Abstract

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the development of a highly contagious disease called coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Ten months after the onset of the pandemic, America and Europe remain the most affected regions. Initially, experts predicted that Africa, the poorest continent with the most vulnerable population and health system, would be greatly affected by the ongoing outbreak. However, 240days after the first confirmed case, Africa is among the least affected region, with lower than expected incident cases and mortality. In this review, we discuss possible explanations and reasons for this unexpected low burden of COVID-19 in Africa. We focus on the characteristics of the virus, specificities of the sub-Saharan African population and local environment.

China Warns US "Wrongdoings" Will Imperil Climate Cooperation

Despite the US long wanting 'climate diplomacy' to remain a separate issue apart from its wider disputes with China, such as on trade and human rights, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is now warning deteriorating ties threaten joint efforts to tackle global warming and climate change.

Wang informed Biden's US climate envoy John Kerry during the latter's visit to the Chinese city of Tianjin on Thursday that "climate cooperation cannot be separated from the wider environment" of US-China relations.

The Chinese top diplomat likened the potential for close US-China cooperation on climate to an "oasis" and explained, "But surrounding the oasis is a desert, and the oasis could be desertified very soon."

That's when he concluded while speaking by video-link: "China-U.S. climate co-operation cannot be separated from the wider environment of China-U.S. relations."

"Everyone who met with you will have to spend two weeks in quarantine, but we're willing to pay that price, to discuss co-operation with the U.S. on affairs of mutual concerns," he was quoted further as saying.

It's widely perceived that if one side or the other links climate with the broader tensions besetting US-China relations, it would greatly slow any substantive climate action.

According to Reuters:

Though Wang warned that climate change could now be tied to other diplomatic issues, China has said its efforts to cut emissions and adopt cleaner forms of energy are vital to its ambitious domestic agenda.

"Chinese leaders have long said they are engaged in climate action not because of outside pressure, but because it benefits China and the world at large," said Alex Wang, a climate expert and professor at UCLA.

And additionally Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission called on the US to "correct its wrongdoings" and make efforts to "bring bilateral ties back on the right track."

On the US side, Kerry urged China to do more while also vowing willingness to improve communication with China.

"Secretary Kerry affirmed that the United States remains committed to co-operating with the world to tackle the climate crisis, which must be addressed with the seriousness and urgency that it demands, and encouraged the PRC to take additional steps to reduce emissions," a State Department spokesperson said in a statement.

Mesa County Deputy Clerk charged with second degree burglary

>GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - A warrant was issued for the arrest of 66-year-old Mesa County Deputy Clerk Belinda Knisley by the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Knisley faces the charges of Second Degree Burglary (Class 4 Felony) and Cybercrime (Class 2 Misdemeanor).

EL PASO, Tex. (NewsNation Now) — No longer facing the threat of the Taliban, 3,300 Afghan refugees now temporarily living at Fort Bliss in Texas face a new challenge.

The living conditions appear filthy.

NewsNation obtained exclusive images from the bathrooms and showers refugees at Fort Bliss are using. Much of it is rusted. The floors are muddy. There are flies all over the toilets and sinks.

Those inside say there are 10 people to a room.

“It’s really just prison life,” Mariam Mustafa said. She’s an Afghan-American helping refugees. “You eat, you get fed, you get outside time and you’re back in your bunker.”

Mustafa called the conditions “inhumane.”

“They don’t have just basic necessities like a razor, a toothbrush, cream or sunblock,” she said. “We’re in the same clothes that we were in when we left you.”

That means many of the people at Fort Bliss have been wearing the same clothes for more than two weeks.

“We need things that they have promised, but haven’t received anything yet,” one refugee told NewsNation in Dari. “They give us a list and we’re told that they will visit our rooms. It has been three days — no one has checked on us yet.”

Krish O’Mara Vignarajah runs a nonprofit that helps refugees. She visited Fort Bliss when the base housed unaccompanied minors from Central and South America. Her organization, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, is ready to help.

She said she’s not surprised to hear about the poor conditions, but she was not expecting at least one of the issues that cropped up.

“What surprises me is they may not be receiving basic necessities such as a toothbrush or change of clothes when we’re receiving an outpouring of donations.”

People don't understand what this law really means. The state can't legally enforce an abortion ban, so the state is literally giving random people the ability to enforce the law through civil suits, even if they aren't impacted, and incentivizing it by giving bounties. Literally Stasi, spy on your neighbor tactics.

If the Supreme Court says this is okay, there's nothing stopping any blue state from writing a similar law about 30-round magazines or anything.
