Benghazi: The Forgotten "September 11th" Attack On The US Consulate In Libya

If you say “September 11” most people automatically think of the attacks on the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. What they probably don’t even remember happened on September 11, were the attacks on the United States Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012.

Once the Libyan Revolution began in February 2011, the CIA began placing assets in the region, attempting to make contacts within the region. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, whose name and image would soon become synonymous with the Benghazi attacks, was the first liaison between the United States and the rebels. The task before the American intelligence community at that time was securing arms in the country, most notably shoulder-fired missiles, taken from the Libyan military.

Eastern Libya and Benghazi were the primary focal points of intelligence-gathering in the country. But there was something else at work here: The CIA was using the country as a base to funnel weapons to anti-Assad forces in Syria, as well as their alleged diplomatic mission.

Early Rumblings of Disorder in Benghazi

Trouble started in April 2012. This was when two former security guards of the consulate threw an IED over the fence. No casualties were reported, but another bomb was thrown at a convoy just four days later. Soon after, in May, the office of the International Red Cross in Benghazi was attacked and the local al-Qaeda affiliate claimed responsibility. On August 6, the Red Cross suspended operations in Libya.

This was all part of a troubling escalation of violence in the region. The British Ambassador Dominic Asquith was the victim of an assassination attempt on June 10, 2012. As a result of this and of rocket attacks on convoys, the British withdrew their entire consular staff from Libya in late June of that year.

American military and consular personnel on the scene were increasingly troubled by the situation and communicated their concerns to top brass through official channels. Two security guards in the consulate noticed a Libyan police officer (or at least someone dressed as one) taking pictures of the building, which raised alarms. Indeed, consular officials had been requesting additional security as far back as March.

On June 6, 2012, a large hole was blown in the wall of the consulate gate. It was estimated that 40 men could go through the hole in the wall. In July, the State Department informed officials on the ground that the existing security contract would not be renewed. On August 2, Ambassador Stephens requested additional security detail. The State Department responded by completely removing his security detail three days later. Three days after this, his security detail had left Libya entirely. On August 16, the regional security officer warned then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the security situation in Libya was “dire.”

The Day of the Attack on Benghazi: The Cover-Up Begins

The September 11, 2012 attack was actually two attacks by two separate militias. The first was the attack on the diplomatic mission, the second was a mortar attack on the CIA annex. But the attacks themselves were effectively watched in real time by the White House, thanks to security drones in the region. By 5:10pm ET, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta were watching real-time footage via a drone deployed to the area.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blackstone Group Inc (N:BX) Chief Executive Stephen Schwarzman has spent more than $27 million so far this year backing U.S. politicians, including President Donald Trump, making him Wall Street's largest campaign contributor, according to a Reuters review of regulatory filings.

Schwarzman, whose net worth is pegged by Forbes at $18.2 billion, has given more to political campaigns this year than those who outspent him on Wall Street in the previous U.S. presidential election cycle of 2016, including Bloomberg LP founder Michael Bloomberg and hedge fund veterans George Soros, Paul Singer and Robert Mercer, the filings from the Center of Responsive Politics and the Campaign Finance Institute show.

With less than two months left till the Nov. 3 election, Schwarzman, a lifelong Republican, has more than doubled his political donations compared to the 2018 midterm election, and raised them more than fivefold since 2016, the filings show.

Blackstone declined to comment on what has been driving the increase in Schwarzman's political donations and did not make him available for an interview. The jump in his election spending comes as Trump trails his Democratic challenger Joe Biden in opinion polls, and as his Republican party fights to keep control of the Senate, defending more seats than it is challenging.

"Schwarzman, like many Republican donors, believes this will be a close election," said Paul Herrnson, a political science professor at the University of Connecticut and research fellow at the Center for Responsive Politics.

Trump's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

"President Trump enjoys support from a vast number of industries, but most importantly, from real voters across the country," a Republican National Committee spokeswoman said in a statement.

Schwarzman, whose firm is one of the world's largest real estate investors, got to know Trump in New York social circles when the latter was a property developer. He backed Trump's bid for president in 2016, and chaired the White House's strategic and policy forum, an advisory council comprising business leaders that was disbanded after Trump stirred controversy with comments on a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.

Schwarzman, 73, remains an unofficial adviser to Trump, and earlier this year he was named as a member of the 'Great American Economic Revival Industry Groups', which the White House formed as part of its policy response to the coronavirus outbreak.

With $564 billion in assets, Blackstone is the world's largest manager of alternative investments, such as private equity, real estate, corporate credit and hedge funds. While the rise in its shares during Trump's tenure - a 70% increase since he took office - is in line with the rally in its stock during President Barack Obama's second term, Schwarzman has been an ardent supporter of Trump and Republican causes, and a critic of Obama's administration.

In 2010, Schwarzman compared Obama's unsuccessful proposal to raise the tax rate on carried interest received by private equity fund managers to Adolf Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939, subsequently apologizing for the analogy. When Trump lowered corporate and some individual tax rates in 2017, Schwarzman called the move a "game changer".

Yet Schwarzman's support of Trump has not been without compromise. He has been a high-profile advocate of closer U.S.-China ties, sponsoring a $575 million international scholarship program in partnership with Tsinghua University in Beijing, even as Trump pushes for "decoupling" from China following rows over trade, cybersecurity and the spread of the coronavirus.

PAC DONATIONS

In March, Schwarzman donated $3 million to America First Action Inc, an independent political action committee known as a super PAC, that is closely aligned to Trump.

Schwarzman's largest donations, however, have gone to the Senate Leadership Fund and the Congressional Leadership Fund, the two Republican super PACs whose main goal is to maintain or secure the party's majority in both houses of Congress, according to the funds' websites.

As of the end of July, Schwarzman had donated $20 million and $2.5 million to the Senate and Congressional Leadership Funds, respectively.

Other senior Blackstone executives are prominent Democratic donors. Schwarzman's No. 2, Blackstone President Jonathan Gray, has spent more than $1.3 million backing Democratic politicians in this election cycle, including Biden.

This is in line with his predecessor Tony James, who is also a major backer of Democrats and now serves as Blackstone's executive vice chairman.

California Cities Using Their Streets As Collateral To Pay Down Pension Liabilities With Debt

What happens when your state or city has massive unfunded pension liabilities, no direct access to the Fed's money printer and can't tax your state any further because you're driving people out in droves?

You take on more debt, using whatever you can think of as collateral.

Such was the case in West Covina this July, where the city is paying off its $205 million debt to CalPERS by issuing bonds using its city streets as collateral, according to Forbes. The city of Torrance has done the same thing; it will issue $350 million in bonds using its streets as collateral, as well.

Both cities are using something called "lease revenue bonds" which means that:

Torrance and West Covina are each using these bonds to, in principle, lease their city streets to a special Financing Authority, which will pay the city their up-front money, and “rent” the streets back to the city for the 25 year term of the agreement, in order to pay off the bonds.

In this structure, however, the bondholders don't actually have rights to lay claim to the streets. Rather the mechanism is described as a loophole to get around the voter approval that comes with "general obligation bonds".

The purpose of the bonds is that they can be implemented quickly while still functioning as pension obligation bonds, the report notes. The trade-off is that lease revenue bonds are not rated as highly as a traditionally POBs.

“Depending on the legal structure, there may be added flexibility for use of proceeds to CalPERS or more strategic timing of investing in the market... These things aren’t possible under a traditional POB structure,” said Mike Meyer of NHA Advisors.

The cities are in a rush to refinance while rates are low while, at the same time, CalPERS is in a desperate push to boost its returns, most recently taking on $80 billion in leverage to do so, as we noted this summer.

As of now, the state of both cities' pension liabilities is as follows, according to Forbes:

The city of West Covina pension plan is 71% funded, but to pay down its underfunding and fund new accruals, must pay 44% of payroll.

The West Covina public safety plan is 62% funded and requires a contribution of 74% of payroll to fund new accruals and pay down underfunding.

The Torrance city pension is 79% funded with 24%-of-payroll contributions; the Torrance fire pension, 65% funded, 68%-of-payroll contributions; and the Torrance police pension, 62% funded, 78% of payroll contributions.

Hilltop Securities, who underwrote the West Covina bonds, said: “This is the fastest form which the city would be able to use and issue bonds.”

Female police officer jailed for using her badge to steal six properties

A female police officer has been jailed for using her position to steal six vacant homes by claiming squatters' rights.

Former sergeant Rosa Rossi used her badge to convince tradesmen to change locks on the properties across Melbourne and build her illegal portfolio.

Three were in the western Victorian town of Willaura and the rest in the Melbourne suburbs of Malvern, Chadstone and Brooklyn.

The 56-year-old took over the houses between April 2016 and June 2017 after misusing police database to gain information about vacant houses.

Rossi eventually resigned from Victoria Police and pleaded guilty to nine charges including of obtaining property by deception, perjury, and unauthorised access to police information following an anti-corruption investigation.

In May of this year, Judge Martine Marich described Rossi as an "energetic fraudster".

One of her victims was a disability pensioner, who told the court he felt "like a fool".

"It didn't seem right to me that a police officer would be up to anything fraudulent."

Today Rossi was sentenced to four years and six months behind bars. She is the first female police officer to be jailed in Victoria.

A new report showing that US state-level voter databases were publicly available calls into question the narrative that Russian intelligence “targeted” US state election-related websites in 2016.

A September 1 report in the Moscow daily Kommersant on a “dark web” site offering a database of personal information on millions of registered American voters undermines one of the central themes of the Russia hysteria pervading US politics.

Democratic politicians and corporate media pundits have long accepted it as fact that Russian intelligence “targeted” US state election-related websites in 2016. But the Kommersant report shows that those state registered voter databases were already available to anyone in the public domain, eliminating any official Russian motive for hacking state websites.

Kommersant reported that a user on a dark web Forum known as Gorka9 offered free access to databases containing the information of 7.6 million Michigan voters, along with the state voter databases of Connecticut, Arkansas, Florida and North Carolina.

There are differences between the Michigan database described by Gorka9 and the one that the State of Michigan releases to the public upon request. Tracy Wimmer, the spokesperson for the Michigan Secretary of State, said in an e-mail to Grayzone that when the Michigan voter registration database is released to the public upon request, the state withholds “date of birth (year of birth is included), driver’s license number, the last four digitals of someone’s social security number, email address and phone number….” However, Gorka9’s description of the Michigan data includes driver’s license numbers, full dates of birth, social security numbers and emails.

In fact both un-redacted and redacted state voter files are obviously widely available on the dark web as well as elsewhere on the internet. Meduza, a Russian-language news site based in Riga, Latvia, published the Kommersant story along with an “anonFiles” download portal for access to the Michigan voter database and a page from it showing that it is the officially redacted version. The DHS and the FBI both acknowledged in response to the Kommersant story that “a lot of voter registration data is publicly available or easily purchased.”

Criminal hackers have been seeking to extract such personal information from online state personal databases for many years — not only from voter registration databases but from drivers license, health care and other databases. Oregon’s chief information security officer, Lisa Vasa, told the Washington Post in September 2017 that her team blocks “upwards of 14 million attempts to access our network every day.”

Ken Menzell, the legal counsel to the Illinois state Board of Elections, told this writer in a 2017 interview that the only thing new about the hack of the state’s voter database in 2016, in which personal data on 200,000 Illinois registered voters was exfiltrated, was that the hackers succeeded. Menzell recalled that hackers had been “trying constantly” to get into every Illinois personal database ever since 2006.

The motive for the hackers was simple: as observed by Andrey Arsentiev, the head of analytics and special projects at the private security partnership, Infowatch, databases can be mined for profits on the dark web, primarily by selling them to scam artists working on a mass scale. Gorka9 was offering state voter files for free because the owner had already squeezed all the potential profit out of selling them.

For the Russian government, on the other hand, such databases would be of little or no value. When FBI counterintelligence chief Bill Priestap was asked by a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee in June 2017 how Moscow might use personal voter registration data, the only explanation he could come up with was that the Russian government and its intelligence agencies were completely ignorant of the character of U.S. state voter databases. “They took the data to understand what it consisted of,” Priestap declared.

Priestap was obviously unaware of the absurdity of the suggestion that the Russian government had no idea what was in such databases in 2016. After all, the state voter registration databases had already been released by the states themselves into the public domain, and had been bought and sold on the dark web for many years. The FBI has steered clear of the embarrassing suggestion by Priestap ever since.

Priestap’s inability to conjure up a plausible reason for Russia to hack U.S. election sites points to the illogical and baseless nature of the claims of a Russian threat to the U.S. presidential election.

An official who worked on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation wrote in a recently released email that he or she was in possession of an iPhone belonging to Lisa Page three days after the former FBI lawyer’s last day on the job and at a time when the device was thought to have been lost.

The special counsel’s office (SCO) and the Justice Department previously claimed to have no documents to show who handled Page’s iPhone after she turned it in on July 14, 2017, or who improperly wiped it two weeks later, before it could be checked for records, in violation of SCO policy.

SEATTLE - On Tuesday, Seattle City Council approved the use of city funds to pay for Kshama Sawant’s legal fees connected to the recall effort underway against her.

The people behind the recall movement will argue their case in front of a King County Superior Court judge on Wednesday.

The campaign says the 2,000 individuals who have donated so far have given an average of $24.

They call it a grassroots movement to take District 3 back from Sawant.

The campaign says people are afraid to speak up in support of the recall, fearful of retaliation.

At the heart of their argument is that Sawant violated the law and undermined public safety in the scope of her official duty as a council member. They say taxpayer dollars should not be used for Sawant’s legal fees.

In court, the recall campaign will argue 6 alleged violations including a June incident when they say Sawant led a march inside City Hall after hours. An employee at City Hall filed a complaint shortly after the event.

Another alleged violation is when Sawant led a group of protesters to Mayor Durkan’s home, disclosing an address that is confidential due to safety reasons.

The people behind the recall also blame Sawant for ‘CHOP’ saying she helped create the autonomous zone by encouraging protesters to take over SPD’s East Precinct.

Seattle police arrest 11 people, use pepper spray in downtown protest

Seattle police arrested 11 people Tuesday afternoon after they allegedly committed

property damage during an anti-police rally near the Space Needle, authorities said.

A group of about 20 to 30 people gathered near Denny Park around 3 p.m., before

marching north along Fifth Avenue North, according to a statement from the Seattle

Police Department. As they walked, some people in the group started damaging the

windows of nearby businesses and spray painting buildings, prompting other people

to try and intervene, the statement said.

According to the statement, officers then started using pepper spray and making arrests.

In a livestream recording of part of the protest, a group of bike officers can be seen

walking next to a group of protesters near the Seattle Center before pulling people

out of the crowd to take them into custody.

Officers later recovered bear mace, spray paint, a baton and a knife from those who

were arrested, the statement said.

One of the people who was arrested was transported to the hospital. No further

information about the person’s condition was immediately available.

The 10 others were booked into the King County Jail on investigation of malicious

mischief and obstruction.

The Victorian government will debate a new bill in the State Parliament this week which would hand authorities the power to forcibly detain “conspiracy theorists” and people suspected to likely spread coronavirus, such as anti-lockdown protesters and their close contacts.

If passed, the Omnibus (Emergency Measures) Bill will allow the state to detain anyone they suspect of being “high risk” or likely to negligently spread COVID-19, either if they have the virus or have been in contact with an infected person.

According to The Age, a state government spokesman said the rule could be applied to “conspiracy theorists who refuse to self-isolate or severely drug-affected or mentally impaired people who do not have the capacity to quarantine.”

Those detained could then be placed in quarantine facilities, such as hotels, where they can be monitored by authorities.

On Sunday police fined 200 people and made 74 arrests during an anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne. Could this bill lead to the mass-forced quarantining of similar anti-lockdown protesters?

Hospital wrongly claims woman who repeatedly tested negative DIED of the virus

A Melbourne hospital has been caught out writing off a patient's death by COVID-19 despite the woman never contracting the deadly virus.

The elderly woman - whom Daily Mail Australia has been asked not to name - died in Bellbird Private Hospital east of Melbourne in Blackburn South last month after being removed from St Basil’s Home for the Aged.

The woman's death certificate falsely recorded she died of COVID-19, and it was only fixed after complaint from her family.

Her daughter said the word COVID was eventually scribbled out by a Bellbird doctor and changed to what actually killed her.

'The doctor said "oops sorry, I just assumed it was COVID",' the woman said.

As coronavirus cases within Victoria's aged care sector continue to soar, there are fears the 'error' may not be an isolated incident.

The aged care facility had become a hot bed for the virus in July when a serious COVID-19 outbreak was ­declared at the Fawkner centre.

It was taken over by federal health authorities on July 22, with residents moved to Bellbird Private days later.

The hospital had been converted into a coronavirus treatment hospital as Victoria's elderly succumbed to the state's tragic second wave.

On Wednesday, Victoria recorded 1177 active cases of COVID-19 with 97 active outbreaks and six dead, bringing the tally to 570.

More than 200 cases of COVID have been linked to St Basil’s since the second deadly wave kicked off.

The daughter of one St Basil's resident told Daily Mail Australia she only realised her mother had been listed as a COVID death when she went to organise her funeral.

Under current regulations stipulated by Victoria's Department of Health and Human Services, victims of COVID must be buried in a body bag within their casket and cannot be viewed at the funeral home.

The woman, who did not approach Daily Mail Australia, said she had not revealed the incident earlier out of fear of reprisals on her children.

'I just got scared,' she said. 'But yes, mum's death certificate does say COVID and it doesn't say COVID now because I put up a stink.'

Already dealing with allegations of abuse against her sick mum at the hands of St Basil's, the woman said the dodgy death certificate added insult to injury.

'As soon as I saw it I called the hospital and I said "what's going on? Mum never tested positive to COVID, why have you put COVID?",' she said.

The woman explained to the doctor that her mother could not be buried clothed and would be required to be bagged.

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman wants the bail of alleged rioters who were arrested in Lancaster to be lowered.

Lancaster police initially arrested the people who were at the protest early Monday morning and charged them with arson, rioting and refusing to leave.

After more investigation, police then arrested five more people on Tuesday, including a 16-year-old boy. Those arrests were also connected to the riot that happened Sunday night into Monday morning.

Some local activists are also upset at the bail amounts. Lancaster Stands Up is a local group working to get those arrested legal help.

“Our elected officials are acting in lockstep to really prevent the kinds of reforms that I know our community is so hungry for,” said Jules Berkman-Hill, of Lancaster Stands Up.

Venezuela's president and top ministers are responsible for probable crimes against humanity including extrajudicial killings and the systematic use of torture, UN investigators said on Wednesday.

In their first report, a team of investigators tasked with probing a slew of alleged violations in Venezuela said they had found evidence that state actors, including President Nicolas Maduro, were behind serious international crimes.

The International Fact-Finding Mission, created by the UN Human Rights Council a year ago, "found reasonable grounds to believe that Venezuelan authorities and security forces have since 2014 planned and executed serious human rights violations," Marta Valinas, the mission's chairperson, said in a statement.

Some of those violations, "including arbitrary killings and the systematic use of torture, amount to crimes against humanity," she said.

"Far from being isolated acts, these crimes were coordinated and committed pursuant to state policies, with the knowledge or direct support of commanding officers and senior government officials."

The 411-page report spelled out which Venezuelan officials it deemed responsible, citing "reasonable grounds to believe that both the President and the Ministers of People's Power for Interior Relations, Justice and Peace, and for Defense, ordered or contributed to the commission of the crimes documented in this report."

- International 'legal action' -

The investigators demanded that Venezuelan authorities immediately carry out "independent, impartial and transparent investigations" into the violations, and ensure victims receive "full redress".

Other jurisdictions, including the International Criminal Court, "should also consider legal actions against individuals responsible for violations and crimes the mission identified," Valinas said.

Man Finds Suspected Brain Wrapped in Aluminum Foil on Wisconsin Beach

A man has found what is suspected to be a brain on a beach in Wisconsin.

Jimmy Senda, a construction worker, was taking a walk along the beach as he does every morning, looking for "sea glass and random stuff" to use in his artwork, as reported by Fox6.

While Senda usually walks on beaches further north, on Tuesday he took a stroll along the Racine County beach at Samuel Myers Park on Lake Michigan.

But instead of art supplies, Senda came across a mysterious item packaged in aluminum foil and tied with a pink rubber band.

Senda told Fox6: "Curiosity got to me, so I popped it open and it looked like a chicken breast—kind of. It took a little bit for it to really [register] what was going on; it was a brain."

As well as the brain-like item, the package contained flowers and what has been identified as either foreign currency or paper.

Senda said he then asked city workers nearby about the package, and they said they thought it looked like a brain. He then called the police, who arrived just before 9 a.m. local time. They also said they suspected it was a brain.

A bug was recently discovered in Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s official campaign app that allowed anyone to access sensitive voter information on millions of Americans. The privacy breach reportedly affects 191 million Americans.

TechCrunch reports that a recent study by the App Analyst, a mobile computing expert that reviews and investigates apps, found a major issue in Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s official campaign app. The campaign app, Vote Joe, allows Biden supporters to encourage friends and family members to vote in the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November by uploading their phone’s contact lists to see if their friends and family members have registered to vote.

The app matches the users’ contacts with voter data supplied from the political marketing firm TargetSmart which claims to have files on more than 191 million Americans. When the app finds a match, it displays the voter’s name, age, birthday, and which recent election they voted in. The app claims that this helps users “find people you know and encourage them to get involved.”

The App Analyst found that they could trick the app into collecting anyone’s information by creating a contact on his phone with the voter’s name. The analyst told TechCrunch that the app also pulls in a lot more data than it displays. By intercepting the data that is sent between the device and the app’s servers, the analyst saw more detailed and private information of voters including their home address, date of birth, gender, ethnicity, and political party affiliation.

The Biden campaign has reportedly issued an update to fix the bug. Matt Hill, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, told TechCrunch: “We were made aware about how our third-party app developer was providing additional fields of information from commercially available data that was not needed. We worked with our vendor quickly to fix the issue and remove the information. We are committed to protecting the privacy of our staff, volunteers and supporters will always work with our vendors to do so.”

TargetSmart claimed that a “limited amount of publicly or commercially available data” was accessible to other users. TargetSmart has previously found itself at the center of a data leak scandal. In 2017, a voter file complied by TargetSmart on nearly 600,000 voters in Alaska was left on an exposed server with no password, and in 2018 TechCrunch reported that almost 15 million records on Texas voters were found on an exposed server just months ahead of U.S. midterm elections.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday that France’s intervention to resolve the crisis in Lebanon is bound to fail unless the issue of Hezbollah’s weapons is not dealt with first.

“The United States has assumed its responsibility, and we will stop Iran buying Chinese tanks and Russian air defense systems and then selling weapons to Hezbollah [and] torpedoing [French] President [Emmanuel] Macron’s efforts in Lebanon,” Pompeo told France Inter radio, according to Reuters.

“You can’t allow Iran to have more money, power and arms, and at the same time try to disconnect Hezbollah from the disasters it provoked in Lebanon.”

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Lebanon in early September after the massive explosion in the Beirut port on Aug. 4, and helped Lebanese political parties agree to make Lebanon’s ambassador to Germany, Mustapha Adib, the prime minister-designate.

However, he has not yet addressed the major issue of Hezbollah’s weapons and power in the country.

Clergy sex abuse lawyer adds 3 to list of alleged perpetrators after settlement with Boston archdiocese

BOSTON — Mitchell Garabedian, whose law firm has obtained countless clergy sexual abuse settlements or arbitration awards on behalf of clients, has made public the names of three priests contained in a recent settlement with the Archdiocese of Boston.

The three names were posted on the firm’s website.

“Survivors want me to post the names of their perpetrators as part of the healing process,” said Garabedian in reference to the list he posts related to monetary awards in which the accused may maintain their innocence as such compensation is not an admission of guilt.

Survivors and their advocates have long called for more transparency and comprehensive from the church on clergy accused of sexual abuse, with some law firms publishing lists of accused clergy related to settlements. Some dioceses publish some data when allegations are found credible. In Massachusetts, Worcester and Fall River have no such listing, while Springfield and Boston do.

The Boston archdiocese does list the names of priests who have been sentenced or sanctioned on such charges either as the result of criminal or church proceedings, as well as those living archdiocesan clergy with such publicized cases not yet resolved.

It does not list deceased clergy who have not been publicly accused and had no church proceedings conducted or completed on sexual allegations against them even when the archdiocese gives compensation in a case involving such allegations made after their death.

In his explanation of why his archdiocese does not list such priests accused after their death, Cardinal Sean O’Malley has written that “it is extremely difficult to determine the credibility of these accusation, given that they involve matters that typically occurred decades ago,” and that the deceased has “no chance to address the allegations begin brought against him.”

A negotiated settlement does not involve an admission of guilt.

Police detained a man after he allegedly decapitated a statue of Jesus inside a Catholic Church in El Paso, Texas, the church reported.

The man allegedly walked into St. Patrick Cathedral on Tuesday and destroyed an almost 90-year-old statue of Jesus behind the main altar of the church, the El Paso Catholic Diocese said in an Instagram post with photos of the statue.

“This statue is one of my favorite representations of Jesus – his arms open wide in welcome, his heart aflame with love for us,” Bishop Mark Seitz said in the statement on the church’s Instagram. “I would often take inspiration from this image as I prepared for Mass.”

At least 10 Chinese companies have received FDA authorization for U.S. testing.

After reviewing the 161 emergency use authorizations granted by the FDA since February, I found that at least 10 Chinese companies were delivered the FDA stamp of approval to deliver diagnostic tests in the United States for SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.

These China-based companies have received FDA EUAs that grants them the ability to test for the coronavirus in America (including date of approval and link to FDA approval document):

The U.S. and global coronavirus testing regimes have recently come under intense scrutiny, after it became clear that the most common testing method, known as a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, has become completely unreliable in determining whether someone actually has the virus.

“The FDA’s Instructions for Use for the CDC 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel currently recommends a threshold of 40 cycles for a specimen to be considered positive,” which is well above the recommendations of scientists and experts evaluating testing accuracy.

EUAs are supposed to be granted only if a company can show that their test product is working to a high standard. But it is the FDA that is setting a poor testing standard that allows for companies to continue to produce poor data.

While Biden previously indicated that he would be releasing a list of potential Court nominees, specifically “African American women,” there is still no word from him on when that list will be published.

“We are putting together a list of a group of African American women who are qualified and have the experience to be on the court,” Biden said in June. “I am not going to release that until we go further down the line in vetting them.”

According to Grassley, Trump’s “transparency” in publishing the potential nominees is a privilege of voters that should also be afforded by Biden.

“The Biden-Harris ticket owes voters the same transparency President Trump has demonstrated along with the same commitment to nominate from that list should there be a vacancy. There’s no reason to hide something as consequential as who would be named to our highest court,” Grassley said.

“I sincerely hope he does not do that,” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) told The Hill. “We ought to go back to the regular order of things. If and when vacancies occur he can look for the very best person at that moment.”

US banks underwrite ChemChina bonds despite Pentagon watchlist

ChemChina has issued new offshore bonds with the help Goldman Sachs, Barclays and other leading Western financial institutions, despite being placed on a list of "Communist Chinese military companies" by the U.S. Defense Department last month.

Officially called China National Chemical Corp., the state-owned chemical maker raised a total of roughly $3 billion through dollar- and euro-denominated bonds.

Sheldon Adelson is plotting a spending spree to help Trump with under 50 days left until the election

Casino magnate and Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson is plotting a spending blitz to support President Donald Trump with just under 50 days to go until Election Day, CNBC has learned.

Adelson, CEO of Las Vegas Sands, is looking to spend around $20 million to $50 million in a last-ditch effort to help Trump overcome Joe Biden, according to people familiar with the matter.

Most of the money is expected to go toward the new pro-Trump super PAC, Preserve America, these people added. Other organizations, including the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and groups helping Republicans in Congress, could also see some of Adelson’s money.

One of the people noted that Adelson’s team has recently been in touch with GOP officials close to Trump about where best to deploy the cash. Another person noted that Adelson was a major donor who helped get Preserve America up and running. The people declined to be named as these efforts are private.

A person with Preserve America said the group would not confirm any donor information with anybody but the Federal Election Commission.

Representatives for Adelson did not return repeated requests for comment.

The development comes after Axios recently reported that Adelson’s top advisor, Andy Abboud, told a group of Republican donors that Adelson and his wife, Miriam, are planning to jump in to help Trump.

“I just want to say that I just spoke to the Adelsons,” Abboud reportedly said last month. “They are 110% behind the president. And that’s going to become apparent shortly.” Adelson, according to The New York Times, previously had a tense phone call with Trump, who accused the casino executive of not doing enough to help him.

Still, since their efforts to help Trump in 2016, the Adelsons have remained close to the president. Miriam Adelson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom two years ago, and Trump named Sheldon Adelson, along with several other business leaders, to the coronavirus-related “Opening Our Country Council.”

Trump may need more fundraising support from a big donor like Adelson than he lets on. His campaign was behind Biden’s in the overall amount they raised in August, with the former vice president and the Democratic National Committee bringing in $364.5 million last month. Trump and the Republican National Committee raised $210 million over the same period.

Democratic super PACs are combining to outspend many of the pro-Trump super PACs at the moment. Some Republican donors have been critical about the efforts being made by the pro-Trump PAC America First Action, which, as Politico reported, led to the creation of Preserve America and the expectation that Adelson would give to the PAC.

Trump trails Biden by 6.6 points, according to a Real Clear Politics national polling average.

The developments also come after Democratic billionaire Mike Bloomberg pledged to spend $100 million supporting Biden in swing state Florida. Bloomberg’s money will go toward a mix of television and digital ads targeting voters in that state, plus money earmarked for Democratic super PACs, and other Florida election efforts already underway, an aide told CNBC.

Bloomberg has a net worth of just over $54 billion and Adelson has a net worth of $33 billion, according to Forbes.

Trump’s Preserve America is in the midst of a $30 million ad blitz that, in part, is also targeting Florida voters.

Adelson’s potential spending spree could end up surpassing the amount he put up during the 2016 presidential election. Data from the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics shows that he and his wife combined to contribute over $82 million to mostly Republican causes that cycle. They were ranked second that cycle behind Democratic donor Tom Steyer and his wife, Kathryn, who gave $91 million to Democrats.

The Adelsons have given just over $27 million this cycle, CRP data shows.

They were the top donors during the 2018 congressional midterms, giving over $120 million, as the GOP lost its majority in the House and expanded its edge in the Senate.
