Another unimaginable crime in the violence-ridden island.

Zoos are important institutions that help people know animals and learn about them, leading them to love and respect the natural world.

Zoos should not be places for crimes of opportunity.

But today, tragedy struck a Cambridgeshire zoo and led to a three-year-old boy being rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, after he was thrown into a crocodile enclosure.

The Telegraph reported:

“Police said they had arrested a 30-year-old British man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident at Johnsons Zoo, near Huntingdon, on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect and the boy, who was taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke’s hospital with serious injuries, were not believed to have known each other, officers added.”

When we learn that UK authorities are NOT divulging the identity of the suspect other than he is ‘a UK man’ is leading many to imagine that this is yet another contribution from Britain’s open borders policy.

This does not have to be the case, of course – but why else would they withhold the identity?

A man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a three-year-old boy ended up in a crocodile enclosure has been released because he is not fit to be interviewed, police have said.

The 30-year-old man from Norfolk has been bailed while detectives from the major crimes unit conduct further inquiries, Cambridgeshire police said.

The force said officers were called to Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdonshire at 1.24pm on Thursday over “reports of an incident involving a three-year-old boy, during which he ended up in the crocodile enclosure”.

The boy was pulled out of the enclosure by staff from the zoo. He was taken to Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition, police said.

DI Verity McCann said: “Our inquiries are ongoing as we continue to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident. Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time.”

The 30-year-old man, who is not known to the victim, has been bailed until 18 September.

A villager, who did not want to be named, told PA Media that the zoo owner’s wife, Tracey Johnson, jumped into the enclosure to try to save the child.

The director of the National Centre For Reptile Welfare, Chris Newman, said Johnson had shown remarkable bravery.

He told the BBC: “I know Tracey very well and she’s a lovely lady and it’s nothing more than I’d expect from her.

“She’d always put her own life at risk to save someone else. She’s an extraordinary lady and very brave.”

He said he had been told Johnson was not injured.

“She put herself in immense danger … I’m not sure if she was up and jumped in or if she was downstairs doing something with the animals when this happened,” he said.

In a statement posted on social media, the Johnsons said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today.

“Out of respect to the family, our tropical house will remain closed until further notice. If you have any questions about the incident, please direct inquiries to Cambridgeshire police constabulary.

“The rest of the site will remain open as normal.”

According to its website, the zoo is home to “over 100 fascinating animals” including African lions, Bengal tigers and crocodiles. The zoo’s two largest crocodiles are called Romeo and Cuddles, the zoo says on its Facebook page.

Charlotte Lowe, a Huntingdonshire district councillor, said she “can’t fathom” how the boy ended up in the crocodile enclosure.

Speaking outside the attraction on Thursday, Lowe, the councillor for Warboys ward, said: “I can’t fathom how it’s happened because they’ve got all the right protection and safety equipment, for want of a better word, in there.”

Ben Obese-Jecty, the MP for Huntingdon, said he had been communicating with senior officers, who were treating it as a critical incident.

“This is now a live criminal investigation and I would ask people to refrain from speculation online,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the young victim and his family during a hugely traumatic and difficult time.”

Lamuye also serves on the advisory board of the Power of Pop Fund, launched by Comic Relief. The fund has directed almost £5 million to narrative change organisations seeking to use media to reframe the debate on migration.

She has confirmed her role in her own writing and stated that "entertainment and media holds influence and power to make real change".

She has additionally acted as a facilitator for Media Movers, a migration messaging group run by the charity Heard.

Heard has received funding from the Power of Pop scheme and previously lobbied producers of a BBC children's show to "impact the framing of migration".

Rare 1776 Declaration of Independence discovered at The National Archives in London

A rare 1776 printing of the US Declaration of Independence - one of just 11 known to survive and the only copy outside the United States - has been discovered at The National Archives in Kew.

Printed in Exeter, New Hampshire, between 16-19 July 1776, copies like this were produced to spread news of independence quickly across the colonies. They were often carried on ships to rally support for the revolutionary cause.

The 'secret' copy of the Declaration of Independence

This copy of the Declaration of Independence was found by one of our incredible volunteers within papers seized from the American privateer (a private vessel commissioned by a government to attack enemy ships) the Dalton of Newburyport, off the coast of Portugal in late 1776.

The Declaration was found while cataloguing the correspondence of Captain Thomas Fitzherbert of HMS Raisonable from January 1777.

The letter referred to papers seized from the American privateer, the Dalton of Newburyport off the coast of Portugal. One item described simply as ‘another document’ turned out, on inspection, to be a rare Exeter-printed Declaration of Independence.

“Cock Blocked”

The phrase is suddenly everywhere among senior appointees, and what its spread reveals about who is really winning in Washington.

The short version. A crude phrase, cock blocked, has become the house idiom of this administration’s senior appointees, and it is worth taking seriously. The word is evidence that the permanent bureaucracy is quietly winning. The populist agenda is being obstructed from below by career staff and, more consequentially, captured from above by the very industries it promised to confront. Three fights, over talc, glyphosate, and atrazine, show the machinery at work.

Even the fact that women now use a phrase once reserved for locker rooms is a clue to how thoroughly this bureaucratic culture has permeated the administration.

I keep hearing the same unfamiliar phrase. This is something new. New, at least, in my experience working at the fringes of Washington, DC, Beltway culture for decades.

It comes up on secure phone calls and in television green rooms, over dinner in Washington, and in the hallway after a congressional hearing. It comes from people who run agencies, sub-agencies, and offices whose initials most Americans have never heard of. Serious people with real titles and real mandates. Yet the phrase they keep reaching for, over and over, to describe the experience of trying to do the jobs they were appointed to do, is that they have been “cock blocked.”

The first time I heard it, I was a little shocked as I had literally never heard it before. Then, the next few times I heard it, I assumed I had misheard, or that it was simply a stray habit from someone with a locker-room streak. It was not. It has become the house idiom of a particular group of senior officials, and I do not remember that being true even a couple of years ago. So I started paying attention. Where did the term come from? Why has it suddenly spread through this crowd? And what does its spread tell us about the people using it?

Where the word comes from

The term is older than most people assume.

It use is documented in Black American speech dating back to the early 1970s. A linguist named Edith Folb recorded it in 1972, in a study of the argot of Black teenagers in South Central Los Angeles that later grew into her 1980 book. In that first documented sense, it crudely meant what the words suggest: interfering with a man’s attempt to win over a woman, even when the person doing the interfering had no interest in her himself.

From there, it traveled the way a great deal of American slang travels. It moved through popular music, up through hip-hop in the 1980s and 1990s, out into ordinary college-age and male conversation, and by the 2000s into sitcoms, movies, and endless comedy podcasts. Somewhere along that road, it did what coarse slang almost always does with time. It got tamer.

The sexual meaning drained out of it, and it became a general word for being deliberately and pettily obstructed by someone who had no business getting involved. By the 2010s, a person could say they had been cock blocked out of a parking space, and nobody blinked (except maybe me). The metaphor was dead, in the same way that “screwed” and “sucks” are dead metaphors. Technically vulgar. In practice, they are part of the furniture.

Why they are saying it now

So the term is not new. Neither is its use to describe obstruction at work. What is new is this particular group of people, the nation’s conservative political appointees, saying it out loud with government badges hanging around their necks. Words like this do not spread through a group without a reason.

28-Year-Old Radical Arrested for Bloody Assassination of 78-Year-Old British Conservative Ann Widdecombe

8-year-old former Tory minister and Brexit Party MEP Ann Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor on July 9th. According to authorities at the time the popular conservative suffered ‘serious injuries’ causing her brutal death. She was murdered on July 8th.

She had been due to appear via Zoom on a Channel 5 program that afternoon, but last made contact with the production team at 12:19 pm and failed to join the call.

The assassin from Rotherham drove his car to her home and rang the bell. When the elderly woman answered, the wicked leftist pushed his way into her home and bludgeoned her to death.

At first, local Devon and Cornwall Police alleged the murder was not politically motivated, but that call was obviously wrong.

Reform UK party, on their part, insisted that the attack may have been motivated by Widdecombe’s politics – a claim that was later vindicated.

Neighbors and sources have portrayed him as withdrawn and unremarkable in public life

Officials later announced that the death was being treated as terrorism.

Police found newspaper clippings about Nigel Farage and Reform UK (a right-wing populist party) in his home. This discovery contributed to counter-terrorism police becoming involved in the inquiry.

The UK’s Counter-terrorism police took control of the investigation into her death after ‘new information and evidence’ came to light.

On Monday, authorities arrested Joshua Kerry. The 28-year-old alleged assassin will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court Tuesday morning.

Russian Frigate Conducts Live-Fire Exercise Off UK Coast as Royal Navy Watches

The Russian frigate Neutrashimy, which has just taken up position, it appears, in the English Channel, caused a stir on Monday, July 20, when the vessel conducted a live-fire gunnery exercise off the coast of the UK. The vessel was being observed by both the Royal Navy and the French military, reports the BBC.

Russia has had warships in the area of the Channel for months, escorting tankers and other strategic vessels. Most recently, it was the Russian frigate RFS Admiral Grigorovich (4,000 tons displacement) that had been observed in the Channel. At times, the warship appeared to be drifting possibly to conserve fuel. It, however, caused its own media stir when it fired warning shots at a private boat that it thought was coming too close for comfort.

RFS Admiral Grigorovich was observed returning to Kaliningrad on July 16. The following day, the UK’s Sky News reported that the Neustrashimy had been seen east of Clacton-on-Sea, north of the Channel, and not far from Felixstowe. It appeared to be receiving fuel and stores from a Russian supply ship.

HMS Tyne, a River-class offshore patrol vessel, was assigned to shadow the Russian frigate. Commissioned in 1993, the Neutrashimy is slightly larger (4,300 tons displacement) but largely comparable to the frigate she appears to have replaced. She is one of only two vessels in a class of ships that Russia had planned to build but canceled a third vessel.

A spokesperson for the UK’s Ministry of Defence confirmed to the BBC that the Royal Navy was observing the frigate today. According to the report, she was approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast near Portsmouth when she informed HMS Tyne that she was going to conduct the artillery exercise. BBC reports the Russians recommended the Royal Navy vessel move to a safer distance before the 30-minute exercise. The BBC also reports that a French aircraft made radio contact with the Russian frigate to clarify what it would be doing.

The exercise came the same day as the UK government turned over, with Sir Keir Starmer officially resigning as Prime Minister. The King asked Labour Party politician and former Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, to form the new government.

Under Starmer, the UK had finally moved to crack down on the Russian shadow fleet after a long debate on how to enact the efforts. The UK stopped and seized a shadow fleet tanker that it said was stateless. The captain of the vessel has been ordered to stand trial later this year, with the UK alleging he was aware and responsible for sanction violations by transporting Russian oil.

UK Scraps Plans To Replace Destroyers With Focus On Drone Warships

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) – Britain will scrap plans to replace its aging destroyers and will instead procure at least six “Common Combat Vessels” to serve as control hubs for uncrewed systems, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday.

The Royal Navy’s six Type 45 destroyers are due to be retired by the end of 2038, and original plans envisioned them being replaced by a next-generation Type 83 class.

However, under the long-awaited Defence Investment Plan, the warships will now be replaced by hybrid Common Combat Vessels (CCV), reflecting a broader shift towards drone warfare and frontline capabilities.

“These Common Combat Vessels will provide our dedicated sailors with hybrid ships that are designed and built for the increasing threats we face,” Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis said in a statement.

“Developed with exceptional British innovators, the new ships will be British-built, supporting jobs across the nation and giving the Royal Navy a capability built for modern warfare.”

The ministry said the CCVs would coordinate uncrewed systems in the air, on the surface and under the sea.

Delivery was expected from the early 2030s and when in service the vessels would work alongside crewed frigates as well as other planned autonomous vessels.

Earlier this month, former defense minister John Healey stepped down after disagreements over the Defence Investment Plan, which will ?lay out the funding for military equipment and services. He said the government had failed to commit the resources needed to keep Britain safe.

Since taking over, Jarvis has sought to refocus the plan on near-term priorities, including new high-speed boats for commandos and advanced strike drones.

Housing Secretary Steve Reed said on Sunday that the long-awaited strategy would be unveiled within days.

“We have to be ready for any future war and what that will be like, not whatever the last war was like,” Reed told Sky News.

Mixed Messages for Maritime in the Refreshed UK Government

There are mixed messages for the maritime community in the appointment of ministers to the government of the UK’s latest Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Prime Minister Burnham has been described by President Trump as an "extremely liberal" mayor of a town. But it would also be fair to describe him as a pragmatic and experienced minister and politician, albeit with little exposure to defense, foreign affairs or trade matters. Hence his appointment of ministers in these areas is an indication of the direction of travel he is likely to take.

Starting with the most important appointment, John Healey - the Defence Secretary who resigned because of the inadequate funding of last month’s Defence Investment Plan - has been brought back into government and appointed as Chancellor of Exchequer. Given that Healey resigned because he thought the defense funding deficit jeopardized national security, he will be keen to find extra money to fill immediate needs.

Additionally, the new Burnham government - once settled in - can be expected to set out funding allocations to meet NATO short to medium commitments. But potentially the new Chancellor of Exchequer could go further. When he resigned, John Healey complained that the Defence Investment Plan fell ‘well short of what is required for defence at this dangerous time’, as had been set out in the Strategic Defence Review. The Defence Investment Plan balked at fully funding the Strategic Defence Review, and the Chancellor will be inclined to find the money to fund it fully.

Increased defense spending is likely to be accompanied by a desire to focus on deals which benefit UK companies such as shipbuilders and missile manufacturers, and on bilateral projects with European NATO partners. Thanks to AUKUS and the continuing close cooperation on nuclear and intelligence matters, there will still be heavy emphasis on US-UK projects. But the balance in defense spending is likely to shift subtly over time towards UK and European contractors as the inevitable consequences of America First policies take root.

At variance with this, Prime Minister Burnham has made some contrarian cabinet selections in order to keep senior figures in government who might be politically dangerous if pushed out of government, most obviously in the appointment of left-of-center Ed Milliband as Foreign Secretary. Based on his previous voting record and a deep back-history of dislike for President Trump, Milliband will not be keen to join American war-fighting efforts in the Middle East, and was apparently one of the strongest critics of American action in the Gulf under the Starmer government.

Replacement of the well-respected Dan Jarvis by Wes Streeting as Defence Minister was also a particularly curious choice. Unlike Jarvis, late of the Parachute Regiment, Streeting has acknowledged he has no background in defense; he might also be considered sympathetic to recognizing the greater importance of government spending on health and welfare. He is a competent minister, but perhaps has been positioned to dilute the clamor for more defense spending.

The new government is pledged to honor the Labour Party 2024 manifesto commitments. But it will tack in different ways in other policy areas relating to the maritime arena, when compared with the previous government under Prime Minister Starmer.

The new prime minister has dispensed with the services of Attorney General Richard Hermer, whose devotion to his particular interpretation of international law drove the last government to press forward with the now-abandoned transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The new government may or may not revive the deal; the question remains open.

Hermer-inspired legal restraints, underwritten by Ed Milliband, were also behind the Starmer government’s initial restrictions on the use of US bases on UK soil, and also delayed for years the launching of seizure operations against Russian dark fleet tankers.

With Ed Milliband moved on from the role where he oversaw – and prevented – further oil and gas field development, there is likely to be a revival of the offshore North Sea oil industry. But it looks likely this may only be temporary, giving the green-light to projects already under way or which can be tied into existing infrastructure. Exploitation of the still considerable development potential of North Sea oil and gas probably needs to wait for a general election - providing it delivers a new party in government.
