The Vancouver Sun noted: “The unanimous decision by three B.C. Court of Appeal judges recognized Aboriginal title over 210 square kilometres of the West Coast island, an almost 20-fold increase over the area granted in a 2024 B.C. Supreme Court finding.”
Reacting to the ruling, a law professor Dwight Newman, University of Saskatchewan, told the Sun: “There is a significant conclusion here in terms of a readiness to infer sufficient occupation based on a more limited evidentiary record.”
A half dozen Indigenous nations intervened in support of the Nuchatlaht, anticipating findings that would support their own title claims.
Although privately held land was not targeted, Provincial Crown land was included, as well as a provincial park where the public may no longer have access. “The court found that the Forest Act and the Park Act would no longer apply to the newly recognized Aboriginal title lands, said Newman.
“Crown land that was being used by ordinary British Columbians may or may not continue to be accessible to them, and the environmental management of a provincial park is now under a newly divided regime between the province and a First Nation.”
BC NDP Attorney general Niki Sharma says the province “will take the time needed to assess the implications and our legal options going forward.”
Yet the BC NDP refuses to disclose to media, the Opposition parties or the public how many other claims are currently in the courts.

A sweeping Nova Scotia ban on entering wooded areas has been struck down by the province’s Supreme Court, which ruled the emergency order was unreasonable and failed to properly consider Canadians’ Charter rights.
The decision comes after a constitutional challenge brought by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms on behalf of Canadian Armed Forces veteran Jeffrey Evely, who was fined $28,872.50 for walking in the woods during the 2025 wildfire prohibition.
The court found the province’s decision-making process was fundamentally flawed and said there was no evidence officials considered mobility rights before imposing the restriction.
“There is no evidence in the record that when the minister issued the proclamation there was any consideration given to mobility rights,” the ruling stated.
The court determined the ban engaged section 6 mobility rights under the Charter by restricting movement across the province and also potentially implicated section 7 rights. Continue…

Sukhvinder Kaur Sangha pleaded guilty to unlawful importation in 2024 after her October 2021 arrest by the Canada Border Services Agency for fleeing a border crossing in Surrey, B.C., at “high speed” in a rental vehicle.
Police estimated the drugs found in her car were worth between $1 million and $10 million, according to court documents outlining the judge’s reasoning for the sentence.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice John Gibb-Carsley ruled in New Westminster on April 10 that the 47-year-old mother gave “untruthful testimony” by claiming she was threatened and coerced into smuggling drugs, but he bypassed the prosecutor’s suggested sentence of 10 to 12 years in favour of 5.5 years.
Gibb-Carsley said the sentence strikes a balance between deterrence and consideration of the personal circumstances of Sangha, who has three adult sons.
“If individuals such as Ms. Sangha escape consequences, it sends a message to organized crime and drug traffickers to recruit these individuals to participate with the promise of money and without the fear of lengthy incarceration,“ the judge said. ”That could set a dangerous precedent.” Continue…

Former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig told MPs that Ottawa’s agreement with Beijing to open its markets to Chinese electric vehicles puts Canada at risk of “deeper economic entanglement” with China and dependency that could erode Canada’s sovereignty.
Kovrig made the comments as he testified on April 16 before the House of Commons science and research committee, which is studying the implications of the Canada–China preliminary joint arrangement on Canada’s electric vehicle sector.
Kovrig, a China scholar, was detained in China for more than 1,000 days, along with fellow Canadian Michael Spavor, in apparent retaliation by Beijing after Canada executed a U.S. extradition warrant in late 2018 for Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and arrested her in Vancouver.
“Opening Canada’s market to electric vehicles from the People’s Republic of China should be assessed not as a normal trade agreement, but rather as a tactical gamble that risks deep entanglement with an increasingly totalitarian one-party state,” Kovrig told MPs. Continue…

A former officer with Canada’s intelligence service told MPs the arrival of Chinese electric vehicles in Canada poses not only a surveillance threat but also a risk to the electrical grid.
Neil Bisson, who spent 18 years as an officer with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), assessed the threat from Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) during his appearance before the House of Commons industry committee on April 16.
“In effect, each Chinese manufactured EV is an extraordinary source of valuable data, the potential eyes and ears of the PRC, and we are on the verge of importing and dispersing tens of thousands of them across Canada,” Bisson told the committee.

As Ottawa forges closer ties with Beijing, a foreign affairs official told MPs he believes the federal government still sees China as an “increasingly disruptive power.”
Foreign Affairs Assistant Deputy Minister Weldon Epp made the comments on April 16 while appearing before the House of Commons foreign affairs committee, which is studying the review of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Canada’s 2022 Indo-Pacific Strategy called China “an increasingly disruptive global power,” and said Beijing is “looking to shape the international order into a more permissive environment for interests and values that increasingly depart from ours.”
Conservative MP Tamara Kronis asked Epp during the committee meeting whether Canada still sees China as a disruptive force in the Indo-Pacific region.
Epp responded that “disruptive” is “not a pejorative word, it’s a descriptive word.”

Canada will not be the reason for any delay in negotiations over the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, according to Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
“We’re ready to do the work to get to a deal very quickly,” LeBlanc told reporters following a meeting of the House of Commons standing committee on international trade on April 16. “We certainly won’t be the source of any delay.”
LeBlanc said Ottawa has submitted several proposals to the U.S. negotiating team, and continues to have “a number of constructive meetings at all levels.”
The minister earlier told the committee that he had a “positive” 45-minute conversation with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, but would not reveal details of their chat.
Conservative MP Jacob Mantle asked LeBlanc about comments made weeks earlier by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who said discussions had been more productive with the Mexicans than the Canadians. He said there had been “no substantive discussions” with the Canadians for five months.

Ford said the plane will actually make Ontario money and help create jobs.

But when it was all done, Ontario came out well.
“We landed six billion dollars of investments,” he said.

The photos were posted by her father, David Gebala, with a simple heart emoji above them. Her mother, Cia Edmonds, who posts as “Cia Later,” then reposted the images and added: “My girls amaze me everyday.”
The pictures are also available on Maya’s Path of Resilience, a public Facebook group with close to 80,000 members.

Sanchez, speaking during a visit to China, said the gatherings were intended to show that left-wing governments could work together.

According to a report from the New York Post, in a 2020 interview, Eskridge explicitly warned that she felt escalating threats and said she needed to go public soon for her own safety.
“I need to disclose soon, man. I need to publish soon because it’s like escalating. It’s getting more and more aggressive,” Eskridge said.
“This has been going on for like four or five years, and over the past 12 months, it’s been escalating, like more aggressive, more invasive digging through my underwear drawer and sexual threats.”
She told associates that going public was safer than keeping the work private, stating, “If you stick your neck out in private… they will bury you, they will burn down your house while you’re sleeping in your bed and it won’t even make the news.”
Retired British intelligence officer Franc Milburn, who partnered with Eskridge to investigate the harassment, submitted findings to Congress in 2023.
Milburn concluded her death was not a suicide and alleged she had been subjected to multiple physical and psychological attacks, including a suspected “directed energy weapon” incident that caused microwave burns on her body, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Eskridge’s father, Richard Eskridge, is a longtime NASA plasma physicist, adding another layer of high-level scientific connections to the case.

The saga has been featured in Ukrainian media, which says that despite a formal government-to-government request, Israeli authorities didn't stop the shipment.
Some 43,765 tonnes of wheat - loaded at Russia’s Kavkaz port and believed to originate from Ukrainian regions controlled by the Russian military - was allowed to be unloaded.
Ukraine is still expressing hope for "fruitful and constructive interaction" between both sides, with its embassy in contact with Israeli officials, but Tel Aviv does not appear to be as eager to intervene.

The most recent X post circulating this warning appears to have been posted by Yaniv himself — or at least from an old account belonging to him.
Yaniv, who now also uses the name Jessica Simpson, has a lengthy and controversial history with the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal.
The Langley resident became widely known after filing more than a dozen complaints between 2018 and 2019 against female estheticians and small waxing businesses, alleging discrimination for refusing to provide Brazilian waxing services on his male genitalia.
The tribunal dismissed the majority of those complaints, with adjudicators citing improper motives, bad-faith conduct and an apparent pattern of targeting small businesses for financial gain in some rulings. Costs were awarded against Yaniv in at least one case. Yaniv has continued filing complaints in the years since.
In the most recent social-media post, which has been circulating among landlords and critics of Yaniv, the unidentified landlord describes receiving an inquiry about a basement-suite rental.
When the landlord asked for proper documentation for the claimed service dog, Yaniv reportedly became confrontational and sent a PDF asserting that no such documents were required.
The landlord said the booking to view the property was cancelled and the individual was blocked.
A subsequent text message from a different number then informed the landlord of an impending human-rights discrimination complaint seeking $25,000 in compensation, according to the post. Continue…
