Nearly 300 Convicted Terrorists to Be Released From French Prison by 2023

French Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet has revealed that there will be nearly 300 convicted terrorists released from French prisons by 2023, 43 of them by the end of this year.

The French minister said that after the 43 releases this year, another sixty convicted terrorists would be set for release from prison in 2021 and added that they would all be subjected to additional measures to monitor their behaviour upon release, RTL reports.

“They are the subject of a double measure: a judicial control which means that they are taken care of when they leave and administrative surveillance measures,” Belloubet said.

While many, particularly on the right, have called for the government to enact special measures to keep dangerous terrorists behind bars, Belloubet said, “security detention exists for terrorism detainees convicted of murder. It is a limited number of people.”

“We can undoubtedly progress to guarantee the safety of the French and at the same time ensure the balance of the constitution,” she added.

Earlier this month French intelligence and law enforcement officials expressed concern over the upcoming terrorist releases with the Directorate General of Internal Security (DGSI) labelling the released prisoners a “major concern” and officials claiming they represented a bigger threat than returning fighters from the Middle East.

Republican member of parliament Eric Ciotti is one of those on the right concerned about the releases and has tabled a parliamentary motion for May in order to allow the government to keep dangerous jihadis in prison if they are a security threat.

French former anti-terrorist judge Marc Trévidic also warned of the dangers of convicted terrorists set for release last year saying, “We are in an area where the risk of re-offending is very high. You must not fool yourself. I would compare that to serial criminals, or serial rapists.”

“It’s even harder to deradicalise people who are highly radicalised than it is to fight against global warming,” he said and added, “We do not know what the good solutions to de-radicalise someone are. Nobody knows how we can be sure we have even succeeded.”

The French situation contrasts with that in the United Kingdom, where after a series of attacks by recently-released radicals, the government is passing emergency legislation to keep terror detainees behind bars for longer.

Welfare Usage Nosedives Under Trump Admin – for immigrants too

The number of people on the dole, particularly illegal immigrants, is taking a nosedive since the Trump administration cracked down on the abuse of the social welfare programs. Welfare is supposed to serve as temporary relief and must be reserved for needy citizens and legal residents.

This nosedive began before the new Supreme Court ruling that has recently become a ‘scandal.’ The new crisis manufactured by Justice Sotomayor and her Democrat allies is over the Supreme Court ruling that the President can add a reasonable public charge rule limiting green cards for immigrants who are believed to be likely dependents on welfare and social service programs.

The public charge rule bans any immigrant “unable to take care of himself or herself without becoming a public charge.” The rule has been on the books for almost 140 years according to Acting DHS Secretary Ken Cuccinelli.

Ex-Texas Border County Assistant DA Arrested in Migrant Client Solicitation Case

McALLEN, Texas – A Texas border county assistant district attorney faces federal charges for allegedly lying to authorities about a client soliciting and bribery investigation. The suspect’s brother, an immigration attorney, is currently facing bribery charges for allegedly paying detention center guards for lists migrants to generate into client leads.

On Monday morning, federal authorities arrested 27-year-old Cynthia Alanis, an ADA with the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office. DA Ricardo Rodriguez issued a statement revealing that Alanis’ arrest was not tied to her work and confirmed her termination of employment.

The indictment against Alanis was not filed at the federal courthouse in McAllen, but instead in Brownsville on February 18. On Monday afternoon, Alanis went before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya who notified her of the charges and set bond at $50,000.

Federal prosecutors allege that Alanis lied to agents with U.S. Homeland Security Investigations Office of Professional Responsibility, who were probing her brother Roel Alanis for a potential a bribery and soliciting scheme. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, in July 2019, authorities arrested Roel Alanis for allegedly paying guards at two immigration detention centers for list of detainees.

“[Roel Alanis] would then visit, or instruct others to visit, illegal aliens for the purpose of hiring his law firm as their attorney in immigration proceedings,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed at the time. Roel Alanis is currently awaiting trial on a seven-count indictment.

Erdogan Forces Recaptured Nayrab, But Lost Another Dozen Of Villages To Syrian Army

On February 24 morning, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other Idlib groups supported by the Turkish Army launched a new attempt to capture the village of Nayrab from the Syrian Army. Turkish-backed rebels bedecked with ISIS insignias once again reached the vicinity of the village, but were forced to retreat under strikes from the Syrian Army and the Russian Aerospace Forces. Pro-Turkish sources complained that ‘regime troops’ are using mines, road blocks, fortifications and even trenches to protect their positions. The devilry of the Assad regime has no bounds.

In the evening, Turkish-led forces carried out a second attack on Nayrab entering its eastern part and engaging army troops in a series of clashes. The fighting in the area continued overnight and by February 25 Idlib groups have established control of at least a half of the town. Pro-Turkish sources claim that entire Nayrab is in the hands of Turkish-led forces. Pro-government sources say that the lashes are ongoing.

The attack on Nayrab took place amid the ongoing Syrian Army advance in southern Idlib, south of the M4 highway. Government forces have cleared over a dozen of settlements from Turkish-led forces since the resumption of the offensive in the area on February 23. In the course of this effort, Syrian soldiers captured 3 vehicles and eliminated up to 10 militants. The advance is ongoing.

On the same day reports appeared that 13 Turkish soldiers were killed in airstrikes in the area of the Syrian Army operation in southern Idlib. According to pro-Turkish sources and Russian media, the incident happened somewhere near the villages of Kafr Nabl, Bara and Kansafra. According to Turkish authorities, 21 Turkish service member had died in the Greater Idlib operation so far. If the February 24 incident is confirmed, the number of casualties of Turkish forces in their Idlib adventurism will overcome 30.

The developments on the ground demonstrate that even with a direct Turkish involvement Idlib groups have not enough resources to oppose the Syrian Army advance across the region. So, while they were concentrating their efforts on Nayrab, their defense collapsed on another chunk of the frontline.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan confirmed his intention to meet with the leaders of Russia, France and Germany, on March 5 in Istanbul to discuss the situation in Idlib. This strange format, excluding Iran, another backer of the Damascus government and key player in the conflict, is likely seen by the Turkish leadership as a useful tool to make a ‘collective effort’ to pressure Russia over its strong support to the Syrian Army actions against terrorists. It also reveals that despite the recent decline of the EU involvement in the conflict, key EU states remain at least diplomatic supporters of terrorist factions operating in the country. At the same time, the initiative of the meeting itself demonstrates that Turkey is not so determined to turn its military threats against Syria into reality as it wants to demonstrate.

Firing her and having her take her own daughter out will only serve to enlighten other parents and create the necessary backlash to fuel even more parents’ decisions to homeschool their children. A poll of registered black voters shows support for President Trump has increased by 50 percent, and a large number are unhappy with the Democrat Party

The far-left Politico does its best to play down how potentially important this result is, but as former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer perfectly put it: “[T]he real headline should have been: ‘Trump Triples McCain Vote and Doubles Romney Vote Among Black Voters.'”

Referring to his former boss, George W. Bush, Fleischer adds, “[Trump] even runs ahead of Bush. Small inroads among overwhelmingly D[emocrat] black voters can go a long way.”

In 2016, Trump earned eight percent of the black vote (and 29 percent of the Hispanic vote).

In 2012, serial loser Mitt Romney only got six percent of the black vote and 28 percent of the Hispanic vote.

In 2008, John McCain could only earn 4 percent of the black vote, but did earn 31 percent of the Hispanic vote.

An important piece of context, though, is that both McCain and Romney were running against Barack Obama, the first black president.

Regardless, according to this BlackPAC poll, Trump’s support among registered black voters has jumped 50 percent since 2016, or from eight to 12 percent. This is exactly what Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) predicted just last week.

Is 12 percent enough to bottom out the Democrat Party as a national party? No. As reliant as Democrats are on the black vote, that number would have to climb closer to 25 percent before the U.S.S. Jackass started lowering the lifeboats. But…

This poll of 804 black registered voters (with a three point margin of error) does show a large reservoir of dissatisfaction.

During the ceremony local leaders expressed concern over the direction of the Democrat Party under the authority of Socialist Bernie Sanders.

The Mississippi Republican Party is welcoming some new members and all of them were elected public offices as Democrats or Independents in this most recent election cycle.

The Mississippi Republican Party Chairman says he doesn’t expect this will be the last time they are welcoming new members to the GOP.

“We have had a relentless focus on switching conservative Democrats over to the Republican party,” explained MSGOP Chairman Lucien Smith. “They recognize increasingly that there is only one party that represents the conservative values of our state and that is the Republican party.”

All eight of the latest party switchers were from Smith and Covington Counties and one District Attorney whose district covers those areas. But the conservation didn’t take long to expand to the national party ties.

“We are in a scenario in this country where you can choose to be a member of the party led by Donald J. Trump or you can choose to be a member of the socialist Democratic party led by Bernie Sanders,” noted Governor Tate Reeves.

Canadian Doctor Leaves China Without Entering Quarantine

The Canadian expert leading the World Health Organization (WHO) team in China responding to the new coronavirus departed Beijing without entering quarantine before landing in Geneva on Tuesday and going straight to a press conference, where he appeared without a mask.

Dr. Bruce Aylward is an infectious disease expert who led the organization’s team in China. The team traveled to different parts of the country, including Wuhan, the epicenter of the new virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease.

Aylward stopped in Beijing for a joint press conference with Chinese officials on Monday before departing and touching down in Switzerland, where the WHO is based.

Asked why he wasn’t wearing a mask, Aylward told reporters: “I don’t have COVID-19. I’m very low risk.”

Aylward said that his team had no contact with patients in China or even contact with people who were in contact with suspected or confirmed patients.

“I never had any exposures,” he said. “We are careful and we run careful.”

While in China, team members ate most of their meals in their hotel rooms. While on the job they ate at separate tables, Aylward said, recounting a lunch in the cafeteria at China’s Centers for Disease Control.

“You had to shout at each other,” he said.

The distance kept between people was two meters, or 6.5 feet. Experts say close contact means coming within six feet of those infected with the new virus.

David Brock Drops Millions Against Trump in Pivotal Swing States

The liberal super PAC American Bridge, led by Media Matters founder David Brock, dropped $4 million into anti-Trump advertisements in swing states as part of a plan to "kick Donald Trump's ass."

Brock's PAC reported purchasing $2.7 million worth of anti-Trump ads in Pennsylvania, a pivotal 2020 state that Trump carried by less than 1 point in the 2016 election. The PAC pushed another $1.3 million into Wisconsin, which Trump also won by less than 1 point. The expenditures, made between Feb. 19 and Feb. 21, follow $2.2 million the group already poured into Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan in November and December.

Democratic power brokers and activists have zeroed in on the region in hopes of chipping away at Trump's support among working-class voters. American Bridge plans to spend $10 million over three months to damage Trump in the Midwest. Brock, however, could be in a difficult position if Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), the current frontrunner in the Democratic primaries, wins the party's nomination. The liberal operative has called for a campaign to stop Sanders from clinching the nomination.

"We don't have to win all of these voters back," Sacha Haworth, American Bridge's political director, told Politico about the group's plans to appeal to blue-collar Midwesterners. "We just need to be able to peel off enough of [Trump's] supporters within this swath of voters to deny him the White House in 2020."

Brock's group last year planned a $50 million campaign to weaken Trump's support in the Midwest using "research, tracking, and rapid response capabilities." The campaign would include a "massive" television, digital, and radio advertisement push to convince voters in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan that Trump was hurting their interests.

"We're now set to leverage our expertise to launch the largest persuasion media effort we've ever undertaken with the goal of making Trump a one-term president," Bradley Beychok, president of American Bridge, said in a press release at the time. "Donald Trump turned his back on the voters who gave him a lifeline in 2016. We plan to cut it."

Brock mapped out a plan to defeat Trump before the president was even inaugurated. The longtime Clinton ally privately briefed 100 donors at a posh Florida resort in January 2017 on how he would "kick Donald Trump's ass" over the following four years. The liberal operative said he would use a constellation of organizations to release a steady flow of damaging information about the president. The Washington Free Beacon obtained confidential documents from the gathering that showed Brock's plans to push Trump out of office through impeachment or at the ballot box.

But now, with Sanders's ascent in the Democratic primary, Brock may face a dilemma. In April 2019, he spoke to other Democratic operatives about a potential anti-Sanders campaign if the Vermont senator started to run away with the nomination.

"There's a growing realization that Sanders could end up winning this thing, or certainly that he stays in so long that he damages the actual winner," Brock said. Such a campaign would need to start "sooner rather than later," he added.

American Bridge did not respond to a request for comment on the Trump campaign or the status of the anti-Sanders campaign.

Brock's efforts in the Midwest coincide with initiatives from other liberal megadonors and groups.

US Navy’s $2.6Bn Submarine Losing Its Stealth Coating After One Deployment

On February 20th, the USS Colorado, the US Navy’s new Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, came back from its maiden deployment and its stealth coating appears to be falling off.

Upon surfacing, the submarine was spotted with significant cracking along her hull, though she remained structurally sound and the damage appeared to only affect the Special Hull Treatment, an anechoic coating used to absorb sound waves.

This could be due to the long voyage, as well as that it was in harsher conditions – northern waters.

Regardless, given the cost of the technology, associated costs of applying the coatings and the drag caused by uneven surfaces, the significant wear is anything but ideal.

The US, British and Russian navies all struggle with the coating eventually coming off, particularly in colder waters, but the case of the Colorado is rather unique since it happened on its very first deployment.

The submarine costs approximately $2.6 billion.

The Virginia class fast-attack submarine USS Colorado (SSN 788), commanded by Capt. Jason Geddes, returned from a maiden deployment to its homeport at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut.

During the course of sailing approximately 39,000 nautical miles, the crew of Colorado executed the Chief of Naval Operation’s maritime strategy supporting national security interests and maritime security operations.

“I am humbled by the skill, hard work, and dedication these Colorado warriors displayed for our maiden deployment,” said Geddes. “It was an all-hands effort to include the love and support we enjoyed from our amazing families back home.”

Colorado was commissioned in March 2018 as the 15th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine to join the fleet. The crew demonstrated critical navigational and ship handling skills throughout the deployment.

“It’s truly impressive that after only a year-and-a-half after commissioning, our crew displayed the toughness and tenacity required to go to the far-reaching corners of the earth in support of our nation’s interests,” said Master Chief Electronics Technician (Radio) Larry Alger. “We’re ready to get back out to the fight if called on to do it tomorrow.”

Fast-attack submarines are multi-mission platforms enabling five of the six Navy maritime strategy core capabilities – sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence.

They are designed to excel in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare and mine warfare. Fast-attack submarines project power ashore with special operations forces and Tomahawk cruise missiles in the prevention or preparation of regional crises.

GOP lawmakers walk out after Oregon climate bill advances

February 24, 2020

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Republican senators slipped out of the Oregon State Capitol on Monday, preventing the state Senate from convening in an attempt to doom a bill aimed at stemming global warming.

The walkout was a repeat of action the GOP took last year to kill similar climate change legislation, a maneuver that prompted threats of having state police forcibly return lawmakers to the Statehouse.

The walkout threatens to derail the main legislation that Democrats had hoped to pass during a 35-day session: A bill to limit greenhouse gas emissions that threaten the planet.

Democratic Gov. Kate Brown accused the Republican lawmakers of “being against the Democratic process." The minority Republicans staged two walkouts last year, leading Senate President Peter Courtney to request Brown to order the state police to bring the missing lawmakers back. This time, though, Courtney said he won't involve the state police.

A few large trucks supporting the Republicans drove around the Oregon State Capitol, blowing their horns. After Courtney announced on the Senate floor that not enough senators were present to convene Monday's session, several people in an upper gallery clapped. Courtney said he would order police to expel them if they persisted.

A visibly angry Brown denounced the boycott as undemocratic.

Washington Post media columnist Margaret Sullivan suggested over the weekend that journalists should not be preoccupied with objectivity with their reporting as the country enters what she describes as the "Trump Unbound" era.

Sullivan began her column on Sunday by acknowledging the "adjustments" the media made under President Trump like labeling "a lie a lie" and offering fact-checking in real time, but sounded the alarm that such adaptions are not enough following Trump's acquittal in the impeachment trial.

"Call it Trump Unbound. In this new era, Trump has declared himself the nation’s chief law enforcement official. He has pardoned a raft of corrupt officials. He has exacted revenge on those he sees as his impeachment enemies," Sullivan explained. "In other words, we are in entirely new territory now. Should the news media continue as usual? Should it retain its own traditions as the nation slides toward autocracy? Should it treat the Trump presidency as pretty much the usual thing, with a few more fact-checks and the occasional use of a word like 'lie?' No. We need a new and better approach if we’re going to do our jobs adequately."

Sullivan, who was previously the public editor at The New York Times, listed things journalists can do, first being to "abandon neutrality-at-all-costs journalism" with something she calls "Fairness First."

"I’m talking about the kind of fairness that serves the public by describing the world we report on in honest and direct terms — not the phony kind of fairness that tries to duck out of difficult decisions by giving 'both sides' of an argument equal time, regardless of their truth or merit," Sullivan elaborated.

She then stressed that journalists "need to be far more direct" with how their stories are presented, later complaining," We simply are not getting across the big picture or the urgency" and knocking journalists "fear" of being "charged with bias."

"In this new era, my prescription is less false equivalence, more high-impact language and more willingness to take a stand for democracy. With Trump unbound, the news media need to change. Yes, radically. The stakes are too high not to," Sullivan concluded

Conservative NewsBusters contributing writer PJ Gladnick slammed her "rant," declaring the country has "entered a Media Unhinged era."

"Obviously, our media do not fear being charged with bias. They overflow with bias. Sullivan's just unhappy that it's just not working. Trump is rising in the polls, even as the press doubles down on the negativity. They've yelled themselves hoarse, and now they're staring at the growing prospect of Four More Years," Gladnick wrote.

Patton Oswalt Reveals Wife Died Due to Prescription Medications and Undiagnosed Heart Condition

Patton Oswalt has revealed his wife Michelle’s cause of death, nearly one year since she died unexpectedly in her sleep at age 46.

“We learned today the combination of drugs in Michelle’s system, along with a condition we were unaware of, proved lethal,” the actor and comedian wrote in a statement to the Associated Press on Friday.

Oswalt also explained that the couple, who wed in 2005, had “no idea” she had a condition that caused blockages in her arteries.

The blockages, combined with her taking the medications Adderall, Xanax and the pain medication fentanyl, caused the mother of one’s death in April 2016, Oswalt said.

McNamara’s cause of death remains listed as pending, Los Angeles coroner’s Lt. David Smith confirmed to AP.

In an October interview with The New York Times, Oswalt recounted the last night he had with his wife, speculating that she may have accidentally overdosed.

McNamara, who was writing a book about a serial rapist and killer at the time, was working long days and nights and was unable to sleep due to anxiety and nightmares that kept her up at night.

So worried about her health, Oswalt suggested she take a night to “sleep until you wake up.” On April 21, McNamara took some Xanax and went to sleep, but never woke up.

The next morning, Oswalt remembered waking up early to get their 7-year-old daughter Alice dressed, packed and off to school. On the way home, he picked up an Americano coffee and left it on McNamara’s bedside table — around 9:40 a.m., he recalled.

Hours later, he checked to see if his wife was up yet. She was still in bed — not breathing. The paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. While a cause of death was not declared by the coroner’s office at the time, Oswalt said he believed the Xanax was to blame.

In December, the father of one penned an emotional essay for GQ about his first year as a single parent.

“This is my first time being a single father. I’ve missed forms for school. I’ve forgotten to stock the fridge with food she likes. I’ve run out of socks for her. I’ve run out of socks for me. It sucked and it was a hassle every time, but the world kept turning. I said, ‘Whoops, my bad,’ and fixed it and kept stumbling forward,” Oswalt wrote.

“I’m going to keep going forward, looking stupid and clumsy and inexperienced at first, then eventually getting it, until the next jolt comes, and the next floor drops out from under me, until there are no more floors.”

Many American technology companies, from Intel to Google to Microsoft, have merged with several Unit 8200-connected start-ups in recent years and have been moving many key jobs and operations to Israel with backing from key Republican donors like Paul Singer.

HOUSTON, Texas (News Release) – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas the ACLU National filed a lawsuit against seven East Texas cities challenging the ordinances that prohibit abortion providers and advocates from operating within their city limits.

The cities being sued are Waskom, Naples, Joaquin, Tenaha, Rusk, Wells, and Gary.

The ACLU is representing two organizations, Lilith Fund and Texas Equal Access Fund (TEA Fund). Both organizations support people who need abortions and advocate for the right to access abortion.

The lawsuit claims that the ordinances violate their right to free expression and association protected under the First Amendment.

“We’re not going to cave, we will stand and fight and show them (ACLU) what being a Texan is all about,” said Mark Lee Dickson is a statement who represents Right to Life.

“These ordinances are unconstitutional,” said Anjali Salvador, staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas. “Abortion is legal in every state and city in the country, and cities cannot punish pro-abortion organizations for carrying out their important work – especially when they do so in a way that violates their First Amendment rights.”

“These anti-abortion ordinances are part of a nationwide attack on abortion access,” said Brigitte Amiri, deputy director of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project. “Whether they are bans on abortion, attempts to close clinics, or moves to silence people who support abortion access, the ACLU will fight against these unconstitutional and cruel measures.”

On June 22, 2019, Waskom became the first city in Texas to pass an ordinance becoming a ‘Sanctuary City for the Unborn.’ Soon after, six other East Texas cities followed suit. The ordinances state that if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned, abortion will be unlawful within the cities. In addition, the ordinances named eight reproductive rights organizations as “criminal organizations” and declared it unlawful for them to “operate within” the cities including several that do not perform abortions.

“A major part of our work is to make sure every Texan knows their rights and can find legitimate, fact-based information about getting an abortion – regardless of income or zip code,” said Amanda Beatriz Williams, executive director of Lilith Fund. “These would-be abortion bans are deliberately designed to confuse people about their rights and push safe abortion care further out of reach. By joining this lawsuit, we’re fighting back against the lies and sending a message that all Texas communities deserve the rights, resources, and information they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families.”

“These extreme ordinances are a tactic for abortion opponents to score political points by infringing on our ability to educate and activate communities about their rights and the resources available to them,” said Kamyon Connor, executive director for Texas Equal Access Fund. “Access to reproductive care including abortion, which is still legal, allows individuals and families to receive the support needed to thrive in our state. Texas Equal Access Fund is proud to help people access abortion care and we will fight to protect our ability to continue doing this necessary work.”

Anti-abortion activists traveled to each of these cities to convince city officials to enact these ordinances. In the last year, the ACLU has blocked unconstitutional abortion bans and restrictions in other states.

The suit is being brought by the ACLU of Texas, the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, and the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas

In Disney theme parks, the utilidor system is a system of some of the world's largest utility tunnels, mainly for Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida.

The utilidors, short for utility corridors, are a part of Disney's "backstage" (behind-the-scenes) area. They allow Disney employees ("cast members") to perform park support operations, such as trash removal, and for costumed characters to quickly reach their destinations on the surface out of the sight of guests to avoid ruining the illusion that is being created.

These tunnels were first built for Magic Kingdom. Smaller utilidor systems are built under the central section of Epcot's Future World, primarily beneath Spaceship Earth and Innoventions, and formerly at Pleasure Island.

Disneyland, in California, also has a small utilidor system running throughout Tomorrowland.

I remember some years ago, there was a scandal when young people said that they had been kidnapped at Disney World, and held down in the Tunnels. They described that they were held in many rooms down there.

So many people came forward that Disney closed down the Tunnels, but left the outermost room open. Disney invited the Press to look at the remaining open room at the opening of the tunnels, to show that there's nothing there.

Bob Iger will step down as Disney CEO and assume the role of executive chairman, Disney announced on Tuesday.

Bob Chapek, who most recently served as chairman of Disney parks, experiences and products, will assume the role of CEO, effective immediately, Disney announced. Chapek will continue to report to Iger and be appointed to the board of directors at a later date.

Shares of Disney fell about 2.5% after hours.

In an interview with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin, Iger said the reporting structure is a way to ensure a smooth transition.

“We’re not concerned at all about creating any confusion,” Iger said of the arrangement.

Iger will remain executive chairman of Disney through the end of 2021, according to the company. He has been instrumental in making Disney a media powerhouse with key acquisitions and content plays. He launched Disney+, immediately making Disney a popular streaming service provider. Disney said the service had 26.5 million paying subscribers during the first quarter of 2020 after launching in November.

Iger has beefed up Disney’s already-strong content library with several important acquisitions. Most recently, he ushered through Disney’s $71 billion acquisition of Fox’s entertainment business, which would add even more content to its streaming library. Earlier he added Star Wars and Marvel movies through its acquisitions of Lucasfilm and Marvel Entertainment, each for about $4 billion. Shortly into his tenure as CEO, Iger announced Disney’s $7.4 billion acquisition of Pixar Animation Studios, which made popular films like “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo” before becoming part of Disney.

Iger also launched a theme park in Shanghai,

further expanding Disney’s footprint across the globe and gaining 11 million visitors in its first year.

“With the successful launch of Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is the optimal time to transition to a new CEO,” Iger said in a statement.

Iger had been planning his succession for a while, saying at Disney’s investor day last year that “2021 will be the time for me to finally step down.”

Iger has been CEO of Disney since 2005. He’s pushed back his retirement several times in recent years, and Tuesday’s succession announcement came as a surprise.

On a call with investors shortly after the announcement, Iger addressed the timing of his announcement, which happened 22 months before he was expected to retire at the end of 2021. Iger said he decided to step down now because he wanted to focus on the creative side now that major projects like the Fox merger and launch of Disney+ were behind him. Iger said he would be able to help transition Chapek into the role while serving as executive chairman.

“With everything else falling into place, the time seemed right,” Iger said.

Chapek told investors that he has already had some exposure to the media and direct-to-consumer businesses in which he has not been directly involved in the past because Iger has encouraged his direct reports to interact.

“While I certainly have an opportunity to immerse myself more inside those media businesses, I have a bit of fluency, just like my peers have some fluency in our business,” Chapek said.

As the novel coronavirus continues to spread around the globe, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday accused the governments of China and Iran of censoring information about the outbreaks in their countries and putting the rest of the world at greater risk of its spread.

The top U.S. diplomat's sharp tone towards Beijing was matched by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, who told Congress on Tuesday that the world is not getting reliable data out of China on issues like mortality rates.

"Censorship. It can have deadly consequences," Pompeo said Tuesday at the State Department. "Had China permitted its own and foreign journalists and medical personnel to speak and investigate freely, Chinese officials and other nations would have been far better prepared to address the challenge."

The flow of accurate information out of China, he added, is critical to assisting not just the Chinese people, but also "citizens across the world." He called on all governments to "tell the truth about coronavirus and cooperate with international aid organizations."

The agency tweeted Tuesday evening that Americans should think about getting ready.

"Now is the time for US businesses, hospitals, and communities to begin preparing for the possible spread of #COVID19," it wrote, referring to the name the World Health Organization has given the novel coronavirus. "CDC continues to work with business, education & healthcare sectors, encouraging employers to be prepared."

Messonnier said her agency wants people to understand their lives might be disrupted.

"We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare in the expectation that this could be bad," she said.

She said CDC officials have been saying for weeks that while they hope the spread won't be severe in the United States, they are planning as if it could be.

"The data over the last week, and the spread in other countries, has certainly raised our level of concern and raised our level of expectation" of community spread, she said.

The CDC still doesn't know what that will look like, she added. Community spread could be reasonably mild or very severe.

Americans should also talk to employers about working online and talk to doctor's offices about telehealth, the CDC says.

Messonnier said she talked her family and told them that while they are not at risk right now, they should plan for what to do if their lives were significanly impacted. She said she called the children's school district about what would happen if schools need to close.

The tactical success of the Turkish Army and Turkish-backed al-Qaeda groups in Nayrab in eastern Idlib turned to be a total disaster for Turkish-led forces in the southern part of the province.

Erdogan Forces Recaptured Nayrab, But Lost Another Dozen Of Villages To Syrian Army

On February 24 morning, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other Idlib groups supported by the Turkish Army launched a new attempt to capture the village of Nayrab from the Syrian Army. Turkish-backed rebels bedecked with ISIS insignias once again reached the vicinity of the village, but were forced to retreat under strikes from the Syrian Army and the Russian Aerospace Forces. Pro-Turkish sources complained that ‘regime troops’ are using mines, road blocks, fortifications and even trenches to protect their positions. The devilry of the Assad regime has no bounds.

In the evening, Turkish-led forces carried out a second attack on Nayrab entering its eastern part and engaging army troops in a series of clashes. The fighting in the area continued overnight and by February 25 Idlib groups have established control of at least a half of the town. Pro-Turkish sources claim that entire Nayrab is in the hands of Turkish-led forces. Pro-government sources say that the lashes are ongoing.

(CNN)Allegations of sexual and/or physical abuse leveled against nine former employees at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Connecticut, have been found "credible," according to an independent investigation conducted at the school's request.

In an investigative report released last week, the 203-year-old institution published findings that the staff members engaged in "multiple instances of past sexual abuse, and physical abuse and/or corporal punishment from the 1950s through the 1980s."

"As a community, we are devastated," the school's executive director, Jeffrey Bravin, and president of the board of directors, Catherine Burns, said in a joint statement presenting the findings.

"The revelations exposed during this investigation are heartbreaking, and we are stunned by the realization that former trusted members of the ASD family abused their power to take advantage of innocent, vulnerable children in their care."

The FBI and NYPD have raided the New York offices of fashion exec Peter Nygard as part of a sex trafficking investigation - the fourth such probe of the mogul, who is accused of drugging and raping girls on his Bahamas estate.

Six vans full of agents from the FBI and NYPD descended on Nygard’s Times Square headquarters on Tuesday morning to gather evidence, according to two officers who spoke to the New York Times following the raid. The flamboyant Canadian businessman has been under investigation for allegedly trafficking underage girls by a joint child-exploitation task force comprised of state and federal law enforcement for at least five months. 

The criminal probe is separate from a lawsuit filed earlier this month by 10 women alleging Nygard drugged and raped them when they were 14 or 15 years old on his estate in the Bahamas, though at least four of the women involved in that lawsuit have been interviewed by the task force. The suit charges Nygard ran a “sex trafficking ring,” luring “young, impressionable, and often impoverished children and women” to his home by dangling cash and promises of successful modeling careers. 

Nygard, the suit claims, threw “pamper parties” on his palatial Bahamas estate, where he spiked girls’ drinks with Rohypnol and raped them. The parties were said to be extravagant affairs featuring massages and jet-ski rides, and the estate itself - with a fake Mayan temple, a disco with a stripper pole, and showy animal sculptures - is reminiscent of Jeffrey Epstein’s Lolita Island. In fact, Nygard is a friend of Epstein’s pal Prince Andrew, and like both men is known for being perpetually surrounded with a bevy of attractive young women. He allegedly kept a database with details about each guest going back to 1987 to help him decide who to prey on.

The 78-year-old mogul denies the charges, blaming his neighbor, hedge-fund billionaire Louis Bacon, who hired his own private detectives to investigate Nygard after a pitched battle between the two that has spanned 25 lawsuits across five jurisdictions and cost both tens of millions of dollars. It has also involved the two flinging wild accusations - of insider trading, Ku Klux Klan membership, murder plots, and now raping teen girls.

But this is not the first time Nygard has found himself the target of a sex trafficking probe. The FBI was investigating him in 2015 and 2017, while the Department of Homeland Security spent nine months looking into him in 2016, though nothing came of any of those probes. The women in the lawsuit all hail from the Bahamas except one, and remain anonymous. Nine women in Canada and the US have also accused him of sexual harassment or assault over the years. The Times spoke with nine women not involved in the lawsuit who claim Nygard had touched them inappropriately, made unwanted advances, or, in at least two cases, raped them.

Counterinsurgents must make every effort to reinforce the legitimacy of the HN government in the eyes of the people. Counterinsurgents must understand that the military instrument is only one part of a comprehensive approach for successful COIN Counterinsurgents must also understand the core grievances, drivers of conflict, and friction points between different groups. Cultural awareness facilitates accurate anticipation of the population’s perception of COIN operations. These perceptions can determine the success or failure of COIN operations.

The military contribution to countering insurgency, while vital, is not as important as political efforts for long-term success. Military efforts are especially important initially to gain security. The national strategy, military strategy, and theater strategy play key roles in determining COIN strategic context. There are three possible general strategic settings for US involvement in COIN: assisting a functioning government as part of FID, as an adjunct to US major combat operations, or US operations in an ungoverned area.

The potential global and regional scope of contemporary insurgency has added to the complexity and therefore the challenge of conducting COIN. This challenge requires a global or regional COIN strategic approach for success. However, political objectives must guide the military’s approach. Effective COIN is shaped by timely, specific, and reliable intelligence, gathered and analyzed at all levels and disseminated throughout the force. Reporting by units, members of the country team, and information derived from interactions with civilian agencies is often of equal or greater importance than reporting by specialized intelligence assets.

While it may be required to kill or capture insurgents, it is more effective in the long run to separate an insurgency from the population and its resources, thus letting it die. Confrontational military action, in exclusion is counterproductive in most cases; it risks generating popular resentment, creating martyrs that motivate new recruits, and producing cycles of revenge.

To establish legitimacy, commanders transition security activities from military operations to law enforcement as quickly as feasible. When insurgents are seen as criminals, they often lose public support.

Insurgencies are protracted by nature, and history demonstrates that they often last for years or even decades. Thus, COIN normally demands considerable expenditures of time and resources, especially if they must be conducted simultaneously with conventional operations in a protracted war combining traditional and IW.

To limit discontent and build support, the HN government and any counterinsurgents assisting it create and maintain a realistic set of expectations among the populace, friendly military forces, and the international community. Information operations (IO), particularly PSYOP and the related activities of public affairs (PA) and civil-military operations (CMO), are key tools to accomplish this.

Even precise and tailored force must be executed legitimately and with consideration for consequent effects. An operation that kills five insurgents is counterproductive if collateral damage leads to the recruitment of fifty more insurgents.

An effective counterinsurgent force is a learning organization. Insurgents constantly shift between military and political phases and tactics. Every unit needs to be able to make observations, draw and apply lessons, and assess results.

Successful COIN is normally conducted with decentralized execution based upon centralized vision and orders that include clear and concise rules for the use of force and rules of engagement.

US forces committed to supporting COIN are there to assist a HN government. The long-term goal is to leave a government able to stand by itself, which is also normally the goal even if the US begins COIN in an area that does not have a HN government. US forces and agencies can help, but HN elements must accept responsibilities to achieve real victory.

Unified action includes a “whole-of-government” or “comprehensive approach” that employs all instruments of national power. Achieving unity of effort is challenging in COIN due to the normally complex OE and its many potential actors—friendly, neutral, and adversarial. The military contribution to COIN must be coordinated with the activities of US Government (USG) interagency partners, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), regional organizations, the operations of multinational forces, and activities of various HN agencies to be successful. The joint military contribution is essential to provide security that enables other COIN efforts. Joint forces contribute to unified action through unity of command and a solid command and control architecture that integrates strategic, operational, and tactical COIN.

When a HN is dealing with an insurgency and the US supports the HN, COIN is one aspect of a larger FID mission. Internal defense and development (IDAD) is the HN’s plan that US FID supports; the HN does not support the US FID plan. The purpose of the IDAD strategy is to promote HN growth and its ability to protect itself from subversion, lawlessness, and insurgency.

Civil-military integration mechanisms fall into two general areas: those that are located outside of the theater and those that are located in theater.

Civil-military mechanisms in the US include the National Security Council and policy operations groups.

Civil-military integration mechanisms in theater may include: joint interagency coordination group, US country team, advance civilian team, executive steering group, regional authority, civil-military coordination board, joint civil-military operations task force, national-level governmental assistance teams, provincial reconstruction teams, civil-military operations centers, and joint interagency task force.

Unity of command should extend to all military forces engaged in COIN—US, HN, and other multinational

Public opinion, perceptions, media, public information, and rumors influence how the populace perceives the HN legitimacy. PA shapes the information environment through public information activities and facilitates media access to preempt, neutralize, or counter adversary disinformation efforts.

Embedded media representatives experience the joint force perspective of operations in the COIN environment. Commanders may hold periodic press conferences to explain operations and provide transparency to the people most affected by COIN efforts. However, counterinsurgents must strive to avoid the perception of attempting to manipulate the population or media. Even the slightest appearance of impropriety can undermine the credibility of the COIN force and HN legitimacy.

While detainees can be vital sources of information, how counterinsurgents treat captured insurgents has immense potential impact on insurgent morale, retention, and recruitment. Humane and just treatment may afford counterinsurgents many short-term opportunities as well as potentially damaging insurgent recruitment. Abuse may foster resentment and hatred; offering the enemy an opportunity for propaganda and assist potential insurgent recruitment and support.

National defense and internal security are the traditional cornerstones of state sovereignty. Security is essential to legitimate governance and participation, effective rule of

law, and sustained economic development. Security sector reform (SSR) aims to provide an effective and legitimate public service that is transparent, accountable to civilian authority, and responsive to the needs of the public. SSR must be part of any COIN plan, including the IDAD strategy, from the outset.

The objective of the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration process is to contribute to security and stability in post-conflict environments so that recovery and development can begin. Disarmament is the collection, documentation, control, and disposal of small arms, ammunition, explosives, and light and heavy weapons of former insurgents and the population. Demobilization is the process of transitioning a conflict or wartime military establishment and defense-based civilian economy to a peacetime configuration while maintaining national security and economic vitality. Demobilization for COIN normally involves the controlled discharge of active combatants from paramilitary groups, militias, and insurgent forces that have stopped fighting. Reintegration is the process through which former combatants, belligerents, and dislocated civilians receive amnesty, reenter civil society, gain sustainable employment, and become contributing members of the local population.

Bahrain orders all schools & kindergartens SHUT DOWN for 2 weeks as coronavirus cases soar

Bahraini students will be skipping classes due to a perfectly valid reason for the next two weeks, after the country’s education ministry ordered schools and nurseries to be temporarily closed amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

State-run as well as private kindergartens and schools in Bahrain will shut their doors for two weeks starting Wednesday, the Gulf monarchy's authorities announced on Tuesday, after the 9 new cases of the deadly COVID-19 were reported, bringing the total number to 17.

All of the new cases so far have been linked to Iran. The authorities said that those infected traveled from the Islamic Republic to Bahrain either through Dubai or the United Arab Emirates.

“The nine new registered cases were detected among four female Bahraini nationals, three male Bahraini nationals, and two female Saudi nationals, all arriving from Iran via Dubai or Sharjah.”

The patients were taken for treatment to Ibrahim Khalil Kano Health Centre in Manama, the kingdom’s second largest city.

With the coronavirus outbreak spreading to the Middle East, Bahrain stepped up screening procedures at the airports, and on Tuesday moved to suspend flights from Dubai International Airport and Sharjah International Airport in the UAE for the next 48 hours.

The health authorities said that shutdown of schools was made as a precaution. One of the confirmed cases is a bus driver who arrived from Iran on February 21 and it was not until a few days later that he showed the flu-like symptoms typical for the coronavirus, the ministry said. The man had already dropped off children at two schools and one kindergarten by that time, prompting the authorities to test all the children who took the bus and their families.

Iran is currently experiences the deadliest outbreak of the novel coronavirus outside China, with the death toll rising to 15 by Tuesday. Nearly 100 people have been infected, according to the state media.
