Ranch case. Conspirators were upset over Whitmer’s draconian COVID-19 lockdowns and her hypocrisy of ordering people to stay home when her family seemed to defy her own orders. Leftists all over the country have defied lockdown orders to congregate en masse and riot. Conservatives, Jews, and Christians have held protests to counter the lockdowns preventing them from going to their places of worship and peaceably assembling. Both sides don’t appreciate tyranny, it turns out.

The Post reported that the other seven defendants brought up on state charges wanted to start a civil war.

The plotters, according to an FBI affidavit, were motivated in part by their belief that state governments, including Michigan’s, were violating the U.S. Constitution by imposing restrictions to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus — and they referred to Whitmer as a tyrant. As their anger mounted, they trained together with firearms and experimented with explosives, discussing plans to storm the state capitol building and attack police officers in their homes, authorities said.

The Post tried to insert into its story that the head of the group brought up on federal charges, Adam Fox, was a white supremacist, but offered no tangible support for the allegation except a theoretical, third-hand observation. It certainly could be true considering the mostly white anarchists and antifa rioters, who use the same “anarchist A” symbol as the conspirators, certainly seem to be bigoted. They’re bigoted against white people with views different than their own, and believe black people need white Leftists to speak on their behalf. When politicians say white supremacists are the real problem in America, maybe it’s these people they have in mind.

A shooting in Denver on Saturday afternoon at a “BLM-Antifa Soup Drive” has left a conservative demonstrator dead.

The shooting, which was caught on multiple livestreams and shared on social media, involved a man participating in what was billed as a “Patriot Rally” of conservative Trump supporters. The rally was organized by John Tiegen, a right-wing social media figure. Conservatives carried banners that mocked communism and chanted slogans in support of the police.

Left-wing activists showed up to counter-protest the event with a competing event dubbed the “BLM-Antifa Soup Drive,” but the event quickly turned violent as left-wing activists faced off against conservatives.

Denver Police reported that the right-wing protester allegedly sprayed mace at a Black Lives Matter supporter, who retaliated by fatally shooting him with a handgun. The police arrested two men almost immediately after the shooting occurred, in scenes captured on livestream.

Delaware man charged in Michigan governor kidnap plot was pardoned by Carney last year

Barry Gordon Croft Jr., the 44-year-old Bear man charged in a plot to kidnap the Michigan governor Thursday, was pardoned by Delaware Gov. John Carney last year, according to documents obtained by Delaware Online/The News Journal. The charges for which Croft received a pardon include possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, assault and burglary, according to court records. Carney, a Democrat, signed the pardon in April 2019 after the Delaware Board of Pardons recommended approval. On Friday, Carney confirmed he pardoned Croft for a series of criminal charges that occurred in the mid-1990s. In a written statement issued through a spokesman, Carney called Croft's federal charges "disturbing" and said everyone involved with the kidnapping plot should be "prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." "This is also another warning sign about the growing threat of violence and radicalization in our politics," Carney said. Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, a Democrat who chairs the Board of Pardons, said in a written statement that the board considers several factors when determining whether to recommend a pardon to the governor, "such as the position of the Department of Justice, the nature of the incident(s), the time lapsed from the last conviction, and the impact on employment and housing." "All of those factors were considered with this recommendation," she said. Croft remains in federal custody in Delaware after making an initial appearance Thursday in district court.

Seven members of the Wolverine Watchmen group were charged Thursday in Michigan state court with threat of terrorism for allegedly planning and training for an attack on the Capitol and to kidnap Whitmer. Six others were charged in U.S. District Court with federal conspiracy to commit kidnapping. A sworn affidavit from an FBI agent indicates that Croft was among a group of people "discussing the violent overthrow of certain government and law enforcement components" early this year. Croft and another man, Adam Fox of Michigan, "agreed to unite others in their cause and take violent action against multiple state governments that they believe are violating the U.S. Constitution," according to the affidavit. Members of the group bought weapons, conducted surveillance exercises and held planning meetings in Ohio and Michigan, the criminal complaint says. Their plans were foiled in part because the FBI infiltrated the group with informants. The group planned to kidnap Whitmer and put her on trial for treason, court records state. Details of the process that led to Croft's pardon were not immediately available. Records detailing the exact nature of his crimes were also not immediately available. Court records indicate Croft was arrested multiple times from 1994 to 1996. During that period, he pleaded guilty to several charges including third-degree burglary, attempted theft, receiving stolen property, third-degree conspiracy and third-degree assault, according to court dockets.

''So there you have it. Cambridge Analytica was ‘not involved’ in the 2016 EU referendum. The digital marketing firm that Remainers love to hate did not swing the British electorate towards Leave, as we were constantly told. In the words of the Guardian, no doubt uttered through gritted teeth, Cambridge Analytica did not ‘directly misuse data to influence the Brexit referendum’.

These are the conclusions of the Information Commissioner’s extensive three-year investigation into Cambridge Analytica. Throwing a big bucket of cold water on the chattering-class belief that Cambridge Analytica stealthily and probably illegally harvested people’s online data in order to manipulate our minds and make us vote Leave, the Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said yesterday that, in truth, CA was not a significant player in the referendum, ‘beyond some initial enquiries’.

What’s more, Denham and her office found no evidence to back up one of the key stories about CA – that it colluded with Russia to shift Brits towards Leave. Denham, in her letter to MPs outlining the findings of her investigation, says her staff uncovered no ‘additional evidence’ of Russian involvement in the referendum on the Cambridge Analytica computer servers they pored over.

Oh dear. It is difficult to recall the last time a theory collapsed so spectacularly. All those stories we were told about Cambridge Analytica — that it virtually puppeteered the electorate, that it was the shadowy force behind Brexit, that it cosied up to the Ruskies — have fallen apart. There is no hard evidence for these wild takes about CA.

Indeed, the Information Commissioner’s Office concludes that CA used online data in a fairly standard way. ‘On examination’, it says, CA’s methods were ‘well-recognised processes using commonly available technology’. That was always one of the most striking things about the anti-CA hysteria of the past four years – it struck many of us that this company was only doing what other political campaigns, including Barack Obama’s, had done, in terms of tapping into online data in order to build up potential audiences for political messages.

Are there questions to be asked about the security of our data on social-media sites? Of course. But the idea that CA was doing something uniquely sinister, that its digital marketing was somehow more evil and dastardly than other companies’ digital marketing, just doesn’t stack up. Neither does the idea that it deployed its sinister methods to swing Brits towards Brexit.

It is difficult to overstate how central the puffed-up, fact-lite Cambridge Analytica story was to the Brexit-bashing worldview of certain newspapers and campaigners. The Guardian even has a section on its website called ‘The Cambridge Analytica Files’, listing all the pieces it published on this apparently malevolent, Brexit- orchestrating organisation. CA whistleblowers were fawned over by liberal campaigners and the Twitterati.

The Observer, one of the most enthusiastic promoters of the borderline conspiracy theory that Brexit is the handiwork of nefarious data-mining companies and shady Russian elements, published pieces claiming that a ‘shadowy global operation’ involving CA and others ‘influenced the result of the EU referendum’. Oh really?

There always was a whiff of desperation to the Cambridge Analytica obsession. For some bruised, dazed liberals, horrified by Brexit, the tall tale about CA’s Machiavellian antics became the go-to explanation for why Remain lost the referendum. It couldn’t possibly be that millions of rational Brits, more than capable of thinking for ourselves, decided that it was time to leave the EU. No, something darker must have taken place. We must have been brainwashed. We must have been ‘got at’. Our data and our minds must have been mined by massive companies and possibly even Russian bots, telling us ‘VOTE LEAVE’.

It was a deeply patronising view, depicting the electorate as putty-minded fools and calling into question the legitimacy of the largest act of free and fair democracy in the history of this country. That was always the twisted irony of the CA obsession: the anti-Brexit lobby told us that CA was harming democracy, but in truth it was their own ridiculing of the British electorate and efforts to criminalise the vote for Brexit that threatened to damage democracy in this country.

Flint Councilman Proposes Shutting Down Gas Stations, Liquor Stores At Night To Reduce Crime

After surging violent crime in Flint, Michigan, in the first half of 2020, Flint City Councilman Maurice Davis has had enough with the chaos on the streets. He recently proposed a new ordinance to shutter business operations by 9 p.m. to help reduce crime, reported NBC 25.

Councilman Davis believes forcing liquor stores, corner stores, and gas stations to close by 9 p.m. will help prevent the loitering outside of these establishments, which sometimes result in arguments and or shootings.

If his ordinance is passed, Councilman Davis expects violent crime in the evening and night hours could slump as there would be no need for some to leave their homes when gas stations, liquor stores, and corner stores are closed at night. He said it could give peace and comfort to some in the community who fear leaving their homes at night.

"If they can get an ordinance passed to close down liquor stores, and gas stations at 9 o'clock I wouldn't be mad about it," said Robert Massie Jr., a Flint resident.

Massie hopes the ordinance is passed but believes it could cause some frustration among some.

"It's going to be people that's going to be mad, and then you're going to have some people that's going to like it because they can feel like they can be a little safe out here. But that's not going to stop anything. It'll just calm it down," he explained.

Councilman Davis told ABC 12 that he'd proposed the new ordinance for months now as gun violence kills loved ones in the city.

In 2016, Los Angeles Mayor Gil Garcetti proclaimed, as might an emperor or king, he would empower citizens to “transform their streets and urban corridors into vibrant, walkable spaces that reflect the unique characteristics of their communities.”

As of September 2020, Los Angeles has solved its homeless problem. The approximate 60,000 homeless encamped on Los Angeles’ streets, urban corridors, parks, and freeway underpasses vanished to be replaced by approximately 60,000 unhoused residents. Empowered by Garcetti’s hands-off the homeless order of protection issued for “public health and safety reasons,” these unhoused are reimagining their lives free of health and safety regulations and taxation applicable to the housed.

Enter Hollywood screenwriter W. Peter Iliff (Point Break, Varsity Blues, Trump’s America.)

Iliff is a homeowner and father with that rarest of 21st-century qualities, common sense. Iliff’s cozy Spanish revival home is a short walk from the Cattaraugus underpass of The Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway. Several months ago, hardcore addicts erected a palatial 35-foot by 10-foot hovel that blocked the sidewalk and one traffic lane in the tunnel.

The Christopher Columbus highway bisects Iliff’s neighborhood. Families living on the south side must walk through the underpass to shop along the Robertson Boulevard urban corridor or take their children to Raynier Park, both of which are on the highway’s north side. One homeless man, wielding a lead pipe, chased a father and his four-year-old boy away as he screamed he would crush the father’s skull. Another accosted a terrified young mother walking to the park with her baby in a stroller. They threatened motorists driving through, filched bicycles, and burglarized homes for months as the stench from their fetid encampment grew unbearable.

Iliff steadily received messages from moms and nannies terrified to walk through the tunnel. Iliff repeatedly petitioned the city councilman, Council President Herb Wesson, Jr., and police for help. Garcetti’s order prevented police action. Wesson, who represents a majority black and Latino council district South of the highway, ignored them.

Serendipitously, a homeless outreach group sued Los Angeles in federal court. Tehran hits back at Trump over outburst of profanity: Iranians not intimidated

Iran has hit back at US President Donald Trump after he went on expletive-ridden rant while once again threatening the Islamic Republic.

Speaking during a two-hour phone conversation with conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Friday, Trump said, “Iran knows that, and they’ve been put on notice: If you f— around with us, if you do something bad to us, we are gonna do things to you that have never been done before.”

The profanity was censored on the slightly delayed radio broadcast, but was captured on Limbaugh's livestream and memorialized in a transcript on his website.

Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh responded to Trump, tweeting that the Iranians would not be intimidated and would rather “choose response to US crimes,” including illegal sanctions and the January assassination of top anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani in Iraq.

Trump is no 'tough guy'

The spokesperson for Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations dismissed the US president’s words as electioneering.

"Mr. Trump's attempt to portray himself as a tough guy is unsurprising as the Presidential election in America is fast approaching," Alireza Miryousefi told the American weekly Newsweek.

He also noted that Iran would not back down in the face of Trump’s remarks, nor by his administration decision to double down on sanctions or even actions like General Soleimani’s assassination.

"The US is waging a cruel and illegal economic war, tantamount to economic terrorism, on the people of Iran," Miryousefi said. "The US also cowardly assassinated General Soleimani, a hero in the fight against Daesh and other terrorists, while he was the official guest of the Iraqi government on a peace mission."

"The people of Iran have proven to be resilient and not intimidated by such inappropriate, irresponsible and empty rhetoric," he added.

US-Iran tensions have run particularly high throughout the Trump presidency after he pulled Washington out of a multilateral nuclear deal in 2018 and unleashed a tough campaign of sanctions and military threats against the Islamic Republic.

This is a photo of the man shot in Denver minutes ago just before the shot. I just realized that this is the exact same scenario that happened in the Portland shooting of Jay Bishop. China Blasts Latest US Navy Deployment Near Paracel Islands: "Halt Provocations!"

China again put the United States on notice on Friday, warning the Pentagon to "halt provocations" in the South China Sea.

This after the latest incident involving the US destroyer John McCain sailing near the disputed Paracel Islands administered and militarized by China.

A PLA military spokesperson denounced the sail-by, saying Washington must seek permission to navigate the area. “We demand the US immediately stop such provocative actions, (and) strictly control and restrict military operations in the sea and air,” the spokesperson said.

This constitutes the latest notable incident after last summer there was a major uptick in US military flights over the region, however, during the past month there seems to have been fewer of these provocative sail-throughs.

Prior angry denunciations from Beijing related to American spy aircraft observed in the region, sometimes even shielding any identifying characteristics to appear like civilian aviation, which the PLA has said is dangerous given the possibility of 'mistaken' incidents.

The Chinese military has repeatedly charged that the US Navy has 'frequently' deployed warships in the South China Sea to "show off its force and severely infringe upon China's sovereignty and security interests," according to a quote in The Daily Mail.

The Pentagon response has typically been that it's conducting peaceful 'freedom of navigation' operations to ensure adversaries adhere to international law for open waters.

China has over the past years used both artificial islands as well as expanding military bases on the tiny land masses to extend its maritime claims, butting up against that of American allies in the region like the Philippines or unrecognized Taiwan.

1 dead after shooting near dueling Denver rallies

A suspect is in custody after a deadly shooting in downtown Denver on Saturday as two demonstrations with opposing ideologies were winding down at Civic Center.

The Denver Police Department (DPD) tweeted at 3:49 p.m. that officers were investigating the shooting in the courtyard near the Denver Art Museum.

DPD reported the victim was being transported to the hospital at 3:49 p.m., and said the victim died an hour later.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, DPD said.

Two guns were found on the scene, according to DPD.

DPD originally said that two suspects were in custody, and later found that the second individual was not involved in the incident. DPD said the second individual was a person of interest at the time of their arrest.

A 9NEWS producer and a 9NEWS contractor were taken into custody.

DPD has since said that one of the two people taken into custody was not involved in the incident but was a person of interest at the time. The 9NEWS producer is no longer in police custody and is not a suspect.

A private security guard who was hired by 9NEWS is the suspect detained by DPD. It has been the practice of 9NEWS for a number of months to hire private security to accompany staff at protests.

A "Patriot Rally" was set for 2 p.m. The participants planned to meet earlier Saturday at several locations around the Denver metro area and drive to the park next to the state Capitol.

A counter-protest "BLM-Antifa Soup Drive" was planned to start at 1:30 p.m. at Civic Center to "drown out" the rally.

The Denver Police Department (DPD) said they would not provide specifics on how they were responding to the event and released the following statement:

BLM Marches Down Florida Sidewalks Crowded with Kids

Demonstrators took to the streets in Florida on Saturday marching through sidewalks crowded with children and diners. The protesters chanted “No justice no peace.”

The recent protests have been widely shared on social media following an incident in St. Petersburg, Florida, where protesters surrounded a couple who were dining. Protesters even threatened to punch one of the diners last month.

The protests appear to be a regular sight in St. Petersburg where groups of activists walked down sidewalks apparently filled with diners and children.

Last month, two customers eating at a sidewalk restaurant called Parkshore Grill showed their opposition to the protesters. This led protesters to immediately surrounded the man and threaten him with physical harm in a confrontation that was captured on video by the Tampa Bay Times.

Protestors are now going restaurant by restaurant to chant at diners on Beach Dr. in St. Pete. A lot of diners yelled back, starting multiple confrontations.

The World Health Organization’s special envoy on COVID-19 urged world leaders this week to stop “using lockdowns as your primary control method.”

“We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Dr. David Nabarro said to The Spectator’s Andrew Neil. “The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.”

Nabarro went on to point out several of the negative consequences lockdowns have caused across the world, including devastating tourism industries and increased hunger and poverty.

"Just look at what’s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren’t taking their holidays,” he said. “Look what’s happened to smallholder farmers all over the world. … Look what’s happening to poverty levels. It seems that we may well have a doubling of world poverty by next year. We may well have at least a doubling of child malnutrition.”

Earlier this week, thousands of medical health experts signed their names to a petition calling for the end of coronavirus lockdowns, citing the “irreparable damage” they’ve caused.

"As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists, we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection,” read the petition, known as the Great Barrington Declaration. "Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health."

In the United States, lockdowns have been tied to increased thoughts of suicide from children, a surge in drug overdoses, an uptick in domestic violence, and a study conducted in May concluded that stress and anxiety from lockdowns could destroy seven times the years of life that lockdowns potentially save.

The mention of Cambridge Analytica reminded me of learning a bit more about the extent to which researchers have access to our online behavior and also learning about how they study it.

An article that I still refer to appeared in Scientific American in April 2017 and was written by Walter Quattrochiocchi (pp 60-63). It was called "Inside the Echo Chamber: Computational Social Scientists are Studying How Conspiracy Theories Spread Online- and What, if Anything Can Be Done to Stop Them".

I'd like to offer two quotes that will get anons rolling.

From the first part of the article: "In the summer of 2015 Governor Greg Abbott gave the Texas State Guard an unusual order: keep an eye on the Jade Helm 15 exercise, just in case the online rumors are true. In reality Jade Helm 15 was a routine eight-week military exercise conducted in Texas and six other states. In the online echo chamber, however, it was something more sinister: the beginning of a coup ordered by President Barack Obama."

2. Towards the end Quattrochiocchi gets a bit dismayed the the prospect of the spread of online conspiracy theories. He writes "…for a certain type of user, debunking actually reinforces belief in the conspiracy."

Then he goes on: "We observed the same dynamics in a study of 55 million Facebook users in the U.S. Users avoid cognitive discord by consuming information that supports their preexisting beliefs, and they share that information widely. Moreover, we found that over time people who embrace conspiracy theories in one domain-say the (nonexistent) connection between vaccines and autism-will seek out such theories in other domains. Once inside the echo chamber, they tend to embrace the entire conspiracy corpus."

CNO: More than 190 ships have had COVID-19 cases

More than 190 U.S. Navy ships have suffered a COVID-19 outbreak this year, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday said in a message to the fleet late last month.

If that tally is limited to the sea service’s 296 deployable ships, it would mean nearly 65 percent of the fleet has experienced some level of infection by the novel coronavirus.

Officials did not immediately clarify that point.

At the same time, “aggressive early action” to isolate, quarantine and contact trace has helped contain outbreaks, he added.

Precisely which ships have suffered outbreaks, and the extent of those outbreaks, remains unclear.

Following Pentagon regulations, the sea service stopped reporting COVID cases at local units this spring.

Navy spokeswoman Lt. Emily Wilkin told Navy Times this week that the 190 ships with at least one case onboard were a mix of ships at sea and in port.

“We have not had any [other] outbreaks like USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Kidd,” she said in an email.

TR showcased the harrowing virality of COVID this spring, when an outbreak on the ship eventually infected roughly a quarter of its sailors and forced an emergency diversion to Guam.

Infections onboard the guided-missile destroyer Kidd afflicted at least 78 sailors, which was the last tally provided by the Navy before it stopped releasing updates.

Wilkin pointed to an outbreak onboard the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan earlier this year that was successfully contained, with a handful of COVID-positive sailors flown off and the carrier able to continue operations without any new cases.

The revelation regarding how many ships have suffered COVID infection came about in updated guidance to the fleet sent Sept. 30 by the CNO regarding the novel coronavirus, which had infected 10,585 sailors as of Wednesday.

Officials said Friday that Gilday has tested negative for COVID but continues to self-quarantine at home along with other members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff after the vice commandant of the Coast Guard tested positive earlier this week.

Roughly 35 percent of infected sailors have shown few to no symptoms, and Gilday wrote that “testing is the best way to uncover asymptomatic service members.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s a question Americans are unaccustomed to considering in a presidential election campaign: Could voting, vote-counting or the post-vote reaction become so chaotic that the U.S. military would intervene?

The answer is yes, but only in an extreme case. There is normally no need for the military to play any role in an election. The Constitution keeps the military in a narrow lane — defending the United States from external enemies. Civil order is left largely to civilian police. But there is an obscure law, the Insurrection Act, that theoretically could thrust the active-duty military into a police-like role. And governors have the ability to use the National Guard in state emergencies if needed.

The potential use of troops, either active duty or National Guard, at the polls or in post-election unrest has been discussed by governors and military leaders. The possibilities arise as President Donald Trump asserts without evidence that mail-in balloting will create election fraud and suggests that he might not accept an election loss. Stationing troops at polling places on Election Day — even if just to protect citizens as they vote — raises worries about voter intimidation.

Here are some questions and answers about possible military involvement in the election:

Why wouldn’t the military get involved?

Civilian control of the military is a bedrock principle of American democracy. It means that men and women in uniform answer to civilian leaders like the secretary of defense, and they stay apart from politics. They pledge their loyalty to the Constitution and the nation’s laws, not to a political party or a president.

Gen. Mark Milley, who as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the nation’s top military officer, has told Congress the military is committed to staying apolitical and steering clear of any election role.

As more operators buy into the technology, the latter is finally beginning to happen in some areas. Here’s how the total numbers break down across the world, as of mid-September 2020:

397 operators are investing in 5G mobile or 5G fixed wireless access/home broadband networks

118 operators have announced the deployment of 5G within their live network

Major phone operators and even tech companies are behind accelerating this change, from Vodafone to Verizon—and most recently, Microsoft has entered the playing field.

Large and Diverse Pro-Trump Rally Descends on Beverly Hills

An October 10, 2020, a pro-Trump rally in Beverly Hills, California, was not only large and energetic, but was comprised of people from all walks of life, various races, and even genders.

There were at least two previous pro-Trump rallies in Beverly Hills, the most recent on October 3, 2020. Breitbart News reported that that rally was crashed by BLM and Anitifa, with demonstrators holding signs that read, “NAZI TRUMPS FUCK OFF!” and “DEPORT NAZI SCUM.”

Whitney R., who attended last Saturday’s rally and the one before it, told Breitbart News that today’s was “the largest” rally with the “most diverse turnout.”

Whitney added, “The energy was running high and American pride was everywhere.”
