Baynes-Dunning, who first joined the board in October 2017, has played a crucial role in the organization’s reimagining as a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond.
The Board of Directors also elected Emery Wright as vice chair. Wright, executive director of Project South, an Atlanta-based movement-building organization, has served on the SPLC’s Board of Directors since October 2020.

Death Investigation
On April 22, 2026, at approximately 2:00 a.m., officers with the Lake Havasu City Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of Chandler Drive in reference to a reported deceased individual. Upon arrival, officers located a male subject who suffered from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The male was pronounced deceased on scene, and the Lake Havasu City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit was notified and responded to the scene to assume the investigation.
The body was ultimately turned over to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s office for further investigation. The male subject has been identified as Darrell Sheets, a 67-year-old resident of Lake Havasu City, and Darrell’s family has been notified.
This incident remains under active investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lake Havasu City Police Department at 928-855-1171.

What is "Chevron deference" …???

Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 (1984), was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court that set forth the legal test for when U.S. federal courts must defer to a government agency's interpretation of a law or statute.[1] The decision articulated a doctrine now known as "Chevron deference".[2] Chevron deference consists of a two-part test that is deferential to government agencies: first, whether Congress has spoken directly to the precise issue at Question, and second, "whether the agency's answer is based on a permissible construction of the statute."
The decision involved a legal challenge to a change in the U.S. government's interpretation of the word "source" in the Clean Air Act of 1963. The Act did not precisely define what constituted a "source" of air pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initially defined "source" to cover essentially any significant change or addition to a plant or factory. In 1981, the EPA changed its definition to be mean only an entire plant or factory. This allowed companies to build new projects without going through the EPA's lengthy new review process if they simultaneously modified other parts of their plant to reduce emissions so that the overall change in the plant's emissions was zero. Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmentalist advocacy group, successfully challenged the legality of the EPA's new definition.[3]
Chevron is one of the most important decisions in U.S. administrative law. It has been cited in thousands of cases since its issuance in 1984.[4]
Thirty-nine years later, in May 2023, the Supreme Court granted certiorari to reevaluate Chevron. Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, No. 22-451. A decision is expected in the first half of 2024.[5]

Sean Plankey, the pick to lead the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, is withdrawing from consideration after his nomination to be CISA director languished in the Senate for 13 months.
In a letter to the White House Presidential Personnel Office today, Plankey asked to have his nomination withdrawn.
“After thirteen months since my initial nomination, it has become clear the Senate will not confirm me,” Plankey wrote. “My wife and young family are owed greater certainty and work life balance from their husband and father.”
President Donald Trump first nominated Plankey last March. The pick had broad support within the cybersecurity community. Following his confirmation hearing, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted to advance Plankey’s nomination last July.

In a major court victory for Virginia Republicans and fair-maps advocates, the Tazewell Circuit Court has ruled the Democrats’ redistricting referendum unconstitutional.
The judge has entered an injunction blocking certification of the narrow “Yes” victory and denied Democrats’ request for a stay pending appeal.
The development was announced on Wednesday afternoon by former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II, who is leading the Election Transparency Initiative.
“UPDATE on referendum lawsuits: The Tazewell Circuit Court just ruled the referendum unconstitutional. The Judge entered an injunction blocking certification of the election & denied a motion to stay pending appeal. A final order will be entered once drafted, & it will be immediately appealed,” Cuccinelli wrote in a post on X.
This ruling means the ridiculous constitutional amendment, which would have allowed the Democrat-controlled General Assembly to immediately toss Virginia’s current balanced six-five congressional map and replace it with a heavily gerrymandered 10 Democrat to one Republican map, cannot be certified or take effect unless the Virginia Supreme Court overturns the decision on appeal.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is putting public health at risk by continuing to let farmers spray glyphosate, a weed killer linked to cancer, directly on top of oats before harvest, a practice that commonly results in residues of the pesticide remaining on popular foods made with oats, according to a new lawsuit.
The lawsuit, filed April 20 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), asks the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to require the EPA to respond to a 2018 petition that calls on the EPA to ban the use of glyphosate for drying out crops before harvest and to lower the level of glyphosate residue allowed to linger on oats from 30 parts per million (ppm) to just 0.1 ppm. The EPA has never responded to the petition, which was filed by EWG and a group of food companies and grocers.
The lawsuit focuses on the EPA’s current “maximum residue limit” (MRL) for glyphosate in oats, which are widely eaten by children in cereals, cookies and other products, and alleges the limits do not adequately protect children’s health.
Tests conducted by EWG and others have found glyphosate residues in a range of popular foods, including oat-based cereals and snacks, concluding that oats are a major source of glyphosate exposure for babies and young children.
“The EPA has a clear legal duty to act on this petition, and it has simply refused to do so,” Caroline Leary, EWG’s general counsel, said in a statement.
“This kind of delay has real consequences for families who rely on the agency to ensure children are not exposed to toxic farm chemical residues like glyphosate,” said Leary.

The agency’s MRLs, also known as tolerance levels, for glyphosate in food crops have long courted controversy. While the MRL for oats was 0.1 ppm in 1993, it was bumped to 20 ppm in 1997 and raised again to 30 ppm in 2008. The EPA’s MRLs often allow for more glyphosate residue to remain on foods in the US than in many other countries, including those in the European Union.
In 2013, the EPA issued a new regulation that raised glyphosate levels in oilseed crops, including flax, sesame, and soybean, from 20 ppm to 40 ppm, as well as dramatically increasing the levels allowed in sweet potatoes and carrots. The EPA increased the tolerance levels in response to requests from Monsanto.
The EPA is in the process of re-evaluating glyphosate’s registration under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), after withdrawing an interim registration decision in September 2022. The agency is expected to issue a final registration review decision this year.
On the agency’s glyphosate web page, the EPA says that detectable pesticide residue on food does not mean that the residue is present at an unsafe level.
“Due to its widespread use, trace amounts of glyphosate residues may be found in various fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals, and other food and beverage commodities. However, these trace amounts are not of concern for the consumer,” says the EPA on its website.
In its 2019 petition, EWG wrote that the EPA “incorrectly dismissed” many scientific studies that have linked glyphosate to cancer, a move that has “enabled the continued approval of increasingly high tolerance levels of glyphosate as a residue on common foods.”
EWG’s lawsuit comes as Monsanto, the maker of Roundup, a popular weed killer product with glyphosate as its active ingredient, gears up for an April 27 Supreme Court battle in which the court is tasked with determining if federal law preempts state labeling requirements for products that could harm consumers.
Legal briefs supporting Monsanto, which is owned by the German conglomerate Bayer, suggest the US could face agricultural “devastation” and other hardships if the court rules against the company, while opposing briefs warn that siding with Monsanto could let companies off the hook, stripping consumers of their rights to sue when they become seriously ill after exposure to dangerous chemicals.
Glyphosate has been used in the US since the 1970s and is currently the most widely used weed killer in the world. In a Seattle “glyphosate symposium” last month, scientists from around the world gathered to urge US and European regulators to strengthen glyphosate regulations. The researchers examined studies conducted over the last decade, concluding that evidence showing glyphosate herbicides can harm human health “is now so strong that no additional delays in regulation of glyphosate can be justified.”

A senior Defense Department official shared the estimate, which has not been previously reported, during a classified briefing Tuesday for members of the House Armed Services Committee, said three officials familiar with the discussion. The timeline — met with frustration byDemocrats and Republicans alike, two of these people said — is perhaps the clearest sign that gasoline and oil prices could remain elevated long after any peace deal is reached.
Beyond any economic ramifications, such an outcome also could have significant implications politically in the United States — particularly for Republicans — as November’s midterm elections draw near.
President Donald Trump’s decision to start the war has proven unpopular with most Americans, recent polls have shown, and it has fractured his political base, which voted him into office based in part on his repeated promises to avoid foreign military entanglements and focus more on domestic issues.
Three officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the discussion’s sensitivity, said lawmakers were told that Iran may have emplaced 20 or more mines in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for the movement of Middle Eastern oil through the Persian Gulf. Some were floated remotely using GPS technology, which has made it difficult for U.S. forces to detect the mines as they are deployed, the senior defense official told lawmakers. Others are believed to have been laid by Iranian forces using small boats.
The Pentagon did not respond Wednesday to questions about the military’s assessment for how long it could take to clear the mines. U.S. Central Command, which oversees operations in the region, declined to comment. The White House referred questions to the Pentagon.
The stifling of shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has emerged as an enduring flash point in the war, with Iran declaring it closed and even attacking some ships as a way of inflicting pain on the global economyand the Trump administration as Washington and Tehran each press their demands to end the war. Before the war, about 20 percent of the world’s oil moved through the strait, with Japan, South Korea, China and other Asian nations among those heavily reliant on Middle Eastern energy.

The Pentagon’s latest assessment was shared with lawmakers afterTrump said on social media that “Iran, with the help of the U.S.A., has removed, or is removing, all sea mines” from the Strait of Hormuz. That assertion, made Friday amid a flurry of messages posted by the president on his Truth Social platform, coincided with his apparent efforts to calm markets and project confidence that a deal to the end the war was near.
Trump on Tuesday said that he was extending a two-week ceasefire indefinitely. Iran’s leadership, he said, is “seriously fractured” and needs to “come up with a unified proposal.” His comments came amid indications that Iranian officials were reluctant to meet for another round of negotiations.
It is unclear what plan the U.S. military would implement to go about a mine-clearing operation. Officials have raised the possibility of using helicopters, drones and explosive ordnance disposal divers.
Some commercial vessels moved through the Strait of Hormuz this month during the ceasefire, but shipping traffic again stalled thispast weekend after Iranian forces opened fire on tanker ships and declared the waterway closed again.
Richard Nephew, an expert on Iranian diplomacy and senior researcher at Columbia University,said the six-month time frame to clear the strait of mines is likely to jolt oil and gas markets given the concern insurers, shipowners and captains will have about moving through a mined sea lane.
You’re not going to have many people wanting to run that risk,” he said. The presence of mines might not cause a “total interruption,” Nephew said, but the consequences of a two-track strait being partially unusable could be significant.

1. State troopers took over interstate patrol, freeing up local officers.
2. Police launched focused initiatives targeting fugitives, violent repeat offenders, and gang members.
3.National Guard, federal agents, and US Marshals came in and made 9,000+ arrests, including 400+ gang members. Plus 629 illegal firearms seized, 150 missing children located.
4.Technology filled the gaps. Police deployed license plate readers citywide, expanded drone use, and opened a downtown command center. A cancer center went from a crime attempt every other week to none.
Overall crime is now down more than 43% compared to the same period last year
Memphis has a long way to go and remains a dangerous city. Its DA is still dismissing 3 out of every 4 felony cases. In fact, the state legislature just passed a bill to audit and potentially remove him.
But the city is showing that a rogue DA doesn't have to be a death sentence for public safety.Flood the streets with law enforcement, target repeat offenders, and make arrests faster than he can dismiss them.

Bluetooth tracker hidden in a postcard and mailed to a warship exposed its location — $5 gadget put a $585 million Dutch ship at risk for 24 hours
HNLMS Evertsen, a Dutch air-defense frigate part of the NATO carrier strike group centered on the French carrier Charles de Gaulle, has inadvertently revealed its position after receiving a postcard containing a hidden Bluetooth tracker. According to The Register, the Dutch Ministry of Defense posted instructions online to make it easier for family and friends to communicate with personnel aboard a navy ship, but didn’t fully consider the ramifications for operational security (op-sec).
Bluetooth trackers like the Apple AirTag cost $29 a piece, but there are cheaper, generic versions available on Amazon that cost $10 for two trackers. By allowing a potential adversary to track the ship in real-time, it could put the vessel and the entire strike group at risk, as that information can be used for other operations against the fleet. The fact that it was mailed in meant that spies do not even need to go near the ship to place a tracker on the $585 million Navy ship.
Dutch journalist Just Vervaart, working for regional media network Omroep Gelderland, followed the directions posted on the Dutch government website and mailed a postcard with a hidden tracker inside. Because of this, they were able to track the ship for about a day, watching it sail from Heraklion, Crete, before it turned towards Cyprus. While it only showed the location of that one vessel, knowing that it was part of a carrier strike group sailing in the Mediterranean could potentially put the entire fleet at risk.
