A Dutch appeals court order upholding an international arbitration award asking Russia to pay the shareholders of Moscow-based former oil giant Yukos $50 billion in compensation is seen as a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The court order that upturned a Hague district court’s decision annulling the tribunal decision brings back to focus the chequered career of oil baron Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who fell foul of Putin and went to jail.

The case arose after Yukos was declared bankrupt and merged with the state-controlled Rosneft following tax evasion charges amounting to $27 billion in 2006. As Yukos chief executive, Khodorkovsky, who Forbes magazine once called the world’s 16th richest man, landed in jail. He was incarcerated for 10 years on charges of tax evasion and theft until Putin granted him clemency in 2003.

Putin granted Khodorkovsry clemency on the ground of mother's illness, following which he flew to Germany where he vowed to stay out of politics. He said he would not return to Russia unless he was sure he would be a free person.

The appeals court order of Feb. 18 overturned a 2016 ruling by a Hague district court that canceled the compensation order on the grounds that the Permanent Court of Arbitration lacked the jurisdiction as the case was based on an energy treaty that Russia had signed but not ratified, according to a report on Radio Free Europe website. Russia's Justice Ministry said it will appeal the appellate court’s decision, which ruled that the 2016 decision quashing the arbitration decision “was not correct." The arbitration tribunal had ruled that Moscow seized Yukos control in 2003 by saddling the company with massive tax claims.

MOSCOW, February 19. /TASS/. Trafigura will meet requirements of the US Treasury Department that imposed sanctions on Rosneft Trading within 90 days provided, the Swiss-based trader said in a comment to TASS on Wednesday.

"Trafigura is aware of the addition by the US authorities of certain Rosneft entities to the Venezuela related designations and the associated general license. Trafigura complies with all applicable sanctions and will comply with the requirements of these latest rules within the wind-down timeline that has been set by the general license," a company’s spokesperson said.

3 Men Found Murdered Near California Cemetery, Sheriff says it ‘Was a Message’

The bodies of three men have been found dead near a cemetery in California, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

They were positively identified as Jaime Covarrubias Espindola, 50, Jose Maria Aguilar-Espejel, 38, and Rodrigo Aguilar-Espejel, 28, the sheriff’s department said in a tweet on Tuesday.

All three were residents of the city of Perris, Sheriff Chad Bianco said in a news conference Tuesday.

The men are all believed to have been killed at the Perris Valley Cemetery, and police are looking into reports that the deaths might be gang or cartel related, Bianco said.

“Three people killed at the same time, that was a message for something,” Bianco said. “It’s certainly not the norm.” The sheriff did not say how the men were killed, but said police are looking into why the men were there and who was with them.

The investigation is still ongoing.

In Africa, Pompeo Touts Billions of Dollars in Trade to Help ‘Westernize’ Continent

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia—As the Trump administration works to combat China's growing influence across Africa, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told business leaders that President Donald Trump was willing to commit billions in U.S. trade and aid dollars to further African development.

Speaking Wednesday in Ethiopia before the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Pompeo touted the influx of billions of dollars in aid from the United States to Africa in what many see as a bid to erode China's dominance across the region.

However, Pompeo's tour across three developing African countries—Senegal, Angola, and Ethiopia—has not been without contention. As these countries struggle to shake off years of authoritarian rule, terrorism and violence have stymied progress and threaten to erode hard-fought gains in government and economic reform initiatives.

Mounting concerns across the continent that the United States will soon pull its forces from critical battles against terrorists and other militant groups also have complicated Pompeo's high-level meetings in the region. With the Trump administration seeking to scale back its military footprint across the globe, African leaders worry they will lose a key Western ally.

Pompeo addressed both concerns as he met with high-ranking officials from local governments and the African Union, an alliance of 55 African nations. The secretary promised continued security assistance and private partnerships with U.S. corporations across various sectors.

Speaking to young business leaders at UNECA, Pompeo reminded the crowd that his boss loves a good business deal.

"The Trump administration wants these trade ties to continue, and expand. If there's one thing you should know about our president—my boss—you should know he loves deals," Pompeo said. "He wants more to happen between the U.S. and the nations of Africa. That's why the United States launched our new Development Finance Corporation last month. Our goal is to catalyze private-sector investment in developing countries, focusing heavily on priority areas like energy, agriculture, and infrastructure. Much of its $60 billion finance capacity will help Africa."

For Pompeo and the State Department, the pathway to success in Africa is investment and trade—not necessarily U.S. aid dollars.

"Effective foreign aid can help to alleviate the problem, but can't solve it," Pompeo said. "Government spending won't either. Centralized planning hasn't worked—look at the failed socialist experiments of years past in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and right here in Ethiopia. Even now, South Africa is debating an amendment to permit the expropriation of private property without compensation. That would be disastrous for that economy and the South African people. Socialist schemes haven't economically liberated this continent's poorest."

Pompeo added that nationwide government reforms, including moving to a more Western model of capitalism, can push Africa into greater prosperity—and potentially help the United States, in turn, reduce China's financial grip on the continent.

This is all according to security expert Jared Kellogg, who was brought in by long-standing ranch manager Brice Gordon to improve security and set up a camera system at the main house and ‘cowboy village’.

Kevin Paul, 41, was present when an Epsom police officer was shot and killed in 1997 and he has a subsequent history of weapons and drug possession, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Jeffrey White said.

“He rises to that level,” White said about the reward. “He is not your average, everyday run-of-the mill fugitive.”

White said Paul is likely outside of New Hampshire.

Meanwhile, authorities said Paul had been residing at a sober living home at 151 Parkview St., a residential area just off South Willow Street. He moved there after living at a recovery house at 329 Lake Ave. in the center city.

Recovery houses

The owner of RJM House would not answer questions about whether the houses are permitted by the city, how many people live in each one and whether RJM is a for-profit or nonprofit organization.

But he said the homes provide a supportive environment for men in recovery, and hundreds have gotten their lives together, found a job or gone to school and returned to society.

“We do very powerful things in the community for our men. We give back constantly,” said Andrew Moser, who said he is in long-term recovery and invested his own resources to acquire and establish the homes.

He said the homes accept people from all walks of life.

Manchester police announced their search for Paul the day after the Manchester Zoning Board of Adjustment rejected a variance for a sober living home on Russell Street in the North End. And a committee of aldermen was scheduled to consider zoning ordinances that govern recovery homes on Tuesday night.

City officials have wrestled with the number of recovery homes operating in the city. Last month, Fire Chief Dan Goonan said there are as many as 60 in the city, but he has resisted requests to disclose the addresses.

Mayor Joyce Craig has asked the Legislature to implement a mandatory registration and regulation program for recovery homes.

The Legislature is currently considering a voluntary program. In written testimony to a Senate committee, Craig said that estimates range from 50 to 150 houses in the city.

On Tuesday, the Union Leader filed a Right to Know request for Fire Department information about recovery houses. It has also asked the Adult Parole Board for any list it has of sober living houses where parolees are sent to live.

Assistant US Attorney Chris Niewoehner told jurors that they shouldn’t be concerned whether Blagojevich actually managed to trade the appointment to President Obama’s old Senate seat for an ambassadorship or a Cabinet post or any money — only that he made the effort.

“You don’t have to be a successful criminal to be a criminal,” he said.

Nor, he said, should jurors be concerned that they did not hear Blagojevich outright tell those he is accused of shaking down for money what he was doing.

For example, of allegations that Blagojevich was trying to elicit campaign donations from businessman Raghuveer Nayak in exchange for appointing Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. to the Senate seat, he said if the governor never specifically said the appointment was tied to the contributions, he didn’t need to.

“You do not have to say to Raghu Nayak, ‘I will give you the US Senate seat if you give me a million dollars.’ It’s the message that’s important, not the specific words,” Niewoehner said.

Anon note: This story is classic Rhode Island Corruption.

38 Studios was a video game company started by ex Red Sox pitcher Kurt Schilling of the bloody sock saga. As far as I can understand the details, Schilling was convinced to move his fledgling business to Rhode Island and was provided an incentive of $75 million "moral" bond provided by RI Commerce Co. This is a quasi-private economic development company that doles out tax payer money to corrupt businesses, please note that the local Federal Judge Willian Smith's wife Christine works there in a capacity for tech and manufacturing but yet her education is a Georgetown history degree. Huh. There was never a referendum vote for this bond as is otherwise required in RI.

Naturally, just prior to the bond coming due, the business failed and everybody started screaming and no one took the blame.

There was a huge dragged out court case, undocumented interviews by state police, and hundreds of articles and news stories of misinformation and indignant claims by public officials who would immediately file injunctions to stop the very disclosures that they were advocating for publicly; including especially by the AG and the Governor. The Court meanwhile was very accommodating in keeping all files sealed (or destroyed) and the Hearings door closed. Huge teams of lawyers on both sides paid for by taxpayers frolicked in this litigious cess pond for years.

It has never been revealed how the money was distributed, the Court claimed victory and got awards of part of the money from insurance and the assessing bank. RI Commerce Co. was fined (remember they get and spend tax payer money). The implication is that this award goes back to taxpayers but lo, its via a judicial fund and the files are sealed in what is essentially a massive boondoggle.

Millions of dollars, nearly all of it taxpayer money was thieved in a calculated racketeering conspiracy involving the Rhode Island Judiciary, the RI Commerce Co and a fuckload of lawyers.

They continue to do similar actions against scores of other businesses in the state, using the RI Commerce Co to bring in corrupt out of state players when they don't have enough local hapless litigants on the "business court" civil calendar. In addition to whole businesses outright, the RI Courts have recklessly stolen the pensions of the firefighters, hospitals, countless state and private pensioners, all in the name of "fiduciary responsibility" and justice.

The Rhode Island Supreme Court affirmed a Superior Court decision that blocked the release of the 38 Studio grand jury documents.

The court ruled Wednesday, “Governor Gina M. Raimondo appealed from a judgment of the Superior Court denying her petition to disclose all materials from the grand jury that investigated the state’s 38 Studios bond deal because (1) it did not have the authority to disclose grand jury materials outside of the enumerated disclosures it is permitted to make under Rule 6(e) of the Superior Court Rules of Criminal Procedure; (2) the Governor did not demonstrate a particularized need for the information requested; and (3) policy factors did not favor disclosure. The Governor argued that the Superior Court has inherent authority to release such information outside of Rule 6(e), as some federal courts have held when applying the rule’s federal counterpart.”

Further the court wrote, “The Supreme Court, after determining that, despite the Governor’s inability to satisfy the traditional standing requirement, it would consider the case because of the considerable public interest, disagreed with the Governor’s arguments and held that: There is no inherent authority in the Superior Court to disclose grand jury materials beyond that which is permitted by the Superior Court Rules of Criminal Procedure. The Court also determined that, even had the Court held otherwise, it would have been well within the discretion of the Superior Court to deny the Governor’s petition because the relevant cases on which the Governor relied in support of disclosure involved circumstances so unlike those presented in this case.”

The decision by the Supreme Court functionally ends a ten-year saga and more than seven years of near-constant litigation about the failed video gaming company founded by former Red Sox great Curt Schilling.

Blagojevich’s lawyers allege that Tony Rezko admitted to violating the law by personally contributing “a large sum of cash” to a public official’s campaign,

which the Blagojevich people say is Obama.

The lawyers claim that Obama may not have been telling the truth when he said Rezko never relayed a request from a lobbyist to hold a fundraiser for Obama in exchange for favorable legislative action (Obama, however, refused to agree to the offer, Rezko allegedly says).

They also claim that Obama allegedly lied when he said he didn’t have any conversations with Rezko about a casino license…

In a recent in camera proceeding, the government tendered a three paragraph letter indicating that Rezko “has stated in interviews with the government that he engaged in election law violations by personally contributing a large sum of cash to the campaign of a public official who is not Rod Blagojevich. … Further, the public official denies being aware of cash contributions to his campaign by Rezko or others and denies having conversations with Rezko related to cash contributions.

Rezko has also stated in interviews with the government that he believed he transmitted a quid pro quo offer from a lobbyist to the public official, whereby the lobbyist would hold a fundraiser for the official in exchange for favorable official action, but that the public official rejected the offer. The public official denies any such conversation.

In addition, Rezko has stated to the government that he and the public official had certain conversations about gaming legislation and administration, which the public official denies having had.

President Obama is the only one who can testify as to the veracity of Mr. Rezko’s allegations above.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg filed for bankruptcy Wednesday, six months after disclosing it had paid millions of dollars to people sexually abused as children by its clerics.

The diocese joins at least 20 others across the United States in seeking protection from creditors through the federal bankruptcy system, but it is the first diocese in Pennsylvania to take such a step.

In August, the diocese said it paid 106 people a total of just over $12 million to compensate for claims of sexual abuse they suffered as children from its clerics, deacons and seminarians. Six others did not accept payment offers from the diocese.

The filing in Harrisburg federal bankruptcy court said the diocese “faces potentially significant exposure from remaining claimants" and wants Chapter 11 reorganization to provide money for unresolved claims and perform its ministry and other operations.

The diocese serves about 250,000 Catholics in 89 parishes, spanning 15 counties.

Florida can’t bar felons from voting over fines and fees, court rules

A federal appeals court ruled that Florida cannot ban felons from registering to vote if they have failed to pay fines and fees related to their cases if they have already served their time. A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a preliminary injunction that a Florida law allowing most felons to vote constituted an unfair poll tax that would disenfranchise many of them, according to the Associated Press.

The law, Amendment 4, was overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2018. Still, the Republican-led legislature passed a law requiring felons to first pay any fines or fees associated with their cases for their sentences to be considered complete. The court said Wednesday that the requirement “punishes those who cannot pay more harshly than those who can — and does so by continuing to deny them access to the ballot box.” It also ruled that the requirement violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.

“We disagree with the ruling,” said Helen Ferre, a spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. More than 1.5 million felons who have completed their sentences could regain their voting rights under Amendment 4. A University of Florida study found about 80% of released felons have not paid off their fines.

Ex-senator appointed to Obama seat says Rod Blagojevich ‘absolutely’ deserved to have sentence commuted

The man whom Rod Blagojevich appointed to Barack Obama’s Senate seat supports President Trump’s commutation of the former Illinois governor’s prison sentence. “Absolutely. The governor had served his time for the crime he was accused of and convicted of,” former Democratic Sen. Roland Burris told the Washington Examiner when asked about the matter on Wednesday.

Blagojevich, 63, returned home to Chicago on Tuesday after Trump commuted his 14-year prison sentence. The former Democratic governor, who spent eight years in prison, said he would be “forever grateful” for Trump’s action. '“Fourteen years was just too excessive,” Burris said. “He should have been pardoned rather than sentence commuted.”'

Blagojevich was arrested in December 2008 on charges of corruption, including trying to sell the Senate seat vacated by Obama when he won the presidential election. Blagojevich, a former Chicago-area congressman, was then impeached and removed from the governor's office.

Burris, 82, said he has not spoken to Blagojevich but had a long conversation with his wife, Patricia Blagojevich, a few months ago. Burris, a former state attorney general, testified that he made no deals with Rod Blagojevich for the Senate seat. He did not run for reelection, telling the Washington Examiner that the controversy tainted his ability to run. '“Absolutely not,” he said on whether he regrets accepting the appointment. “As a matter of fact, I wish I was still there.”'

LAKELAND, Fla. – George Zimmerman, who was acquitted in the fatal shooting of a Florida teenager in 2012, filed a lawsuit against two presidential candidates, alleging they defamed him.

Zimmerman, who lives in Polk County, filed the lawsuit Tuesday in 10th Judicial Circuit Court. The suit names Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg as defendants.

The suit claims Warren and Buttigieg separately defamed Zimmerman in Twitter statements Feb. 5 recognizing what would have been Trayvon Martin’s 25th birthday. The suit says both did so “for political gain in misguided and malicious attempts to bolster their standings amongst African-American voters, all at Zimmerman’s expense.”

Sen. Warren, D-Mass., has about 3.6 million Twitter followers, and Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has about 1.6 million.

It was Giuliani who charged Milken with 98 felony counts, including racketeering, insider trading and securities fraud, when he served as the top federal prosecutor in New York City in 1989.

PHILADELPHIA – On Feb. 12, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers arrested an illegally present Jamaican man, who was released from Philadelphia custody, despite the presence of an ICE detainer filed with local authorities.

On May 24, 2009, Travas Anthony Vassell, 30, was admitted into the United States in New York on a non-immigrant visitor with authorization to remain in the United States until Nov. 23, 2009; However, Vassell failed to lawfully depart the United States as required.

On March 14, 2018, the Philadelphia Police Department arrested Vassell for the criminal offenses of possession with intent to distribute narcotics, possession of narcotics, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm in the city of Philadelphia. ICE lodged an immigration detainer with Philadelphia Police Department that same day.

On April 2, 2018, the Philadelphia prison system released him into the community despite the active ICE detainer.

On Oct. 31, 2018, the Court of Common Pleas in the County of Philadelphia convicted Vassell of possession with intent to distribute narcotics, possession of narcotics, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm in the city of Philadelphia and sentenced him to six months to 23 months incarceration and a period of three years of probation.

ERO Philadelphia arrested Vassell and he remains in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings before a federal immigration judge.

“Unfortunately, this is another example of how Philadelphia policies limiting cooperation with ICE result in significant public safety concerns,” said Simona L. Flores-Lund. “ERO deportation officers are committed to enforcing the immigration laws set forth by our legislators, although the City of Philadelphia releases inmates with active ICE detainers back into their community, the women and men of ICE will remain undeterred in its responsibility to find those in violation of immigration law and ultimately have them removed from the country."

Syrian, Russian Air-Defense Forces Foil Drone Attack On Hmeimim Air Base

Late on February 19, the Syrian and Russian air defense forces foiled a new drone attack on the Hmeimim Air Base in southern Lattakia. According to Syrian state TV, several “aerial objects” were successfully intercepted by air-defense systems over the coastal governorate.

Pro-government sources reported that the attack was launched from Greater Idlib, claiming that “long-range” rockets were also used in the attack.

Greater Idlib is controlled by the al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and several other terrorist group. The Turkish military maintains a fairly large force in the northwestern Syrian region.

The failed attack on the Hmeimim Air Base is a perfect example of the threats posed by the remaining terrorists in Greater Idlib.

Last month, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies launched a large operation to clear the entire region. However, Ankara is now threatening the army with military action if the operation continues.

Prosecution to recommend investigation into former company owned by Gantz

Blue and White leader Benny Gantz is not a suspect in the case.

The state prosecution is expected to recommend to Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit to criminally probe whether there was any wrongdoing by the Fifth Dimension, a now bankrupt cybersecurity company that was formerly owned by Blue and White Party leader Benny Gantz.

At this stage, Gantz is not expected to be treated as a suspect, only as a fact witness, and no formal decisions are expected until after the March 2 election.

The first report of possible wrongdoing surfaced in Haaretz last February, followed by a report by former state comptroller Joseph Shapira in March 2019.

It appeared that Channel 13 was tipped off first about the latest developments on Wednesday night, but The Jerusalem Post has independently confirmed the reports.

It was unknown whether the regular police or the Police Investigations Department would run the probe, since it was unclear if the case was mostly against Fifth Dimension employees, middlemen or some of the police involved.

In March 2019, Shapira’s report said that the police had acted improperly in granting Gantz’s Fifth Dimension company a deal to produce a technological solution without following the standard competitive bidding process.

More specifically, the report said that the company made three misleading statements in selling to the police, to get them to grant Fifth Dimension the deal.

Part of the delay in deciding whether to go after the Fifth Dimension on criminal charges has been that it had middlemen who were former top senior police officials, who might have gotten special treatment from police – and Gantz himself was allowed to be present during internal police discussions about who to grant the deal to.

In the end, Gantz’s company was paid only NIS 4 million of the NIS 50m. it might have gotten for the full deal, since it carried out only a pilot program before going bankrupt.

The company went bankrupt after its main investor, a Russian tycoon close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the US government.

Shapira’s report had said that the police even were prepared to grant Fifth Dimension use of proprietary police technology at a discount to help it develop the solution that the police wanted it to produce.

Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

“I can’t give you something that’s a supplement to the food you already have? Sorry that’s wrong,” Richter said.

Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a “cholent” or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless.

Richter said he was stunned. He said his family has eaten the same food forever and flourished.

Bloomberg memo warns Sanders 'impossible to stop' unless Biden, Klobuchar, and Buttigieg drop out

Michael Bloomberg's campaign publicly postures that Bloomberg is in a two-man race for the Democratic presidential nomination, but it is worried about Bernie Sanders sweeping up enough delegates to be unstoppable unless centrist rivals bow out. An internal campaign memo between top Bloomberg aides dated Feb. 17 warns that any "serious delegate advantage" from the Super Tuesday primary contests on March 3 is likely to be maintained, and as the field stands now, the Vermont senator is set to hold a 400-delegate lead over second-place Bloomberg after Super Tuesday, with the bulk of remaining delegates spread across Bloomberg and the other centrist candidates: former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg. "It will be all but impossible to stop him from getting to a plurality (or even majority) of pledged delegates," said the memo obtained by Axios. "The bottom line is that if Biden, Buttigieg, and Klobuchar remain in the race despite having no path to appreciably collecting delegates on Super Tuesday (and beyond), they will propel Sanders to a seemingly insurmountable delegate lead by siphoning votes away from [Bloomberg] with no upside for themselves."

The campaign manager for the former New York City mayor and ultrabillionaire further stressed the urgency of a strong, centrist alternative to Sanders. "The fact is if the state of this race remains status quo, with Biden, Pete, and Amy in the race on Super Tuesday, Bernie is likely to open up a delegate lead that seems nearly impossible to overcome," Kevin Sheekey told Axios. "I don’t think many people understand the dire circumstances here."

The alarm-sounding stands in contrast to public posturing from the Bloomberg campaign that the primary is already down to Bloomberg and Sanders. “Mike is quite clearly in a strong second place in this primary and rising rapidly above the rest of the field, which is either stagnant or declining quickly,” Bloomberg States Director Dan Kanninen said on a call with reporters Tuesday. “None of the other Democrats besides Mike or Bernie is in a position to amass delegates in a serious way on Super Tuesday.”

Biden's campaign shot back at the suggestion that Bloomberg is the strongest alternative to Sanders. "Mike Bloomberg has not yet endured a single debate. He has not been on the ballot in early states or won a single delegate to the convention,” a Biden spokesman said, adding that the Bloomberg campaign's assertion shows “a jarring but unsurprising level of arrogance.”

Rood reportedly raised concerns about the freeze on military aid to Ukraine last year

John Rood, the Pentagon’s top policy official who reportedly raised concerns about the freeze on military aid to Ukraine last year – the issue at the heart of Donald Trump’s impeachment – has resigned at the request of the president.

The Trump administration’s delay in releasing that aid was central to the president’s impeachment by the House on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The Senate voted to acquit the president. But in the wake of the Senate trial, an emboldened Trump has gone after officials he has perceived as being disloyal.

Rood, the undersecretary of defense for policy, appears to be the latest official to be purged. He had certified last year that the defense department had seen enough anti-corruption progress in Ukraine to justify releasing congressionally authorized aid.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration also fired Gordon Sondland, the ambassador to the EU, and Lt Col Alexander Vindman from his White House post, who both delivered testimony deemed damaging to Trump during the impeachment inquiry.

At the time, Vindman’s lawyer, David Pressman, said: “He followed orders, he obeyed his oath, and he served his country. And for that, the most powerful man in the world – buoyed by the silent, the pliable and the complicit – has decided to exact revenge.”

Rood’s letter of resignation did not mention Ukraine but said that he was leaving at Trump’s request.

“It’s my understanding from Secretary Esper that you requested my resignation,” Rood said in his letter to Trump, adding that he will step down as of 28 February.

Mark Esper, the defense secretary, said Rood had played “a critical role’’ on issues such as nuclear deterrence, Nato, missile defense and the National Defense Strategy.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday that he wanted to “thank John Rood for his service to our Country, and wish him well in his future endeavors!”

Dawn Butler, a Labour Party MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, made the comment yesterday on the popular morning TV show Good Morning Britain (GMB) while discussing transgender issues.

GMB presenter Richard Madeley asked Butler: "Do you think somebody that embraces transgender but nevertheless decides that there is a biological difference based on chromosomes, based on a penis that may not have been removed after surgery, are you saying that you think that person is transphobic?"

Butler replied: "If you’re saying that a trans woman isn’t a woman then there are issues around that.”

"Talking about penises and vaginas doesn’t help the conversation because what you’re saying then is a trans woman isn’t a woman by your own definition," she added.

Moments later in the interview Madeley said: "Look when a child is born they are identified and observed in a particular way."

Butler replied: "A child is born without sex, a child is formed without sex in the beginning.”

Butler is currently campaigning to become deputy leader of the Labour Party. She is one of several high-ranking members of the party, including leadership hopeful Rebecca Long-Bailey, who has signed a “trans-rights” pledge which commits them to supporting the expulsion from the party anyone who holds so-called “transphobic” views.

The pledge and its support from Labour leaders has been criticised for describing groups, such as Woman’s Place UK, as “trans-exclusionist hate groups” because of their support for women-only spaces for services such as toilets and domestic violence refuges.

Well-known GMB host Piers Morgan, who says he supports “transgender rights,” responded to the interview on Twitter by simply posting the word “Insane.”

Blown CIA Operation Cause for Concern

The Washington Post exposed an intelligence operation that actually helped America.

We have been discussing the Spygate scandal, abusive investigations, and the need for accountability for a while. But we also have been very quick to caution Patriots that we should not let the misdeeds done against President Donald Trump keep the intelligence community from doing what has to be done to protect this country.

Therefore, it’s concerning to see the lack of outrage over The Washington Post’s recent exposé on one CIA operation that had, for decades, been providing intelligence. The short version is that the Central Intelligence Agency had covertly purchased — and has since sold — a company specializing in encryption and used its control to gain access to secrets.

Americans now know about it, and so do the enemies the CIA spied on via this program. While it certainly gives us context about the Trump administration’s push against Huawei’s involvement in 5G systems, that context is not enough of a benefit for the cost that the knowledge of this program imposes.

Was this a shady operation? Not as shady as other methods to obtain information over the years. It certainly wasn’t enhanced interrogation in terms of controversy and betrayed Patriots. The CIA pretty much ran an encryption company and used that ownership to gain access to secrets. Only bad guys got “hurt” in this operation.

Do we really want to know how intelligence agents convince people to betray their countries? The sources don’t always give us information out of the goodness of their hearts or their love for Liberty and peace. Sometimes we pay them off with money. Other times we resort to blackmail — like giving a potential source the choice of telling secrets he knows or having some of his dirty secrets exposed. For the extremely hard cases like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, we turned to enhanced interrogation.

American intelligence agencies need to acquire information from people not inclined to yield it. For decades, the CIA’s ownership of an encryption company not only gave us direct access to secrets, it gave our intelligence community a look into the advancement of encryption technology, which is arguably as important as reading the other side’s “mail” for so many years. This was an intelligence bonanza for America, and a legitimate operation, unlike Spygate.

The fact of the matter is that we live in a world with a lot of countries that have no love for us. We also have to deal with the threat of terrorism. We need the intelligence community focused and ready to deal with those threats. Exposing programs makes it harder to protect the country, and The Washington Post should be ashamed of having done it.

Democratic Alabama Sen. Doug Jones said Wednesday that asking whether abortion should be banned after five months is “a stupid question.”

Video footage shows the Alabama senator laughing as he answered a question about late-term abortions — abortions performed after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Jones did not answer whether or not he supported abortions after five months and laughed at the question.

“Do you think abortion should be banned after five months?” a person questioned Jones.

“What stupid question do you got for me?” Jones said, and when the person repeated the question, Jones repeated with a laugh, “Should abortion be banned … as I said, what a stupid question.”

“You’re voting on it next week,” the person told him.

The Senate will vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act later in February, both Republican backed pieces of legislation that seek to ensure the safety of unborn babies. The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would protect babies capable of pain, while the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would protect babies born alive in botched abortions.

The Senate blocked similar 20-week abortion legislation, backed by President Donald Trump, in January 2018. Jones voted “no” on the bill that would have banned most abortions after 20 weeks.

Jones represents the state of Alabama, where Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country in May 2019, making performing an abortion a felony with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Jones called this legislation “extreme” and “irresponsible” in May 2019.

“I just don’t think that it is representative of what most people in Alabama think or what they want from the government,” he said, according to The Associated Press.

Jones did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

While protesting against the US latest move, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that China reserves the right to respond further to this matter.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made remarks at a routine press conference, and he said that China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the US decision and therefore "reserves the right to respond further to this matter." While the US has always glorified itself on its press freedom, it interrupts Chinese media outlets' normal operations in the US, which is unreasonable and unacceptable, so "we urge the US to take off ideologically colored glasses and abandon the zero-sum Cold War mentality," Geng said. The Trump administration said on Tuesday that it will begin treating five major Chinese state-run media entities - the Xinhua News Agency, China Global Television Network (CGTN), China Radio International, China Daily Distribution Corp and Hai Tian Development USA, Inc - with US operations the same as foreign embassies, requiring them to register their employees and US properties with the US State Department, Reuters reported. Shen Yi, head of Fudan University's Cyberspace Governance Research Institute, told the Global Times on Wednesday that although the US move actually identifies Chinese media outlets and their employees in the US as "proxies or agents of foreign governments," which means US intelligence agencies are authorized to conduct spying activities against them. "Not only will this affect the activities of Chinese journalists in the US, but also US citizens legally employed by these Chinese media outlets, and the US interviewees who communicate with Chinese media could also be targeted by the FBI and CIA," Shen said. "Tensions between the two superpowers have escalated since President Donald Trump came to office three years ago, with disputes ranging from trade tariffs to accusations of Chinese spying in the US and to US support for Taiwan," Reuters reported. It is not hard to imagine who came up with this idea, Shen said, adding: "Mike Pompeo, the head of the US State Department, who was once director of the CIA, is a man whose brain is filled with a Cold War mentality." When the US lectures or accuses China on the issue of "freedom of speech," Washington is doing nasty and terrible things to contain Chinese media outlets that express their voice in the US, and this is truly ironic and hypocritical, said Chinese experts. A prominent Michigan official — who received an award from the state’s Democratic Party earlier this year — is now facing six felony charges for stunning election crimes.

Sherikia Hawkins, who servers as a city clerk for Southfield, allegedly forged records and falsely marked absentee ballots as invalid during the 2018 midterm election.

The Democrat was arrested on Monday after the Oakland County Clerk’s office noticed discrepancies in voter counts while certifying absentee ballots from Southfield.

After police got involved and conducted an investigation, authorities found that records had been altered so that nearly 200 voter files were improperly listed as invalid.

“Our elections are the foundation of our democracy, and under my and Attorney General [Dana] Nessel’s administration there will be no tolerance for any actions that undermine that foundation — anywhere, anytime, by any person or official,” Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in a statement.

Hawkins was arraigned on Monday and released on $15,000 bond.

According to court documents, Michigan police found that 193 absentee voter files were changed in the city’s computer system to say they either had no signature or no return date, when they had both valid signatures and return dates.

Police stated that after Oakland County Election Director Joseph Rozell found that Hawkins had submitted altered reports, his staff found the original ones in a trash can at the election division office.

“All valid votes in the election were ultimately counted and the final official vote total was accurate,” she said.

Hawkins’ arrest comes just months after she was honored May 18 at the Michigan Democratic Party’s Legacy Dinner, where she received the Dingell/Levin Award. In 2017, she was listed among the “40 under 40” by the Michigan Chronicle, according to a government bio from her previous role as Pontiac city clerk.

Hawkins was charged with falsifying records in violation of state election law, forgery of a public record, misconduct in office and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime. The top count carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

Seems like corrupt Democrats have been charged and arrested a lot lately.

-Fall River Democratic Mayor Jasiel Correia was arrested on charges that he conspired to extort hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies seeking to operate marijuana businesses.

-A Democrat superior court judge in Massachusetts was arrested for assault and battery after she attacked her wife inside their home. Judge Shannon Frison allegedly “forcibly grabbed” her wife’s hair while she was holding a young child.

-A Democratic Indiana state representative and firefighter was arrested and charged after impersonating a police officer and trying to buy cocaine while driving under the influence.

SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook Inc is slated to begin a tax trial in a San Francisco court on Tuesday, as the Internal Revenue Service tries to convince a judge the world’s largest social media company owes more than $9 billion linked to its decision to shift profits to Ireland.

The trial, which Facebook expects will take three to four weeks, could see top executives including hardware chief Andrew Bosworth and Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer called to testify, according to a document the company filed in January.

The witness list also includes Naomi Gleit and Javier Olivan, veterans of Facebook’s aggressive growth team, and Chief Revenue Officer David Fischer.

The IRS argues that Facebook understated the value of the intellectual property it sold to an Irish subsidiary in 2010 while building out global operations, a move common among U.S. multinationals. Ireland has lower corporate tax rates than the United States, so the move reduced the company’s tax bill.

Under the arrangement, Facebook’s subsidiaries pay royalties to the U.S.-based parent for access to its trademark, users and platform technologies. From 2010 to 2016, Facebook Ireland paid Facebook U.S. more than $14 billion in royalties and cost-sharing payments, according to the court filing.

The company said the low valuation reflected the risks associated with Facebook’s international expansion, which took place in 2010 before its IPO and the development of its most lucrative digital advertising products.

“Las Vegas rules don’t apply in the Middle East,” Petraeus said.

Former CIA Director David Petraeus spoke about current events in the Middle East to a crowd of nearly one hundred in a packed Horchow Hall Tuesday evening.

During the talk, foreign affairs columnist David Ignatius asked Petraeus questions about the recent assassination of the Islamic Revolutionary Gen. Qassem Soleimani and the soon-expected Afghanistan peace plan. The event — titled “The Middle East in Crisis: A Role for America?” — was sponsored by the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs as well as the nonprofit advocacy group Justice for Kurds. Petraeus, who served 37 years in the U.S. military, assumed command of coalition forces during the surge in Iraq and Afghanistan. He then served as director of the CIA, attended graduate school at Princeton University and after various academic positions, now serves as chairman of the KKR Global Institute, an investment firm.

“Las Vegas rules don’t apply in the Middle East,” Petraeus said in response to Ignatius’ opening remarks. “What happens there doesn’t stay there.”

Ignatius opened the talk by asking how Americans can view ongoing war in the Middle East given that it has lasted 20 years, costs trillions of dollars and that it has taken thousands of lives.

Five thousand troops are currently stationed in Afghanistan, and questions about ways to reduce the number of troops deployed continue to emerge.

“The war in Iraq is still going on, and no one wants to end endless wars more than those fighting them,” Petraeus said. “But if you take your eyes off the enemy, they will come back.”

At the talk, Petraeus said that replacing U.S. soldiers with advisors is a possibility, though a careful scrutiny of the cost and the motivation behind such an initiative would be necessary.

Petraeus suggested that ungoverned spaces will be exploited by Islamic extremists and that the U.S. must lead and do something of value. He stated that military response requires a “civilian military campaign” against their “industrial strength insurgency” and that the commitment must be sustainable in “blood and expenditure.”

Ignatius also brought up the soon-expected peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban regarding the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. While this agreement would start the process of withdrawal, Petraeus emphasized the complexity and number of parties involved, including nearby actors like Pakistan.

Still, Petraeus said that “no wants to end endless wars more than those fighting them.”

Ignatius then turned the conversation to the recent assassination of Soleimani, Petraeus’s adversary in Iraq.

The two discussed why Soleimani was not assassinated earlier and the precedent set by President Trump’s decision to kill him. Petraeus, who saw Soleimani as a “military target,” suggested that he may have done the same “if we could have gotten the X on him.”

Although the talk was mainly attended by graduate students and faculty, a number of interested undergraduates were also in attendance.

“Even though the talk was not catered to an undergraduate audience — with a lot of prominent ambassadors and global affairs master’s students there — I was really impressed by it,” Zach Zabib ’22 said. “It was such a cool opportunity to hear from someone who had so much influence in the [Middle Eastern] region.”

Some students said they particularly enjoyed Petraeus’ comments on the future of warfare in the Middle East.

Brigitte Fink ’20, for example, noted that ISIS’s efforts in online propaganda have persisted, despite territorial loss.

“In the talk, Petraeus highlighted one of the biggest emerging issues in the future of modern war, the use of social media platforms by extremist organizations,” Fink said. “It was interesting to hear Petraeus’ thoughts on this emerging and challenging threat, and how social media companies need to do more to address extremist content on their platforms.”

Extreme cold weather being caused by the jet stream is not a result of Arctic warming, research suggests.

Past studies have indicated the warming Arctic region causes a wavier jet stream – which can lead to the conditions caused by intense cold air striking the US and Europe.

However, the new study shows Arctic warming does not drive a more meandering jet stream.

Instead, the researchers from the University of Exeter believe any link is more likely to be a result of random fluctuations in the jet stream influencing Arctic temperatures, rather than the other way around.

The well-publicised idea that Arctic warming is leading to a wavier jet stream just does not hold up to scrutiny

Dr Russell Blackport, a research fellow in mathematics and lead author of the study, said: “While there does appear to be a link between a wavier jet stream and Arctic warming in year-to-year and decade-to-decade variability, there has not been a long-term increase in waviness in response to the rapidly warming Arctic.”

For about two decades, the jet stream – a powerful band of westerly winds – was observed to have a wavier flow, which coincided with greater Arctic warming through climate change.

These waves have caused extreme weather conditions to strike mainland Europe and the US, bringing intense cold air that leads to extreme cold weather.

In this new study, Dr Blackport and Professor James Screen studied not only climate model simulations but also the observed conditions going back 40 years.

They found that the previously reported trend towards a wavier circulation during autumn and winter has reversed in recent years, despite continued Arctic amplification.

This has resulted in no long-term trends in waviness, in agreement with climate model simulations, which also suggest little change in “waviness” in response to strong Arctic warming.

According to the study published in journal Science Advances, the observed and simulated link between jet stream waviness and Arctic temperatures do not represent a causal effect of Arctic amplification on the jet stream.

Professor Screen, an associate professor in climate science at Exeter, added: “The well-publicised idea that Arctic warming is leading to a wavier jet stream just does not hold up to scrutiny.

“With the benefit of 10 more years of data and model experiments, we find no evidence of long-term changes in waviness despite on-going Arctic warming.”

Germany: Several dead in shooting in Hanau

Several people were killed and injured during a shooting in Hanau, local police said. The suspects are at currently at large.

A shooting in the western German city of Hanau late Wednesday left several people dead and many injured, police sources confirmed. German newspaper Bild has reported that at least eight people have lost their lives, while five others were wounded.

The shooting took place at two shisha bars in different parts of the city, according to local media. Authorities are currently looking for the suspects, who are said to have fled the scene.

Hanau is a city of 100,000 inhabitants in the state of Hessen, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of the city of Frankfurt.

Once upon a time, serious and well-meaning people believed communism to be the wave of the future. They thought that only scientific socialism could build just societies in which the arts and the intellect could flourish; that the Soviet Union was the place where the future existed today; and that the avuncular Josef Stalin was the only true opponent of fascism in all its capitalist and warmongering forms.

Once upon a time, the Central Intelligence Agency ran a world-wide covert action campaign to counter such nonsense in societies in which communism might take hold. Almost every CIA station had case officers dedicated to working with labor unions, intellectuals, youth and student organizations, journalists, veterans, women’s groups, and more. The Agency dealt directly with foreign representatives of these groups, but it also subsidized their activities indirectly by laundering funds through allied organizations based in the United States. In short, the Agency’s covert political action depended on the anti-communist zeal of private American citizens, only a few of whom knew that the overseas works of their ostensibly independent organizations were financed by the CIA until the campaign’s cover was disastrously blown in 1967.

British historian Hugh Wilford has just given us the best history of the covert political action campaign to date. Wilford is now associate professor of history at California State University (Long Beach), but before arriving there he spent years in pursuit of the documentation that he sensed had to exist in the organizational remains of the groups that the Agency had funded. His work brought him metaphorically to my door at the CIA History Staff, as the truth-in-reviewing code obliges me acknowledge. Full disclosure also bids me say that I wrote on the covert action campaign in a still-classified monograph published by CIA’s Center for the Study of Intelligence in 1999.

Where I had viewed the CIA’s campaign from the inside looking out, Wilford’s new book The Mighty Wurlitzer: How the CIA Played America does the job from the outside in. Wilford exploits contemporary public accounts, memoirs, and, most important, the remaining files of the various private groups involved. The Mighty Wurlitzer surpasses early attempts like Peter Coleman’s The Liberal Conspiracy (1989) and Frances Stonor Saunders’ Cultural Cold War (2000). [1] The former book had examined only one organization, the Congress for Cultural Freedom, and took a congratulatory tone that was disliked by some reviewers. The latter cast a wider net and surveyed a congeries of cultural, artistic, and intellectual groups, but its conspiracy-mongering style undermined its judgments.

US occupation forces on Wednesday entered a new convoy loaded with logistic equipment and armored vehicles to its illegitimate base in Kharab al-Geir region in Hasaka coming from northern Iraq.

DEEP STATE GETS COLD FEET: Emergency Meeting of Federal Judges Over Barr and Trump Indefinitely Postponed After Group Called Out by Trump

The ’emergency meeting’ of federal judges to discuss the intervention by Attorney General William Barr in the sentencing of Roger Stone and President Trump’s criticism of the proposed sentence was indefinitely postponed Wednesday. The teleconference meeting of the leadership of the 1,100 member Federal Judges Association, comprised of sitting federal judges, was originally set for Tuesday, then was put off a day until Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. EST. The group’s president, Judge Cynthia Rufe (a Bush 43 appointee), had initially said the meeting “could not wait” until the FJA annual meeting in April.

In the interim President Trump called out the judges in a tweet Tuesday evening that urged them to look into the FISA fraud perpetrated on the federal courts to spy on and investigate his presidential campaign and administration.

A group of federal judges hastily postponed an emergency meeting that was scheduled to take place Wednesday to discuss concerns about President Donald Trump and the Justice Department’s intervention in politically charged cases.

Megan Cruz, the executive director of the Federal Judges Association, said the meeting was set to occur Wednesday afternoon and the group was considering whether to issue a statement afterwards. But later in the day, Cruz said that the conference call between the 14 judges who serve as officers on the Executive Committee had been postponed.

Cruz offered no further details and did not respond to questions asking whether the group had been asked to reschedule the meeting…

Two Years After Handing It The Biggest Ever Bailout Loan, IMF Finds Argentina Debt Levels Are "Unsustainable"

Back in the summer of 2018, when the IMF handed Argentina an unprecedented $56 billion bailout loan, the largest in IMF history, some warned that this is a case of deja vu similar to the 2001/2002 precedent when Argentina eventually defaulted on its foreign creditors, while humiliating the IMF which had signed off on Argentina's economic policies that ended up in bankruptcy court. The IMF, however, was confident that this time would be different, and rushed - under now-ECB head Christine Lagarde - to hand to Argentina the greatest amount of money the IMF had ever disbursed to a struggling nation.

It turned out that this time wasn't different, and after completing a week of meetings in Argentine, the IMF - which so generously handed out other people's money to prop up the crumbling, corrupt Latin American nation less than two years aqo - finally threw in the towel and admitted that Argentina’s debt load is unsustainable, paving the way for the government to ask private bondholders to take on losses as it prepares to renegotiate its obligations.

The last time IMF officials commented on Argentina’s debt was in the fourth review of the credit line in July 2019, when they called it "sustainable, but not with a high probability."

Oops. But it gets better.

A "meaningful contribution" will be necessary from private bondholders to restore the country’s debt sustainability, the IMF wrote in a statement Wednesday following talks with Argentine officials during its first technical mission in Buenos Aires under Alberto Fernandez’s presidency.

"The primary surplus that would be needed to reduce public debt and gross financing needs to levels consistent with manageable rollover risk and satisfactory potential growth is not economically nor politically feasible,” the Fund said, in what may be the most embarrassing moment in the Fund's history.

Why embarrassing? Because as Hector Torres, a former executive director at the Fund who represented South American countries, said last summer, "The IMF has put a lot in - not just money, but prestige," to avoid a default. "The fact that the arrangement is not performing well right now is an embarrassment,” he said. Little did he know just how embarrassing it would get.

As discussed previously, Fernandez is seeking to renegotiate billions of dollars in debt with private creditors, including the infamous $56 billion loan with the Washington-based organization.

On December 30, 2003, after then-Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself from the CIA leak grand jury investigation of the Plame affair due to conflicts of interest, Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey, acting as Attorney General in Ashcroft's place, appointed Fitzgerald to the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel in charge of the investigation.[4][5] Fitzgerald was well-known to Comey and was in fact already godfather to one of Comey's children.

On December 30, 2003, three months after the start of the Plame investigation, Fitzgerald was appointed Special Counsel. Through this, Fitzgerald was delegated "all the authority of the Attorney General" in the matter. In February 2004, Acting Attorney General Comey clarified the delegated authority and stated that Fitzgerald has plenary authority. Comey also wrote "further, my conferral on you of the title of 'Special Counsel' in this matter should not be misunderstood to suggest that your position and authorities are defined and limited by 28 CFR Part 600."[23]

On October 28, 2005, Fitzgerald brought an indictment for 5 counts of false statements, perjury, and obstruction of justice against Lewis "Scooter" Libby, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff. Libby resigned to prepare for his legal defense. In his first press conference after announcing Libby's indictment, Fitzgerald was asked about comments by Republicans such as Kay Bailey Hutchison, who said "I certainly hope that if there is going to be an indictment that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality ..." to which Fitzgerald responded, "That talking point won't fly ... The truth is the engine of our judicial system. After serving as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois for more than a decade, Fitzgerald will be joining Skadden, according to the Chicago Tribune:

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP announced Monday that Fitzgerald will become a partner in the firm’s Chicago office on Oct. 29.

Skadden has long been among New York’s most prestigious law firms, but hiring Fitzgerald is still a coup. After leaving his post as U.S. attorney at the end of June after nearly 11 years, Fitzgerald, 51, became the most sought-after lawyer in recent Chicago history.

The U.S. Attorney for Chicago, Patrick Fitzgerald, seemed to have some great evidence — tape recordings of Blagojevich engaging in apparent wheeling and dealing (and uttering a fair amount of profanity).

Today, on the fourteenth day of jury deliberations, the jury found the former governor guilty on count 24 of the indictment, making false statements to federal agents, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1001. The maximum penalty is five years of imprisonment. This makes Blagojevich a convicted felon.

But there was some better news for Blago, too….

The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on the other 23 counts — more serious counts, with greater exposure. We’re rooting for Shanetta Cutlar. But if she doesn’t get tapped, Andrew Cohen floats this interesting idea.

Right now, Patrick Fitzgerald is most well-known for his (successful) work on the Scooter Libby case. This may preclude his selection as AG, given the political hot potato that it turned into — and the embarrassment it caused for the Bush Administration.

But let’s not forget that, setting aside the Libby case, Fitzgerald has the background that one would normally seek in an Attorney General. He’s the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago), one of the nation’s most prestigious prosecutor’s offices, and he has some serious additional credentials.

After graduating from one of our nation’s finest high schools (shameless plug for our alma mater), Pat Fitzgerald went on to Amherst College and Harvard Law School.
