ICBM Test Rocket Exploded Seconds After Launch, Briefly Setting Fire To California Base

A late night ICBM missile test in California ended in disaster, as it exploded just seconds after lift-off on Wednesday. (Cap#2 is related to article below and NOT to this story-same location though')

Officials with the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, California confirmed that "The Minotaur II space launch vehicle exploded approximately 11 seconds after launching off the test pad at 11:01 p.m. local time, Vandenberg," which was announced Thursday morning. The incident resulted in a fire on base, though officials noted that debris from the blast didn't stray outside of the "immediate vicinity" of the launch bad. The local Vandenberg Fire Department responded and was able to put out the fire before it threatened other areas of the base. No injuries were reported.

A cause of the failed test was not immediately clear, and it's under investigation. Local reports, citing military press releases, say the test was originally slated for Thursday morning but was moved up to late Wednesday night for unknown reasons. "The military base was testing the U.S. Air Force’s new missile rocket, which is expected to be used with the future LGM-35A Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile," one area report details. "Both are being developed by the Air Force’s Nuclear Weapons Center to will replace the aging Minuteman missiles that have previously been tested at the Central Coast base, located near Lompoc," the reported added. According to a defense journal the launch was intended to demonstrate the vehicle's "preliminary design concepts and relevant payload technologies in operationally realistic environments," based on an Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center statement.

Vandenberg Space Force Base is located in a pretty isolated area (west of Santa Barbara) and the launch area here is not really visible even if you go up the mountains to the east.

Once the vehicle lifts off you can see it of course-and if you've ever seen a big rocket go up..it's quite an experience..never got to see a shuttle go up but saw them land at Edwards in the 80's and one at Cape in 97 also saw the Mars Pathfinder launch from Kennedy in 1997 on the same trip

They even were setting up for a Space Shuttle launch from here in 1986 with the original shuttle Enterprise-and although they canceled the program..who noes if they din't just get one up if the conditions were right-probably really hard to hide it though and the noise is much different than the other rockets outta here (Titan) at the time-you never know though if it was foggy enough and they may have just officially canceled it and then did it-after all look at how many things that we were told were canceled that ended up continuing...too many to list.

Dis one is the racing version of the 959-they built the 959 as a technical exercise and it had quite a bit of advanced electronics and suspension at the time and iirc it was built to take advantage of the Rally Series since the cars they were running from Audi, Lancia, Peugeuot were just BEASTS-and they ended up changing the rules to not allow such a big performance level in those cars-there were quite a few accidents and some spectators got killed in the Group B rally era so they had this car-the 959 and they couldn't run it in that series (rally) since the rules were changed to make them moar pedestrian.

Porsche then slapped it's racing engine that they developed for the failed Indycar project (that went into the 956 too) and then entered it at Lemans in the GTX category (experimental) and it won it's first time out. They ran it the next year and it din't finish (driver hit a barrier and it caught fire-the story is pretty much untold cause the driver at the time still won't talk about it but totally obvious it hit it's right side) and burned up pretty bad cap #1-2

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System sold about $6 billion of its stakes in private equity funds to second-hand buyers, severing ties with a slew of past managers and freeing up cash for new wagers.

The $440 billion public pension fund, the largest in the US, has cycled through four investment chiefs since 2009 and has long wrestled with the complexity of its $50 billion in private equity holdings. Calpers hired Jefferies Financial Group Inc. to explore ways to clean up its portfolio and shop a swath of assets, according to people familiar with the matter. Lexington Partners, an investment business of Franklin Resources Inc., and CVC Capital Partners’ Glendower Capital snapped up pieces in separate sales that wrapped up over the past two weeks, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private transactions. The deal is not only the largest of its kind by Calpers, but private equity executives said it’s probably the biggest-ever involving second-hand fund stakes changing hands. Trading in such size came at a price: Calpers sold its holdings at a roughly 10% discount to their value in September 2021, some of the people said. The fund softened the blow thanks in part to how it structured the deal, they said.

The blockbuster transaction generates money for investment chief Nicole Musicco, who took over earlier this year, to make new wagers as markets remain volatile. She has told Calpers directors that she wants to build a team that would buy stakes in private companies. That would let Calpers gain more control and bypass private equity firms like Blackstone Inc. or Carlyle Group Inc. “The sale positions us to act on our new asset allocation and allows us to capitalize on market opportunities,” Musicco said in a statement to Bloomberg. Calpers drew up plans last year to increase private equity and grow private debt. The haircuts for various assets sold by Calpers range from high single-digit percentages to about 20%, some of the people said. In a move to make any discount less punitive, Calpers opted to defer some payments beyond June 30, the last day of its fiscal year, people said. That allows Calpers to continue collecting some of the cash generated by the investments. And by not taking all of the sale proceeds upfront, Calpers can avoid a large balance of undeployed cash, which would drag down performance for the latest fiscal year.

Not uncommon for big deals to be done at a discount to current share price as the buyers will get a discount ans the seller doesn't have to piece this out into the open market (which lacks ANY depth at this point _basically means that there are no buyers in size so if you try to sell a big stake in anything you'll just end up tanking the stock-so it behooves the seller to do it this way and way less time-consuming.

Twitter lays off 30% of talent acquisition team

Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) laid off 30% of its talent acquisition team Thursday, according to the Wall Street Journal, as the company is embroiled in a tumultuous acquisition deal with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The layoffs, reported to be fewer than 100 people, include Twitter's staff recruiters and third-party contractors.

The company announced a hiring freeze in May, and Musk speculated publicly that he would cut staff once if he takes over the company. Japan's current account surplus down 93% in May

Japan's current account surplus plunged 92.8 percent in May from a year earlier to 128.4 billion yen ($944.5 million) on ballooning imports driven by soaring energy prices amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a weakening yen, the Finance Ministry said Friday.

The current account balance, one of the widest gauges of international trade, remained in the black for the fourth consecutive month but the amount of surplus was the smallest on record for May, according to preliminary data released by the ministry.

Among key components, the goods trade deficit widened by 1.9 trillion yen from a year earlier to nearly 2.0 trillion yen, with the value of imports expanding 51.3 percent to 9.4 trillion yen, up for the 16th consecutive month.

The value of imports was the highest since comparable data became available in 1996, pushed up by increased imports of crude oil, liquefied natural gas and coal amid soaring energy prices. The price of crude oil nearly doubled from a year earlier in yen terms, according to the ministry. In addition to higher energy costs, the yen's sharp depreciation against the U.S. dollar also caused import prices to rise. In the reporting month, the dollar surged by 20 yen from a year earlier to around 129 yen.

By region, imports from Asia and the Middle East notably expanded, the ministry said.

Exports expanded 19.9 percent to 7.4 trillion yen, up for the 15th straight month, led by brisk shipments of iron and steel, mineral fuels and electronic components including semiconductors, with shipments to Asia especially growing.

The services trade deficit, meanwhile, shrank by 111.7 billion yen to 158.5 billion yen, largely due to a decrease in advertisement payments for U.S. tech giants known as GAFA -- Google LLC, Apple Inc., Facebook Inc. and Amazon.

The travel balance, which reflects money spent by foreign visitors in Japan on services and goods against the amount Japanese spent abroad, posted an 18.7 billion yen surplus, larger than the 17.4 billion yen logged a year earlier.

Amid the easing of restrictions associated with the coronavirus infections, Japan accepted 147,000 foreign visitors in May, a sharp rise from 10,000 a year ago, while 134,000 Japanese nationals left the country in the month, according to government data.

Primary income, which reflects returns on overseas investments, posted a surplus of 2.4 trillion yen, up 164.7 billion yen on year, due to an expansion in portfolio investment revenue.
