As SoftBank Group's Vision Fund looks to invest in Israel's cybersecurity startups run by military veterans, it has turned to a former chief of the country's legendary spy agency to navigate the scene.

Yossi Cohen, who had retired as director of the Mossad, joined the fund in July in an advisory role. The Vision Fund is counting on Cohen's extensive connections cultivated through his years leading the intelligence agency to identify promising technology companies, many of which have links to Israel's military. The world's top venture capital fund is turning its sights to Israel's booming tech industry as the value of its holdings in Chinese companies plunge amid Beijing's crackdown on tech companies. The fund is also counting on Cohen's intel on the Middle East as it looks for more investors. In particular, Tokyo-based SoftBank seeks to expand its cybersecurity portfolio. SoftBank is already ramping up investments in Israel. IoT startup Wiliot said in late July that it received $200 million in a Series C funding round led by the Vision Fund 2. Wiliot's sensor tags run on radio frequency energy from their surroundings instead of batteries. The tags can collect such data as temperature and humidity, and they have already been shipped for use in pharmaceutical and retail logistics chains. There may be more to Cohen's appointment than tapping Israel's startup scene. Relations between Israel and the UAE have been improving, with Israel opening an embassy in Abu Dhabi. 2 Congress members fly to Kabul amid choatic evacuation

Two members of Congress flew unannounced into Kabul airport in the middle of the ongoing chaotic evacuation Tuesday, stunning State Department and U.S. military personnel who had to divert resources to provide security and information to the lawmakers, U.S. officials said.

Officials said Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., and Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Mich., flew in on a charter aircraft and were on the ground at the Kabul airport for several hours. Officials said the two men were flying out of Kabul on another charter aircraft, prompting officials to complain that they were taking seats that could have gone to other Americans or Afghans fleeing the country.

Two officials familiar with the flight said that State Department, Defense Department and White House officials were furious about the incident because it was done without coordination with diplomats or military commanders directing the evacuation.

The U.S. military found out about the visit as the legislators’ aircraft was inbound to Kabul, according to the officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing military operations.

The Associated Press reached out to the offices of Moulton and Meijer but did not receive any immediate comment. Moulton served in the Marine Corps.

One senior U.S. official said the administration saw the lawmakers’ visit as manifestly unhelpful and other officials said the visit was viewed as a distraction for troops and commanders at the airport who are waging a race against time to evacuate thousands of Americans, at-risk Afghans and others as quickly as possible.
