The ACU deployed more than 10 investigation teams and says it documented nearly 3,000 cases of extortion involving 829 cargo vehicles on National Road 48 between April 2024 and February 2026. No vehicle was spared. Fish, meat, vegetables, household goods, people relocating furniture. Taxed or untaxed, didn't matter. He also agreed to guarantee safe passage for 7,000 phones and 200 computers being moved from Prey Veng to Poipet for a Chinese-run online scam operation, for $3,500.

The ACU found he was running bribe payments through 41 bank accounts across six banks, using proxies to collect. His younger brother Mao Tithya, who was illegally employed as contract staff at the same customs office, took in around $23,000. His biological son Phal Dollar received $220,000 across 2,494 transfers from 339 people. And Pot Sreinang, described by the ACU as his "7th unofficial wife," collected $65,000 from 238 senders including 26 Chinese nationals. The ACU froze 15 accounts totaling $302,000 and seized a Phnom Penh condo, a house, land in Kampong Speu, and three vehicles.

Mao Sansona kept extorting drivers even while being called in for questioning. His checkpoint wasn't abandoned until March 15, three days before he was sent to court. The ACU described him as stubborn and evasive, never admitting to anything until confronted with specific evidence. The case then turned inward. ACU investigator Chim Oun was caught on video receiving $20,000 in bundled hundreds from associates of Mao Sansona to shut down the probe. Chim Oun, a second ACU staffer, and a legal assistant were all sent to court on March 16. In total, the ACU referred 10 people to court in March, including two of its own.

Australia will join a virtual meeting of 35 countries to discuss plans to reopen and secure the Strait of Hormuz and ease an oil shock rocking global markets.

The meeting will be led by the United Kingdom, which has coordinated efforts to gather countries willing to contribute to reopening the Strait.
