Mr. Christopher Millerwas Performing the Duties of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (ASD) for SO/LIC and is former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism (SOCT). DASD Miller is responsible for overseeing the employment of special operations forces in counterterrorism, Military Information Support Operations (MISO), Information Operations, unconventional warfare, irregular warfare, direct action, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, counter proliferation, sensitive special operations, and personnel recovery/hostage issues as specified by the Secretary of Defense. Mr. Miller was sworn in as the DASD for SOCT on 6 January 2020.

From March 2018 through December 2019, Mr. Miller served as the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism and Transnational Threats at the National Security Council (NSC). In this position, Mr. Miller was responsible for strategic level policy making and implementation, and support to senior NSC and White House leadership.

Mr. Miller was raised in Iowa City, Iowa and is a retired U.S. Army officer. He was commissioned as an Infantry officer in 1987 through R.O.T.C. with a Bachelor of Arts in History from the George Washington University. Mr. Miller began his military career as an enlisted Infantryman in the Army Reserve in 1983 and also served in the District of Columbia National Guard as a Military Policeman. In 1993, he transferred to Special Forces and served in numerous command and staff positions within the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Throughout his career, he served within other special operations organizations, culminating with command of the 2nd Battalion, 5th SFG(A). Mr. Miller participated in the initial combat operations in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, in addition to numerous follow-on deployments to both theaters, and has extensive inter-agency and joint special operations experience. Upon retirement from the Army in 2014, Mr. Miller worked for over two years as a defense contractor providing clandestine Special Operations and Intelligence expertise directly to the Under Secretaries of Defense for Intelligence and Policy.

Mr. Miller possesses a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from the Naval War College and is a graduate of the Naval College of Command and Staff and the Army War College. Mr. Miller lives in Virginia with his wife. They have two grown daughters and a son in college.

JPMorgan Relaxes Mortgage Curbs With U.S. Housing Prices on Rise

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is going on the “offensive” in mortgages as home prices rise across the country, said Marianne Lake, the bank’s chief executive officer for consumer lending. “In the case of home lending in particular, we’ve walked back some of our constraints in a reflection of the fact that we’ve seen home prices continue to improve,” Lake said at a virtual investor conference Monday. “We have loosened some of our criteria there,” she said, without elaborating.

Low interest rates and a “generally solid economy” are fueling a surge in refinancing activity and propelling the purchase market, which is estimated at about $1.3 trillion this year, Lake said, adding that homeownership rates are up about 4% from last year, and up 5% among customers between the ages of 35 and 44, many of whom may be migrating away from denser urban centers amid the coronavirus pandemic. “Just to put that in context, in terms of the purchase market, that would be similar in size to the housing boom back in 2005 and 2006,” Lake said. “There’s no question that the last decade has been a quite challenging decade for home lending for the industry, and we were not an exception. A lot of that is in the rear-view mirror. I feel like we’re more on the offensive than the defensive.”

Lake, who’s overseen all of consumer lending for about 18 months, has been imparting a simple strategy to middle managers: Cut costs and sell more mortgages to “core” customers who already have a primary banking relationship with the bank. JPMorgan has lowered headcount and sought to automate and digitize its home-loan business to appeal to more borrowers. Signs of a turnaround in home-loan originations were showing even before the pandemic hit, with the part of JPMorgan’s retail business that offers mortgages to consumers either when they walk into a branch, or when they call or apply online becoming profitable in the first month of the year for the first January in five years, Bloomberg reported in February.

JPMorgan had $1.71 billion in revenue from its home-lending business in the third quarter, up 17% from a year earlier. Firmwide, origination volume rose 23% this year through September, to $96.4 billion.

With coronavirus cases rising globally and questions about the path of the economic recovery, Lake said the bank is closely monitoring the environment. JPMorgan executives will be keeping an eye on whether the pandemic continues to compel younger customers to flee crowded urban centers for areas where homes offer more space to work from home. “We are seeing that that younger cohort of customers is possibly the customer that is looking to migrate away from the more dense urban centers to less dense centers –particularly we’re seeing that in Manhattan,” Lake said. “I suspect we will see more of that. It’s a bit of a watch item rather than a reality.”

The White House said today that President Trump intends to nominate Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combating Terrorism Christopher Miller to be director of the National Counterterrorism Center, Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

In his current role, Miller is responsible for overseeing the employment of special operations forces in counterterrorism, Military Information Support Operations (MISO), Information Operations, unconventional warfare, irregular warfare, direct action, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, counter proliferation, sensitive special operations, and personnel recovery/hostage issues as specified by the Secretary of Defense. Miller was sworn in as the DASD for SOCT on Jan. 6, 2020.

From March 2018 through December 2019, Miller served as the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism and Transnational Threats at the National Security Council (NSC). In this position, Miller was responsible for strategic level policy making and implementation, and support to senior NSC and White House leadership.

Miller was raised in Iowa City, Iowa and is a retired U.S. Army officer. He was commissioned as an Infantry officer in 1987 through R.O.T.C. with a Bachelor of Arts in History from the George Washington University. Miller began his military career as an enlisted Infantryman in the Army Reserve in 1983 and also served in the District of Columbia National Guard as a Military Policeman. In 1993, he transferred to Special Forces and served in numerous command and staff positions within the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Throughout his career, he served within other special operations organizations, culminating with command of the 2nd Battalion, 5th SFG(A). Miller participated in the initial combat operations in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, in addition to numerous follow-on deployments to both theaters, and has extensive inter-agency and joint special operations experience. Upon retirement from the Army in 2014, Miller worked for over two years as a defense contractor providing clandestine Special Operations and Intelligence expertise directly to the Under Secretaries of Defense for Intelligence and Policy.

Miller possesses a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from the Naval War College and is a graduate of the Naval College of Command and Staff and the Army War College. Miller lives in Virginia with his wife. They have two grown daughters and a son in college.

Breaking: 10 GOP State AG’s Announce Case Against Pennsylvania Mail-In Ballots

This afternoon, Missouri AG Eric Schmitt, Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron, Oklahoma AG Michael J. Hunter, and the AGs from Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and Florida announced the filing of an amicus brief to the Supreme Court. The effort is on behalf of the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) regarding the decision by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on the Pennsylvania Republican Party’s case about 2020 general election mail-in ballots.

The amicus brief refers to several sources that all express the same concerns about mail-in voting and absentee ballot voting.

The concerns about mail-in voting and voter fraud are stated as they relate to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision against the Republican Party:

“First, it created a post-election window of time during which nefarious actors could wait and see whether the Presidential election would be close and whether perpetrating fraud in Pennsylvania would be worthwhile. Second, it enhanced the opportunities for fraud by mandating, in a cursory footnote, that late ballots must be counted even when they are not postmarked or have no legible postmark, and thus there is no evidence they were mailed by Election Day. This decision created needless vulnerability to actual fraud and undermined public confidence in a Presidential election.”

The filing concludes with a request of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Free and fair elections are a cornerstone of our republic and make the United States the envy of nations across the globe.
