Four Taliban members swapped for Bowe Bergdahl now in Afghan government

Four of the five Taliban members released from Guantanamo Bay by the Obama administration in 2014 in exchange for admitted US Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl are part of the Islamic fundamentalist group’s new hardline government in Afghanistan, according to local media reports.

The four members of the so-called “Taliban Five” who have joined the new government are Acting Director of Intelligence Abdul Haq Wasiq, Acting Minister of Borders and Tribal Affairs Norullah Noori, Deputy Defense Minister Mohammad Fazl, and Acting Minister of Information and Culture Khairullah Khairkhah. The fifth member of the Taliban Five, Mohammad Nabi Omari, was appointed governor of eastern Khost Province last month.

Afghan outlet TOLOnews published a list Tuesday of members of the new “caretaker” government, which features several familiar faces who helped run the war-torn country between 1996 and 2001 — when the Taliban were forced from power by US-led NATO forces following the 9/11 attacks.

Wasiq, Fazl, and Khairkhah all held positions in the former Taliban government — Wasiq as a deputy intelligence chief, Fazl as army chief of staff, and Khairkhah as interior minister.

How to back up your data and keep it safe

I'd always thought I was pretty good at keeping my personal data safe, but I was wrong.

My personal files were backed up onto two HDD external hard drives, and in the space of 24 hours in July, both drives failed.

Windows 10 told me that one drive wasn't working properly and kept offering to repair it, to no avail, while the other made a suspicious clicking noise and couldn't be detected by the computer at all.

All of this got me thinking - as a consumer, what is the right way to back up your data, and what do you do if it goes wrong?

External hard drives are portable storage devices that plug into PCs. There are two types - hard disk drives (HDD) that use spinning magnetic discs to store data, and newer, solid state drives (SSD) that use a chip-based flash storage technology.

I started using 1TB Western Digital HDD drives in 2015. Prior to that, I had backed up my data on my laptop and on writeable DVDs.

If my computer died, I would buy a new one, get the data recovered from the old laptop and transferred straight onto the new PC.

Yet once I started using an external hard drive, it was so easy to use that I began to depend on the technology entirely, and when I got a second drive I thought my solution was infallible.

When I got a new laptop a couple years ago with a much smaller but exponentially faster SSD hard drive in it, I wasn't fazed - all I had to do was keep most files on the hard drives, leaving just a few frequently used files on the laptop.

So when the drives failed I was shocked. I turned to the internet but the how-to software tutorials online were of no help.

The response from the psychiatric community, far from dismissive or even sceptical, has been largely open-armed. The drugs may well mark the field’s first paradigm shift since SSRIs in the 1980s.

In 2017, for example, the US Food and Drug Administration designated MDMA a "breakthrough therapy", which meant it would be fast-tracked through to the second stage of Phase-3 trials. Doblin, whose organisation was instrumental in achieving the designation, hopes it will achieve FDA approval by 2023.

Psychedelics remain Schedule-1 drugs federally in the US and Class-A in the UK, but rules are relaxing. Along with Austria and Spain in the EU, psilocybin mushrooms have been decriminalised in Washington DC and a host of other US cities, and legalised for therapy in Oregon, where LSD has also been decriminalised. A California bill to decriminalise LSD and psilocybin passed several crucial committee stages and will be decided next year. A vote to federally sponsor psychedelic research recently made its way to Congress.

In anticipation of this shift, psychedelic drug developers and clinical providers are attracting significant investment. Business reports describe "psychedelic euphoria” and a "Shroom Boom".

This phenomenon is known as the "psychedelic renaissance" – and it promises to change far more about our societies than simply the medical treatments that doctors prescribe. Unlike other drugs, psychedelics can radically alter the way people see the world. They also bring mystical and hallucinatory experiences that are at the edge of current scientific understanding. The greater the mystical experience, studies suggest, the greater the derived therapeutic benefit. Questionnaires to measure, track, and better-understand the mystical experience are proliferating…

Outside psychedelic usage, more people have had mystical experiences than you might think. From 1962 to 2009 – the last year of available data – the number of Americans who reported a lifetime mystical experience more than doubled to half the population….

As the author Jules Evans points out in The Art of Losing Control, the unitive character of the clinical mystical experience – that sense of losingone's ego and becoming "one with everything" – also leaves out half the picture. A third of DMT smokers, 17% of LSD takers, and 12% of psilocybin users report encountering external entities. In neoshamanic rituals with ayahuasca, daime and iboga, these entities are anchors of the peak experience….

If hallucinatory experiences were to be mainstreamed, not just de-stigmatised, this could mark a radical shift, says Davis, since they are more often associated with pathological conditions such as schizophrenia. He suggests it would be the culmination of the modern "neurodiversity" movement, which recognises conditions like autism or hearing voices as differences on a spectrum, and not discrete problems to be solved…

But the mystical, hallucinogenic and transformative experiences coupled with these drugs are likely to change far more than that for many. F-35 program's future uncertain owing to design flaws, parts shortages and cost blowouts

One of more than a dozen buyers of the F-35, Australia has well and truly bought into the excitement surrounding the fifth-generation combat jet.

Key points:

In 2002, the Howard Government committed to buying up to 100 F-35 fighter jets when they were still being designed

In the US, enthusiasm for the jet is waning among some politicians as the program's costs soar

According to the US Defence spending watchdog, the F-35 has 883 unresolved design flaws and the Pentagon is currently reviewing the project

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison even took to the cockpit of one in a hangar at Williamtown Air Force Base near Newcastle, as the song Danger Zone from the Hollywood blockbuster Top Gun played in the background.

But in the United States, enthusiasm for the jet is waning among some politicians as the program's costs soar.

With a current whole of life cost estimate of $2.3 trillion (US$1.7 trillion), the chair of the Armed Services Committee Democrat Adam Smith said in March he wanted to stop throwing money down "that particular rat hole".

Former US Marine Corps captain Dan Grazier believed the line of critics was growing longer, as the combat jet failed to deliver on promised capabilities.

"The F-35 program right now is certainly a program in trouble," Mr Grazier said.

"The last acting Secretary of Defence under the Trump administration, in a kind of parting shot in his final week … he essentially called the F-35 a piece of shit."…

But retired US Air Force combat veteran David Deptula said the F-35s had been unfairly maligned throughout their 20-year history.

"Unfortunately, there's been an over-focus on cost as opposed to the real measure of merit, and that's value – value in the context of cost-effectiveness," he said.

"A handful of F-35s can accomplish the same mission objectives, or desired effects, as it might take 12, 15, 20, 25 or more other aircraft.

"It's already participated in combat in Afghanistan, with both the United States Marine Corps as well as the United States Air Force.

"The proof is really in the pudding when it comes to performance, and that is not listening to what some budget analyst in Washington [has to say] … but the man or woman who's been piloting the F-35.

"They'll tell you that it's a game-changing aircraft."…

MORE Afghanistan spending: Biden asks Congress for $6.4 billion for ‘full resettlement’ of Afghan refugees

President Joe Biden has asked Congress to fund the transport, screening, and “full resettlement resources” for Afghan refugees airlifted out of Kabul and waiting to go to the US. The operation will cost the taxpayer $6.4 billion.

By the time the last American plane left Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul a week ago, more than 120,000 people had been airlifted out of the Afghan capital. However, fewer than 6,000 of these were American citizens and their families. “The vast majority” were Afghan refugees and Special Immigrant Visa applicants, according to the Pentagon.

These Afghans were shuttled to American military bases around the world to be processed, with some already flown to new lives in the US. However, keeping and transporting these refugees costs money, and Biden on Tuesday revealed the price in a request to Congress: $6.4 billion.

The White House asked Congress to include this sum on a forthcoming continuing resolution – a bill that modifies the previous year’s spending bill to allow the continued functioning of government should debate delay the passage of the following year’s spending legislation.

The $6.4 billion will fund the security and health screening of “tens of thousands” of Afghans at the US’ overseas processing centers, humanitarian assistance for these people, transit costs from the centers to the United States, “along with full resettlement resources and a path to enable them to build successful new lives here,” all as per a White House statement.

A new book spells out how the Left and Right are dead in France, and Macron vs Le Pen is all about globalism vs nationalism

‘The Gravediggers’ Tango’ explains the shifting sands in French politics in great detail – and also makes clear that when the dust settles on the 2022 presidential election, it will very much be the end of the road for the loser.

As the battle lines for next year’s French elections become ever more clear, President Emmanuel Macron and challenger Marine Le Pen find themselves in a grim war of attrition, both competing for the same voters, both putting everything on the line and both knowing that failure will be the end of their political career.

Of course, they’ve been here before, having contested two rounds of the 2017 election, which finished 66-34 in Macron’s favour. But four years ago, Macron was a former Socialist minister trying to convince the people he was a democratic revolutionary with a bold new third way, while Le Pen was the leader of a hardline, stubbornly right-wing party that wanted out of the European Union and took a tough stance on immigration, Islam and patriotism.

In ‘Macron-Le Pen, The Gravediggers’ Tango’, Le Figaro journalists François-Xavier Bourmaud and Charles Sapin meticulously chart the courses chosen by the two candidates seeking the highest office in La Republique.

But this is no story of Right and Left ideology, because in France these two bastions of political thinking are no longer relevant. Neither of these traditional camps, so commonplace in most other Western democracies, has been able to present a single serious candidate capable of uniting the various splinter groups that now comprise their whole. Nor do they show any capacity to attract voters away from Macron’s La République En Marche or Le Pen’s Rassemblement National.

As the book’s title suggests, Macron and Le Pen have laid the traditional schools of thought to rest, but both have paid a heavy price, lost close allies along the way and, come the day after the second round of the presidential election next year, their ambitions could also be dead and buried.

A breath of fresh air when he declared his candidacy in 2016, Macron had shed the political affiliation he had formed with former President François Hollande, preferring his own route to power which meant a new party, formed from the top down with him as its leader.

The idea was simple. Neither Left nor Right had the solutions to the problems facing France and opinion polls backed that idea. In 2016, pollster Elabe found 45% of French people considered the ideal head of state would be neither Left, in the centre nor on the Right. It was obvious what the people wanted: anything different. So that’s what Macron gave them.

To soften his socialist background, he chose Edouard Philippe, a former member of the traditionally Right Les Republicains, to be his prime minister, neatly mixing red and blue into a palatable purple. Then, by maintaining the narrative of Le Pen as an extremist, he kept the pathway to the Elysee clear of competition so he could stride confidently towards the palace gates, before starting work on his ambitious platform of simultaneous right-wing and left-wing reforms.

Le Pen may have lost the battle but she certainly learned her lesson. After 2017 it was back to the drawing board. And that meant a quantum shift in her offering to the French public.

Out went the party’s name; the Front National was no longer. Founded by her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, his legacy of racist policies gave off a stench she just could not get rid of, but the newly branded Rassemblement National would be a fresh, cool breeze. A poll at the time found 72% of traditionally Right Les Republicains supporters approved of the name change.

There would be no more racist talk on immigration or Islam and no more EU-bashing or plans to ditch the euro. And if shifting away from these policies meant some members and supporters were unhappy, then they too could go. And they did. Anything that deterred traditionally centrist-Right voters would be ditched as Le Pen made eyes at prospective supporters.

America must come to terms with fact that Turkish purchase of Russian missile system is DONE DEAL, warns Turkey’s foreign minister

Turkey will continue to receive deliveries of the Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile system, and there is nothing the US can do about it, despite Washington constantly threatening sanctions and other possible consequences.

That’s according to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who told the NTV channel on Tuesday that the purchase had already been completed. “The US should accept that this is a closed subject,” Çavuşoğlu said, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.

In 2017, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed a $2.5 billion agreement for delivery of the S-400 air defense system units. Turkey is the first member of the US-led NATO bloc to do so. In response, the US raised concerns and threatened sanctions, albeit to no effect, and even kicked Ankara out of its F-35 stealth multirole combat aircraft program.

The original deal envisioned delivery of four full S-400 batteries, including launchers, command and logistics vehicles, and missiles. Delivery of the systems began in 2019.

US military knew dozens of Americans were AT THE GATES of Kabul airport but refused entry during evacuation — journalist to RT

The US commanders in charge of evacuation abandoned dozens of American citizens at the gates of Kabul airport amid a chaotic rush to leave Afghanistan, US war correspondent and former special forces soldier Michael Yon told RT.

On Sunday, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain was forced to acknowledge that around 100 Americans still remained in the turbulent country a week after the Biden administration’s August 31 deadline to get everybody out expired.

Former special forces soldier-turned-journalist Michael Yon, who was among the volunteers helping to airlift Americans out of Afghanistan, has shared with RT some disturbing details of how holders of US passports were left behind by their own military.

On August 30, Taliban members delivered a mother with three children as well as 45 other American citizens to the gates of Kabul airport. Three civilian jets, which had been paid for by volunteers, were waiting for them at the airfield.

“We still had time to get them on… but the US military wasn’t letting even civilian Americans with passports… on the base,” Yon said. The media had also been ejected from the airport, so there was no one left to record what was going on, he added.

According to Yon, the fighters from Taliban special operations unit Badri 313 guarding the airfield said that they would let the Americans through the gates if the US military came to pick them up, or at least phone over to give an order to let them through.

Yon said he called all his contacts in the armed forces to get the group through and reach those in charge of the evacuation to persuade them to open the gates and let the Americans board the planes.

“But the military simply wouldn’t let them through. Of course, the military was blaming it on the Department of State,” he said, adding that at the time the government was telling the public that any Americans who didn’t get through had not made it to the airport.

One unnamed US army colonel with knowledge of the evacuation process, who exchanged messages with Yon, was especially frustrated by the chaotic situation.

In one screenshot shared by Yon, the colonel wrote: “Yes, we are f**king abandoning American citizens.”

While not physically at the airport, that colonel was “demonstrating a lot of frustration” and at one point asked “Can you ram the gate?” In other words, Yon said, he was suggesting hitting the gate with a car to get the people through. “I mean, he wanted to rescue those people,” but his supervisors regrettably didn’t share the sentiment.

Yon later wrote a letter to one of the US commanders at the airport, directly blaming her for abandoning Americans.

"You guys left American citizens at the gates of the Kabul airport. Three empty jets paid by volunteers were waiting for them,” the message read, adding sarcastically: “Great job saving yourselves. Probably get a lot of medals.”

Claims from the White House and Pentagon that Americans were only left because they could not reach the airport were “bulls**t,” according to Yon. “They definitely were at the gate. Period.”

With evacuation flights no longer departing from Kabul airport, the volunteers are using other routes to evacuate the Americans out of Afghanistan.

Encrypted email website ProtonMail passes user’s IP address to French authorities, leading to arrest of climate activist

A French climate activist has been arrested after the private email service ProtonMail cooperated with authorities after a court ruling, logging details of a user before providing it to the police to identify a French citizen.

On Monday, Andy Yen, the founder and CEO of Proton, the company behind the Swiss email provider ProtonMail, published a statement saying that he deplored the way legal tools had been used to bring about the arrest of a French climate change activist, but claimed his service was still secure.

“In this case, Proton received a legally binding order from Swiss authorities which we are obligated to comply with. There was no possibility to appeal this particular request,” Yen wrote.

The data was requested as part of a wider investigation into the occupation of a number of Paris flats and commercial properties by climate activists. While attempting to remain anonymous, one of the activists had used the address “jmm18@protonmail.com” in online postings.

French police sought to find the person behind the account and registered a request with a court in Switzerland – the home of ProtonMail – with the help of Europol. Being a Swiss entity, the firm abides by that country’s laws, meaning foreign requests, such as the one put forward by the French and Europol, would only be acted upon if approved by a Swiss court.

After the court approved the request, the encrypted email firm started logging IP information of the account in question before handing it over to the French police. The French activist was duly arrested.

ProtonMail explicitly says it will be forced to log and hold users’ IP addresses if they are found to be in violation of Swiss laws. However, the company claims it does not log details which could be linked with anonymous email accounts.

Commenting on the news, one person wrote on Twitter that they do not blame ProtonMail for adhering to the court’s request, but did blame the company for advertising anonymity features which it has been unable to deliver.

Another person told people to just use gmail: “If you do not want Google reading it, email is not the appropriate format for your communication.”

In his statement, Yen said that the contents of the arrested person’s emails are encrypted and could not be accessed, even by Proton. Under Swiss law, email and VPN (virtual private network) services are treated differently, Yen wrote, claiming that sister company ProtonVPN cannot be compelled to log user data and hand it over to the relevant authorities.

The tech boss described the prosecution in this case as “very aggressive” and claimed it is part of an alarming trend where authorities are increasingly requesting data from firms such as ProtonMail.

Yen stated that the firm would continue to fight against unjustified government requests, and also called out the French authorities for inappropriate use of anti-terrororism laws. According to ProtonMail’s transparency report, the company was given 3,572 requests in 2020 from Swiss courts, more than double the previous year. Yen says the company fought over 700 of the cases in 2020 alone but did not reveal how often they were successful.

In August it was reported that ProtonMail was forced to hand over user data to American security authorities and enforcement agencies in a case concerning threats of violence toward Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the US president.
