Pakistan says three children among four civilians killed in Indian shelling

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani army said Indian shelled a district bordering Kashmir on Friday, killing four civilians including three children.

Indian troops initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the Working Boundary targeting civilian population in Sialkot sector, the army said in a statement.

It said the shelling also wounded another 10 Pakistani citizens. Paramilitary Pakistani Rangers responded and targeted the Indian posts, the statement said.

No immediate comment was available from New Delhi.

Both the countries claim in full the picturesque Kashmir valley, and have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region, which they have disputed since partition and independence from British colonial rule in 1947.

Relations between the arch-rivals have been poor since the 2008 Mumbai siege, which killed 166 people, including Westerners.

Delhi blamed the Islamist militants from Pakistan for the attack.

A recent statement from ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that implied that the Islamist militants from Pakistan had crossed into the Indian business hub has created a new controversy.

India wants Hafiz Saeed, the chief of Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) - Army of the Pure - and some of his deputies to be tried in the Mumbai attack.

Pakistan says no evidence was found against Saeed, but initiated a trial against the deputies who have been bailed. The trial remains unfinished.

Attorney General Sessions Announces Hugh Hurwitz as the Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons

Attorney General Jeff Sessions today announced that Hugh Hurwitz will begin serving as the Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons on May 19, 2018, following Former Director Mark Inch’s resignation.

“I am pleased to announce Hugh Hurwitz as the Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Hugh has honorably served the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the American people throughout his distinguished career of federal service.” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “I would also like to thank Mark Inch for proudly serving the Department of Justice as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and wish him luck in his future endeavors.”

Mr. Hurwitz began his career with the Bureau of Prisons as a law clerk in the Office of General Counsel in 1988. In 2003, Mr. Hurwitz was selected as the Chief of Acquisitions and Grants Services at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), later becoming the FDA's Chief of Information Technology Shared Services. In 2007, he was appointed Senior Procurement Executive for the U.S. Department of Education (ED) before being promoted to Deputy Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Hurwitz joined NASA's Office of Inspector General in 2012 as the Assistant Inspector General for Management. In 2015, he returned to the Bureau of Prisons as the Senior Deputy Assistant Director of the Information, Policy and Public Affairs Division. In 2017, Mr. Hurwitz was named Assistant Director for the Reentry Services Division.

As Assistant Director, Mr. Hurwitz oversaw a wide variety of areas, including mental health and drug treatment, community placement, and the education, vocational and recreation training programs for federal inmates nationwide. Mr. Hurwitz was responsible for coordinating efforts with other disciplines, agencies, and organizations to facilitate the successful reintegration of inmates back to their communities upon release.

He has previously held academic posts in the University of Ioannina, Greece; University of Liverpool, U.K.; ETH Zürich, Switzerland; and University of Athens, Greece. Dr. Pagourtzis is a member of EATCS and the Technical Chamber of Greece. The main research interests of Dr. Pagourtzislie in the areas of algorithms for optical networks, distributed protocols for ad hoc radio networks, computational complexity of counting problems, and algorithmic game theory.

During the talk at TeleCoN, Dr. Pagourtzis discussed deterministic broadcasting protocols in wireless ad hoc networks where nodes have limited energy resources, demonstrated how this can be modelled by setting an upper bound on the number of transmissions available to each node, and presented an almost oblivious protocol.

The work of Dr. Pagourtzis was discussed at length by the members of TeleCoN Research Centre. A number of interesting research avenues emerged for collaboration with Dr. Pagourtzis as a result of this discussion.

Former Microsoft executive Qi Lu steps down as Baidu COO

Baidu on Friday said its operating chief, former Microsoft executive Qi Lu, will be stepping down in July, less than two years into his tenure there. Baidu stock was down more than 9 percent after the announcement.

The move is a loss for one of China's leading tech companies, which are racing like American technology companies to enhance services with artificial intelligence.

Baidu hired Lu to take on day-to-day operations on behalf of CEO Robin Li in January 2017. Immediately prior to that, he was an executive vice president at Microsoft, where he was in charge of Office applications. Earlier in his career he worked at IBM and Yahoo. Office is now a key part of Microsoft's growing Commercial Cloud.

"We have seen many positive changes at Baidu since Qi joined last year. I'm especially impressed by Qi's integrity, dedication to work and sharp insights into technologies and businesses," Li said in a statement on the news.

Lu said in the statement that he can no longer work full-time in China for "personal and family reasons" and will spend more time in the U.S. He will retain his role as vice president of Baidu's board and will focus on research and development, although he won't be working full-time for Baidu.
