What The $500 Million CNET Media Deal Means For Red Ventures

Media giant ViacomCBS (VIAC) has sold its technology news brand CNET Media Group to Red Ventures for $500 million.

The deal, which also includes the Roadshow, CNET en Espanol, ZDNet, Gamespot, TVGuide, Metacritic, and Chowhound brands, comes after 25 years of owning the news outlet, which was picked up by CBS in 2008 for $1.8 billion.

ViacomCBS has been selling off some of its assets as it looks to move more firmly into the content streaming arena, Billboard reported. The company has also put Simon & Schuster up for sale along with its Manhattan headquarters, the news outlet said.

Red Ventures said that the senior leadership team will stay intact at CNET following the completion of the acquisition, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2020.

“Over the last 25 years CNET Media Group has built a dynamic portfolio of brands with well-earned authority on such topics as consumer tech and gaming that play an increasingly important role in people's lives,” Ric Elias, Red Ventures CEO and co-founder, said in a statement. “Red Ventures is eager to invest in CNET Media Group’s growth with more personalized consumer experiences that will reinvigorate CNET Media Group's brands and unlock unprecedented opportunity for all.”

Red Ventures has grown its digital media portfolio to include more than 100 digital brands. The company has over 3,000 employees located in 10 U.S. cities, the U.K., and Brazil. With the acquisition of CNET, Red Ventures said it will mark its foray into the consumer technology and gaming market.

“Every aspect of our lives – from our homes to our jobs, our income, and our well-being is impacted by the technology around us, so the content we consume and the brands we choose are highly personal,” Marc McCollum, president of Red Ventures’ Media & Technology group, said in a statement. “Adding CNET Media Group to our portfolio will further advance our mission to help people make some of the most important decisions of their lives. It will be a win for our teams, for our businesses, and most of all, for visitors and fans of the CNET Media Group’s brands.”

'That is something I've never shared publicly before'

Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum came out as bisexual during his first national media appearance since being found by police intoxicated and passed out in a room with a reported gay male escort and crystal meth.

Gillum and his wife, R. Jai Gillum, sat down with Tamron Hall for an interview to discuss that incident and the impact it had on his career and their marriage. The Gillums have three children. During the interview, Andrew Gillum disclosed his sexuality for the first time.

"To be very honest with you, when you didn't ask the question, you put it out there is whether or not I identify as gay," Gillum said. "And the answer is I don't identify as gay, but I do identify as bisexual, and that is something that I have never shared publicly before."

Gillum did not specify his intent for going to that hotel room in Miami Beach in March. After the incident became public, Gillum said he had been in town for a wedding and ended up having too much to drink. Politico reported that friends said Gillum was supposed to officiate the wedding, but didn't show up. Travis Dyson, the escort, said he he was unaware of any wedding.

Gillum withdrew from public life and entered rehab after the situation.

"I understand very well what people assume about that," Gillum said during the interview.

GIllum rejected the idea that his sexuality was a cause of his unfaithfulness.

"Bisexuality in and of itself doesn't lead to unfaithfulness," Gillum said. "There are men who are in marriages with women who just because they're married to a woman doesn't mean they're not attracted to other women, and at any point can slip up, make a mistake, do something, and that is what it is. The same thing in bisexual relationships.You can be attracted to both, you got a bigger terrain out there that you have to contend with, but you can still choose to be physically with one person."

R. Jai Gillum told Hall that she knew Gillum was bisexual when they got married.

"So many people just don't understand bisexuality," she said. "Bisexuality is just something different. I just believe that love and sexuality exist on a spectrum. All I care about is what's between us and what agreement we make."

Gillum, the former mayor of Tallahassee, Florida, narrowly lost the governor's race to Republican Ron DeSantis in 2018.

Australia Goes Full Fascist: State Issues First Ankle Tracker for Quarantine Violator

This week, Australia took its burgeoning fascist police state to a new level, with officials in Western Australia now issuing electronic ankle bracelets and forced isolation in specially designated hotels to anyone it believes has violated the new raft of controversial new ‘COVID laws.’

A 33-year-old woman from Perth in Western Australia has become the first person to be fitted with the state’s new electronic monitoring bracelet, after allegedly violating new COVID quarantine rules imposed on the population.

According to police reports, the woman arrived home from New South Wales state on September 1st, and was then directed to ‘self-isolate’ in her Perth home for 14 days as part of Australia’s new mandatory quarantine system.

She was then caught by agents working with the state’s newly deputised COVID enforcement force known as the “Self-Quarantine Assurance Team.” Agents claim they were only conducting a “routine check” when they discovered two men visiting the woman at her own house. Agents then raised the alarm to central office who then promptly ordered the woman be removed from her home and placed in a specially designated hotel which is being used by the state as a makeshift isolation facility where she would be tagged and surveilled for a period of two weeks.

On top of the forced detention, the woman was issued with a punitive $1,000 AUD fine for interacting with the two men during her initial home quarantine order.

According to the official police statement:

“After careful consideration of the circumstances of the breach and the woman’s previous history, the State Emergency Coordinator formed a view that it was necessary to monitor her location during the quarantine period.”

“The monitoring device, attached to the woman’s ankle, will remain in place until the end of the woman’s quarantine period.”

The 33-year-old woman becomes the first person in Western Australia to be fitted with the new electronic monitoring tag introduced under the COVID-19 State of Emergency laws.

This latest draconian move by Australian officials has raised new fears that the country is now being turned into a full-blown police state, as officials claim the country is in the midst of a ‘pandemic’ following a supposed ‘surge’ in the number of people testing positive PCR tests for coronavirus, even though overall hospitalisations and deaths have been relatively nominal.

Debt is the Real Pandemic

According to the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) latest “Update on the Budget Outlook,” this year’s $3.3 trillion federal deficit is not just three times larger than last year: it is the largest federal deficit in history. The CBO update also predicts that the federal debt will equal 104 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) next year and will reach 108 percent of GDP by 2030.

The CBO update also shows that the Social Security, Medicare, and highway trust funds will all be bankrupt by 2031. This will put pressure on Congress to bail out the trust funds thus further increasing the debt.

This year’s spike in federal spending was caused by the multi-trillion dollar coronavirus relief/economic stimulus bills passed by Congress and signed by the president. However, spending had already increased by $937 billion from the time President Trump was sworn in until the lockdown.

Federal spending is unlikely to be reduced no matter who wins the presidential election. Former Vice President Joe Biden has proposed increasing spending on everything from Obamacare to militarism to “green” cronyism. Yet some progressives are attacking Biden for being to “stingy” in his spending proposals. Even more distressing is how few progressives are critical of Biden’s support for increasing the military budget.

With some notable exceptions, such as his infrastructure plan, President Trump is not proposing any massive new spending programs. However, he Is not promising to stop increasing, much less cut, federal spending.

Most Republicans have abandoned their Obama-era opposition to deficit spending to support President Trump’s spending increases. This repeats a pattern where Republicans oppose deficit spending under a Democrat president but decide that “deficits don’t matter” when a Republican is sitting in the Oval Office. If Biden wins in November, Republicans will likely once again discover that deficits do matter, especially if Democrats also gain control of the Senate.

Government spending forcibly takes resources from the private sector, where they are used to produce goods and services desired by consumers, and puts them in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats. This distorts the market, reducing efficiency and lowering the people’s standard of living. This, combined with pressure to monetize the federal debt, causes the Federal Reserve to pump money into the economy leading to a boom-bust business cycle.

Unless Congress begins reducing spending, the coming economic crisis will be even worse. The logical place to start cutting spending is ending all unnecessary overseas commitments, corporate welfare, and shuttling down all unconstitutional federal agencies — starting with the Department of Education.

Leaked Chinese database show company's interest in Australia's space and science sector

Australia's fledgling space sector is proving to be a hot target for Chinese snooping, with Beijing tracking the movement of top-secret equipment from a tracking station outside Canberra to NASA in the United States.

Key points:

Zhenhua Data tracked a parcel from the CSIRO's Deep Space facility outside Canberra to a NASA lab in California

The massive database also profiles some of the agency's senior staff

A parliamentary inquiry is already underway into foreign interference through social media

And Commonwealth scientists with world-leading expertise have also been targeted by a Chinese company with links to the People's Liberation Army.

A leaked database developed by Shenzhen-based data company Zhenhua Data, obtained by the ABC as part of an international consortium of media outlets, has more than 70 records that reference CSIRO's staff and classified operations.

One entry shows Zhenhua Data monitored the March 2019 transfer of "scientific equipment" from Canberra's Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla all the way across the Pacific Ocean to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

It records the name of the German-flagged container ship that took the cargo, as well as the Los Angeles-based customs company that took possession of the package after it arrived at the Long Beach port.

"This database has got a vast amount of import-export data that is scraped up, presumably, or stolen or supplied somehow from import-export agents," Clive Hamilton from Charles Sturt University told the ABC.

"So this database is not just tracking people, but also tracking the movement of goods which might be of interest to China's intelligence services."

The database also shows Zhenhua spied on CSIRO's "transformational bioinformatics team" which is researching artificial intelligence (AI) and genomics in medicine.

An AI researcher at the Australian National University has also been profiled by the Chinese firm, and Zhenhua has also documented the CSIRO's work in the search for missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 and exploration on Mars.

"There'd be hundreds of thousands of references to CSIRO available on the public record," Professor Hamilton said.

"But this database is not indiscriminate, it's curated by people sitting there and deciding what to leave in and what to keep a little bit more of."

In the Birding California group on Facebook, bird watchers discussed the total silence that has come to their backyards, where the sounds of birds chirping and singing used to greet them in the morning.

“I live in Folsom—have not seen a bird or heard a bird chirp this morning,” said Jodi Root.

“We live in northern Nevada and have noticed the same thing,” added Gardnerville resident Karen Holden.

“Same here in Napa,” said Tammy Saunders, who said that things had become “very quiet which just adds to the eeriness of the orange colored dark sky.”

Almost 100 seasoned birdwatchers gave similar responses to the survey, with most noting that they saw a marked decline in birds visiting their feeders and birdbaths, as well as a clear thinning-out of the variety of species.

Like the insects that many birds rely on for food, wild bird populations have been in a state of major decline over recent years. However, the record-shattering heatwave and smokey, toxic air conditions in California and other western states haven’t only impacted human populations. Tragically, the ash that is falling across West Coast cities isn’t only comprised of trees and brush, but also includes the incinerated remains of birds and other creatures caught in the wildfires.

And as Deborah Pertersen of Inside Climate News reports, birds – with their highly sensitive respiratory systems that are instantly responsive to changes in environmental conditions – are acting as the global equivalent to the canary in a coal mine, at a time when seemingly the entire planet is on fire.

While much still remains unknown about how smoke impacts bird populations, doctoral candidate Andrew Stillman of the University of Connecticut notes that birds perpetually live on the edge, and extreme changes can have dire consequences for bird species.

“One thing that is important to point out is we do know high levels of smoke exposure can be harmful to birds,” Stillman told Inside Climate News. And unlike humans, birds “cannot escape like humans by going indoors.”

Veterinarians and bird scientists have also found that smoke can leave a damaging impact on the lung tissue of captive birds, leaving them susceptible to deadly respiratory infections, notes the Audubon Society.

Watching Democrat-aligned radicals raze our cities over the past three months has felt like a thousand mini-Pearl Harbors – only the enemy is within and the damage is in our backyards. Evidence of an alliance between Democrats and BLM couldn’t be more glaring. Pernicious riots have persisted, unchallenged, in Democrat strongholds with the imprimatur of untold Democrat mayors, city councils, and governors. The Democrat media delivers the news with an Orwellian blackout of the word “riot” as our cities immolate before our very eyes. The “it’s all Trump’s fault” blame game is relentlessly hawked by Democrats from Biden, Pelosi, and her minions in Congress, to state and local authorities. Democrat sympathizers in sports, entertainment, and corporate America kneel and capitulate to BLM demands with alarming ease, accede to cancellations, and willingly attend and promote mandatory re-education programs on white privilege. Most glaring is the DNC convention love fest with BLM and the shameless promotion of BLM at the DNC website.

That the violence would endure and balloon as it has, should come as no surprise. BLM never hid their incendiary Marxist agenda targeting the police, our political system, free markets, and the family – all of which are products of white supremacy and privilege. After a month of rioting, BLM leader Hank Newsome’s threat to “burn it all down” if BLM demands are not met, is nothing compared to his closing exhortation in that June 25, 2020 interview with Martha Macallum: “I just want black liberation and black sovereignty by any means necessary.” Two months later his dreams are being realized with whites and “whiteness” in the cross-hairs.

Imperious media, academic, Hollywood, and Beltway wokesters torment the rest of America with accusations of a type of racism that permeates everything we say, do, and are. Denying its existence is further evidence of it. Everything white people have created is saturated with institutional and systemic racism that can only be eradicated by public renunciation of one’s white privilege and an admission it has spawned nothing but evil.

AG Barr Tackles #MuhNothingIsHappening crowd:

Speaking exclusively to Townhall on a recent flight from Cleveland to Washington, D.C., Attorney General Bill Barr discussed the timing of U.S. Attorney John Durham's investigation into the FBI's Russia probe and efforts by the Department of Justice to ensure it remains non-political on the matter.

"I've said that there are sort of two missions, I see it. One is to get to the bottom of what happened and get the facts out about that and we are going to do that and you know, try to be careful about that, that we don't do anything that would unduly interfere with the election," Barr said. "And then there's the issue of whether someone crossed the line. In the course of these, in my view, unjustified and horrible abuse of power, actually cross the line and committed a federal offense and I can't really say anything about the status of that investigation except that it's continuing and we'll be careful about not bringing indictments in a way that can be viewed as interfering with the election."

In August, FBI attorney Kevin Clinesmith became the first individual under investigation by Durham to plead guilty to charges of illegally doctoring information on a FISA warrant application for Trump campaign advisor Carter Page in 2016. Barr has been careful about setting expectations for additional indictments or guilty pleas.

"You need strong evidence of intent, it seems to me, before you can charge that kind of crime so developing that evidence is a time consuming process. Most of the people who are mouthing off about 'well why aren't these people already indicted,' they don't understand the criminal justice process. People get lawyers, sometimes they won't talk to you. Even if they talk to you they'll say they'll take the fifth and you have to get documents and frequently fight over documents and fight over things in court so the investigation is a cumbersome process. It's not something that can be done quickly," he continued.

Issues of cooperation can delay any investigation, but the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic also temporarily halted the ability for Durham to convene grand juries earlier this year. In addition, previous and lengthy investigations from DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz and Special Counsel Robert Mueller presented investigative conflicts, pushing back the Durham timeline.

"The other thing that people sometimes forget is that, you know, they may have in their own mind some thing that they think can be indicted but there are a lot of different allegations that have been made. A lot of people have sort of picked apart this and have come up with various theories. Part of what Durham has to do is sort of chase all of those down. That takes time. He didn't really get going until May or so [2019]. And then hired up people and started getting going. People forget that he didn't get access to the Horowitz stuff until December," Barr said. "When I hear people on TV saying, 'well we've had four years why nothing?' We haven't had four years. The first two years of the administration nothing was done at all. It was all investigating Trump and then Mueller went half of the way into the next year."

US Trials For AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine On Hold Amid Probe Into "Serious Side Effect"

Following AstraZeneca's weekend announcement that it had received the go-ahead to restart Phase 3 testing for its COVID-19 vaccine being developed in partnership with Oxford, Reuters has just reported that the trial remains on hold in the US pending an investigation into a serious side effect in the UK trials - even as other trials elsewhere have already resumed.

It's the latest blow to confidence in the company' s vaccine effort, which until now had until recently been considered one of the world's most promising partnerships, being among an elite group that was the first to make it to Phase 3 trials.

In its report, Reuters said a "serious side-effect" had piqued regulators interest. AZ caused a stir last week when it revealed that its trials had been put on hold after one patient came down with symptoms of a rare spinal inflammatory disorder called transverse myelitis, but on Saturday the company announced that trials would continue.

CHICAGO, Sept 14 (Reuters) - AstraZeneca's AZN.L COVID-19 vaccine trial remains on hold in the United States pending a U.S. investigation into a serious side effect in Britain even as other trials of the vaccine resume, sources familiar with the details told Reuters.

AstraZeneca on Saturday said it had restarted its trial in Britain after regulators completed their review of a serious side effect in one trial participant there.

This was the first indication that the U.S. trial will remain on hold until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a safety panel investigate the case.

Enrollment in the company's global trials of the vaccine, which it is developing with researchers at Oxford University, was put on pause on Sept. 6.

Sources told Reuters that enrollment of new patients and other trial procedures for the pivotal U.S. trial were being rescheduled until at least midweek and that it was not clear how long it would take for the FDA to complete its probe.

Governments around the world are desperate for a vaccine to help end the pandemic, which has caused more than 900,000 deaths and global economic turmoil. The World Health Organization (WHO) had flagged AstraZeneca's as the most promising. A prolonged delay in the U.S. trial could slow access to the vaccine in the United States.

The British adverse event involved a study patient thought to be suffering a rare spinal inflammatory disorder called transverse myelitis.

The reaction in the market was surprisingly muted, considering that the "prolonged delay" - as Reuters put it - "could slow access to the vaccine in the United States."

An AZ spokeswoman declined to comment on the news, but said it "will continue to work with health authorities across the world, including the FDA, and be guided as to when other clinical trials can resume." Trials in Brazil, South Africa and India appear to be continuing on, which means they may still produce experimental data that the FDA could use toward an eventual emergency approval. But at this point, with the coronavirus global death toll now topping 900,000, the urgency is intensifying, and any delays for the top candidates are deeply problematic.

The study outlines how the most documented cases of this phenomenon is with the hepatitis b vaccine, and goes on to hypothesize reasons for why this is happening, and also makes suggestions for solving the problem but, again, the reason why so many people simply don’t respond to vaccines is simply unknown and needs to be studied more.

The 2-10% figure given by this paper is for healthy individuals, it’s also important to bring up the matter of immunocompromised people who have weakened immune systems. These people have a harder time of fighting infections the way healthy people do.

Immunocompromised children have weakened immune systems that prevent them from optimally fighting infections on their own. Consequently, they may be at increased risk of complications from infectious diseases as well as routine vaccinations.

Daimler to pay $1.5bn over emissions cheat claims in US

German carmaker Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, has agreed to pay $1.5bn (£1.2bn) to resolve US government claims that it designed its diesel vehicles to cheat air pollution tests. The firm was investigated for installing software to evade emissions laws in 250,000 Mercedes cars and vans. US officials said they hoped the fine would deter future misbehaviour.

Daimler called the deal an "important step" towards resolving diesel proceedings but denied the claims. "By resolving these proceedings, Daimler avoids lengthy court actions with respective legal and financial risks," the company said. In addition to the $1.5bn settlement with US authorities, Daimler said it had agreed to pay $700m to settle a class action lawsuit brought by owners. It also disclosed "further expenses of a mid three-digit-million EUR amount to fulfil requirements of the settlements." The deals, which Daimler had said it was nearing last month, conclude an investigation that the US started in 2016, after "defeat devices" were discovered through testing.

Officials said that an $875m fine included in the $1.5bn settlement with authorities is the second-largest civil penalty the US has ever imposed under its Clear Air Act and the largest if measured on a per-vehicle basis. Daimler has also agreed to fix the affected cars, which were sold between 2009 and 2016, at no cost to their owners. US officials said that commitment was worth about $400m. At a press conference on Monday, Andrew Wheeler, the head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, said: "The message we are sending today is clear: We will enforce the law.

"If you try to cheat the system and mislead the public, you will be caught. Those who violate public trust in pursuit of profits will forfeit both." The penalties are the latest in a wide-ranging scandal that has cast a cloud over the motor industry since 2015, when Volkswagen admitted to installing secret software on vehicles sold in the US.

The system allowed the cars to emit up to 40 times legally permitted emissions and evade detection during tests.

Volkswagen later admitted the devices affected more than 11 million vehicles globally. The company more than $20bn to resolve claims in the US alone.

But investigations soon widened to other companies, including Ford, Mitsubishi, and Nissan. In 2018, Daimler recalled more than 700,000 vehicles in Europe that had "defeat devices" installed. BMW and Porsche have also recalled cars over the issue.

Fiat Chrysler in Europe were raided this summer over the matter. The firm agreed to an estimated $800m settlement to resolve civil claims in the US in January.

Daimler said the US settlement concerned vehicles that were not sold in the same configurations in Europe.

LINN COUNTY, Ore. – The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after several suspicious fires sparked up Monday morning.

Sheriff Jim Yon said deputies and fire personnel responded to eight different small fires. He said the fires began early in the morning at about 2:45 a.m.

The fires were in the areas of Scott Mountain Road west of Sweet Home, Whiskey Butte Drive east of Sweet Home and Washburn Heights Drive outside of Brownsville.

All of the fires happened within a two-hour period.

Yon said a pickup truck was seen in the area of one of the fires. It’s described as a small white or silver 1990s Nissan Hard body with a black canopy. It is a vehicle of interest, and deputies are actively looking for it.

The fires are under investigation. Anyone with information should call 541-812-2260.

Trump adviser gets into testy exchange with CNN's Jake Tapper, accuses network of not being honest with the American people. So Tapper cuts off the interview.

Got nasty quickly

CNN's Jake Tapper cut off a Sunday interview with White House trade adviser Peter Navarro after Navarro accused the network of lying to the American people.

Navarro appeared on "State of the Union" where he accused Tapper and CNN of not being forthright in reporting.

At one point during the exchange, Tapper said, "Let's [talk about] revelations from Bob Woodward's book. ... I want you to take a listen to what President Trump told Woodward in private on Feb. 7."

The clip in question featured Trump speaking to Woodward about COVID-19.

"He's stating that the coronavirus is five times deadlier than the regular influenza," Tapper said of the president's remarks. "Now here's what [the president] was saying publicly two weeks later."

He went on to play a clip of a conversation between Trump and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's senior medical correspondent, in which the president said, "The flu is much higher than that," referring to a fatality ratio when compared to COVID-19 infections.

'He was misleading the American people'

"He was misleading the American people," Tapper said. "Why?"

Navarro responded, "Give me a minute to walk through the timeline, because I think this is really important."

He continued, "On Jan. 31, that was basically the starting gun to fight this virus that came in from the Chinese Communist Party. Let's not forget where this started. And that was a signal from this president that this is a serious, serious matter. He's taking down flights from China. He was called a xenophobe and a racist by Joe Biden, who later had to apologize."

Tapper interrupted and said that Biden never said those things about Trump and never issued an apology for the remarks. A Biden spokesperson in May said that Biden never called the president racist or xenophobic over the move to ban flights, nor did he issue an apology for the remarks.

Navarro continued, "So, Jan. 31, pulls down the flights, saves probably hundreds of thousands of American lives. ... In that first week of February, leading up to Feb. 7, we here at the White House started a strategy. It basically was, hope for the best, prepare for the worst, stay calm, and begin to attack this virus from China on four different vectors. PPE, therapeutics, vaccines."

"I'm not giving you 10 minutes to do this," Tapper warned.

An exasperated-sounding Navarro added that Trump spoke to Woodward on Feb. 7.

Man stomped on during police arrest in Melbourne's north in induced coma, lawyer says

A man is in an induced coma in a Melbourne hospital after his head was stomped on by a police officer as he was arrested on Sunday afternoon, his lawyer says.

Robinson and Gill principal lawyer Jeremy King, who is representing the arrested man, said his client had not committed a crime and was being treated for mental health issues at the time of the arrest.

"Really he's a person that the police should be dealing with in a very unique way," he said.

"They should be recognising that he's a vulnerable person and this isn't a situation … where police are pursuing an offender."

Mr King said information on the injuries his client had suffered, and how, was "limited", but he was in an induced coma at the Northern Hospital.

Doctors were running scans to work out how much damage had been done, he said.

Man's family in 'deep distress' over injuries

Mr King said video of the arrest, including another video which showed the man being hit by a police car, was "sickening to watch".

"I would be fairly confident to say that in the Victoria Police manual regarding their approved tactics, you're not allowed to ram somebody with a vehicle and you're certainly not allowed to stomp on their head," he said.

Further footage of the arrest showed the man running from police and striking a police car before officers appeared to use a car to knock him over.

As Indiana cannibalism case begins, attorney says evidence resembles 'a horror movie'

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — On the anniversary of the day Tammy Jo Blanton was found butchered in her bathtub, the trial began for the man accused of killing her and consuming her flesh. “Six years ago that lady met a fate that’s very difficult to describe," Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said Friday in opening remarks. "And she met that fate at the hands of this man, Joseph Oberhansley.” He warned the jurors that photos and evidence they'd see during the trial would be "worse than anything you would see in a horror movie.” Defense attorney Bart Betteau asked jurors to be wary of "emotional evidence" that wasn't relevant to the facts. Oberhansley had been Blanton's boyfriend, and he was found at her Jeffersonville home on the day of her death. That's where officers found her dismembered body in the tub, covered with a tent, after receiving a call from co-workers concerned because she hadn't shown up for work. Oberhansley admitted to killing her, according to court records and Mull's opening statement, before eating several of her organs.

Blanton, who was 46, had called the Jeffersonville Police just before 3 a.m. that day and reported that Oberhansley was trying to break in. Officers found Oberhansley at the home that night and made him leave, but Mull said he returned later, parking his car several blocks away to avoid being seen as he made his way back to the house. He was charged with murder, burglary, abuse of a corpse and rape and faces life in prison if convicted. The jury was brought in from Allen County, in northwest Indiana, because the case has been highly publicized. Witnesses who testified Friday included two officers who responded to Blanton's home early that morning, along with the 911 dispatcher who fielded her call; and Sabrina Hall, a co-worker and friend of Blanton's who tried to contact her that morning. It was Hall who called police after a man she believes was Oberhansley answered the phone. Time moved "super fast and super slow at the same time" that morning, Hall said, as she waited for police to confirm what she believed had happened.

Oberhansley's case has taken several twists in the years leading up to Friday's opening statements and testimonies. He was deemed unfit to stand trial in late 2017 and was taken to Indiana's Logansport State Hospital for more than a year before he was deemed competent in November 2018. Oberhansley later rejected an insanity defense his attorneys had promoted in 2019, saying he believed it would admit guilt and be unlikely to work. The case had its day in Clark County Circuit Court in August 2019, but a mistrial was declared after a witness spoke about Oberhansley's criminal history. Oberhansley previously served 12 years at a Utah prison in a manslaughter case in which he killed the mother of his son before turning the gun on himself. A bullet is still lodged in his frontal lobe from that 1998 crime. Mull said witnesses on Monday will include friends and co-workers of Blanton and the officers who investigated the case, as well as an Indiana State Police crime lab DNA expert and the doctor who performed the autopsy.

US President Donald Trump has dismissed a new poll as "fake" after it emerged that more Democrats than Republicans were surveyed.

Trump tweeted an article from the National Pulse website pointing out the small number polled - just 533 - and that 31 per cent of those self-identified as Democrats, compared to 25 per cent who were Republicans.

The Ipsos poll for ABC News said 65 per cent of respondents disapproved of Trump's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The article also pointed to a July poll for ABC, where 27 per cent more Democrats than Republicans were surveyed.

And it said the poll also neglected to focus on likely voters rather than those who rarely vote.

How ‘Cuties’ Is Fueling the Far Right’s Obsession With Pedophilia

'Cuties,' a French coming-of-age film that was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, had a different kind of response after it was picked up by Netflix.

No foreign film in recent memory has attracted quite as much scrutiny as Netflix’s Cuties. Directed by French-Senegalese filmmaker Maïmouna Doucouré, Cuties, which was a hit when it premiered at Sundance last year, tells the story of an 11-year-old girl, Amy, who strays from her strict conservative and religious Muslim upbringing to join a hip-hop dance troupe. At its essence, Cuties is a coming-of-age narrative and a commentary on social media’s role in sexualizing children, but that was not what the film’s poster — a luridly hued image of made-up prepubescent girls, pouting at the camera and crouching in various suggestive poses — suggested.

Many correctly pointed out that the poster was inappropriate; those who had seen the film also correctly pointed out that it was a misleading and offensive image to market what was actually a sensitive portrait of female adolescence by a gifted woman of color. Many more people still, incorrectly, suggested that Cuties and its accompanying marketing materials were evidence of an underage child sex trafficking cabal in Hollywood.

It was the kind of wild-eyed, hysterical allegation that, in previous years, would have primarily been promoted on fringe message boards and in Facebook posts authored by crackpot aunts, only to quietly wither on the vine. Yet this was not the trajectory of the Cuties debacle. In September, the film finally premiered on Netflix, giving people on the internet a chance to actually see it and weigh its merits for themselves. Mainstream public figures and organizations purported to be outraged by the film. In a letter, Sen. Ted Cruz called for the Department of Justice to investigate Netflix and Cuties; Sen. Tulsi Gabbard tweeted on Friday that the film “will certainly whet the appetite of pedophiles and help fuel the child sex-trafficking trade.”

Such accusations ended up fueling the discourse that Cuties was not a commentary on childhood sexualization, but a vehicle for childhood sexualization itself, to the degree that its defenders, including the New Yorker‘s Richard Brody and Rolling Stone‘s own David Fear, were subject to intense harassment on social media. Ultimately, the discourse surrounding Cuties not only drifted from the fringes into the mainstream, it was also framed entirely as entirely apolitical, powered by little more than a stark moral imperative to oppose child sexual exploitation. In the hands of the film’s detractors, the discourse surrounding Cuties morphed from that of a complex film addressing faith, race, and sexuality, to a war between two opposing groups, one with obvious moral leverage over the other: those who support child sexual exploitation, and those who do not.

Accusing leftists of pedophilia has become the latest rhetorical cudgel among those on the far right. The tactic has its roots in conspiracy theorist circles, such as the QAnon community, which is centered on the belief that a shadowy cabal of prominent left-leaning celebrities, such as Tom Hanks and Chrissy Teigen, are involved in a child sex trafficking and baby-eating ring. As Rolling Stone has previously reported, QAnon has become increasingly mainstream in recent months, thanks to the explosive popularity of the #SaveTheChildren movement on Facebook and Instagram, as well as the success of a child trafficking conspiracy theory centered on the furniture brand Wayfair a few months prior. And much of the apoplectic discussion surrounding Cuties was, indeed, clearly driven by conspiracy theorists.

But the politicization of this discourse is not restricted to fringe circles. In May, Donald Trump, Jr. posted a photo of former Vice President Joe Biden with the caption, “See ya later, alligator,” next to a photo of an alligator responding, “In a while, pedophile.” The post garnered more than 181,000 likes; Trump, Jr. later attempted to claim that he was joking, yet also appeared to double down, tweeting, “If the media doesn’t want people mocking & making jokes about how creepy Joe is, then maybe he should stop the unwanted touching & keep his hands to himself.” (It goes without saying that Trump, Jr., in promoting the baseless claims about Biden, made little mention of the more than two dozen sexual misconduct allegations against his own father.)

Russian fighters Su-27 and Su-30 were scrambled to intercept three US Air Force bombers over the Black Sea, no violation of the Russian border was allowed, the Russian Defence Ministry's National Defense Control Centre (NDCC) said on Monday.

"Radar reconnaissance of the Southern Military District's air defence forces detected three air targets approaching the Russian state border from Ukraine over the Black Sea. To identify the detected air targets and prevent violation of the Russian state border, two Su-27 fighters and two Su-30 fighters were from the Southern Military District's air defence forces on duty were scrambled", the statement says.

The crews of the Russian fighters identified the air targets as three strategic bombers B-52H of the US Air Force and escorted them over the Black Sea. After the removal of US aircraft from the Russian state border, the fighters returned to their home airfields.

The Russian Armed Forces detected 41 foreign jets that were engaged in reconnaissance activities close to Russia’s airspace last week, the military’s official newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda reported on Friday.

A weekly infographic published by the outlet showed that Russian fighter jets had been scrambled eight times to intercept foreign aircraft.

The claim that Joe Biden has been accused of child molestation has blossomed over the summer, flourishing in darker corners of the internet but also trickling into the mainstream, as demonstrated not only by Trump Jr.’s vile posts but by the discourse surrounding Cuties. And during a rally in Portland, Oregon last week, in which far-right Proud Boys were captured on camera beating BLM protesters, a man is heard jeering: “Another Joe Biden pedophile right here. He’ll touch another little boy like that,” to a naked man who is being sprayed with a fire extinguisher. The far-right’s quest to ferret out this secret cabal of pedophiles has resulted in not just online harassment and finger-pointing, as was the case with Cuties, but in real-world violence: in Texas, for instance, a QAnon supporter was recently arrested for using her car to attack two strangers she mistakenly believed to be child molesters.

Accusations of pedophilia are “not new,” says Angelo Carusone, president and CEO of Media Matters for America, a nonprofit watchdog organization focused on right-wing media. The tactic has an extensive history that traces all the way back to medieval anti-Semitic allegations of blood libel to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, in which parents en masse accused day care centers and teachers of engaging in ritualized Satanic sexual abuse. “It happens oftentimes when there’s a lot of sweeping change happening in society,” says Carusone, drawing parallels to the tumult of the Reagan years as having set the stage for the Satanic panic.

The media also plays a central role in perpetuating the hysteria cycle off which phenomena like the Satanic panic feed, says Carusone; this was also the case with Cuties and similar controversies such as the outrage generated by a Trolls doll accused by conspiracy theorists of promoting child grooming, both of which were covered fairly uncritically by many news outlets. Newsweek, for instance, dutifully wrote up a statement from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation decrying Cuties, without noting the organization’s roots as a religious right-wing group.

As the Cuties debacle and the Biden allegations demonstrate, one of the major differences between the Satanic panic and the current age of hysteria is that pedophilia allegations are being utilized in a hyper-specific and politicized way. “It actually became an arrow in the quiver and a tool to use against political opponents in a much more explicit way following the 1980s,” he says. “[And] that is complicated by social media….it’s a new twist on the tactic borne out of the aftermath of the Satanic Panic that has become part of our mainstream political discourse, and that is really terrifying.” (It’s also worth noting that pedophilia allegations are a fairly common tactic used to discredit political enemies of the Putin regime in Russia.)

As a rhetorical tactic, the effect of calling someone a pedophile cannot be overestimated: Much like conspiracy theories themselves, whose power lies in the fact that they can neither be proven nor disproven, there is virtually no way to determine whether someone is, in fact, sexually attracted to children. There may be no evidence to support the fact that a former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is involved in an underage child sex trafficking ring, but there is also no evidence to refute it, only adding fuel to those who cannot be swayed either way. Worse still, there are no effective defenses against such vile allegations; to defend oneself against the accusation of pedophilia, or to point out the hysterical nature of such baseless claims is to invite accusations of attempting to normalize it.

Real-life allegations of child sex rings, such as the Jeffrey Epstein case, only serve to bolster the argument that such evil is widespread, and patriots must take it upon themselves to ferret it out from the shadows. “Epstein added fuel to the fire, and it made it much more explicitly political and partisan,” says Carusone. “It allowed for [the far-right] to say, ‘look at all these Democrats, he was a donor, oh and by the way so was Weinstein.'”

The politically charged nature of the discussion surrounding Cuties has made it impossible to wade into any dialogue on the film without being perceived as taking a “side” on the issue one way or the other. Indeed, when I reached out to various organizations that address child sexual abuse and exploitation for this piece, most declined to comment. “Because of the political/politicized nature of this issue, we don’t feel that we can comment,” a spokesperson for one of these organizations told me, underscoring the highly precarious nature of the current discourse.

Against the backdrop of a once-in-a-century health crisis and a movement of marginalized people calling for massive social change, with the world shifting beneath our feet, it’s understandable the #SaveTheChildren mentality would thrive during the pandemic. “Today you have a very large number of disempowered people all across the political spectrum, but especially on the right because you feel like you are constantly maligned. They’re feeling not just powerless, but vilified,” says Carusone. “Think about how awesome it feels to go up to somebody like Tom Hanks or Chrissy Teigen or big brands like Wayfair and just with a couple tweets have them running and scrambling. That just feels good.” In this context, calling someone a pedophile is the far-right equivalent of a rejected teenage boy calling a girl a slut: a way for people on the right to reclaim power at a moment when they feel it rapidly slipping away, while also retaining a moral high ground.

Child sexual abuse is real and horrifying, and it is all too rampant in our culture: according to statistics from the Rape and Incest National Network (RAINN), one in nine girls and one in 53 boys is subject to child sexual abuse before the age of 18. Yet the assailants are, more often than not, neither beloved A-list Hollywood actor/directors nor former Vice Presidents. They are not shadowy traffickers or kidnappers or any of the other figures of stranger-danger myth. They are fathers, uncles, grandfathers and cousins; they are coaches, neighbors, teachers, and trusted authority figures who tend to have unquestioned access to the victims in question.

“What we actually know is that not unlike other forms of abuse and exploitation, kids who are trafficked are most likely to know the individuals trafficking them,” says Teresa Huizar, executive director of the National Children’s Alliance. “They’re not strangers to them or far-flung figures.” Many child victims of sex trafficking are trafficked by their own parents, for drugs or money; others are runaways who have fled home due to unsafe conditions, or LGBTQ kids who have been kicked out by their parents.

This is in part why child sexual abuse is such a heartbreaking and insidious issue: the dominant cultural narratives dictating who the perpetrators are are woefully misleading. It’s unhelpful when people keep bringing up rare or unlikely or completely imaginary events” such as child sex trafficking rings, “instead of focusing on what we actually know about these kids in cases and how these situations arise,” says Huizar. By using the term “pedophile” as a cudgel to bash in the skulls of their ideological opponents, people on the right are taking attention away from actual children being abused, an issue that is often much closer to home than anyone would care to imagine. “It’s galling to see this recent explosion of people who suddenly care about pedophilia and child sexual abuse as long as it suits their political agenda,” a survivor of child sexual abuse, who asked to remain anonymous, told me. “That anyone would opt for this deranged delusion before taking accountability for their own households and communities wounds me every day.”

In decrying the supposed evils of cancel culture, those on the right are fond of pointing out that, once one is labeled a racist or a misogynist or a homophobe, one has little recourse to defend oneself against such allegations; the label clings to the accused whether it is merited or not. Being labeled a racist on social media may be painful for the accused, but it is not life-ending. Yet being branded a promoter of or complicit in heinous crimes such as child sexual exploitation, as Doucouré and even her defenders were, is far more insidious and difficult to combat, not only because it is illegal, but also because it is a crime that is, at least in theory, bipartisan in its horrors; everyone, regardless of political affiliation, can agree that you are a monster, and anyone who dares to question the narrative is also immediately rendered suspect.

The tragic irony is that in focusing so heavily on Cuties and other accused purveyors of child sexual exploitation, those on the right have virtually ignored the actual harm being done to children in their own homes, an epidemic that requires even more attention now that caretakers are stuck at home with their children and domestic abuse rates worldwide are rising. The discourse surrounding Cuties “has been a distraction at best and a complete disservice at worst” to those doing the work trying to help survivors of child trafficking, says Huizar. But clearly, it is far easier for people to trade in fever dreams of imagined demons than to grapple with the reality of a demon lurking in your own home. It is much easier to pin the blame on leftist boogeymen — Joe Biden, Tom Hanks, a young French film director — than to deal with the actual monsters in your midst.

“I always wondered when the nation would scream about the myriad ways in which children are hurt and abused like I was,” says the anonymous sexual-abuse survivor. “I am instead met with a dark, distorted version of that very cry for justice.”

"The Postal Service last month abruptly ordered its police officers to stop investigating mail theft that occurs away from post office property, the Postal Police Officers Association alleged Monday, suing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to block a change they say could erode the safety of mail carriers and delivery.

Per the lawsuit, a senior Postal Service Deputy Chief Inspector Craig Goldberg first raised the notion that postal police officers may not be legally permitted to exercise law enforcement authority away from USPS real estate in February. But the union said the agency "routinely" continued to send out postal police to investigate matters off of USPS property.

But that changed last month when Deputy Chief Inspector David Bowers issued an Aug. 25 "National Communication to all Inspection Service Divisions."

"According to Bowers, Postal Police Officers no longer had any law-enforcement authority, whatsoever, except when they are physically stationed on real estate owned or leased by the Postal Service," the union described. "Accordingly, Bowers directed that PPOs immediately cease and desist from any and all law-enforcement activity except within postal facilities."

The English department at the University of Chicago announced that it will be accepting only graduate student applicants who are interested in pursuing Black Studies in the upcoming admissions cycle.

In a faculty statement posted on the department's website in July, the English department expressed remorse about the university's role in perpetuating inequality and committed to emphasizing and amplifying black voices more strongly. From a highlighted portion of the statement:

The English department at the University of Chicago believes that Black Lives Matter, and that the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Rayshard Brooks matter, as do thousands of others named and unnamed who have been subject to police violence. As literary scholars, we attend to the histories, atmospheres, and scenes of anti-Black racism and racial violence in the United States and across the world. We are committed to the struggle of Black and Indigenous people, and all racialized and dispossessed people, against inequality and brutality.

They and several businesses said their constitutional rights were violated. The counties were in the “red” phase when they filed the lawsuit in May, saying the restrictions on businesses and gathering limits were unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge William Stickman IV, an appointee of President Donald Trump, sided with the plaintiffs. Stickman wrote in his ruling that the Wolf administration’s pandemic policies have been overreaching, arbitrary and violated citizens’ constitutional rights. The Trump administration moved to block substantially more imports from the Xinjiang region of China, where approximately 1 million Uighur Muslims are forced to manufacture goods in “concentration camps,” according to homeland security officials. Ken Cuccinelli, who performs the duties of Department of Homeland Security deputy secretary, told reporters in a press call Monday afternoon that Customs and Border Protection officers who screen imports at ports of entry will block items made at any of five locations in China. The Chinese government claims the sites are vocational skills and training centers or workplace facilities.

“This is not a vocational center. It is a concentration camp — a place where religious and ethnic minorities are subject to abuse and forced to work in heinous conditions with no recourse and no freedom,” said Cuccinelli. “This is modern-day slavery. President Trump has been very clear: This administration will not tolerate the egregious human rights violations that are taking place in China.” “Illicit, inhumane, and exploitative practices of modern-day slavery will not be tolerated in the U.S. supply chain,” said acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan. “For those people and entities who traffic in these despicable practices, know that every CBP officer who reviews cargo information is looking to keep these products out of the United States economy.”

To date, in fiscal 2020, which began last October, the U.S. has imposed a dozen bans on imported goods, including eight against Chinese entities. David Legates, a professor of climatology at the University of Delaware who has spent years rejecting the scientific consensus that human activity is causing climate change, confirmed with NPR this weekend that he was hired as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's deputy assistant secretary of commerce for observation and prediction.

NPR says that this suggests Legates will directly report to Neil Jacobs, the acting head of the agency. Legates would not respond to questions about his new role or specific responsibilities.

NOAA oversees climate research and forecasting. In 2007, Legates co-authored a paper that questioned findings about the role of climate change in destroying polar bear habitats; this research was partially funded by grants from ExxonMobil, the American Petroleum Institute lobbying group, and Koch Industries, InsideClimate News reports. He was also in a video promoting the discredited theory that the sun caused global warming.

NPR notes that Legates is affiliated with the Heartland Institute think tank, which is partly funded by the fossil fuel industry and tries to persuade the public that climate change isn't real and evidence provided by the NOAA and other scientific agencies isn't trustworthy. The Biden campaign has been quietly building a massive "election protection program," including former Attorney General Eric Holder and hundreds of other lawyers in preparation for a legal battle in the event of a contested election.

The former vice president’s campaign told Fox News Monday that over the past several months they have created the largest election protection program in presidential campaign history, involving integrated legal, communications and political strategies for what they anticipate to be an unprecedented election.

The strategies, according to the campaign, are being directed to support election jurisdictions in preparing for and administering the vote under what they call “extraordinary conditions” this cycle, voter education to raise awareness of options for in-person and mail-in voting, aggressive responses to vote suppression activities, and robust programs for identifying and countering foreign interference and misinformation from foreign or domestic sources.

The campaign said Bob Bauer has signed on full-time as a senior campaign adviser. He is on leave from the faculty of NYU Law School, and will work on the voter protection program with the campaign’s general counsel, Dana Remus. Bauer served as general counsel to the Obama-Biden campaigns in 2008 and 2012, and co-chair of former President Obama's Presidential Commission on Election Administration.

Remus has oversight of the campaign’s day-to-day legal operations, and will oversee the wide-ranging team of lawyers to address voter protection.

VIRGINIA: "The Leesburg Police Department is investigating an incident of destruction of town property that occurred Friday evening near Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s Leesburg home. Just before 7 p.m. Sept. 11, Leesburg Police dispatchers received a report of 20 to 25 people wearing black masks on the sidewalk in the historic district. The FBI is investigating allegations that celebrity cheerleader Jerry Harris solicited sexually explicit photos and sex from minors, multiple sources told USA TODAY. Agents executed a search warrant Monday afternoon at a home in Naperville, Illinois, as part of that investigation.

"The FBI is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity in the area," Siobhan Johnson, FBI special agent and public affairs officer, told USA TODAY. She declined further comment.

Harris, who gained national prominence when he was featured in Netflix’s "Cheer" docuseries, has not been criminally charged. The 21-year-old could not be reached immediately for comment.

The criminal investigation is based on allegations that were reported separately to police by Varsity Brands, a private company that dominates the cheerleading industry and handles everything from uniform sales to major competitions. In Aug. 1 letters to police in Florida and Texas, Varsity’s chief legal officer, Burton Brillhart, said the company learned of "inappropriate sexual conduct" allegations against Harris and reported the information to authorities as required by law.

"As a result of the recent allegation, we have barred this person from having any affiliation with Varsity Brands or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates, now and in the future," he wrote.

Brillhart included two screenshots in his communication with law enforcement. In one – a Snapchat message – a picture of the upper part of what appears to be Harris’ face is labeled with the message, "Would you ever want to ****". The other screenshot – which is a series of text messages – indicates an exchange that began on Friday, May 3, 2019, when an individual named “jerry harris” wrote, "Hey btw I found a place for us to do stuff it’s actually pretty good haha."

Brillhart’s letters describe Harris as a former employee who was not working for Varsity at the time of the incidents. In May 2019, Harris posted on social media that he was working for the National Cheerleaders Association, a Varsity brand. That summer, he posted photos and videos of himself coaching athletes at NCA camps.

Varsity did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Netflix docuseries follows Texas’ Navarro College cheerleaders in their quest for a national title. “Cheer,” which received six Emmy nominations, was an instant success when it was released in January. Harris became its breakout star, drawing fans for his positive attitude. Throughout the documentary, the Illinois native shouted encouragement from the sidelines at teammates as they practiced difficult skills.

In February, Harris stood on a Dallas stage beside Oprah Winfrey, who handed him her microphone and asked him to pump up the crowd with his signature "mat talk." The same month, he interviewed celebrities on the red carpet of the Oscars for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." In June, he filmed a short video with former Vice President Joe Biden, encouraging young Black voters to turn out on Election Day.

Harris’ Instagram page, which has 1.2 million followers, features partnerships with Cheerios, Starburst and Walmart.

A gunman shot and killed two people and wounded three others in a series of shootings and carjackings that ended in a police chase and suicide, said officials.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Dangelo Dorsey, 29, is suspected of killing two people. TBI Director David Rausch told reporters that after he crashed a stolen car, Dorsey then killed himself, reported The Tennessean.

In one instance, Dorsey allegedly held a couple hostage at gunpoint before taking them to a home in McMinnville and shooting 23-year-old Jordan Stevens in front of his wife, officials told Fox17. He then forced the woman into the vehicle to the interstate, leading to a police chase.

Dorsey ended up crashing the car. He then shot and killed himself, officials said, adding that the female hostage was found safe after the accident.

Stevens’ mother, Michelle Stevens, said her son was on his way to church with his pregnant wife, Aileen, when they were taken hostage.

'Stay tuned': Ron Johnson poised to release interim report on Biden investigation

A top Republican senator said he will soon release an interim report on the investigation he is spearheading into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. "Stay tuned. In about a week, we're going to learn a whole lot more of Vice President Biden's unfitness for office," Sen. Ron Johnson, the chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Senate Republicans have been long seeking information regarding Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian energy company that employed Hunter Biden on its board at the same time his father was serving as vice president with a key role in shaping Ukrainian policy. After the panel voted to authorize a subpoena against Blue Star Strategies, a Burisma Holdings-linked public relations firm, Johnson said in the middle of June that it turned over 2,600 pages of information to the committee. The interim report is set to release less than two months before Election Day, with Biden, the Democratic nominee, consistently ahead of President Trump in national polls.

Democrats have complained that Johnson is running a partisan investigation to damage Biden's election prospects. "It’s going to be hard to work to recover from the wholesale integration of the Senate and White House into the President’s political operation. A long hard slog to rebuild the legitimacy of government," tweeted Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, on Monday. The Trump campaign has used Hunter Biden in a number of electioneering efforts, including in a high-cost ad targeting the younger Biden over his business ties to Ukraine and China. The ad focuses on a 2013 trip the Bidens took to Beijing and uses footage of Hunter Biden's interview with ABC News regarding the controversy as well as photos of the family in China. In the interview, Biden denied anything improper took place on the trip. Trump has also repeated a debunked claim that Biden had made millions of dollars from Ukraine and received $1.5 billion dollars from China despite having limited experience. Fact-checkers say Biden had an investment deal involving the Bank of China, but Trump's repeated figure of $1.5 billion could be exaggerated, although it is unclear by how much due to a lack of disclosures on the deal. There's also been no evidence of the Bidens breaking any laws, though some experts have raised concerns over ethics regarding the entire situation.

In a recent campaign stop to Warren, Michigan, Trump attacked Hunter Biden's ties to foreign countries again as he pushed his "Made in America" initiative. Bridge, a nonprofit news source serving Michigan, reported that Trump made a new accusation regarding Biden, telling potential voters he had played a role in selling a local auto supplier to China to help create jobs overseas. The outlet reported that the company, Henniges Automotive, did play a role in shipping jobs overseas, but it was prior to Hunter Biden's involvement with them. Still, the accusation was quickly picked up by right-wing news site Breitbart and Trump's oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who tweeted "like father, like son," referring to shipping manufacturing jobs overseas. The GOP-led investigation into the Bidens began around the time Democrats pursued an impeachment investigation into Trump, who was accused of pressuring Kyiv to look into the Bidens' activities in the country while leveraging nearly $400 in military aid and a White House meeting. A whistleblower complaint, which raised concerns about Trump pressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to announce an investigation into whether Joe Biden improperly used his position as vice president to pressure Ukraine to fire a top prosecutor to protect his son from an investigation into Burisma, was the focus of the proceedings by the Democrat-controlled House. Trump was impeached by the House on two Ukraine-related charges in December but was acquitted in February by the GOP-led Senate. The Biden campaign has dismissed the investigation as an attempt to "smear" the Democratic nominee.

A US air defense system has reportedly shot down several missiles near the US embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, early on Tuesday morning.

According to a correspondent with the Amman-based Al-Hadath news agency, at least 3 missiles were shot down by air defenses over the US embassy in the Green Zone, a fortified area of central Baghdad.

Video captured nearby shows air raid sirens roaring as the embassy's counter rocket, artillery and mortar (C-RAM) system, modified from the US Navy's Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), engages the incoming targets.

The US diplomatic hub in Iraq has come under increasing attack in 2020, after a US drone strike near Baghdad airport in January killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a central leader in Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces, and Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran's elite Quds Force. The Green Zone was fortified during the US occupation of Iraq between 2003 and 2011, when US forces waged a counterinsurgency war against Iraqi insurgent forces.

Hours earlier on Monday, US convoys transporting military equipment in al-Diwaniyah and Babylon Governorate came under attack by several improvised explosive devices (IEDs), though they caused no casualties, according to a statement given to Al-Noor News by the Iraqi Prime Minister's Security Media Cell.

Exhaustive Pentagon Review Finds No Evidence For NYTimes' "Russian Bounties" Story

There's been huge efforts to validate The New York Times "bombshell" that wasn't — concerning its summer reporting that Russia secretly offered bounties to the Taliban to kill US troops in Afghanistan.

Two months ago the Pentagon vowed to get to the bottom of it, launching a review of all intelligence and sources which might provide corroboration. And now at the end of that investigation Gen. Frank McKenzie, commander of the U.S. Central Command overseeing the war in Afghanistan, says the detailed investigation found no corroboration of the story.

Recall that from the start the whole thing smelled like a dramatic and desperate last ditch effort to revive the failed Russiagate narrative but in a different form. Multiple intelligence agency heads voiced their immediate skepticism in the wake of the claims linked to unnamed intelligence sources in the CIA.

Gen. McKenzie, told NBC News: “It just has not been proved to a level of certainty that satisfies me,” adding that, “We continue to look for that evidence. I just haven’t seen it yet.”

The new NBC report, published Monday, finds further:

A U.S. military official familiar with the intelligence added that after a review of the intelligence around each attack against Americans going back several years, none have been tied to any Russian incentive payments.

The suggestion of a Russian bounty program began, another source directly familiar with the matter said, with a raid by CIA paramilitary officers that captured Taliban documents describing Russian payments.

So there it is: the Pentagon did a detailed examination of each and every attack on American troops going back several years and found nothing.

But it's yet another instance of the initial unchecked and unverified sensationalist claims from deep within the bowels of the Russia-obsessed mainstream going viral. But don't expect for a moment that this new Pentagon finding that essentially 'there simply no evidence!' will receive the same exposure and circulation.

But that's how propaganda is supposed to work after all.

Appeals court sides with Trump over drawdown of immigrant protections

A panel of judges of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a ruling Monday uphold the Trump administration's drawdown of temporary protected status (TPS) designations for a handful of countries, which allow more than 400,000 foreign nationals to live and work in the United States.

The panel lifted an injunction in a case filed by citizens of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti and Sudan and their U.S. citizen children against the Trump administration's management of TPS.

The resolution could also affect TPS holders from Honduras and Nepal, who sued in a separate case that's tied to the main case.

The 2-1 decision showed a stark divide between the two conservative judges on the panel, Trump appointee Ryan Nelson and George W. Bush appointee Consuelo Callahan, and Obama appointee Morgan Christen.

The majority ruled the Trump administration was not subject to the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) in making TPS country designations, and denied that Trump's alleged racial animus played a part in TPS decisions

"While we do not condone the offensive and disparaging nature of the President’s remarks, we find it instructive that these statements occurred primarily in contexts removed from and unrelated to TPS policy or decisions," wrote Callahan in the majority opinion.

In her dissent, Christen agreed with plaintiffs both that administrative procedure was violated in changing TPS policy, and that Trump's personal racial animus played a part in the decisions, as illustrated by his cataloguing of Haiti as a "shithole country."

"Remarkably, the government urges us to interpret the many denigrating comments in the record as descriptions of inferior living conditions in foreign countries, rather than evidence of racial animus. But we cannot sweep aside the words that were actually used, and it would be worse for us to deny their meaning. Some of the statements expressly referred to people, not to places," wrote Christen.

"The President’s statements require no deciphering," she added.

Under Trump, the Department of Homeland Security has acted to eliminate TPS designations, which allow citizens of certain countries to live and work in the United States.

The program was renewed by Democratic and Republican administrations for more than two decades, essentially without changes.

The original lawsuit alleged that the Trump administration violated the APA and acted based on racial animus in eliminating TPS designations for those countries.

Joe Biden Promises Fewer Fires, Floods, and Hurricanes if He Wins in November

On Monday, Democratic nominee Joe Biden condemned President Donald Trump as a “climate arsonist,” predicting that if the president wins reelection in November, America will witness more “hellish” events like fires in the West, flooding in the Midwest, and hurricanes on the East Coast. He effectively promised that if he wins, America will suffer from fewer fires, fewer floods, and fewer hurricanes.

Although Biden excoriated Trump for “ignoring the facts” and “denying reality,” he focused his remarks on the wildfires ravaging California, Oregon, and Washington State — fires exacerbated by bad forest management more than any sort of climate change.

“Meanwhile, Donald Trump warns that integration is threatening our suburbs,” Biden said, referring to Trump’s attack on Biden’s plan to federalize local zoning (which poses a serious threat to local control of neighborhoods in the name of racial integration). “It’s ridiculous. But you know what is actually threatening our suburbs?”

“Wildfires are burning the suburbs in the West, floods are wiping out suburban neighborhoods in the Midwest, hurricanes are imperiling suburban life along our coast,” Biden said. “If we have four more years of Trump’s climate denial, how many suburbs will be burned from wildfires? Antifa is an umbrella term to describe radical left-leaning militant groups that typically confront neo-Nazism and white supremacists at demonstrations.

People associated with Antifa have been present for significant demonstrations and counter-demonstrations over the last three years, sometimes involving brawls and property damage.

Trump and members of his administration have singled out Antifa as being responsible for the violence at protests triggered by the killing of Floyd.

The main question remains where did Antifa and BLM get their funds from?

Little is known about who funds Antifa activists, or how the groups get their resources. Antifa is not a single organization, and therefore, financial details, if any exist, are murky.

But after all many companies decided to step up and publicly support the riots that BLM and Antifa are organizing through America.

Atlas is an advocate for opening up the economy and allowing natural immunities to control the virus. In this, he has many colleagues in the public-health profession who agree with him, including many epidemiologists, virologists, immunologists, and medical doctors, all names frequently covered at AIER. Incredibly, YouTube has taken down the video interview of Scott Atlas for the usual vague reasons about community standards.

Rochester Mayor Fires Police Chief, Suspends Two Top Officials

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren fired the police chief and suspended both her top lawyer and communications director on Monday amid outrage over the March suffocation death of Daniel Prude.

The announcement came during a press conference where Warren said that City Corporation Counsel Tim Curtin and Communications Director Justin Roj would be suspended without pay for 30 days for “failure to act, inform and follow policy procedure.”

Originally, police Chief Le’Ron Singletary was set to remain on the force until the end of the month after he announced his retirement last week.

“This initial look has shown what so many have suspected, that we have a pervasive problem in the Rochester Police Department,” Warren said. “One that views everything through the eyes of the badge and not the citizens we serve.”

“It shows that Mr. Prude’s death was not taken as seriously as it should have been by those who reviewed the case throughout city government at every level, and that it was seemingly viewed by all concerned as an unfortunate set of circumstances, which we all know was not the case.”

According to WHAM-13, Warren is “directing the Office of Public Integrity to investigate whether any city employees, including herself, violated policies or ethical standards in Prude’s death, and she is calling on the U.S. Attorney General’s Office to investigate any possible civil rights violations.”

Additionally, the mayor is also calling for public transparency with criminal investigations involving officers in an effort to “adopt and embrace a robust process driven by an engaged public to bring systemic reform to the Rochester Police Department, City Hall and beyond to remove the pervasive culture of insularity and acceptance from law enforcement.”

In March, officers found Prude running down the street naked and placed him in a hood to prevent him from spitting. He was later held down for an estimated two minutes, and he stopped breathing. He was transported to a hospital, where he was taken off life support a week later.

Feds: Nearly 400K American Victims of Identity Theft Never Notified by IRS

Nearly 400,000 Americans are unknowingly the victims of identity theft, in cases where perpetrators steal their identity to gain employment, because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has yet to notify them, a federal audit reveals.

A report released by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration details 133,864 cases where American children had their identities stolen by perpetrators trying to gain employment, but the parents of those children were never notified by the IRS.

Another nearly 61,000 Americans were not notified last year by the IRS due to “programming errors” after having their identities stolen. As Breitbart News has reported, illegal aliens often steal IDs to fraudulently obtain employment.

Auditors write that because the IRS only notifies repeat identity theft victims once every three years, victims fail to realize that a perpetrator is continuing to use their identity.

The report states:

The IRS did not issue its Employment-Related Identity Theft notice to the parents or legal guardians of 133,864 dependents that the IRS identified as employment identity theft victims in Processing Year 2019. In addition, systemic programming errors prevented the IRS from issuing the notice to 60,872 victims that the IRS identified. [Emphasis added]

Finally, the IRS’s policy to notify repeat victims of employment identity theft every three years may result in many victims not being notified that identity thieves continued to use the victims’ Taxpayer Identification Numbers nearly every year to work. The 75,451 victims that the IRS first notified in Processing Year 2017 were not sent a subsequent notice despite identity thieves using the victims’ Taxpayer Identification Numbers again to gain employment in Processing Years 2018, 2019, or both years. [Emphasis added]

Auditors said they discovered more than 883,000 cases of employment identity theft after reviewing more than a million tax returns from last year. Of those cases, nearly 393,000 victims were not notified by the IRS, including the more than 133,000 children whose parents remain unaware of their child’s stolen identity.

“The IRS’s unwillingness to take any action in an effort to notify parents or legal guardians is problematic because of the impact and damage that theft of a child’s identity can have on future credit and employment history,” the report states, adding:

The IRS is in a unique position to identify this type of child identity theft and provide individuals with the information they need to minimize the impact. However, without notification, parents and legal guardians cannot take the same proactive steps the IRS suggests when an adult’s TIN is identified as being used to fraudulently obtain employment.

Just a few weeks ago, the Minnesota Freedom Fund was struggling. “We were down before all this started,” Steve Boland, a board member, tells TIME. “We did not have the financial resources at that point to pay bails and get people out.”

Now, the money is flowing in at a staggering pace. Following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, protests spread across the U.S. and the Minnesota Freedom Fund went viral. In just the last week they’ve received some 800,000 individual donations amounting to about $31 million, with the deluge prompting them to ask people to send money elsewhere. “It took Paypal 45 minutes to prepare a download today, because it doesn’t usually have to do this many records,” Boland says.

A bail fund is typically a local collective driven by volunteers who work to raise funds to free people incarcerated on bail, as well as to advocate for systemic bail reform. Across the country, these funds are now receiving a huge number of contributions from donors. The Chicago Community Bond Fund and the Peoples City Council Freedom Fund in Los Angeles have both taken in more than $1.5 million. Free Them All For Public Health, in New York, has raised over $700,000 — and has also asked people to stop sending them money.

The donations are a huge boost for nonprofits who were often previously operating on thin margins. But this financial influx is not the end-all solution to get people out of jail — rather, it’s the beginning of the process. Activists can’t simply walk up to a precinct with a check and leave with freed protesters, especially in an era of COVID-19 complications, curfews, and with police resources spread thin. In this climate, some protesters have been held up to 72 hours before their boosters even get a chance to put up bail money. “There’s a lot of protesters who are basically disappearing into these jails,” Tyler Crawford, the director of mass defense at the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), tells TIME.

Beyond donations and protesting, defunding the police and making necessary policy changes will only happen from writing to and calling your local officials.

Small Businesses on Lake Street: Fund put together by Minneapolis teen activists to help the small businesses on the city’s Lake Street thoroughfare recover from looting and property damage.

This has become one of the most prominent bail funds, providing relief to protesters in Minneapolis seeking justice for George Floyd.

Black Visions Collective: Minnesota-based black, trans, and queer-led organization committed to dismantling systems of oppression and violence.

Reclaim the Block: Coalition that advocates for and invests in community-led safety initiatives in Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Mission: “We believe health, safety, and resiliency exist without police of any kind. We organize around policies that strengthen community-led safety initiatives and reduce reliance on police departments.”

Public Goods: Mutual aid fund for the residents of Minneapolis public housing, organized by Defend Glendale & Public Housing Coalition (DGPHC).

Mission: “We are raising money here to buy and distribute cleaning supplies to the over 900 scattered site households in our city, and we need your help! We anticipate costs upwards of 25,000 dollars and we hope you can support us towards this goal. All funds will be used directly towards our COVID-19 Mutual Aid Fund.”

California

Peoples City Council Freedom Fund: Los Angeles-based fund helping to pay for legal support, bail, fines, and court fees for arrested protesters in the city, as well as medical bills and transportation for injured protesters, supplies for field medics, and direct support to L.A.’s Black Lives Matter chapter.

Mission: “As the mayor and city council have sought to increase the LAPD’s budget during a pandemic, and as police around the country continue to kill innocent people of color, we have taken to the street to protest the funding of state sanctioned murder.”

Covid-19 Mutual Aid Network – Los Angeles: A coalition of grassroots organizations in Los Angeles committed to providing aid to the city’s vulnerable populations during COVID-19.

Mission: “We are immediately providing grocery and supply deliveries, and are preparing to expand this to other community support services like running errands, dog walking, childcare, caregiving, and mental health support for those impacted by the pandemic.”

Silicon Valley Democratic Socialists of America Bail Fund: The Oakland/San Jose chapter of DSA is currently allocating donations to a temporary bail fund, as well as a COVID-19 aid fund.

Colorado Freedom Fund: Providing bail relief to protesters and other individuals across the state of Colorado. CFF has also been providing protest updates on its webpage.

WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) – U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad will step down to work on President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, a U.S. official familiar with the matter said on Monday, departing Beijing at a time when the ties between the world's top two economies are at their worst in decades.

Branstad, previously the longest-serving governor of Iowa, a state in the U.S. Farm Belt which helped Trump get elected in 2016, will leave China in early October, the U.S. embassy said in a statement.Sources familiar with the matter cite Branstad's popularity in Iowa, having served there as governor for over two decades, as an asset to Trump. "I suspect the real answer, as usual, is the simplest one: the Trump campaign needs help shoring up Iowa, including making the case to farmers that the President's trade policy has helped them - not an easy sell," said Matthew Goodman, a trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Trump has tested the loyalty of his rural base in Iowa through his trade wars with China and his handling of corn-based ethanol mandates, a core economy for the state. On Saturday, Trump hinted that Branstad might be joining the campaign. In a video posted on Twitter by Iowa senator Joni Ernst, Trump said Branstad would be coming home from China "because he wants to campaign."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a tweet thanked Branstad for his service since being confirmed in May 2017 and said he contributed to rebalancing U.S.-China relations so that it is "results-oriented, reciprocal, and fair." U.S-China relations have been increasingly fraught over multiple issues including U.S. objection to China's new security law in Hong Kong to Beijing's handling of the novel coronavirus pandemic and its territorial ambitions in the South China Sea. Branstad's departure leaves the U.S. mission in Beijing without a confirmed ambassador at such a diplomatically critical time and that gap could last for months even if Trump is re-elected on Nov. 3. The Senate is only scheduled to be in session for about two more weeks before Election Day.

The Chinese foreign ministry has in the past described Branstad, who was instrumental in a so-called Phase One trade deal with China, as an "old friend of the Chinese people". He first forged ties with President Xi Jinping several decades ago when Xi visited Iowa.
