Los Angeles-area authorities worked Tuesday to apprehend a suspected armed carjacker in a standoff amid suspicions he could be connected to the shooting of two sheriff's deputies over the weekend, according to media reports.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told several news outlets that the suspect is not linked to the ambush shooting of two transit deputies in Compton Saturday. However, KNBC-TV reported that multiple law enforcement sources said detectives are increasingly confident the suspect, who led authorities on a car chase Tuesday, is connected.

During the chase, the suspect reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a home in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood.

Australian police accessed Chinese diplomats' emails and messages as part of foreign political interference investigation

Australian police accessed the communications of top Chinese diplomats and named a Chinese consular official in a warrant as part of an investigation into political interference, in the months before a crackdown on Australians in China.

The ABC has uncovered explosive details of the highly sensitive investigation that has privately infuriated the Chinese Government in recent months as the Australia-China relationship has deteriorated into its worst crisis since the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

Search warrants seen by the ABC reveal the Australian Federal Police (AFP) are investigating whether China's Sydney consulate conspired with a New South Wales MP's policy adviser, John Zhisen Zhang, in a plot to infiltrate the Labor Party and influence voters.

The warrants identify Sydney Consul Sun Yantao, who is responsible for managing relations with the Chinese diaspora and pro-Beijing organisations.

Mr Sun was appointed to the Sydney consulate by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, which has been taken over by China's foreign influence agency, the United Front Work Department (UFWD).

In a statement, the Consulate-General in Sydney said accusations it "engaged in infiltration activities are totally baseless and nothing but vicious slanders".

"The Chinese Consulate-General in Sydney is committed to promoting friendly exchanges and pragmatic cooperation in various fields between the Chinese side and New South Wales," the statement said.

"It always observes international law and basic norms of international relations while exercising duties in Australia."

The real story turns out to be far more complicated. In particular, there are two unresolved issues: What did Bush know of his crew members’ fate? And how badly was his plane hit at the moment when he decided to bail out? These are not merely hypothetical: as the pilot, Bush’s decision to ditch the craft would have doomed anyone still on board. Navy regulations dictate that officers who are thought to have abandoned crew members could be court-martialed.

On board with Bush that day were Radioman Second Class John Delaney, situated below in the plane’s belly, and, directly behind Bush, the turret gunner Lieutenant Junior Grade William Gardiner “Ted” White. Bush would claim in an early 1980s interview with author Doug Wead that he had seen at least one parachute leaving the plane.

In 2002 he told the author James Bradley that he had not known the fate of either of his crew members. After Bradley had finished conducting an interview with Bush for his book Flyboys: A True Story of Courage, the former president turned to the author and asked if he had any information on the fate of his two crewmen.

“It still plagues me if I gave those guys enough time to get out,” Bush said.

Bradley would later write in his book: “No one knew exactly what had happened to Ted and John that day, only that both of them died.”

Yet Poppy has offered multiple conflicting versions of the episode. In a letter to his parents following his rescue, Poppy asserted that after the plane was hit, he had ordered his crew members to parachute out. He was uncertain what happened next, he claimed, due to the smoke that filled the cockpit:

They didn’t answer at all, but I looked around and couldn’t see Ted in the turret so I assumed he had gone below to get his chute fastened on.

Another version surfaced in the 1980s, when his staff decided that Bush had previously been too modest and now needed to acknowledge his heroism.

They hooked him up with a writer, Doug Wead, who prepared the book George Bush: Man of Integrity. In that book, which got little attention, Poppy says:

I looked back and saw that my rear gunner [White] was out. He had been machine-gunned to death right where he was.

There also exists a tape of Bush being interviewed by Wead, as part of a set of interviews the author conducted with famous figures, including Jimmy Carter and former Israeli leader Menachem Begin. On that tape, Bush can be heard to refer clearly to White, and to mention that he saw that White was very much in the plane before bailing out:

One of them jumped out and his parachute streamed. They had fighter planes over us and they could see the chute open, and the other one… he was killed in the plane. You can see, [in] a torpedo bomber, the pilot is separate from the crew, but you can look over and see the turret, and he was just slumped over. [Emphasis mine.]

Another claim of Poppy’s would later be challenged: that his plane was effectively crippled. In Looking Forward, a 1988 campaign book co-authored by Bush and campaign staffer Victor Gold, Poppy writes:

The flak was the heaviest I’d ever flown into . . . Suddenly there was a jolt, as if a massive fist had crunched into the belly of the plane. Smoke poured into the cockpit, and I could see flames rippling across the crease of the wing, edging toward the fuel tanks.

Not so, said Chester Mierzejewski, the tail gunner in the plane directly ahead of Bush’s. Mierzejewski came forward to challenge Bush after noticing inconsistencies in public accounts of Bush’s mission that day. He was struck by how all the versions differed from what he saw.

Mierzejewski had the best and most unobstructed view, and could see directly into Bush’s cockpit. A nonpolitical man who had been Bush’s partner in shipboard bridge games, Mierzejewski wrote a personal letter to the vice president in March 1988, stating that his memory of that day was “entirely different” from what Bush had been saying in television interviews.

Bush, an assiduous letter writer, never responded, so Mierzejewski took his story to the New York Post in August 1988. The Post quoted the tail gunner as saying that only Bush himself had bailed out and that Bush’s plane was never on fire.

Pepper, designed by SoftBank Robotics, is the world's first social humanoid robot able to recognize faces and basic human emotions. The robot stands 120 cm (47 inches) uses optical sensors and artificial intelligence to recognize if people are wearing masks.

With JPMorgan and other Wall Street banks requesting employees to return back to the office, where some of these folks spent the summer partying in the Hamptons without masks, it's going to be difficult to enforce mask-wearing, unless policing robots are deployed.

Standoff in Lynwood, California May Be Suspect Linked to Saturday Night’s Shooting of Two Deputies

There are several reports that law enforcement believes the current standoff with a suspect in Lynwood, California may be connected to the shooting of the two Deputies on Saturday night.

NBC reporter Eric Leonard says the search tonight is linked to the shooting on Saturday night.

NBC Los Angeles reported:

Multiple law enforcement sources say detectives in Lynwood are increasingly confident that a suspected carjacker, who led LA County Sheriff’s Department deputies on a high speed chase Tuesday, is connected with last weekend’s attack on two transit patrol deputies who were shot while seated in a patrol car in Compton.

The person being chased was driving a light blue Toyota coupe that crashed in the 3100 block of Carlin Avenue in Lynwood, and the sources said the driver ran from the car into a home or condo nearby.

A city block of homes nearby was being evacuated as members of the LA County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau, its SWAT team, prepared to search homes, apartments, buildings and yards.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva told NBC4’s Angie Crouch in an interview Tuesday that the search was unrelated to the attack on the deputies in Compton, and he repeated that message in other media interviews throughout the day.

Texas Supreme Court blocks Harris Co. Clerk from sending mail-in ballot applications

The Texas Supreme Court has once again blocked Harris County from sending mail-in ballot applications to all its 2.4 million registered voters ahead of the November election.

In a Tuesday order, the Supreme Court granted the Texas attorney general's request to halt the county's effort just before a separate order blocking the mailing was set to expire. The all-Republican court told Harris County to hold off on sending any unsolicited applications for mail-in ballots "until further order" and while the case makes its way through the appeals process.

A state district judge had ruled Friday that the county could move forward with its plan, shooting down the state's claim that Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins was acting outside of his authority by sending out the applications. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose office claimed in court that the mailing of the applications would confuse voters, quickly appealed that ruling to the state's 14th Court of Appeals. Paxton kicked the request up to the Supreme Court after the appeals court declined his request to block the lower court's ruling and instead set an expedited schedule to consider the appeal.

The revealing pictures also paint a picture of the solace offered on the remote island property that featured swimming pools, private bungalows, a helipad and a private boat dock where guests would take a short ATV ride up to the major residence and bungalows where guests would stay.

The billionaire's secret life at his opulent hideaway home - purchased in 1998 for $7.95M - has been shrouded in mystery, despite claims that American politicians, Hollywood stars and world dignitaries including Prince Andrew would visit as his guests.
