New US ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy to arrive on Friday

US ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy has furthered her government’s commitment to climate action and security in the ­region ahead of her arrival in Australia on Friday.

In a video shared by the US embassy, the only surviving daughter of former US president John F. Kennedy gave particular attention to the two countries’ military history. “I know that our countries are the strongest of allies, and that our parents and grandparents fought side by side for more than 100 years,” the author and attorney said.

“Their sacrifices have made it possible for us to live in two of the world’s greatest democracies, countries that share a com­mitment to individual freedom, the rule of law and economic ­opportunity.

“None of us expects to be the one to have to fight for freedom, but we each must be prepared to stand up for what we believe in if we want to pass these precious values on.”

The comments come in the wake of the Pacific Islands Forum, where the influences of China and the US were the subject of debate.

“No one is more committed to advancing peace and stability, fighting climate change and increasing American economic engagement in the region than the Biden-Harris administration.”

“I’m eager to learn all I can about First Nations Australians and their culture and traditions, Australia’s modern multicultural society, the incredible natural environment and abundant natural resources.”

In May, the 64-year-old was confirmed as ambassador to Australia. She previously was ambassador for Japan in the Obama administration from 2013 to 2017.

At her swearing-in in June Ms Kennedy declared Australia a “vital ally”.

“I am grateful to President (Joe) Biden for his leadership and for giving me the chance to represent America to our vital ally Australia,” Ms Kennedy said on social media.

She succeeds Arthur Culvahouse, who left the position shortly after former US president Donald Trump left office in early 2021.

The US and UK want to escalate the Russia-Ukraine conflict into a larger confrontation between Moscow and members of the European Union, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday in an interview with RT and Sputnik.

Mortgage applications decreased 6.3 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending July 15, 2022.

The Refinance Index decreased 4 percent from the previous week and was 80 percent lower than the same week one year ago. The seasonally adjusted Purchase Index decreased 7 percent from one week earlier. The unadjusted Purchase Index increased 16 percent compared with the previous week and was 19 percent lower than the same week one year ago. With higher mortgage rates, the refinance index has declined sharply over the last several months. According to the MBA, purchase activity is down 19% year-over-year unadjusted. The purchase index is now only 14% above the pandemic low.

A Ukrainian nuclear power plant located in the city of Energodar has been attacked by three ‘kamikadze drones’ belonging to the Ukrainian armed forces, Russian media reports, citing local officials.

According to them, Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, located in southeastern Ukraine, has not been damaged.

Its reactor was not impacted by the attack either.

The IMF hopes to complete the negotiations with Sri Lanka on a bailout package "as quickly as possible" and the "moment there is a government" in the country, its Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Wednesday, hours after the crisis-hit island nation elected a new president.

Sri Lanka has been gripped by severe shortages of fuel, food and other essentials after its foreign reserves dried up. Citizens have turned their anger on the government and forced once-powerful President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign last week. On Wednesday, the Sri Lankan Parliament elected Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe as his replacement. Syria cuts diplomatic ties with Ukraine

Damascus says it was a tit-for-tat move

Damascus has cut diplomatic ties with Kiev, the Syrian foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.

This comes in response to a similar step by Ukraine last month that followed Syria’s recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.

“The Syrian Arab Republic has decided to sever diplomatic relations with Ukraine in line with the principle of reciprocity and in response to the Ukrainian government's decision to do so,” the ministry announced on its website.

Kiev said it was cutting diplomatic relations with Syria in late June in response to the decision by Damascus to follow Russia’s example and recognize the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states.

“There will be no relations between Ukraine and Syria” Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said back then, threatening Damascus with sanctions.

Kiev closed its embassy in Syria in 2016, accusing the country’s president, Bashar Assad of crimes against his own people, and in 2018 it ordered Syrian diplomats out of Ukraine.

Damascus is a close ally of Moscow. In 2015, Russia sent an expeditionary force to Syria at the request of Damascus, to help it defeat IS and other terrorist groups.

Market Makers and their role in the Exchanges (rigging) see Hypothecation and Stock Loans

The market makers’ "job" is to fill orders at 'best' prices. The problems occur when you get a stock that the system doesn't want to see go up or down...this is where market rigging comes into play. What they do is to siphon off orders (depending on which way they want an equity to go)- by running them off the major exchanges to OTC (Over-the Counter)-and this has become a lot more common in the retail aka (you) trading arena because they can take selling or buying pressure off a stock. What they typically do is widen the spread between the bid (sale) price and the ask (Buy)price and they make the money in between that widened spread-it's especially effective when you have noob trades that use a 'Buy at Market' or 'Sell at Market' orders..don't do this. That is music to the systems rigging ability.

There is an inherent conflict of interest in this system especially if they are a broker dealer-faced with an opportunity to sell the firm’s inventory before others in a declining market or buy for firm’s inventory before others in a rising market.

They always maintain an inventory of most stocks they deal in (your broker has to know who to go to in any given equity to accomplish this)-so it's not just something they can submit to ANY Market Maker and they can do it. This is not as effective in a high-volume, highly liquid stock for very long I'll say-it certainly can help it move in one way but if the flow is decidedly one way there is little that can be done BUT by doing this they can discourage just enough people or smaller fish to have an overall impact or lessen the movement of any given equity so mission accomplished. Take the post about hypothecation regarding the NYFRB-this is where the brokers can take those orders and then 'loan'-create out of nothing-them out to whoever dafuq they want and they never see the actual major exchanges in the original form. Those 'loaned' shares are then sold against the major exchanges (i.e like the examples that show up on the COMEX Silver trades-different dynamic but still the same "out of thin air" example) and appear as selling (in the case of wanting to drop an equity's price and the reverse in an attempt to drive it up) Now you might be asking "where did that original buy order go?" Well it shows up in the OTC exchanges and after the regular market drops (major exchanges) and those 'loaned' shares are returned to the broker at a lower price and the difference is the money made at the time of the orders placement and then when they are returned at a lower price. Your order is still "filled" but it never saw the major exchange to accomplish it and they just made money on your submitted order by loaning it out to another who sold it short-naked shorting-and if you already own the stock you lose money in that position too AND have just added to it. This works very well in low-volume issues

BOJ Holds Firm, Putting Growth Fears Ahead of Weak Yen

The Bank of Japan left its rock-bottom interest rates unchanged Thursday as it put concern over the economy ahead of any potential implications for the yen for now, further cementing its outlier stance compared with inflation-fighting central banks overseas.

The BOJ’s concern over the growth trajectory is linked to its view that a solid recovery is necessary to help make inflation sustainable. While it raised its price forecasts for the current fiscal year to show inflation averaging 2.3% for the year ending in March, it sees that momentum slowing in the 12 months that follow. With the stand-pat decision, Governor Haruhiko Kuroda is continuing to hunker down on stimulus despite a wave of interest-rate hikes by his peers as they try to rein in much stronger price growth. The European Central Bank is poised to raise borrowing costs later Thursdayto leave the BOJ as the sole remaining dove among major central banks in developed economies.

The continued holding pattern and its bias toward further easing shows the BOJ is still prepared to risk a further weakening of the yen and renewed attacks on its yield cap as it pursues its goal of steady growth with sustainable inflation. The central bank has gained some breathing space to hold firm on stimulus after concerns over the global economy eased some of the pressure on the yen and 10-year yields.
