BRUSSELS/PARIS, April 20 (Reuters) – The European Union will expand the criteria of its Iran sanctions to include those responsible for blocking the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely shut for nearly two months upending global energy and commodities markets, two EU diplomats said.

Tehran effectively closed the strait after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28, cutting off roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

More than a dozen tankers sailed through Hormuz after Iran briefly declared it open on Friday, but the ceasefire agreement was thrown into jeopardy after the United States seized an Iranian cargo ship as it maintained its own military blockade of Iranian ports.

“There was a political agreement among ambassadors that we indeed would change the criteria in Iran’s sanctions regime so that we could also list persons and entities that are responsible for the obstruction of the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” one of the diplomats said.

A second diplomatic source said the European External Action Service would need a few weeks to prepare any new listings. The EEAS is in charge of placing people and companies under sanctions while the European Commission handles sector-wide restrictions.

In January, the EU designated Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and in March it listed Iranian officials for human rights violations.

MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF ENERGY

SUBJECT: Presidential Determination Pursuant to Section 303 of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as Amended, on Grid Infrastructure, Equipment, and Supply Chain Capacity

On January 20, 2025, I issued Executive Order 14156 (Declaring a National Energy Emergency), under the National Emergencies Act. That order found that America’s inadequate energy production, transportation, and infrastructure constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the Nation’s economy, national security, and foreign policy. It further recognized that foreign adversaries have exploited these vulnerabilities, and that an affordable and reliable domestic supply of energy, including the infrastructure needed to generate, transmit, and deliver it, is essential to ensuring United States defense readiness, economic strength, and energy independence.

Consistent with that declaration, I find that America’s aging and constrained electric grid infrastructure poses an increasing threat to national defense. The Nation’s capacity to design, produce, and deploy large-scale grid infrastructure, including transformers, high-voltage transmission components, advanced conductors, power electronics, substations, and grid-supporting manufacturing equipment, is dangerously limited. These supply chains face significant risks due to foreign competition, long production lead times, and an overreliance on imported equipment. As a result, the United States remains vulnerable in the event of war, disaster, or economic disruption.

Therefore, by the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 303 of the Defense Production Act of 1950, as amended (the “Act”) (50 U.S.C. 4533), I hereby determine, pursuant to section 303(a)(5) of the Act, that:

(1) grid infrastructure and its associated upstream supply chains, including transformers, transmission lines and conductors, substations, high-voltage circuit breakers, power control electronics, protective relay systems, capacitor banks, electrical core steel, and related raw materials and manufacturing tools, are industrial resources, materials, or critical technology items essential to the national defense;

(2) without Presidential action under section 303 of the Act, United States industry cannot reasonably be expected to provide these capabilities for the needed industrial resource, material, or critical technology items in a timely manner due to limited domestic production capacity, extended procurement timelines, foreign supply dependence, and insufficient capital investment; and

(3) purchases, purchase commitments, financial support for the development of production capabilities, or other action pursuant to section 303 of the Act are the most cost-effective, expedient, and practical alternative methods for meeting this need.

I have declared a national emergency under Executive Order 14156, and I further determine that action to expand the domestic capability to develop, manufacture, and deploy grid infrastructure and supporting industrial supply chains is necessary to avert an industrial resource or critical technology item shortfall that would severely impair national defense capability. Therefore, pursuant to section 303(a)(7) of the Act, I waive the requirements of section 303(a)(1)-(a)(6) of the Act for the purpose of expanding such capability.

You are authorized and directed to implement this determination, including making necessary purchases, commitments, and financial instruments to enable these projects, and to publish this determination in the Federal Register.

On April 17, 2026, the commonwealth of Virginia agreed to stop its illegal voter purge program that disproportionately impacted naturalized citizens on the eve of federal elections. This is a major victory for voters after the U.S. Supreme Court permitted the potential disenfranchisement of over 1,600 eligible Virginians right before the 2024 presidential election.

The National Voter Registration Act bans the systematic removal of voters from rolls within 90 days of a federal election, known as the “quiet period.” On the first day of the quiet period prior to the 2024 general election, then-Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin directed the state’s Department of Elections to escalate its systematic list maintenance procedures to identify and purge voters. This was problematic because the data provided by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles prompting voters’ removal is faulty and outdated, and the only remedy provided to voters is a single written notice with no further efforts to confirm their eligibility. The Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights, the League of Women Voters of Virginia, African Communities Together, and two individual Virginia voters who were unlawfully purged from the voter rolls filed a lawsuit to stop this illegal purge program. Seventh Circuit Reverses U.S. District Court on Indiana Voter ID

On April 20, the Seventh Circuit stayed an order of the U.S. District Court in the case involving whether university and college ID cards can be used as voter ID in the May 4, 2026 primary. See the order here. It says that the U.S. District Court should not have issued injunctive relief to the plaintiffs, who are college students and who had sued over the 2025 law that says university and college ID cards can no longer be used to vote. The Seventh Circuit said the primary is so close (May 4) that the lower court should have left the status quo in place. The Seventh Circuit said nothing about the merits of the case, which involves equal protection and discrimination against students.

The three judges are Michael Brennan and Michael Scudder (Trump appointees) and Joshua Kolar, a Biden appointee.

Apple announced a shakeup to its top leadership Monday, with Tim Cook to become executive chairman of the company’s board of directors and John Ternus the next CEO.

In a news release, Apple said the decisions were unanimously approved of by the board, and follows a “thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.” The pair will begin their new roles on Sept. 1.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said in the news release.

U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is leaving her post, a White House official announced April 20.

The former businesswoman from Oregon who was appointed to President Donald Trump’s cabinet last year will take a position in the private sector, according to White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung.

“She has done a phenomenal job in her role by protecting American workers, enacting fair labor practices, and helping Americans gain additional skills to improve their lives,” Cheung said.

I am writing anonymously, but with deep respect and sincerity as a Jane Doe survivor of Jeffrey Epstein.

I want to be clear that I do not share the criticism from those who claim you are shifting blame onto survivors. I deeply respect your courage in speaking on such a painful issue and am grateful that you are willing to address it publicly.

Like many others, I have lived with this privately and have not felt safe enough to come forward using my name. Anonymity has been the only way I’ve been able to cope while maintaining a sense of security.

Your recent encouragement for victims to come forward and have their voices heard resonated with me. While I am not in a position to testify publicly, I would be willing to share my testimony under a Jane Doe designation or through legal representation. That is the only way I would feel safe enough to participate.

On a more personal note, I also wanted to share how much I loved your Christmas display with the blue butterflies, it was a beautiful and meaningful touch.

Please know that I keep you and your family in my prayers. I recognize the weight of your position and the strength it takes to stand firm despite criticism.

Thanks for this post, Anon.

I love that guy, Nick Shirley, like I love Charlie Kirk. Both of them gave and still give me tremendous hope for the future of our country because even though they're young enough to have been heavily brainwashed by the propagandists in the school system (K - College) they still somehow didn't get poisoned by it and they bravely (but lawfully) fought back.

It's so neat how this military-civilian alliance works together, and guys like Nick Shirley and Charlie are so helpful on the front lines.

Thank God there are still older people around, too, who have acquired lots of information, over the years, and remember a better time.

It was never perfect, in our lifetimes, but it was better.

Now that we know what we have learned here, we want to get back every part of the system that our founders created for us, not the watered-down, compromised, hijacked "Deep State" version of American government that's been crammed down our throats since at least 1913.

So it's a wonderful thing to have young and old working toward the same goal.

I tear up every time I think of the great loss of Charlie Kirk. He gave us his all.

So I'll pray hard for Nick Shirley's safety, and I'll keep working too, to ensure that Nick has a wonderful future, and his children (some day) will have a world devoid of the evil shitbags we are fighting.

Thanks again for the reminder, and I'll keep Nick and all his loved ones in my prayers.
