Deutscher Geheimdienst will Überwachung ausweiten

Der deutsche Auslandsgeheimdienst BND wird nach Plänen des Bundeskanzleramts seine Überwachungskapazitäten deutlich ausbauen. Im Fokus steht insbesondere die aus dem Inland ins Ausland übertragene Internetkommunikation, die künftig in den Überwachungskatalog der Agentur aufgenommen werden soll.

Nach monatelangen hitzigen Debatten über den Ausbau des Brüsseler Zensurapparats nach dem Digitaldienstegesetz und der EU-Chatkontrolle hat die Aufmerksamkeit für die Spionageaktivitäten der EU-Kommission etwas nachgelassen. Nun sorgt ein Gesetzentwurf aus dem Kanzleramt, der WDR, NDR und Süddeutscher Zeitung vorliegt, für Aufsehen.

Die geplante Ausweitung der BND-Befugnisse macht eines deutlich: Die deutsche Politik bewegt sich im Gleichschritt mit der Brüsseler Kommission - und geht gegen die Privatsphäre und Kommunikation von Bürgern, Medien und regierungskritischen Organisationen vor.

Eine Erinnerung an den NSA-Skandal

In einem weiteren schweren Schlag für den deutschen Automobilarbeitsmarkt hat Mercedes angekündigt, die Produktion seiner A-Klasse von Rastatt nach Kecskemét, Ungarn, zu verlagern. Während Ungarns Außenminister eine Siegesrunde dreht, kritisiert Deutschlands größte Oppositionspartei die Regierung scharf, da die Anzeichen dafür zunehmen, dass der deutsche Automobilmarkt ins Stocken gerät.

Handelsminister Péter Szijjártó hat den Umzug von Mercedes offiziell bestätigt, schreibt Budapester.

Szijjártó schrieb den Erfolg “einer Wirtschaftspolitik zu, die auf gesundem Menschenverstand und einer stabilen Regierung basiert, die ständig neue Investitionsprojekte von globalen Unternehmen in Amerika, Asien und sogar Deutschland anzieht.”

Die Nachricht wird in Deutschland jedoch nicht begrüßt, da die Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) auf die schlimme wirtschaftliche Situation des Landes hinweist.

Les manifestants soutiennent que ce pacte sapera les prix locaux, exposera les agriculteurs à une concurrence déloyale en raison des normes environnementales plus laxistes du Mercosur et donnera la priorité aux secteurs industriels tels que l'automobile et l'aérospatiale au détriment de l'agriculture rurale, qui souffre déjà de réglementations européennes strictes.

La mobilisation a commencé à s'intensifier début janvier, avec des blocages d'autoroutes et de frontières, dont celle avec l'Espagne.

Malgré une interdiction gouvernementale expresse interdisant les convois de tracteurs et les rassemblements, les agriculteurs ont défié les ordres, entrant dans Paris et atteignant des sites emblématiques tels que l'Arc de Triomphe, les Champs-Élysées, la Tour Eiffel et l'Assemblée nationale.

Les agriculteurs français bloquent les ports en raison d'un accord commercial controversé avec l'UE

Les agriculteurs de toute la France ont continué à bloquer les principales autoroutes et ports pour protester contre un accord commercial entre l'UE et le bloc économique latino-américain, le Mercosur.

Les travailleurs agricoles invoquent la concurrence déloyale des producteurs de viande latino-américains, qui ne sont pas tenus de suivre les règles environnementales strictes de l'UE.

Tôt lundi, quelque 30 tracteurs et 60 manifestants ont dressé une barricade de ballots de paille à l'extérieur des installations pétrolières du port industriel de La Pallice, près de La Rochelle, selon les médias locaux.

Une trentaine de tracteurs ont bloqué l'accès à un site céréalier du port de Bayonne en violation de l'interdiction des rassemblements instaurée par les autorités locales.

150 manifestants ont utilisé des machines agricoles pour ralentir l'activité au port du Havre, un site clé pour les importations alimentaires. Ils se sont appelés "douanes agricoles" (agents des douanes agriculteurs), ouvrant des camions pour vérifier si les marchandises à l'intérieur étaient conformes aux normes de l'UE, mais s'arrêtant avant un blocus complet.

Dans le nord du pays, des dizaines de travailleurs agricoles ont maintenu un barrage routier sur l'autoroute la plus fréquentée de France, l'autoroute A1 entre Paris et Lille.

Les règles du gouvernement français sur l'abattage des troupeaux présentant des cas de dermatose nodulaire contagieuse ont commencé en décembre, mais elles se sont rapidement étendues aux syndicats en colère contre le traité avec le Mercosur. Les travailleurs agricoles en Italie, en Pologne et en Irlande ont également protesté contre l'accord.

Le RN est le plus grand parti d'opposition en France, ce qui constitue une menace majeure pour le président Emmanuel Macron lors des élections de l'année prochaine - car le parti bénéficie d'un large soutien dans tout le pays en raison d'un retour en arrière vers des politiques conservatrices et des opinions anti-immigration.

L'appel de Le Pen devrait se dérouler du 13 janvier au 12 février, avec une décision finale attendue d'ici cet été. En cas d'échec, Le Pen dit que son protégé, Jordan Bardella, président du parti âgé de 30 ans, se présentera à sa place.

Australia’s biggest neo-Nazi group will disband by the end of the week to avoid lengthy jail time as the Albanese government moves to outlaw extremist groups after the Bondi terror attack.

On Tuesday, in an internal announcement from within the neo-Nazi National Socialist Network (NSN) leaked to this masthead, leader Thomas Sewell and his state leadership told members that the organisation would be “disbanded in full” by midnight on Sunday.

The decision came hours after the government released the draft legislation of its new hate speech crackdown, to be debated by parliament next week, which include penalties of up to 15 years’ jail for those found to belong to or support outlawed groups, as well as new offences for radicalising children.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has already signalled that the NSN and Islamist extremist organisation Hizb-ut Tahrir could be listed under the new laws, but currently operated below the threshold for charges.

Experts who track neo-Nazis call the development a big blow for the NSN, but warn the group, which is not renouncing Nazism, is far from done.

In a public statement posted to social media shortly after telling NSN members of the decision, Sewell and his leadership said the new laws would allow the government to disband any organisation that has performed Nazi salutes in the past, and called it the death of political freedom. They signed off “Blood and honour”, a slogan of the Hitler Youth.

The NSN had not yet applied to register its planned federal political party, or state parties – seen as a move to exploit loopholes in hate speech laws, including a coming crackdown in NSW after the group’s rally outside state parliament.

The Australian Electoral Commission has very limited grounds to knock back such an application, given it must stay apolitical.

Experts say the group appears to be planning to continue its “active club” model, where members train in boxing at home gyms and go on group hikes, but without their black shirts uniform.

Far-right researcher Dr Kaz Ross said the new laws had made it inevitable that the NSN would disband officially, but its “solid core of membership will be undeterred”.

“I think there is now a heightened threat of violence”, perhaps in particular from the group’s associates if not its core members, she said.

Recent stunts by the NSN, including ambushing politicians on the federal election trail and secretly running the national anti-immigration rallies March for Australia, have been revealed by this masthead as a co-ordinated neo-Nazi push to funnel more recruits (and money) into their extreme ideologies. The NSN is now aggressively recruiting teenagers through social media propaganda, with the help of the close friend of misogynist influencer Andrew Tate.

Australia’s response to its worst terror attack could collapse after the Opposition Leader Sussan Ley rejected the government’s anti-vilification laws and the Greens complained the proposed hate speech crackdown could crimp the pro-Palestinian protest movement.

Any goodwill between the major parties appeared to evaporate on Thursday when Ley declared Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s reforms to counter antisemitism were nearly unsalvageable, effectively killing off the chance of a bipartisan moment before Ley’s shadow cabinet debated the bill.

The opposition had for weeks called on Labor to adopt in full a report from the nation’s envoy to combat antisemitism, Jillian Segal, which included a proposal for anti-vilification laws.

But a broad range of civil rights groups, legal experts, and transparency advocates have criticised the bill, claiming it was too rushed, too broad, and might have a chilling effect on public discussion about issues such as terrorism and migration that might offend certain racial groups.

‘Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good’: Jewish groups urge Ley to back bill

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry has urged the Coalition to pass Labor’s antisemitism reforms drafted after the Bondi attack, fearing that Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s objections could “allow the perfect to become the enemy of the good”.

The call for unity from a prominent Jewish organisation echoes comments by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese this morning, who told ABC Radio he was “stunned” by the Coalition’s resistance to the proposal after almost a month of demands from the opposition that parliament be recalled.

Support for the bill from the Coalition now seems doomed, after Ley this morning said she had “extremely serious concerns” about the suite of hate speech measures.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry on Thursday issued a statement urging the Coalition to work to pass the bill, which Ley described as “unsalvageable”.

“By all means, seek to amend the bill to remove its shortcomings, but a wholesale rejection of the bill would not at all be warranted. In our view, the defeat of the bill would be a retrograde step,” co-chief executive Peter Wertheim said.

The proposed federal hate speech laws do not canvas the prohibition of public marches and demonstrations, which fall under state laws.

Bureaucrats from the attorney-general’s office told the parliamentary inquiry that it would be up to the courts to determine if an individual phrase was hate speech under the new laws.

Albanese on Thursday morning said it was “somewhat stunning, frankly” that the Coalition was backing away from the legislation after weeks of demands that the laws be debated and passed urgently. The prime minister referenced comments from Ley in the days after the attack in which she demanded parliament be recalled before Christmas, allowing only a few days for legislation to be drafted and distributed for consultation.

“You can’t have it both ways. And it just seems to me, people who were watching the events since December 14 would have seen politics being played by the Coalition. They’re still playing politics, and I’m just stunned that they are saying they will vote against legislation, a number of their members [will], without even looking at it,” Albanese told ABC Radio.

During a press conference on Thursday morning, Ley said she had “extremely serious concerns about the government’s legislation”, suggesting the government adopt the opposition’s proposed changes.

“The legislation does not address the real issues that gave rise to the Bondi attack. It doesn’t address Islamic extremism. It doesn’t address ISIS influence, and it doesn’t address the rise of antisemitism and the associated terrorist threat in Australia,” Ley said.

“From what we have seen so far, it looks pretty unsalvageable. As it stands, the government’s proposal is half-baked, and Australians deserve far better.”

Rio Tinto and Glencore reopen talks on mega-merger

Mining heavyweights Rio Tinto and Glencore have confirmed they are back in early-stage talks over a deal that could see Rio Tinto acquire “some or all” of Glencore, a move that would create the world’s largest miner with a combined market value close to $207bn.

The companies stressed that talks are preliminary, with no agreement on price, structure, management or which assets might be included, and warned there is no certainty a deal will be struck.

This is the second time in just over a year the pair have explored a tie-up. Glencore approached Rio Tinto in late 2024, but those talks failed to gain traction.

The renewed interest comes as miners race to lock in copper and other metals needed for electrification, renewable energy projects and data-heavy infrastructure. That push has driven expansion plans and a string of takeover attempts across the sector, reshaping supply chains that feed everything from power grids to shipyards and offshore projects.

Under UK takeover rules, Rio Tinto has until February 5 to either make a formal offer or walk away.

Investors were split on the news. Glencore’s US-listed shares jumped around 6%, while Rio Tinto’s Australian-listed stock slid more than 6%, reflecting concern over the cost, complexity and execution risk of a deal of this size.

Analysts said the industrial logic is there, but the route will be complicated. “The structure of a possible merger between these two companies is unclear and would likely be complex, but we do believe there is a path to significant value creation for both,” one note said.

Rio Tinto, the world’s largest iron ore producer, carries a market capitalisation of about $142bn. Glencore, a major base metals producer and one of the world’s biggest commodity traders, is valued at roughly $65bn.

BRICS Flexes With China-Led Joint Naval Drills Soon After Maduro Ousting

The multi-national "Will for Peace 2026" naval exercises began Saturday off the coast of Cape Town, hosted by South Africa, and is set to run for one week. It is widely being described as a BRICS and "BRICS+" naval drill and saw a Russian warship arrive off South Africa's primary naval base on Friday.

The Russians joined Chinese and Iranian vessels for the drills, along with other BRICS members Indonesia, Ethiopia and Brazil - which participated as observers. The nation heading up the drill is China, and it's being seen as an attempt of BRICS and Global South countries to flex their collective military might in the wake of the Trump-ordered ousting of Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro. The other members of the bloc - India, Egypt and Saudi Arabia - are not represented at the drills.

Naturally it is especially Iran which could be a ripe target for the next Trump regime change action, as it's not yet gone nuclear. But Tehran wants to showcase its much more powerful nuclear-armed friends China and Russia, which have defense and economic cooperation agreements with the Islamic Republic.

South Africa's defense force has described that the exercises will allow participating navies "to exchange best practices and improve joint operational capabilities, which contributes to the safety of shipping routes and overall regional maritime stability."

This will make already somewhat strained relations with Washington even more delicate for Pretoria. With this US relationship in mind, a separate statement emphasized that the drills were organized and agreed to significantly before last weekend's US strikes on Venezuela.

But tensions have ratcheted particularly after Washington expelled South Africa's ambassador last year and slapped the country with 30% trade tariffs. This market seizure marked the bottom of London’s silver barrel alerting the metals world that this remainder was simply held in London and not available to market.

Latest market data indicate that London vaults at the end of December held 185M oz. (5,750T) of silver that were not claimed by ETFs implying a 45M oz. (1,400T) silver buffer raising London’s nose above the water line.

That London’s silver market may have 1,400T of silver available to market is terrific.

However, the scale of the visible London Silver Problem indicates that intensifying buying of physical silver globally can be expected.

Chinese-Led South African Naval Exercise Slides into Diplomatic Disaster

The Chinese-led BRICs Exercise "Will for Peace 2026," now taking place in Cape Town, is turning into a diplomatic disaster for its host South Africa.

Alongside participants from Russia, China, and the United Arab Emirates, three Iranian warships arrived in False Bay to participate in the exercise, with the Bayandor Class corvette IRINS Naghdi (F82) coming alongside in the Simon’s Town Naval Base, and two converted oil tankers now serving as logistics vessels - IRINS Makran (K441) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (Nedsa, IRIS Shahid Mahdavi (L110-3) anchoring off in False Bay. Iranian personnel took part in dockside parades and inter-Navy sports events which occupied the first two days of the exercise.

But before the sea-going phase of the exercise commenced on January 13, the South African government requested that the Iranians withdraw their active participation from the exercise and become observers instead, a request to which the Iranian acceded.

The South African move was prompted by the realization at this late stage, that diplomatically it did not look good to be aligned with an Iranian regime which by some estimates has now killed 12,000 of its own citizens in anti-government riots. The South Africans also realized that its highly favorable trade position under the African Growth and Opportunity Act was in jeopardy, with the Act is coming before the U.S. House of Representatives this week for its scheduled three-year renewal.

These dangers were already apparent back in September, when The Maritime Executive noted that South African Chief of Staff General Rudzani Maphwanya had visited Tehran to issue an invitation to the exercise, a visit not apparently approved beforehand by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. President Ramaphosa objected to the visit, but did not fire the General for his freelancing in the political arena. The day before Renee Macklin Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, a St. Paul couple were observing ICE agents in St. Paul.

Noah and Judy Levy were told agents were staging at a nearby parking lot. They got in their car and followed when eight SUVs filled with masked and armed men peeled out of the parking lot. After failing to shake the observers, the agents halted their caravan in the middle of traffic and surrounded observers’ cars, threatening them with arrest for impeding law enforcement.

Agents took photos of Levy and other observers’ license plates. Then a masked agent walked up to Judy Levy’s passenger side window and greeted her by name. The couple continued following the caravan and the ICE vehicles turned on Levy’s street.

Google's Vietnam Bet Highlights New Era In Electronics Manufacturing

Google is preparing to start building its most advanced Pixel phones in Vietnam this year, according to Nikkei Asia, a move that reflects the broader effort by U.S. tech firms to reduce their reliance on China. Apple is pursuing a similar strategy in India as both companies work toward more geographically balanced supply chains.

Sources say Google will handle the earliest and most sensitive stages of production for its Pixel, Pixel Pro and Pixel Fold models in Vietnam, while the more affordable Pixel A line will continue to be developed in China. These early production stages, known as new product introductions, involve extensive engineering work, long testing cycles and major investments in manufacturing tools. For suppliers, being selected to participate is seen as a major endorsement of their technical capabilities.

Nikkei says that although Google and Apple have spent years trying to expand manufacturing outside China, they have continued to rely on Chinese facilities for these initial development phases because few other countries have the same depth of experience and infrastructure.

Recent geopolitical and trade tensions, especially surrounding U.S. tariff policy, have added urgency to these efforts. Apple has already increased production capacity in India and Vietnam.

"The goal is to achieve functionality, compatibility and reliability suitable for mass production. If NPI fails, then it means there will be no new product for the year. But thankfully, such a thing has never happened so far," a source with an Apple supplier said.
