Hello /o/. I'm a southern boy, and I had an idea. I was trying to think of a job that I'd like that would make a rather fat sum and still be entertaining. I gravitated to the idea of going to flight school and learning how to fly. Seems like it would be a lot of fun, but I'm a little stuck. I was wondering if I should go for learning to operate a helicopter or an airplane? Or maybe even another kind of aircraft job (do you have any ideas?) I live an equal distance from the airport and from the hospital, a handful of miles, less than 20 minutes. I don't exactly know which one would make more money, or be better for a lazy kid like me. Though I do like a little bit of zest and excitement.

I'd love your input.

Plane over heli any day. Planes are much, much safer. Your engine fails, you can glide at least to a certain degree with little to no skill. Helicopter engine fails, you are dropping like a rock and you get one, two if you are lucky, chance to pull off a maneuer that has been only described to you but never tried in practice because it''s too dangerous. Not to mention plane pilots generally have calmer jobs than heli polots.

Cost of school is high and once you get it, it will take a while to get the high paying jobs from the really big companies, or you could just do it for a few years before selling yourself to China where they are in need of pilots badly and are paying very well. Planes are safer but if you go China, practice your English Chinese by going to China Town and understand their broken English.

Interesting, I knew the school would be a little bit expensive. I wonder if I could get help to pay since I'm from a poor family. I know my state does that (TN), but for 2 years of public university free. I didn't think I would be working for the Chinese, but I could try to make it work. I didn't mind where I worked as long as I could get enough money to feed myself and get a new house someday.

I'm a bit of a newfag when it comes to cars, but I came onto this board expecting most people to hate crossovers with a burning passion, and I wasn't disappointed. I can certainly understand why. Most of them, especially the modern ones, are ugly as sin, less fuel efficient than sedans, and don't handle as well. They have a little more cargo space than a sedan but not nearly as much as a proper SUV, they have AWD/4WD as an option but generally not enough clearance to make use of it in true off-road situations. Unibody rather than body-on-frame means most don't have the durability to be true offroad vehicles, either. And on top of that, it's the quintessential normalfag body style, which means anons have a duty to hate it out of sheer contrarianism. All that being said, do you think it's possible to make a non-shit crossover, or is the whole class a failure out of the gate? If it is possible, can it be done in the current market, or would it require someone to physically remove all the EPA/NHTSA regulations shitting up the market first?

Personally, I think there's potential, but only if you change the design philosophy. Right now, crossovers are tall sedans LARPing as SUVs, making them a confused mess that doesn't do anything well. Instead, you should approach the design of a crossover as a station wagon for big guys. Focus on the added cargo space for people that need to haul more shit around but aren't construction workers, instead of pretending it's an offroad car. A higher cabin, not to clear debris and terrain, but for tall fuckers that can't sit comfortably in sedans. Maybe offer AWD or 4WD as an option, but not for anything offroad, just for people in rural and snowy areas that could benefit from the extra traction in the winter.

I think picrelated, the 3rd generation RAV4, is a decent example of a crossover done "right." It has good gas mileage for what it is, 22 city/28 highway compared to the same year Camry's 22/32. 73 cubic feet of cargo space standard, which is about as much as other crossovers have with the rear seats folded down. It's 66 inches tall, not obnoxious but enough to give taller people a bit more headroom. And yes, I know you can just bring the seat downward on sedans and the like, but there are comfort concerns on longer drives. If my knees are ever higher than my hips while sPost too long. Gotta love crash-test regulations. They get a little more stringent every year and cars have to get fatter to keep passing them. And at the same time, fleet average MPG restrictions mean the engines in these obese cars have to be boring and uninspired, too.

why not american luxuries? A crossover is only a big hatchaback and it fits.

Plus we never asked about off-roading capabilities since that's what SUVs are for, as opposed to crossovers.

I'm an 18 y/o who has saved up some money and is soon looking for a daily car. I have no real stuff to lug around (no cargo, and at most 1 passenger), and I've a big fascination for 80's Japanese cars. Would a 1988 Toyota MR2 AW11 N/A be an unwise choice? It's well within my budget, and I'm looking to test drive one soon.

New season, new thread. First episode goes up on the 18th but what I found more interesting was that they've made a video game that will release a few days before. It sounds awful, and for $15 they don't seem to be very confident in it themselves. I'm considering buying it just out of morbid curiosity.

Well yeah, but from a casual perspective S4 is ideal, as it more or less sets the bar for every season that succeeded it. Diving headlong into S1 expecting explosions, monstrosities made from cheap cars and god-tier banter will only be met with disappointment once they realise the first 3 seasons was more to do with cheap new cars that a family man could realistically buy, flinging supercars just around the test track and not going anywhere interesting with them like the later road trips, and genuine (albeit horrifically outdated) consumer advice.

BTW, if you want a HQ 576i version of S1, have a magnet link to the original SBS copies made by Finalgear rather than the shitty compression botch-job some troglodyte did that reduced its res to 512 x 328 and raped its bitrate in the process (pic related):

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:awffscxxifuff45oyeuc2trasghfjxck&dn=Top%20Gear&xl=63414786056&fc=30

ATM it's at 90% since the leafcuck who has it at 99.9% (missing 8MB from Ep. 7, which is about 10 seconds) seeds at roughly 1kbp/s, but in around 2 - 3 weeks it should be good provided he doesn't leave again.

Also one for S14 - S18 and a bunch of specials in 1080i:

I'm currently searching for S19 - S22, and will be recording S2 - S13 via OBS once Motortrend stop lying and actually add S2 of Top Gear onwards to their library like they said they would on the 4th, and also since nobody did it for the several years they were available on NetflPost too long. I work in Detroit. I currently drive a 20 year old Buick to work. I love this car, but Detroit roads have potholes big enough to hide a body in and it's clearly taking a toll. I know that one day I'm going to hit a pothole in the middle of the night and get stranded in the ghetto.

So I'm really just looking for a vehicle that is sturdy enough to handle the post-apocalyptic roads of Detroit, while also not being nice enough to get carjacked at a red light. My budget is 10-12 grand.

Nice Buick. Stop washing your car you live in Detroit. If you look like you take care of your car your car looks more valuable.

I have supplied you with a full breakdown on everything you require. Unless you're retarded you will remain comfortably under budget, and can use the saved money to repair your vehicle as needed.

You shouldn't be focusing on a car regardless, you have more pressing issues dealing with your living situation.

One of the first things I'd check for is the color of the smoke that came out the exhaust; if it's even slightly blue/lingering, it means the engine is burning oil as well as fuel. And if that's the case, I'm walking.

Subframe, check for cracks and shitty repairs.

Underneath both rocker panels for rust, especially if you're in a cold area and/or live near the sea.

Hello /o/. I'm a 20 year old southerner boy who's looking for his first car to buy.

I had a 200k+ Taurus hand-me-down, but too much has gone wrong with it for it to be any useful to repair anymore. All of my motor supports are bad, my catalytic converter is dead, 3 tires are flat and I need to replace the battery, plus it's been hit by deer I think four times.

I recently came into a lump sum of exactly $5,000 (weird how it's exactly the amount for the guide.) I had some noob questions and I hope I won't get bullied for this, but…

I was thinking that I should buy an old 6th gen Civic because it could be neat for use with my family, it could fit all four of us, plus I could go full autist on it someday and smack some shitty turbocharger on it, and change the transmission and give myself an interesting education about how it's done in the meantime.

But then I was reminded that if times are rough for me, perhaps I should look to the future instead of the present. Sure, driving a Civic would be fun, but perhaps I need a minivan or a van. I was thinking of using a car every day for when I go to work, but I have plans to go to a school perhaps. I have a few job offers in front of me, and I could lend the car to my mother for her to use in the suburbs if I am in the city and only using my feet to get to class. And, of course, the final solution is to 14/88 and have many, many children. I was wondering if it would be financially viable to buy a van and keep fixing it until I have children and use it for transporting them.

Basically, my question is, would it be useful to buy a van first if possible, or is the price range of $5000 for most vans not useful enough for keeping it the entire time that I am raising a family of my own? Perhaps due to how vans over 100k or so have issues? (I don't know if they do or not, I am from a place of ignorance.)

And if I do buy a van, which would be the most useful for containing children or my aging family? I was really thinking that the E Series or some such would be what I would look for due to the passenger numbers and size.

tl;dr is that driving cars is seen as a male thing to do because guys drive, crash and die in cars more commonly than women.

Which makes the authors assume that cars are an extension of male ego because auto manufacturers also pander to men more than women (cause the latter always failed).

I like one sentence from the paper that reads something like "Will the male be able to perform masculinity in a car without driving it?"

Just like true feminist propaganda, it sometimes accidentally asks good questions like about perceived gender equality where in most official videos, women are seen as mere passengers and driving cars is presented as this male thing. But then it goes and points out that the couple shown in the Nissan IDS showcase video is not gay and interracial enough. It's laughable.

Then it arrives to the conclusion that no, autonomous vehicles won't empower women inside them because that's not how this shit works.

The whole paper is pointless.

It can be summed up as:

"Car manufacturers should put more women driving cars in their videos."

I guess they aren't listening to them and thought writing it concisely in a paper which appears scientific would make them listen.

Of course this paper is pointless and that's exactly the point!

Why none of us is writing this shit up?

Becasue we have better stuff to do, do we?

And someone is pumping loads of money to force women into male domains of expertise/self-actualisation. It makes both: them unhappy and the economy more messed up.

Nuclear plants and racecars are poweder by expertise and passion. Children by love and care.

Mix it up and bridges fall like in Florida, planes fall like in Boeing and companies fall like reddit.

New cars suck when you look at the traditional segments, but things like Citygo are super fun go-karts with aircon and great mileage. On the other hand modern hypercars are literally hitting the limits of what's physically possible with rubber tires.

Funny you mention that.

When Škoda released the Favorit in 1987, they did in in a hatchback, small utility truck and a wagon form, however no sedan. They could only produce 2 working prototypes cause of money issues.

Now get this, they lost one of the prototypes, I don't know how, I don't know when, but basically one of the prototypes was just flat-out gone.

Fast-forward to about 2017. They randomly found it trashed in fucking Syria out of all places. Seriously what is it with dunecoons and sedans?

Took me 2 months, but she finally is in one piece. Clutch and brakes work, now got to tweak the ignition timing and the carburetor. Will install lights from a bicycle, it's too much of a hastle to find a generator for late 60s engine.

Once she runs will take it apart again and paint it.

Quick question for the engineers here:

I'm planning on building a pipe car that uses suspension similar to a humvee, just all independent suspension. Why? Cos fuck me that's why.

So first off… I'm not American. So I can't get a humvee or H1 to look at. But my understanding is this: drive shaft feeds into a drive gear, then into a wheel gear, which feeds into the wheel where there is nothing but the wheel and steering column in it, and the suspension rod close to the wheel gear.

So my question is this: what size rim would I need to get an x factor of 16 inches to accomodate for this?

Driveshaft feeds the differential which is a combination of a locker and a gear. These connect to the axles which have CV joints to vary their angle which are supported by springs and struts.

Why are you building a car if you don't even know basic terms? Eurofag's governments banned fun a long tim ago

Bought a 2001 Subaru Forester for $500 with a blown head gasket, probably will pull the engine out before changing the headgasket and timing belt, pulleys, etc. I'll probably get the heads resurfaced just for that extra piece of mind, anything else that I need to take into consideration? This is going to be my first serious project and I want to take the time to do the proper preparation and check my p's and q's before starting.

Cheese and rice the advice head been quite pessimistic. It has low miles, so I'm guessing it's in good shape think you basically said that. The head gasket thing is a known issue. Many of the years have very solid engines despite that. So good it up and flip it. It's worth 2k at those miles with a known issue fixed (is often a selling point, that the gasket head been fixed)

I had this done for an 02 Impreza, is worth it, fun cars.

Sell it before the winter!

The boxer is fairly intuitive engine but damn that is still quite the project.

Be patient, don't have the heads redone doubt they're messed up. Prob should get new head bolts tho
