The Brief

A Tennessee grandmother was jailed after AI facial recognition misidentified her in a North Dakota fraud case.

Her attorney said she had evidence showing she was in Tennessee at the time.

Charges were dismissed after she spent weeks in custody.

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. - A Tennessee grandmother claims she spent time in jail, accused of a crime she didn't commit, because authorities had used AI facial recognition to incorrectly identify her as the suspect.

Dig deeper:

Angela Lipps, 50, was accused of committing bank fraud with a fake U.S. Army military ID to take out thousands of dollars between April and May 2025 in North Dakota.

According to charging documents provided by her attorney Eric Rice to FOX Television Stations, authorities in Fargo had used facial recognition software to identify Lipps as the suspect seen in surveillance videos.

According to WCYB, arrest reports show Lipps was taken to North Dakota at the end of October, then finally released at the end of December.

Rice told the news outlet an AI program appeared to select her face. An officer later reviewed her social media, determined she was a sufficient match and obtained an arrest warrant.

"She remained in custody until the charges were dismissed," Rice added. "She did have exculpatory evidence available, such as records showing she was in Tennessee at the time. I don’t know why it took multiple months for that information to reach the state, but once it did, the charges were dismissed relatively quickly."

The other side:

Assistant Chief Travis Stefonowicz of the Fargo Police Department provided additional details to FOX Television Stations regarding the case.

According to Stefonowicz, Lipps was arrested in Tennessee on July 14, 2025, for a probation violation. She remained in custody there until Tennessee authorities notified the Cass County Sheriff’s Office on October 20, 2025, that she had waived extradition to North Dakota and was ready for transport.

Officials said it remains unclear whether the length of her detention in Tennessee was due to serving time for the violation or delays related to extradition.

Lipps made her first court appearance in North Dakota on October 31, 2025. However, the assigned detective was not aware she was in custody in the state until December 5, 2025. Because she had legal representation, investigators needed approval from her attorney before conducting an interview, which was granted on December 19.

Following that interview, authorities determined further investigation was needed. On December 23, the Fargo Police Department, Cass County State’s Attorney, and a presiding judge agreed to dismiss the charges without prejudice to allow for additional inquiry. Lipps was released from the Cass County Jail the following day.

The department also clarified its stance on facial recognition technology, stating it does not own or directly use such systems. However, investigators may occasionally request assistance from external state or national intelligence centers that utilize facial recognition to help generate leads.

Following a comprehensive internal review, Stefonowicz acknowledged that the initial investigation could have been more thorough. In response, the department has implemented a formal policy governing the use of facial recognition technology. The new policy, adopted March 25, establishes clear guidelines, marking a shift from prior practice where no formal policy existed because the department did not directly operate such tools.

Tehran has warned Kiev it would become a legitimate target if its involvement in the US-Israeli war continues, Farhad Ibragimov has said

An Iranian strike that reportedly destroyed a depot of Ukrainian anti-drone systems in Dubai served as a “slap in the face” to Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, a Middle East expert has told RT.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Navy and Aerospace Division reportedly hit the depot while targeting US military sites in Dubai. Ukraine, however, has denied that the reported incident took place.

Farhad Ibragimov, a Middle East expert at Russia’s Financial University, said that the strike should be seen as a clear signal from Tehran to Kiev and its backers that Ukrainian assets would be “legitimate targets” if Kiev was involved in the US-Israeli war against Iran.

Ibragimov characterized the Dubai attack as an initial warning – a “light slap” – which could be followed by a stronger hit if Kiev continues to seek involvement in the conflict.

The warning was Iran’s way of responding to Ukraine’s involvement “in deeds, not words,” he suggested, adding that Tehran “would be prepared to declare war on the Kiev regime if it does not back down.”

According to Ibragimov, Iranian officials see Zelensky as a figure they should not “stand on ceremony” with and believe he must be addressed in a language he understands.

Pakistan and China release plan to end war; White House reportedly doesn’t oppose it

Pakistan and China issue a joint call for an immediate ceasefire in Iran, followed by peace talks between the US and Iran.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing, after which they issued their five-point initiative.

Sheriff Who Handled Surrender of Charlie Kirk Assassination Suspect Abruptly RESIGNS After 30 Years

According to KUTV, Brooksby quietly submitted his resignation last Friday, with county officials confirming his departure and thanking him for his service.

“We express our sincere appreciation for his dedication and service to Washington County,” the county said in a statement.

According to ABC4, Brooksby met with county commissioners on Friday to discuss vague “complaints” about office operations. Hours later, he resigned on the spot.

The news outlet added that “the individuals who made the complaints against the Sheriff’s Office have requested that no further action be taken, a request that is being respected.”

Sheriff Brooksby was the man who personally facilitated the surrender of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old charged with gunning down Charlie Kirk in broad daylight at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.

According to Brooksby himself, Robinson was “fearful of being shot” and insisted on turning himself in under carefully managed conditions.

The sheriff worked with a retired deputy and the suspect’s family to arrange the surrender, an unusual process for a suspect accused of a politically motivated assassination.

Robinson ultimately turned himself in after a 33-hour manhunt.

Just hours before Brooksby’s resignation became public, bombshell reports emerged from Robinson’s defense team.

On the same day Boorksby resigned, Tyler Robinson’s attorneys filed a motion seeking to postpone his May 18 preliminary hearing, pointing to an ATF report that determined toolmark analysis on a bullet jacket recovered during Kirk’s autopsy was inconclusive due to extensive damage.

According to court filings, an ATF ballistics analysis was unable to connect the bullet recovered from Charlie Kirk’s body to the .30-06 rifle allegedly used by Robinson.

“The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was unable to identify the bullet recovered at autopsy to the rifle allegedly tied to Mr. Robinson,” the defense stated, citing federal reports.
