Koos Bekker was born in South Africa on 14 December 1952. Bekker got his early education from Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg and degrees from Stellenbosch University in Law and Literature and Wits University in Law. During his studies in Stellenbosch he stayed in Eendrag Manskoshuis.

After a few years in advertising he read an MBA degree at Columbia Business School, graduating in 1984. As a result of a project paper, he, and a few young colleagues founded one of the first two pay television services outside the US. M-Net and its sister companies like Multichoice eventually expanded to 48 countries across Africa. In the 1990s, he was a founding director of mobile communication company MTN. In 1997 Bekker became CEO of Naspers, one of the initial investors in the M-Net/Multichoice group. Naspers bought out the other shareholders. During his tenure, the market capitalization of Naspers grew from about $1,2 billion to $45 billion. His compensation package was unusual in that for fifteen years as CEO he earned no salary, bonus or perks. He was compensated solely via stock option grants that vested over time.

Koos Bekker is revered as an astute executive who transformed South African newspaper publisher Naspers into a digital media powerhouse, primarily due to his 2001 bet on Chinese Internet and media firm Tencent. In 2001 Naspers Ltd. put $32 million into the then-obscure Web company called Tencent. Its stake today is worth $66 billion — roughly equal to Naspers’ entire stock market capitalization. Bekker, who retired as the CEO of Naspers in March 2014, returned as chairman in April 2015. Over the summer of 2015 he sold more than 70% of his Naspers shares. His Babylonstoren [Babylon’s Tower] estate, which features architecture dating back to 1690, stretches across nearly 600 acres in South Africa’s Western Cape region and includes a farm, orchard, vineyard, a 14-room hotel and a restaurant.

Bekker has always played a significant role at Naspers (formerly Nasionale Pers – National Press) leading the founding team of M-Net in 1985.

By extension, under his leadership, he pioneered the development of M-Net, Supersport, MultiChoice’s satellite television as well as M-Web – and subsequently directed Naspers from a small media company, to a multinational media giant with diverse media interests in many markets.

Naspers has interests in Internet, pay-TV, magazines, newspapers, books and private education, as well as investments in China, India, Russia and other countries across the globe.

Bekker has not only been involved in the South African media landscape, but has also been a part of other growing and significant sectors of the country.

“Port cyber attack: Now Road freighters concerned about goods” – Durban Port

The Road Freight Association has raised concern about the movement of cargo through Durban Port and the country's image to the world.

The Road Freight Association (RFA) said it was “dismayed and gravely concerned” about the cyber-attack on Durban Port.

RFA CEO Gavin Kelly said in a statement on Friday that the attack had created “massive delays and unreliability of the movement of goods across all modes of transport” with road freight bearing the brunt of the impact.

Transnet advised its customers on 22 July that it was “currently experiencing a problem with some of its IT applications, and we have had to shut them down to identify the source of the problem”.

Kelly said the RFA had received confirmation from Transnet that it has “identified the source of disruption to its IT systems and that the technical teams continue to work around the clock to ensure that the impact remains minimal”.

“The gates to ports are closed which means no trucks are moving in either direction. This has immediate effect: the queues will get a lot longer, deliveries will be delayed and congestion will increase. The manual processes being used are also creating problems in terms of operations. Road freight operators already have a huge backlog resulting from last week’s civil unrest. The delays at the port will further exacerbate the problem. Deliveries will become unreliable and unpredictable – adding further inefficiencies into the supply chain,” Kelly said.

“The system needs to be adapted to ensure this sort of thing cannot happen in future. In the meantime, an alternative system, even if manual, needs to be put in place to ensure freight keeps moving into and out of the ports.”

“The implications for South Africa, both in the short- and long term, are serious. The past five years have seen our ports deteriorating further,” Kelly said.

In a World Bank report issued earlier this year, the Port of Durban was listed as one of the three worst ports in the world – out of 351 ports that were assessed.

“The effects of the cyber-attack are going to result in further reputational damage to South Africa. This further threatens our country’s status as the ‘Gateway to Africa’ for the import and export of goods. If this matter is not addressed urgently, the non-functioning of our ports will be yet another reason why international traders and shippers will choose other ports in Africa through which to move our goods,” Kelly said.

“Soldier [Captain] arrested for cash-in-transit heist”

The Hawks National Priority Violent Crimes team (NPVC), together with the Attaqua K9 Unit from Oudtshoorn, have arrested a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member following a cash-in-transit heist at a petrol station in Oudtshoorn on Monday 19 July 2021.

The 36-year-old SANDF Captain, attached to the Infantry School in Oudtshoorn, was arrested on Friday 23 July 2021 and will be the fourth suspect to be charged after three suspects were arrested shortly after the incident.

This comes after security guards from Fidelity Cash Solutions were robbed while collecting cash from a petrol station. One of the security guards was accosted by two armed suspects while on his way back to his armoured vehicle. He was disarmed of his service pistol and robbed of a bag containing cash.

Minutes after the robbery, the Hawks’ team stopped a Nissan Sentra and arrested three occupants. A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of the stolen security guard firearm and sealed money bag containing the stolen cash, along with a second firearm which had its serial number filed off.

The Hawks team also found a full set of SANDF uniform in the Nissan Sentra. None of the three occupants were soldiers. A loyal service medal was pinned to the jacket with the name and rank of the SANDF member.

Further probing found that the vehicle that was used in the robbery, a white Toyota Tazz fitted with false number plates, had been driven by the SANDF member. The white Toyota Tazz drove away from the crime scene and stopped next to a silver/blue Nissan Sentra and the stolen goods were transferred from the Toyota Tazz to the Nissan Sentra.

On Wednesday 21 July 2021, the Hawks team followed up on information received from Oudtshoorn detectives on the whereabouts of the Toyota Tazz used in the robbery. The Tazz was found parked inside a garage of a residence in Oudtshoorn, not far from the Infantry School. The set of false number plates used in the robbery was found inside the vehicle.

Consequently, the SANDF member was arrested. The suspect is due to appear tomorrow, 26 July 2021, in the Oudtshoorn Magistrates Court on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

“Phoenix violence: The real problem is not race, but the police’s incompetence”

Race is not to blame for the violence that ravaged Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal where several people were killed, but the failure of the police force and some of the country’s other security structures to do their job properly.

This can be gleaned from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s weekly newsletter in which he asks South Africans to have “honest conversations” with each other about race, while making special reference to the violence that played out in the predominantly Indian residential area of Phoenix.

The FF Plus has requested to have such an open discussion on race numerous times in the past. The party also asked that Affirmative Action (AA) and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) must come under discussion as well.

The President must not try and hold up and hide behind racism when it comes to the events that took place in Phoenix. The truth is that the Phoenix community had no other choice but to protect itself seeing as the police force was apparently unable to.

Nobody is justifying vigilantism, but the situation in Phoenix must be seen in context of the actual events that transpired there as well as the fact that a lack of police presence greatly contributed to the situation’s volatility.

If the police force had done its job, those events would never have occurred in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal. President Ramaphosa must accept full responsibility for what happened seeing as he allowed incompetence to paralyse the country’s security structures on his watch.

The President is also wrong in assuming that the events in Phoenix reflect the average South African’s racial disposition.

A good example and true reflection of racial relations was evident between the people in Pongola where the entire community – white, black, coloured and Indian – joined hands to protect their town against anarchy.

It is wrong to focus only on what went wrong in Phoenix and ignore the good racial relations elsewhere.

The FF Plus has said this before and will say it again: The party is in favour of having an honest conversation about race where everyone will have the opportunity to have their voices heard, not just the ANC government.

The Rwandan forces deployed in the Central African Republic (CAR) under a UN mandate and those under a bilateral arrangement with Bangui serve the same purpose, President Paul Kagame noted on Thursday, August 5.

President Kagame noted this in Kigali while addressing a news conference together with CAR President, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, who had just begun his four-day state visit to Rwanda.

His comments came a day after Rwanda started deploying an additional infantry battalion of 750 military personnel to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Central African Republic (MINUSCA). With the latest deployment, Rwanda now has three battalions and a Level 2 hospital deployed under MINUSCA.

Last December, Rwanda quickly deployed Special Forces under a bilateral arrangement on defence to bolster the Central African Republic’s armed forces.

“Both deployments serve the same purpose, differently,” Kagame said, explaining that the force protection troops deployed on December 20, 2020 came in as reinforcement of Rwanda’s UN deployments in the country.

Both Kagame and Touadéra agreed that given the situation in and around Bangui at the time, when the country was heading to a presidential election and a rebel coalition was advancing with speed intent on disrupting everything and causing mayhem, speed was of the essence.

The dimension of the bilateral arrangement, Kagame said, brought in more speed and action “than the other one.”

“There was a sense of urgency when we deployed under the bilateral arrangement. Everyone thought that if we had to wait for the other force (UN force), it might take longer to arrive than the actual need for action in terms of time,” Kagame said.

That’s why, he indicated, CAR which was under pressure of rebel groups operating and moving fast and trying to destabilise the country which was moving towards elections requested for, and was given quick support.

“They (rebels) were threatening the capital. MINUSCA was there. I am sure they didn’t want this to happen (and) that the rebels would overrun the city of Bangui and derail the elections but maybe they were still studying…”

“And we couldn’t give orders to our troops that were under the UN because they are under the command of the UN and have different rules of engagement. We were more comfortable having this arrangement and, by this, we were able to deploy forces faster and to serve the same purpose the UN was supposed to be serving.”

The UN mission’s rules of engagement were slow, the two leaders acknowledged, yet there was a problem on the ground that required immediate action.

Touadéra said: “In this urgency, you know, it’s true there are UN forces and these forces have their rules of engagement. It was urgent for us because the conflict there (in CAR) is not a conventional conflict.”

The rebels, he noted, are not like a regular army that is easily recognised and separated from the population.

“It was, therefore, necessary to reinforce our forces which were under reconstruction.”

This is why, Touadéra said, his government found it necessary to activate its means of bilateral cooperation and as such contacted the Rwandan government for support in quickly countering and repulsing the rebel advance.

The participation of Rwanda’s special forces, Touadéra noted, was critical in blocking the advance of the Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) rebel alliance led by former president François Bozize.

Tensions in the country rose recently after Bozizé’s candidacy for national elections was rejected last year by the country’s highest court.

Communications Unions have called for an explanation into why armed soldiers were allowed inside the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) headquarters in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

The staff has reported seeing soldiers carrying guns walking through the third floor of the TV Building where the News studios are situated.

The SABC has confirmed that soldiers were deployed to its offices in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to protect the national key points.

President of Bemawu, Hannes du Buisson has challenged the SABC to study their CCTV cameras if they want proof of the soldiers in the newsroom. He says the presence of soldiers creates an atmosphere of fear.

“That easily could create the impression that government or the SANDF are watching you, as journalists. You don’t have to say anything, your mere presence there totally out of place, totally unwarranted, unjustified, being in the public broadcaster building armed with rifles, totally out of place. All of that has certainly created the impression that we are not free, we are not independent, we are watched by Big Brother.”

The SANDF says they were deployed to National Key Points during the riots in July, and SABC premises are part of that deployment. SANDF spokesperson, Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi, says soldiers will remain stationed where they are needed until they are told to withdraw.

“Our soldiers, when the unrest started, we started deploying our soldiers to national key point areas. The SABC was one of them. And then this deployment will continue until we receive instruction from the Commander in Chief that our soldiers must start withdrawing from the areas where they are.”

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula tweeted: “We know that the rebels intended to take over the broadcaster.” Du Buisson says if this is true, the broadcaster must play open cards with the employees and the country.

“If a Minister of this country says the rebels wanted to take over the broadcaster, that is very serious. And I think the question should be asked to the board, were you aware or are you aware of any attempts that were aimed at taking over the public broadcaster, the SABC? And why has that not been communicated to the general public out there.”

The SABC says it will not be commenting further at this stage.

The FF Plus is deeply concerned about the large quantities of ammunition and firearms stolen from the police and metro police in Gauteng and the strong possibility that it may end up in the hands of criminals.

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, confirmed in response to a written question by the FF Plus that thousands of rounds of ammunition and 107 firearms belonging to the police and metro police were reported stolen or missing between July 2020 and June 2021.

At present, there are 279 cases under investigation in which police officers’ ammunition and firearms were stolen during armed robberies or have simply gone missing from safes.

In Gauteng alone, 84 police officers are under investigation. The missing firearms include one shotgun, four R5 rifles and 274 pistols.

In addition, 1 668 R5 rounds, 575 shotgun rounds and 1 644 9mm rounds have gone missing. Of the police officers, 12 have already been found guilty, one has been suspended from service and 11 have been given final warnings. The rest are still under investigation.

Ten officers of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police have reported their pistols and ammunition as stolen. These incidents are also still under investigation.

Ten officers of the Tshwane Metro Police have reported their 9mm pistols and ammunition as stolen. Eight of these cases are being investigated and the final result in the other two is pending.

Three Gauteng traffic police officers have also reported their pistols and 45 rounds of 9mm ammunition as stolen. Some of these officers’ firearms were stolen during a hijacking.

This clearly points to poor management as well as a lack of control and discipline; decisive action must be taken.

These weapons that have gone missing or have been stolen are precisely the kind of weapons used in committing transit heists and even farm attacks.

Pfizer Will Allow Generic Covid Pill To Be Made And Sold Cheaply In Poor Countries

Pfizer has signed an agreement with the United Nations-backed Medicines Patent Pool to license its new experimental Covid-19 pill to generic companies that can supply it to 95 low- and middle-income countries. The move is similar to what Merck has done previously.

According to Bloomberg, Pfizer's license will cover countries that make up about 53% of the world's population. For the length of time that Covid is declared a public health emergency, Pfizer won't get royalties from sales in middle-income countries, and for low-income countries, Pfizer won't get royalties at all. The pact also includes some upper-middle income countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the report says.

"Numerous generic countries can cheaply produce" Pfizer's pills, Bloomberg wrote, adding that Pfzier has been under "considerable pressure" to license the technology since its positive clinical-trial results earlier in November. The pill reduced hospitalizations and deaths from Covid by 89% in a study of high-risk patients.

The drug company is now seeking emergency authorization from the FDA in the U.S.

Fully Vaccinated Patients Show Mild Symptoms after Omicron Infection in Botswana — Non-Vaccinated Show No Symptoms at All

The Gateway Pundit previously reported that the South African Medical Association debunked the hysteria over the Omicron COVID variant.

According to Angelique Coetzee, the chairwoman of the South African Medical Association who first raised the alarm of the new COVID variant, says the new variant known as the ‘Omicron’ causes “unusual but mild symptoms.”

On Monday, the Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness testified during a parliament hearing that not one of the Omicron variant cases identified needs oxygen support and hospitalization.

According to Assistant Minister Sethomo Lelatisitswe, Botswana has still 15 ‘Omicron’ variant cases, 3 of the patients showed mild symptoms while the rest did not. Of those 15 cases, 11 were vaccinated, while those 4 unvaccinated did not show symptoms at all, Lelatisitswe said.

The country recorded 19 cases of ‘Omicron’ variants in total. Four of those cases were foreign nationals on a diplomatic mission and left the country after their diagnosis.

Mr Speaker, as part of their routine genomic surveillance of SARS-COV-2, our local scientists detected this variant on four foreign nationals who had visited Botswana on a diplomatic mission earlier this month. At the conclusion of their mission in Botswana, the quartet tested positive for COVID-19 after conducting their pre-travel tests. Their COVID-19 variant was confirmed as B 1. 1. 529 on 24 November 2021, and has now been renamed Omicron.

Mr Speaker, following this development, contact tracing was immediately conducted and all contacts tested negative for the COVID-19. Further assessments and analysis of other positive COVID-19 samples have up to now produced 15 more cases of the new Omicron variant. This means that to date Botswana has recorded a total of 19 cases of the new variant. We continue to expand contact tracing to ensure that we do not leave any potential case undetected.

Mr Speaker, fourteen (14) of the nineteen (19) cases were reported in the Greater Gaborone DHMT area, four (4) are from the Serowe/Palapye DHMT area, while Kgatleng DHMT reported one (1) case. All cases reported by the Serowe/Palapye DHMT are truck drivers who were detected at a point of entry (Martins Drift), as part of COVID-19 screening strategy for arrivals. The case reported by Kgatleng DHMT was of an individual who resides in South Africa and had visited his family in Botswana, and tested as pre-travel test requirement. Given this short characterization, it appears to us that most of the 19 cases so far detected in Botswana are imported cases.

According to the latest update from the local news Mmgi, “the country’s COVID-19 cases however remain low with an update from the government this evening showing 602 active cases as at November 26. The country has thus far fully vaccinated 33.3 percent of adults, with 60.2 percent having received their first dose.”

South Africans Protest Against Shell Oil Exploration In Pristine Wild Coast

PORT EDWARD, South Africa, Dec 5 (Reuters) – South Africans took to their beaches on Sunday to protest against plans by Royal Dutch Shell to do seimsic oil exploration they say will threaten marine wildlife such as whales, dolphins, seals and penguins on a pristine coastal stretch.

A South African court on Friday struck down an application brought by environmentalists to stop the oil major exploring in the eastern seaboard’s Wild Coast, rejecting as unproven their argument that it would cause “irreparable harm” to the marine environment, especially migrating hump-back whales.

The Wild Coast is home of some of the country’s most undisturbed wildlife refuges, and it’s stunning coastal wildernesses are also a major tourist draw.

At least 1,000 demonstrators gathered on a beach near Port Edward, a Reuters TV correspondent saw.

“It’s just absolutely horrendous that they are even considering this. Look around you?” said demonstrator Kas Wilson, indicating an unspoilt stretch of beach. “It’s unacceptable and … we will stop it.”

Shell officials were not immediately available for comment, but the company said on Friday that its planned exploration has regulatory approval, and it will significantly contribute to South Africa’s energy security if resources are found.

But local people fear the seismic blasting conducted over 6,000 square kilometers will kill or scare away the fish they depend on to live.

“I don’t want them to operate here because if they do we won’t be able to catch fish,” said 62-year-old free dive fisherwoman Toloza Mzobe, after pulling a wild lobster from the ground. “What are we going to eat?”

Environmentalists are urging Shell and other oil companies to stop prospecting for oil, arguing that the world has no chance of reaching net zero carbon by 2050 if existing oil deposits are burned, let alone if new ones are found.

Earlier this year, a Dutch court ordered Shell to reduce its planet warming carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2019 levels, a decision it plans to appeal.

South Africa’s environment ministry referred Reuters to a statement late last month that “the Minister responsible for environmental affairs is … not mandated to consider the application or to make a decision on the authorisation of the seismic survey.”

CAPE TOWN, Nov 30 (Reuters) – The docking of the Europa passenger liner in Cape Town on Tuesday was meant to be a ribbon-cutting celebration marking the official start of the cruise ship season in South Africa’s top tourist hub, the first since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

But international travel curbs on southern Africa, where the new Omicron coronavirus variant was first identified, have blown expectations of a bumper tourist season out of the water.

The multi-story, white luxury liner is the first to dock at Cape Town since South Africa imposed a total ban on all cruise ships entering local ports in March 2020 after the first coronavirus infection in the country.

A succession of tough lockdown curbs has hammered a local tourism sector dependent on foreign tourists as businesses closed their doors and shed thousands of hospitality jobs.

Now travel restrictions imposed by the European Union, Britain and the United States because of Omicron, designated a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation, have seen the region’s three biggest markets cut off.

Owned by German-based travel company TUI Group, the ship carrying hundreds of passengers and crew was sailing from Luderitz in Namibia to Cape Town when news of Omicron broke and raised the possibility that the ship could be re-routed.

“Some passengers (will disembark) to fly home, whilst others will stay on board for the return journey,” said Wrenelle Stander, CEO at Wesgro, the trade and investment agency for the Western Cape province.

“Passengers heading to the airport will have to do a PCR (COVID-19) test before leaving,” she told Reuters without providing details of passenger numbers or nationalities.

Approximately 157 passengers, who disembarked in small batches, will be processed by immigration services until Thursday according to their flight schedules, said another official. There will be no crew change.

Petra Ruester, who flew to Cape Town from her native Germany last week, waved on the quay side to her parents on board the Europa who will no longer be able to join her onshore to celebrate her birthday on Wednesday.

“My father is very sad… It is a little bit disappointing, but we will celebrate with friends,” Ruester said, adding she was in constant contact with her parents via WhatsApp.

Ruester said she expected to have to quarantine for 14 days upon her return to Germany on Dec. 4.

The passengers had been expected to visit attractions such as Table Mountain or apartheid-era prison Robben Island, where former president Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.

The ship was originally meant to stay in port until Dec. 2 but will now leave a day later as passengers are being tested in a state-run laboratory in the cruise terminal.

“This has been a hammer blow to our major job-creating sector in the province precisely when we needed a recovery, to claw back jobs lost over the last 19 months,” said Alan Winde, Premier of the Western Cape province.

South Africa's Eskom asks for 20.5% power tariff hike next year

JOHANNESBURG, Dec 8 (Reuters) - South Africa's struggling state-owned power utility Eskom has applied for a 20.5% electricity tariff increase for the financial year that starts on April 1 2022, it said on Wednesday.

Energy regulator Nersa rarely grants Eskom the full amount it applies for, but the size of the latest request means electricity users in Africa's most industrialised economy could face much larger power bills next year.

Eskom cited an expected rise in spending on power supplied by independent producers, a carbon tax and coal procurement costs among reasons why it should be granted the sharply higher tariff, a summary of its application showed.

Nersa has to make a decision on the application by Feb. 25, the high court ruled earlier this month, following a dispute between the two parties.

Eskom argues that Nersa has not allowed it to recoup sufficient revenue via electricity tariffs and says that is one of the reasons why it is dependent on government bailouts.

MSC in Exclusive Talks to Buy Bolloré’s African Logistics Business for $6.4 Billion

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co., the world’s second-biggest container line, offered to buy the African transport and logistics business of Bollore SA for 5.7 billion euros ($6.4 billion) including debt.

Geneva-based MSC has been granted exclusivity until March 31 to put forward a formal bid, Bollore, the Paris-based group founded by the family of French billionaire Vincent Bollore, said in a statement Monday.

Bollore shares climbed almost 12% in early trading Tuesday, their biggest jump since Feb. 15, and were priced up 10% at 4.77 euros as of 9:31 a.m. in Paris.

The French transportation and media conglomerate had appointed Morgan Stanley to seek buyers for Bollore Africa Logistics, Le Monde reported in October, when it suggested that Denmark-based A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, the world’s No. 1 container shipper, and rival CMA CGM SA of France were interested in bidding.

The unit generated 2.1 billion euros in revenue last year and would be valued at between 2 billion and 3 billion euros, the newspaper reported at the time.

Bollore said in its statement that a sale would take the form of MSC submitting a put option that Bollore could exercise after consulting with employees and completing an internal reorganization. The deal would also require the approval of regulators and counter-parties of Bollore Africa Logistics.

The logistics division is Africa’s biggest player in the sector, with almost 21,000 employees in 49 countries, according to the group’s website. The business is active in 42 ports, including 16 container terminals, seven roll-on, roll-off ferry ports and two wood terminals. It also has a network of 85 maritime shipping agencies and operates three rail concessions.

Closely held MSC has a fleet of 600 vessels, more than 100,000 staff and serves 500 ports.

South Africa: Only 1.7% Hospitalised From Omicron

South African Health Minister Joe Phaahla said today that only 1.7% of COVID cases in the current Omicron wave are being hospitalised compared to 19% in the previous wave and that the vast majority of cases are “fairly mild.”

“In the current wave, only 1.7% of Covid cases are being hospitalized, an average of fewer than 350 cases daily over the past two weeks, versus an average of more than 800 in the previous wave, at an average of 19%,” reports Business Tech based on Phaahla’s statement.

Gauteng, the province that includes Johannesburg, has also seen a decline in positivity rate to 25%, meaning the Omicron wave could be past its peak in that region.

According to the data, hospitalisations are also lower across all age ranges, contradicting claims in the UK that it would be hit harder due to its older population.

As we highlighted yesterday, Phaahla said rates of hospitalisations and deaths remain “relatively low,” adding that there was no need to raise the restriction level and telling South Africans to enjoy their Christmas.

Such good news isn’t apparently welcome to governments in the UK, which continue to impose more draconian measures which have served to all but cancel Christmas, despite the fact that just 15 people have been hospitalised with Omicron and just one person has died.

In England, Professor Chris Whitty appears to be ignoring data out of South Africa to make doomsday predictions about there being over 4,000 hospitalisations a day from Omicron.

There is also a continuing obsession with insisting it is “too early” to make judgments on data coming out of South Africa despite such data for weeks confirming that Omicron is mild and isn’t causing hospitals to be overwhelmed.

In South Africa, The End Of The Covid Pandemic Is In Sight

The pandemic has all but ended in South Africa. Sure, there are still signs warning everyone to maintain a social distancing. And people continue to wear masks in public. But talk to South Africans, and you get the sense that it is, as they say in the American South, all over but the shoutin'.

The way South Africa successfully handled the latest wave of the pandemic offers a preview of what could happen elsewhere. That's because it's a few weeks ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to the highly infectious omicron variant. A massive wave of infections hit South Africa in mid-December but crested by early January. The daily new-infection rate is now around 3,000, roughly the same as in mid-September.

The end of the pandemic is fascinating to watch up close here in South Africa. South Africans seem to be a few steps ahead of the government, slowly removing their masks and resuming normal social activity days or weeks before it's officially allowed. It's not happening a moment too soon for South Africa's beleaguered tourism industry, which took an omicron-size hit in December when many countries banned travel to and from South Africa. But there is finally a sense that this pandemic is in its final stages.

No country needs that more than South Africa.

How did Covid-19 affect South Africa?

Covid-19 has hit the South African economy hard. A recent report by the World Bank predicted a modest bounce-back for 2021, with a 4% growth rate. But that was before omicron slammed the brakes on the country's recovery. Even if that hadn't happened, growth was expected to slow to 2.1% this year and to just 1.5% in 2023.

But omicron hit the tourism sector the hardest. The surge coincided with high season, during the summer months of December and January. Visitors usually come to Cape Town to enjoy the balmy weather or go on safari. Travelers couldn't or wouldn't come here to South Africa because of the travel warnings and fear of catching Covid-19. And, for the most part, they haven't returned yet, further depressing South Africa's hotel and tour businesses.

In its latest annual report, South African Tourism reported that it welcomed just under 3 million tourists last year, compared to slightly more than 10 million visitors in 2019. Even domestic trips dropped 40% as residents stayed home to avoid infection. Making matters worse was omicron, which hit South Africa the hardest.

"South Africa was under attack with the association of the new variant originating in South Africa as was thus dubbed the South African variant," the report noted. "This was repeatedly reported on global platforms and as a result, some countries issued travel advisories and travel bans to and from South Africa."

Put differently, there may be no country on earth that got hit harder than South Africa during the pandemic.

When will Covid-19 end in South Africa?

It's a question of when — not if — Covid will end in South Africa. In Cape Town, Covid looks like it's almost over.

If you're arriving on an international flight, a customs official will ask you for a printout of your PCR test, but they''ll just give it a cursory glance before welcoming you to South Africa. South African producers will not be able to make up for a possible reduction in the supply of key commodities from Russia, primarily palladium and other platinum group metals. This was announced on Thursday by South African media firm SABC, citing the director of the largest mining company, Sibanye-Stillwater, Neil Froneman.

“Acceleration of projects to expand production is possible, but a significant increase in production will take months and even years,” Froneman said.

He noted that car manufacturers are now trying to replace palladium, which is used in catalytic converters, which convert as much as 90% of the harmful gases in automobile exhaust, with platinum.

Palladium prices have skyrocketed 80% this year to all-time highs, as financial sanctions on Russia, which produces 25-30% of global supply, disrupted shipments and worsened a supply shortage.

The Russian government announced on Wednesday it was banning the export of certain commodities and raw materials. The measure was aimed at ensuring Russia's security amid Ukraine-related sanctions, Moscow explained.

By Paul Burkhardt (Bloomberg) Europe’s surging demand for coal is reviving an infrequent trade lane for shipments from South African mines.

The fossil fuel typically heads east from Richards Bay Coal Terminal, the continent’s biggest export hub. Of the 59 million tons of coal shipped from the South African port last year, only 4% went to Europe and more than 86% was delivered to Asia.

There may have been a shift in that balance since Feb. 20 as a handful of bulk carriers have headed west round the Cape of Good Hope after calling at Richards Bay, according to ship tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. At least two stopped directly at RBCT.

Europe’s key coal price climbed to a record on Wednesday as sanctions and companies’ own decisions to stop trading with Russian counterparties mean traders are trying to buy elsewhere. There are also concerns further sanctions and war could tighten the ability of utilities to source coal from Russia if they need to.

European utilities have “ramped up volumes in the last few weeks” of South African coal, said Bevan Jones, chief executive officer of consultants African Source Markets. There are also notable flows of coal from the U.S. and Colombia to Europe, he said.

Stockpiles at Richards Bay are dropping and coal miners have experienced rail logistics issues on the main line to the port, but it “seems to be coping for now,” Jones said.

Between 2013 and 2016 mining giant Glencore paid over $75m to Dan Gertler, a controversial businessman accused of bribing senior officials in Democratic Republic of Congo to advance his mining interests, Global Witness revealed today. These payments were due to be paid to Congo’s state mining company Gécamines under the terms of the original contract it had with Glencore.

Glencore did not disclose in company filings that it was instead making these payments to Gertler, a known corruption risk. That he was the recipient of the payments comes to light only weeks after Glencore bought Gertler out of mining assets it held jointly with him in Congo in a billion dollar deal.

A Global Witness investigation found that from 2013 to 2016 Toronto-listed Katanga Mining, majority-owned by Glencore, made “signature bonus” and other payments totalling over $75 million to Dan Gertler’s Africa Horizons company, registered in the Cayman Islands. Under the original contract these payments would have gone to Gécamines, but Global Witness wrote to Glencore after reviewing company documents and filings that raised questions over the true recipient of the payments. Glencore admitted that they were made to Gertler’s company.

“It’s outrageous that Glencore has been making payments to a friend of the Congolese President who has been accused of bribery and corruption, and then not telling its shareholders or the public that it’s done so,” said Pete Jones from the Congo team at Global Witness. “Glencore has been in business in Congo with Gertler for a decade and has known about the allegations that have been made against him for years.”

Gertler is a close friend of Congo’s President Joseph Kabila and has been a focus of major foreign bribery investigations in the US and UK. In a finding by US authorities in September against the hedge fund Och-Ziff, an “infamous Israeli businessman” was identified as having paid bribes to Congolese officials to win mining licences for Och-Ziff. The businessman is widely understood to be Gertler. He is reported to be a central focus of a corruption investigation by the UK’s Serious Fraud Office into Kazakh mining company ENRC, based in part on ENRC’s deals with Gertler in Congo. Gertler’s spokesman told Bloomberg that his company “vigorously contests any and all accusations of wrongdoing in any of its dealings in [Congo]”.

Congo has vast natural resource wealth, but corruption, mismanagement and the sale of mines below market value have helped keep it one of the world’s poorest countries, consistently languishing near the bottom of the UN Human Development Index.

Glencore has now admitted, in a letter to Global Witness, that these payments actually went to Gertler from 2013 to 2016.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wasn’t bluffing when he said he would bus illegal aliens dropped off by the federal government in small Texas communities to Washington, D.C. Apparently, DHS simply dropped the illegals off without warning and without asking permission. Many Texas towns were blindsided by Joe Biden’s “catch and release” policy and were begging Abbott for help.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki whined that Abbott’s voluntary bus rides were a “publicity stunt.” Well, duh. But immediately after Abbott’s announcement, the federal government stopped dropping illegal aliens in the towns that had been pleading for help.

Fox News:

“From the [Rio Grande Valley] to Terrell County, a large majority of the communities that originally reached out for support through this operation have now said that the federal government has stopped dropping migrants in their towns since the governor’s announcement on Wednesday,” he said.

Christensen said each bus “has the capacity and supplies necessary to carry up to 40 migrants.”

On Wednesday, Abbott said at a news conference that the state would be sending the migrants “to the United States Capitol, where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.”

Senator Ted Cruz thought Abbott’s idea was so good he introduced legislation to expand the illegal alien transport program to what he considered to be other rich, Democratic enclaves.

Abbott also promised more vehicle inspections, knowing full well that would lead to much longer delays at the border and add to supply chain woes.

But Abbott is fighting the Biden plan to lift Title 42 restrictions and open the floodgates to an estimated 800,000 new arrivals in the next year. The burden that would fall on Texas and other border states would be intolerable.

Queensland has recorded 25 flu-related deaths so far this year and Chief Health Officer John Gerrard is warning a third COVID-19 wave is also now hitting the state.

Hospital admissions because of COVID-19 have been on the rise throughout June, with Dr Gerrard saying 38 per cent of genomically sequenced cases in Queensland were the newer BA-4 and BA-5 Omicron sub-variants.

"Just three or four weeks ago, it was under 2 per cent," he said.

"We are now in another established wave of COVID-19 due to the BA-4 and BA-5 sub-variants.

"There'll be a stress on the hospitals in the next few weeks as more and more people get admitted."

The logic of the radical left is an introduction of their own projected dialectically inverted two sided inconsistency sets as UNQUESTIONED descriptions of reality, their solutions are demanded and required, and any dissent must in the last resort be depopulated/extinguished/exterminated.

This logic can ONLY have a long term outcome of destruction of free societies and free enterprise economic competition, and implementation of 'old guard' master/slave concentration camps.
