Nearly 400,000 California Ballots Sent To People Who Moved Out Of State Or Died

Millions of California ballots have been delivered to residents across the state as early voting begins for the 2020 general election, but some have gone to people who should no longer be registered to vote in the state.

A new study from the Election Integrity Project California has found that close to 400,000 ballots have been sent to people who moved or died.

“The fear is that people who are dishonest could vote those ballots and attempt to get them counted,” said Evelyn Swenson, who works with the organization. “What kind of confidence to the people of California have in the system when they’re getting ballots from their deceased loved one 10 years ago or someone who never lived there or someone who moved 10 years ago? That hurts the confidence in the election.”

CBS2 investigative reporter David Goldstein connected with several people who said that they received ballots for people who haven’t lived at their addresses for decades.

One ballot sent to Margaret Richards in Sherman Oaks, but moved to Tennessee 16 years ago. Richards said the fact that these ballots are being sent out worries her and makes her question the integrity of the election.

“It just is very unfortunate,” she said. “Think about how many people who have moved, and the same thing is happening over and over. How do you trust the system?”

Richards isn’t the only one. Monrovia resident Pam Harnden said she received ballots for the people who sold her her home 15 years ago. They now live in Texas.

“Whenever there’s an election of some sort, I get all the paperwork,” she said. “It’s really a shame because it’s, what, going on 15 years and they haven’t taken these people off the voter rolls?”

The L.A. County Registrar said that “a voter record is made inactive only when mail sent to the voter is returned undeliverable from the post office or through notification of a change of address. If you get a ballot in the mail not addressed to you, mark it return to sender. Voter no longer lives there.”

Harnden said she has done that every year, and she still receives them.

“Like a bad penny,” she said.

To protect the integrity of ballots, the registrar’s office said they are subject to signature verification and are checked statewide to see if someone may have voted twice. However, if someone voted in another state, it is more difficult to find out.

Trump Administration Denies California Request for Wildfire Disaster Aid

The Trump administration’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied California Governor Gavin Newsom’s request for disaster relief after fires have consumed more than a million acres in the state.

FEMA offered no comment for the decision. The state is expected to appeal.

The wildfires are the worst in the state’s history, as property damage is expected to exceed the $250 million estimates made last month. Some of the fires are still burning.

A major disaster declaration allows for cost-sharing for damage, cleanup and rebuilding between the state and federal government. It also activates federal programs led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

California did not ask for a specific dollar amount because damage estimates are not complete, Ferguson said.

“The true cost won’t be known for months or years afterward,” he said.

He added: “What the state is looking for is the highest level of federal support, which requires the highest bars be cleared. But we feel our case for those requirements has been met.”

Thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed, many of them uninsured.

Newsom also said funds would go toward helping rebuild public infrastructure, miles of roads, parks, signs and fire shelters.

“Many of the counties impacted by these wildfires are still recovering from previous devastating wildfires, storms and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Newsom wrote.

He added, “Californians are exhausted.”

The state is expected to run a staggering $54 billion budget deficit largely due to the pandemic. The twin hits of the coronavirus and the massive wildfires mean the state is probably going to get some money from Washington. How much will be up to Trump.

Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the state’s political establishment. The mayors of Los Angeles and San Francisco have personally criticized the president, and Governor Newsom has defied Washington on several occasions.

But is that any reason to take out your frustrations on ordinary people?

Donald Trump will lose the state of California in a landslide on November 3. It is a very liberal Democratic state that opposes his policies on everything from immigration to environmental issues.

But there are millions of Republicans in the state who would also be hurt if the feds deny California the disaster relief funds. What would be the point of that?

In fact, it’s petty and small of the president to carry on a personal vendetta against California to the point that innocent people are hurt. Using the power of the federal government to exact revenge on his political enemies may make him and his supporters feel good, but it’s not the American way and never has been.

Billionaire Robert Smith is likely best known for his charitable stunts, such as vowing to pay off the debts of Morehouse College’s entire graduating class last year.

That clean image may run into trouble due to a recent agreement with the IRS showing that Smith lied for years to avoid paying taxes. Smith reportedly used false statements, forged paper trails, and also used a network of offshore accounts.

He will only avoid prosecution due to compliance with a larger tax avoidance investigation into Robert Brockman, recently accused of the largest tax avoidance case against an individual in U.S. history. Smith will also pay $139 million in back taxes, fees, and interest. He agreed to drop $182 million in tax refund claims due to purported charitable contributions, as well.

Federal officials announced the agreement Thursday, saying that Smith had been under investigation for over four years. Smith admitted to them that he had used millions in untaxed funds to buy and renovate real estate properties. He spent $2.5 million on a California vacation home in 2005, using untaxed income stored in the British Virgin Islands and the Swiss Banque Bonhote.

Five years later, Smith moved to Switzerland, using the money in his Swiss account to buy two ski properties and a commercial estate. He eventually moved back to the U.S., living now in Austin, Texas.

He took more than $13 million back with him. He states that he used the money “to build a home and make improvements to property that he owned in Colorado and to fund charitable activities on that property for inner-city children and wounded veterans.”

Ice Cube says CNN canceled his interview because they 'can't handle the truth'

Ice Cube blasted CNN for canceling his scheduled appearance on the network, saying, "They can't handle the truth."

The rapper, whose real name is O'Shea Jackson, was set to appear with host Chris Cuomo, but the network backed out after he acknowledged that he’s advising President Trump’s administration on a plan for black Americans.

“So the POWERS that be cancelled my interview on @CuomoPrimeTime tonight,” Jackson wrote Thursday night on Twitter. “I’ve actually been (banned) from @CNN for a few months so I was surprised they even asked. But it seems like they can’t handle the truth.”

Jackson has been helping Trump on his multifaceted Platinum Plan to improve economic prosperity for black Americans. The plan includes a pledge for 3 million new jobs for the black community, creating 500,000 new, black-owned businesses and increasing access to capital in black communities by nearly $500 billion. The plan also calls for better policing and access to education and job opportunities in the community.

The hip hop star said he offered to meet with both presidential campaigns, but Joe Biden’s campaign said they would address the plan “after the election.”

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign on Tuesday praised Jackson's help.

"Shoutout to @icecube for his willingness to step up and work with @realDonaldTrump Administration to help develop the #PlatinumPlan," senior campaign adviser Katrina Pierson tweeted Tuesday. "Leaders gonna lead, haters gonna hate. Thank you for leading!"

But that doesn't mean the 51-year-old is backing the president. In fact, he once said he would “never endorse a motherf* like Donald Trump." But he also said he would help “anybody on the planet who has the power to help black Americans close the enormous wealth gap.”

Jackson also pushed back on the notion that he is being used by Trump.

"Every side is the Darkside for us here in America. They’re all the same until something changes for us. They all lie and they all cheat but we can’t afford not to negotiate with whoever is in power or our condition in this country will never change. Our justice is bipartisan," he tweeted.

"Black progress is a bipartisan issue. When we created the Contract With Black America we excepted to talk to both sides of the isle. Talking truth to power is part of the process," he also wrote.

Republicans often get little support from black voters when running for the White House.

George W. Bush got 9% of the vote in 2000, then made a heavy outreach and soared in 2004 – to 11%. In 2012, Mitt Romney pledged to help the black community more than had President Barack Obama (who got 95% of the 2008 vote). Romney ended up with 8% of the that vote, the same percentage Trump got in 2016.

Federal Court Rebukes D.C. Mayor's Double Standard on Church Services and BLM Protests

Last week, the District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that Capitol Hill Baptist Church (CHBC) can resume outdoor services despite Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser’s coronavirus restrictions. In his ruling, Judge Trevor McFadden implicitly rebuked Bowser for encouraging one type of gathering — Black Lives Matter protests — while cracking down on religious gatherings.

“No matter how the protests were organized and planned, the District’s (and in particular, Mayor Bowser’s) support for at least some mass gatherings undermines its contention that it has a compelling interest in capping the number of attendees at the Church’s outdoor services,” McFadden wrote.

Bowser’s COVID-19 restrictions prohibit church services with more than 100 people (originally they only allowed services with 10 people or fewer).CHBC, an 853-member church in D.C., requested permission to meet at the 45,000-plus-seat Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, which would give them ample room to social distance, but the city refused the church’s request. On September 22, CHBC filed a lawsuit and requested a temporary restraining order preventing Bowser from penalizing them for gathering.

CHBC cited the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which requires the government to meet strict scrutiny when abridging religious liberty. This means the government must prove that it has a compelling state interest and that its restrictions are the “least restrictive means” of meeting that interest.

The judge ruled that CHBC is likely to prevail in its lawsuit since Bowser’s double standard on the protests undercuts her claim to have a compelling state interest to prevent gatherings to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Consider the District’s response to mass protests over the past year, which included thousands of citizens marching through the streets of the city, including along streets that the District closed specifically for that purpose,” McFadden noted. “And the Mayor appeared at one of the mass gatherings, ‘welcom[ing]’ hundreds if not thousands of protestors tightly packed into Black Lives Matter Plaza and announcing that it was ‘so wonderful to see everybody peacefully protesting, wearing [their] mask[s].'”

The judge also noted that Bowser “christened ‘Black Lives Matter Plaza’ when ‘she directed the D.C. Department of Public Works to create a mural on 16th Street N.W., near the White House, to ‘honor the peaceful protesters from June 1, 2020 and send a message that District streets are a safe space for peaceful protestors.””

Indeed, Bowser directed staff to paint “Black Lives Matter” on the road across from the White House in an act of state-sanctioned graffiti.

“The Mayor’s apparent encouragement of these protests also implies that the District favors some gatherings (protests) over others (religious services),” McFadden argued. “When faced with similar facts in a First Amendment challenge, another court explained that high-profile government officials encouraging and participating in protests ‘sent a clear message that mass protests are deserving of preferential treatment,'” the judge added, citing Soos v. Cuomo (2020).

In that case, the court noted that Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio “could have ‘been silent’ or ‘could have just as easily discouraged protests, short of condemning their message, in the name of public health,'” but they did not take either of these courses.

Now entering the third week of second American Civil War approximately 72% of farmers have formed a cooperative. Local liberals claim this is the third incident from this mechanic in six months. The FBI is seeking involvement, but is currently blocked by state officials.

A Pheonix man shot his hairdresser after she apparently provided an intentionally sub-par haircut. The man is currently being jailed while a full investigation is undertaken. Pheonix is battleground territory and it is likely he will be charged with attempted murder. It was reported he left the salon unaware of the severity of his haircut, only to return later firing six rounds into the front window of the salon. The hairdresser was struck once in the abdomen and is currently in stable condition. She is expected to fully revocer.

Small arms could be heard emanating from the inner city in chicago this week. Large scale gang wars are peaking in participation. The war between the Blood and Crip has been articulated by multiple small-scale, small-arms gun battles. However, in recent weeks, defensive positions have been taken up by the Blood. The Crip have formed an alliance with Hispanic gang organizations to push further into Blood territory. The area has been largely evacuated and is primarily inhabited by warring youth.

A small contingent of Silent Majority fighters attacked the compound established at UCLA. The liberals holed up at the UCLA compound hurled firebombs and both sides fired AR-15's across the battlefield. No casualities were noted and the gunfight ended after ten minutes following a life threatening injurity to a Silent Majority fighter. The fighter is now expected to survive. The UCLA compound released the live stream video with a written statement reading, "Abolish the Silent Majority, Long Live the Liberal."

Small groups of urban fighters burned several cornfields in Western Nebraska. Four youth, aged 17-24, were apprehended by local officials while attempting to flee the county. The corn was not able to saved, but a containment barrier was established. Small groups commiting arson have plagued farming communities over the last week and increased police protection is being installed in rural communities across the country.

A famous New York eatery was caught on hidden camera spitting in the food of alleged Silent Nation sympathizers. A small spy cam was installed in the restaurant's salad preparation station where employees could be seen in groups spitting onto the food. The chef would then toss the salad with the saliva of the staff. Governor Cuomo laughed off the incident, calling it inconsequential in the times. Cuomo noted in a statement, "food supplies are running short, home/auto repairs are piling up, trash is not getting collected, and power lines are not being repaired, this is not a time for games." It is expected that no consequences will result from the employees' actions.

Canadian TV Network Sued After ‘Falsely Accusing’ Independent News Site Of Being Part Of Russian Cyber Operation

Consortium News, which frequently covers WikiLeaks and various whistleblower stories, has sued Global News for “falsely accusing” the media organization of “being part of a cyber-influence campaign directed by Russia.”

As the lawsuit [PDF] filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia indicates, on December 10, 2019, Global News allegedly spread “false, unfair, and inaccurate statements” that held Consortium News “up to scorn, ridicule, and contempt in the industry.”

The statements suggested Consortium News was responsible for “grossly unethical behavior, dishonesty, lack of integrity, conspiracy,” and the organization was unfit to publish in the news media.

During January, libel notices were sent to Global News and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE). The notices demanded a retraction of any mention of Consortium News as well as an apology.

Consortium News editor-in-chief Joe Lauria said at the time, “We’ve been targeted before, but never in this most overt way by a named powerful Five Eyes intelligence agency and a major television station.”

Global News reported on “secret intelligence records” they obtained and claimed the files showed Russia as a “hostile foreign state” that targeted Canada with “cyber influence” campaigns.

One file from the CSE said “the first attack was a February 2017 report in the ‘online Consortium News’ followed ‘in quick succession’ by pro-Russian English language and Russian-language online media.”

In other words, the mere fact that certain Russian media organizations took an interest in a report by Consortium News was considered an indication that the independent outlet was “involved” in a campaign directed by a foreign power.

Consortium News Exposed A Powerful Elite’s ‘Dark Family Secret’

The file referred to a report Consortium News published on February 27, 2017, titled, “A Nazi Skeleton in the Family Closet,” about Chrystia Freeland, who is currently the finance minister in Canada.

According to the lawsuit, “The article revealed that Freeland lied about her grandfather’s past as an editor of a Nazi newspaper in occupied Poland during the Second World War. CN truthfully reported that Freeland concealed the dark family secret that her grandfather, Mykhailo Chomiak, faithfully served Nazi Germany right up to its surrender, and Chomiak’s family only moved to Canada after the Third Reich was defeated by the Soviet Union’s Red Army and its allies – the U.S. and Great Britain.”

“CN truthfully reported that Freeland’s grandfather was not a victim of the war. To the contrary, he was on the side of the German aggressors who collaborated with Ukrainian nationalists in killing Russians, Jews, Poles and other minorities. Coronavirus again hits Roosevelt carrier as sailors test positive two days after new deployment

Just two days after leaving San Diego to embark on its first deployment since a massive coronavirus outbreak swept through the ship, the Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier identified a “small number of sailors” testing positive for the virus, a Navy official told The Chronicle on Friday.

The sailors tested positive Thursday, about 48 hours after the nuclear warship left Naval Air Station North Island to conduct routine training at sea.

“The sailors self-reported after experiencing symptoms, received immediate medical treatment and were transported off the ship for isolation,” Cmdr. Zach Harrell, spokesman for the Naval Air Forces commander, said in a statement. “Contact tracing aboard the ship is complete. Theodore Roosevelt is aggressively applying all mitigation measures in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Navy guidance in order to protect the health of our sailors and stop the spread of the virus as we continue to identify and eliminate any of the virus’ potential vectors.”

It’s been a difficult week for the aircraft carrier trying to shake its COVID-19 stigma. On Tuesday, the day the ship left port, a 20-year-old Roosevelt sailor from Walnut Creek killed himself while standing security watch on a pier at the air station, Harrell said.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has launched an investigation into his death and has deployed support and counseling resources to “assist sailors of all ranks as they mourn their shipmate’s death,” Harrell said.

The warship returned to San Diego on July 9 after an ill-fated six-month deployment that led to a massive coronavirus outbreak infecting more than 1,250 of its crew. One sailor died from COVID-19 complications. The crew had spent about three months in the homeport.

During its challenging earlier deployment, the Roosevelt spent about a month in Guam trying to stem the outbreak, isolate sailors and sanitize the ship.

Last month, the ship had returned to open water to qualify pilots, standard procedure to hone skills to take off and land aircraft on an aircraft carrier. The ship’s top officers at the time said the previous outbreak had made the ship stronger.

“The ship just completed a maintenance period and the crew is ready to return to sea,” said Cmdr. Zachary Harry, Roosevelt’s chief engineering officer. “The improved material condition of the ship and the proficiency our sailors developed during last deployment is a recipe for continued success.”

“It is very gratifying to be able to return TR to sea,” said Capt. Eric Anduze, Roosevelt’s commanding officer. “Getting underway, seeing the professionalism of the crew firsthand and supporting the (air) squadrons during carrier qualifications is a great way to demonstrate once again what the TR team can do.”

Hertz Snags $1.65 Billion Financing Deal: Here’s What It Means For The Car Rental Company

After filing for bankruptcy in May, Hertz has been given a lifeline with $1.65 billion in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing.

The rental car company’s share price soared nearly 130% on Friday with news of the financing deal. Hertz has filed for approval of the DIP financing in a Delaware bankruptcy court, with a hearing slated for Oct. 29.

The financing will help Hertz move through the Chapter 11 process with up to $1 billion dedicated to equity for vehicle acquisition in the U.S. and Canada and up to $800 million for working capital and general corporate purposes.

The financing was provided by some of Hertz’s creditors and is subject to approval by the bankruptcy court, the company said.

Hertz found itself in Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the coronavirus bite down on the travel industry. As business and leisure travelers stopped traveling because of the pandemic, Hertz’s sales plummeted, causing the company to seek bankruptcy protection.

Hertz President and CEO Paul Stone said: “This new financing will provide additional financial flexibility as we continue to navigate the pandemic's effects on the travel industry and take steps to best position our business for the future. We are pleased with the strong interest from our pre-petition first-lien lenders and appreciate their support of Hertz and our future opportunities as a rental car leader.”

Shares of Hertz were trading at $2.3591 as of 1:22 p.m. EDT, up $1.3291 or $129.0388.

Newly obtained emails from a Hunter Biden business partner lay out in detail how the Vice President’s son and his colleagues used their access to the Obama-Biden administration to arrange private meetings for potential foreign clients and investors at the highest levels in the White House. These never-before-revealed emails outline how a delegation of Chinese investors and Communist Party officials managed to secure a private, off-the-books meeting with then-Vice President Joe Biden.

In a 2011 email, Hunter Biden’s business associates also discussed developing relations with what one called “China Inc.” as part of a “new push on soft diplomacy for the Chinese.” These emails are completely unconnected to the Hunter Biden emails being released by the New York Post.

These and more explosive never-before-revealed emails were provided to Schweizer by Bevan Cooney, a one-time Hunter Biden and Devon Archer business associate. Cooney is currently in prison serving a sentence for his involvement in a 2016 bond fraud investment scheme.

In 2019, Cooney reached out to Schweizer after becoming familiar with the revelations in his 2018 book Secret Empires. Cooney explained that he believes he was the “fall guy” for the fraud scheme and that Archer and Hunter Biden had avoided responsibility.

Archer, who was also convicted in the case, saw a federal judge vacate his conviction. But an appellate court overturned the lower court judge’s ruling, reinstating Archer’s conviction in the case. Archer, Hunter Biden’s longtime business partner, awaits sentencing.

Cooney, their associate who is currently serving a prison sentence on his conviction in the matter, later reestablished contact with Schweizer through investigative journalist Matthew Tyrmand. From prison, Cooney provided Schweizer with written authorization, his email account name, and password to his Gmail account to retrieve these emails. He authorized, in writing, the publication of these emails— notable because it is the first time a close associate has publicly confirmed Hunter’s trading on his father’s influence.

The emails offer a unique window into just how the Biden universe conducted business during the Obama-Biden Administration. These associates sought to trade on Hunter Biden’s relationship with, and access to, his father and the Obama-Biden White House in order to generate business.

For instance, on November 5, 2011, one of Archer’s business contacts forwarded him an email teasing an opportunity to gain “potentially outstanding new clients” by helping to arrange White House meetings for a group of Chinese executives and government officials. The group was the China Entrepreneur Club (CEC) and the delegation included Chinese billionaires, Chinese Communist Party loyalists, and at least one “respected diplomat” from Beijing. Despite its benign name, CEC has been called “a second foreign ministry” for the People’s Republic of China—a communist government that closely controls most businesses in its country. CEC was established in 2006 by a group of businessmen and Chinese government diplomats.

Facebook Maintains Low Profile After Censoring Bombshell Biden Story

Following Facebook and Twitter’s decision to censor a recent bombshell article from the New York Post about Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter, Facebook has remained mostly silent about the issue as Twitter has dominated the headlines with its link blocking, suspension of prominent media & politicians, and policy changes.

Breitbart News recently reported on the New York Post’s bombshell story that indicated that Joe Biden may have met with an adviser to the board of Burisma while he was Vice President, arranged by his son Hunter, who was working as a lobbyist for the company at the time. Joe Biden has previously said, “I have never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings.”

But, the leaked emails allegedly show that Hunter introduced his father to a Bursima executive less than a year before Biden, acting as Vice President, pressured the Ukrainian government into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company. Shortly after the story broke, many found themselves having trouble sharing it across social media. This censorship comes just weeks after executives from both Facebook and Twitter joined the Biden transition team.

Facebook and Twitter immediately went to work censoring the story across their platforms, in a tweet Andy Stone, who works for communications at Facebook and is a former Democrat staffer, stated that Facebook would be reducting the story’s distribution until third-party fact-checkers had verified the report, a level of scrutiny not often applied to news stories on Facebook:

Mark Levin: Joe Biden a Nasty Human Being Who Lied His Way to Power

Mark Levin described Joe Biden as “a very nasty human being,” while reflecting on the former vice president’s decades-long political career on Friday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow.

Levin, author of Unfreedom of the Press, and host of his eponymous radio show, BlazeTV’s LevinTV, and Fox News Channel’s Life, Liberty, and Levin, contrasted Biden’s character and record with those of President Donald Trump.

“Joe Biden has spent his long career in Washington, DC, coddling up to segregationists, doing the most awful things as a senator, trying to destroy the families and characters of men who’ve come up to serve this country, Robert Bork, Clarence Thomas, and others,” Levin said.

As senator, Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and led the Democrats’ campaign against Republican Supreme Court nominees.

“Joe Biden has been accused of rape by Tara Reade — rape — it’s what she’s accusing him of, and nobody cares. Meanwhile, anything that is said about the president results in some kind of a criminal investigation,” Levin added.

“Joe Biden is a very nasty human being. He always has been a very nasty human being. He has lied his way into power. He’s been a plagiarist. He has cheated on exams in law school. He has stolen words out of Robert Kennedy’s mouth. He is a man who is desperate to be President of the United States, and this is his third run,” Levin said.

A 1987 Associated Press report documented Biden’s lies about his academic record. According to the report, “Sen. Joe Biden claimed during a campaign appearance in New Hampshire last spring that he finished in the top half of his law school class, although records indicate he finished near the bottom.”

Biden also admitted to plagiarism in 1987. The Washington Post reported at the time, “An emotional Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D-Del.) yesterday acknowledged he had plagiarized in a paper he submitted while a first-year law student in 1965, but defended his integrity and vowed to remain a candidate for his party’s presidential nomination.”

Levin identified Trump’s non-political history as an asset relative to Biden’s near-lifelong involvement in politics. He described Trump’s Twitter communications as reflective of the president’s genuineness.

Japan expected to dump over 1 MILLION TONS of radioactive Fukushima water into Pacific, fishermen fear ‘catastrophic impact’

The Japanese government is planning to release more than one million tons of contaminated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean, angering fishermen, local media have reported.

Japan has debated what to do with the rapidly increasing store of radioactive wastewater for years, and now the decision to release it into the ocean could be confirmed by the end of the month.

Currently, Japan houses the water in more than 1,000 tanks, but with 170 additional tons of the radioactive by-product being produced every day, storage space is quickly running out.

It is estimated that all tanks will have reached maximum capacity by the summer of 2022 and Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said on Friday that the decision was one they could “not keep delaying,” Kyodo News reported.

The water is used to cool the Fukushima nuclear reactor core, which went into meltdown after the catastrophic 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck the plant.

The government previously considered building more tanks to house the additional water, or attempting to evaporate the water into the atmosphere, but an advisory panel recommended releasing it into the ocean as the most efficient solution. However, the release process is not expected to begin until 2022 and is likely to take 30 years to complete.

The prospect of an ocean release has reignited concerns among local fishermen who fear it could destroy their industry.

“We are terrified that if even one fish is found to have exceeded the [radiation] safety standards after the treated water is released, people’s trust in us will plummet,” Kyodo News quoted a local fisherman as saying.

Hiroshi Kishi, who heads a confederation of Japanese fishing cooperatives told officials last week that the release could have a “catastrophic impact” on the industry.

Fishing was completely halted following the 2011 disaster, and despite a recent recovery, fishermen in the region continue to face international trade restrictions. South Korea, which still bans all fish imports from the region, has described the proposal as a “grave threat.”

The initial meltdown in 2011 forced the evacuation of 150,000 people from within 20km of the plant as well as from outside areas that experienced high levels of fallout. The clean-up process is expected to take many more years to complete.

Azerbaijan Says Armenian Forces Launched Ballistic Missile At Nakhichevan Enclave (Photos)

Azerbaijan has officially accused Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh of launching a tactical ballistic missile at the Nakhichevan enclave.

Nakhichevan, formally known the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, is a 5,500 km2 landlocked region of Azerbaijan. The region lays between Armenia and Iran.

In a brief statement, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan claimed a tactical ballistic missile was launched on October 16 by Armenian forces from Gubadli in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The missile allegedly struck the area of Ordubad in Nakhchivan.

“We declare that no missile was fired in the direction of the Ordubad region of Nakhichevan,” Shushan Stepanyan, Press Secretary of the Armenian MoD, said “this is another lie of the Azerbaijani military-political leadership, which aims to expand the geography of the conflict.”

The supposed missile strike on Nakhchivan was likely a stray fire accident. Since the outbreak of the battle in Nagorno-Karabakh, dozens of projectiles and even drones landed in Iran’s territory by mistake.

Azerbaijan may be indeed planning to expand the geography of the ongoing conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh to cover the Armenian regions separating its territory from Nakhchivan.

Poll finds just 15% of Americans confident in US democracy, as partisan divisions only grow ahead of presidential vote

Less than one-sixth of US voters believe that American democracy is working “very well,” while most Americans seem to agree that their society is extremely divided about its core values, a new survey has shown.

Almost three quarters of registered voters believe the nation “is headed in the wrong direction,”says a poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, the latter being a self-described non-partisan research group at the University of Chicago. It’s based on interviews with 1,121 eligible voters from all the US states and the District of Columbia.

The absolute majority, or 85 percent, said that the American society is “greatly divided” over the most important values and just over one third expects things to get somewhat better in the coming years.

The poll also revealed a perceived sorry state of US democracy, with only 15 percent of the respondents saying it still worked “extremely or very well.” Another 36 percent said it still is keeping afloat while a total of 49 percent admitted it either does not look particularly good to them or is no good at all. Supporters of President Donald Trump appeared to be much more confident in US democracy than those of his Democratic opponent in the November 3 election, Joe Biden.

The partisan divide was also clearly showing in predictions of the future, with 76 percent of Trump supporters believing a Biden election victory would only worsen the existing divisions and 91 percent of Biden backers saying the same of a Trump win. Neither candidate is seen by the majority of respondents as capable of uniting the nation or strengthening its democratic principles.

A significant number of respondents were also concerned about potential violations at the upcoming elections. More than a half of Biden’s supporters are more or less confident that the vote count would be accurate. This figure, however, falls down to just 28 percent when it comes to Trump’s backers.

The pro-Biden respondents also appear to be more concerned over potential voter suppression, while those supporting Trump cite voter fraud and an ability of supposedly non-eligible people to vote as the major problem. A Pew Research poll held back in early 2020 showed that almost 60 percent of Americans were dissatisfied with the way US democracy was working at that time.
