For Arrested NYC Antiquities Dealer, Illegal Trade is Family Business

A New York antiquities dealer who was arrested last month along with his business partner for falsifying provenance records has a family history in the illegal antiquities trade that goes back half a century, the Association for Research into Crimes Against Art, ARCA, revealed.

Erdal Dere and Faisal Khan ran Fortuna Fine Arts Ltd. on Manhattan's Upper East Side Neighborhood and are suspected of having forged documents to support their claims that the artifacts they sold previously belonged to collectors who had died.

However, there were no shortage of warning signs that something suspicious was happening at Fortuna Fine Arts.

Erdal Dere is the son of Selim Dere, who in 1973 was arrested by Turkish police along with his cousin Aziz Dere after looted fragments of a 2000-year-old Greek sarcophagus featuring the 12 labors of Herakles was discovered in Aziz’s Istanbul gold shop, the outlet reported.

After serving their sentences for antiquities smuggling, the two relocated to North America. Aziz moved to Canada and Selim to New York where he initially founded a jewelry store that would ultimately become Fortuna Fine Arts Ltd, the same store where Erdal Dere and Khan were arrested for running their false provenance scheme.

Despite running afoul of the law in Turkey, Selim Dere quickly found his way back into the antiquities trade. In 1984, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston purchased the Statuette of Men, the Moon God, a first century Roman artifact from Dere’s jewelry shop, at the time called West Side Jewelry.

The Boston Museum’s provenance record for the item, only states that it was purchased from Selim, without specifying its history between the first century and arriving in Dere’s Jewelry shop.

Then in 1989, three frieze blocks - an architectural feature which was often stylized in the ancient world - were stolen from an excavation uncovering the Greco-Roman city of Aphrodisias in Turkey's Aydin province.

By chance, four years later, a NYU archaeology professor noticed the block in the window of Dere’s Manhattan shop, now known as Fortuna Fine Arts Ltd. He notified the Turkish authorities who informed the FBI which confiscated the block and repatriated it to Turkey. It remains on display at the Aphrodisias museum in Aydin province.

In cases like the looting of Aphrodisias, stolen cultural heritage isn’t just about national pride but can also directly translate into lost tourism dollars from the local economy.

“Organized crime has many faces. The trafficking of cultural goods is one of them and it is not a glamorous business run by flamboyant gentlemen forgers, but by international criminal networks,” de Bolle said.

Married Democratic Senate candidate Cal Cunningham admits to sexting married strategist, won't drop out of race

North Carolina Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Cal Cunningham, who is a married father of two, admitted that he sent sexual text messages to a public relations strategist, who is also married with children. On Friday night, Cunningham apologized for his behavior.

"I have hurt my family, disappointed my friends, and am deeply sorry," Cunningham said in a statement. "The first step in repairing those relationships is taking complete responsibility, which I do. I ask that my family's privacy be respected in this personal matter. I remain grateful and humbled by the ongoing support that North Carolinians have extended in this campaign, and in the remaining weeks before this election I will continue to work to earn the opportunity to fight for the people of our state."

The sexual text messages were exposed by National File in an article published on Thursday.

"North Carolina Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham is swapping sexts and arranging to meet with the wife of an Army veteran," National File wrote in the article, which features screenshots of the flirty sexts.

The website identified the woman as Arlene Guzman Todd, a "media director of a marijuana public relations company and has been a California State University lecturer." She is married to Jeremy Todd, who like Cunningham is a military veteran, reportedly served 15 years in the Army. The News & Observer reported that Arlene Todd had donated $450 to the Cunningham campaign since April, according to FEC records.

Cunningham allegedly referred to Todd as "historically sexy," and fantasizes about kissing her in the text messages. Todd reportedly wrote, "I want a night with you" via text. She allegedly tells the Senate candidate, "The only thing I want on my to do list is you," and Cunningham reportedly replied, "Sounds so hot and so fun!"

Todd reportedly instructed Cunningham to make up an excuse for his family and ditch a staffer so the two can "kiss a lot."

Publishing Registered Sex Offenders' Home Addresses Before Halloween Is Gratuitous, Unethical, and Reckless

Every year in the run-up to Halloween, Patch publishes maps showing the homes of "registered sex offenders" in various cities. Ostensibly, this information is aimed at helping parents who worry that their children might be molested while trick-or-treating. But research shows that such fears have no basis in reality, and these stories—like the warning signs and restrictions imposed by local police prior to Halloween—mainly serve to stigmatize people who have already completed their sentences, along with their spouses and children, who have committed no crimes at all. That stigma invites harassment, vandalism, and violence. Like much local journalism, the practice of publishing these maps is ill-informed sensationalism masquerading as a public service.

This fall a petition organized by the National Association for Rational Sexual Offense Laws (NARSOL) is urging Patch and other outlets to cut it out. Noting the "total lack of evidence that the publication of these addresses at Halloween keeps children safe," the petition asks news organizations to "cease a hurtful publication practice that has no positive effect at all on child protection or public safety."

The irrationality of that practice is clear once you understand a few basic facts:

1. Sex offender registries include a wide range of people, many of whom were not convicted of crimes against children.

2. Sex offenders stay on the registry long after they have completed their official punishment, even though they are less likely to commit new offenses of the same type than people convicted of other crimes. According to a 2019 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), less than 8 percent of people who had served sentences for rape or sexual assault were rearrested for a similar crime within nine years after they were released. That report also shows that the annual risk of recidivism falls dramatically over time.

3. The vast majority of sexually abused minors—93 percent, according to a 2000 BJS report—are assaulted by relatives, family friends, or other people they already know.

4. The vast majority of convicted sex offenders—86 percent, according to another BJS report—have no prior convictions for this category of crime, so they would not have shown up in registries.

5. There is no evidence that children face a higher risk of sexual assault on Halloween than they do the rest of the year. A 2009 analysis of 67,000 cases, reported in the journal Sexual Abuse, found "no increased rate on or just before Halloween."

The Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) amplifies that last point: "A heightened risk of being sexually abused is NOT one of the dangers children face at Halloween. The simple fact is that there are no significant increases in sex crimes on or around Halloween. There is no 'Halloween effect.' There is no change in the rate of sexual crimes by non-family members during Halloween. That was true both before and after communities enacted laws to restrict the activities of registrants during Halloween."

British Virgin Islands Plans to Make Company Ownership Transparent

Investigative journalists and civil society groups are encouraged by the news that the government of the British Virgin Islands, BVI, – one of the world’s most notorious financial secrecy jurisdictions – plans to make company ownership publicly accessible information.

The news was first revealed in a press release last week by the prime minister’s office, which said that it was working with the U.K. government towards the implementation of a beneficial ownership registry that is “in line with international standards and best practices as they develop globally.”

The Premier of the British overseas territory, Andrew A. Fahie, reiterated his commitment to a public registry, saying that his government “will continue to closely monitor the developments in the international financial services industry and ensure that we remain in compliance with all the relevant requirements as this is important to the Territory’s competitive position.”

He added that this measure would be implemented “within a timeframe that we consider deliverable,” and committed to the standards set forth by the EU’s fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directive, which requires member states to release beneficial ownership registries by 2023.

Transparency International U.K. said in a press release on Wednesday that it welcomed the announcement, and encouraged the U.K. government to publish a more detailed timeline so that all of its overseas jurisdictions follow suit and implement these registers in a timely manner.

“It is vital that the information on these registers is accurate, free to use and made available for full analysis. This would strike a major blow to the corrupt around the world, with an ever diminishing number of places to hide their dirty money,” said Rachel Davies Teka, Head of Advocacy for the organization.

Its press release pointed to a Transparency International study that uncovered 1,107 BVI companies connected to corruption cases, amounting to hundreds of billions worth of funds that had been attained through bribery, rigged procurement, embezzlement, and other financial crimes.

The BVI ranks near the top of the Tax Justice Network’s Financial Secrecy Index, and has served a pivotal role in enabling anonymous ownership conducive to illicit financial flows.

A 2018 BBC investigation found that a quarter of property in England and Wales were owned by BVI registered entities. Those findings, it said, added to concerns that “companies registered in British-controlled tax havens have been used to avoid tax.”

“Every time that there’s a global exposé on illicit finance, the BVI’s name comes up,” said Eva Lee, a campaign leader at the international NGO Global Witness.

“The recent leak of files from FinCEN showed that at least 20% of the occasions when banks in the U.S. raised suspicions of money laundering involved BVI companies, and half the companies exposed by the Panama Papers were registered there,” she said.

OPCW: Investigation Into Two Alleged Syria Chemical Attacks Inconclusive

The organization has been facing an internal crisis over an alleged 2018 chemical attack in Douma, Syria

The international chemical weapons watchdog said on Friday that two investigations into alleged attacks in Syria could not establish whether or not chemicals were used. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) released Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) reports on two alleged attacks, one in Saraqib, Syria, on August 1, 2016, and one in Aleppo, Syria, on November 24, 2018.

The Saraqib incident was an alleged chlorine attack blamed on the Syrian government. The FFM report cited open source material that said around 30 people had been affected and exhibited symptoms, including breathing difficulties and coughing. These sources also “indicated the presence of a substance with an odor similar to that of chlorine.”

Media reports from the day of the alleged attack quoted the Syrian Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, a group of first responders that operate in opposition-held parts of Syria and receive funding from Western governments, including the United States. The White Helmets are also cited in the FFM report, and often cooperate with the OPCW’s investigations.

The FFM could not access the site of the alleged attack in Saraqib and ultimately concluded that the analysis of all available data “did not allow the FFM to establish whether or not chemicals were used as a weapon in the incident that took place in Saraqib.”

The November 2018 incident in Aleppo was an alleged chlorine attack that the Syrian government blamed on opposition forces. According to documents examined by the FFM, between 79 to 125 people were exposed to “an unidentifiable substance around the same time and area, developing

signs and symptoms of a respiratory nature.” None of the victims suffered “debilitating effects and no fatalities occurred.” This information was consistent with interviews the FFM conducted.

Tens of thousands of Israelis protested against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the government he leads in communities throughout Israel Saturday, after the passage of highly contentious legislation this week that banned mass demonstrations as part of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Socially distanced rallies were held in hundreds of locations. One of the groups organizing the demonstrations, the “Black Flags” movement, said its “conservative” data from its ground operatives indicated that over 100,000 people protested throughout the country.

That claim was not confirmed independently, but media reports indicated Saturday’s demonstrations may have drawn in the largest number of people yet in the protests against Netanyahu.

There were multiple reports of protesters being assaulted by opposing activists, with several requiring hospitalization.

Meanwhile, police arrested at least nine people in Tel Aviv and Kfar Saba for allegedly not adhering to health regulations. Hundreds of fines were issued to demonstrators who did not follow rules.

Blue and White MK Miki Haimovich arrived at a protest site at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square, saying she’d come in response to reports police were using violence against protesters, and urged cops to allow activists to demonstrate peacefully.

In reaction to her actions, Likud MK Shlomo Karhi called on his party to demand her dismissal from the Knesset’s Internal Affairs Committee for “protesting against the government.”

New measures passed this week bar Israelis from traveling more than a kilometer from their homes to protest and limit demonstrations to socially distanced groups of 20, although they apparently also allow for multiple groups of 20 in “capsules” in areas with sufficient space for social-distancing between the capsules.

The approval of the restrictions was seen as blow to the weekly demonstrations outside Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem over the premier’s indictment on graft charges, as well as his handling of the pandemic. However, Saturday’s mass turnout throughout the country indicated it may have only served to further galvanize opposition to Netanyahu.

Along with smaller protests held throughout the country, a few hundred people rallied at Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square. In Jerusalem, at Balfour Street outside the prime minister’s residence, where protests have at times drawn tens of thousands, hundreds were demonstrating.

Several incidents of violence against demonstrators were reported; an 81-year-old woman was said to have been shoved to the ground in Jerusalem. Her condition was not immediately known. In northern Tel Aviv, protesters said a woman was assaulted and wounded. She was taken to the city’s Ichilov Medical Center. Police arrested the suspected assailant as well as two other activists after the former claimed they attacked him.

UK’s lead role in 1953 Iran coup d’etat exposed

Unearthed interview of former British spy sheds light on how the overthrow of PM Mohammed Mossadegh unfolded.

A recently discovered transcript of an interview with a British intelligence officer who played a leading role in the 1953 coup that restored powers to the shah of Iran claims that Britain was the driving force behind the overthrow of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh.

On the anniversary of the UK-US-led coup d’etat that removed Iran’s democratically elected leader, an interview with Norman Darbyshire – head of the MI6 spy agency’s “Persia” station in Cyprus at the time – was published.

In his account, Darbyshire said Britain had convinced the US to take part in the coup.

Darbyshire’s comments came from an interview with the creators of an episode of 1985 British series End of Empire. His interview was not used directly in the programme, as he did not want to appear on camera.

The transcript, long forgotten, was recently unearthed during the making of a new documentary called Coup 53, scheduled for release on Wednesday, the 67th anniversary of the coup.

Darbyshire died in 1993. The transcript of his interview was published on Monday by the National Security Archive at George Washington University in the United States.

“Even though it has been an open secret for decades, the UK government has not officially admitted its fundamental role in the coup. Finding the Darbyshire transcript is like finding the smoking gun. It is a historic discovery,” Taghi Amirani, the director of Coup 53, was quoted by the Guardian newspaper as saying.

The coup – known as Operation Ajax – eventually succeeded on August 19, 1953. Mossadegh was tried and kept under house arrest until his death 14 years later.

‘The classical plan’

Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi appointed Mossadegh as prime minister in 1951 after he won the backing of the Iranian parliament.

MI6 and the US Central Intelligence Agency then convinced the shah to back a coup against Mossadegh in 1953.

“The plan would have involved seizure of key points in the city by what units we thought were loyal to the shah … seizure of the radio station etc … The classical plan,” Darbyshire said.

Mossadegh had nationalised the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and MI6 believed Soviet-backed communists would eventually take over the government, according to Darbyshire.

“I really do believe it, because Mossadegh was a fairly weak character,” the spy said. “[O]nce you get highly trained members of the communist party in, it doesn’t take long. We didn’t share the American view that he was acting as a bulwark against communism … We thought he would be pushed by the communists in the long run,” said Darbyshire.

‘Cold feet’

The US was initially uninterested, and Britain did not want to move without Washington.

“In the early months of [19]53 ..] we thought we had enough military units to mount something, but London started getting cold feet,” he said in the interview.

“Unfortunately, the head of SIS [MI6] at the time, General [John] Sinclair knew about as much of the Middle East as a 10-year-old,” Darbyshire added.

When Dwight Eisenhower became president of the US in January 1953, Washington came on board. The next task was to convince the shah, then still young and inexperienced, to back the coup.

Darbyshire said he persuaded the shah’s sister, Princess Ashraf, to fly from Paris to Tehran to talk the reluctant monarch into supporting the coup. “We made it clear that we would pay expenses and when I produced a great wad of notes, her eyes alighted,” he said.

In 1913, an African farmer found something out of the ordinary in Boskop, Africa. It would end up being known as the Boskop Man. The remnants of an ancient, abnormally large skull would send the anthropology community spinning.

Writer, Loren Eiseley, referred to these ancient humanoids as the humans of the future in his book, The Immense Journey :

"It’s all happened already. Back there in the past, ten thousand years ago. The man of the future, with the big brain, the small teeth. He lived in Africa. His brain was bigger than your brain. His face was straight and small, almost a child’s face."

Since then, ancient astronaut theorists have incorporated these big skulls into their theories. Their theories have suggested that these ancient skulls belong to an alien race that visited Earth thousands of years ago, to time traveling, genetically evolved humans from the future.

Despite being the least like our other ancient relatives, like Homo Erectus and Neanderthals, most scientists aren't convinced that these skulls are of an alien origin. Of course, no DNA test has ever been conducted to either confirm or deny the claims of modern scientists and ancient astronaut theorists. But putting all speculation aside, as intriguing as the alien theories are, we should believe the scientists until indisputable evidence emerges.

As for what happened to these ancient humanoids, that could be a bigger mystery than where they came from.

Some in the scientific community believe that these Boskop people were common and roamed large parts of Africa, while others believe they were more rare. With a bigger brain comes more self awareness and reflection, according to some neuroscientists, which could have led to the extinction of the Boskop Man and his ancestors in competition with our more agile and physically superior ancestors.

Other scientists argue that the Boskop Man should have been able to outwit our less intelligent ancestors. These conflicting theories about the big-headed humanoids only create more mystery around their sudden disappearance.

There is the possibility, as pointed out by Gary Lynch and Robert Granger, that such levels of intelligence and self awareness had no real benefit in 10,000 BC, when survival was dependent on particular physical characteristics.

In 2009, for Discover Magazine, they wrote:

"Maybe all that thoughtfulness was of no particular survival value in 10,000 B.C. The great genius of civilization is that it allows individuals to store memory and operating rules outside of their brains, in the world that surrounds them. To this day, there is no settled science to confirm why the Boskop people went extinct. Speculations about the genetic mutations that created them are as perplexing as the reasons for their disappearance. It's no wonder so many theorists have suggested Earth shattering theories about extraterrestrial origins and genetic manipulation. Two of President Trump’s children dubbed their father a “warrior” after he tested positive for COVID-19 early on Friday.

Eric Trump tweeted that his father “is a true warrior” following the diagnosis.

“He will fight through this with the same strength and conviction that he uses to fight for America each and every day. I ask you to join me in praying for his recovery. I have never been more proud of someone and what they have had to endure,” Eric Trump shared.

He also retweeted a pre-recorded video message that the president shared Friday night. Trump shared the video after he arrived at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
