Twitter lays off 30% of talent acquisition team

Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) laid off 30% of its talent acquisition team Thursday, according to the Wall Street Journal, as the company is embroiled in a tumultuous acquisition deal with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The layoffs, reported to be fewer than 100 people, include Twitter's staff recruiters and third-party contractors.

The company announced a hiring freeze in May, and Musk speculated publicly that he would cut staff once if he takes over the company. The deal for Musk to acquire Twitter for $45 billion appears to be in jeopardy, as the billionaire entrepreneur is claiming that Twitter has more fake accounts than it admits publicly.

Twitter officials also met with reporters Thursday to defend their calculation that 5% of its daily active users may be fake.

Spray job or 'Painting' the Tape-usually they do this into the close so it's less obvious-see cap #3 for a definition..but is was either being propped for the coming news about the entire transaction "in jeopardy", shorts covering-becasue they know that this will eventually go through and want out (since it din't last long when all the markets were went upwards today) and the aforementioned being 'rewarded' for laying people off-and equities get rewarded becasue they are"saving $" but the cart before the horse here as the whole bot account thing is being glossed over and you wouldn't be laying off that may people if it were as good as they represent it at.

I'm gonna say that was shorts covering and realizing the inevitable-the complete desperation to get this deal done at the $54.20 price so they just said fugit and covered-probably madeabout $10 since this thing was in the high to mid $40 range from announcement of initial offer and then dropped below $45 on May 12th

They are SOOO desperate to get this out teh door to him and the current premium (based on teh daily close and not teh AH trades since that is a manipulators playground sicne there are no market orders you have to see what is offered in share size (for sale) and match your order to that exact amount in share size (lots) and the price-so you can't just hit a sell or buy button at whatever amount (# of shares) you want to trade in (sale or buy) and have it execute.

TWTR tender offer at $54.20 and current closing price of $38.79 gives you a premium of $15.41 or 38.72%'

The premium in this deal, %-wise is almost exactly the value of it's current shares price....

Truly saddened by this-all the other stuff aside as mentioned in the previous post these two made/make a great team and even though they couldn't work together any longer (in public) I still loved watching them together in the roles they had.

When 45 says he is deeply saddened I can tell that he truly means it-it's not just something that he is saying.

Cap 4 is a totally genuine admiration/respect for each other and even though the faces are a bit washed out you can still feel the warmth these two had for each other

Japan's current account surplus down 93% in May

Japan's current account surplus plunged 92.8 percent in May from a year earlier to 128.4 billion yen ($944.5 million) on ballooning imports driven by soaring energy prices amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a weakening yen, the Finance Ministry said Friday.

The current account balance, one of the widest gauges of international trade, remained in the black for the fourth consecutive month but the amount of surplus was the smallest on record for May, according to preliminary data released by the ministry.

Among key components, the goods trade deficit widened by 1.9 trillion yen from a year earlier to nearly 2.0 trillion yen, with the value of imports expanding 51.3 percent to 9.4 trillion yen, up for the 16th consecutive month.

The value of imports was the highest since comparable data became available in 1996, pushed up by increased imports of crude oil, liquefied natural gas and coal amid soaring energy prices. The price of crude oil nearly doubled from a year earlier in yen terms, according to the ministry. In addition to higher energy costs, the yen's sharp depreciation against the U.S. dollar also caused import prices to rise. In the reporting month, the dollar surged by 20 yen from a year earlier to around 129 yen.

By region, imports from Asia and the Middle East notably expanded, the ministry said.

Exports expanded 19.9 percent to 7.4 trillion yen, up for the 15th straight month, led by brisk shipments of iron and steel, mineral fuels and electronic components including semiconductors, with shipments to Asia especially growing.

The services trade deficit, meanwhile, shrank by 111.7 billion yen to 158.5 billion yen, largely due to a decrease in advertisement payments for U.S. tech giants known as GAFA -- Google LLC, Apple Inc., Facebook Inc. and Amazon.

The travel balance, which reflects money spent by foreign visitors in Japan on services and goods against the amount Japanese spent abroad, posted an 18.7 billion yen surplus, larger than the 17.4 billion yen logged a year earlier.

Amid the easing of restrictions associated with the coronavirus infections, Japan accepted 147,000 foreign visitors in May, a sharp rise from 10,000 a year ago, while 134,000 Japanese nationals left the country in the month, according to government data.

Primary income, which reflects returns on overseas investments, posted a surplus of 2.4 trillion yen, up 164.7 billion yen on year, due to an expansion in portfolio investment revenue.
