Peloton Shares to Be Freed Early, Conjuring Tech Lock-Up Deja Vu-Tiger Global Mgmt and Peloton CEO among largest holders

A pivotal moment next week for at-home fitness provider Peloton Interactive Inc. could conjure up memories of last year’s releases of newly-issued stock by technology companies - moves that rattled investors and led to heightened volatility for Lyft Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc.

Come Monday, some 90% of Peloton’s shares outstanding will be freed up, opening the first window for insiders and early investors to sell since the company’s September initial public offering.

This particular lock-up - similar to Lyft’s - expires short of the traditional 180-day lock-up period that most companies follow. Meanwhile, Peloton shares at the recent close of around $27 are below its $29 IPO price. Analysts cited the early lock-up as a near-term risk to shares. MKM’s Rohit Kulkarni, in a report published Friday, said that unlike Uber and Lyft, almost all locked-up shares as well as vested stock options “have significant positive returns,” which could lead to downward pressure in the near-term. Lock-ups “created volatility for other recent tech IPOs,” in anticipation of pent up selling pressure, although the stocks tended to bounce back in the days following the expiration, BofA analyst Justin Post said in a telephone interview. Recalling Lyft and Uber’s volatility around their lock-up expirations, Raymond James analyst Justin Patterson said that it “coincided with negative regulatory headlines. And unique to Uber was a former executive selling fairly aggressively into the market.” By contrast, Peloton’s founders remain at the company.

The date was moved up because Peloton’s lock-up expiry would have fallen during a blackout period that would bar insiders from selling, according to a Feb. 5 filing submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission when the company reported earnings. A highlight of the filing was the company’s estimate of shares outstanding - 317 million. That figure includes options that have or will be vested as of Feb. 24, as well as some 273 million convertible Class B shares eligible to be sold in the public market.

Analysts using the 280 million shares outstanding that were cited in Peloton’s quarterly report have some math homework to do before Monday. Based on JPMorgan’s estimate of roughly 277 million shares that will unlock for insiders and early investors, about 87% of Peloton’s estimated 317 million shares outstanding stands to be freed. That would include 144 million shares held by affiliates and 133 million shares held by non-affiliates.

Tiger Global Management and Peloton Chief Executive Officer John Foley are among the largest affiliates, with roughly 15% and 6.1% holdings respectively, according to JPMorgan. Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV) has 6%. Fidelity, which owns 5% of shares outstanding, and Comcast, with 3.3%, are not counted among affiliates, according to JPMorgan. Tiger Global and Fidelity declined to comment. TCV deferred to the company to answer questions while Peloton declined to comment.

Myles Caggins as part of its coverage focusing on Syrian and Russian forces “indiscriminately” attacking civilians and “bombing hospitals” — however, the Army colonel gave a counter angle, instead focusing on the jihadist groups ruling Idlib as the fundamental cause to civilian suffering there.

He essentially identified “all” of groups operating on the ground as “terrorists” and a “threat” to the local population in the rare frank commentary:

His truthful words are all the more interesting given they come at a moment that CNN and other mainstream networks have "rediscovered" Idlib and "evil Assad and Russia" who they say are attempting to "butcher" children and innocent civilians.

The very network that interviewed the Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman elsewhere on the same day questioned "whether the international community is doing enough to restrain the Assad regime."

The main anti-Assad group on the ground fighting the Syrian Army has long been al-Qaeda faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Nusra Front), which is a US Treasury designated terrorist organization.

Typically US and UK media reports leave out this crucial fact and nuance altogether, acting as if the whole conflict is as simple as Assad and Putin wishing to kill as many civilians as possible.

Such ultra-simplistic coverage has just been debunked by the Pentagon's Caggins, who essentially admits that the Russians and Syrian Army are fighting terrorist groups occupying Idlib province.

Erdogan says Turkey will not withdraw from Syria’s Idlib until attacks by Damascus stop

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed not to remove Turkish troops from Syria’s Idlib region and said that his upcoming phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin will help Ankara determine its policies.

A phone call between the two leaders to discuss Idlib is expected to take place on Friday evening. “The result of this conversation will determine our attitude” in the area, Erdogan said. ‘Harmfully Misleading:’ Twitter Tests Warning Labels on World Leaders’ Tweets

Twitter is reportedly testing colorful labels on tweets from politicians and world leaders if the site determines the posts contain lies or misinformation. In leaked screenshots, a bright orange label describes tweets as “harmfully misleading.”

NBC News reports that social media site Twitter is experimenting with a feature that would add bright orange and red labels beneath the tweets of politicians. The labels would be added if Twitter decides the post is misleading or a lie.

The potential feature would see alleged disinformation posted by public figures on the platform corrected by fact-checker and journalists who have been verified on Twitter. The feature is still experimental but it is possible that other users will participate in the “community reports” program, which the demo claims is “like Wikipedia.”

A Twitter spokesperson told NBC News: “We’re exploring a number of ways to address misinformation and provide more context for tweets on Twitter. Misinformation is a critical issue and we will be testing many different ways to address it.”

The demo shows tweets from politicians with large orange banners below reading “Harmfully Misleading.” Examples of how this system would work including badges attached to tweets from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and a tweet from author Anand Ranganathan.

The experimental policy comes just as the 2020 election season ramps up with Twitter playing a key role in the spread of political information. Last month, Twitter announced in a blog post relating to media on its platform that it would be banning any “synthetic or manipulated” media that is “likely to cause harm.”

One version of the demo of the new badge system for information notes that Twitter users could earn “points” and “community badge” if they “contribute in good faith and act like a good neighbor” and “provide critical context to help people understand information they see.”

“Together, we act to help each other understand what’s happening in the world, and protect each other from those who would drive us apart,” the demo states. A Twitter spokesperson reiterated to NBC that the community reporting feature is just one of several versions of the program that will be launched in the next few weeks.

“This is a design mock-up for one option that would involve community feedback,” the spokesperson said.

New Law in Cambridge, MA Instructs Police Not To Arrest Illegals for Unlicensed Driving

Nobody is above the law — unless, of course, you’re an illegal immigrant driving without a license in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The sanctuary city unanimously passed an ordinance Monday that tells police officers they should, whenever possible, avoid arresting drivers for being on the road without a driver’s license.

The ordinance is intended to block federal immigration officials from obtaining access to information regarding illegal immigrants, WXFT reported.

“We need to protect our community members from a federal government that’s out of control,” Cambridge City Councilor Quinton Zondervan said.

“There are no other reasons for the police to arrest someone, give them a court summons instead which keeps them out of the clutches of the Trump administration,” Zondervan added.

The city has prioritized finding ways to shield illegal immigrants from facing deportation for several years, according to WXFT.

While the new ordinance applies to legal and illegal drivers, it was clearly written with those who are in the country illegally in mind.

The so-called “Welcoming Community Ordinance” is meant “to establish the City of Cambridge as a Welcoming City, to declare that all are welcome here, and to increase public confidence in the City of Cambridge’s government by establishing standards associated with the City’s voluntary involvement in federal immigration enforcement,” according to the measure’s text, The Cambridge Chronicle reported.

Under the ordinance, police are not only told to refrain from arresting unlicensed drivers (including illegal immigrants), they are encouraged to help those drivers find a another person with a license to drive their car from the scene so that they can avoid having it impounded.

Update (1240ET): As we mentioned below, the CDC had some pretty chilling words for the American public during a press conference on Friday. During the 12:15pm ET update, the organization warned that it had centralized 'surge' virus response due to a lack of testing kits and the fact that every state but three is unprepared for the epidemic.

During the press conference, the CDC described the virus as a "tremendous public healht threat" and warned that human to human transmission in the US is "very possible, even likely."

The announcement comes after the Washington Post reported last night that the CDC opposed the State Department's decision to bring the 14 Americans confirmed to have been infected with the virus aboard the 'Diamond Princess' back to the US with the other ~300 evacuees - thereby breaking the quarantine and risking a broader outbreak, and exposing many of the passengers on the flight who hadn't been infected to the virus.

The CDC was so mad, it reportedly asked for its name to be removed from a press release about the evacuation.

We also noted at the time that the decision to break the quarantine and bring the 14 infected persons back seemed idiotic.

So far, it's looking like that's exactly what's happening: As we noted earlier, 11 of 13 people quarantined in Nebraska have now tested positive.

Just imagine what happens if it hits Omaha, or Chicago. Or New York (which has already had a few scares):

Update (1230ET): Remember those two hospitals that China slapped together in Wuhan that some have compared to prisons, and which have reportedly been rife with problems?

Well, now China is planning to build another 19 makeshift hospitals to quarantine more infected patients in Wuhan.

So far, the city of 11 million has converted 13 existing venues into hospitals, with a total of 13,348 beds. The 19 new hospitals would create 30,000 beds, according to China's Global Times.

In other news, minutes ago, two more coronavirus cases were confirmed in northern Italian region of Lombardy, bringing the country's total announced on Friday to 16. Italy now has some 19 cases.

It's unclear whether the patients were infected in Italy, or abroad. Some 250 others are in isolation awaiting testing results. Most of the cases have been found in northern Italy.

In the US, the CDC has warned that only three states, California, Nevada and Illinois, have the testing capacity needed to confront a coronavirus outbreak. Until more become available, the CDC will be handling any necessary 'surge testing'. They added that future human to human transmission in the US is possible, even 'likely' (which is why the US probably should have left those 'DP' passengers in Japan).

Parents in Wisconsin are suing a public school district over a policy they claim allows children to “socially transition” their gender identity without parental consent.

The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty filed the suit Tuesday on behalf of 14 parents against the Madison Metropolitan School District. The lawsuit claims that a school policy enacted in 2018 requires teachers to “enable” students to “socially transition to a different gender identity” without parental consent or knowledge.

"Madison schools have adopted policies that violate constitutionally recognized parental rights. A public school district should not and cannot make decisions reserved for parents," WILL President Rick Esenberg said in a statement.

The unnamed parents in the suit also claim that teachers are told to “deceive” them by calling students by the name on their birth certificate and using pronouns that correspond with their biological sex when parents are present.

"This action seeks to vindicate parents' fundamental and constitutional right to direct the upbringing of their children," the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty said in a statement. “The Madison Metropolitan School District has violated this important right by adopting a policy designed to circumvent parental involvement in a pivotal decision affecting their children's health and future. The policy enables children, of any age, to socially transition to a different gender identity at school without parental notice or consent."

Did The Fed Just Reveal Its Plans For A Digital Dollar Replacement?

Thanks to the Federal Reserve, the idea that you can go into a store and anonymously purchase something with cash might soon be obsolete.

Why? Because they’re developing something called Fedcoin, which would be based on blockchain technology.

If you’re unfamiliar with blockchain technology, you’re not alone. Here’s how a piece on Motley Fool describes it:

The digital and decentralized ledger that records all transactions. Every time someone buys digital coins on a decentralized exchange, sells coins, transfers coins, or buys a good or service with virtual coins, a ledger records that transaction, often in an encrypted fashion, to protect it from cybercriminals. These transactions are also recorded and processed without a third-party provider, which is usually a bank.

Right now, Bitcoin is a popular form of cryptocurrency that operates using blockchain technology. Like the description above, Bitcoin is decentralized, its transactions are anonymous, and no central bank is involved.

But the irony is, the blockchain tech behind the Fed’s idea isn’t likely to be used the way Bitcoin uses it. Not even close.

Originally, the “Fedcoin” idea appeared to be a security enhancement to a century-old system used for clearing checks and cash transactions called Fedwire. According to NASDAQ in 2017:

This technology will bring Fedwire into the 21st Century. Tentatively called Fedcoin, this Federal Reserve cryptocurrency could replace the dollar as we know it.

The idea didn’t seem to move very much three years ago, but now the idea of a central bank-controlled “Fedcoin” seems like it could be moving closer to reality, according to a Reuters report from February 5.

According to the report, “Dozens of central banks globally are also doing such work,” including China.

Of course, there is risk, according to Federal Reserve Governor Lael Brainard. For example, there is the potential for a country-wide run on banks if panic ensued while the Fed “flipped a switch” and made Fedcoin the primary currency for the United States.

But blogger Robert Wenzel warns the risks of the Federal Reserve issuing its own cyber currency may run even deeper than that.

“This is not good.”

Lawmakers try to package and sell whatever ideas they come up with, no matter how intrusive or ineffective they might be.

According to Brainard, Fedcoin has the potential to provide “greater value at a lower cost” for monetary transactions. Sounds reasonable, if taken at face value.

But no matter how the Fed may try to “sell” the idea of utilizing Fedcoin in the future, Wenzel’s warning is pretty clear:

A Federal Reserve created digital coin could be one of the most dangerous steps ever taken by a government agency. It would put in the hands of the government the potential to create a digital currency with the ability to track all transactions in an economy—and prohibit transactions for any reason. In terms of future individual freedom, this would be a nightmare.

If you use cash at a grocery store, no one will know who you are or what you bought unless it was caught on video or you use a reward card. In the rare instance a store accepts Bitcoin, the same would be true.

But if you were to use a centrally-controlled digital currency like Fedcoin, who knows what the Fed will decide to track now or in the future? Or what meddling they could come up with to deny your transaction?

Ever since President Trump commuted the sentence of disgraced former governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich, I’ve been asking myself why he would do such a thing. I have a theory about what might have contributed to the decision, and if I’m right, Barack Obama should be concerned.

But, Blagojevich didn’t just want to give it away, he wanted something for it. “A Senate seat is a f—ing valuable thing. You don’t just give it away for nothing,” Blagojevich said at the time.

In 2011, Blagojevich was sentenced to 11 years in prison on corruption charges. Of course, he wanted a pardon from Obama, but never got one. That had to be tough for the disgraced governor, considering Obama granted clemency to terrorists and traitors, but couldn’t (or wouldn’t) give one to a former political ally.

White House plans 5G summit with global tech leaders as battle with Huawei continues

The Trump administration is planning a 5G summit with global tech leaders in April at the White House, officials said.

The meeting is part of the White House’s efforts to keep Chinese telecom giant Huawei from becoming dominant in next generation communications technology.

Behind the scenes, tech executives such as Microsoft President Brad Smith have been meeting with Trump to discuss maintaining American communications dominance.

The Trump administration is planning a 5G summit at the White House in early April as part of its global effort to ensure that Chinese telecom giant Huawei does not become dominant in next generation communications technologies, officials told CNBC.

The event has not been officially announced yet. The president’s top economic advisor, Larry Kudlow, told reporters Friday that such a meeting would happen.

“We’re going to have a lot of them in the White House to have a discussion. I’m sure the president will join us in part. That would include Samsung, that would include all of our guys,” Kudlow said.

The development comes at a crucial moment for U.S.-Chinese relations. China, which is grappling with the coronavirus outbreak, last month signed a “phase one” trade deal with Trump as both sides look to complete additional phases.

Behind the scenes, a senior administration official said telecom and technology CEOs have been visiting with President Donald Trump at the White House to explain their views on how to make sure that American firms continue to dominate the communications industry.

Particularly influential in shaping White House thinking has been Microsoft President Brad Smith, who has discussed the issue face to face with Trump.

“We’ve been working with him,” the senior administration official said of Smith. “He spoke to POTUS about a month ago and they saw each other in Davos.”

The input of Smith and other tech CEOs who have met with the president has helped shape an emerging view that the 5G issue is as much about software as it is about physical infrastructure.

“They’re smarter than we are, and they’re patriots,” the official said of the CEOs. “They want to help the U.S. be in the lead on 5G. Software and the cloud are going to revolutionize infrastructure.”

The upcoming 5G summit is intended to gather information from the tech industry to help the White House press its case with allied countries that they should not allow Huawei equipment into their telecommunications networks. The administration fears that the Chinese government has installed “back doors” in the gear that will allow for spying on sensitive communications.

Despite pressure from the U.S., the U.K. has decided to allow Huawei equipment in its 5G networks.

The White House plans to invite foreign companies based in allied countries, including Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung, the official said.

Attorney General William Barr suggested earlier this month that the United States should go as far as purchasing a controlling stake in Nokia and Ericsson in order to provide a safe harbor for non Chinese telecommunications equipment.

But other officials within the White House quickly shot that idea down privately, worrying that it was inappropriate for taxpayers to buy large stakes in private firms.

In my opinion, it all comes back to Blagojevich's attempt to sell Obama’s former Senate seat. Soon after Obama’s victory, negotiations began for Blagojevich to appoint an Obama-approved candidate to fill his seat. Obama even provided a list of suitable candidates. At the top of the list was Valerie Jarrett. But, as previously mentioned, Blagojevich didn’t just want to give away the seat to someone. He wanted something in return: a position in Obama’s cabinet. Unfortunately for him, at the time, he was politically unpopular and the target of a federal corruption probe, and being wiretapped by the FBI. The chances of him getting picked for a cabinet position were slim. Jarrett also eventually decided to follow Obama to the White House as an advisor.

When the Senate-seat-for-sale scandal broke, Obama denied having any contact with the governor about his Senate seat, and his transition team conducted an internal investigation, which obviously cleared him of violating any laws-because what other conclusion would the Obama transition team come to? However, the criminal complaint and sworn testimony during Blagojevich’s trial contradicted Obama’s statements, as did media reports at the time. Obama advisor David Axelrod also accidentally revealed that Obama spoke directly with Blagojevich about the Senate seat-though he later claimed he misspoke.

Blagojevich even wanted Obama subpoenaed to testify in his trial. One government witness in the trial testified that Obama sent intermediaries to negotiate on his behalf about who should be named to fill his former seat-directly contradicting Obama White House claims to the contrary.

Now that Blagojevich is a free man, slighted by Obama but ingratiated by Trump, it could mean that he'll be willing to talk more freely about Obama’s illegal actions in the Senate-seat-for-sale scandal. I’d love to see that happen. That scandal was one of many that Obama was never held accountable for.

“President Obama has direct knowledge to allegations made in the indictment. In addition, President Obama’s public statements contradict other witness statements, specifically those made by labor union official and Senate Candidate B,” the motion said.

Blagojevich’s lawyers allege that Tony Rezko admitted to violating the law by personally contributing “a large sum of cash” to a public official’s campaign,

which the Blagojevich people say is Obama.

The lawyers claim that Obama may not have been telling the truth when he said Rezko never relayed a request from a lobbyist to hold a fundraiser for Obama in exchange for favorable legislative action (Obama, however, refused to agree to the offer, Rezko allegedly says).

They also claim that Obama allegedly lied when he said he didn’t have any conversations with Rezko about a casino license…

In a recent in camera proceeding, the government tendered a three paragraph letter indicating that Rezko “has stated in interviews with the government that he engaged in election law violations by personally contributing a large sum of cash to the campaign of a public official who is not Rod Blagojevich. … Further, the public official denies being aware of cash contributions to his campaign by Rezko or others and denies having conversations with Rezko related to cash contributions.

Rezko has also stated in interviews with the government that he believed he transmitted a quid pro quo offer from a lobbyist to the public official, whereby the lobbyist would hold a fundraiser for the official in exchange for favorable official action, but that the public official rejected the offer. The public official denies any such conversation.

In addition, Rezko has stated to the government that he and the public official had certain conversations about gaming legislation and administration, which the public official denies having had.

President Obama is the only one who can testify as to the veracity of Mr. Rezko’s allegations above.

Turkey’s Strategy Is Pushing It Into A Corner

The situation in Idlib has long been shaped by the balance of talks between Russia and Turkey, and to a lesser extent Iran.

The bifurcation point was the Sochi Agreement of 2018, when Russia and Iran recognized Turkey’s right to control the situation in Idlib until the end of the war, up to the formation of the Constitutional Committee and presidential elections, while Ankara agreed to accept Syrian President Bashar al-Assad if he wins the elections.

Turkey had to do three things for that to happen: separate the actual terrorists from the “moderate opposition” and remove all heavy weapons from the area, unblock the Hama-Aleppo and Latakia-Aleppo routes (while the surrounding area remained in control of militants) and ensure that the de-escalation zone is actually effective, in conjunction with the Russian military.

Turkey didn’t carry out any of its obligations, irrespective if it could or it couldn’t.

As the Syrian Arab Army cleared other territories of Syria, the situation in Idlib did not fundamentally change.

A year after Sochi, part of the rural Idlib was taken from the militants. Erdogan did not understand which way the wind was blowing, he had a tactic and he adhered to it.

The Syrian government constantly demanded that Russia give the go-ahead for the offensive, and in the end, it got it, and the operation in Idlib began.

A situation arose, in which Turkey could come to the negotiation table for a post-war Syria without Idlib. This, in the long run would weaken the negotiating position of Turkey and its ability to influence the formation of post-war Syria.

Ankara began issuing complaints to Moscow and point out that the Syrian Arab Army is surrounding its observation posts and violates the Sochi agreement.

Moscow pointed out that Turkey did nothing for 1.5 years to fulfill the main points of the Sochi agreement, and thus, Assad’s government is in his own right.

And while Erdogan was stirring up drama and spreading propaganda in media, the Syrian government, with the support of Russia and Iran, took part of the negotiation asset from Erdogan, thereby changing the potential balance of negotiations on post-war Syria.

Because, it is in the Syrian government’s interest to have as little possible territory outside of its control when the war ends, since that would mean making as few concessions as possible.

By February, Turkey’s strategic loss was obvious, the front of the militants fell apart, dozens of cities began to be liberated, and due to the position of Russia and Iran, any logical moves within the framework of the Turkish Idlib strategy ended.

Ex-Sanders Criminal Justice Adviser Arrested After Plotting Violent Jailbreak

A former consultant to Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign was arrested after he allegedly planted loaded weapons and ammunition inside a soon-to-be-opened Tennessee prison, according to authorities

On Wednesday, Nashville police said that prison reform advocate Alex Friedmann - who helped shape Sanders' criminal justice agenda - spent months plotting to help prisoners escape after the facility was opened. He was arrested on Tuesday on one count of felony vandalism - however the allegations go far beyond that according to Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall.

"Throughout the last several weeks it was discovered that Mr. Friedmann, over many months, had developed and implemented an extremely deliberate – and in my opinion evil – plan," said Hall, adding "Understand, this plan went far beyond vandalism. Ultimately it included planting various tools, weapons, security equipment throughout this facility. All designed to assist in a massive escape plan."

The stashed weapons included loaded guns and ammunition, according to Hall, who added "What disturbed me most is not that this was about an escape ... It was also about loss of life."

Sheriff Hall said the arrest came after an investigation stemming from a previous case involving Friedmann, who was arrested in January on charges including attempted burglary for allegedly posing as a construction worker to enter a different detention center multiple times, stealing keys, and diagraming the layout of the center, which was still being built and not in use at the time.

A press release from the sheriff’s office said that corrections officials noticed on Dec. 30 that two keys were missing. They viewed surveillance video and saw someone dressed as a construction worker who matched Friedmann’s description taking a key ring, then coming back and replacing it with two keys missing. -Fox News

Friedmann was one of several consultants to Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign advising him on criminal justice issue. According to Fox News, his input resulted in Sanders introducing a bill aimed at eliminating private prisons. In 2015, Friedmann told The Atlantic that the bill didn't go far enough.

"It appears to be more for political purposes than to actually address the many problems in our criminal justice system," he said.

Friedmann, who was associate director of the Human Rights Defense Center and managing editor of its Prison Legal News publication, was released following that arrest after he posted $2,500 bond, and the case is still pending. HRDC director Paul Wright declined to comment on the allegations but told Fox News that Friedmann resigned from the organization following his January arrest. -Fox News

Friedmann's attorney, Ben Raybin, told Fox News that it was "important to clarify that the new vandalism charge stems from alleged conduct arising last year, and not any recent actions occurring after his previous arrest," adding that his client returned the keys to the sheriff's office and had been cooperative.

"Mr. Friedmann surrendered himself immediately after being advised of the new charge," he said.

Friedmann is currently in custody with a $2.5 million bond. His next court appearance is Feb. 26, while the previous case has an April 6 appearance.

They have been on the scene for nearly a decade, but most of their philanthropic resources and energies have been dedicated to supporting Jewish identity-building initiatives for Russian-speaking Jews around the world. The launch of the Genesis Prize was aimed at influencing the wider Jewish world, inspiring Jewish pride among young people by shining a spotlight each year on one Member of the Tribe who has made a big impact in the world. As with much of what they do, they did it big. For starters, there was the $1 million in prize money and a $100 million endowment to back it up, plus a formal partnership with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Jewish Agency for Israel. The prize selection process boasted two living Jewish legends, Natan Sharansky and Elie Wiesel. Then there was Bloomberg himself — and his willingness to embrace the role. And, finally, the packed celebration in Jerusalem.

Along the way, some commentators and communal insiders scratched their heads. Why do we need a Jewish Nobel? (Or, as Leno quipped, isn’t the Nobel the Jewish Nobel?) FBI agents were seen carrying boxes out of The Healthcare Institute on Winchester Road on Friday.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — FBI agents conducted a search Friday at a nursing school founded by state Sen. Katrina Robinson, the agency confirmed.

Agents were seen removing boxes from The Healthcare Institute, 7253 Winchester Road. An FBI spokesman did not comment on the nature of the investigation, but said agents were executing a search warrant.

According to Robinson’s campaign website, she founded the vocational nursing school with a $1.6 million federal grant in 2015.

Agents also searched a southeast Shelby County home, the spokesman said. Records show the address matches Robinson’s.

Robinson, a Democrat representing southeast Memphis and Shelby County, won the District 33 seat in the Tennessee State Senate in 2018.

Brandon Puttbrese, spokesman for the Senate Democratic Caucus, deferred questions to Robinson’s attorney.

“We’ve been made aware of the investigation and have received no indication that it relates to the legislature or her legislative service,” he said. “Our thoughts are with Sen. Robinson and her family.”

Rep. Antonio Parkinson also released a statement saying, “We are aware of the investigation regarding Senator Robinson. We are not aware of the details surrounding the investigation. We are referring all inquiries to Senator Robinson’s attorney. Our thoughts and prayers are with our colleague and her family during this time.”

Rohrabacher’s claim calls into question accusations made earlier this week by a Wikileaks attorney who alleged that Rohrabacher was acting “on instructions” from President Trump to offer clemency to Assange if he confirmed Russia wasn’t involved in leaking Democratic National Committee emails during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Mainstream outlets including The Washington Post, The Guardian, Reuters, and the Associated Press ran with the initial allegation, printing sensational headlines implicating President Trump, even though some of them acknowledged in their reporting that Rohrabacher denied he was following orders from the president.

In a recent interview with Yahoo News, Rohrabacher said his goal in meeting with Assange in 2017 was to find proof to support the unsubstantiated rumor that slain DNC staffer Seth Rich was the real source of the DNC leak, not Russian agents. He said that he never spoke to President Trump about the proposed deal.

“I spoke to Julian Assange and told him if he would provide evidence about who gave WikiLeaks the emails I would petition the president to give him a pardon,” Rohrabacher told Yahoo! News. “He knew I could get to the president.”

The former congressman wrote on his personal blog earlier this week that “there is a lot of misinformation floating out there regarding my meeting with Julian Assange.”

“At no time did I talk to President Trump about Julian Assange. Likewise, I was not directed by Trump or anyone else connected with him to meet with Julian Assange,” he wrote.

Rohrabacher said that he called then-chief of staff John Kelly to discuss the proposal, but said Kelly made no promises that he would even raise the matter directly with the president. The former congressman said he never heard anything back from Kelly on the subject and never discussed the subject directly with President Trump.

Since the claim by the Wikileaks attorney went public in a London court, the mainstream media has attempted to spin the claim as proof that President Trump has tried to coordinate with Wikileaks in order to damage his political opponents at home.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham has denied that President Trump ordered Rohrabacher to make a deal with Assange, saying that the president has “never spoken to him on this subject or almost any subject.”

Assange faces extradition to the U.S. on multiple charges, though none of them are related to the DNC hack.

Seth Rich was murdered on July 10, 2016, in Washington, DC. No charges have ever been brought related to his death, and his killer remains at large.

Jeffrey Epstein's alleged 'madam' told a former acquaintance that she and the now-dead pedophile had "everything on videotape," according to The Telegraph.

The acquaintance, socialite and distant relative to the royals Christina Oxenberg, said that Maxwell also told her that Epstein bought a private helicopter because commercial pilots were "eyes and ears" he did not need.

She revealed she had spoken to the FBI about what she had been told.

Ms Oxenberg, 57, first met Maxwell in the early 1990s and said she would never forget a conversation the pair once had in Maxwell’s home.

“We were alone,” she said. “She said many things. All creepy. Unorthodox. Strange. I could not believe whatever she was saying was real. Stuff like: 'Jeffrey and I have everyone on videotape.’”...

Maxwell has been accused by several alleged Epstein victims of both facilitating and participating in sexual crimes. She has vehemently denied the claims and has not been charged with any crimes in connection to Epstein's activities.

Slim to Break Mexico Stock Drought With $1.4 Billion Sale

Billionaire Carlos Slim’s construction company Promotora del Desarrollo de America Latina is planning the biggest public stock offering Mexico has seen in almost two years.

The company, known as Promotora Ideal, will sell 25.8 billion pesos ($1.4 billion) worth of shares in a Fibra E, a Mexican REIT-like structure that invests in infrastructure projects, according to a filing to Mexico’s stock exchange.

The sale is led by two Canadian funds owned by Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, who bought a stake in Promotora Ideal’s parent company. The funds will retain small stakes in the Fibra E and Promotora Ideal will administer the Fibra E after it is issued. A Slim spokesman and spokespeople for the Canadian funds did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Juan Rich, head of research at Mexican brokerage Ve por Mas, said the listing could draw a lot of interest since Mexican benchmark interest rates are expected to keep falling, which boosts the appeal of the dividend yields of REIT-like investments. “It is a good time to list a Fibra,” Rich said.

Slim’s Telesites, which own telecommunications towers, said earlier this month it was also exploring issuing a Fibra, but the company has not set a date or provided further details. The Ideal offering is set to break a long dry spell in Mexican markets and is the first Fibra E to be listed since June 2018, when Administrador Fibraestructura raised $298 million. It is also the biggest offering in the country since Mexico City’s planned new airport project sold $1.5 billion in stock in a March 2018 IPO.

Uncertainty has surrounded the Mexican capital markets since the airport project was canceled by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador just seven months after the IPO. Carlos Slim’s companies had major contracts with the airport project, and the pension fund run by his bank, Grupo Financiero Inbursa, was a top investor in the airport Fibra. Sluggish economic growth and declining investment have also contributed to Mexico’s listing shortage.

Ideal’s listing will take place at some point this year, and Casa de Bolsa Credit Suisse will be the bookrunner.

Bernie Sanders briefed by U.S. officials that Russia is trying to help his presidential campaign

U.S. officials have told Sen. Bernie Sanders that Russia is attempting to help his presidential campaign as part of an effort to interfere with the Democratic contest, according to people familiar with the matter.

President Trump and lawmakers on Capitol Hill have also been informed about the Russian assistance to the Vermont senator, according to people familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

It is not clear what form that Russian assistance has taken. U.S. prosecutors found a Russian effort in 2016 to use social media to boost Sanders campaign against Hillary Clinton, part of a broader effort to hurt Clinton, sow dissension in the American electorate and ultimately help elect Donald Trump.

“I don’t care, frankly, who Putin wants to be president,” Sanders said in a statement to The Washington Post. “My message to Putin is clear: stay out of American elections, and as president I will make sure that you do.

“In 2016, Russia used internet propaganda to sow division in our country, and my understanding is that they are doing it again in 2020. Some of the ugly stuff on the internet attributed to our campaign may well not be coming from real supporters.”

A spokesperson for the Sanders campaign declined to comment on the briefing by U.S. officials on Russia’s attempts to help the Sanders campaign. .

Sanders’s opponents have blamed some of his most vocal online supporters for injecting toxic rhetoric into the primaries. At a Democratic candidates debate in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Sanders indirectly blamed Russia, saying it was possible malign actors were trying to manipulate social media to inflame divisions among Democrats.

“All of us remember 2016, and what we remember is efforts by Russians and others to try to interfere in our elections and divide us up,” Sanders said. “I’m not saying that’s happening, but it would not shock me.”

'The Justice Department announced Thursday that an employee of the DIA pleaded guilty to leaking classified national defense information to two journalists in 2018 and 2019, which could land him in prison for a maximum of ten years.

Leaking classified information is, of course, against the law – that is, unless you are former FBI Director James Comey or former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. There are others too, for example a former deputy assistant director of the FBI’s international operations division, who also was called out by the DOJ’s Inspector General for allegedly leaking to reporters and accepting gifts from the media, as reported in The Washington Examiner.

Further, FBI officials altered Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant applications to spy on Carter Page, a U.S. citizen, who happened to be a volunteer for President Donald Trump’s campaign. Now, years later, after multiple investigations it was discovered that those same FBI officials, Comey and McCabe, among others, signed off on the phony warrants.

Still, senior government officials in the FBI – as well as other agencies – have escaped prosecution for leaking classified information and or lying under oath. Others have not been so lucky.

Defense Intelligence Agency employee Henry Kyle Frese is one of the unlucky leakers. Frese, a 31-year-old resident of Alexandria, Virginia, is expected to be sentenced on June 18.

Frese “was entrusted with Top Secret information related to the national defense of our country. Frese violated that trust, the oath he swore to uphold, and engaged in felonious conduct at the expense of our country. This case should serve as a clear reminder to all of those similarly entrusted with National Defense Information that unilaterally disclosing such information for personal gain, or that of others, is not selfless or heroic, it is criminal,” ” said G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Robert Wells, Acting Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division said “Frese violated his sworn oath to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States by using his access to the United States’ most sensitive information and steal state secrets for nothing more than personal gain. The men and women of the FBI who investigated this case swore the same oath but unlike Mr. Frese, they chose to uphold it. I am proud of the work they did to hold Mr. Frese accountable for his actions.”

There is no argument that Frese should pay the price for leaking classified national security information to the press but what does it say when the DOJ refuses to prosecute former senior FBI officials, who were referred for prosecution on similar grounds. What does it say when leadership within the FBI, like Comey, sets a precedent that leaking for personal convictions won’t land you in prison. Couldn’t Frese argue that same point?

Over the past three years it appears there is one set of rules for those with friends in high places and another set of rules for those without. Last year, nearly half a dozen federal employees with the “FBI, DEA, a U.S. attorney and U.S. marshal officials were allowed to retire, do volunteer work, or keep their jobs as they escaped criminal charges that everyday Americans probably would not,” as previously reported at The Hill.'

Bloomberg will release women who complained about him from nondisclosure agreements

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is willing to release women from nondisclosure agreements in relation to complaints about comments he made. Nevada Dems will abandon Google form, rely on phone for caucus results amid tech fears

Nevada Democrats will now abandon plans to use a Google application to report the results of its caucuses Saturday and instead use phones amid fears of tech problems, Fox News has confirmed.

Three of the presidential campaigns confirmed receiving a memo from the state party announcing plans to use phones.

It comes as Democrats work to avoid the chaos seen in reporting the results of the Iowa caucuses.

“After their precinct caucuses conclude, the precinct chairs will call a hotline to securely report their results to a trained operator, will submit via text a photo of their caucus reporting sheet to state party staff through an established MMS reporting hub, and then they will return their caucus reporting sheet and other materials to their Site Lead,” the memo to the campaigns read.

The memo was first reported by The New York Times

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) expressed confidence in the plan in a statement Friday.

"Nevada Democrats have learned important lessons from Iowa, and we're confident they're implementing these best practices into their preparations,” said Xochitl Hinojosa, a DNC spokeswoman. “We've deployed staff to help them across the board, from technical assistance to volunteer recruitment."

Some troops deployed amid Iran tensions return home

About 800 troops rapidly deployed to the Middle East amid tensions with Iran have returned home. Troops with the 82nd Airborne Division returned to Fort Bragg on Thursday. They were deployed to the region in December after protesters with an Iranian-backed militia group attacked the United States Embassy in Baghdad. About 2,700 other soldiers who were deployed then still remain in Kuwait, and it is unclear when they will be ordered to return back to the U.S. The deployments came at about the same time the U.S. killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in a January drone strike in Baghdad. Iran retaliated by firing several missiles at Iraqi bases housing U.S. forces.

Officials described the rush to get extra troops to the region as the “most significant no-notice deployment of combat forces” in three decades. “Nearly 800 Paratroopers from the 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, along with members of the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, the 3rd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment and several enabler teams from the Immediate Response Force Brigade (IRF) began their redeployment from the Middle East back to Fort Bragg, N.C.,” the 82nd Airborne said in a statement.

The troops returned a day before Iran holds its parliamentary election, which is expected to see low voter turnout. Anti-regime protests occurred again in January after Iran shot down a Ukrainian airliner, killing 176 people, and misled the public about the crash for days. Army Maj. 15 Month Old Missing Over Two Months Before Amber Alert

Anons, please pray. Something fishy is happening in East TN. A little girl (Evelyn Boswell) has recently been reported missing, but she hasn't been seen since December 26, 2019.

From what I've been able to gather, young mom and young dad (in the military in Louisiana) with shared custody. Dad's family hadn't seen the youngin since the day after Christmas (common in shared custody settings, one gets the holiday, the other gets right after) and every time they asked to see her, the mother's family just kept delaying. Finally, after 2-1/2 months of this, the situation came to a head when the father's family realized the little girl wasn't even with the mother's family. Mother's family are trashy, with the little girl's grandmother having had two different young boyfriends in the time the little girl has been alive, and the mom of the little girl just smirks at cameras when asked about where the little girl is.

The family claims they have no idea where she is, but the TBI (Tennessee's version of the FBI) is pursuing the vehicle belonging to one of the mom's boyfriends, who they believe has the daughter. Who he has literally no relation to.

After photos surfaced of the little girl being bruised/possibly abused in EVERY SINGLE PHOTO on social media, and the fact not a single member of her mother's family even had any pictures of her (usually excited grandparents) it's becoming apparent no one cares about her in her mother's family, which creates the perfect situation for some potential human-trafficking or selling the little girl for money.

The news spread from Eastern TN to nearby SWVA (Buchanan County and Tazewell County) and into Mingo County, WV, and from there it spread like wildfire and now has the country enthralled with it.

Some are even calling it Casey Anthony 2.0 and though I fear the worst, I ask anons to pray for her and that she is found swiftly and safely and brought home swiftly and safely to the family that loves her. Any digging you join me in is appreciated, but even if your prayers are all you can offer, that can move mountains.

Trump: Jared Kushner is the ‘father of criminal justice reform’

President Trump is using his administration’s successful campaign for criminal justice reform as a key to wooing blacks and poor Americans to his reelection campaign, but in a rare move this week, took a step back to give credit for the effort to his son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner.

In Las Vegas Thursday to address ex-prison inmates making the shift to freedom, Trump praised Kushner repeatedly.

“Is Jared around?” he said. “Jared Kushner ... the father of criminal justice reform. He really is. I mean, he works so hard,” Trump said at the commencement address at the Hope for Prisoners graduation ceremony.

FBI agents search home, business of Tennessee state senator

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Federal authorities in Tennessee conducted searches Friday at the home and business addresses of Democratic state Sen. Katrina Robinson, the FBI said.

Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman Joel Siskovic confirmed that agents executed search warrants at two locations in Memphis. They are listed as addresses for Robinson's residence and her nursing school, Healthcare Institute Inc.

The FBI declined to discuss any additional details of the searches and the U.S. attorney's office in Memphis said it "will not comment on the nature or progress of any FBI activities before charges are publicly filed."

No one responded Friday to a knock on the door of the school, which sits in a strip mall in southeast Memphis. Robinson didn't immediately return phone and email messages seeking comment. Her legislative office forwarded a request to a Senate Democratic Caucus spokesman.

"We've been made aware of the investigation and have received no indication that it relates to the legislature or her legislative service,"said Brandon Puttbrese, spokesman for the Senate Democratic Caucus. "Because the investigation is ongoing, we will not be making additional statements and will defer any further questions to Sen. Robinson's attorney."

Puttbrese also said the caucus' thoughts are with Robinson and her family. Robinson was elected to the state Senate out of a Memphis district in 2018. Edward L. Stanton II of Butler Snow LLP emailed a statement saying only that he had been retained by Robinson "in connection with today's events."

The school's website says it received a $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a certified nursing assistant program focused on geriatric populations and educational programs. The school was founded in January 2015. Its certified nursing assistant program was introduced that July. The school also includes phlebotomy and electrocardiographic technician instruction.

HOBART, Ind. - A northwestern Indiana couple allegedly used a car to force two teenage boys off a road, angered that the twin brothers were riding bicycles adorned with flags supporting President Donald Trump, before ripping one of the sibling's flag from his bike, police said Friday.

Hobart police said Snapchat videos helped officers secure charges against Kyren Gregory Perry-Jones, 23, and Cailyn Marie Smith, 18, in connection with a July 22 incident.

Police Capt. James Gonzales said the Hobart couple are accused of driving in their car, running the 14-year-old boys off of the road, and making threats toward them.

Both Perry-Jones and Smith have been charged with two felony counts of intimidation and criminal recklessnes. They were also charged with one count each of theft and criminal mischief, both of which are misdemeanors.

Country singer Lindsey Lagestee, of Dixie Crush, is dead at 25

Lindsey Lagestee, a founding member and lead female singer of Chicago-based, country music cover band Dixie Crush, has died at 25.

Lagestee was on her way to a concert at Firewater Saloon on Feb. 14 when she was hit by a car, the band’s Jim Nonneman told Taste of Country. “She had just parked a couple of blocks down for the club we were scheduled to play. She exited her pickup truck and was making her way to the venue when she was struck by a car.”

She died from her injuries on Monday, reportedly at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill.

In a Facebook post, the band called her death a “senseless tragedy.”

“From the very beginning, everyone knew she was something special. Her Uncle Tony described her best as a supernova. Above and beyond her beautiful voice, Lindsey just had a way of connecting with every audience leaving an indelible impression,” the post read. “Not only would she give an amazing performance, but after every show, Lindsey would come offstage, take time to meet anyone who wanted to say hi, take pictures, and build friendships.”

Band members said they’d played more than 250 shows in the past five years, and Lagestee “put her heart and soul into every song...every performance,” whether it was a handful of bar patrons or a crowd of thousands.

“Above and beyond being an incredible performer, great friend, and the best bandmate, Lindsey was a loving daughter to Linda and Vaughn, compassionate sister to Lauren, Carrie, and Samantha, adoring aunt to Andrew, Colin, Danielle, Alexander, and Amber, and wonderful girlfriend to Kevin,” they shared.

Lagestee’s fellow Dixie Crush members and fans left tributes and condolences on the Facebook post. They shared stories of Lagestee showing up to sing at the funeral of a fan, not because she was hired to do so but just because she wanted to be there; taking the time to meet with fans at her shows; and always offering a kind spirit.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (AP) — A Pennsylvania firefighter has been charged with trying to arrange a meeting for sex with a 10-year-old girl, according to federal documents from the Eastern District of Virginia.

Brian Kosanovich, 50, of Pittsburgh, was arrested at a Chili's restaurant in Midlothian, Virginia, on Tuesday by agents with the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force, news outlets reported. The man had traveled there to meet with a woman he met online who said she had a 10-year-old daughter, according to the court documents obtained by news outlets. The woman was actually an undercover FBI agent.

Prince, who once moved to the United Arab Emirates to avoid being caught up in a federal prosecution, immediately dismissed the associate’s concerns. He was untouchable, he bragged, and would face no legal troubles.

“Not under this guy,” Prince said referring to President Donald Trump, according to a person with direct knowledge of the exchange.

It's hard to believe he would say something so stupid considering what's happened to Stone, Flynn, Manafort, etc.

That assumption is about to be tested.

Prince, an heir to a billion-dollar fortune who is widely viewed as a shadow adviser to the president, is under federal investigation for his 2015 attempt to modify two American-made crop-dusting planes into attack aircraft — a violation of arms trafficking regulations — two people familiar with the investigation told The Intercept. The planes became part of private military services Prince proposed to sell or use in mercenary operations in Africa and Azerbaijan, as The Intercept has previously reported.

The investigation into the modified crop dusters is one of several ongoing probes targeting Prince. Another focuses on the allegations that he lied to Congress during the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russia’s 2016 presidential election interference; a third concerns a 2017 armed aviation proposal to the UAE, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Under normal circumstances, this would not be an issue. Servants of the establishment are allowed to engage in brazenly criminal behavior without facing any repercussions.

Former FBI director James Comey, for example, was allowed to entrap Michael Flynn and then go on MSNBC and laugh about "[getting] away with" it without facing any charges.

Putin & Erdogan to ‘intensify contacts’ over Syria, but no sign of peace in Idlib yet

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan talked Syria over the phone, as their troops squared off in Idlib province. The topics of Syrian sovereignty and terrorist threat loomed large.

Putin expressed “serious concern about the ongoing aggressive actions of extremist groups,” and emphasized the need for “unconditional respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Syria, the Kremlin readout of Friday’s phone conversation said. Moscow and Ankara agreed to “intensify bilateral interagency consultations on Idlib,” along with intensive military contacts.

It wasn’t clear how that would translate on the ground in Idlib, where Turkey keeps sending troops and tanks.

Ankara’s redout provided to the Turkish press says that Erdogan told Putin that “Assad regime's actions and the consequent humanitarian crisis must be stopped in Idlib.”

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul ahead of the phone call with Putin, the Turkish leader said there will not be a truce unless the Syrian forces stop their “cruelty.”

"Unless the regime stops the persecution of the people of Idlib at this point, it is not possible to withdraw from there,” Erdogan said, according to Daily Sabah.

Facebook Offers to Pay For Users’ Private Data Including Voice Records

After facing criticism from the public and lawmakers over the non-consensual collection of data, Facebook has started offering to pay its users for personal information including recordings of their own voice.

The recordings, made through its new market research app Viewpoints, will help to train the speech recognition system that powers Facebook’s Portal device which the company has high hopes will become a contender with other voice assistants, including Amazon’s Echo speakers and its Alexa virtual assistant.

The Viewpoints app, which was revealed three months ago as a portal for conducting surveys about user experiences, began to invite users in the US to say “Hey Portal” and the names of up to 10 friends. The recording process is giving users points which can be converted into a $5 cash reward.

Facebook has indicated that Viewpoint was initially designed to “improve speech understanding” by training machine-learning algorithms, which require a large number of examples to improve their accuracy and performance.

“Participants record phrases within the app, which helps us improve name pronunciation recognition in our products to better serve the people that use them,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

In the description on the service’s website, the social media giant wrote that the information gathered with Viewpoint activity won’t be shared on Facebook or on other linked accounts without users’ permission, or be sold to third parties. However, the Viewpoints data policy notes that some information collected using the app, such as payment and device data, can be used to personalize other Facebook apps and target advertising. It could also be shared with “research partners,” including academics, publishers and advertisers, however, Facebook promised that users will be notified if this happens.

Makers of smart speakers including Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google faced criticism last year when it was revealed that they were sending users’ voice recordings to human moderators without the consent or awareness of the customers. The media companies promised to stop such practices and ended their partnerships with several data centres worldwide.

Delingpole: Now Boris’s Green Gestapo Are Coming for Your Coal Fires

Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s latest green assault on property rights and freedom is to ban coal fires.

From February next year, bags of traditional house coal will be banned from sale, with deliveries of loose coal phased out by 2023. There will also be restrictions on the kind of wood you are allowed to burn, newly cut (green) wood to be made illegal.

Together with a mooted ban on gas-fired boilers and gas-fired cookers — both extremely popular in the country — the new, green-obsessed administration appears to be signalling that an Englishman’s home is no longer his castle and that his hearth now belongs to the government.

This intrusive and vexatious act of gesture politics will, of course, make no measurable difference to ‘climate change’. But it will hurt lots of rural households where the glow of a coal fire is still a welcome respite from the damp and misery of a country winter; and also working-class communities in areas like the north of England, where coal is still a source of convenient and cheap energy.

Among those condemning the decision is science writer, environmentalist and peer Lord Ridley, who says:

“In the northeast of England, especially in rural areas, there are many people who still heat their homes with coal, in some cases by preference rather than for want of alternatives. It’s cheap and they only pay when they need to. This ban will hit poor people in rural areas, where there is not an air pollution problem anyway. Plus, bizarrely, you get a higher — yes, higher!! — energy-performance certificate for a house with a coal-fired heating system than one using oil or gas. So the requirement to pass an EPC test before selling or renting a house could make houses unsellable if they are forced to spend a lot of money converting to gas. This has not been thought through, and it is a move that could have been designed to punish northerners.”

Benny Peiser, director of the Global Warming Policy Forum, echoes Ridley’s concerns. He says:

“This is really, really stupid. Boris seems to be doing everything possible to make life more difficult for as many people as possible. Eventually, just like Macron in France, he’ll pay a huge price for this.”

The ban on domestic coal and wet wood was announced by Environment Secretary George ‘Useless’ Eustice, who said:

“Cosy open fires and wood-burning stoves are at the heart of many homes up and down the country, but the use of certain fuels means that they are also the biggest source of the most harmful pollutant that is affecting people in the UK. By moving toward the use of cleaner fuels such as dry wood we can all play a part in improving the health of millions of people.”

This health claim is at best moot. First, coal fires are already banned where they are likely to pose any kind of health threat — in towns and cities. Second, as Steve Milloy has demonstrated, the threat of small particulate pollution — notably PM2.5 — has been massively oversold by the environmental lobby.

No one needs more evidence that Rod Blagojevich is corrupt.

The Sun-Times dug some up anyway, and the latest round of Blago shadiness goes all the way to the top.

Turns out that when the former governor instituted a state-hiring freeze back in 2003, it was just a ruse so that he could do favors for a bunch of politically connected buddies. He ended up hiring just over 2,500 people during the so-called freeze.

But these weren’t ordinary applicants; politicians, including then-state-senator Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, pushed all the job seekers on Blago.

None of the politicians in the report are accused of doing anything wrong - leaning on clout is the status quo in Springfield - but the report does illustrate the insider game that occurs on all levels of government.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the guy who nailed Blago, said in a 2006 letter that there were "very serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud" under the former governor.

Obama, for his part, sent Blagojevich a list of 16 people that he would have liked to see get sweet jobs.

He got five of them through. Two of them landed $75,000 a year jobs as administrators at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Affairs and the Department of Children and Family Services.

"I think we submitted just a list of people that were mostly, you know, some of them were people who'd sent us resumes in the past or other people we thought ... might be interested," Obama said. "But they weren't people who were connected to our political organization in any meaningful way. Or they weren't people I knew particularly well."

Hillary Clinton sponsored her childhood friend Voda “Betsy” Eveling for a job transfer within the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

Rahm Emanuel sponsored seven people, and got four hired.

The list goes on to include Alderman Ed Burke, Senate candidate Cheryle Jackson, Tony Rezko and others.

The clout list likely won’t have any effect on Blago’s upcoming trial.

Twitter is preparing to roll out more ways it intends to censor and "label" speech. The company is also experimenting with giving only blue checkmark "verified" fact-checkers and journalists the power to identify "lies" and label and edit accordingly. What could possibly go wrong?

"Twitter is experimenting with adding brightly colored labels directly beneath lies and misinformation posted by politicians and other public figures, according to a leaked demo of new features" obtained by NBC, which first broke the story Thursday.

"We're exploring a number of ways to address misinformation and provide more context for tweets on Twitter," a Twitter spokesperson said. "Misinformation is a critical issue and we will be testing many different ways to address it."

Get ready for a potential new Twitter where essentially all utterances and perspectives on controversial events and data will have to pass through blue checkmark gatekeepers.

On May 16, 2017, U.S. Attorney John Huber wrote to Rosenstein: “Rod, We’re proud of you.” Later that year, Huber was chosen by then-Attorney General Sessions to head up the Clinton Foundation investigation.

(On May 17, 2017, Robert Mueller was appointed by Rosenstein as special counsel.)

The documents revealed that Rosenstein had communications with Washington Post reporter Sari Horwitz that included multiple off-the-record calls, information sharing, and smoothing over arguments with the DOJ press office.

In an email exchange on May 12, 2017, with the subject line “Off the record” Horwitz complains to Rosenstein about then-DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores yelling at her and the Washington Post’s national security editor and calling a story of theirs “bullshit.” Rosenstein replies, “I will talk to Sarah.” Horwitz adds that she is “around all night if [Rosenstein wants] to talk off the record.”

In an email exchange between May 13-16, 2017, Horwitz requests that they speak off the record again. Rosenstein replied by sending her a link to a story about him in The Baltimore Sun.

On May 18, 2017, Horwitz emails Rosenstein with the subject line, “Urgent” to ask him about President Trump being the focus of an FBI investigation: “The Washington Post has been told by very good sources that President Trump is now a focus of the FBI investigation Can I please talk to you as soon as possible on deep background?”

We don’t know for sure who Senate Candidate 5 is. But we’ll likely find out. So it’s worth understanding what his or her (though it appears to be his) alleged role in the affair is.

For Candidate 5, the most damaging passage in the document is this:

On December 4, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH spoke to Advisor B and informed Advisor B that he was giving Senate Candidate 5 greater consideration for the Senate seat because, among other reasons, if ROD BLAGOJEVICH ran for re-election Senate Candidate 5 would “raise money” for ROD BLAGOJEVICH, although ROD BLAGOJEVICH said he might “get some (money) up front, maybe” from Senate Candidate 5 to insure Senate Candidate 5 kept his promise about raising money for ROD BLAGOJEVICH. (In a recorded conversation on October 31, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH described an earlier approach by an associate of Senate Candidate Five as follows: “We were approached ‘pay to play.’ That, you know, he’d raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator.”)

That last part, in which the governor says he was approached by an “emissary” from Candidate 5 proposing a pay-to-play deal for Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat, is the key. Though it’s worth noting, of course, that Blagojevich hardly has a reputation for honesty.

Later on December 4, 2008, ROD BLAGOJEVICH spoke to Fundraiser A. ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated he was “elevating” Senate Candidate 5 on the list of candidates for the open Senate seat. ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided ROD BLAGOJEVICH with something “tangible up front.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH noted he was going to meet with Senate Candidate 5 in the next few days. ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A to reach out to Individual D, an individual who ROD BLAGOJEVICH is attempting to obtain campaign contributions from and who, based on intercepted phone calls, ROD BLAGOJEVICH believes to be close to Senate Candidate 5. ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A to tell Individual D that Senate Candidate 5 was very much a realistic candidate for the open Senate seat, but that ROD BLAGOJEVICH was getting “a lot of pressure” not to appoint Senate Candidate 5. ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A to tell Individual D that ROD BLAGOJEVICH had a problem with Senate Candidate 5 just promising to help ROD BLAGOJEVICH because ROD BLAGOJEVICH had a prior bad experience with Senate Candidate 5 not keeping his word. ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A to tell Individual D that if Senate Candidate 5 is going to be chosen to fill the Senate seat “some of this stuffs gotta start happening now . . .right now. . . and we gotta see it. You understand?”

ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A that “you gotta be careful how you express that and assume everybody’s listening, the whole world is listening. You hear me?” ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A to tell Individual D if there is “tangible political support (campaign contributions) like you’ve said, start showing us now.” Fundraiser A stated he will call Individual D on the phone to communicate ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s message. ROD BLAGOJEVICH responded that “I would do it in person. I would not do it on the phone.” ROD BLAGOJEVICH told Fundraiser A to communicate the “urgency” of the situation to Individual D.

So it certainly seems clear that the governor believed Candidate 5 would play along — though that’s not proof that he was correct in that assumption.
