UK Government To Create 'British FBI', Roll Out Nationwide Facial Recognition Cameras

The British Home Secretary unveiled plans in Parliament on Jan. 26 for a new National Police Service (NPS), which is modeled on the FBI and will take over the fight against terrorism and organized crime in the United Kingdom.

At the weekend, Shabana Mahmood described the NPS as a “British FBI” and said it would alleviate the burden on local police forces, allowing them to concentrate on issues such as shoplifting and street robbery.

The NPS will replace the National Crime Agency, which covers England and Wales, but it will also have a UK-wide role.

On Monday, the Home Office published a 106-page White Paper that sets out in detail the new police structure and how it would be supported by state-of-the-art technology.

The document says the government would invest 115 million pounds ($157 million) over the next three years “to enable the rapid and responsible adoption of AI and automation technologies by the police.”

A new National Centre for AI in Policing, known as Police.AI, would be created.

There are also plans to roll out facial recognition cameras nationwide to help police catch wanted criminals on watchlists.

The number of facial recognition camera vehicles would be increased from 10 to 50.

“A hundred years ago, fingerprinting was decried as curtailing our civil liberties, but today we could not imagine policing without it,” Mahmood said.

“I have no doubt that the same will prove true of facial recognition technology in the years to come.”

There is currently no dedicated statute governing police use of facial recognition in England and Wales.

Mahmood also announced plans to scrap the existing 43 police constabularies in England and Wales, which would be reorganized into a dozen regional forces.

“Policing is not broken, as some might have us believe,” she told the House of Commons on Monday, “Last year, the police made over three-quarters of a million arrests, five percent more than the year before.”

She said knife crime was down and murder rates in London were at their lowest recorded level.

Earlier this month, Eleanor “Nell” Watson, a leading researcher and adviser on artificial intelligence ethics and transparency, criticized the increased deployment of surveillance technology.

“The UK is constructing infrastructure for a surveillance society while telling itself it is merely catching criminals,” she told The Epoch Times via email.

Mahmood also announced plans to scrap the existing 43 police constabularies in England and Wales, which would be reorganized into a dozen regional forces.

Criticism of ‘Mega-Forces’

The opposition Conservatives’ shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, criticized the plan to reduce the number of police forces from 43 to 12 and said it would create forces that would be too big.

“Such huge forces will be remote from the communities they serve. Resources will be drawn away from villages and towns towards large cities,” Philp said.

He added that the Metropolitan Police, Britain’s largest police force, had the worst crime-solving rates.

“That goes to show that large scale does not automatically deliver better results, and therefore we will oppose the mandated merger of county forces into remote regional mega-forces,” Philp said.

“Over the weekend, the Home Secretary was trailing this proposal as a British FBI,” Scottish National Party (SNP) MP Pete Wishart said.

“While it might indeed be their FBI, British, it most definitely is not, as it applies only to England and Wales.”

“In Scotland, we are immensely proud of our culture and ethos of policing by consent and the fact that we have the lowest crime rates in the whole of the UK. The last thing we want is this creeping Americanization,” Wishart added and demanded to know what powers the NPS would have in Scotland.

Mahmood said NPS would cover the whole of the UK.

“In England and Wales, it will have full operational powers and will be able to carry out its law enforcement activities,” she said.

“But in Scotland and Northern Ireland, it will carry out operations only with the agreement of the legally designated authority.”

The UK is reeling over the allegations that the Jeffrey Epstein trafficking ring would have used Stansted airport with impunity, trafficking women into Britain.

The issue has even been taken up by a former Prime Minister who is calling for a full investigation.

By now, Essex Police has said it is ‘assessing information’ about private flights coming and going from Stansted Airport, after it was featured in the US DOJ’s Epstein files.

This ‘assessing information’ ruse may well mean that the whole business will be quashed.

In fact, the story of Epstein’s airplanes is a saga in itself.

But today, we want to focus on the latest developments regarding this ‘assessing the information’, which is NOT the equivalent of the opening of an investigation.

BBC reported:

“Last year a BBC investigation found 87 flights linked to the convicted sex offender had arrived at or departed from UK airports between the early 1990s and 2018.

Ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote in the New Statesman last week that police ‘urgently’ need to re-examine whether Jeffrey Epstein’s victims were trafficked within and outside of the UK.”

“An Essex Police spokesperson said: ‘We are assessing the information that has emerged in relation to private flights into and out of Stansted Airport following the publication of the US DOJ Epstein files’.”

Three British victims allegedly trafficked appear in Epstein’s records of flights in and out of the UK.

Former PM Brown said the ‘scale of trafficking’ would ‘become apparent’ if an investigation is conducted into these flights.

“He added that Stansted, located around 40 miles away from central London, was one of the airports ‘where women were transferred from one Epstein plane to another’.

Stansted Airport said all private aircraft use entirely independent terminals not operated by Stansted, and the airport does not manage or have any visibility of passenger arrangements on privately operated aircraft.”

In an explosive turn of events, it has been reported that disgraced former Prince Andrew has been arrested.

The former Duke of York, son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and brother to reigning King Charles III, has been arrested on the day of his 66th birthday.

Thames Valley Police arrested Andrew on suspicion of misconduct in public office, and he is in custody.

Police are also searching addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.

The Telegram reported:

“Police have been assessing claims against Mr Mountbatten-Windsor that emerged in the Jeffrey Epstein files, including allegations that he shared sensitive information with the pedophile when he was a UK trade envoy.

Six unmarked police cars and about eight plain-clothed officers, with one carrying a police-issue laptop, were seen arriving at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate just after 8am.”

“An unmarked police car was seen leaving around 30 minutes later, followed by another unmarked police car and then a third car thought to be containing Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor’s security.”

Statement from Thames Valley police:

“As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk.

‘The man remains in police custody at this time.

‘We will not be naming the arrested man, as per national guidance. Please also remember that this case is now active so care should be taken with any publication to avoid being in contempt of court.”

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said: “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.

‘It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence.

‘We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”

London Mayor Khan Under Fire As BBC Exposes Scale Of Grooming Gangs

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is facing renewed criticism after a major BBC investigation found that vulnerable girls as young as 14 are being lured into forced sex by gangs operating across the capital.

The investigation, based on weeks of reporting and interviews with dozens of people, including five survivors of gang-based violence, concluded that exploitation by organised groups is rife in parts of London.

Some victims told the BBC they were raped by multiple men as “payment” for unpaid drug debts run up by gangs that controlled them. Others said they had been groomed solely for sex. The investigation also found that girls were often drawn into criminal activity such as drug dealing, weapons trading, and phone theft before being sexually exploited.

One Metropolitan Police officer described young girls and women as the “lowest rung” within gang hierarchies, saying they were groomed and exploited “for everything.”

Public debate over grooming gangs in the U.K. has often focused on northern towns such as Rotherham and Rochdale. A government-commissioned report last year found that in Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire, there was evidence of “disproportionate numbers of men from Asian ethnic backgrounds amongst suspects for group-based child sexual exploitation.”

Further investigations have found the same in other towns and cities, including Telford, Oxford, Derby, Birmingham, Halifax, Peterborough, and countless others.

Last year, Khan said there was no “indication of […] grooming gangs” of the type seen in Rotherham operating in London. Following the BBC findings, a spokesperson for the mayor said he wanted to support police to tackle “all child sexual exploitation in the capital, including grooming gangs.”

Survivors told the broadcaster how exploitation often targeted girls from broken homes or troubled backgrounds.

Detective Sergeant John Knox, head of the Metropolitan Police child exploitation team in Lambeth and Southwark, said girls inside gangs “cannot say no to sex.”

“Within that gang world, the girls are at the lowest rung and they have to do as they’re told. And that includes sexually,” he said, adding that if a girl cannot refuse, “she’s being raped and that’s how we look at it as the police.”

Knox estimates at least 60 children in his south London area are currently being exploited by gangs, some as young as 13.

The BBC findings prompted sharp criticism from political opponents.

Susan Hall, leader of the Conservatives in the London Assembly, said the report was “shocking” and accused the mayor of dismissing concerns.

Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy wrote that the mayor had claimed there were no rape gangs in London and that “everyone knew that was nonsense.”

Last month, Hall pressed the mayor on whether grooming gangs were operating in London and called for funding for a dedicated inquiry. She accused Khan of previously dismissing her concerns, telling him, “I asked if we had grooming gangs in London. You dismissed my question by saying you didn’t know what I meant. I have to tell you, the rape victims knew exactly what I was talking about.”

Hall urged the mayor to apologize to victims who, she said, felt their experiences had been downplayed.

Khan refused to concede the point, replying during the exchange that the issue was too serious to “play party politics.”

Previously, he argued that the “specific type of systemic cases” seen in some northern towns were not the same as the more “complex” patterns of exploitation in London, refusing to acknowledge that the phenomenon of Asian grooming gangs raping White girls as seen across many U.K. cities was not prevalent on the London scene.

In October, the Metropolitan Police announced it will re-examine at least 1,200 child sexual exploitation cases following a national review, and previously confirmed it was reviewing 9,000 cases spanning 15 years.

An independent inquiry into grooming gangs chaired by Baroness Longfield is expected to begin later this year, with the Home Office stating it will have full powers to compel evidence and conduct local investigations.

LONDON (AP) – Police searched the former home of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor again on Friday, a day after he was arrested and held in custody for nearly 11 hours on suspicion of misconduct in public office related to his friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Following one of the most tumultuous days in the modern history of Britain’s royal family, the former Prince Andrew is back at his new residence on the Sandringham estate, King Charles III ‘s private retreat, which is around 115 miles (185 kilometers) north of London.

Police have concluded their search at Wood Farm, where Mountbatten-Windsor is living while waiting for his new home nearby, Marsh Farm, to be ready.

They are still searching Royal Lodge, his 30-room former home in the parkland near Windsor Castle, just west of the capital, where the king’s younger brother had lived for decades until his eviction earlier this month. Unmarked vans, believed to be police vehicles, have been entering the grounds throughout Friday morning.

Mountbatten-Windsor, who was pictured slouched in the back of his chauffeur-driven car following his release Thursday evening from a police station near Sandringham, remains under investigation, which means he has neither been charged nor exonerated by Thames Valley Police, the force responsible for areas west of London.

His arrest follows years of allegations over his links with Epstein, who took his own life in a New York jail in 2019. The accusation at the heart of his arrest is that Mountbatten-Windsor – who was known as Prince Andrew until October when his brother stripped him of his titles and honors and banished him from Royal Lodge – shared confidential trade information with the disgraced financier when he was a trade envoy for the U.K.

Specifically, emails released last month by the U.S. Department of Justice appeared to show Mountbatten-Windsor sharing reports of official visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore.

One, dated November 2010, appeared to be forwarded by Andrew five minutes after he had received it. Another a few weeks later appeared to show him sending Epstein a confidential brief on investment opportunities in the reconstruction of Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Thames Valley Police has previously said it was also reviewing allegations that a woman was trafficked to the U.K. by Epstein to have a sexual encounter with Andrew. Thursday’s arrest had nothing to do with that.

Other police forces are also conducting their own investigations into Epstein’s links to the U.K., including the assessment of flight logs at airports, large and small. They are coordinating their work within a national group.

On Friday, London’s Metropolitan Police said it was assessing, with the help of U.S. counterparts, whether the capital’s airports, which include Heathrow, “may have been used to facilitate human trafficking and sexual exploitation.”

It also said that it’s asking past and present officers who protected Mountbatten-Windsor to “consider carefully” whether they saw or heard anything that may be relevant to the investigations.

As of now, it said no new criminal allegations have been made regarding sexual offenses within its jurisdiction.

Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing in his association with Epstein but has not commented on the most recent allegations that have emerged with the release of the so-called Epstein files.

Police swept into the grounds of Mountbatten-Windsor’s home to arrest him at 8 a.m. Thursday – his 66th birthday – before taking him to Aylsham police station for questioning.

Besides the ex-ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, and disgraced former Prince Andrew, his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, is also watching her whole life crumble over her close relationship with the convicted sex offender.

And it was hard on Fergie, as news arose that she checked herself into the most expensive ‘wellness clinic’ in the world.

“​The former Duchess of York, 66, fled the UK as she and her ex-husband became embroiled in the growing Epstein scandal which culminated in his arrest on Thursday.

While Andrew was photographed repeatedly in Windsor and then on the Sandringham estate, Ms. Ferguson has not been seen in public since her fleeting appearance at her granddaughter Athena’s Christening at St James’s Palace on December 12.”

Reportedly, Ferguson has been hiding out at the world-renowned, £13,000-a-day Paracelsus Recovery Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland, for over a month now.

Former UK ambassador Mandelson arrested after Epstein revelations

LONDON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Former British ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mandelson has been arrested by London police on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following revelations over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson, 72, was fired from the most prestigious posting in Britain's diplomatic service in September, when the depth of his friendship with Epstein started to become clear.

Police earlier this month began a criminal investigation into Mandelson after Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government passed on communications between the former ambassador and Epstein.

"Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement relating to an investigation into a former government minister.

Emails between Mandelson and Epstein, released by the U.S. Department of Justice in late January, showed the two men had a closer relationship than had been publicly known, and Mandelson had shared information with the financier when he was a minister in former Prime Minister Gordon Brown's government.

Mandelson, who this month resigned from Starmer's Labour Party and quit his position in parliament's upper chamber, has previously said he "very deeply" regretted his past association with Epstein. But he has not commented publicly or responded to messages seeking comment on the latest revelations.

Last week, King Charles' younger brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was also arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office over allegations he sent confidential government documents to Epstein. He has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

The Metropolitan Police has so far not commented on the viral video of a female police officer defending freedom of speech surrounded by a crowd of angry Muslim men in Whitechapel but it has questions to answer.

This is the moment a police officer defends a Christian preacher in Whitechapel and is told: “This is a Muslim area.”

The confrontation sees a female Met Police officer being surrounded by males and telling them: “In this country, we have freedom of speech.”

She continued: “I understand that you guys don’t want to hear it, so I would just recommend that you walk away and don’t listen to him. He’s not in your home.”

Questions for the Met include: why is it that this police officer understands English law in a way that the three Met police officers who arrested Christian street preacher, John Sherwood, in Uxbridge in 2021 apparently did not?

In 2022, Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court acquitted Pastor Sherwood of the public order offence with which the Crown Prosecution Service had charged him. The court upheld his freedom “to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority” as set out in Article 10 of the 1998 Human Rights Act.

Christian Today reported on the case at the time:

On April 23rd 2021 Metropolitan police officers arrested the pastor near Uxbridge tube station.

He had been preaching on Genesis 1 verse 27 and said that the family unit as ordained by God consisted of a father and a mother, not two fathers or two mothers.

Some passers-by complained to the police that he was using homophobic hate speech.

The pastor, then 71, was arrested, held overnight at a police station and in September was charged under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which outlaws “threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress”.

Is it not the case that if the police officer involved in the Whitechapel confrontation had been called to the scene in Uxbridge in 2021, the Met would not have suffered the humiliation of losing in court? Pastor Sherwood would never have been arrested in the first place.

The question now arises for the Met: will the exemplary and courageous conduct of this police officer be used in training sessions for officers and recruits on how to deal with vexatious anti-free-speech complaints against Christian street preachers and others who are lawfully expressing their views in public?

Furthermore, how does the Met reward frontline police officers who earn the respect of the law-abiding public in the way that this particular officer has for defending traditional British freedom of speech?

The Met might be advised to review the exchange between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US Vice President JD Vance in the Oval Office last year.

After Vance raised concerns about infringements to freedom of speech in the UK, Starmer said:

We’ve had free speech for a very very long time in the United Kingdom and it will last for a very very long time. … In relation to free speech in the UK, I’m very proud of our history there.

Is the Met similarly proud of the UK’s free speech history? If so, surely it would be keen to answer the questions above.

Another Migrant Sex Offender Granted Asylum In Britain Despite Skipping Bail In Europe

An Afghan man accused of rape in Austria jumped bail and fled to Britain, where he was granted asylum and lived freely for over six years.

It is the second such case to be exposed this month after a similar incident involving a Syrian convicted of sexually assaulting a teenager in Germany, who failed to attend his probation hearings and illegally entered the U.K.

As revealed by The Sun newspaper, Omar Ali Noori, 31, arrived illegally in Britain in 2019 after fleeing Austria. He had been arrested in connection with the rape of a woman in Linz in 2018, but absconded while on bail before proceedings concluded.

Despite this, he was granted indefinite leave to remain for five years by the Home Office in 2023. His 23-year-old wife joined him in Britain last year.

Court records cited during an extradition hearing revealed that Noori had used four identities and five different dates of birth on official documents.

At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Judge Neeta Minhas ordered that Noori, currently held at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London, be returned to Austria to serve a three-year prison sentence for absconding, in addition to facing the rape charge.

Judge Minhas said, “Noori was directly asked if he had committed or been accused of an offence in any country or whether he had been detained in any country. His response to both questions was in the negative. This was clearly not accurate. I find that Noori is a fugitive.”

Noori is now appealing his extradition back to Austria.

An almost mirror case was reported earlier this month after it emerged that Syrian national Azizadeen Alsheikh Suliman, 34, was convicted in Germany of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Osnabrück in 2022.

According to German media reports, he approached the victim in the city center, under the pretext of asking for a cigarette, before attempting to kiss her and later sexually assaulting her in a nearby courtyard. He was also convicted of supplying drugs to a minor.

German courts handed Suliman a two-year suspended custodial sentence, conditional on probation, and ordered him to pay €3,000 in compensation to the victim. He later breached the terms of his probation and left Germany, prompting the issuance of a European arrest warrant.

Suliman subsequently travelled to Britain via a small boat across the English Channel. He applied for asylum using a different spelling of his name, enabling him to avoid detection for several years. He was housed in taxpayer-funded accommodation in the Greater Manchester area, where he lived with his wife and child before being identified by authorities.

An extradition request was upheld earlier this month, but has been appealed by Suliman. His legal team argues that he faces a risk to his life if returned to Germany because of a feud originating in Syria involving his cousin, and that extradition would breach Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights by separating him from his wife and child.

It is likely that Noori’s appeal will also focus on human rights legislation.

In the clip, no direct dialogue is heard, but the intent is clear as the resident methodically removes the snares, preventing what could have been a slaughter of iconic birds.

This incident echoes similar scenes across the UK. One video documents an RSPCA officer confronting a migrant family suspected of poaching and cooking a large white bird, possibly a swan.

She inspects the pot: “You can see bones in this bird because he isn’t chicken so I am concerned. There are laws against people taking animals… It’s very serious. It’s very serious if that happens.”

Examining the bin, she notes: “You see problem is there are lot of big white feathers here.”

The family claims the birds were bought and released during a children’s chase game, but the officer warns: “What I need to make sure is everybody here knows that they’re not allowed to take anything from the park. I’m not saying you did.”
