A driver plowed a black Suzuki Swift into a crowd of pedestrians in the heart of the UK’s Derby city centre late Saturday night, injuring “numerous” people, some seriously, in what police are describing as a “major incident.”

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Friar Gate area, a popular area filled with bars, restaurants, and shops.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found injured people lying on the pavement, blood on the ground, and bystanders screaming for help.

Paramedics treated victims at the scene before transporting many to local hospitals.

Derbyshire Police confirmed that a man in his 30s was arrested shortly after the incident and remains in custody.

Canada’s House of Commons passed Bill C-9, the so-called “Combating Hate Act,” in a 186-137 vote Wednesday night.

Liberals and the Bloc voted in lockstep to strip away long-standing protections for religious speech under the Criminal Code. Conservatives, the NDP, and the Greens opposed it. The bill now heads to the Senate.

The bill expands Canada’s hate speech laws and introduces new criminal penalties for what the government defines as the “willful promotion of hatred” against protected groups.

This “anti-hate” legislation guts the good-faith religious defense in Section 319 of the Criminal Code. That defense used to shield Canadians from prosecution when they expressed opinions “based on a belief in a religious text.”

Two suspected Ukrainian drones have crashed in Finland, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has reported, conjecturing that the UAVs were launched as part of Kiev’s latest attacks on neighboring Russia’s Leningrad Region.

In a post on X on Sunday, Orpo wrote that the “drones have strayed into Finnish territory,” and that the incident was being investigated by local authorities and the Defense Forces.

The Finnish prime minister characterized the “territorial violation as a very serious matter,” as quoted by Yle News.

Later in the day, in an X post of his own, President Alexander Stubb revealed that “one of the drones has been confirmed to be Ukrainian in origin.” The Finnish Air Force previously identified it as an AN196 model used by Kiev’s military.

Stubb emphasized that while “there is no military threat to Finland… the authorities maintain readiness to react to future incidents.”

There have been no reports of casualties on the ground as a result of the incident.

According to the Nordic country’s Defense Ministry, “several small, slow-flying, low-flying objects were observed in Finnish airspace over the sea and in southeastern Finland on Sunday morning.”

F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets were deployed to monitor the drones, but did not use suppressive fire so as to avoid collateral damage, according to Yle News.

Yemen’s Houthi armed forces announced their formal entry into the conflict in the Middle East, firing several missiles at Israel.

The group, which controls the Yemeni capital Sanaa and much of the country’s north, has stayed out of the action since the US and Israel first attacked Tehran on February 28.

But on Saturday, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree issued a statement, declaring support for Tehran and other “resistance” factions in the region.

The group is compelled to begin military operations against the US, Israel and their allies due to ongoing escalation, attacks on infrastructure, and “atrocities” committed in Lebanon, Iran, Iraq and the Gaza Strip, he said.

”Our fingers are on the trigger” if any nation decides to join the strikes by Washington and West Jerusalem or if the Red Sea is used for targeting Iran, Saree warned.

The day itself, July 5, 1908, was one of several days of an event called the Dominion Exhibition, which was an annual agricultural exposition funded and selected by the feds, and held for the first time in Calgary that year.

According to a report by CBC News, about 100,000 people attended the exhibition — a large feat compared to the city's population, which in 1908 was approximately 25,000.

Saskatoon Teacher Awarded Heroism Medal for Rescuing Student Set on Fire

A teacher who suffered burns to his face and hands while saving a student set on fire at a Saskatoon high school has been awarded North America’s highest honour for civilian heroism.

Sean Hayes, a 33-year-old teacher at Evan Hardy Collegiate, was among 18 recipients to receive the U.S. Carnegie Medal for Heroism for his exceptional acts of bravery in 2024.

“All the men and women recognized today risked serious injury or death, or were killed, saving or attempting to save others in acts of extraordinary heroism,” the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission announced on March 24.

The incident centres on a 15-year-old girl who was set on fire by a classmate in the high school hallway on Sept. 5, 2024. The 14-year-old attacker splashed the victim with lighter fluid before igniting it, burning the victim’s hair, face, and torso.

The commission shared an account of what happened, adding it was reviewed by Hayes.

The account detailed that Hayes was in the hallway when the attack occurred. “He immediately instructed a co-worker to call 911 and instructed the girl to move to the ground,” the commission wrote, noting that the teacher then got on his hands and knees and tried to roll the victim back and forth to extinguish the flames, but was impeded by her backpack.

Hayes proceeded to pat out the flames using his hands, but realized his own clothes had caught fire. He stood up, pressed himself against some lockers, and removed his overshirt and T-shirt, the commission said.

The Saskatoon teacher then used his overshirt to stamp out the fire on the girl’s body, and when it was damaged by the flames, he used a co-worker’s shirt to continue putting out the fire. Continue…

Psychiatrists are welcoming a reform of Quebec's mental health law that would lower the threshold for involuntary hospitalization, while lawyers and advocates for patients warn the changes could infringe on rights without addressing a lack of mental health resources across the province.

Health Minister Sonia Bélanger tabled Bill 23 — the overhaul of Quebec's mental health law, known as P-38 — on Tuesday. Premier François Legault had promised to make the changes following the death of Quebec police officer Maureen Breau, who was killed by a man experiencing a mental health crisis in 2023. The man had been allowed to live outside of an institution despite being considered "a significant risk to public safety." The bill also comes two weeks after Plateau-Mont-Royal dépanneur owner Chong Woo Kim was stabbed to death by a man who had a violent criminal past, and who police had attempted and failed to preventatively detain in hospital in August.

In addition to lowering the threshold for involuntary hospitalization from a "serious and immediate" danger to situations where there is a risk of danger — allowing earlier interventions — the overhaul would also allow some procedures, like psychiatric evaluations, to happen without consent. Some decisions related to involuntary hospitalization would also be handled by an administrative tribunal instead of the courts.

Bélanger said the change is aimed "primarily at better supporting individuals whose mental state could pose a risk to their own safety or that of others." Continue…

Public servants can now apply for early retirement incentives

Now that the federal budget bill has received royal assent, the Treasury Board has started implementing early retirement incentives it is offering to public servants.

The Treasury Board is set to open a portal on its website where public servants who qualify for the incentive can apply by July 24. The incentives were announced in Budget 2025 as part of the federal government’s attempts to trim the size of the public service.

The government is planning to cut the public service by around 30,000 jobs over several years and has said it wants to do so mostly through voluntary departures.

If an eligible public servant is granted the incentive, they will be able to retire early without any penalties on their pensions.

Last December, about 68,000 public servants received letters notifying them that they were eligible for the incentives. There are two eligible groups of employees.

The first group includes those who joined the public service on or before Dec. 31, 2012, are at least 50 years old and have at least two years of pensionable service and 10 years of employment within the public service.

The second group includes those who joined the public service on or after Jan. 1, 2013, are at least 55 years old and have at least two years of pensionable service and 10 years of employment within the public service.

At a parliamentary committee on March 26, the day the budget bill received royal assent, Treasury Board Secretary Bill Matthews told parliamentarians that the program did not mean “anyone who wants to go gets to go.” Continue…

Mark Carney let it slip he finds economics “sexy,” but at least he was in a safe space when he did it.

The prime minister was in Halifax on Friday to address a ballroom full of Nova Scotia’s business leaders and got caught up in his optimism around the province’s future.

While discussing the region’s potential for growth in sectors like green energy, Carney expressed himself freely when host interviewer Seamus O’Regan suggested that government regulations probably aren’t all that sexy to hear about for the estimated 1,100 guests at a Halifax Chamber of Commerce gathering at the Halifax Convention Centre.

Eleven months after a vehicle tore through a crowded Lapu Lapu Day festival, killing 11 people, survivor Blaine Redlac says he is still searching for answers — about what happened that day and how more than $1 million in donations have been used.

Friday, the 29-year-old stood in a downtown plaza outside the offices of Filipino B.C., standing on a leg shattered in the April 26 attack. The impact hurled him 10 metres and killed his fiancée, Jendhel May Sico.
