Chinese Envoy Angered Over Australia Virus Probe Call

Australia betrayed China with calls for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus, a Beijing envoy said Wednesday, likening the moves to Brutus plotting against Julius Caesar.

Wang Xining, the Chinese embassy's deputy head of mission, made the remarks in a rare public address as he spoke of the "indignation, anger and frustration" felt by China at Australia's push for a global inquiry.

"It is approximately identical to Julius Caesar in his final days when he saw Brutus approaching him," Wang said.

The virus was first detected in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, and has gone on to kill more than 800,000 people around the world.

China insists the source of the virus remains unknown, a position Wang repeated on Wednesday.

But China reacted with fury when Australia led calls in April for the independent probe into the virus.

Beijing subsequently imposed tariffs on Australian goods and warned Chinese tourists and students against visiting the country, citing alleged racial harassment against Asians.

Expanding on Beijing's reaction, Wang said Australia had "singled out" China in its call for an inquiry and had not given any notice of its plans.

"All of a sudden, they (the world) heard this shocking news of a proposal coming from Australia, which is supposed to be a good friend of China," he said.

Two women accused of sex trafficking minors in Broward, Palm Beach counties

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Two women are now behind bars for their alleged involvement in sex trafficking of minors, the FBI announced.

Kiara Nunez, 21, in Hollywood, and Alexandra Ramirez, 19, in Coral Springs, were arrested by the Broward County Human Trafficking Task Force, which includes the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, Coral Springs Police Department, Miramar Police Department, the Broward County Office of the State Attorney and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.

Federal court documents allege the pair was sex trafficking two 15-year-old girls from October 2019 through January 2020. On Jan. 29, 2020, one of the victims was recovered during a human trafficking operation at a hotel in Fort Lauderdale. Authorities reached out to the other victim for the first time on Feb. 12, and she told authorities both girls were forced to have sex for money at an Airbnb in Lake Worth.

Sexually explicit photos were taken of the girls and posted on websites used to advertise for prostitution, according to court documents. One of the victims had been reported missing by her family around Jan. 18.

Nunez and Ramirez are currently in federal custody and facing two counts of sex trafficking a minor.

DOJ Requests COVID-19 Data From Four Democrat Governors who Issued Orders to Send Sick Patients to Nursing Homes

A recent study revealed 45% of all US coronavirus deaths occurred in nursing homes.

Only 0.6% of the US population lives in nursing homes but over 45% of the coronavirus deaths were in these centers.

On Wednesday the Department of Justice requested data from four Democrat governors on their orders to send sick COVID-19 patients to nursing homes.

The Hill reported:

The Justice Department (DOJ) on Wednesday requested data from four governors on their orders requiring nursing homes to admit coronavirus patients.

“Protecting the rights of some of society’s most vulnerable members, including elderly nursing home residents, is one of our country’s most important obligations,” Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Division Eric Dreiband said in a statement.

“We must ensure they are adequately cared for with dignity and respect and not unnecessarily put at risk.”

The department requested data from Govs. Andrew Cuomo (D) of New York, Phil Murphy (D) of New Jersey, Tom Wolf (D) of Pennsylvania and Gretchen Whitmer (D) of Michigan.

New York, which has more deaths from the virus than any other state and became coronavirus hotspot at the start of the pandemic, issued its order on March 25.

Greece Rescues 96 From Sinking Yacht Smuggling Illegal Migrants to Europe

ATHENS, Greece (AP) – Greece’s coast guard said Wednesday it was continuing a broad search and rescue operation after a yacht smuggling migrants partially sank in the eastern Aegean.

A total of 96 people were rescued from the sea 21 nautical miles (31 kilometers, 24 miles) west of the small island of Halki, near Rhodes, the coast guard said. As the total number of people who had been on board was not known, the search and rescue operation continued into Wednesday afternoon.

The coast guard described the effort as “one of the largest and most successful search and rescue operations to have taken place in the Aegean Sea,” noting that it took place mainly at night and that many of those rescued, including many children, had not been wearing life jackets.

Of those rescued, 72 were transported to Rhodes, five to the island of Karpathos and 19 were picked up from a cargo ship by the Turkish coast guard. Those taken to the Greek islands were being given coronavirus tests and were being housed in quarantine hotels.

Three of those rescued were arrested as suspected migrant smugglers, the coast guard said.

Authorities were alerted after a passenger on board the yacht made an emergency call late Tuesday.

They scrambled helicopters, naval and coast guard vessels, and several passing merchant ships also participated in the operation.

But Greece’s coast guard said its rescue efforts were hampered by the Turkish coast guard. The incident comes during a crisis in Greek-Turkish relations, with the two neighbors in an acrimonious dispute over maritime exploration rights in the eastern Mediterranean.

The coast guard said in a statement that two Turkish patrol vessels arrived in the search and rescue area during the overnight operation, after a “large number” of people had already been rescued.

The statement said the Turkish vessels did not notify the rescue operation coordinator about their presence and made no essential contribution to the effort. “Also, they were constantly calling on the nearby ships in the area to depart,” it said.

The Greek coast guard statement added that the Turkish patrol boats took 19 of the rescued migrants off a Maltese-flagged, Turkish-owned cargo ship that had picked them up, thereby hampering efforts to account for the number of rescued and determine whether there were people missing.

The Turkish coast guard issued its own statement Wednesday regarding a distress call 45 miles southwest of the Turkish coastal town of Datca. The statement said the coast guard sent three vessels to the area and rescued 18 migrants from a commercial ship, as well as one Turkish national who it said had been trying to leave Turkey. They were transferred to the Turkish port of Bodrum.

The Turkish coast guard statement did not mention the island of Halki or the Greek coast guard allegations, but the area it refers to suggests the incident described was the same one reported by Greece.

Thousands of people continue to make their way clandestinely to the Greek islands from the nearby Turkish coast, paying smugglers to ferry them in often unseaworthy, overcrowded inflatable dinghies or other vessels.

The Greek coast guard said smuggling gangs have recently begun using larger vessels, mainly sailboats and yachts, to ferry migrants from the Turkish coast directly to southern Italy. Such a route would mean the migrants would bypass Greece, where thousands languish in overcrowded camps instead of being able to head to their intended destination, usually more prosperous European countries further north.

At least 25 such incidents have occurred in the last three months, the coast guard said, adding that they had been handled by the Greek and the Italian coast guards.

“Turkish authorities have been repeatedly informed about this particular phenomenon, without any response,” it said.

Mexican Cartel Deploys Explosive Drones on Civilian Self-Defense Militia

In September 2019, residents of Tepalcatepec, Michoacán, once again took up arms as a self-defense militia to protect their city and families as they faced attacks from Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG). Since that time, war has raged.

Breitbart Texas recently obtained an intelligence report detailing how, in April 2020, the cartel used small airplanes to drop explosives on the civilian militias. Mexican authorities deployed aerial surveillance as a deterrent. The CJNG then transitioned to small drones able to fly undetected on conventional radar.

Recently, two drones were seized inside a CJNG armored vehicle located in Tepalcatepec. They were found abandoned after a failed attack. The drones were loaded with C-4 explosives and ball bearings capable of remote detonation.

The report also cites a Mexican Attorney General report of a previous seizure of three armed drones in Puebla, Guanajuato, where the CJNG planned to use their use on the Santa Rosa Del Lima Cartel.

Drones in cartel wars are nothing new. They first came to the battlefields by the Gulf Cartel first for surveillance tasks in 2013. More advanced capabilities later emerged with long-range flights and aftermarket optics. Today, all significant cartels are using some form of drones in defensive and offensive capabilities.

Drone use is referred to as third-dimension tactics. In this context, gunmen are learning a new craft as a precision weapon system.

More concerning are the cartels’ use of third-dimension tactics that go unnoticed by too many government agencies. Cartels have large budgets to cover the costs of drone technology advancements and have a proven track record of being early adopters of new battlefield tactics.

For years scientists have sought to create the ultimate cancer-screening test—one that can reliably detect a malignancy early, before tumor cells spread and when treatments are more effective. A new method reported today in Nature Communications brings researchers a step closer to that goal. By using a blood test, the international team was able to diagnose cancer long before symptoms appeared in nearly all the people it tested who went on to develop cancer.

“What we showed is: up to four years before these people walk into the hospital, there are already signatures in their blood that show they have cancer,” says Kun Zhang, a bioengineer at the University of California, San Diego, and a co-author of the study. “That’s never been done before.”

Past efforts to develop blood tests for cancer typically involved researchers collecting blood samples from people already diagnosed with the disease. They would then see if they could accurately detect malignant cells in those samples, usually by looking at genetic mutations, DNA methylation (chemical alterations to DNA) or specific blood proteins. “The best you can prove is whether your method is as good at detecting cancer as existing methods,” Zhang says. “You can never prove it’s better.”

In the coming days, the activities of ten additional NGOs whose activities have been deemed of interest to the authority will be reviewed.

15-year-old was ‘passed off’ to men in sex-trafficking case, Kentucky police say

A 15-year-old girl said she was passed off to multiple men in exchange for money, Kentucky police said.

Steven Hargrove, 40, of La Vergne, Tennessee, was involved with the girl for “some time,” according to Kentucky State Police.

The girl’s mother said she was following a vehicle her missing daughter was in Monday night in Daviess County, state police said. She told police the car stopped at a gas station, where an officer soon arrived, according to an arrest citation.

The trooper found Hargrove driving the 15-year-old girl and he was “removed from the vehicle” and arrested, state police said.

The girl told the trooper she met Hargrove in different locations around Owensboro, where he would use her for sex, a citation states. She was also “passed off” by Hargrove to other men in Kentucky and surrounding states, state police said.

In exchange for sex, the girl received money, pets and other items from Hargrove, a citation states. She initially lied about her age, but Hargrove continued the acts when he found out her real age, state police said.

Hargrove was also with the girl Sunday, the arrest citation states.

He was charged with promoting human trafficking of a victim under 18 years old and placed in the Daviess County Jail.

The extreme of the scenario would be an 18-year-old man with a 17-year-old girlfriend.

Wiener's bill, however, is not so straightforward. He argues all forms of sex should be treated equally under the law.

The Law Will Protect Exploitation of Minors

Moreover, while there is room for flexibility in a ruling in which a boy turns 18 while his girlfriend is still 17 and her father presses charges, the bill defines the age minimum at 14. Recognizing that minors cannot legally consent to sex, Wiener argues that if a minor age 14 to 17 voluntarily has sex with an adult who is less than 10 years older, the judge should decide based on the individual facts of the case whether the adult should be placed on the sex-offender registry. Data provided by Wiener's office states, "[A]t least 2,400 people on the [CA] sex-offender registry, and potentially hundreds more, have been convicted of non-vaginal sex with a minor age 14 or older."

Abstract

Early detection has the potential to reduce cancer mortality, but an effective screening test must demonstrate asymptomatic cancer detection years before conventional diagnosis in a longitudinal study. In the Taizhou Longitudinal Study (TZL), 123,115 healthy subjects provided plasma samples for long-term storage and were then monitored for cancer occurrence. Here we report the preliminary results of PanSeer, a noninvasive blood test based on circulating tumor DNA methylation, on TZL plasma samples from 605 asymptomatic individuals, 191 of whom were later diagnosed with stomach, esophageal, colorectal, lung or liver cancer within four years of blood draw. We also assay plasma samples from an additional 223 cancer patients, plus 200 primary tumor and normal tissues. We show that PanSeer detects five common types of cancer in 88% (95% CI: 80–93%) of post-diagnosis patients with a specificity of 96% (95% CI: 93–98%), We also demonstrate that PanSeer detects cancer in 95% (95% CI: 89–98%) of asymptomatic individuals who were later diagnosed, though future longitudinal studies are required to confirm this result. These results demonstrate that cancer can be non-invasively detected up to four years before current standard of care.

Introduction

Late stage cancers often lack an effective treatment option1,2. Survival rates increase significantly when cancer is identified at early stages, as the tumor can be surgically removed or treated with milder drug regimens3; average 5-year survival at early stage is 91%, while average 5-year survival at late stage is 26%4. Detection of tumors at the earliest possible stage is therefore of paramount importance for cancer treatment. Currently, a limited number of screening tests exist for a few cancer types, including colonoscopy5, prostate specific antigen6, mammography7, and cervical cytology8. However, the efficacy of some tests has been questioned9, and many patients do not follow medical guidelines for screening10. Most cancer types currently lack an effective non-invasive early screening option11. Importantly, a formal demonstration of early detection requires collecting samples years before conventional cancer diagnosis, which is only feasible with longitudinal tracking of a large number of healthy individuals and identifying the very small fraction who develop cancer over time (at the incidence rate of cancer in the general population).
