Bank of America agrees to pay $72.5 million to settle Epstein survivors suit

The lawsuit alleges BofA provided banking services to Epstein and his sex-trafficking operation, along with accounts used by associates including Ghislaine Maxwell.

Bank of America has agreed to pay $72.5 million to survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking operationwho allege the bank enabled and profited from his crimes.

The lawsuit, filed last year, alleges that the nation’s second-largest bank provided banking services to Epstein and his sex-trafficking operation, along with accounts used by victims and associates —among them Ghislaine Maxwell and Leon Black, the former CEO of Apollo Global Management.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, who is presiding over the case, will hold a hearing in April to determine whether to approve the settlement.

The deal does not include an admission of liability by the bank.

“While we stand by our prior statements made in the filings in this case, including thatBank of America did not facilitate sex trafficking crimes, this resolutionallows us to put this matter behind us and provides further closure for the plaintiffs,” a Bank of America spokesperson told NBC News.

Attorneys for the victims didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The settlement covers all women “who were sexually abused or trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, or by any person who is connected to or otherwise associated with Jeffrey Epstein or any Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking venture” between June 30, 2008, and July 6, 2019, according to a filing by the victims’ lawyers. Attorneys for the survivors say at least 60 women who were victimized by Epstein during that period.

The plaintiffs allege the bank failed to properly monitor accounts and did not file timely suspicious activity reports concerning questionable transactions, including transfers Black made to Epstein from his Bank of America account. Among them:$170 million described as payment for “tax and estate planning advice,”which the plaintiffs contend was used to fund Epstein’s trafficking enterprise.

Black had been scheduled for an eight-hour deposition this month,with victim’s attorney Sigrid McCawley describing him as a “critical witness.” However, he avoided the deposition when the parties notified the court of a settlement last week.

Black is not a defendant in the suit against Bank of America. He has denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein’s criminal conduct. A spokesperson for Black declined to comment.

Epstein survivors have brought similar lawsuits against JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank thatwere later settled for hundreds of millions of dollars. JPMorgan agreed to pay $290 million, and Deutsche Bank paid $75 million to victims.

US says more ships moving through Hormuz, urges allies to step up

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said more vessels are moving through the Strait of Hormuz and urged other countries to take a greater role in securing the waterway.

“There are many more vessels flowing through today,” Hegseth told reporters, adding the United States has options to ensure the strait remains open.

“It’s not just the United States Navy…the world ought to be prepared to stand up,”he said, calling it an international waterway.

US says pressuring Iran military capabilities, monitoring rivals

Hegseth said US operations have focused on weakening Iran’s naval and missile capabilities, including cruise missiles, drones and financing networks.

“We’ve been focused from the beginning on attrition and defeating those capabilities,” he said.

He added the United States ismonitoring support for Iran from countries such as Russia and China, saying,“We know exactly what they’re doing…where necessary, we’re addressing it.”

Hegseth said the United States would not rule out any options, including ground forces.

“You can’t fight and win a war if you tell your adversary what you are willing to do,”he said.

He added US objectives include dismantling Iran’s missile program and ensuring it does not obtain a nuclear weapon.

Iran warns of false-flag operations in call with Turkey

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of what he described as false-flag operations aimed at undermining regional ties during a call with his Turkish counterpart.

The call came a day after NATO intercepted a ballistic missile fired from Iran over Turkey.

Birthright Citizenship Is Not Actually in the Constitution

The question of whether birthright citizenship should be abolished is based on the faulty premise that our Constitution actually mandates it. In fact, the text of the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause reads: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

That text has two requirements for citizenship — that an individual is born on U.S. soil; and that an individual is subject to the jurisdiction of the United States when born.

“Subject to the jurisdiction” means more than simply being present in the United States. When the 14th Amendment was being debated in the Senate, Senator Lyman Trumbull, a key figure in its drafting and adoption, stated that “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States meant not “owing allegiance to anybody else.”

The drafters of the clause modeled it off of the 1866 Civil Rights Act which grants citizenship to “all persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power.”

And Senator Jacob Howard, who introduced the language of the clause on the floor of the Senate, contended that it should be interpreted in the same way as the requirement of the 1866 Civil Rights Act, which afforded citizenship to “all persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power.”

The Supreme Court has never held otherwise. Some advocates for illegal immigrants point to the 1898 case of United States v. Wong Kim Ark, but that case merely held that a child born on U.S. soil to parents who were lawful, permanent (legally, "domiciled") residents was a citizen.

The broader language in the case suggesting that birth on U.S. soil is alone sufficient (thereby rendering the “subject to the jurisdiction" clause meaningless) is only dicta — not binding. The court did not specifically consider whether those born to parents who were in the United States unlawfully were automatically citizens.

The misunderstood policy of birthright citizenship provides a powerful magnet for people to violate our immigration laws and undermines the plenary power over naturalization that the Constitution explicitly gives to Congress. It is long past time to clarify that the 14th Amendment does not grant U.S. citizenship to the children of anyone just because they can manage to give birth on U.S. soil.

Dozens of IRGC-linked money changers arrested in UAE

Dozens of money changers linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards were arrestedin the United Arab Emirates after tensions rose following attacks by the Islamic Republic, sources familiar with the matter told Iran International.

The sources said the detainees had worked with financial entities tied to the Islamic Republic, including companies linked to the Guards, helping transfer funds on their behalf.

They said companies linked to those arrested were shut down and their offices closed.

UAE authorities also summoned some other money changers and told them to leave the country, the sources said.

The development follows earlier measures targeting Iranian nationals in the UAE. In recent days, some Iranian residents outside the country found their residency visas revoked before returning, preventing re-entry, according to accounts received by Iran International on Saturday.

Several affected individuals said the cancellations were carried out without prior notice. One Iranian resident said that after traveling to India with his family following the outbreak of war,he discovered his residency had been revoked, while his non-Iranian family members were still allowed to return to the UAE.

Earlier reports had also pointed to the cancellation of tourist visas for Iranian nationals traveling to the country.
