YouTube Is Selling So Many Political Ads It Has Run Out Of Videos To Place Them On

While social media makes its best attempt at trying to get Joe Biden elected by censoring stories about his son, YouTube is facing another dilemma: the platform is so inundated with political ads it has nowhere to put them.

As advertising campaigns flood the platform, YouTube has "struggled" to place the ads in front of the desired audience for each, according to Bloomberg.

Interestingly enough, YouTube is experiencing the shortage most in "critical swing states", where ad prices have doubled as a result. This, obviously, makes political advertising far more lucrative for Google, who saw ad revenue fall this year and will announcing its earnings next week.

Cat Stern, media director for Lockwood Strategy Lab, a digital campaign agency focused on Democratic candidates and progressive advocacy organizations, told Bloomberg: “There’s a crunch. All political advertisers are buying in the same states, to similar audiences.”

YouTube viewers have risen during the pandemic and while commercial ads have been "anemic", political ads have spiked heading into November 3. In highest demand are the ads that users aren't allowed to skip through. There are also ad "reservations" for YouTube's most popular videos that are in high demand.

Reid Vineis, vice president of digital at Majority Strategies, a Republican political ad firm, said: “The reserves tend to be gobbled up by well-funded campaigns.”

While this occurs, other less-well-funded campaigns have turned to platforms like Hulu and Roku to run their ads.

Some states, like Iowa, are usually entirely sold out on YouTube. Tim Cameron, co-founder of FlexPoint Media, said: “A lot of late money that’s coming on board – it’s difficult to find anywhere to put it.”

At some points, YouTube has been unable to place up to 75% of the amounts that people are willing to spend. YouTube didn't comment for Bloomberg's article, but the article notes that a "code yellow" was assigned to Google's staff regarding the inability to place ads, meaning Google was increasing the resources it was deploying to try and solve the issue.

Google has sole more than $139 million in political ads over the last month alone.

Joe Biden Promises to Push Elected Officials into Issuing Mask Mandates Nationwide

Former Vice President Joe Biden is promising that, if elected, he would urge state and local governments to issue mask mandates nationwide.

The Democrat nominee, who has shifted on his support for a federal mask mandate, told supporters in Delaware on Friday that it was vital for the government to implement a “national strategy to position our country to finally get ahead of this virus.” As part of the strategy, the former vice president promised not only to get a spending bill, that deals with both the economic and public safety aspects of the novel coronavirus, through Congress by January, but also to push for comprehensive mask mandates.

“I’ll go to every governor and urge them to mandate mask-wearing in their states,” he said. “If they refuse I’ll go to the mayors and county executives and get local masking requirements in place nationwide.”

Biden added that his administration would “mandate mask-wearing in all federal buildings and all interstate transportation” since “masks” have been proven to “save lives.”

“Wearing a mask is not a political statement. It’s a scientific imperative. It’s a point of patriotic pride, so we can pull our country out of this god awful spiral we’re in,” he said.

The former vice president’s comments come as his campaign has been forced to walk a tight rope on national mask mandates. Initially, over the summer, Biden repeatedly called for the federal government to institute a nationwide order requiring every citizen to don a mask when in public.

As public attitudes towards the novel coronavirus became normalized, however, public opinion not only began to turn against the issue, but questions arose over the constitutionality of such a measure. In September, Biden backed away from the issue slightly, telling a local-CBS affiliate such a mandate was likely to extend beyond the constraints of presidential authority.

“There’s a constitutional issue whether the federal government can issue such a mandate,” the former vice president said, adding he was unlikely to take such a step because of that reason if elected. “I don’t think constitutionally they could, so I wouldn’t issue a mandate.”

Since then, Biden has attempted to balance the issue, as evidenced on Friday when the former vice president pledged to impose mask requirements on federal property, while simultaneously pushing for states and local governments to implement their own mandates.

Canadian Government to Allot $163Mln for Domestic Vaccine Development

The Canadian government will allot $162.8 million for the development of domestic vaccines, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Friday.

"Today, I can announce that we are investing C$214 million [US$162.8 million] for made-in-Canada vaccines," Trudeau said.

Up to $131.7 million will reportedly go toward advancing Quebec City-based Medicago’s vaccine candidate and to build a vaccine production facility, Trudeau said.

In addition, the government will provide $31.5 million to Vancouver-based Precision NanoSystems Incorporated and the National Research Council of Canada to advance vaccine candidates in different stages of clinical trials.

The development comes following September plans, announced by Trudeau, to procure 20 million doses of a coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine from British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca.

The push for a vaccine comes amid increasing numbers of novel coronavirus infections in the country and in the world. Trudeau stated that on Thursday, Canada’s public health agency recorded the highest number of infections since the onset of the pandemic in March.
