Defining a Hate Crime

A hate crime is a traditional offense like murder, arson, or vandalism with an added element of bias. For the purposes of collecting statistics, the FBI has defined a hate crime as a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.” Hate itself is not a crime—and the FBI is mindful of protecting freedom of speech and other civil liberties.

These efforts serve as a backstop for investigations by state and local authorities, which handle the vast majority of hate crime cases throughout the country.

The FBI’s Role

As part of its responsibility to uphold the civil rights of the American people, the FBI takes a number of steps to combat the problem of hate crimes. The following efforts serve as a backstop to investigations conducted by state and local law enforcement agencies, which handle the vast majority of bias crime investigations throughout the country.

Investigative Activities: The FBI is the lead investigative agency for criminal violations of federal civil rights statutes. The Bureau works closely with its local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement partners around the country in many of these cases.

Law Enforcement Support: The FBI works closely with state/local/tribal authorities on investigations, even when federal charges are not brought. FBI resources, forensic expertise, and experience in identification and proof of hate-based motivations often provide an invaluable complement to local law enforcement. Many cases are also prosecuted under state statutes such as murder, arson, or more recent local ethnic intimidation laws. Once the state prosecution begins, the Department of Justice monitors the proceedings in order to ensure that the federal interest is vindicated and the law is applied equally among the 95 U.S. Judicial Districts.

Prosecutive Decision: The FBI forwards results of completed investigations to local U.S. Attorneys Offices and the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, which decide whether a federal prosecution is warranted. Prosecution of these crimes may move forward, for example, if local authorities are unwilling or unable to prosecute a crime of bias.

Hate Crimes Working Groups (HCWGs): The majority of the FBI’s field offices participate in local Hate Crime Working Groups. These Working Groups combine community and law enforcement resources to develop strategies to address local hate crime problems.

Public Outreach: The FBI has forged partnerships nationally and locally with many civil rights organizations to establish rapport, share information, address concerns, and cooperate in solving problems. With the launch of Space Warps, a new citizen science project on the Zooniverse platform, you can now join in the search to find rare and elusive strong gravitational lenses in never-before-seen images captured by the European Space Agency’s Euclid space telescope.

The project aims at shining a light on dark matter in galaxies and providing clues about mysterious dark energy.

Warps in spacetime do not only show up in science fiction movies like Interstellar. In real life, we can see the warping effect that gravity has on spacetime in the form of gravitational lensing.

The enormous gravity of a massive object – such as a galaxy or cluster of galaxies – distorts the shape of spacetime and can bend the light rays coming from a distant galaxy behind. By warping spacetime, the foreground galaxy acts like a magnifying glass.

Light from the background object that would be obscured doesn’t travel in a straight line anymore. Instead, it curves around the intervening mass, often producing multiple images, stretched arcs, or even a complete ring known as ‘Einstein ring’, like the one recently discovered by Euclid.

Strong gravitational lenses offer a striking demonstration of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, showing that matter in the Universe can act as a natural telescope, bringing distant objects into sight.

ESA’s Euclid telescope is revolutionising the studies of strong gravitational lensing by providing very sensitive imaging over large swaths of the sky in unprecedented detail. This is exactly what is needed to identify rare gravitational lenses.

In March 2025, 500 galaxy-galaxy strong lenses were found nestled in just the first 0.04% of Euclid data, most of them previously unknown. This pioneering catalogue was created thanks to the combined effort from citizen scientists, artificial intelligence (AI) and researchers.

Early glimpse of new Euclid images

As Euclid continues its survey, sending around 100 GB of data back to Earth every day, ESA and the Euclid Consortium once again need help from citizen scientists to identify strong gravitational lenses in a large data set.

For this, the Space Warps team has launched a citizen science project based on new Euclid images, which will be part of the future Euclid Data Release 1. While this data is not public yet, by participating in this new citizen science project you can get an early glimpse of these new images of galaxies captured by the telescope.

Partisan prosecutors at the Biden administration’s Department of Justice charged forward with an investigation into Republican members of Congress after privately saying the primary evidence lacked credibility, new records show.

The documents, released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, on Tuesday, show the beginnings of “Operation Rampart 12.” The operation, which the FBI launched to investigate multiple Republican members of Congress based on claims that they assisted Jan. 6 Capitol rioters, is believed to be a predecessor case to the get-Trump lawfare operation Arctic Frost.

Biden’s FBI opened Rampart Twelve on Jan. 22, 2021. Then-Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s accusations against congressional colleagues formed the primary basis of the investigation, which was carried forward by several DOJ and FBI officials whose private communications reveal there was no legitimate basis for it. Sherrill is now the Democrat governor of New Jersey.

“The Democrats have supported these fired former Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI officials. But, as the records show, these fired officials weren’t protecting our country,” Grassley wrote in an opening statement for a Senate hearing on Arctic Frost on Tuesday. “They were literally trying to destroy it.”

J.P. Cooney and Molly Gaston — both of whom later worked with Jack Smith on his anti-Trump legal campaign — were the “two partisan prosecutors” who decided to move forward with the investigations into Reps. Lauren Boebert, Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, and Mo Brooks. The move came after Sherrill alleged on a Jan. 12, 2021, Facebook Live stream that some Republican members had led “reconnaissance” tours of the U.S. Capitol prior to Jan. 6 in order to allow them to map out the forthcoming riot.

The corporate media trumpeted Sherrill’s allegations at the time, and she led a group of more than 30 House Democrats in sending a letter to the House and Senate sergeants-at-arms demanding information about Jan. 5 visitors. The FBI obtained phone toll records for Boebert and Gosar, according to the documents, much in the same way that Arctic Frost fraudulently obtained phone records of other Republicans on Capitol Hill.

“What you’ll find in the available records is that the evidence to support the investigation didn’t exist,” Grassley wrote.

In a Jan. 13, 2021, text to Cooney, Gaston stated, “so mickie [sic] sherrill has such important groundbreaking information that she has agreed to talk to amanda … friday.”

Cooney said of Sherrill, “that is embarrassing … appalling,” to which Gaston replied, “i hate politicians.”

Cooney then said, “me too … makes her allegations completely incredible.”

On Jan. 16, Cooney texted Gaston regarding video footage of Boebert in the Capitol, noting that Boebert was “near Sherrill.” But she was “not with others,” Cooney confirmed to Gaston.

“There is a maga hat group about a minute behind her … but it’s a family — with kids,” Cooney said.

There was another person in the tourist group taking pictures, whom Cooney described as “weird” but “not … suspicious.”

Gaston wanted to focus on “figur[ing] out what time the goasar [sic] thing happened … and get that video.”

Once top-secret CIA files have detailed America’s plans to control the world by manipulating the weather.

The documents, declassified in 2003, discussed the controversial topic of weather modification, the tactic of launching rockets or using planes to dump chemicals into the atmosphere that alter the climate and local storm systems.

Although the resurfaced documents from 1965 did not mention the specific chemicals used in the experiments, they did discuss the need for more funding of the weather modification projects that would soon be used as a weapon of war. In fact, the memos noted that federal funding for the secret program was set to be four times higher in 1967 – the same year the US began spraying toxins over Vietnam to cause floods and landslides.

One post on X claimed: ‘The CIA has been poisoning the sky and controlling the weather since 1965!’

The 18-page report was recently shared by conspiracy theorists, years after it was quietly placed into the CIA’s public archives, including a letter praising the classified operation from US President Lyndon B Johnson.

Johnson’s endorsement of the CIA’s weather modification project came just three years after he gave an ominous speech on the future of America and the work to create ‘weather satellites’ with the power to strengthen storms.

While giving the commencement address at Southwest Texas State University in May 1962, then-Vice President Johnson said: ‘He who controls the weather will control the world.’

Just 18 months after giving this speech advocating for the US to control the weather, LBJ became the 36th president and would oversee two infamous projects designed to manipulate the weather – Project Stormfury and Project Popeye.

Following the speech, the records showed real government programs were already underway by 1965, such as Project Stormfury, which flew into hurricanes and seeded them with a freezing agent called silver iodide to try to weaken the storms by disrupting their inner structures.

Johnson’s letter, which is among the 18-page CIA report, from September of that year specifically mentioned the project’s work in manipulating a recent hurricane near Florida, believed to be Hurricane Betsy, which made landfall in Louisiana as a major Category 4 storm.

By 1967, however, this work expanded to Project Popeye, which was used against enemy supply lines during the Vietnam War to artificially extend the country’s monsoon season.

Intelligence officials also noted they had the full support of Johnson, who was determined to beat the Soviet Union’s efforts to control the weather as global tensions escalated.

The US government has maintained that weather modification has been used only to help weaken dangerous storms and induce rain in drought-stricken areas.

Space Force Sets Up Office to Coordinate Cislunar Programs

The Space Force announced April 16 the establishment of a Cislunar Coordination Office to manage and craft a roadmap for the service’s nascent deep-space missions under the leadership of Jaime Stearns.

In a speech at the Space Symposium here, Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy, senior advisor to the Air Force Secretary for space acquisition, announced the new civilian-led office.

“Let’s get these program management individuals and engineers together,” Purdy said. “We will build the roadmaps, we will build the scheduling, we will absolutely be looking to partner with industry.”

Stearns has held several program management roles within the Air Force Research Laboratory and most recently led strategic communications in the Space Rapid Capabilities Office.

She previously led an AFRL project called Oracle that aims to launch several cislunar domain awareness satellites in the coming years.

Cislunar space is generally defined as the region beyond geosynchronous orbit extending to the moon and even further. An Air Force Research Laboratory fact sheet describes its volume as being 1,728 times that of geosynchronous orbit.

While much of the U.S. government’s lunar focus today is centered on NASA and its push to return astronauts to the Moon through the Artemis program, the Defense Department has a handful of programs aimed at better understanding cislunar space.

The Space Force hasn’t dedicated significant funding to these efforts, but the creation of the Cislunar Coordination Office indicates the service is thinking more seriously about its role in the region.

Officials have said that shift is linked to a White House executive order, released in January, that describes the military’s space responsibilities as extending from very low Earth orbit to cislunar and calls for more investment in deep-space navigation capabilities.

Speaking with reporters in February at AFA’s Warfare Symposium in Aurora, Colo., Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman said the executive order’s mention of cislunar operations is significant.

“Just having that discussion at that level is tremendous for us,” Saltzman said. “It helps with resources. … As U.S. interests go further and further into space, there’s going to be a need to protect and defend those interests.”

The Space Force’s new coordination office will partner with other entities like the intelligence community and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, but Purdy said it will work most closely with NASA.

“NASA has obviously got quite an accelerating plan going on there,” he said. “They have quite a lot of activity, from a [positioning, navigation, and timing] and comms perspective.

They own that mission, so we look forward to partnering with them and then getting out to industry and figuring out how you can plug in there.”

JUST IN: U.S. Rep. David Scott (D-GA), who represented Georgia's 13th District for over two decades, has died at the age of 80.

Scott had been running for a 13th term ahead of the May 19th primaries at the time of his death.

His political career spanned more than 50 years, beginning with his election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974, followed by a state Senate seat in 1982, and his election to the newly created 13th Congressional District — covering DeKalb and Gwinnett counties — in 2003.

Two people were killed and at least 12 others injured when a Ukrainian drone strike led to the partial collapse of an apartment block in the city of Syzran in Russia’s Samara Region, local authorities have said.

The bodies of a woman and a child were recovered from the rubble of the four-story building, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev wrote in a post on Max on Wednesday morning.

Two of the injured required hospitalization, while the rest received treatment on site, he added.

“I express my sincere condolences to those who lost their loved ones. We’re seeing another inhumane criminal act against civilians,” the governor said.

The local emergencies ministry said earlier that there were at least two children among the wounded.

Some 300 rescuers and more than 80 units of specialized equipment had been involved in the search and rescue operation, which went on for several hours, according to the ministry.

A fire broke out in another multi-story apartment block in the same area of Syzran as result of a UAV attack, Shot Telegram channel reported.

There were no injuries and the blaze was being extinguished at the time the story was posted. Two cars parked outside were destroyed by fire due to being hit by debris from the drone, according to the channel.

Syzran, with a population of approximately 165,000, is the third largest city in Samara Region. It is located on the right bank of the Saratov Reservoir on the Volga River.

Russia was subject to another major Ukrainian drone attack overnight, with the Defense Ministry in Moscow saying that a total of 155 UAVs were destroyed by air defenses in Kursk, Samara, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Saratov, Penza, Ulyanovsk, Volgograd, Rostov and Krasnodar Regions as well as in Crimea and over the Black Sea.

The raids have intensified since mid-March, with Kiev deploying hundreds of fixed-wing UAVs almost on a daily basis, targeting critical infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and residential areas inside Russia.

The officials in Moscow have described the aerial incursions as “terrorist attacks” meant to compensate for the setbacks Kiev’s military has been suffering on the battlefield.

Moscow has retaliated with a long-range strike campaign of its own, targeting dual-use infrastructure, including power grid facilities and military sites in Ukraine with missiles and drones. Russia maintains that it never targets purely civilian sites.

NPR Admits That It Could Get the Rich Libs to Pay For Coverage Trashing Conservatives Instead of Forcing Conservatives to Foot the Bill

NPR’s business model has — or, blessedly, had — always been providing hard-left content to rich urban liberals and forcing everyone, including the conservatives they trashed, to pay for it via their tax dollars.

Not that they’d acknowledge that. NPR’s claim was that they got basically 1 percent of their annual revenue from your tax dollars, then would insist in the next breath they desperately needed that 1 percent.

Both of these were half-truths: A federal entity called NPR only got 1 percent of the public broadcaster’s revenue from tax dollars, but that was just the national organization; when you added up all the subsidies, direct and indirect, to NPR and its stations through other forms of taxpayer largesse, that number was roughly at least a quarter of its operating budget — which it did desperately need under its former business model.

Last May, President Donald Trump signed an executive order cutting off taxpayer funds from going to NPR (and its television cousin, PBS) from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting: “At the very least, Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage,” he said in a statement at the time.

Both Sen. Bernie Sanders' Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act and the Ultra-Millionaire Tax Act — sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and others — are currently legislative proposals, meaning they have been introduced in Congress but have not yet been passed or formally considered.

The Sanders proposal would provide annual $3,000 payments to many Americans, funded by a 5% tax on 938 U.S. billionaires.

What would need to happen for a new stimulus check?

For Americans to receive any new stimulus payment, a formal legislative process would have to take place, and there is no guarantee Congress would approve such checks.

On Dec. 21, during an interview with CBS News’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said stimulus checks remain a possibility for 2026.

"The deficit relative to last year is down by $600 billion and so, in the summer, I wasn't so sure that there was space for a check like that. But now I'm pretty sure that there is, and so, I would expect that in the new year, the president will bring forth a proposal to Congress to make that happen," said Hassett.
