Former Theranos Inc. Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Holmes is exploring a “mental disease" defense for her criminal fraud trial, in one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched cases.That possibility was revealed Wednesday when the judge overseeing the case ruled that government prosecutors can examine Holmes. The ruling was in response to the failed blood-testing startup founder’s plan to introduce evidence of “mental disease or defect" or other mental condition “bearing on the issue of guilt," according to the filing.

Holmes may be seeking to introduce the evidence to challenge the requirement that prosecutors prove her intent to do something wrong or illegal.

Holmes intends to use testimony from Mindy Mechanic, a clinical psychologist at California State University at Fullerton, according to the filing. Mechanic is an expert on the psychosocial consequences of trauma, with a focus on violence against women, and often provides expert testimony in cases involving “interpersonal violence," according to her faculty profile on the school’s website.

Barbara McQuade, a former federal prosecutor who now teaches at the University of Michigan law school, said mounting a so-called insanity defense won’t be easy, as the defendant must meet a high standard of proof.

“Contrary to what you may see in the movies, an insanity defense in federal cases is rare and hard to fake," McQuade said in an email. Holmes must show that, at the time she committed the alleged offenses, a severe mental defect made her “unable to appreciate the nature and quality or the wrongfulness of (her) acts."

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Edward J. Davila rejected Holmes’s argument that she shouldn’t have to submit to a psychological examination by government experts. The judge ruled that such an examination is fair given Holmes’s intent to use testimony from Mechanic.

“The court agrees with the government that its experts must be permitted to conduct their own examination of defendant Holmes in order to mount an effective rebuttal," Davila wrote.

Davila also ruled, over Holmes’s objections, that the examination of the former CEO will be videotaped. Holmes’s lawyers argued the recording would “negatively affect the tenor or the interview," according to the ruling.

The arguments over Holmes’s mental state have been argued earlier but behind closed doors and in sealed documents. Davila heard arguments at a closed-door July 8 hearing, disclosed publicly for the first time in Wednesday’s filing.

Holmes and her former boyfriend, ex-Theranos president Ramesh “Sunny" Balwani, are accused of falsely claiming that the company’s devices could perform myriad tests with a single drop of blood and of duping investors and defrauding doctors and patients who trusted the results. Theranos, which attracted the backing of high-profile investors and leading venture capital firms, was valued at $9 billion before unraveling over the alleged fraud.

Davila decided in March that Holmes and Balwani, who were charged together, should face separate trials.

Holmes’s trial was postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic and is now scheduled to start in March in San Jose, California. Balwani’s trial will follow.

Kevin Downey and Lance Wade, lawyers representing Holmes, didn’t immediately respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment. Mechanic didn’t immediately respond to a phone call seeking comment.

Woodward defended his decision not to share the revelation sooner in interviews with The Washington Post and The Associated Press after details from his upcoming book, "Rage," were made public Wednesday. In audio clips from the 18 interviews Woodward conducted with Trump, the president says the coronavirus is highly contagious and "deadly stuff," while admitting he "wanted to always play it down" because he didn't "want to create a panic."

When asked why he didn't share the discrepancies between Trump's private fears about the virus and his public statements minimizing the danger, Woodward told AP he needed time to determine if Trump's statements about COVID-19 were accurate.

"He tells me this, and I’m thinking, 'Wow, that’s interesting, but is it true?'

Trump says things that don’t check out, right?"

Woodward told AP, referring to Trump's habit of stretching or misrepresenting the truth. And he said he had to determine, "What did he know and when did he know it?" borrowing a phrase from his reporting for the Post on the Watergate break-in.

"The biggest problem I had, which is always a problem with Trump, is I didn’t know if it was true," Woodward told the Post.

Trump called "out of the blue" in early February to "unburden himself" about the potential severity of the coronavirus, Woodward told AP.

And Trump's concerns seemed exaggerated at a time when public health officials like Dr. Anthony Fauci were telling Americans the risk of the virus reaching the U.S. was low.

Woodward said it was not until May that he confirmed Trump's statements were based on reliable information, and that at that point the virus was already widespread.

"If I had done the story at that time about what he knew in February, that’s not telling us anything we didn’t know," he told AP.

Woodward told the Post and AP that he believed it was more important for him to provide a broader picture of the Trump administration ahead of the election than to file daily news stories.

"I knew I could tell the second draft of history, and I knew I could tell it before the election," he told the Post.

Woodward told AP the election was "the demarcation line for me."

"Had I decided that my book was coming out on Christmas, the end of this year, that would have been unthinkable," he said.

Woodward told the Post that contrary to some speculation, there was no agreement requiring him to keep the content of the interviews secret until "Rage" publishes Tuesday.

AstraZeneca halting COVID-19 vaccine trial is "one of the safety valves," Dr. Fauci says

The halting of AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine trial is "not uncommon," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said Wednesday. Being alert for potential adverse reactions is part of the process, he explained.

"It's really one of the safety valves that you have on clinical trials such as this," he said on "CBS This Morning." "So it's unfortunate that it happened. Hopefully they'll work it out and be able to proceed along with the remainder of the trial."

AstraZeneca paused its Phase 3 trial on Tuesday after one participant became ill. It was not clear what symptoms the participant had. AstraZeneca is one of three companies currently in the final phase of vaccine trials.

"This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials," AstraZeneca said in a statement.

Fauci said "generally," the adverse event is related to something else, not the vaccine, but those running the trial can't presume that.

"You always make the presumption that it's due directly to the actual vaccine or therapeutic or whatever it is that's in the clinical trial," he said. "That's the reason why when we say we do careful safety types of studies, this is an example of the kind of thing that you do to make sure we're dealing with a product that's safe."

Fauci, who is on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, also stuck by his earlier projection that the safety and effectiveness of a vaccine will be known by the end of the year.

"Likely November, December. Is it possible? Is it conceivable that we could find out earlier, let's say October? Certainly that's possible. I think it's unlikely, but you can't rule it out," he said. "I think the more likely scenario is that we will know by the end of this calendar year and hopefully we'll be able to start vaccinations in earnest as we begin 2021."

President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that a vaccine would be ready ahead of the 2020 presidential election on November 3, despite health experts saying that is unlikely.

Asked about the politicization of the race for a vaccine, Fauci said he hopes and believes the authorization will not be politicized.

"When the decision is made whether or not you're going to give an EUA, which is an emergency use authorization, or even approve the vaccine, there are also advisory boards that you run this by," he said. "There's really a lot of transparency in that, so I do hope and I believe there won't be a politicization of this. It may be a political atmosphere, but I don't think we're going to have a politicization of the actual decisions regarding a vaccine."

Fauci also said there are other "safety valves" throughout the trial process, including "independent data and safety monitoring boards that look at the data intermittently on a regular basis to determine just what the status of the trial is."

Large fire breaks out at Beirut port a month after explosion

BEIRUT — A huge fire broke out Thursday at the Port of Beirut, triggering panic among residents traumatized by last month's massive explosion there that killed and injured thousands of people. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire at the facility, which was decimated by the Aug. 4 explosion when nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate detonated, triggering a shock wave explosion that blasted windows, doors, and walls miles away. A column of black smoke billowed from the port at midday Thursday, with orange flames leaping from the ground. The Lebanese army said the fire is at a warehouse where oil and tires are placed in the duty free zone at the port, adding that fighting the blaze is ongoing and that army helicopters are taking part in the operation. Panicked residents — still struggling to get over last month's catastrophic explosion — cracked open windows and called each other to warn them of the new fire. Local TV stations said the companies that have offices near the port have asked their employees to leave the area. Lebanese troops closed the major road that passes near the port, referring traffic to other areas.

The Aug. 4 explosion killed more than 190 people, injured around 6,500, and damaged thousands of buildings in the Lebanese capital. The sight of another huge fire a month later created panic among residents traumatized by last month's explosion. State-run National News Agency said the fire was at a warehouse where tires are placed. It added that firefighters are dealing with the blaze. Army helicopters were taking part in efforts to extinguish the fire. A video circulating on social media showed workers at the port running away in fear as soon as the fire broke out, a chilling reminder of last month's blast that killed dozens of port employees and 10 firefighters. Beirut Gov. Marwan Abboud and authorities called on people to stay away from roads leading to the port to allow fire engines to move quickly. Police spokesman Col. Joseph Msalam said they have no information about what is happening at the port, adding that the facility is currently under control of the army. Asked about reports that the fire was caused by burning tires and oil, he said: "I don't know. It could be containers. I really don't know what is there." It was the second fire at the port this week. On Tuesday, a small fire erupted, also creating some panic, that was quickly extinguished.

U.S. has charged 57 people in PPP fraud cases, Justice Department says

The Justice Department has charged 57 people since May with trying to steal more than $175 million from the Paycheck Protection Program designed to help Americans during the coronavirus pandemic, a department official said on Thursday.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian Rabbitt said coordinated criminal rings have worked to defraud the program. “The involvement of these rings isn’t surprising, but it is particularly troubling to us here at the department, we will be focusing on these types of cases, going forward,” he said at a news conference.

Readers will remember when we noted this very issue after Lt. Col Alexander Vindman compromised his position yet was not removed by his command structure within the Pentagon.

The onus of action to remove Vindman from the NSC does not just lay simply at the feet of the White House and National Security advisor Robert O’Brien; and upon whose action the removal of Vindman could be positioned as political; the necessary, albeit difficult or perhaps challenging, obligation to remove Lt. Col Vindman also resides purposefully with the Dept. of Defense.

The Pentagon could easily withdraw Vindman from his position at the National Security Council; yet, it does not…. and it has not. WHY?

There is a code within the military whereby you never put your leadership into a position of compromise; ie. “never compromise your leadership”. In this example, President Trump cannot remove Vindman from the White House NSC advisory group due to political ramifications and appearances...

The Joint Chiefs certainly recognize this issue; it is the very type of compromise they are trained to remove. Yet they do nothing to remove the compromise. They do nothing to assist.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman was the majority (#1) source for the material CIA operative Eric Ciaramella used in a collaborative effort to remove President Trump from office. Let me make this implication crystal clear:

The United States Military is collaborating with the CIA to remove a U.S. President from office.

Do you see the issue now?

The Pentagon has done nothing, absolutely nothing, to countermand this implication/reality.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff have done nothing, absolutely nothing, to diminish the appearance of, nor deconstruct the agenda toward, the removal of President Trump.

The manipulations of Democrats to use the COVID-19 issue for political gain are being exposed, one by one. As outraged citizens demand schools, salons, gyms and other businesses re-open, Democrats keep citing the “danger” and “risk” of doing so.

But the public has seen the lies exposed in recent weeks. They seethed as Nancy Pelosi got her hair done while all other S.F. salons were shuttered by law. And private gym owners were enraged when they found out that gyms in California government buildings have been open for months, while theirs have been kept shut tight.

Now on Wednesday, stunning audio surfaced of Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer saying that K-12 schools in America’s largest county likely will not open until after the November election.

Not based on “health,” or “safety.” but pure politics to influence local, congressional and presidential politics.

KFI News radio reporter Steve Gregory said he received a partial audio recording of a conference call between Dr. Ferrer and “a collection of school nurses, school administrators, other education and medical professionals.”

During that discussion, Ferrer indicated that she does not expect schools to reopen before the November election…

“We don’t realistically anticipate that we would be moving to either tier 2 or to reopening K-12 schools at least until after the election, in early November,” Ferrer said. “When we look at the timing of everything, it seems to us a more realistic approach to this would be to think that we’re going to be where we are now until we are done with the election.”

The recording was featured on KFI’s “John and Ken Show,” where the co-hosts of the high-wattage afternoon drive program questioned whether Dr. Ferrer was manipulating the date to influence the Presidential race.

Gregory said he contacted the health department directly after obtaining the audio to inquire when Ferrer said schools would reopen.

“I got a response back that is basically this word salad,” Gregory said. “It’s one big long paragraph of a word salad. It’s not even worth reading because all that it said was, ‘we’re reassessing all of the time, and as soon as we do the in-person learning with the high risk, high needs students, the special needs, we will reassess for everyone else.’ That was their official answer as to when the schools were going to reopen.”

“So the health department official statement does not jive with the health director,” Gregory continued. “What caught my attention on this was that she said election not just once, but she says it twice.”

Rhode Island Governor Power Grab: Groups Cry Foul Over Raimondo’s Extending Emergency Pandemic Powers "Indefinitely"

"Three open-government groups are calling on legislative leaders to rein in what they say is Gov. Gina Raimondo’s attempt to extend her emergency decision-making powers “indefinitely” during the coronavirus pandemic — and beyond what state law allows.

The executive directors of Common Cause Rhode Island, the American Civil Liberties of Rhode Island and the president of the League of Women Voters Rhode Island expressed their concerns in a letter sent Thursday to the leaders of the House and Senate.

The groups say Raimondo signed an executive order last week extending her executive emergency powers — decision-making without the normal opportunity for public input — beyond the time limit state law allows.

Her order “significantly erodes transparency and accountability in executive agencies,” the groups said.

The state’s Administrative Procedures Act (APA) allows executive agencies to adopt emergency regulations for up to 120 days, with the ability to extend them for an additional 60 days.

But Raimondo’s executive order last week suspends that limitation and allows for emergency rules “indefinitely,” the groups say, as long as those rules are related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Writing to House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, the groups said,

“By suspending the APA provision that already sets out the circumstances under which ‘emergency’ rules can be adopted, Governor Raimondo has essentially used a legislative grant of emergency power to seize even more executive emergency power. Doing so offends separation of powers principles and sidesteps the transparency that was deliberately built into the Administrative Procedures Act. ”

The APA ensures “that agencies are not using unbridled and unchecked discretion to effectuate public policy.”

The groups urged the legislative leaders to overturn Raimondo’s executive order when the General Assembly meets again."

The suspect — seen in a Wanted photo wearing a black T-shirt with the iconic skull of the Marvel character The Punisher — hurled one rock at the front window and the other at a southeast side window of the studio on Columbus Avenue near West 66th Street just after noon Wednesday, cops said.

Both rocks were recovered on the scene — one with “F–k U ABC 7” written on it and the other with the message “Whore 666,” police sources said.

The vandal struck during the noon newscast, WABC reported.

The man took off, heading east on West 65th Street, according to the sources.

The Wanted photo was posted to the 20th Precinct Twitter account Wednesday evening and shared by WABC-TV anchor Bill Ritter Thursday morning.

Ritter reported that the same man was seen in a photo and suspected of attacking a WPIX reporter and photographer — as well as destroying equipment — two hours earlier. Cops could not confirm that account Thursday morning.

Louis DeJoy, Postmaster General and CEO of the United States Postal Service (USPS), announced the creation of a joint task force with postal unions, which he said will “enhance” their work with election officials ahead of November’s election.

“I am pleased to announce that the presidents of the four postal unions have agreed to work with the postal service on a joint-leadership task force,” DeJoy announced in a video aimed to ease concerns over mail-in voting and Election Day.

DeJoy said the new partnership, which includes Fredric V. Rolando, President of the National Association of Letter Carriers; Ronnie W. Stutts, President of the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association; Mark Dimondstein, President of the American Postal Workers Union; and Paul V. Hogrogian, President of the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, will effectively “enhance” USPS’s work with election officials and jurisdictions across the nation.

“We will address issues related to voter education and best practices of the stakeholders in administrating mail-in voting for the 2020 election,” he said, noting the impact the Chinese coronavirus has had this year. Nevertheless, USPS is working to “ensure that we fulfill our role in the electoral process and maintain the trust of the American public.”

Rolando said workers are “fully committed” to ensuring that ballots and election mail will be delivered “securely, accurately, and on time,” while Dimondstein assured that USPS “has the ability to process and deliver the high volumes of election mail expected in the coming weeks.”

“The American public can count on the postal service to deliver this year’s election mail,” Hogrogian added.

DeJoy noted many states and localities are expanding options for mail-in voting and said USPS is working to provide resources for voters so they can make informed decisions ahead of Election Day. He also asked voters to remain mindful of their state election rules and to request and return their ballots as early as possible.

“We want to be sure that when you use the mail to vote, your vote will be counted,” he said.

“The volume of election mail may be higher this year, but we’re ready for it,” DeJoy continued, adding Americans can have “great confidence in the 630,000 men and women of the United States Postal Service and in our ability to deliver America’s election mail.”

USPS also stressed the importance of voters being aware of their state’s vote-by-mail deadlines on its website.

“If you choose to vote by mail, it’s your responsibility to understand your local jurisdiction’s requirements for timely submission of completed mail-in ballots, including postmarking requirements,” USPS stressed:

You should also be aware of how long it may take for your ballot to travel through the mail. Some state deadlines may not provide enough time for the Postal Service to deliver a mail-in ballot from the election office to the voter and return the marked ballot from the voter to the election office based on the established time it takes to deliver different types of mail — which is called our “delivery standards,” and which have been in place for many years. Failing to follow the Postal Service’s recommendations will increase the risk that your ballot will not be delivered and returned in time to be counted. Contact your local election officials about ballot submission deadlines and other information that will help ensure your vote is counted.

DeJoy’s announcement comes on the heels of last month’s testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where he assured lawmakers that he remained “extremely, highly confident” that USPS will be able to deliver mail-in ballots in a timely manner. The testimony followed a surge of outrage after USPS warned several states that it may not be able to deliver ballots in a timely manner due to their respective deadlines. High profile Democrats quickly accused DeJoy, Trump, and Republicans in engaging in a scheme to rig the election — an accusation DeJoy adamantly denied.

“There has been no changes to any policies with regard to election mail,” he told the Senate panel last month.

Portland passes unprecedented ban on facial recognition tech, despite $24,000 Amazon lobbying effort to kill initiative

Portland lawmakers unanimously passed a sweeping ban on facial recognition technology, becoming the first city to bar both public and private entities from the controversial software and defeating Amazon’s bid to kill the measure.

The Portland City Council adopted the ban in the form of two separate ordinances on Wednesday. The first will block all city agencies, including the police, from using the tech, while the other prohibits private organizations from deploying facial recognition devices in public places. Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler has hailed the move, saying it sets Portland apart from other cities.

“What makes Portland's legislation stand out from other cities is that we're prohibiting facial recognition technology use by private entities in public accommodations,” Wheeler said following Wednesday’s vote.

This is the first of its kind of legislation in the nation.

While the measure pertaining to government agencies applies immediately, the private ban will come into effect in January. Both laws allow only limited exceptions, permitting facial recognition technology used to unlock smartphones, for example, as well as uses inside Portland public schools. Earlier versions of the ordinances also carved out exemptions for US Customs and Border Protection, however that language was struck from the proposals passed on Wednesday.

Though e-commerce giant Amazon announced a one-year “moratorium” on police use of its facial recognition software in June, calling for governments nationwide to impose “stronger regulations to govern the ethical use” of the tech, the company has fiercely fought Portland’s attempt to do precisely that. Despite its claimed commitment to shelving the technology to await stricter controls, Amazon spent a total of $24,000 on lobbying efforts to fight the city’s ban between last December and June, 30, 2020, public records show.

That’s the latest word from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who on Wednesday signed Executive Order 180, which clarifies mandates on face coverings for organized sports during training, practice and competition.

The new order states that a face covering must be worn at all times by athletes, unless they can maintain 6 feet of social distance.

So those in football, soccer and volleyball — sports that just returned this week — will need to wear face coverings at all times. Cross country, golf and tennis can go without masks, if they can stay apart. Swimmers are the only exception to any coverings.

Whitmer later excluded sports like tennis, golf, cross country and baseball.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that the French president’s critical comments on the standoff in the eastern Mediterranean are a sign “of his own weakness and despair.”

Macron “has again made an arrogant… statement,” the ministry in Ankara said after the French president urged European leaders earlier in the day to stand up to Turkey’s “unacceptable provocations.” He hosted an emergency summit in Corsica with seven leaders of EU countries that border the Mediterranean Sea at a time when Ankara seeks to expand its energy resources and influence in the eastern Mediterranean.

The meeting came amid fears of an open conflict with Turkey stemming from tensions over offshore oil and gas drilling. Ankara has already lashed out at France and the EU for siding with Greece and Cyprus in the dispute.

Ahead of the Med-7 Summit, Macron said that “Turkey is no longer a partner in the Mediterranean region.” He made it clear that the meeting was summoned to clarify “red lines” if a “fruitful dialogue” with Turkey was to restart.

The EU states should avoid an escalation, but that does not mean they should be passive in disputes with Ankara, Macron said. “We must be tough with the Turkish government and not with the Turkish people who deserve more than the Erdogan government,” the French leader was quoted as saying. “All unilateral actions of Turkey, such as the Turkish-Libyan memorandum, without respecting the rights of Greece, are unacceptable.”

Apart from the Foreign Ministry in Ankara, Turkey’s ruling party did not leave Macron’s comments unnoticed either, accusing him of extending his country’s “long history of colonialism.” Omer Celik, spokesman for the Justice and Development (AK) Party, described the French leader’s statement as an “old and immoral game” of colonialists. “They offered a false show of love to exploit the people, but targeted patriotic leaders,” he tweeted.

Ankara has repeatedly said that it is sending out its drill ships to explore for energy on its continental shelf in the Mediterranean, claiming that both Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have rights in the region.

It was no accident that the Med-7 Summit took place in Corsica, as the island is a French stronghold in the Mediterranean. Macron on Thursday did not mention any specific actions he wants European member states to take against Turkey’s moves.

Citigroup is making Wall Street history.

Michael Corbatt, the long-serving CEO of Citigroup who led the bank through most of its post-crisis recovery, will retire in February, and in his stead, the bank has appointed Jane Fraser, who was named the company's president last year, and who will now become the first female head of a major Wall Street bank. Fraser will join the bank's board immediately, it said in a statement, but won't officially take the reins until Corbatt leaves early next year,

Corbatt, who is probably best known to the public for his appearance at last year's Congressional hearing with his fellow Wall Street leaders, said in a statement that "we completed our transformation from the financial crisis and emerged a simpler, safer and stronger institution,” Corbat said in the statement. “There is always more to do and I believe the time is right for my successor to lead Citi through this next stage of progress.”

Fraser has long been seen as a contender for the top job, according to reports published back in October 2019 when she was named president of the international banking giant.

The bank's profitability soared during Corbatt's reign, though that hasn't always been reflected in the share price.

A 16-year veteran at Citi, Fraser first joined the bank to run client strategy in the investment bank, and had been running the bank’s Latin America business, including its Citibanamex division in Mexico, for the past few years before taking over the then-vacant president seat last year.

She has run Citi’s private bank, as well as its troubled mortgage business, and is credited internally with helping the bank recover after the financial crisis, when Citi had to take $45 billion in taxpayer money to survive.

Before joining Citi, Fraser was a consultant at McKinsey.

The Treasury Department said the lawmaker, Andriy Derkach, has been an "active Russian agent" for more than a decade and has close ties to Russian intelligence. Since late 2019, Derkach has "waged a covert influence campaign centered on cultivating false and unsubstantiated narratives concerning U.S. officials in the upcoming 2020 presidential election, spurring corruption investigations in both Ukraine and the U.S. designed to culminate prior to election day," the agency said.

Derkach released edited audio tapes and other unsubstantiated information between May and July that aimed to discredit unnamed U.S. officials, the Trump administration said. The Ukrainian lawmaker has also leveled "unsubstantiated allegations" against other American and international politicians.

In addition to Derkach, the U.S. sanctioned three others with ties to Russia. The three, Artem Lifshits, Anton Andreyev and Darya Aslanova, are employees of the Internet Research Agency, a Russia-based troll farm that spread disinformation on social media as part of the Kremlin's interference operation in 2016.

"Andrii Derkach and other Russian agents employ manipulation and deceit to attempt to influence elections in the United States and elsewhere around the world," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

Senate Republicans have been investigating possible links between Democrats and Ukraine, including possible conflicts of interest between Biden and his son Hunter, and Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company that employed Hunter Biden. But Democrats have pushed back on the probe, saying Republicans are pursuing conspiracy theories peddled by Kremlin proxies and helping to spread Russian disinformation.

Baltimore man charged with human trafficking at Jessup hotel

Howard County police have charged a Baltimore man with human trafficking at an Jessup hotel, the department announced Thursday.

Michael Allen Steadman, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with sex trafficking, police said.

During an undercover operation, Howard police determined prostitution activity was occurring in a hotel in Jessup.

Police believe Steadman provided transportation to and from prostitution appointments for a 26-year-old woman and kept a portion of her money.

The woman was referred to services for assistance after Steadman’s arrest, police said.

Steadman is being held on $10,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center.

Howard police can offer treatment, housing and other help to victims of human trafficking. If someone suspects human trafficking, if they are a victim or know someone who is a victim, they can speak privately to a detective at 911 or 410-313-3200.

WASHINGTON — The Army is in the midst of conducting what Army Futures Command Commander Gen. Mike Murray likes to call “this generation’s digital Louisiana Maneuvers” in the Arizona desert that aims to bring key technologies together designed to fight across air, land, sea, space and cyber.

The famed Louisiana Maneuvers during World War II was designed to figure out how the United States could use its existing technology to fight in a fundamentally different way against the German military airplanes, radios and tanks.

“It was a combination of those three technologies and how the Germans put it together to execute what we call Blitzkrieg" that was “fundamentally different” than any of the capabilities the Allied forces, to include the U.S., brought to the battlefield, Murray told Defense News in an exclusive interview on the Army’s new effort at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona.

In this generation there are three key technologies that when paired together in novel ways can provide a strong advantage against possible conflict with near-peer adversaries, according to Murray. Those technologies are artificial intelligence, autonomy and robotics in the air and on the ground.

“To make those three work in a digital environment, you have to have an underlying robust and resilient network,” Murray said, “and you have to have a data architecture and the data and the talent to put all that together.”

Enter Project Convergence, the Army’s weeks-long “campaign of learning” to bring together the weapons and capabilities it envisions fighting with in the 2030s and beyond in a seamlessly networked environment, according to Murray.

69 Pounds of Meth Seized at Texas Border Crossing

Customs and Border Protection officers assigned to a Texas crossing on September 5 seized 69 pounds of methamphetamine found in a passenger sedan attempting to enter from Mexico.

CBP officers assigned to the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge observed a man driving a 2011 Dodge Avenger approaching from Mexico for entry into the United States. The officers referred the driver to a secondary inspection station where officers utilized a Non-Intrusive Imaging (NII) system to examine the interior of the vehicle, according to information obtained from CBP officials in the Rio Grande Valley.

The NII search resulted in the discovery of 59 packages of drugs hidden in the Avenger. The officers identified the drugs as being methamphetamine and determined the weight to be 69 pounds. Officials estimated the shipment to be worth $1,378,000.

“Our officers’ excellent inspection skills and observation techniques have allowed us to make this exceptional seizure,” Carlos Rodriguez, Port Director, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas said in a written statement. “Smugglers will utilize all kinds of methods in their attempts to bring drugs across the border and it’s up to us to keep up with those trends and help keep our communities safe.”

The officers seized the 69 pounds of methamphetamine and the vehicle. They also arrested the driver, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen and turned the case over to ICE Homeland Security Investigation special agents for further investigation and possible drug smuggling charges.

A few days earlier, CBP officers assigned to the Starr-Camargo International Bridge seized 33 pounds of cocaine in two incidents. The first happened on September 1 when a 38-year-old Mexican male attempted to enter the U.S. while driving a tractor-trailer. A search of the trailer led to the discovery of 12 pounds (30.73) pounds of cocaine.

In the second incident, CBP officers arrested a man driving a 2017 GMC Terrain as he attempted to enter the U.S. while carrying nearly five pounds of cocaine in the vehicle and nearly three pounds of methamphetamine on his person.

Officers estimated the value of these drugs to be approximately $324,000.

“Our officers have seized multiple several narcotics loads these past few days demonstrating their commitment to vigilance and to the service of their country,” said Port Director Imelda Recio, Rio Grande City Port of Entry.

Air Force B-2s 'attack targets' to train for war in Pacific

U.S. Air Force B-2s bombers are finding and attacking targets in the Pacific to ensure combat readiness, adjust to moving enemy formations and coordinate warfare operations with Australian Marines.

Operating with B-2s and B-1B bombers, both U.S. and Australian Joint Tactical Air Controllers “worked alongside Australian Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters and U.S. Marine Corps RQ-21A Blackjacks to identify and surveil simulated targets,” an Air Force report stated.

The exercise is part of a strategic effort to refine, increase and accelerate Bomber Task Force operations throughout the Pacific, according to senior Air Force commanders. The concept is to implement more readiness and combat training activities to move toward a less "static" global force posture.

“We are sustaining a surge in bomber operations. BTFs [Bomber Task Forces] are vital to demonstrate our commitment to peace and stability. We need to be unpredictable and keep potential adversaries off balance. We were too predictable and too inflexible and became imbalanced, placing presence over readiness. We are transitioning to a dynamic force-deployment model,” Maj. Gen. Mark E. Weatherington, commander, Eighth Air Force, and commander, Joint-Global Strike Operations Center, told The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies in a video interview.

A key Democratic staffer was among dozens arrested over the weekend in a series of protests-turned-riots marking the 101st day of unrest in Portland, Oregon, the Washington Free Beacon reports.

“The police arrested Kristina Narayan, who is legislative director for the top Democrat in Oregon’s House of Representatives, along with 58 others during a riot that began Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, according to a Portland Police Bureau report,” the Free Beacon notes. “Narayan has worked for House Speaker Tina Kotek since 2016.”Kotek, according to her statements on social media, has been generally supportive of the ongoing protests in Portland, tweeting back on September 1st that the demonstrations were the result of ongoing “tensions.” She acknowledges that many of the protests have devolved into riots, but seems to blame “provocateurs” who “are looking for a fight and advancing a white supremacist ideology” for inciting destruction and violence in Portland’s downtown and residential neighborhoods.

She also says she believes in “holding individuals accountable” for destructive behavior. In her statement following the death of Aaron Danielson, a Trump-supporter and counter-protester shot by a self-described supporter of “Antifa,” she does suggest holding police officers accountable for “confrontational and violent crowd control tactics.”

Bulk Cash Seizures Surge at U.S. Border in 2020

Throughout Fiscal Year 2020, Breitbart Texas extensively tracked the record-setting Mexican cartel methamphetamine and fentanyl seizures intended to reach into the U.S. One question that remains difficult to answer is the amount of illicit narcotics that were successfully smuggled. One benchmark for law enforcement agencies is seizure data of bulk currency normally traveling south.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) 2019 assessment, drug sales account for tens of billions of dollars in illicit proceeds annually in the United States. The cash-intensive nature requires that all criminal groups involved in the supply lines use bulk cash smuggling. It remains one of the preferred methods to move and launder illicit proceeds.

By monitoring the drug seizures that go north and the bulk cash destined south, the CBP can track trend changes monthly and understand the level of success the Mexican cartels and independent groups are enjoying.

This is where analyzing CBP currency data in FY2020 indicate that sales of narcotics are skyrocketing. At ports of entry, CBP seized $93,302,645 — shattering records for the last five years.

The U.S. Border Patrol separately seized more than $8.7 million between ports of entry.

Inland Border Patrol checkpoints caught $2.1 million.

In FY2020, large bulk cash seizures spiked across all three areas of CBP enforcement efforts. Given the data, and with one month left in the fiscal year, these numbers will only increase.

Judge: Ex-school security guard to pay $3M in sex abuse case

CHICAGO (AP) — A federal judge has ordered a former security guard at a suburban Chicago high school to pay $3 million in damages to the family of a former student who said in a lawsuit that he sexually abused her dozens of times.

The default judgment granted Tuesday by U.S. Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer against Michael Haywood of Evanston awards the student’s family $2 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages, the Pioneer Press reported, citing court records.

A default judgment is issued when a defendant fails to appear in court or enter a plea. According to court documents, Haywood, 35, “failed to appear and answer or otherwise plead.”

The girl’s family filed a lawsuit in August 2019 alleging Haywood “groomed” the Evanston Township High School student in 2018 and 2019 when she was 17 and engaged in “unwanted and unauthorized sexual and other contact” with the teen more than 40 times, including several times at the school.

The family’s civil case against the high school and the city of Evanston is ongoing. The suit also alleges that the school failed to adequately protect girls from purported predators and didn’t fully inform parents of the allegations against Haywood after firing him in January 2019.

Haywood has not been criminally charged in the assaults described in the lawsuit, but he was charged in February 2019 with sexually assaulting a different student in November 2018 who is not involved in the civil suit.

Haywood has pleaded not guilty in that case and is currently on home electronic monitoring, according to court records.

At attorney representing Haywood in the criminal case declined to comment on the civil suit.

Andrew M. Stroth, the attorney representing the teen and her family, declined to comment on the probability of being able to collect $3 million from Haywood, but said he considers the judgment a positive development for the case against the district and city.

Molly Thompson, an attorney for Evanston Township High School District 202, emphasized that the default judgement was issued solely against Haywood and not the other defendants in the lawsuit.

“The Board of Education of Evanston Township High School District 202 and the other defendants, besides Haywood, filed motions to dismiss plaintiffs’ First Amended complaint, which are currently pending,” Thompson said in a statement.

California's controversial Senate Bill 145, which would reduce penalties for sexual relations with minors, passed both legislative houses last week and now sits on the desk of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

According to State Sen. Scott Wiener, who authored the bill, the current law discriminates against the LGBT community.

"Senate Bill 145 is an anti-discrimination law," Wiener told KXTV-TV. He went on to explain that SB 145 would eliminate automatic sex offender registration for adults who have anal or oral sex with a minor. Instead, a judge would make the decision. Also, SB 145 would only apply in cases involving minors between ages 14 and 17 and with an offender within a 10-year age range.

In this episode of "Wilkow," BlazeTV host Andrew Wilkow was joined by journalist Chadwick Moore, a former liberal who once wrote that admitting he was a gay man to his father, "a Republican and a farmer in Iowa," was easier than "coming out as a conservative" in New York.

Wilkow and Moore discussed the far left's push to normalize pedophilia and include sex offenders under the legal protections of the LGBT community.

"It's really sick and dark," Moore said. "These things are coming out in the activist circles and entering the mainstream narrative. [...] You know, this is how the left always operates, with what's called the Overton window. They will put a really insane idea out there just to shift the frame of acceptable public discourse."

"They are masters at using language to change the narrative and change how people view the world," Moore went on to explain. He noted that pedophiles are now calling themselves "Minor Attracted Persons" or "MAPs" and arguing that pedophilia is merely a "sexual orientation" in an attempt to gain acceptance into the LGBT community.

"It's truly baffling and sick and no one will call them out," Moore said.

Concerned citizens on social media are enraged that the mass media is recruiting more children into this dangerous and depraved lifestyle.

Lucas detailed the abuse he received as he was inducted into the satanic LGBT lifestyle by his own mother.

“She took me to a high-end club that was filled with men who were practically nude. They’d have stage shows where the guys would dance promiscuously and strip. A lot of these guys would always say nasty things to me and touch me inappropriately. I didn’t like it, I told my mum yet she didn’t care. She told me to ‘man up’, which I thought was very ironic,” he said.

She even attempted to pimp him out to LGBT predators who they met at these events. A man once approached Lucas’ mother and told her that he would “absolutely love to get to know Lucas a bit better.”

“My mother wanted me to go visit him… ALONE! She told me she’d already set up a date for the two us and said it would be fun. ‘It’s just two queens going shopping and having fun, Lucy. Don’t be such a baby,’ she said. I refused. I cried. I screamed,” Lucas said.

The deranged mother even tried to show Lucas pornographic movies as a way to warp his mind so he would accept her transgender push.

“She even showed me homoerotic films and told me that this was natural. Although it may be, it wasn’t for me. But still, I was old enough to realize what was going on. It made me feel sick,” he added.

Fort Bragg Paratrooper Dies During Airborne Training

An Army paratrooper has died while conducting training operations at Fort Stewart, Georgia, the Army announced Thursday.

The accident took place around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Lt. Col. Mike Burns, spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, told Military.com. The paratrooper, who has not been identified, was assigned to the 82nd's 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Burns did not immediately have additional information on the circumstances of the accident or the status of training. The incident is currently under investigation.

In July, six U.S. paratroopers from Fort Bragg were hurt during training in Grafenwoehr, Germany after drifting off-course during a jump. Three were hospitalized, although all were expected to recover.

Pelosi: Climate change will be 'early part' of Democrats' 2021 agenda

As wildfires rage across California and the West, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday pledged that major climate change legislation would be an “early part” of Democrats’ 2021 agenda if her party wins back the White House this fall.

“So when Joe Biden says, ‘Build back better,’ that better includes building back in a way that is resilient, that is green, that protects the planet,” Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol. “So I don’t know if it’s one bill or it permeates a number of bills, but it is absolutely a priority.”

Pelosi specifically singled out the Climate Action Now legislation, passed by the House in May, which would recommit the U.S. to the Paris Agreement on climate change. She pointed to the Democrats’ “Moving Forward” green infrastructure package, which would require states to account for climate change before undertaking projects and meet certain greenhouse gas emission goals when they accept funding.

Pelosi also highlighted a report by the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis that Democrats and scientists see as a “road map” for fighting climate change.

The Speaker’s remarks come as wildfires in the West have killed at least seven people, destroyed thousands of homes and scorched more than 2 million acres. A day earlier, Pelosi’s congressional district in San Francisco was blanketed with thick smoke from the fires, blocking out the sun and producing an eerie, surreal landscape that glowed orange.

Pelosi said her phone has been ringing off the hook as family and constituents from the Bay Area reach out to her about the conditions.

“It’s a terrible moment for us in California. … Wildfire ash is blanketing all of the areas beyond where the fire is, in the Bay Area, turning the skies to orange,” Pelosi said. "It's dark; it's dark there. It's morning and they're waiting for the sun to come up and it's dark all day. They need ... to drive with their headlights on."

The first thing Democrats will do if they control all levers of power in January, Pelosi said, is pass major coronavirus relief legislation to help safely “open up our schools and our economy.” That would be the No. 1 priority for Democrats, she said.

“A pandemic descends upon you and eclipses everything,” she said. “Preserving the planet for future generations is the challenge to this generation. We’re late. America is not a leader in this [with] the Republican presidents,” Pelosi said.

“President Obama did a great job in Paris with the Paris accords. Of course, President Trump defied science, [has a] contempt for science, walked away from that.”

In recent weeks, Democrats — hopeful they can retain control of the House and take back the White House and Senate — have been debating what issues they should tackle first in 2021, whether it’s immigration reform, health care, gun control or climate change.

But on Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also turned his attention to the fires wreaking havoc in the West as he rolled out Senate Democrats’ "Thrive" plan on climate change, racial justice and the economy.

ICE, Brazil Federal Police arrest alleged leader of major human smuggling organization

WASHINGTON – The alleged leader of a major human smuggling organization that had smuggled individuals from the Middle East (primarily Iran) into South America, the United States, Canada and Europe was arrested Friday. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) provided significant assistance to the Brazil Federal Police to arrest Reza Sahami, a dual citizen of Canada and Iran, on human smuggling charges.

Law enforcement encountered Sahami guiding a group of seven Iranian nationals in the city of Assis Brasil, on the border of Brazil and Peru. All seven Iranians possessed fraudulent or altered passports from Israel, Denmark and Canada.

“Sahami has been smuggling criminals across international borders for over 10 years,” said ICE Attaché for Brazil Bolivia Robert Fuentes. “We are grateful to our Brazilian partners for the unwavering efforts not only in this investigation, but in our overall strong partnership in combating transnational criminal organizations. ICE Homeland Security Investigations is committed to disrupting human smuggling networks who undermine our immigration and put countless individuals at risk while doing so.”

Special agents with ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Brazil led coordination provided by U.S authorities to the Brazilian government. Additional participating agencies included HSI in Lima (Peru) and the Interpol National Central Bureau in Brazil. HSI Brazil collaborated the efforts of HSI Lima as they worked closely with the HSI Human Smuggling Unit, the HSI Liaison to the U.S. Special Operations Command/Biometric Identification Transnational Migration Alert Program, the National Targeting Center – Investigations, and the National Targeting Center Counter Network Division to support the investigation.

HSI Brazil is part of HSI’s International Operations Division and is the Department of Homeland Security’s largest investigative presence overseas. Division personnel serve as liaisons to governments and law enforcement agencies across the globe and work side-by-side with foreign law enforcement on HSI investigations. ICE is the lead U.S. law enforcement agency responsible for fighting human smuggling and human trafficking.

The Trump administration could address airline layoffs, extend federal unemployment aid

The White House is reportedly considering issuing a new round of executive actions amid dwindling hopes for a bipartisan coronavirus relief deal.

Trump administration officials have discussed efforts to unilaterally provide support for the beleaguered airline industry and bolster federal unemployment benefits, according to The Washington Post, citing two people aware of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The administration has also weighed moving without Congress on allocating more money for school vouchers, and changing President Trump's temporary payroll tax deferral to make it more effective, the Post reported.

The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the authority to determine federal spending.

At the beginning of August, Trump circumvented Congress deadlocked over another round of emergency relief and signed four executive actions to partially restore unemployment benefits at $300 a week and defer payroll tax payments through the end of the year for workers earning less than $104,000, discourage evictions and defer student loan payments.

Although lawmakers joined forces in March to pass a massive $2.2 trillion stimulus deal by near-unanimity, negotiations on another aid package collapsed at the beginning of August. There have been no signs of detente since then, with both sides accusing the other of playing politics.

“Democrats just point fingers, call names and keep blocking American families from getting any more help before the November election,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday on the Senate floor.

State Department to combat Chinese tech dominance

The Trump administration is locked in an effort to divest from Chinese technology firms and push its allies to do the same, according to the senior administration official leading what he described as an unprecedented effort to combat China’s dominance in the tech space.

Concerns are mounting in Washington, D.C., over China’s proliferation of key technologies that permit it to spy on citizens across the globe, including in the United States. From social media applications such as TikTok to Beijing’s 5G efforts with Huawei, Chinese technology has stormed the globe, providing a cheaper alternative to services provided by Western companies. Yet these savings come with risks, Keith Krach, the State Department’s undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment, told the Washington Free Beacon. Krach is the principal point man in the administration’s multi-pronged effort to challenge China on the tech front.

"The CCP is a bully. We know when bullies are confronted, they back down," Krach said. "They really back down when you confront them, and you have all your friends by your side."

Krach and other senior U.S. officials have gone on the offensive, pressing allies to cut ties with Chinese companies that do work in the cellular, cloud computing, cable, and wireless sectors. The Trump administration says the choice is clear: Side with America and the West or face the fallout of partnering with a communist country that has no qualms about stealing private data.

China’s dominance in the tech sphere is in large part the result of its decades-long espionage operations, which have targeted American and European businesses working on cutting-edge internet services, medical research, and other types of computing innovations. Beijing’s theft of intellectual property ranks among the worst in the world. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo chose Krach to helm this campaign, which centers on exposing China’s unfair business practices and reliance on cyber espionage. This approach marks a significant departure from past administrations that sought to play nice with China.

The administration’s new approach centers on building a coalition of allies committed to icing China out of their tech sectors. Portions of this effort have unfolded in public, particularly the recent row between the United States and United Kingdom over its flirtation with Huawei, China’s 5G powerhouse. The United States exerted great diplomatic pressure to extract guarantees from Britain that it would ban Huawei from operating the country’s next-generation 5G cellular networks. This battle continues to unfold across the globe with a host of countries and private companies.

"[China has] been in economic war with us for 40 years," Krach said. "They play four-dimensional economic, diplomatic, propaganda, and military chess."

Disney threatened to boycott Georgia over heartbeat law, filmed ‘Mulan’ near Uighur concentration camps

Viewers of the new 'Mulan' are 'potentially complicit in the mass incarceration of Muslim Uyghurs,' warned Hong Kong pro-democracy Joshua Wong.

Disney filmed Mulan in the region of China where Uighurs are imprisoned in concentration camps and more than a year after its CEO threatened to boycott the state of Georgia for passing a pro-life “heartbeat” bill.

The Daily Caller drew attention to Disney’s past anti-life stance in the wake of controversy erupting after Mulan’s online release Friday.

A live-action remake of Disney’s 1998 animated film, Mulan tells the story of a girl who disguises herself as a boy to fight in China’s imperial army in the place of her father.

Disney shot parts of the movie in China’s mountainous northwest Xinjiang province, the site of Beijing’s widespread human rights abuses against the Uighur people and other Muslim minorities – and the film’s credits thank eight agencies of China’s communist regime, reported the Guardian.

These include “the public security bureau” in Turpan, a city in eastern Xinjiang where several re-education camps detaining Uighurs have been documented, and the “publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee,” which is the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda department in Xinjiang, it reported.

Moreover, according to the Wall Street Journal, Disney shared its script with Chinese authorities and conferred with Chinese advisers so it could guarantee a cinema release in China, a market it was actively courting with the planning and release of Mulan.

The Daily Caller contrasted this activity to Disney CEO Bob Iger warning in May 2019 that the corporation might boycott Georgia after Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed a law prohibiting abortion if a doctor can detect the unborn baby’s heartbeat. The law took effect this January, but is currently blocked as a court battle over it ensues.

Iger told Reuters then it would be “very difficult” to film in the state once the law was on the books because a lot of people in the movie business wouldn’t want to work there.

Deutsche Bank Predicts New World ‘Disorder’, Cold War Between US and China

The new report comes on the heels of predictions by market analysts and hedge funds that the US dollar could lose over a third of its value against the euro and slide against other currencies in the coming months owing to poor US economic performance and ballooning debt in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

The world is “on the cusp” of a new era marked by instability, disorder and the fragmentation of the previous period of globalisation, Deutsche Bank, the largest bank in Germany and one of the largest financial institutions in the world, has predicted in a new report.

In a document for clients entitled the ‘Long-Term Asset Return Study’, the bank suggests that the coronavirus crisis has accelerated, but not caused, the coming about of what lead analyst Jim Reid refers to as the new ‘Age of Disorder’, in which deteriorating relations and divergent interests between the United States and China replace the age of “unfettered globalisation” (and smooth, easy profits) which began in the early 1980s.

“In terms of geopolitics, tension between the US and China should ‘characterise the era of disorder’ as China continues its path of restoring its historic role as a global economic powerhouse while preferring its own values to Western liberalism,” a summary of the report published on the bank’s website notes.

China is expected to overtake the United States in terms of nominal GDP by the end of the current decade, with the sea change expected to escalate a danger of the so-called Thucydides Trap (i.e. the heightened risk of military conflict between two rival powers when one catches up to another economically). The report recalls that wars took place in 12 of the 16 times that the Thucydides Trap has occurred over the past five centuries

Keystone State Republicans have added almost 198,000 registered voters to the books since 2016, while Democrats have gained an additional 29,000, Politico reported Thursday.

Democrats still outnumber Republicans by about 750,000 voters in the state, but the percentage of those registered is down two points from September 2016. The percentage of Republicans has risen from 38% to 39%.

Many party officials credit President Trump with narrowing the divide.

An uptick in registrations in three critical areas across Pennsylvania including Erie, Luzerne, and Northampton counties helped Trump to flip the state in 2016, according to Politico; Hillary Clinton lost to him there by less than one percentage point.

Republicans have made the biggest net gains in western Pennsylvania's Westmoreland, Luzerne and Washington counties, Politico said, while Democrats have gained ground in the suburbs around Philadelphia including Montgomery, Chester, Delaware and Bucks counties.

While Democrats in the state said that they were not particularly concerned about the increase, Republicans said they have benefitted from the Trump campaign's in-person canvassing.

On Wednesday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has unveiled a new whistleblower - former DHS intelligence official Brian Murphy, who claims that Trump administration officials at the White House and Department of Homeland Security suppressed intelligence reports that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election, and 'altered intelligence' related to comments made by President Trump.

"We’ve received a whistleblower complaint alleging DHS suppressed intel reports on Russian election interference, altered intel to match false Trump claims and made false statements to Congress," Schiff tweeted, adding "We will investigate."

Except, Schiff did investigate - his whistleblower - for allegedly 'providing incomplete and potentially misleading information to Committee staff,' according to the New York Times.

Not only that, Murphy was fired from his job as the head of DHS's intelligence branch and reassigned after he compiled reports about protesters and journalists reporting on the Trump administration's response to the riots in Portland, Oregon in July.

Brian Murphy, the acting under secretary for intelligence and analysis, was reassigned to a new position in the department after his office disseminated to the law enforcement community “open-source intelligence reports” containing Twitter posts of journalists, noting they had published leaked unclassified documents, according to an administration official familiar with the matter. It was not clear what Mr. Murphy’s new position would be. -New York Times

As a result of Murphy's actions, acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf asked the Inspector General to investigate.

Twitter is set to announce measures to censor President Donald Trump and others if they claim an “early victory” on election night, as Silicon Valley elites try to prepare the country for what they think will be a lengthy period of counting mail-in ballots, which are subject to tampering and fraud according to a Democrat whistleblower.

Twitter announced the upcoming changes in a blog post today, titled “expanding our policies to further protect the civic conversation.”

Via the Twitter blog:

In recognition of the changing circumstances of how people will vote in 2020, and in line with our commitment to protecting the integrity of the election conversation, we’re expanding this existing framework. The goal is to further protect against content that could suppress the vote and help stop the spread of harmful misinformation that could compromise the integrity of an election or other civic process.

Twitter outlined three types of “false or misleading information” about elections that will be subject to censorship, although the post also stressed that the list doesn’t limit the company’s ability to take action on tweets that don’t fall under the three categories.

Starting next week, we will label or remove false or misleading information intended to undermine public confidence in an election or other civic process. This includes but is not limited to:

False or misleading information that causes confusion about the laws and regulations of a civic process, or officials and institutions executing those civic processes.

Disputed claims that could undermine faith in the process itself, e.g. unverified information about election rigging, ballot tampering, vote tallying, or certification of election results.

Misleading claims about the results or outcome of a civic process which calls for or could lead to interference with the implementation of the results of the process, e.g. claiming victory before election results have been certified, inciting unlawful conduct to prevent a peaceful transfer of power or orderly succession.

In line with our existing enforcement approach, Tweets that are labeled under this expanded policy will have reduced visibility across the service. Reducing the visibility of Tweets means that we will not amplify the Tweets on a number of surfaces across Twitter. However, anyone following the account will still be able to see the Tweet and Retweet.

Twitter has repeatedly censored Trump’s account over the past several months, hiding tweets from the President on a range of topics including COVID-19 and the George Floyd riots.

France Asserts Itself in Iraq as US Withdraws. Macron’s Trip to Baghdad

As the United States continues to drawdown its presence in Iraq more than 17 years after invading it, other powers have their eye on the vacuum that will be left by Washington cutting its losses and departing.

French President Emmanuel Macron recently made a trip to Iraq, pledging economic, military, and political support for the embattled government of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, reigniting discussion about France’s role in Iraq since the 1980s and its arms sales to the former regime of Saddam Hussein.

Domestically, however, neighbouring powers are once again being eyed with suspicion as thousands of tonnes of fish have mysteriously died in Iraq’s southern marshlands.

Local tribes reliant on both fish and water buffalo for their livelihoods have been affected, with some alleging foul play from actors originating in both Iran and Turkey, both large regional economies attempting that export significant quantities of food, including seafood, to Iraq.

French President Emmanuel Macron has declared a raft of aid and support packages to assist the beleaguered Iraqi government, as reports indicate that the United States is planning further troop reductions in the embattled country.

US plans to withdraw from Iraq may be interpreted as an opportunity for other former world powers to reassert themselves on the international stage

Thousands of American troops could be heading home from Iraq this November, according to unofficial remarks made by anonymous US officials to the Wall Street Journal last Friday.

American troops are in Iraq to train and advise Iraqi security forces battling the Islamic State (IS) group, but the relationship has been rocky at times in large part because of periodic attacks by Iran-backed militia groups that are not fully controlled by the Iraqi government.

US troops, after invading Iraq and toppling President Saddam Hussein in 2003, had withdrawn from the country in 2011 only to begin returning in 2014 after IS militants swept across the Syrian border and took control of large swaths of Iraqi territory.

If enacted, the move would be in line with President Donald Trump’s campaign promises to bring American soldiers home from “endless” war and conflict zones abroad.

“We look forward to the day when we don’t have to be there,” Trump said then. “We were there and now we’re getting out. We’ll be leaving shortly and the relationship is very good.

“We’re making very big oil deals. Our oil companies are making massive deals…We’re going to be leaving and hopefully we’re going to be leaving a country that can defend itself.” But American plans to withdraw may be interpreted as an opportunity for other former world powers to reassert themselves on the international stage.

The debut of ‘Cuties’ on Netflix has sparked renewed accusations that the streaming giant is sexualizing kids — but the New Yorker seems unbothered, sparking backlash after calling the anger over the movie a “right-wing campaign.”

‘Cuties,’ which debuted on Netflix on Wednesday, previously inspired controversy over a poster featuring pre-pubescent girls posing provocatively. The synopsis accompanying the photo didn’t help either, describing an 11-year-old who begins to “explore her femininity” as she tries to join a “twerking dance crew.”

Netflix apologized for the “inappropriate artwork” used to promote the French film, but now footage from the movie itself has critics branding it “soft core child pornography” and deeming those behind it criminals.

While the movie has plenty of critics, it also has its defenders. The New Yorker, for instance, called the movie "extraordinary" and said it had become "the target of a right-wing campaign." New Yorker critic Richard Brody backs up this theory by saying that "some well known figures of the far right" are upset over the film — though if social media reaction is anything to go by, the outrage over the film is hardly restricted to conservatives

The Chinese Government has accused Australian officials of obstructing their law enforcement agencies when they sheltered two Australian journalists in diplomatic compounds last week.

The ABC's Bill Birtles and the Australian Financial Review's Mike Smith arrived in Sydney on Tuesday morning after a five-day diplomatic stand-off between the two countries.

Several Australian Government ministers have praised the way Australian diplomats handled the negotiations and secured permission for both correspondents to leave China.

But on Thursday night, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Australia's decision to shelter both men on diplomatic premises while the talks progressed was "an interference in China's internal affairs and judicial sovereignty".

"Australia's actions in organising the two journos to hide in the embassy completely exceeds the scope of consular protection and in fact is interference in a Chinese legal case," he said.

"This practice is inconsistent with the status and identity of the Australian embassy in China."

Birtles and Smith both took refuge with Australian diplomats after they were slapped with travel bans and Chinese Ministry of State Security officers demanded the pair submit to questioning.

Australian and Chinese officials negotiated for days before reaching an agreement to lift the bans in exchange for the two journalists agreeing to be interviewed.

Both men say they were asked about Australian TV presenter Cheng Lei, who worked for Chinese state broadcaster CGTN and has been detained on suspicion of endangering national security.

Birtles and Smith had met Cheng Lei, but neither knew her well. Both men said they believed they were being deliberately harassed by the Chinese Government.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had previously warned the ABC and Nine, owner of the Australian Financial Review, that there were risks to Birtles and Smith's safety if they remained in China.

One Australian Government source dismissed the Chinese Foreign Ministry's latest attack and said the embassy simply relied on universally accepted principles of diplomatic protection.

A spokesman for Foreign Minister Marise Payne declined to comment.

The saga has fed into the increasingly poisonous relationship between Australia and China. This week Beijing also lashed out at Australia over an investigation into a foreign interference which has embroiled a number of Chinese journalists and academics in Australia.

Australian Government officials suspect that the Chinese Government's attempt to harass and intimidate Birtles and Smith was – in part — retaliation for that investigation.

NFL Player Fraudulently Obtained $1.2 Million in Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Program Loan

A National Football League (NFL) player has been charged for his alleged participation in a scheme to file fraudulent loan applications seeking more than $24 million in forgivable Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian C. Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Ariana Fajardo Orshan of the Southern District of Florida, Special Agent in Charge Michael J. De Palma of the IRS-Criminal Investigation (CI) Miami Field Office, Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro of FBI’s Miami Field Office, and Special Agent in Charge Kevin A. Kupperbusch of the U.S. SBA-Office of Inspector General (OIG), Investigations Division, Eastern Regional Office, made the announcement.

Joshua J. Bellamy, 31, of St. Petersburg, Florida, a player in the NFL, was charged in a federal criminal complaint filed in the Southern District of Florida with wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud. Bellamy was arrested this morning and will appear today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christopher Tuite of the Middle District of Florida.

The complaint alleges that Bellamy conspired with others to obtain millions of dollars in fraudulent PPP loans. Early in the scheme, Phillip J. Augustin allegedly obtained a fraudulent PPP loan for his talent management company using falsified documents. After submitting that application, Augustin then began to work with other co-conspirators, including Bellamy, on a scheme to submit numerous fraudulent PPP loan applications for confederate loan applicants, in order to receive kickbacks for obtaining the forgivable loans for them.

Bellamy is alleged to have obtained a PPP loan of $1,246,565 for his own company, Drip Entertainment LLC. Bellamy allegedly purchased over $104,000 in luxury goods using proceeds of his PPP loan, including purchases at Dior, Gucci, and jewelers. He is also alleged to have spent approximately $62,774 in PPP loan proceeds at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, and to have withdrawn over $302,000. Bellamy also allegedly sought PPP loans on behalf of his family members and close associates.

The complaint alleges that the scheme involved the preparation of at least 90 fraudulent applications, most of which were submitted. Augustin, Bellamy, and other conspirators in the scheme are alleged to have applied for PPP loans that are together worth more than $24 million dollars. Many of those loan applications were approved and funded by financial institutions, paying out at least $17.4 million.

‘Operation Crystal Shield’ Cracks Down On ‘Ruthless’ Meth Cartels

919 pounds of methamphetamine seized by DEA before reaching the streets of West Texas and New Mexico

WASHINGTON – Today, Attorney General William P. Barr and Drug Enforcement Administration Acting Administrator Timothy J. Shea announced the results of Operation Crystal Shield, DEA’s six-month-long effort targeting the command and control elements of Mexican cartels that operate major methamphetamine “transportation hubs” in the United States.

At a press conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Attorney General Barr and Acting Administrator Shea announced that in just six months, Operation Crystal Shield generated a total of more than 750 investigations, resulting in nearly 1,840 arrests and the seizure of more than 28,560 pounds of methamphetamine, $43.3 million in drug proceeds, and 284 firearms.

In the DEA El Paso Division alone, which covers West Texas and New Mexico, DEA conducted 101 investigations, made 176 arrests, and seized 919 pounds of methamphetamine, $ 1,165,777 in drug proceeds, and 19 firearms.

“In the months leading up to the launch of Operation Crystal Shield, communities across the United States experienced a surge of methamphetamine,” said Acting Administrator Timothy J. Shea. “The COVID pandemic locked down many communities and impacted legitimate businesses, but the drug trade continued. Under difficult conditions, DEA – along with our federal, state, and local partners – never stopped working as we helped stem the flow of methamphetamine onto our streets, even as violent drug traffickers sought new ways to smuggle it into the United States. The success of Operation Crystal Shield reflects the devotion of DEA and our partners to protect our communities from the scourge of drug trafficking and violent crime under any circumstances.”

“Methamphetamine abuse destroys lives and seriously affects the quality of life in communities where it takes hold,” said Kyle W. Williamson, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso Division. “By disrupting distribution networks, seizing their profits and putting dealers behind bars, DEA and its law enforcement partners are keeping dangerous drugs like methamphetamine off the streets and making communities safer.”

DEA launched Operation Crystal Shield on February 20, after identifying nine major methamphetamine trafficking hubs: Atlanta, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Diego and St. Louis. Together these nine cities accounted for more than 75 percent of methamphetamine seized by DEA in 2019. Under this operation, DEA directed enforcement resources to these cities where methamphetamine is often trafficked in bulk and then distributed across the country.

Operation Crystal Shield leveraged existing DEA initiatives that target major drug trafficking networks, including the Mexican cartels that are responsible for the overwhelming majority of methamphetamine trafficked into and within the United States. From FY 2017 to FY 2019, DEA domestic seizures of methamphetamine increased 127 percent from 49,507 pounds to 112,146 pounds. During the same timeframe, the number of DEA arrests related to methamphetamine increased by nearly 20 percent.

Newly released DOJ records show “pitbull” Andrew Weissmann and multiple Mueller henchmen claiming to have “accidentally wiped” at least 31 phones used in the anti-Trump Russia probe.

The documents were uncovered thanks to a Judicial Watch FOIA lawsuit.

The phones were all conveniently wiped after the DOJ IG asked for the devices to be handed over — some phones wiped themselves, according to the DOJ!

The records show virtually all of Mueller’s lawyers used the same tactic: Put their phones in airplane mode, lock them and then nuke the phones by repeatedly entering the wrong password.

The wrong password must be entered 10 times in a row in order to nuke the phone.

“Employee tried to incorrectly enter password too many times, and the phone was wiped of all data” – one entry shows in the OIG records.

“During out processing conversation… [redacted] indicated she had to wipe her phone because she forgot the password. Her phone had to be wiped to be reset because the passcode provided was inaccurate and the phone was left in airplane mode.” – another entry stated.

Today is ECB ( European Central Bank ) day where we get the results of their latest deliberations. We may get a minor move but essentially it is one for what we have come to call open mouth operations. This is more than a little awkward when the President has already established a reputation for putting her Hermes shod foot in her mouth. Who can forget this from March 12th?

Lagarde: We are not here to close spreads, there are other tools and other actors to deal with these issues.

I'm calling 9/28 as a significant day.

I'll try to be concise about why. When Q posted on 8/26, he linked a Trump tweet then followed it w/ 4 lines of text each starting with the word ONE (all caps). I had just recently seen someone point out that 11/11/20 will be 1111 days since the first Q post. The four ones reminded me of this, and I calculated the number of days from 8/26 to 11/11. It was 77. Repetition of digits, so maybe significant.

Today, I notice Q keeps calling Obama "44." Usually he says Hussein or BO, so I took note of this. Thinking of my previous theory, I checked what day would be 44 days until 11/11. Of course, it's 9/28. Went back to check for previous posts on that date. Q posted on this date in 2018. The first post at 12:01 AM on 9/28/18 (Q2288) reads:

That 2015 transaction approved by the Obama administration and its Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) came just 15 months after the United States publicly added one of AVIC’s subsidiaries to a Commerce Department blacklist (known as the “Entity List”) and just months before the Obama administration resumed patrols in the South China Sea because of increased Beijing military aggression in the region, where AVIC-built military jets partake in China’s activities.

The timing has left many, including Senate Finance Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), questioning whether the CFIUS decision whitewashed security concerns because the vice president’s son was involved in the transaction. Those concerns were heightened this June when the Pentagon listed the entire AVIC conglomerate on a list of companies subject to future sanctions because of its ties to the People’s Liberation Army.

“The direct involvement of Mr. Hunter Biden and Mr. Heinz in the acquisition of Henniges by the Chinese government creates a potential conflict of interest,” the senator wrote in an Aug. 14, 2019 letter. “Both are directly related to high-ranking Obama administration officials. The Department of State, then under Mr. Kerry’s leadership, is also a CFIUS member and played a direct role in the decision to approve the Henniges transaction. The appearance of potential conflicts in this case is particularly troubling given Mr. Biden’s and Mr. Heinz’s history of investing in and collaborating with Chinese companies, including at least one posing significant national security concerns.”

After the seizure of power in late January 1933, the National Socialists immediately began, in the course of their "National Socialist revolution," to reorganize the police organization according to their ideas. A first step along this path was the destruction of the police unions.

The majority of the police organizations-and among them the Schrader Association in particular-had incurred the hatred of the National Socialists through their democratic attitude. By destroying their organizations, the Nazis deprived possible resistance efforts by republican-minded officials of their ground. At the same time, they used existing structures, such as the association newspapers, to spread their propaganda and to promote the synchronization of the police and their associations. For example, the declarations of admission to the newly created National Socialist "Kameradschaftsbund Deutscher Polizeibeamter e. V." were sent out as a supplement to the August issue of the Verbands-Zeitung, the Schrader association dissolved on July 29, 1933.

On July 17, Willi Luckner, who later became the federal leader of the Kameradschaftsbund, issued a decree that all police units had to be dissolved by August 31 in accordance with their statutes. Under strong pressure from the NSDAP, their members were transferred to the Kameradschaftsbund, officially formed on September 1, 1933. The Kameradschaftsbund set up its office at Lützowstrasse 73 in Berlin and was divided into individual regional associations, which in turn were subdivided into regional districts. The fact that the National Socialist police organization was by no means a representation of interests according to trade union standards is made clear by the statutes of the Kameradschaftsbund; Landesbund Preußen. But the forces were unequally distributed. Immediately after taking office, the provisional Prussian Minister of the Interior, Hermann Göring, dismissed not only top political officials but also 14 police presidents and filled the posts with politically acceptable candidates. At the same time, he removed the political police department from its previous anchoring in the Prussian interior and police administration and made it independent as the Secret State Police. In the other German states, too, the political police were expanded as an instrument of terror. In a speech on March 3, 1933, Göring clearly stated: "My measures will not be soiled by any legal objections. My measures will not be offended by any bureaucracy. Here I have no justice to exercise, here I have only to destroy and exterminate, nothing more! [...] I am not waging such a fight with police means. A bourgeois state may have done that. On February 17, the KPD party headquarters in Berlin was occupied by the police and searched for alleged plans to overthrow the party. On the same day, Göring instructed the police to support the national propaganda with all their might, but to "oppose the activities of anti-state organizations with the strongest means" and, "if necessary, to make ruthless use of firearms". A few days earlier, several hundred SA men had attacked a Communist Red Aid event in Eisleben, Saxony, and caused a bloodbath. A total of 69 dead and hundreds of injured were officially counted in this election campaign.

Social Democratic and Communist newspapers that reported critically on these events were banned for several days. On February 23, Göring ordered the formation of 50,000 "auxiliary policemen", who were to be recruited exclusively from the SA, SS and Stahlhelm and armed with truncheons and pistols, in order to allegedly combat "increasing riots from the radical left, especially from the Communist side. Now tens of thousands of SA thugs were able to exercise their violent terror against the left as state police officers.

Haim Saban to Hold $500,000-per-Person Fundraiser for Joe Biden

Haim Saban, the media billionaire who is a fixture in Democratic Party fundraising, is organizing a $500,000-per-person fundraiser for Joe Biden next Monday.

Saban has long said he is “a one-issue guy, and my issue is Israel.” In a statement supporting Biden, Saban said the former vice president will “ensure that the strong, bipartisan alliance between the U.S. and Israel remains unshakeable.”

“This alliance is vital to our American interests, something Joe articulated best when he said: ‘If there were not an Israel, we would have to invent one to make sure our interests were preserved,'” Saban said. “I am confident that Joe is the right leader to make real progress for Americans and our international partners, and urge our party to unite in his support.”

Like all fundraisers in the COVID era, the event will be held virtually. It will be hosted by Saban and his wife, Cheryl. Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, will be among the participants, according to a person familiar with the event.

Saban stayed out of the Democratic primary, making his first donation to Biden’s campaign in May, after Biden had sewn up the nomination. He told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019 that he had a “profound dislike” for Sen. Bernie Sanders, calling him a “communist” who believes that “every billionaire is a crook.”

Saban hosted a high-dollar fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at his Beverly Hills home last November. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries attended the event.

“I am pleased to see so many Democrats coming together in support of Vice President Joe Biden, and I am proud to endorse him for President,” Saban said in the statement. “Joe is a proven leader who has the experience, vision and heart to unify our country in this hyper-partisan time.”

Saban heads the Saban Capital Group, and announced last year that he was investing $500 million to launch a record label, Saban Music Group.
