On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will hold talks over the price cap proposal with Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki. The US has also proposed an exception to the ban on maritime insurance for imports of Russian crude that are priced below the cap to prevent millions of barrels from being stranded, the Treasury official said Tuesday.

A price cap would be aimed at incentivizing just enough Russia to continue exporting oil as it would cover the country's marginal cost of production, while also cutting its profits for its war in Ukraine. But for the price cap to work, it will need widespread buy-in from other countries. And analysts have also warned that a cap could prompt Russia to retaliate by cutting off oil exports abruptly to create a spike in prices.

SpaceX booster rocket bursts into flames during test

A SpaceX booster rocket burst into flames during a ground test-firing on Monday in Texas as the company’s CEO Elon Musk looks to launch its next-generation Starship spacecraft into orbit this year. The test of the Super Heavy Booster 7 prototype was being live-streamed by the NASA Spaceflight website when an explosion shook the camera and a ball of fire engulfed the base of the booster. Inflation data 'already out of date:' White House downplays CPI expectations

With gas prices tumbling and tentative hopes that U.S. inflation might have peaked, you’d think the White House would eagerly await the upcoming release of new data on consumer prices for June. Not so much. President Joe Biden’s aides have aggressively downplayed expectations for Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index release because, they say, of technical factors in how CPI measures things like gas prices. “June CPI data is already out of date,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declared during Monday’s press briefing.

Furthermore, the designated acreage mentioned in this bill have largely been for sale at bargain prices for over 100 years with no takers because there is absolutely no water or any prospect of water for development. It seems that the real motivation for passage of this bill lies with the special interest groups that would benefit monetarily.

Through a complex series of land exchanges, Catellus Corp., a subsidiary of Santa Fe Pacific, would receive land that contains some of the richest gold deposits in the world. In exchange the public gets seventy-four widely scattered tracts of desert which have found no economic use in more than a century. These will have to be maintained at public expense, but Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbit says the National Park Service has the resources to accomplish this.

Catellus owns over 400,000 acres of worthless land in the California Mojave Desert. This land was obtained by Santa Fe Pacific and its predecessor railroad companies as part of the "checkerboard" railroad lands awarded for the building of the transcontinental railroad. Santa Fe transferred these lands which have been for sale for over 100 years, over to its subsidiary, Catellus Corp. In the land swap, Catellus Corp. will receive land from decommissioned military bases. One of the bases will be the Chocolate Mountain gunnery range. Fed Model Shows S&P 500 Is "Cheap", It May Get Cheaper

The selloff in US stocks this year means that they are now more attractive relative to bonds, according to the Fed Model. Still, the S&P 500 Index may get even cheaper if slowing growth and burning inflation mean corporate earnings trend lower while the Fed keeps raising rates.

The estimated earnings yield on the S&P 500 is about 5.95%, meaning that investors in stocks get to earn some 300 basis points more than what they get from 10-year Treasuries

Given that spread, the Fed Model would posit that stocks are undervalued. However, as the chart shows, the gap widened far more emphatically in the aftermath of the recession triggered by the financial crisis, and the current spread is less than the average of 380 basis points since then.

Earnings Season Begins As Wall Street Scrambles To Get Ahead Of The Carnage With Over 500 Downgrades In 5 Days

According to Goldman trader John Flood, this morning's CPI print coming with a much higher than expected 9+ handle will keep institutional investors frozen and the bank expects very little offense to be played over the next few weeks. Furthermore, as discussed earlier, 75bps was thought of as a lock for July but now this: Raphael Bostic signaled the Fed could hike by 100 bps after June's inflation report. "Everything is in play," the Atlanta branch chief said. Asked if that included by raising rates by that amount, he replied, "it would mean everything." Just an hour earlier Nomura made a 100bps rate hike its base case.

As Flood notes, there were "plenty of incomings on the "sharp reversal higher" in the mkt post CPI." Here is his explanation why stocks ramped:

"We flagged that the level of pre-trading (shorting) into this print was quite noteworthy. Institutional positioning remains VERY light...L/Os running record high cash levels and HFs gross/nets in bottom percentiles on 1, 3 and 5 yr look backs. Does it makes sense for mkt to move higher after a 9.1% print and BOC hiking by 100bps...of course not...but that was max pain trade today and this market seeks max pain. Difficult to truly analyze intraday moves with liquidity stuck at the lowest levels we have seen in years (S&P futures top of book liquidity near $3mm again).

At the end of day, Flood observes, "inflation remains incredibly sticky and earnings growth estimates are coming down. Be very patient buying the dips and use squeezes as opportunities to lighten up. We in for a long summer. Cap #2 chart is HF current gross and nets." And speaking of declining earnings growth estimates, tomorrow we get the first bank earnings (preview here) and as Goldman notes, there is plenty of angst regarding cautious commentary on calls which will lead to further sell side downgrades and PT cuts. To underscore just how much concern there is heading into earnings season, Flood notes that he got this nugget which sums up earnings sentiment nicely: "Sell-side analysts are scrambling to get ahead of Q2 earnings; over the last 5 days they’ve downgraded more than 500 names (on a net basis). Since the Financial Crisis, there’s only been 4 other weeks when that many names have been downgraded that quickly."

'Iconic' Fed Analyst Calls It: Powell Will Be Forced To End QT Much Sooner Than Expected

When BofA's top Rates strategist, and former NY Fed analyst, Marc Cabana speaks, investors, the Fed - and even his former Fed co-worker and repo guru, Zoltan Pozsar - listen. And what Cabana has to say now is extremely important. On Thursday morning, roughly around the time BofA's chief equity strategist Ssavita Subramanian slashed her S&P year-end price target by a whopping 25% from 4,500 to 3,600, Cabana's rates team published a must read note (which is also available to pro subs in the usual place), in which he wrote that the bank's rates team "is making substantial downward revisions to our rate forecasts following our US economics team’s new call for a mild 2022 recession and lower Fed funds rate path." What revisions? Well, as of today, in addition to sharply lowering its stock targets, BofA is also slashing its 10y Treasury end ’22 forecast from 3.50% to 2.75% and end ’23 forecast from 3.25% to 2.50%. The cuts come as BofA's economics team yesterday also slashed its forecast to reflect a US recession in 2022 and materially lowered the Fed funds rate path with the terminal Fed funds rate lowered from 4.00-4.25% to 3.25-3.50%, as the BofA economics team now expects 100bp of Fed rate cuts between Sep ’23 and Jun ’24 (thanks NEWFAGS!!! see above and KNOWN in February but here it is again just so you don't miss it >>126758 pb )

The lower Fed rate path and rate cuts in ’23-’24 are the most relevant aspects of our US economics team changes for the US rate path. We are lowering our 10yT end ’22 forecast from 3.50% to 2.75% and end ’23 forecast from 3.25% to 2.50%. Our new forecasts are very bullish vs the forwards given the expectation for Fed rate cuts in 2H23 and 1H24 (Exhibit 4). Our prior rate forecasts initially reflected a bullish rate bias vs the forwards but these revisions make us more constructive vs the current market. All of the above is not really Cabana's insight as he had no choice but to cut his rates forecast in a recession, which of course is not his call, and when the continued selloff in stocks will push investors into bonds.

What was, however, unique in Cabana's take is that the former Fed staffer, whose monetary forecasts always pan out correctly (he correctly predicted that the Fed would purchase corporate bonds just days before the Fed did just that), is that in his new base case for Fed cuts in 2H23 is expected to occur with an end to QT. To wit: "We expect the Fed will stop QT with rate cuts due to the contradictory signal it sends on monetary policy and to simplify policy communications; the Fed will likely not want to be easing with rate cuts but tightening with QT." Yes with wages actually FALLING (that was buried in yesterdays CPI#s report -4.6% YoY and inflation rising you've no choice in order to keep yer precious indices from crumbling but Jnaet haz da ESF (Exchange Stabilization Fund) button and can fix a lot of stuff quickly)

Cabana reminds us that the Fed has established a playbook for such an action in 2019 when the Fed cut started cutting rates in July ’19 and simultaneously announced a cessation of QT. Rampant U.S. dollar pushes euro below parity

The euro fell below parity to the dollar on Thursday, succumbing to the power of a rampant buck as traders boosted bets that surging U.S. inflation will force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at a faster pace than its central bank peers.

The euro EURUSD, -0.38% was down 0.8% to trade at 0.9980 per dollar, having earlier touched 0.9950. The U.S. currency gained 0.8% to $1.1792 per British pound GBPUSD, -0.62% and climbed 1.3% to 139.16 yen USDJPY, 1.08%, the weakest for the Japanese unit since 1998. Together these moves pushed the dollar index DXY, 0.67% up 1.2% to 109.17, its highest since 2002. The dollar’s fresh rally came after a U.S. consumer prices report released on Wednesday showed inflation running at 9.1%, the fastest pace in 41 years. Traders have swiftly added to bets that the Federal Reserve will be forced to raise interest rates aggressively. Futures markets are pricing in an 83.3% chance the Fed will hike its benchmark interest rate by 100 basis points to a range of 2.5% to 2.75% at its meeting in less than two weeks.

By contrast the ECB appears on course to only increase its deposit rate from minus 0.5% to above zero by September. Consequently, the difference between German 2-year bond yields and U.S. 2-year Treasuries has jumped to 269 basis points, making U.S. paper its most relatively attractive in more than three years, potentially adding to the demand for dollars.

Adding to concerns about the euro was signs of fresh political turmoil in Italy, where former ECB president Mario Draghi’s government narrowly averted a no-confidence vote.
