Sylvan Beach, N.Y. — A woman has died and a Syracuse police officer is in critical condition in what state police said was a possible case of carbon monoxide poisoning aboard a boat in Sylvan Beach.

Blair M. Dodge, 34, of Central Square, and William R. LaShomb, 36, of Bridgeport, were staying overnight Sunday on a boat docked along the Erie Canal when they were stricken with carbon monoxide poisoning, said Trooper Jack Keller, a spokesman for the state police.

When Dodge didn’t show up for work Monday morning, her friends went looking for the couple.

Sylvan Beach firefighters found the couple on the boat, Keller said. State police were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Dodge was pronounced dead on the boat.

LaShomb was found unconscious, but alive. He was rushed to an Oneida hospital before being airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he remains in critical condition.

LaShomb joined the Syracuse Police Department in 2008.

State police are investigating whether the boat’s engine or a portable space heater were the source of the carbon monoxide leak.

Police found no signs of trauma or any suspicious circumstances. The investigation remains ongoing.

A GoFundMe campaign to help Dodge’s family has already raised more than $32,000.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas which can cause sudden illness and death, according the the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The gas is produced any time a fossil fuel is burned.

The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.

Carbon monoxide poisoning ranks fifth in known causes of death among boaters, according to the U.S. Coast Guard’s report on 2017 Recreational Boating Statistics. More than 800 people have been poisoned by boating-related carbon monoxide over a 15-year period, with over 140 of these poisonings resulting in fatalities, according to an earlier CDC report.

Ex-NSA employees criticize Mike Rogers' role with Israeli venture firm

Some former National Security Agency officials have strongly criticized ex-NSA Director Adm. Michael Rogers’ decision to join the advisory board of a venture capital firm that is closely linked with an Israeli intelligence agency.

The company, Team8, announced Rogers’ position last week. Founded by former members of the elite Israeli army intelligence group known as Unit 8200, Team8 researches cybersecurity market demand, raises investments from big tech companies, and creates startups based on those demand signals. It also describes itself as a think tank, and does its own threat research.

Rogers, who headed NSA and U.S. Cyber Command for four years before stepping down this past May, will advise companies in Team8’s portfolio as well as companies under development. The retired admiral will be “instrumental in helping strategize” Team8’s expansion in the United States, the firm said in a statement last week.

Rogers’ decision to join Team8 irked Robert Lee, a former Air Force officer and former NSA employee. It “bothers me on a deep level” when former senior U.S. government officials profit from their experience to “work with foreign intel backed companies,” Lee tweeted.

Mark Hertling, former commanding general of U.S. Army Europe, seconded Lee’s comment by tweeting, “Me too.”

Lee elaborated on his criticism in an exchange with CyberScoop.

“I do not question the ethics and loyalty of military and intelligence professionals that leave after a career of service,” said Lee, founder of cybersecurity company Dragos. “However, there are some that had such a high level of trust bestowed on them by government and civilian partners – and have the ability to impact morale of the entire workforce of the agencies that they worked at – that they must be careful about their post-service career choices.”

PORTLAND, Ore — Police declared a riot in downtown Portland on Sunday night after a large group of demonstrators marched through the South Park Blocks, toppling statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt and breaking windows.

Protesters met under the Burnside Bridge and marched to the South Park Blocks for what they called an “Indigenous Peoples Day of Rage.” A social media post called for an end of colonialism and the abolishment of police.

Around 8:40 p.m., Police tweeted that a "mass gathering" had formed at Southwest Park Avenue and Southwest Madison Street where they were trying to pull down a statue with a chain. Police said anyone involved in "criminal behavior, including vandalism" was subject to arrest.

The statue in that area is of Theodore Roosevelt on horseback. According to the city of Portland's website, "the statue entitled Theodore Roosevelt - Rough Rider portrays the colonel in the actual uniform and accoutrements he wore in his famous ascent of San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War."

OPB reporter Sergio Olmos tweeted that the statue was taken down.

The group also toppled a statue of Abraham Lincoln nearby, according to Olmos.

Protests have been happening consistently in Portland since the killing of George Floyd on Memorial Day. Demonstrators have taken to Portland’s streets for issues that include police brutality, racial inequity, the murder of people of color by police, the abolishment of police and prisons and the defunding of police.

On Saturday night, protesters marched to Portland police’s North Precinct where 26 arrests were made. Independent journalists at the scene said the crowd of marchers was arrested with little to no warning.

Obamacare posturing foreshadows intensity of Amy Coney Barrett confirmation

Schumer wants Barrett to recuse herself from ACA cases, but Dems opposed asking the same of Kagan.

Ahead of the first day of Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearings, the Senate's top Democrat is arguing the nominee should recuse herself from any case related to the Affordable Care Act if she is confirmed — although top Democrats rejected a similar argument made by Republicans during Justice Elena Kagan's confirmation process in 2010.

"Judge Barrett should immediately do the bare minimum and pledge to recuse herself," Schumer said on Sunday, referring to an upcoming Affordable Care Act case, California v. Texas.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in the case in early November. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the plaintiffs are arguing that "the individual mandate requires them to purchase health insurance that they otherwise would not buy."

In the past, Barrett has been linked to some criticism of the Affordable Care Act, including a petition that opposed requiring employers to offer health insurance plans that included access to birth control.

In 2010, during former President Obama's first term, Schumer and other Democrats did not agree with Republicans who wanted Obama Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan to recuse herself from cases related to the Affordable Care Act. Kagan had celebrated the passage of Obamacare in an email while serving as the Obama administration's solicitor general.

"I hear they have the votes, Larry!! Simply amazing," Kagan wrote on the day Obamacare passed the House of Representatives. The email was sent to Laurence Tribe, a Harvard law professor who was working in the Justice Department.

Kagan went on to vote on several cases involving Obamacare, including voting to uphold the law's individual mandate The individual mandate refers to Obamacare's requirement that every American purchase health insurance or face a fine.

Sen. Chris Coons, a Democratic member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called the GOP's effort to fill the Supreme Court vacancy "court packing" on Sunday. He argued that Barrett's views are "extreme" and disqualifying.

"It constitutes court-packing," he said.

The term "court packing" traditionally refers to one party's support for expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court and filling the seats.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Fire investigators looking into what caused a wildfire that killed four people in far Northern California have taken possession of equipment belonging to Pacific Gas and Electric, the utility has reported. PG&E said in a filing Friday with the Public Utilities Commission that investigators with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection seized some of its electrical equipment near where the Zogg Fire started Sept. 27. The fire erupted in Shasta County during high winds and quickly grew, killing four people in the community of Igo, population 600. It later spread to neighboring Tehama County. As of Friday, it had scorched 88 square miles (nearly 228 square kilometers) and destroyed more than 200 buildings, about half of them homes. It was almost fully contained. The utility said it does not have access to the evidence collected by Cal Fire, which has yet to determine a cause for the fire.

PG&E, the nation’s largest utility, recently emerged from bankruptcy stemming from financial fallout from several devastating wildfires caused by its utility equipment that killed more than 100 people and destroyed more than 27,000 homes and other buildings in 2017 and 2018. Customers in the area where the fire started, near Zogg Mine Road and Jenny Bird Lane north of Igo, are served by a 12,000-volt PG&E circuit. On the day the Zogg Fire began, the utility’s automated equipment in the area “reported alarms and other activity between approximately 2:40 p.m. and 3:06 p.m.,” PG&E told regulators. The line was then de-activated. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office identified one of the victims as Alaina Michelle Rowe, 45, who was found dead along a road on Sept. 28. The sheriff’s department said another victim was a minor but did not report the identity. KRCR-TV in Redding reported that Rowe and her eight-year-old daughter Feyla died as they tried to escape the fire.

In June, Pacific Gas & Electric confessed Tuesday to killing 84 people in one of the most devastating wildfires in recent U.S. history during a dramatic court hearing punctuated by a promise from the company’s outgoing CEO that the nation’s largest utility will never again put profits ahead of safety. PG&E CEO Bill Johnson pleaded guilty to 84 felony counts of involuntary manslaughter stemming from a November 2018 wildfire ignited by the utility’s crumbling electrical grid. The blaze nearly wiped out the entire town of Paradise and drove PG&E into bankruptcy early last year.

Coup Plotters Considered Never Allowing Trump To Be Inaugurated

An exclusive report based on a senior Department of Defense official’s account – the coup plotters considered never transferring power to the President-elect of the United States of America. Recent revelations, including the declassification of key documents, have effectively ended any speculation about what really transpired in 2016 and 2017 in regard to Donald Trump and spurious allegations of Russian collusion. The story was a fabrication. None of it was ever true. There really was a conspiracy, and we really did witness the first attempted coup in American history. Information uncovered within the last few days by AND Magazine adds significantly to our understanding of the scope of the conspiracy and suggests strongly that subsequent to the election of Donald Trump there was serious consideration given to simply not transferring power to the President-Elect. According to a former senior Department of Defense official interviewed by AND Magazine, in the wake of Donald Trump’s “surprise” victory in November 2016, a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) was rushed through pushing the false Russian collusion narrative and asserting as the judgment of the Intelligence Community as a whole that the Russians had not only interfered in the election but had done so in order to assist Donald Trump and help him become President. We have known for some time that this NIE was drafted, what we now know is considerably more about the highly unusual way in which it was drafted.

An NIE is supposed to represent the consensus of the Intelligence Community (IC). It is created in a lengthy collaborative process involving working-level analysts and experts. Only when the final version is effectively agreed upon and hammered out, does the document make is way to agency heads for final approval. Such was not the case with this NIE. According to the senior official interviewed, this NIE was written by CIA Director Brennan, FBI Director Comey, and DNI Clapper. All work on the NIE was done at the Top Secret level with only a handful of individuals having access to what was written. Objections to the conclusions reached were dismissed summarily on the basis that Mr. Brennan, Mr. Comey, and Mr. Clapper had personally written the NIE findings and recommendations and would handle all inter-agency input themselves. In short, the conclusions had been preordained. There was no room for discussion.

Circa November 10, 2016, the senior official speaking to AND Magazine received a phone call in his office at the Pentagon on a secure phone. The call was from the Department of Defense Under-Secretary’s office that coordinated attendance and participation in inter-agency meetings at the White House. The call concerned planning for a short fuse, inter-agency meeting at the White House. It was explained that a new committee was being formed to finalize and establish the timeline and storyline connecting Russia with the election of President Trump. The senior official speaking to AND Magazine had been named to be part of this new committee. During this phone call, it was explained to AND’s source that one of the committee’s taskings was to develop a plan to delay and/or reschedule the inauguration. While the official to whom the call was made ultimately deliberately avoided attending committee meetings, he did see subsequent Top Secret email traffic that showed significant inter-agency discussion of the possibility of not proceeding as scheduled with the transfer of power. At some point, this idea appears to have been dropped in favor of proceeding with the strategy of creating an impeachment narrative, but for months apparently there was significant discussion of the possibility of simply not handing over the Presidency to Donald Trump.

Etsy may be cracking down on QAnon merchandise, but Amazon still features an “Amazon’s Choice” Q-emblazoned hat.

Following an announcement by Facebook on Tuesday that it is banning all QAnon-related accounts and groups on Facebook and Instagram, Etsy announced on Wednesday that it is in the process of removing all QAnon merchandise from the platform. Considered a domestic terrorist threat by the FBI, the online pro-Trump conspiracy theory has increasingly come under scrutiny by online platforms. While Twitter and Reddit have also removed QAnon content, related merch such as hats, T-shirts and jewelry can still be found on Ebay and Amazon, including at least one explicitly QAnon item with the Amazon’s Choice designation.

Etsy’s crackdown has cut down on the number of listings of QAnon products, but a wide range of related search terms makes it a challenge to eliminate all of them. As of October 9, the “QAnon” search term brings up no results on Etsy, while on October 7 there were 1,775 results. Nevertheless, the search term “WWG1WGA,” a phrase representing the QAnon slogan, still yields 1,423 results as of October 9, while “The Great Awakening,” another phrase used by members of the group, surfaces 513 listings as of the same date. An Etsy spokesperson confirmed via email that the platform is in the process of removing all the QAnon merch.

“Our seller policies prohibit items that promote hate, incite violence, or promote or endorse harmful misinformation,” said the Etsy spokesperson via email. “In accordance with these policies, we are removing items related to ‘QAnon’ from our marketplace.”

But it’s not just an issue for Etsy. A search for “QAnon hat” on Amazon, for example, brings up seven pages of results, while searches for QAnon flags or shirts result in a similar number of listings. This includes a Q-emblazoned hat selected as “Amazon’s Choice” that features the letter Q, and QAnon-related symbols including a white rabbit and clock. The top QAnon-related keywords do not feature sponsored listings on Amazon, after previous reports of QAnon merch on Amazon have been published. Amazon declined to comment.

On Saturday, China’s simulated attack used drones, special forces and airborne troops in a staged exercise to prepare for an invasion of Taiwan. The horrific exercises, reported by the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, marked the first time in recent years that a state media broadcaster covered all about preparations for an attack on the country. It is the latest act of Beijing aggression in the South China Sea and follows the increased presence of the Chinese Navy in the armed waters.

The simulated attack took place on Taiwanese National Day, with the exercises starting at night.

The CCTV report detailed how Chinese forces entered from multiple locations to demonstrate readiness to invade.

The report added: “The exercise with the effective integration of several new combat forces increased the actual combat capability of the troops in joint landing and three-dimensional attack.”

Beijing has stepped up its military exercises as it regards Taiwan as part of mainland China and wants to reunite the countries by all means.

While China was conducting the exercises, Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen urged Beijing to “engage in meaningful dialogue.”

During the National Day celebrations, she advocated the “rather tense” stalemate in the Taiwan Strait and called on Beijing to find a peaceful solution.

She said, “As long as the Beijing authorities are ready to resolve differences and improve cross-strait relations, while maintaining parity and dignity, we are ready to work together to facilitate meaningful dialogue.”

Previous reports from Taiwan highlighted the tremendous pressure the Chinese Air Force was putting on the country’s finances through the streets. Taiwan spent $ 1.3 billion to use its own warplanes to fight the incursions.

Taiwan also reported on Sunday that Chinese fighters had re-entered the restricted airspace.

The incursion marks the 17th time that China has sent military planes over Taiwan since September 16.

Taiwan’s defense minister said the country spent more than eight percent of its military budget for the year dealing with Chinese overflights.

Su Tzu-yun, an analyst at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, told Business Insider that the repeated overflights were “a kind of attrition and psychological war tactic designed to exhaust Taiwan’s armed forces and reduce public awareness of a possible Chinese attack “.

The Taiwanese drills mark the latest Chinese military exhibition in the South China Sea, and the US begins to intervene.

On Sunday, Beijing crawled up on ships and jets to track down US missile destroyer John S. McCain, which was sailing past China-held islands in the contested waters.

Colonel Zhang Nandong, spokesman for the PLA’s Southern Theater Command, was angry at the “apparent hegemony and military provocation” of the US, which had been “seriously violated.”

The man accused of fatally shooting a protester in Denver was not an employee of the firm that contracted him, the company said. The gunman, who had been hired by a news channel to provide security, lacked proper licensing.

Private security guard, Matthew Dolloff, was contracted through a third-party firm by Pinkerton, but was not an actual employee, the company clarified in a statement, cited by 9NEWS. Pinkerton did not disclose the name of Dolloff’s regular employer. “The agent in question is not a Pinkerton employee. Pinkerton is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities in their investigation of this matter,” the statement says as quoted.

Dolloff, 30, was contracted to protect 9NEWS staff, an NBC-affiliated television station in Denver, Colorado, as the station covered rivaling Black Lives Matter and “Patriot Muster” demonstrations in the city on Saturday. The security guard is accused of shooting and killing US Navy veteran Lee Keltner after a brief altercation with the conservative protester. Dolloff was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder.

The incident sparked theories that Dolloff was affiliated with left-wing groups. However, Denver police later clarified that the suspect “had no affiliation with Antifa.” Still, his presence at the rallies has come under increasing scrutiny. The Denver Department of Excise and Licenses told local media that there was no record that Dolloff was licensed to work as a security guard, meaning that it’s possible he was not legally allowed to carry out the duties he was contracted for. Pinkerton’s claim that Dolloff was not a regular employee could further fuel speculation about his background.

9NEWS issued a statement a day after the shooting, in which the station said it was “deeply saddened by this loss of life” and pledged full cooperation with law enforcement.

Police in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin are speaking out after three consecutive nights of protests and riots in the city. According to police, they responded to “broken windows at businesses and bricks thrown into the windows of homes” on night one.

Stores in Milwaukee were looted, while “rocks, bricks and bottles were thrown at law enforcement officers.”

On night two, police said they rescued several stranded civilians, who were trapped in their vehicles amid the demonstrations. They also responded to an attempted looting in Milwaukee and multiple instances of reckless driving that blocked all lanes of traffic.

Authorities also reported at least one rioter who pointed a gun at a law enforcement officers.

On night three, the situation grew worse. Police stated demonstrators were seen with Molotov cocktails and other fire starting supplies. Guns were also spotted in the crowds.

Meanwhile, more objects were thrown at law enforcement, while vandalism and reckless driving continued in the area.

The unrest initially kicked off on Wednesday in response to the officer involved shooting of 17-year-old Alvin Cole. His mother and two sisters were arrested during Thursday night’s protests.

“I’m very upset, I’m disappointed with the outcome,” stated Tracy Cole. “We need justice, …this state been playing with us too long.”

In a first for Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader apologised for his failure to stand by his people during the pandemic, the Guardian reported on Monday.

Speaking at the 75th birth anniversary of his ruling party, a visibly emotional Kim acknowledged that he did not live up to the trust that North Koreans placed in him, and for that he was “really sorry.” Kim removed his glasses and wiped away tears during the speech, according to the report.

Highlighting the legacy of the “great work” done by his ancestors, Kim was quoted as saying, “Although I am entrusted with the important responsibility to lead this country upholding the cause of the great comrades Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il thanks to the trust of all the people, my efforts and sincerity have not been sufficient enough to rid our people of the difficulties in their lives.”

In his emotive speech, Kim reflected on the challenging times that people around the world are experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic and expressed his desire to improve relations with South Korea. He avoided any direct criticisms at Washington D.C.

On Saturday, North Korea showcased its latest missile, that was larger than any of North Korea’s known intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICMBs), at a huge military parade.

Online marketplace Etsy, famous for its small, independent shops, is removing all QAnon merchandise from its site, the latest in a series of platform crackdowns on the unfounded and sprawling conspiracy theory.

What is QAnon?

QAnon followers have an intertwined series of beliefs, based on anonymous Web postings from “Q,” who claims to have insider knowledge of the Trump administration.

A core tenet of the conspiracy theory is that US President Donald Trump is secretly fighting a group of child-sex predators that includes prominent Democrats, Hollywood elites and “deep state” allies.

QAnon, which borrows some elements from the bogus “pizzagate” theory about a pedophile ring run out of a Washington DC, restaurant, has become a “big tent” conspiracy theory encompassing misinformation about topics ranging from alien landings to vaccine safety.

Followers of QAnon say a so-called Great Awakening is coming to bring salvation.

Just recently, Facebook has been banning content that is related to the whole QAnon conspiracy theory as well as coronavirus misinformation. According to a study by a certain non-profit advocacy group called Avaaz, Facebook is actually failing as certain Facebook Pages still found a way to spread fake news and go around the whole AI system.

The known way around Facebook's fact-checking AI

According to Mashable, the way to get around the AI fact check is actually by the use of either photos or memes in order to spread misinformation. Avaaz researchers were able to look into 119 different "repeat misinformed" or pages that have actually spread misinformation over three times, in order to actually understand how they were able to get past Facebook's AI detection.

It was found that in order to get past detection, all that needs to be done is to change the background color or even the font of the meme or photo that is being shared. The location of the whole text or meme can also be changed and it can also be cropped. Another technique is actually to take a text from an image and also copy paste it on the top of another image or meme.

The findings of "repeat misinformer" Facebook pages

Avaaz was able to estimate that the whole 119 "repeat misinformer" Facebook pages were actually able to gain 5.2 billion views all the way from August 2019 up to August 2020. There are also alternative versions of the whole fact-checked posts that actually gained about 141 million views as well as 5.6 million interactions.

In short, the most used way to get past Facebook's misinformation and fact-checking AI is through the use of images. Whereas texts can easily be scanned and pop up instantly, images actually cannot and Facebook still uses human content moderators in order to identify some images.

Why do images get past Facebook's fact-check AI?

The thing about using images is that content moderators usually look at an image and attack about five different words related to that image. Once those words are searched, then the image pops up. However, when it comes to memes or text images, it's hard to point out what they mean and they could sometimes slip past content moderators.

With the use of images on Facebook, as long as the background picture is not gory or does not violate their content as well, they could very well be used to get past the Facebook fact-check AI. Although according to Daily Mail, they are extending efforts to fight against the spread of misinformation through the use of reverse image searching. But for original photos, they should still be able to bypass this.

Although using graphic content is strictly prohibited (but sometimes still get through) text images, especially those with picture backgrounds, can still be a loophole for people to get past the whole AI fact-check and might even be the reason for certain parties, groups of people, or even individuals spreading misinformation.

A Navy destroyer’s refueling stop in a little-known country on the tip of the Arabian peninsula 20 years ago today led to a deadly attack by the Sunni Jihadi group al-Qaeda. It was the escalation of their war on the U.S., which wasn’t fully prepared for what Osama bin Laden had in mind.

On Oct. 12, 2000, an explosion rocked the hull of guided-missile destroyer Cole as it sat for refueling in the Port of Aden, Yemen.

The 40-by-60-foot hole created by the explosion left all able-bodied sailors battling fires and flooding for 96 hours just to stay afloat. Seventeen sailors were killed, and another 37 injured by the blast.

“We were standing there speaking one moment, and then the next moment we were on the deck on the other side of the shop and it was dark, the room was starting to fill up with smoke and we couldn’t breathe so well,” said Senior Chief Damage Controlman William Merchen in a Navy press release. He was one of several crew members quoted in the release.

Then a petty officer third class, Merchen is now nearing retirement. And almost two decades after the explosion that changed his life, he has returned to Cole to teach a new generation of sailors how to react to casualties and damage aboard their ship. Ceremonies will be held today to honor the fallen in Norfolk, Virginia, the ship’s homeport and Washington D.C.

“It has shaped everything that I’ve done at every command I’ve been to,” said Merchen. “There hasn’t been a single one of those trainings or drills that I haven’t thought about the attack on Cole.”

Abdel Rahim al-Nashiri and Jamal Mohammed al-Bedawi, the

two Al-Qaeda suspects convicted for the bombing, were

sentenced to death September 29, 2004 by a Yemeni court.

Four other suspects were given ten years in prison.

WASHINGTON — Three years after their formation, the U.S. Marine Corps' tactical information warfare forces are at an inflection point, as they make changes to how they operate per directions from the commandant, according to a top official.

The Marine expeditionary force information groups, or MIG, were created in 2017 as a means of modernizing the Corps and keeping pace with adversaries who exploit the information environment via cyberattacks, propaganda and electronic warfare. The MIGs includes tactical cyber operators to conduct defensive cyber operations, electronic warfare, signals intelligence and other information-related capabilities.

As each of the military services reorganize under a banner that’s loosely referred to as information warfare, the Corps' version is dubbed “operations in the information environment,” purposefully eschewing the term “information warfare.”

“Over the past three years we have learned a lot about conducting operations in the information environment through the implementation of the MIGs. As part of the overall Marine Corps Force Design efforts, we are turning our lessons learned into process improvements at the MIG level and continuing to refine our capability requirements at the MIG and tactical level,” Jennifer Edgin, assistant deputy commandant for information, told C4ISRNET. “The improvements are based on ensuring survivability and lethality of our expeditionary forces and ensuring that every Marine has access to information when they need it, how they need it, on demand.”

The commandant of the Marine Corps has directed a force design update and required the service to not only slim down — meaning there will be cuts in units as well as fleets of large platforms such as tanks — but also to better integrate with the Navy by acting as an expeditionary extension of the fleet.

Under new guidance, the Marine Corps is working to more seamlessly integrate all its forces, to include information warfare, with the Navy.(Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Codie L. Soule/Navy)

This integration is taking place from operational and strategic levels all the way down to the more tactical carrier strike group and amphibious ready group/Marine expeditionary unit levels, culminating at the joint maritime level of the combatant commands.

Officials say that based on preliminary force design ideas, the commander of a Marine expeditionary unit in 2030 will likely will need a cyber planner, a psychological operations planner and someone who understands space. This would mean the force must also figure out how to integrate those individuals into the expeditionary strike group.

What’s Happening in Xinjiang?

The Chinese Communist Party is waging a targeted campaign against Uyghur women, men, and children, and members of other Turkic Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang, China. Documented human rights abuses include coercive population control methods, forced labor, arbitrary detention in internment camps, torture, physical and sexual abuse, mass surveillance, family separation, and repression of cultural and religious expression.

In recent years, these egregious abuses have increased through government policies under the pretext and justification of fighting the “three evils” of “ethnic separatism, religious extremism, and violent terrorism.”

The U.S. Department of State, scholars, human rights organizations, journalists, think tanks, and survivors of the Xinjiang camps themselves have provided ample information substantiating these abuses including:

Coercive population control through forced abortion, forced sterilization, and involuntary implantation of birth control;

The detention of more than one million Uyghurs, ethnic Kazakhs, ethnic Kyrgyz, and members of other Muslim minority groups in internment camps;

Forced labor in facilities nearby or affiliated with the internment camps;

The destruction and closure of mosques and other religious sites, prevention of youths from participating in religious activities, forced political indoctrination or “re-education”.

Forced Population Control

The CCP is perpetrating a sustained campaign of forced sterilization, forced abortion, and involuntary implantation of birth control. Recent, documented evidence of these practices in Xinjiang is consistent with decades of CCP practices that demonstrate an utter disregard for the sanctity of human life and basic human dignity. We call on the Chinese Communist Party to immediately end these horrific practices and ask all nations to join the United States in demanding an end to these dehumanizing abuses.

Forced Labor

Since 2017, the CCP has ramped up its campaign of brutal repression of Uyghurs and members of other Muslim minority groups through far-reaching and arbitrary detention and forced labor. In some cases, authorities have detained members of these groups based on spurious “birth policy violations.” The CCP’s use of forced labor to target members of ethnic and religious minority communities is not confined to the Xinjiang region, and is increasingly taking place throughout China through the CCP government-facilitated arrangements with private sector manufacturers. The government expanded this campaign through the transfer of more than 80,000 detainees into forced labor in as many as 19 other provinces during the 2019 reporting period, according to NGO estimates and media reports. The U.S. Department of State, along with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a business advisory to caution businesses about the risks of supply chain links to entities that engage in human rights abuses, including forced labor, in Xinjiang and elsewhere in China.

Violations of Religious Freedom

The CCP is among the worst violators of religious freedom in the world and it continues to show blatant disregard for religious freedom and exercises extreme hostility to members of all religious faiths, including Protestants, Catholics, Tibetan Buddhists, Uyghur Muslims, and Falun Gong. The CCP’s campaign of repression against Uyghur Muslims and members of other minority groups in Xinjiang continues to escalate. More than one million Uyghurs, ethnic Kazakhs, and members of other minority Muslim groups have been arbitrarily detained in internment camps since April 2017. In practice, the CCP targets everyday expression of Islamic belief such as owning a Quran, praying, avoiding alcohol or tobacco, fasting during Ramadan, as well as secular aspects of non-Chinese culture such as Uyghur language and Uyghur music.

The do-it-all goggle under development by the Army will see its first ruggedized test with a company-level exercise this month, with fielding to begin next year with one unit, followed by the distribution of 40,000 devices across the service.

The Integrated Visual Augmentation System is an effort to put the connected world of a fighter pilot in the sight picture of the close combat soldier or Marine.

Brig. Gen. Anthony Potts, who commands Program Executive Office Soldier, and Brig. Gen. David Hodne, commandant of the Army’s Infantry School and director of the Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team, lead the effort. The officers spoke with Army Times about the system ahead of this year’s Association of the U.S. Army conference.

The Army wants to buy 40,000 ‘mixed reality’ goggles

The goggle would go to "top tier" Army units first.

October’s field testing at Fort Pickett, Virginia, will feature a company-sized force tasked with clearing a trench at night — one of the more challenging and potentially deadly tasks that infantry must perform.

Hodne called this field test a “significant” point in the device’s development.

But the device has grabbed headlines for another feature: It’s expected to monitor the state of the soldier, including hydration, fatigue, stress and temperature.

The relevancy of that capability came a litter early, thanks to COVID-19.

In April, developers adjusted software in the device to allow it to take a user’s temperature. The IVAS' built-in sensor can, from a distance, read a temperature. It’s not ready for doing so in austere conditions, but it was shown to work, running through 300 soldiers in about 30 minutes at an indoor location at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Potts said the system will help soldiers build and rehearse their missions, including reconnaissance, attack by fire and assault.

An added feature not previously discussed in detail is the addition of the Solder Borne Sensor, a micro-drone controlled with IVAS. Soldiers will be able to see from the drone’s point of view as it performs midair reconnaissance.

“They’re flying it off of their tactical assault kit,” Potts said.

Shortly following the field test in Virginia, the unit using IVAS will go to Alaska for a cold weather evaluation, followed by a trip to potentially Puerto Rico or Panama for jungle conditions, Potts said.

If approved, as many as 1,600 systems could be built for the four-phase test, which will include operational testing, he added.

Another test will incorporate the Family of Weapons Sights-Individual in place of the pending crew-served versions so that gunners can pop smoke into the trench and then test the device’s ability to see through the obscurant so soldiers can identify and destroy targets.

Demonstrations in 2017 of the FWS-I at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, to media involved Army Times observing the see-through-smoke capability.

The FWS-I also includes rapid target acquisition, in which the goggle can lock onto a target through the weapon’s sight, much like a fighter pilot, and use the weapon to fire over obstacles or around corners without exposing the shooter.

FWS-I and rapid target acquisition are already incorporated into early versions of the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular, of which the Soldier Lethality Cross-Functional Team fielded of last year with PEO Soldier as a directed requirement. However, the team is not yet issuing them on a large scale.

The 82nd Airborne Division will soon get the device; one unit in Hawaii and another deployed to Korea already have it.

Potts said average shooters are now hitting targets at the 800- to 900-meter range with FWS-I and rapid target acquisition. That’s nearly triple the distance during unaided firing and more than 300 meters past standard optics marksmanship ranges.

“Soldiers love that system,” Hodne said. When they’re used to the older PVS-14 and then get increased ranges, high-definition clarity and thermal sensing, “it’s night and day, you can’t compare the two.”

During the annual Maneuver Warfighter Conference at Fort Benning in September, Lt. Col. Brad Winn, the lead action officer for IVAS under the Soldier Lethality CFT, highlighted the device’s day and night rapid target acquisition and thermal capabilities.

The device is expected to have an 80-degree by 40-degree field of view, and software capabilities are planned to include facial recognition and text translation. “IVAS can tell who people are and translate various languages into English,” Winn said.

Another key feature is navigation. During an early prototype demonstration, and Army Times reporter viewed the device, which maintained compass headings in the view and allowed for digital, 3D map display views within the headset. Soldiers can mark locations of enemies and allies on that virtual map and share the data within their squad, platoon or company.

Using recording options, training can play back instant after-action reviews, providing the location of each unit member during a shoot house drill, patrol or reconnaissance training evolution.

Since early 2019, developers have refined the design and software with Microsoft, using the company’s virtual reality HoloLens goggle as the initial device. So far, they’ve conducted more than 25 tests with more than 1,000 participants. That started in squads and moved to platoon-sized work late last year, Winn said.

The ruggedized, military form factor version is what’s to be tested at Fort Pickett this month with a company-sized, 72-hour mission.

Marines are slated to provide testing and feedback on the firing range, particularly in relation to target acquisition. The Army participants will run the maneuver portion of the testing, Hodne said.

So far, members of Army Special Forces, Rangers, and soldiers with 25th Infantry Division, 10th Mountain Division and 82nd Airborne Division as well as Marines have tested the device.

Once fielded, it will be used by close combat formations, infantry, combat engineers and scouts in the active, Guard and Reserve components, Winn said.

In an interview on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” former acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Richard Grenell reacted to DNI John Ratcliffe recently declassifying documents that show former CIA Director John Brennan briefed former President Barack Obama on 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s “plan” to distract the American public from her email scandal by alleging Russian collusion ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Grenell said it is clear now the alleged Russian collusion is a “hoax” that “career intelligence officials” knew about it and kept quiet. He also proclaimed that “somebody needs to go to jail” for their involvement.

“We now know that not only was this a Russian collusion hoax but that it was known to be a Russian collusion hoax by career intelligence officials. And that’s a really big distinction,” Grenell told host Maria Bartiromo. “We now know that insiders in the government at the CIA, at DOJ, at FBI, they knew that this was a Russian collusion hoax, and they allowed it to go forward for a variety of reasons. They were convinced that Hillary would win, and they didn’t really want to challenge Goliath. They thought that their careers could be benefited if they just shut up. But here is the key to this whole argument, that politicians in Washington need to focus on. I would also say the president’s cabinet members and the inspector generals all need to focus on. Right now, we have Comey and Brennan and others saying that they didn’t know that this was a Russian collusion hoax. Their people knew, and so what we need to figure out is what level are these individuals going to go to jail. Somebody needs to go to jail and be prosecuted first, obviously, and this is a slam dunk. They lied to the American people. They knew a truth, and they hid the truth. This can never happen again. We cannot allow our government to weaponize information to hold it back.”

“The American people need to understand that those in Washington are hiding information from them,” he added. “They think we’re stupid.”

Much of the hostility toward Christopher Columbus can be traced back to Howard Zinn's popular book of polemical history, "A People's History of the United States."

Attacks against statues of Christopher Columbus and calls to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day have become a Columbus Day ritual in recent years. This year they began early, shortly after the May 25 death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police, as protests against police and "systemic" racism quickly turned into riots. This year's riots differed from others, such as Watts in 1965 and Ferguson in 2014. This summer's destruction rippled outward beyond the communities where the alleged police brutality took place. Symbolic vengeance for what was seen as the murder of a black man by white police officers was exacted in the widening desecration, destruction and removal of public historical monuments: first, statues of Confederates, then Columbus and, finally, an increasingly indiscriminate sweep of figures from American history, including even abolitionists, black Union soldiers, and the commander of the Union Army, Ulysses S. Grant. Much of the hostility toward Columbus can be traced back to Howard Zinn's popular book of polemical history, "A People's History of the United States," in continuous publication since 1980. The claims in this book are now widely accepted as conventional wisdom. Wikipedia, for example, attributes this summer's wave of attacks on and removal of more than 30 Columbus statues to the explorer's "enslavement of and systemic violence against the indigenous people of the Caribbean, including the genocide of the Taino people."

"A People's History" is used increasingly as a core history textbook in schools. The Zinn Education Project offers lessons based on Zinn's book, as well as "Abolish Columbus Day" kits. Zinn, ten years after his death, remains an icon of the political left and a profound influence in shaping unwary students' understanding of our national history. What happened in New Haven, Conn., this summer provides a case study. A statue of Columbus had stood in the city's Wooster Square Park since 1892. But on June 24, 2020, the statue, defaced with red paint, was taken down by workers, as fights erupted between supporters and opponents of the removal. Randall Beach, New Haven Register columnist, used Zinn's book to advocate for the statue's removal in a June 25 column headlined "With the Columbus statue gone, let the healing begin." Beach described the fights as occurring between Black Lives Matter members and opponents. One man told Beach he wanted the statue to stay because Columbus was not "a murderer and a rapist." This unnamed man echoed letter-writer Frank Mongillo, III, who objected to the removal of the statue, which had been funded by donations from "a group of Italian societies" and which, he said, symbolized pride and helped "build a sense of connection between the Italian community and America's history." Beach wrote that he had asked the man in the park "if he had read the historian Howard Zinn and his 'People's History of the United States' … Zinn used Columbus' journal and the observations of a writer-priest to amass extensive evidence that Columbus committed atrocities. …"

Beach was repeating claims from his June 18 column, which relied on the famous opening pages of Zinn's book, which, as demonstrated in my own "Debunking Howard Zinn," Zinn actually plagiarized from a book for high school students by his fellow anti-Vietnam War organizer, Hans Koning, a novelist. Zinn also quoted deceptively from Columbus' journal. One of these deceptive quotations cited by Beach formed the basis for a scene in "The Sopranos." The teenage A.J., doing homework, reads from Zinn's book: "They would make fine servants. … With fifty men we could subjugate them and make them do whatever we want." The passage, A.J. says, is proof that Columbus was a "slave trader." Television viewers did not see the ellipses, and they should not have needed to, for ellipses are used to eliminate short, nonessential passages. Zinn's, however, leave out pages — two days' worth of the explorer's log entries, including such sentences about the native inhabitants he encountered as: "I know that they are a people who can be made free and converted to our Holy Faith more by love than by force."

Risks for holders have reduced due to Deutsche Bank’s “improved capitalization”, according to a statement. The ratings agency also believes that the bank will maintain “a wide enough buffer” over key capital thresholds that enables it to make distributions, such as AT1 coupon payments. Deutsche Bank reported a common equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio of 13.3% at end of the second quarter, up from 12.8% in the first, helped by factors including repayments of revolving credit facilities and regulatory relief. Fitch had expected the ratio to decline. The bank’s total capital also improved due to Tier 2 issuance in May and July.

The bank’s 1.75 billion-euro ($2 billion) note, which may be called in April 2022, was quoted about 0.2 cents higher on the euro on Monday, in line with the broader sector. Still, the note’s price is at the highest for nearly a month, at about 93 cents on the euro. It hit a low of about 53 cents in March as the coronavirus crisis triggered a market-wide sell-off.
