Barclays Faces Billion-Dollar Loss From Structured Note 'Paperwork Error'

Barclays shocked many market participants when it suspended, until further notice, any further sales from inventory and any further issuances of a number of ETNs (including VXX and OIL).

According to a press release at the time, the suspension was because "Barclays does not currently have sufficient issuance capacity to support further sales from inventory and any further issuances of the ETNs." At the time, details were scarce and opaque with Barclays expecting a loss of approximately $600 million from the 'error' which was called “basic”, “bizarre” and “embarrassing” by analysts at the time.

Now, according to a new filing today, we get considerably more color on what exactly prompted this 'paperwork error' and how high the losses have already reached.

What did Barclays do wrong? (it was fuggen greesy that is what they did wrong) In August 2019, the SEC declared effective the 2019 F-3 of Barclays Bank which sought to cover the offer and sale of up to $20.76 billion of securities (in maximum aggregate offering price) registered thereunder.

The Subject Securities offered and sold by Barclays Bank during the Relevant Period, which comprised structured notes (“Structured Notes”) and ETNs, exceeded the maximum aggregate amount that Barclays Bank could offer from the 2019 F-3 by approximately $16.37 billion. In addition, Barclays Bank also offered and sold during the Relevant Period Subject Securities in the amount of approximately $1.27 billion that were issued under the 2018 F-3 in excess of the capacity remaining thereunder.

As such, certain offers and sales of Subject Securities were not made in full compliance with the Securities Act, giving rise to rights of rescission for certain purchasers of such securities. The Issuer has therefore elected to make this Rescission Offer. Translation - Barclays sold more securities than they were allowed and are now paying the price.

As a reminder, a rescission offer is an offer to rescind a securities transaction in which a securities law violation occurred or may have occurred.

The rescission offer is simple-ish - Barclays will buy back the securities from the investors at the initial purchase price (plus some interest).

There are over 3,000 structured notes on the list that are being offered rescission and 11 ETNs. Given the market's massive swings over the past couple of years, this rescission decision has meant surging losses for Barclays and that a number of investors have been rescued from terrible trades.

For some investors, this is a massive windfall.

Bloomberg highlights one security - a $1.8 million note tied to Peleton - which trades at an indicate price of just 7.9c on the dollar (after PTON's share price collapse), but which Barclays will be forced to buy back at 102.06c on the dollar for those initial investors. That's an approximate 1200% gain for any investors who accept the rescission offer. Finally, as Bloomberg reports, net losses from the error so far have reached £751 million ($914 million), Barclays said in its second-quarter results last week. The bank delayed a billion-pound share buyback, suspended the sales and issuance of dozens of exchange-traded notes and halted market-making activities in its own debt securities due to the error.

NY Fed Q2 Report: Total Household Debt Surpasses $16 trillion

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Center for Microeconomic Data today issued its Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. The Report shows an increase in total household debt in the second quarter of 2022, increasing by $312 billion (2%) to $16.15 trillion. Balances now stand $2 trillion higher than at the end of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. The report is based on data from the New York Fed's nationally representative Consumer Credit Panel.

Mortgage balances rose by $207 billion in the second quarter of 2022 and stood at $11.39 trillion at the end of June. Credit card balances also increased by $46 billion. Although seasonal patterns typically include an increase in the second quarter,the 13% cumulative increase in credit card balances since Q2 2021 represents the largest in more than 20 years.Auto loan balances increased by a solid $33 billion in the second quarter, while student loan balances were roughly unchanged from the first quarter and stand at $1.59 trillion. Other balances–which includes retail cards and other consumer loans –increased by a robust $25 billion. In total, non-housing balances grew by $103 billion, the largest increase seen since 2016.

Mortgage originations slightly declined in the second quarter and stood at $758 billion. The volume of newly originated auto loans increased to $199 billion, continuing the high volumes seen in dollar terms since Q3 2020. Aggregate limits on credit card accounts increased by $100 billion and now stand at $4.22 trillion–the largest increase in more than ten years.

The financial market’s most knowledgeable inflation traders are expecting a string of roughly 8.8% annual headline U.S. consumer-price readings over the next three months, starting with the Aug. 10 release of July’s data.

While such readings would be below June’s 9.1% reading and support the theory that inflation may have peaked at an almost 41-year high, the expectations of inflation-derivatives traders still adds up to what could be a lot of bad news for the broader market. The reason boils down to the length of time that high U.S. inflation persists, which would upend the hopes of investors, traders and policy makers for a relatively quicker and meaningful slowdown in price gains. The string of 8.8% figures — broken down as 8.78% for July, 8.75% for August and 8.79% for September — already takes into account the recent decline in gas prices, along with a drop in commodities such as wheat W00, -3.28%, and would come while the Federal Reserve is in the midst of an aggressive rate-hike campaign. Hopes that inflation may have peaked in June may be obscuring the risk that a wage-price spiral could still develop and that price gains in other areas, like shelter, could accelerate or remain sticky, some say.

Fed’s James Bullard expresses confidence that the economy can achieve a ‘soft landing’

St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said Tuesday that he still thinks the economy can avoid a recession, even though he expects the central bank will need to keep hiking rates to control inflation.

“I think that inflation has come in hotter than what I would have expected during the second quarter,” the central bank official said during a speech in New York. “Now that that has happened, I think we’re going to have to go a little bit higher than what I said before.”

The fed funds rate, which is the central bank’s benchmark, likely will have to go to 3.75%-4% by the end of 2022, Bullard estimated. It currently sits at 2.25%-2.5% following four rate hikes this year. The rate sets the level banks charge each other for overnight lending but feeds through to many adjustable-rate consumer debt instruments.

Nevertheless, Bullard said the Fed’s credibility in its dedication to fight inflation will help it avoid tanking the economy.Bullard compared the Fed’s current situation to the problems central banks faced in the 1970s and early ’80s. Inflation is now running at the highest points since 1981.

He expressed confidence that the Fed today will not have to drag the economy into a recession the way then-Chairman Paul Volcker did in the early 1980s.

“Modern central banks have more credibility than their counterparts in the 1970s,” Bullard said during a speech in New York. “Because of this … the Fed and the [European Central Bank] may be able to disinflate in an orderly manner and achieve a relatively soft landing.”

Markets lately have been making the opposite bet, namely that a hawkish Fed will hike rates so much that an economy that already has endured consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth will fall into a recession. Government bond yields have been heading lower, and the spread between those yields has been compressing, generally a sign that investors are taking a dim view of future growth.

In fact, futures pricing indicates that the Fed will have to follow its rate increases this year with cuts as soon as the summer of 2023.

But Bullard argued that the ability for the Fed to steer the economy toward a soft landing rests largely on its credibility, specifically whether the financial markets and the public believe the Fed has the will to stop inflation. He differentiated that from the 1970s era when the Fed enacted rate hikes when faced with inflation but quickly backed off.

“That credibility didn’t exist in the earlier era,” he said. “We have a lot more credibility than we used to have.”

Here is a current look at Civil Air traffic in the Taiwan Straight (and not all flights just a handful to show that it is pretty much a normal day) two shuttle flight crossing with another heading to Magong Island-the only difference is that some airlines have chosen to go around Taiwan-Vietnam (Viet Jet), South Korea (Korean Airlines) while others are not-ANA Cargo 747 going through (Tokyo-Hong Kong), Starlux Airlines heading to Bangkok from Taipei-basically a few minor changes but this is not a big deal air traffic-wise

Treasury Slashes Auction Sizes Through October Despite QT, Plans Biggest Cuts To 20Y Bond

In a time when the Fed's QT is expected to soak up sloshing investor liquidity, while the end of Fed TSY buying (and phased out rolling of maturities) is meant to lead to a (gradual) increase in Treasury auction sizes, today's quarterly refunding announcement by the Treasury was counterintuitive, because instead of boosting the size of auctions across the curve for August and futures months, the Treasury reduced its quarterly sale of longer-term debt for a fourth straight time (in line with expectations) and laid out plans for cuts to a range of maturities in coming months, with the 20-year bond - which has long been "kinked" on the curve and paying a higher yield than even 30Y paper - singled out for the biggest trimming.

The Treasury Department said in a statement in Washington that it will sell $98 billion of long-term securities at its so-called quarterly refunding auctions next week -- down from May’s $103 billion. According to Bloomberg, this marks the longest string of declines in about eight years. The offering sizes are as follows:

*$42 billion of 3-year notes on Aug. 9, compared with $45 billion at the May refunding and $43 billion at the July auction

*$35 billion of 10-year notes on Aug. 10, compared with $36 billion last quarter

*$21 billion of 30-year bonds on Aug. 11, versus $22 billion in May

This issuance will raise $43.9 billion in new cash from private investors, which is a very modest number considering the trillions in excess liquidity floating around. Indeed, as Bloomberg also notes, the continued shrinkage in TSY auctions "rebuts the notion that the Fed’s QT is having an immediate impact in soaking up investor cash-- if SOMA redemptions were going to bite, they would result in higher issuance." Alas, that is not happening, since for now the Treasury has yet to decide whether and when it will need excess cash; meanwhile there are roughly $2.2 trillion in excess liquidity parked at the Fed's O/N Reverse Repo facility (Every single day) The most acute auction cuts came at the 20 year tenor: the Treasury anticipates cuts of $2 billion to both the new and reopened 20-year bond auction sizes starting in August. According to the Treasury, market participant feedback in the past quarter has indicated that slightly larger reductions to 20-year bond auction sizes relative to surrounding maturities would improve the structural supply and demand balance at the tenor, but also noted that it was important to ensure benchmark liquidity size and that any adjustments be made in the context of Treasury’s regular and predictable issuance framework.

The Treasury said that feedback from market participants showed that slightly larger cutbacks to the 20-year than for other securities “would improve the structural supply and demand balance” for that bond. But the department was also told “it was important to ensure benchmark liquidity size.”

Some dealers had predicted even bigger reductions for the 20-year bond, given demand that’s been so low as to contribute to that security yielding more than both 10-year and 30-year Treasuries. Needless to say, as shown below, the Treasury needs all the help it can get in normalizing the curve.

Mortgage applications increased 1.2 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending July 29, 2022.

The unadjusted Purchase Index increased 1 percent compared with the previous week and was 16 percent lower than the same week one year ago. “Mortgage rates declined last week following another announcement of tighter monetary policy from the Federal Reserve, with the likelihood of more rate hikes to come. Treasury yields dropped as a result, as investors continue to expect a weaker macroeconomic environment in the coming months. The 30-year fixed rate saw the largest weekly decline since 2020, falling 31 basis points to 5.43 percent,” said Joel Kan, MBA’s Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting. “The drop in rates led to increases in both refinance and purchase applications, but compared to a year ago, activity is still depressed. Lower mortgage rates, combined with signs of more inventory coming to the market, could lead to a rebound in purchase activity.”

The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages with conforming loan balances ($647,200 or less) decreased to 5.43 percent from 5.74 percent, with points increasing to 0.65 from 0.61 (including the origination fee) for 80 percent loan-to-value ratio (LTV) loans.

Cap#1 refinance index since 1990. With higher mortgage rates, the refinance index has declined sharply over the last several months. The refinance index is just above the lowest level since the year 2000.

Cap #2 shows the MBA mortgage purchase index According to the MBA, purchase activity is down 16% year-over-year unadjusted. The purchase index is now only 14% above the pandemic low.

Russia Orders New Sakhalin-2 Operator to Be Set Up in Far East

Russia’s government ordered the establishment of a new operator for the Sakhalin-2 gas project in the Far East region, according to a document published in the nation’s legal database.

The entity, called Sakhalinskaya Energija, is to be based in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the main city of the Sakhalin island, where the project is located, according to the order. Russia’s gas giant Gazprom PJSC will hold just over 50% in the company, in line with its ownership in the former operator Sakhalin Energy.

The order follows an earlier decree by President Vladimir Putin, which required transfer of the project operator from Bermuda to a new Russian entity amid risks to the country’s interests and economic security. Foreign shareholders in Sakhalin-2, which in addition to offshore gas fields includes Russia’s first liquefied-gas plant, have one month from the entity’s establishment to decide whether they want to take a holding in the new company.

So far, Russia’s commercial register has no information on Sakhalinskaya Energija. Shell Plc, with a 27.5% stake in the facility, announced it would exit the project after Russia invaded Ukraine. Its chief executive officer, Ben van Beurden, said the energy major is “entirely unlikely” to take a stake in the new Sakhalin entity.

Japanese trading houses Mitsubishi Corp. and Mitsui & Co own a combined 22.5% in Sakhalin-2. Japan, the biggest buyer of LNG from the plant that’s been operating since 2009, said it needs to study what contracts under the decree would look like, and discuss its response with Japanese stakeholders, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on July 1 after the project’s reshuffle was first announced.

Robinhood Markets Inc. said it faces a US Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into the brokerage’s compliance with a short-selling rule.

The SEC’s enforcement division requested information about Robinhood’s adherence to Regulation SHO and matters related to securities lending and fractional shares, the Menlo Park, California-based company said Wednesday in a filing.

The online brokerage, which slashed 23% of its workforce this week, has faced several regulatory actions in recent years.

On Tuesday, Robinhood’s cryptocurrency arm was fined $30 million by the New York State Department of Financial Services, which accused the firm of violating anti-money-laundering and cybersecurity rules. In 2020, the SEC fined Robinhood $65 million for misleading its customers about a key source of revenue, called payment for order flow. The firm didn’t admit or deny wrongdoing in that case.

The inversion of the Treasury yield curve deepened Wednesday as the market proved volatile once again, with yields surging on the back of increased confidence about the prospect of Federal Reserve hiking interest rates and then tumbling anew before the day was out.

The gap between 2-year and 10-year Treasury yields shifted to a fresh extreme, with the longer rate dropping to be as much as 38 basis below the longer benchmark. That level on the widely watched yield curve metric, seen by many as a potential harbinger of recession, hasn’t been seen since 2000. The benchmark 10-year rate climbed as much as 10 basis points to 2.85% during the US morning, while shorter-dated yields rose even more as traders briefly moved to price in the potential for a 75-basis-point Fed hike next month at around 1-in-2. By late in the US afternoon though, short-end yields were close to where they ended the prior day, while longer end rates were falling, with the 10-year ending around 2.70% (and all becasue of this operation-you don't need to accomplish it all-just get the ball rolling-and rolling they did-this habbens everyday and yet these 'professionals' simply ignore all this going on) The slide weighed on the greenback, with the Bloomberg dollar index down marginally for the day after being up close to 0.4% at one stage during the session. “Yields rose to levels that looked attractive and the buyers started with the back end and it feels like cash was being put to work in fixed income,” said George Goncalves, head of US macro strategy at MUFG. “There is no sense of a catalyst,(no..NONE whatsoever...DERP! just keep ignoring the almost to $50B a day sloshing around in these (bond) markets you are paid to ANALyze) but the fact the market can’t hold higher rates suggests there is some skepticism among investors that the Fed will not really deliver on its tough talk.” (they won't-we've already shown this as the expectations for Sept is still at 25bp so talk is cheap-and that is all they do)

A cavalcade of comments by Fed officials and stronger-than-expected data on the US services sector helped drive the earlier move up in yields, while US stocks also advanced for the day. (and as shown in the caps they produce a result and today's example is no different as you see $1.954B thrown at the 10 year -at it's high (yield-wise) and then the cascade down-while this is going on-cap #1)

The moves are just the latest in a long line of intraday reversals seen in the market recently. With uncertainty over growth, inflation and central bank policy having picked up, there has been an increase in daily moves of this scale over recent months and a concomitant pickup in various volatility measures. Yet even with the pullback late Wednesday, rates on key benchmarks remain above the levels they were at as recently as Monday, with much of the enormous surge in yields seen Tuesday still being maintained.

The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.99% as of August 4, according to data released by Freddie Mac on Thursday. That’s down 31 basis points from the previous week — one basis point is equal to one hundredth of a percentage point, or 1% of 1%.

Rates have dipped below 5% for the first time since April. The average rate on the 15-year fixed-rate mortgage fell 32 basis points over the past week to 4.26%. The 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage averaged 4.25%, down 4 basis points from the prior week. “Mortgage rates remained volatile due to the tug of war between inflationary pressures and a clear slowdown in economic growth,” Sam Khater, chief economist at Freddie Mac, said in a statement. In spite of the fact that real wages are going down, the cost of living is soaring, and new jobless claims are heading up at a rapid pace, and the savings rate has collapsed, what really matters to the White House, it seems, is the "technical definition" of recession.

Never mind the fact that the US economy has contracted for the past two quarters, according to the federal government's own numbers. Apparently, as long as the NBER has not yet issued its opinion on whether or not the US economy is in recession, the White House is going to double down on the assertion that the economy is in fine shape and people should really stop complaining. After all, as one White House spokesman put it, it's not like there's a famine or anything. So quiet down, rubes.

Although the White House seems to believe that things are pretty OK, the US's misery index suggests they're not. June's misery index (a composite of unemployment and CPI inflation) has risen to 12.5. That's the highest since September 2011 when the US economy was experiencing a time of very weak job growth and economic growth following the Great Recession. At the time, the yield curve almost inverted, and there were fears of a new recession. (it is actually at 12.66-cap #1) June's misery index is also above the index from the 2007-2009 recession when the index peaked at 11.4 percent. The index is also about equal to where it was in the run-up the 1990-91 recession: So while the NBER may not have yet opined on whether to apply the word "recession" to the current economy, the economy is clearly not in good shape. Call it a recession, or don't. While the White House may be trying to convince the voters that all is well, consumer sentiment suggests ordinary people aren't buying it. Moreover, if we're looking for an indication as to whether or not unemployment and inflation affect consumer sentiment, we need look no further than the fact the misery index tracks rather closely with consumer sentiment. If we invert the Michigan Consumer Sentiment trend and match it up with the misery index, we get this: Consumer sentiment has plummeted alongside the increasing misery index, and this has often been the case in recent decades. Of course, economists and White House spokesmen could always just come back and claim that consumer sentiment is "wrong" and that people don't understand how good things are. It's worth noting that politicians, central bankers, and economists have done exactly that during months preceding previous recession. Ben Bernanke, for example, repeatedly noted in 2008 that the Federal Reserve was not predicting recession at all—this was after the recession had already begun (according to the NBER.) Of course, as Bernanke was insisting "all is well," both consumer sentiment and the misery index were trending in recessionary directions.

Now we may be in a similar situation with Fed chair Jerome Powell talking up the economy's alleged strengths while consumer sentiment goes into a nosedive, and the misery index repeatedly rises.

Yet, the bad news continues to pile up. The Fed has long clung to the job openings data in the JOLTS report, claiming that the economy must be find because employment (a lagging indicator) suggests strength. Well, this morning's JOLTS report shows a clear downward turn from its upward thrust with job openings falling month-over-month by the most since the 2020 recession. Job openings have fallen 9.8 percent from the March peak.

But hey, at least there's no famine!

The misery index can be used as a gauge at how the economy is doing. Because of the components, this indicator tends to be at its highest when inflation or unemployment has increased. For example, one of the most notable time periods in regards to high inflation was the 1980s. The US misery index went as high as 21.98 in 1980.

Coinbase’s BlackRock Pact Reinforces Crypto Status, Burns Shorts

The crypto winter that has dogged Coinbase Global Inc. for nearly nine months might finally be showing signs of thawing.

Shares of the largest US cryptocurrency exchange surged as much as 44% on Thursday, the most intraday since its 2021 direct listing, after announcing a partnership with BlackRock Inc. to help institutional investors manage and trade Bitcoin. The rally puts the stock on track for a third straight day of gains and sets it up for a record weekly rally.

For Coinbase investors, the news is a much-needed signal that its status as a giant in the crypto sector remains rock solid. To be sure, shares are still deeply in the red this year, down more than 60%.

“After this validation, it is possible that Coinbase will be able to partner with more traditional financial industries,” said Owen Lau, an analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. “It shows that even with the size of BlackRock, they are going to partner with a crypto-native company, rather than building their own capabilities.” The sudden surge added $6 billion in value to the company’s market capitalization, bringing it back above $20 billion for the first time since mid-May. While that’s more than double the size of rival Robinhood Markets Inc., it’s a far cry from the peak valuation near $75 billion from Novmeber, when Bitcoin was trading at a record high.

The company has faced a wave of headwinds in recent months as its trading volumes dwindled amid a plunge in the price of Bitcoin and other digital tokens. It’s also facing a probe from the US Securities and Exchange Commission into whether it improperly lets US customers trade assets that should have been registered as securities.

Short sellers, meanwhile, are taking a beating as the stock extends its sharp rebound from July. While shorts are still up more than $800 million this year in mark-to-market profits, those returns are 40% lower than they were prior to Thursday’s jump, according to S3 Partners’ managing director of predictive analytics Ihor Dusaniwsky. “We expect continued short covering in Coinbase as BlackRock’s announced partnership puts a python-like squeeze on short sellers,” he said.

Shares sank more than 21% on July 26 after funds controlled by Cathie Wood sold roughly $1.4 million of stock in the company holdings, worth about $75 million at the time.

Thursday’s move is also notable because it comes on a day when prices of Bitcoin, Ether and other popular digital assets are all lower. The stock has maintained a tight correlation to the world’s largest cryptocurrency since it began trading last year.

Other cryptocurrency-related stocks were also higher following the BlackRock deal, with firms including Marathon Digital, Riot Blockchain and Silvergate Capital all rising at least 5%.

Coinbase ex-manager pleads not guilty to insider trading charges

A former Coinbase Global Inc product manager and his brother pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to wire fraud charges in what U.S. prosecutors called the first insider trading case involving cryptocurrency.

Ishan Wahi, 32, the former product manager, was arrested last month in Seattle on charges he shared confidential information with his brother Nikhil and their friend Sameer Ramani about forthcoming announcements of new digital assets that Coinbase would allow users to trade.

Nikhil Wahi also pleaded not guilty during an arraignment on Wednesday in Manhattan federal court before U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska. Ramani, who was also charged, is at large.

Prosecutors said Nikhil Wahi and Ramani used ethereum blockchain wallets to acquire the assets and traded at least 14 times before Coinbase announcements in June 2021 and April 2022. The announcements typically caused the assets to rise in value and generated at least $1.5 million in illicit gains, prosecutors said.

Coinbase is one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

David Miller, a lawyer for Ishan Wahi, said the charges should be dismissed because insider trading needs to involve securities or commodities and this case did not.

Miller also said Coinbase tested new tokens before it publicly listed them, meaning the information his client was accused of sharing was not confidential.

Noah Solowiejczyk, a prosecutor, countered that the information was nonpublic and the prosecution was consistent with previous wire fraud cases.

U.S. regulators are weighing how to oversee cryptocurrency trading.

Coinbase did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Last month, the company said it had shared with prosecutors its findings from an internal probe into the trading.

Bail for the Wahi brothers was set at $1 million each. Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 22. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has filed related civil charges against them.

BlackRock to Shutter Russia ETF That Once Held $800 Million

BlackRock Inc. will begin a long process of shuttering a major Russia exchange-traded fund, after the protracted Ukraine war has slashed the value of securities linked to the region and left their fate in limbo. The iShares MSCI Russia ETF (ticker ERUS) will begin closing on Aug. 17 and proceeds from the few assets that can be liquidated will be distributed to shareholders, BlackRock announced in a press release on Wednesday. Most of the fund’s holdings currently can’t be sold due to sanctions or trading halts, so BlackRock expects the entire liquidation of the fund to take “an extended period of time.” ERUS is the first major Russia-focused ETF in the US to liquidate. The fund once held over $800 million at the peak of its assets in 2018, but the value of its holdings tumbled to effectively nothing in the wake of the Ukraine invasion. Russia-focused ETFs based in Europe, including two offered by BlackRock, had already started closing earlier this year. ERUS primarily holds Russia ordinary shares, which the Russian government has barred foreigners from selling, as well as depository receipts that are currently halted on US and UK exchanges. The few holdings that can be dispersed to shareholders are cash that the fund holds and proceeds from a money-market fund.

The money manager expects ERUS to exist until at least Dec. 31, 2023, so it can sell its remaining holdings. After that date, if the fund can’t liquidate all its assets, BlackRock can terminate the fund at any time and shareholders would have no guarantee of receiving proceeds related to Russian securities and depositary receipts. “It seems like a very fair way to wind down the fund,” said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. “They’ll distribute what they can now and leave open the opportunity that sometime in the next year and a half, if there’s an opportunity for them to actually realize some value from their holdings, they’ll pass those along.” The financial fallout from the Ukraine war has created a massive headache for ETF issuers. Russia-focused ETFs stopped trading shortly after the war started on Feb. 24, a first for the industry whose products had continued to trade in previous geopolitical crises. While some issuers have implemented voluntary waivers of fund-management fees they charge investors, issuers are still bleeding costs from maintaining the funds, which include paying banks fees to handle Russian depositary receipts.

The situation has also created havoc for many ETF investors, with some options traders unable to cash out and short sellers paying borrowing fees indefinitely.

In a surprising twist in the ongoing saga of Arizona’s primary election drama, Pinal County’s elections director no longer holds his post amid allegations of Election Day ballot shortages.

According to Pinal County’s official Twitter account, Elections Director David Frisk “is no longer in the position of Elections Director and is no longer employed by Pinal County. Virginia Ross is the County’s new Elections Director, having resigned her role as County Recorder this morning.”

Additionally, a press release from Pinal County addressed the “recent issues” with the primary election. “In light of the recent issues with Pinal County’s Primary Elections,” the statement reads, “the County can announce changes in the leadership of the Elections department.”

According to a report from 12News, Pinal County allegedly ran out of ballots on Tuesday, due to “unprecedented” demand from voters who were asking for in-person ballots.

Further, Jeffrey McClure, the chairman of the Board of Supervisors in Pinal County, stated, “As a Board, we are deeply embarrassed and frustrated by the mistakes that have been made in this primary election, and as such, we are taking immediate steps to ensure the November election runs smoothly, as elections in Pinal County have historically done prior to this primary.”

Charlie Kirk, Turning Point USA founder, previously lambasted the former elections director for conducting a “banana republic level election.” He added, “David Frisk and Pinal Co. leadership must be held accountable.”

Kari Lake, the presumptive nominee of the GOP gubernatorial primary election, cited the leadership shift at Pinal County on Twitter, as well. “If your right to vote was literally taken away, is this person’s resignation enough to remedy that?” she wrote.

She added, “How much bigger would our win be if all these people were allowed to vote?”

The change in Pinal County’s elections oversight comes just two days after RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and Arizona GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward called on Frisk to resign due to the ballot shortage and other issues.

Elon Musk, chief executive officer of Tesla Inc. and the world’s richest person, said he sees signs that the global economy has gone “past peak inflation.” Speaking at the electric-vehicle maker’s annual shareholder meeting, Musk said the company’s commodity and component costs are trending downward over the next six months. He also reiterated prior comments that he expects a mild recession to hit that could last 18 months. “The trend is down, which suggests we are past peak inflation,” Musk said at Tesla’s Austin headquarters and factory. “I think inflation is going to drop rapidly” at some point in the future, he said. Global central banks have embarked on a path of policy-tightening as inflation pressures consumers and corporate bottom lines. In the US, consumer prices increased by 9.1% in June from a year earlier, and Federal Reserve officials say the price gains have yet to slow. The next print on inflation comes Aug. 10. “We sort of have some insight in to where prices are headed over time,” Musk said, citing the company’s need to buy raw materials often months in advance of when they will be used. “The interesting thing that we are seeing now is that most of our commodities, most of the things that go in to a Tesla not all, but more than half the prices are trending down in six months,” he added. While Tesla has a global purview on input costs and consumer health, Musk warned on stage that making “macroeconomic prognostications is a recipe for disaster” and said his comments were a “guess” and “total speculation.” The CEO also warned that the trend could change.

Reservation holders and future customers of the upcoming futuristic Cybertruck may fall victim to the impacts of inflation, Musk suggested. The ‘Blade Runner’-inspired pickup was unveiled in 2019 and “a lot has changed” since then, he said. At the time the company started taking reservations, the most basic model was being discussed as a $39,900 vehicle.

“The specs and the pricing will be different,” Musk said. “I hate to give a little bit of bad news. But there is no way to have anticipated the inflation we have seen and various issues.”

The U.S. Federal Reserve faces renewed pressure to deliver another 75 basis point interest rate hike at its upcoming meeting in September as fresh data showed job gains unexpectedly accelerating and overall employment at a record high despite soaring inflation and rising borrowing costs.

The economy added 528,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said in its closely watched employment report on Friday, a far larger-than-expected number than expected. Data for June was revised higher to show 398,000 jobs created instead of the previously reported 372,000, while the unemployment rate fell to a pre-pandemic low of 3.5%. The strength of the labor market is a double-edged sword for Fed officials. They see it as an encouraging sign they can continue to raise rates to tame inflation without causing a sharp spike in the unemployment rate, but also a concerning one given the labor market will need to cool to help ease price pressures.

Friday's blowout number of job gains will likely on balance give policymakers further pause for thought on whether they are raising rates quickly enough to bring down inflation. An extremely tight jobs market has been fueling strong wage growth and Friday's report showed average hourly earnings rising more than expected, to 5.2% from one year previously.

Attention will now turn to next Wednesday's key Consumer Price Index inflation reading as the central bank plots its path. Whether the Fed will go ahead with a third straight 75-basis-point rate hike at its policy meeting next month - a pace unmatched in more than a generation - or dial back a bit is of central interest to investors, businesses and consumers who are increasingly fearful that the central bank's inflation fight may ultimately trigger a recession.

Tiger Cubs Stung by Market Rout Dumped Stocks, Then Missed Rally

When equities tumbled earlier this year, saddling some of the hedge fund industry’s most successful stock-pickers with crushing losses, they rushed to unload shares to halt the bleeding.

But that hasty retreat left Tiger Global Management, Coatue Management and D1 Capital Partners ill-positioned to capitalize on a powerful market reversal in July, when the S&P 500 logged its best month since November 2020. By then they had already jettisoned large chunks of their portfolios and increased short wagers on stocks they expected to fall.

Dan Sundheim’s D1 had a net exposure to equities of just 9.5% at the end of June, according to a person familiar with the matter. The firm’s stock book gained a comparatively modest 2.9% in July, helping the broader portfolio eke out a monthly gain of just 1.1%. The main hedge funds of Tiger Global and Coatue were little changed for the month, people said. Major stock market indexes, meanwhile, soared as corporate profits held up better than expected and investors speculated that the Federal Reserve’s aggressive moves to battle inflation dimmed the prospects for a deep recession. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index surged 12%.

D1’s low net exposure suggests it was almost evenly split between long and short bets -- and wrong-footed for a broad rally. As of May, Philippe Laffont’s Coatue had reduced net exposure of its hedge fund to 14% from about 60% a year earlier, according to an investor presentation. It was also sitting on more than 80% cash. It made the shift after underestimating the magnitude and speed of the stock selloff earlier in the year, the presentation shows. Chase Coleman’s Tiger told investors this week that it also misjudged the impact of rising global inflation and entered 2022 with too much exposure to stocks. The firm slashed its US equity holdings in the first quarter, selling out of 83 and trimming stakes in 46 more, while adding just two new positions, filings show. The value of its entire portfolio dropped about 40% in the first quarter, reflecting both divestitures and lower share prices.

July’s rally could well prove short-lived, making these firms’ repositioning look like a better wager in coming months. The S&P was still down 13% this year through Thursday. As of June, D1 managed roughly $22 billion, with about $15 billion in privates and $7 billion in stocks.

The paltry July returns followed a brutal stretch for the three money managers, leaving them deep in the red for the year. Tiger’s hedge fund tumbled 49.8% through the first seven months, compared with declines of 28% for D1 and 17% for Coatue. Tiger’s long-only fund plunged 62% in that span.

All the managers have connections to legendary stock-picker Julian Robertson and his Tiger Management. Coleman and Laffont both worked for Robertson before setting out on their own, and Sundheim previously worked for Andreas Halvorsen, also a Robertson protégé, before starting D1. Another Tiger Cub, Steve Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital, managed to capitalize on July’s upswing, posting a 7% gain for the month. That pared the fund’s decline for the year to 33%.

In its May investor presentation, Coatue said it had gone to cash for peace of mind, telling clients: “Our job now is to figure out when and how to start playing offense.”

US Consumer Borrowing Jumps by More Than $40 Billion, Second-Most Ever

US consumer borrowing surged in June, reflecting a jump in credit-card balances and a record increase in non-revolving lending that includes auto and school loans.

Total credit increased $40.2 billion from the prior month, second only to March’s $47.1 billion spike, Federal Reserve figures showed Friday. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a $27 billion advance. The figures aren’t adjusted for inflation. Revolving credit outstanding, which includes credit cards, increased $14.8 billion. Non-revolving credit increased $25.4 billion.

The June figures wrap up a quarter in which borrowing rose an annualized 8.7%. Motor vehicle loans at the end of the second quarter increased about $32 billion, while student loans was up less than $1 billion. With inflation at a 40-year high, Americans are having to spend more to buy the same goods and services as before. Consumers, however, have so far proved resilient, with outlays growing on an inflation-adjusted basis in June -- even if just slightly.

That’s certainly not true of all workers though. The rapid price gains have left others struggling to pay their bills. A Census Bureau survey conducted in late June and early July found four in 10 adults said it has been somewhat or very difficult to cover usual household expenses.

A federal judge in New York vacated the guilty plea of a former Deutsche Bank AG trader who admitted to conspiring with others to manipulate the Libor interest-rate benchmark, after an appeals court overturned the convictions of two of his ex-colleagues earlier this year. Timothy Parietti “must be viewed as innocent” in light of the January reversal, US District Judge Paul Engelmayer ruled Friday in Manhattan. He also vacated a judgment of conviction against Parietti and ordered the government to “promptly return” the $1 million fine he paid as part of his sentence. “We are grateful to the judge for overturning Mr. Parietti’s conviction, based on his finding that Mr. Parietti is innocent and allowing his conviction to stand would be a profound injustice,” said his lawyer, Larry Krantz. “Justice has now been done.” Parietti was a key witness in the 2018 trial of Matthew Connolly and Gavin Black, who were accused of conspiring to rig the London interbank offered rate for years. But the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals reversed their convictions, finding prosecutors failed to prove they had influenced the bank into making false or misleading submissions. The decision was a setback for the US government’s crackdown on alleged market manipulation. By then, Parietti had already completed his sentence of one day of time served and a period of supervised release. Parietti filed a petition to clear his 2016 guilty plea to conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud. Engelmayer said Parietti’s plea proceeding included claims by prosecutors that the government had enough evidence to back the charges -- a claim that turned out to be wrong.

“That representation was material to the court’s decision to accept Parietti’s guilty plea, as it likely was to Parietti’s decision to plead guilty,” the judge wrote. “With the circuit based on its close review of the trial proof now having exposed the government’s underlying proof as insufficient to prove that offense, Parietti must be viewed as innocent.” The Justice Department, which didn’t oppose Parietti’s motion, declined to comment. The on-site commander of the security team for former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was not aware a guard in charge of protecting Abe from behind had moved, National Police Agency officials said Friday. Abe was shot from behind during a campaign speech in Nara on July 8 and confirmed dead later in the day.

A guard made a decision to move another guard who was supposed to be protecting Abe from behind to a different place, but the commander was not notified of the change, the NPA officials said. The officials also said that the security team put excessive focus on dealing with the crowd in front of Abe and failed to pay attention to possible attacks from behind when drawing up security plans. The NPA believes that insufficient security plans and communication failures at the site allowed the 41-year-old suspected shooter, Tetsuya Yamagami, to approach Abe. The agency has been examining flaws in security for Abe. It plans to release this month the outcome of its investigation and issue new measures to prevent any recurrences.

When the shooting took place, there were about a dozen guards at the site, according to the NPA officials. Of them, four guards — one from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and three from the Nara Prefectural Police Department — were inside the space surrounded by guardrails where Abe gave his speech. There were no uniformed police officers in the space. Initially, a member of the prefectural police department was in charge of guarding Abe from behind. The guard, who was stationed on a roadway outside the space surrounded by guardrails, moved before the start of Abe’s speech to deal with the crowd on Abe’s right side, as ordered by another guard. The order was made after the size of the crowd to Abe’s right grew. This change in the security arrangement was not reported to the on-site commander over the radio. Therefore, the commander could not take measures, such as placing another guard to cover the area behind the former prime minister. The NPA also believes that the commander failed to give instructions properly.

Each of the four guards in the space was 2 to 5 meters away from Abe and could not move to protect Abe after the suspect fired the first of two shots. The NPA believes that the commander should have placed guards closer to Abe.

Berkshire Hathaway posts massive $43.8 billion loss; operating results improve

The slide in U.S. stock prices punished Berkshire Hathaway Inc's bottom line in the second quarter, as the conglomerate run by billionaire Warren Buffett on Saturday reported a $43.8 billion loss.

Berkshire nevertheless generated nearly $9.3 billion of operating profit, as gains from reinsurance and the BNSF railroad offset fresh losses at the Geico car insurer, where parts shortages and higher used vehicle prices boosted accident claims. Rising interest rates and dividend payouts helped insurance businesses generate more money from investments, while the strengthening U.S. dollar boosted profit from European and Japanese debt investments. Berkshire also slowed purchases of its stocks, including its own, though it still had $105.4 billion of cash it could deploy.

Investors closely watch Berkshire because of Buffett's reputation, and because results from the Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate's dozens of operating units often mirror broader economic trends.

Those units include steady earners such as its namesake energy company, several industrial companies, and familiar consumer brands such as Dairy Queen, Duracell, Fruit of the Loom and See's Candies. In its quarterly report, Berkshire said "significant disruptions of supply chains and higher costs have persisted" as new COVID-19 variants emerge and because of geopolitical conflicts including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But it said direct losses have not been material, despite higher costs for materials, shipping and labor.

Net results suffered from Berkshire's $53 billion of losses from investments and derivatives, including declines of more than 21% in three major holdings: Apple Inc (AAPL.O), Bank of America Corp and American Express Co (AXP.N).

Accounting rules require Berkshire to report the losses with its results even if it buys and sells nothing.

Buffett urges investors to ignore the fluctuations, and Berkshire will make money if stocks rise over time.

In 2020, for example, Berkshire lost nearly $50 billion in the first quarter as the pandemic took hold, but made $42.5 billion for the full year. Profit rose 10% at BNSF, with higher revenue per car from fuel surcharges partially offsetting lower freight volumes, while profit from Berkshire Hathaway Energy rose 4%.

Berkshire repurchased just $1 billion of its own stock, down from $3.2 billion in the first quarter, and compared with $51.7 billion in 2020 and 2021. Its $6.15 billion of stock purchases fell from $51.1 billion in the first quarter, when it took major stakes in oil companies Chevron Corp and Occidental Petroleum Corp.

15 Dead As Israel Pounds Gaza, Military Prepares For "Week Of Fighting"

Since the start of Friday's fresh Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, ostensibly toward decapitating the leadership of the Islamic Jihad following the Monday night arrest of its senior commander Bassem Saadi, the death toll has continued to rise, with Gaza's health ministry saying 15 Palestinians have been killed in the attacks so far.

As we previously detailed, the Israeli strikes were 'pre-emptive' in that they were not a response to initial rocket fire from Gaza, as is the usual case, but were launched with a declared intent to degrade the militant group Islamic Jihad's capabilities after days of security incidents along the border with Gaza. Since then, an Israeli official has said some 300 rockets and mortars have been launched from the strip as the two sides are once again on the brink of full-scale war, according to BBC. The last time Israel hit Gaza with what were at the time limited strikes targeting Hamas was mid-July, just after President Biden departed Tel Aviv to travel to Jeddah on his Mideast tour. Importantly, it's the biggest flare-up since the 11-day conflict in May 2021 wherein over 200 Palestinians and a dozen Israelis were killed.

But what the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced as the 'Operation Breaking Dawn' offensive is expected to last at least a week. The military is preparing for "a week of fighting," the IDF said Saturday. By day two of the operation, the IDF cited some 200 rockets launched from Gaza, with at least 30 having landed in Gaza, falling far short of targets in Southern Israeli. The IDF said 130 crossed into Israel with 60 intercepted by the Iron Dome, and the rest reportedly landing in open areas.

Israeli media in a mid-evening update (local time) indicated that some 400 rockets have been fired from Gaza since Friday afternoon, strongly suggesting that Hamas has also joined fighting alongside Islamic Jihad. In a Saturday morning press briefing the IDF said it's already taken out Islamic Jihad commanders and degraded military sites:

In the opening round of Israeli strikes, the military killed one of PIJ’s senior commanders, Tayseer Jabari, whom officials said was planning to attack Israeli civilians near the border. Jabari replaced Baha Abu al-Ata as the group’s commander in northern Gaza after the latter was killed in an Israeli strike in 2019.

In a briefing to reporters Saturday morning, military spokesperson Ran Kochav said the IDF had struck some 40 Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip, including six weapon manufacturing workshops, two weapons storage sites, six observation posts and five rocket-launching positions.

Accidental drowning suspected in death of Arkansas judge

The death of an Arkansas judge whose body was recovered from a lake is being investigated as an accidental drowning, authorities said.

Jeremiah T. Bueker, 48, went missing Saturday night and his body was recovered the next morning from Mud Lake in Reydell, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said. Maj. Gary McClain told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that Bueker went missing after going for a ride on a recreational vehicle. He was spending the weekend with family at a nearby cabin, McClain said. “It appears he decided to go swimming after maybe being dusty and he went missing,” he said. “No one was with him, he was alone.”

The sheriff’s office said crews used sonar to locate Bueker’s body at the bottom of the lake Sunday morning. Bueker was a county district judge for the northern district of Arkansas County.

SoftBank eyes Vision Fund layoffs after posting $23bn loss

SoftBank Group on Monday posted a record loss for the second straight quarter as market turmoil further spread across its portfolio of technology stocks.

In an unusually downbeat presentation, Masayoshi Son, the company's billionaire chairman and CEO, said he will undertake "significant cost reductions" at the Vision Fund including layoffs and becoming more selective in making new investments. "Unfortunately, the amount of investment has been greatly reduced," he said. "Since the financial resources are being squeezed, there are too many hunters who make investments. There will be no sanctuaries." The Vision Fund business had 387 employees as of March, according to SoftBank's annual report.

However, SoftBank also said it will buy back up to 400 billion yen worth of its own shares (that is $2,972,000,000 with current exchange rate) over the next year, in addition to the 1 trillion yen buyback program that runs until November. Son, who is SoftBank's biggest shareholder, has long maintained that the company's stock is undervalued.

The Japanese investment group reported a net loss of 3.16 trillion yen ($23.4 billion) in the April to June quarter, compared with 762 billion yen in net profit for the same period a year ago. The losses were steeper than the previous quarter's 2.1 trillion yen. SoftBank reports unrealized gains and losses on its portfolio of more than 300 tech stocks, most of which are managed by its two Vision Funds. In the latest quarter, the two Vision Funds and the Latin America Fund posted a combined 2.92 trillion yen in investment losses.

The share price of some of its publicly listed holdings, such as South Korean e-commerce company Coupang, U.S. ride-hailing company Uber Technologies and U.S. food delivery operator DoorDash, tumbled amid a global sell-off in the stock market. Some of these stocks have recovered in recent weeks.

Shares of some privately held portfolio companies also declined during the quarter. The cumulative investment return of Vision Fund 2, which has a higher percentage of unlisted portfolio companies than the first fund, fell into negative territory by the end of June, according to SoftBank's financial statement.

Son warned that shares of unlisted unicorns private companies valued at $1 billion or more are "overvalued" compared to listed ones. (but muh stock is 'under-valued') "Listed stocks are priced daily, but unlisted stocks are not," he said. "There are still many managers of unlisted unicorns who think they can raise funds at a higher price because their performance has increased compared to the previous round of financing. "The winter for unlisted unicorns will last much longer [than that for listed ones]."

SoftBank also reported an 820 billion yen foreign exchange loss as the yen's decline pushed up the value of its dollar-denominated debt....(that's not done either despite this from yesterday >>153276 it's just taking a rest)

As for reducing costs, Son said SoftBank is in talks to sell U.S. investment company Fortress Investment Group, which it bought in 2017 for $3.3 billion. Its financial statement does not reflect investment gains or losses in some SoftBank portfolio companies such as China's Alibaba Group Holding, which is classified as an equity method investment. Son has said he prefers to look at net asset value, which SoftBank calculates by adding up the value of the shares it owns and subtracting net debt, as a measure of performance.

Nvidia Plunges After Preannouncing Terrible Q2 Results, Slashes Guidance, Blames "Macroeconomic Headwinds"

Just as stocks were set to blast off right out of the gates as the "most hated rally" accelerates, moments ago investors got a cold shower after video chip giant Nvidia preannounced disappointing Q2 earnings more than 2 weeks early (originally scheduled for Aug 24), blaming the reverse bullwhip effect for taking $1.3 billion of charges "primarily for inventory" and slashing guidance due to "lower sell-in of Gaming products reflecting a reduction in channel partner sales likely due to macroeconomic headwinds" and "challenging market conditions that are expected to persist into the third quarter." The only good news: the company isn't trimming (or ending) its buybacks which will continue as scheduled.

Here are the details:

-Prelim revenue $6.70 billion, far below the est $8.10, down 19% sequentially and up 3% from the prior year reflecting weaker than forecasted Gaming revenue

-Prelim adjusted gross margin 46.1%

-Prelim adjusted operating expenses $1.75 billion

(They don't even want to talk about it-no call today)

-Second quarter results are expected to include approximately $1.32 billion of charges, primarily for inventory and related reserves.

-The only silver lining: buybacks will continue: "We plan to continue stock buybacks as we foresee strong cash generation and future growth."

Pretty bad when that is the best 'result' outta all this-continuing to prop yer own stock

-The shortfall relative to the May revenue outlook of $8.10 billion was primarily attributable to lower sell-in of Gaming products reflecting a reduction in channel partner sales likely due to macroeconomic headwinds. In addition to reducing sell-in, the company implemented pricing programs with channel partners to reflect challenging market conditions that are expected to persist into the third quarter.

-Data Center revenue, though a record, was somewhat short of the company’s expectations, as it was impacted by supply chain disruptions.

-The significant charges incurred in the quarter reflect previous long-term purchase commitments we made during a time of severe component shortages and our current expectation of ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty,” said Colette Kress, EVP and CFO of NVIDIA.

-“Our gaming product sell-through projections declined significantly as the quarter progressed,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “As we expect the macroeconomic conditions affecting sell-through to continue, we took actions with our -Gaming partners to adjust channel prices and inventory.

-There will be no call today, and instead NVIDIA will host its conference call on the previously scheduled time at Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. PT (5 p.m. ET).

Mecha-Godzilla:"yes I will begin...after the Federal Reserve Act was signed into law in 1913 and we, as a world, were thrust into the start of World War 1 but make no mistake-those issues had been simmering for many years prior and it took the creation the Federal Reserve System to make sure the players on both sides were well funded-this is a common theme for ALL wars that are created-being on both sides so that regardless of who "wins"...the system ALWAYS wins-there are no winners in this process for regular people even though it has always declared a war "won" by one side or the other."

Godzilla:" I hafta agree on that and all you need to do is look at the way that Hitler 'embarrassed' the French during the occupation of France by making them sign the Armistice ending hostilities and allowing the Nazis to occupy 3/5ths of France during the opening stages of WW2..it was done in the very same railway car (and in the very same place!) that the Germans surrendered WW1 in 1918-but they thought they were going there to negotiate a surrender and not be forced to agree to what they perceived were draconian terms-so having the French arrive and having to agree to THEIR terms was the ultimate insult-but we are getting a little ahead of ourselves."

Mkt Fag:"Let's back up to the start of WW1 and as already mentioned there were several issues that were already 'boiling' and ready to explode...it took one issue to "trigger" it but let us look at a few of them: the first one is European Expansionism and is one of the top issues imo-you had the British and French at the height of it's colonization period control and other countries just weren't very accepting of this and felt threatened by that since most of those territories were forcibly taken over-you also can't leave out the Dutch here as they certainly had a role in the colonization process but were a bit moar stealth in their approach to it-so what this did was make countries chose sides and you had a recipe for a war based on the two major factions: Allied Powers (Britain and France) and Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire)-and a footnote to this is that Erdogan has basically been attempting to resurrect the Ottoman Empire over the last 25 years or so (he was the mayor of Istanbul in the 90's and then became PM in 2003 and then President in 2014)."

Mecha-Godzilla:"World War 1 was 'started' on July 28th 1914-so only 7 months after the Federal Reserve Act signed and almost to the day-deez niggas din't waste any time and most of what caused it was already simmering in the pot and just needed a spark-which it got-see below."

Mkt Fag:" Keep in mind that you had the banking system drastically changed to benefit the hand-picked 'winners' of the 1908 'panic'-see posts on that at bottom of cap#4-the winners were as follows: Kuhn, Loeb, Bernard Baruch, J.P. Morgan, Eugene Meyer, Paul Warburg, Max Warburg, Jacob Schiff, Louis Brandeis, Alfred Rothschild-there are a few moar but those are the main ones that came out of the 1908 'panic'. It is also important to note that the U.S. was presented as 'neutral' and did not officially enter WW1 until 1917 but because of the monetary system set-up we were 'booming' and our GDP was up 20% between 1914 and 1917-sitting back and profiting from the war we were not really in until the end."

Mecha-Godzilla:"And what in the fukushima was gong on with the YUGE imbalance on 'your side'-there existed a gigantic discrepancy in the amount of purchases (war supplies) and war bonds that the Allied powers bought-over 3 billion dollars in wartime orders and borrowed over 2 billion dollars in bonds but the Central Powers only had purchased $20m-so it was clear who was gonna 'win' that war and all they (US bankers) did was sit back and watch the rest of the world literally destroy itself and laughed all the way to the bank-also noted is that we 'loaned the French and British millions of $'s through our banks and if Germany 'won' all of that would have been worthless."

Godzilla:"The next issue was Nationalism (specifically Serbia) and this has been used time and again to start wars-as if you shouldn't be proud of your 'Nation' but there is a catch to this as what habbens is that these movements start out pretty organic and then get taken over or co-opted (from the inside) and then become something they were never really intended to be-in this case it is a bit different as tensions had been rising about the European Expansionism (i.e. colonization-so they had every right to be wary) issue that was on full retard-mode in the 1800s (the violence starts-and this is not saying that every single example of this is peaceful-by no means-(it's a pattern of taking over an organization to steer it towards a clash with the "other side")-see the above comment about playing both sides as they always are funded by the same people so the system always wins no matter who is declared the 'winner'."

The Moscow Exchange - the country's largest bourse - said it will from Aug 15 halve the proportion of dollars in the collateral that users of its platform provide to carry out transactions to 25% from 50%. De-dollarisation in Russia has gained pace since Western countries imposed unprecedented sanctions after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24. The sanctions have impaired Moscow's access to international economic and global trading systems. The central bank said on Monday it planned to differentiate the cost of foreign currency loans for legal entities and their investments in debt securities depending on whether they were denominated in currencies of friendly or unfriendly countries.

Silver’s been the worst-performer among major precious metals in 2022, but prices may have fallen far enough to spark a modest recovery.

Silver’s trajectory will closely follow gold, and investors should consider buying both metals when the Fed makes a proper dovish pivot and there’s meaningful easing of policy to support growth, said Wayne Gordon, executive director for commodities and FX at UBS Group’s global wealth management unit. “Once we get to that recovery phase in gold, we believe silver can really outperform the yellow metal,” said Gordon.

Gold was little changed at $1,789.42 an ounce, with the dollar steady as traders await a key report on US consumer inflation due Wednesday. Palladium fell and platinum edged higher.
