Deadly Russian nuclear submarines with advanced stealth capabilities are slipping undetected into UK waters, defence sources have conceded for the first time.
President Putin’s latest high-tech submarines can sail so quietly, they cannot be picked up by our underwater defence systems, including sonar.
In a chilling echo of the film The Hunt For Red October, according to military sources the new submarines have carried out missions to track Britain’s submarines as they leave the top-secret Faslane base in Scotland.
The Russians have also been mapping a network of vital energy and telecommunications and internet cables beneath the English Channel. If these were destroyed, the UK could be plunged into chaos and darkness.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that there has been a tenfold increase in Russian submarine activity in UK waters since 2015. But the actual numbers and the locations visited by Russian submarines remain classified for security reasons.
The revelations come as Russia is increasing its military activities around the world, including 25 surface vessels sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean in support of operations in Syria.

‘The propulsion systems of this new submarine are a lot more sophisticated. As a result, the submarine is a lot quieter than its predecessors. Until recently, Russian submarines tended to be horrendously noisy.’Russian subs seeking to approach Faslane have usually been identified as they pass through a stretch of water known as the Iceland Gap. Their progress was monitored by hydrophone listening devices which could pinpoint the whereabouts of a submarine based on the noise from its propeller. So why are they impossible to track? He said: ‘The Russians were a long way behind in submarine warfare, particularly stealth technology, but much may have changed. FBI raid(?) at the Sunspot Observatory near Cloudcroft, New Mexico
The Sunspot Observatory is temporarily closed due to a security issue at the facility that’s located 17 miles south of Cloudcroft in the Sacramento Mountains Friday, an Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) spokeswoman Shari Lifson said.
“We have decided to vacate the facility at this time as precautionary measure. It was our decision to evacuate the facility.”
The facility is the National Solar Observatory facility at Sacramento Peak that’s managed by AURA.
Apache Point Observatory (APO) is currently in operation. APO was not evacuated. APO is about a mile away from Sunspot observatory.
She said AURA does not have a comment about the type of security issue at this time.
“I am actually not sure (when the facility was vacated) but it will stay vacated until further notice,” Lifson said. “It’s the people that vacated. At this time, it’s the facility that’s closed.”
She said she cannot comment on whether the FBI was involved in the situation.
Otero County Sheriff Benny House said the Otero County Sheriff’s Office was asked to standby.
“The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,” House said. “We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say.”
“But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there,” House said. “There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”
“They wanted us up there to help evacuate but nobody would tell us anything,” he said. “We went up there and everything was good. There was no threat. Nobody would identify any specific threat. We hung out for a little while then we left. No reason for us to be there. Nobody would tell us what we’re supposed to be watching out for.”
House said he doesn’t understand why Sunspot didn’t call or notify them of the situation.
“They’re not federal employees,” he said. “It maybe somebody who threatened one of their workers. If that’s the case, why didn’t call us and let us deal with it. These guys are regular workers that work for this company. I don’t know why the FBI would get involved so quick and not tell us anything.”

A Connecticut woman suffered serious injuries Thursday night after she mistakenly lit a stick of dynamite thinking it was a candle during a power outage.
Authorities said the 30-year-old mother of two got involved in the “tragic accident” when her family’s Bridgeport home lost power during a thunderstorm Thursday night and she “attempted to light” what she believed were candles in the basement left behind by the previous residents, CBS Boston reported.
The family attempted to purchase emergency lighting at a Home Depot store, but discovered the store had closed. Out of desperation, they decided to rummage through their basement to find candles that would provide light.
But when the woman lit one of the “candles,” she accidentally ignited a quarter stick of dynamite and caused it to explode in her hand.
“She attempted to light one of what she thought was the candle and turned out to be a quarter stick of dynamite,” police said.
Authorities say the woman suffered severe injuries to her hand and face and could lose several fingers as a result of her injuries.
All family members were home at the time of the incident, but no other injuries had been reported. WABC reported that the force of the explosion was strong enough to blow out one of the windows inside the home.
Bridgeport Fire Department officials and Connecticut State Police searched the home for other explosives and removed another dynamite device. State police officers later disposed of the device.
Connecticut law prohibits the possession of fireworks or dynamite, but authorities say they are not filing charges against the family.

A man was killed and four others were wounded early Sunday during a shooting at a McDonald’s near Auburn University that doesn't appear to be random, police said.
Officers responded to the shooting on West Magnolia Ave. just before 2:30 a.m. and found a 20-year-old man dead from gunshot wounds, Auburn Police wrote in a news release.
Four other people, including a 21-year-old Auburn University student, were also injured from the gunfire. A 16-year-old was transported with serious injuries. The student, a 17-and 19-year-old were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
Authorities said they believe the incident was not a random shooting.
"Preliminarily, information has been obtained that an altercation occurred just prior to an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the injuries," police said.
Just before the shooting, students were celebrating the Auburn Tigers' football game win over the Alabama State Hornets.
Auburn University's emergency notification system wrote on its Twitter page that there's no indication of an active threat to the campus community. Officials urged to report suspicious activity.
