The trial of JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s former head of precious metals has offered unprecedented insights into the trading desk that dominates the global gold market.

Michael Nowak*, who ran precious metals trading at JPMorgan for over a decade, is being tried in Chicago along with colleagues Gregg Smith and Jeffrey Ruffo for conspiring to manipulate gold and silver markets. The focus now is on the jury, which began deliberations late Friday, but the proceedings have already shone a new light on the inner workings of the business, from its profitability and market share to its largest clients. The court was shown internal figures detailing the bank’s annual profits from precious metals, the first time such detailed information has ever been made public. JPMorgan’s earnings reports don’t break out the results from the precious metals desk, or even its broader commodities unit. A spokesperson declined to comment on the disclosures in the trial.

In summary: the business is a consistent moneymaker for JPMorgan, notching up annual profits between $109 million and $234 million a year between 2008 and 2018. The lion’s share of that comes from trading in financial markets, but the bank does plenty of physical business as well. Trading and transporting physical precious metals makes the bank about $30 million a year on average.

Still, the profits disclosed in the trial have been overshadowed more recently: in 2020, JPMorgan made $1 billion in precious metals as the pandemic created unprecedented arbitrage opportunities, according to people familiar with the matter. JPMorgan holds tens of billions of dollars in gold in vaults in London, New York and Singapore. (and if you believe that....see hypothecation and rehypothecation) It is one of four clearing members of the London market, where global gold prices are set by buying and selling metal held in a few London vaults -- including JPMorgan’s and the Bank of England’s. JPMorgan is the biggest player among a small group of “bullion banks” that dominate the precious metals markets, (Shitibank is the other and that was recently uncovered as the switched the Gold derivatives from the FOREX classification back to precious metals-where they always should have been-and having JPM in there was no big revelation but it did expose Shitibank as the second largest one in Au**) and internal documents presented by prosecutors provided a glimpse of just how dominant a role the bank has played.

In 2010, for example, 40% of all transactions in the gold market were cleared by JPMorgan. JPMorgan’s top precious metals employees on the desk were remunerated handsomely, and some jurors audibly gasped when the court was told how much the defendants had earned.

Ruffo, the bank’s hedge fund salesman, was paid $10.5 million from 2008 to 2016. Smith, the top gold trader, got $9.9 million. Nowak, their boss, made the most of all: $23.7 million over the same period.

Their pay was linked to the profits they made for the bank. FBI agent Marc Troiano, citing internal JPMorgan data, told the court that the total profit allocated to Ruffo from 2008 to 2016 was $70.3 million. Smith generated about $117 million over the same period, while Nowak made the bank $186 million, including $44 million in 2016. Hedge funds like Moore Capital, Tudor Investment Corp and George Soros’s eponymous firm were some of the desk’s most important clients. Getting access to those clients was the main reason for retaining Ruffo after the bank’s acquisition of Bear Stearns, according to ex-trader Christian Trunz, who testified against his former bosses and referred to Ruffo as the best salesman on Wall Street. Being a top client of JPMorgan came with perks: employees at the funds could be provided with free tickets to the US Open, according to messages involving Nowak shown during the trial.

Another set of important clients were central banks, which trade gold for their reserves and are among the biggest players in the bullion market. At least ten central banks held their metal in vaults run by JPMorgan in 2010, according to documents disclosed in court.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is pursuing a plan to protect residents from the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) movement. The plan includes proposed new legislation for the 2023 legislative session as well as administrative action.

The ESG movement “threatens the vitality of the American economy and Americans’ economic freedom by targeting disfavored individuals and industries to advance a woke ideological agenda,” DeSantis said.

“The leveraging of corporate power to impose an ideological agenda on society represents an alarming trend,” DeSantis said when announcing the new plan Wednesday. “From Wall Street banks to massive asset managers and big tech companies, we have seen the corporate elite use their economic power to impose policies on the country that they could not achieve at the ballot box. Through the actions I announced today, we are protecting Floridians from woke capital and asserting the authority of our constitutional system over ideological corporate power.”

According to Robeco Institutional Asset Management B.V., “ESG funds are portfolios of equities and or bonds for which environmental, social and governance factors have been integrated into the investment process. … Environmental factors include the contribution a company or government makes to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions.”

Mastercard, for example, created a personalized carbon footprint tracker in collaboration with Swedish fintech Doconomy. The Mastercard Carbon Tracking product was created as an “easy-to-use API [that] allows financial institutions and merchants to embed carbon tracking inside their own digital products,” it states.

ESG, many argue, is based on the social credit score first established in China, which restricts citizens’ movements and freedoms based on their scores. When announcing the system, in 2014, the Chinese Communist Party said it was “an important component of the Socialist market economy system and the social governance system … keeping trust is glorious and breaking trust is disgraceful.”

“Trust” is defined by the Chinese government.

“China’s social credit system is an ambitious initiative to build a database that monitors individual, corporate, and government behavior across the country in real time. According to the Chinese government, the system will use big data to build a high-trust society where individuals and organizations follow the law,” China Briefing reports. Government authorities submit data on businesses directly through standard government inspections, which is integrated in the National Internet+ Monitoring System that analyzes the data to calculate ratings.

“Businesses are mostly assessed on standard regulatory and compliance criteria that they are already legally required to fulfill,” according to the report. “This includes paying taxes on time, holding requisite licenses, meeting product quality standards, and fulfilling environmental protection requirements,” among other industry-specific requirements.

In America, "woke elites use ESG investing to prop up far left policies, undermining our national security and raising prices for Americans," state House Speaker Designate Paul Renner said. The Florida House will fight “to stop woke financial titans who seek to dictate policy to Floridians regardless of our choices at the ballot box.”

The 2023 legislative proposal would prohibit big banks, credit card companies and money transmitters from discriminating against customers based on their religious, political, or social beliefs, which have been identified as contributing to the score.

It will also prohibit State Board of Administration (SBA) fund managers from considering ESG factors when investing state money and require SBA fund managers to only consider maximizing return on investment on behalf of Florida’s retirees.

Housing Inventory August 1st Update: Up 32.3% Year-over-year

Inventory is still increasing rapidly, but the inventory build has slowed somewhat over the last few weeks. Still, inventory is increasing much faster than normal for this time of year (both in percentage terms and in total inventory added). Here are the same week inventory changes for the last four years: 2022:13.4K 2021: 4.4K, 2020: -13.4K, 2019: 2.9K

Inventory bottomed seasonally at the beginning of March 2022 and is now up 124% since then. More than double! Altos reports inventory is up 32.3% year-over-year and is now 23.2% above the peak last year. As of July 29th, inventory was at 539 thousand (7-day average), compared to 526 thousand the prior week. Inventory was up 2.5% from the previous week.

Inventory is still historically low. Compared to the same week in 2021, inventory is up 32.3% from 407 thousand, however compared to the same week in 2020 inventory is down 14.0% from 627 thousand. Compared to 3 years ago, inventory is down 44.6% from 972 thousand. The blue line is the year-over-year data, the red line is compared to two years ago, and dashed purple is compared to 2019.

Two years ago (in 2020) inventory was declining all year, so the two-year comparison will get easier all year.

Based on the recent increases in inventory, my current estimate is inventory will be up compared to 2020 in late August or early September of this year, and back to 2019 levels in early 2023.(Which is exactly what we been saying in here for a few months now-as the wheels are coming off the housing market they just wanna soften it with flowery language like "seems to suggest" or"could be trending this way"-take a look in your own neighborhood(s)-how many homes are for sale and how long have they been for sale-this is not rocket science)

Black Knight sees record slowdown in home price growth in June, and biggest jump in inventory in 12 years

Black Knight Inc. BKI, -1.16% said Monday that year-over-year home price growth in June dropped by nearly two percentage points, which the data analytics company said was the "greatest single-month slowdown on record" since at least the early 1970s. Black Knight said the slowdown to 17.3% annual home price growth in June from 19.3% was broad based was a record by far, "and it wasn't even close," said Black Knight Data & Analytics President Ben Graboske; in comparison, the strongest single-month slowing during the 2006 housing downturn was 1.19 percentage points. The slowdown comes along with a 22% increase in the number of homes listed for sale the past two months, which was the biggest inventory gain in 12 years. Russia’s Slump in Oil Exports Abates, Moscow’s Revenues Go Up

Russia’s seaborne crude shipments have stabilized at a level about 500,000 barrels a day below the peak they reached after Moscow’s troops invaded Ukraine in February and remain little changed from where they were before before the attack.

Outflows rebounded in the week to July 29, hitting a four-week high of 3.5 million barrels a day, according to vessel tracking data monitored by Bloomberg. But four-week average shipments, which smooth out some of the volatility in weekly figures, were little changed at about 3.2 million barrels a day.

Based on current destinations, the average flow of Russian crude to Asia has stabilized at about 1.75 million barrels a day, down from a plateau of more than 2.1 million barrels a day in April and May. Shipments to European buyers, are averaging about 1.3 million barrels a day, down from more than 1.85 million barrels a day before the invasion.

There’s still a long way to go before a drop in shipments hits the Kremlin's war chest hard enough to give President Vladimir Putin second thoughts about his invasion of Ukraine. Rising crude prices have boosted Russia’s export duty rates this month, with four-week average export duty receipts edging higher.

Crude Flows by Destination:

Asia: Shipments to China averaged 745,000 barrels a day in the most recent four-week period, down from 810,000 barrels a day in the four weeks ended July 22. Flows to India were 740,000 barrels a day, compared with a revised 828,000 barrels a day.

Europe: The volume shipped from Russia to northern Europe fell to a two-month low in the four weeks to July 29, averaging 364,000 barrels a day. Shipments to Mediterranean buyers rebounded to a four-week high of 758,000 barrels a day, just 66,000 barrels a day below their post-Ukraine-invasion peak. A tanker anchored off Bilbao would mark the first delivery to Spain since April, if it discharges. Combined shipments to Bulgaria and Romania remained unchanged at 208,000 barrels a day in the four weeks to July 29, at a little more than half their recent peak.

Flows by Export Location: Aggregate crude flows from Russian ports jumped by 567,000 barrels a day, or 19%, to a four-week high of 3.51 million barrels a day in the seven days to July 29. Flows were higher from all regions.

Export Revenue: Moscow’s revenue from export duty jumped to an eight-week high in the week to July 29, up by $25 million, or 16%, to $180, according to calculations by Bloomberg.

Origin-to-Location Flows: A total of 34 tankers loaded 24.5 million barrels from the country’s export terminals in the week to July 29, vessel-tracking data and port agent reports show. That’s the most in four weeks. Destinations are based on where vessels signal they are heading at the time of writing, and some will almost certainly change as voyages progress. The total volume of crude on ships loading from Russia’s Baltic terminals edged lower in the week to July 29, with a rebound in flows to Asia. A ship heading across the Atlantic is showing its destination as Cuba. Flows from Novorossiysk in the Black Sea jumped to an eight-week high in the week to July 29, driven by high flows into the Mediterranean. Arctic shipments rose for a third week. Crude flows from Russia’s three eastern oil terminals regained the previous week’s losses.

11-9355 USAF E-11A GLEX (usually BLKWFXX) out of Riyadh with it's second trip north today-this is known as B.A.C.N or Battlefield Airborne Communications Node so think of this as an aerial Wi-Fi platform that allows all the ACs in the area (old and new) to have a common comms point-this AC does that for them and allows older ones to talk to newer ones since you have tankers that are well over 40 years old and current technology fighters in this area.

This is one of the newer ones as the older versions have bigger appendages that stick out of the air frame see cap #4-this one incorporates them much better-cap #3

Hello QRB. Hope you are well. UK Bread anon here with an an update on the London traf_cam pics digs.

We occasionally find sauces which are incorrect with their attributed dates for pics and vids, but UK anons have bern looking at hundreds and hundreds of sauces know better. A recent Shutterstock vid labeled ‘London circa December 2013’ is actually taken before 23SEP2013.

We use multiple markers such as construction crane lights and construction shrouding on Westminster Palace, tide times, bus stop signs, and sidewalk signs, all gud to show temporary changes.

Our current working “bookends” as we call them, (the markers at the beginning and end of a period of time) for the Q trafcam Embankment pics is currently from roughly 14DEC to 26DEC. Our 12 days of Christmas.

Interestingly, our untrustworthy sauce from Shutterstock gave us a rethink on the ‘moon’ behind LE. The vid showed some air traffic behind London Eye which, although not precisely a match, we must admit for the occasional aircraft straying a bit on approach.

Not saying it’s a plane in ROT1. Just keeping an open mind. There is a notably high tide seen in ROT1 which we also use as a marker. Some in our Christmas week can be eliminated for various reasons such as occuring in daylight, during reg business hours for our restaurant ships, during a pm rush hour when we should see buses, etc.
