President Trump refused to denounce QAnon during a town hall event Thursday and once again claimed ignorance of the far-right conspiracy theory movement recently condemned by other Republicans.

Facing questions from Savannah Guthrie, the town hall moderator and anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, Mr. Trump insisted he still knows little to nothing about QAnon and declined multiple opportunities to reject it.

Mr. Trump also pushed back repeatedly when told of specific beliefs held by proponents of QAnon, accused Ms. Guthrie of misunderstanding the movement and took issue with her asking him about it.

Romney slams Trump for refusing to denounce QAnon on national television

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Friday slammed President Trump for refusing to denounce QAnon, a group that has spread false information on social media about COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement and which the FBI warns is a domestic terror threat.

“The president’s unwillingness to denounce an absurd and dangerous conspiracy theory last night continues an alarming pattern: politicians and parties refuse to forcefully and convincingly repudiate groups like antifa, white supremacists and conspiracy peddlers,” Romney said in a statement tweeted Friday afternoon.

“Similarly troubling is their silence regarding anti-vaxxers, militias and anarchists,” he added. “Rather than expel the rabid fringes and the extremes, they have coddled or adopted them, eagerly trading their principles for the hope of electoral victories.”

More than 1 in 50 tweets about voting in the 2020 elections in August and September were posted by QAnon accounts, according to research released Friday by Advance Democracy, a nonpartisan nonprofit.

The research also found that 2 in every 25 tweets using the hashtag #voterfraud originated from QAnon accounts, a sign of how ubiquitous the conspiracy theory has become on Twitter, one of the last remaining major social media platforms to allow QAnon content.

While still a small percentage of the broader discussion, the data shows how the QAnon movement has succeeded in becoming an outsize influence on election discourse. Researchers have warned that Trump-friendly social media networks and far-right media are poised to amplify any of the president's claims about the election.

Arguably the biggest sensation to come out of the debacle of a town hall NBC had with President Trump was the so-called “nodding lady.” Positioned directly behind the President’s left shoulder for one of the most widely used camera angles, she was applauded by some and attacked by others for nodding her head and displaying thumbs up in agreement when the President answered many of the attack questions posed to him by Savannah Guthrie.

But she wasn’t originally positioned there. Before the town hall began, a Caucasian lady was originally positioned there. NBC found Mayra Joli and put her in that prominent spot instead. Now, it would not be a stretch based on their clear bias against the President that they wanted to put someone in the spot very visible to the camera who would be against him. But they didn’t ask Joli, moving her solely based on her appearance. Joli is Black.
