Polygamists may not face jail time under new Utah bill

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Polygamists have lived in Utah since before it became a state. Eighty-five years after plural marriage was declared a felony, they still number in the thousands and have even been featured in the long-running reality TV show, “Sister Wives.”

Now, a state lawmaker says it’s time to remove the threat of jail time for otherwise law-abiding polygamists.

“The law is a failure. It hasn’t stopped polygamy at all and it’s actually enabled abuse to occur and remain unchecked,” said Sen. Deidre Henderson, a Republican. Her proposal to make bigamy an infraction rather than a felony has gathered significant support. It was unanimously approved by a legislative panel Monday, despite resistance from former members of polygamous groups who said it could embolden abusers.

The estimated 30,000 people living in Utah’s polygamous communities believe plural marriage brings exaltation in heaven — a legacy of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The mainstream faith abandoned the practice in 1890 under pressure from the U.S. government and now strictly forbids it.

Unlike other states, Utah outlaws living with a second “spiritual spouse” even if the man is legally married to just one woman.

Henderson argues that law, and the legacy of raids as recently as the 1950s, has created a culture of fear that empowers notorious abusers like the polygamous leader Warren Jeffs. His followers wear distinctive, historic-looking dresses, and he is now serving a life prison sentence in Texas for sexually assaulting girls he considered plural wives.

On the other end of the spectrum are modern, consenting adult polygamists like Kody Brown of TV’s “Sister Wives." The show chronicling the lives of Brown and his four wives premiered on TLC in 2010.

The Utah attorney general has publicly declined to prosecute polygamists like him for years, but the bigamy law remains on the books. The “Sister Wives” family left the state shortly after going public with their TV show, saying they were afraid of being charged by local prosecutors.

They later lost an attempt to overturn the polygamy law in court.

The new proposal would significantly lower the potential penalties for consenting adult polygamists but keep harsher penalties for other crimes sometimes linked to polygamy, including the new addition of coerced marriage. Some pro-polygamy advocates have pushed back, arguing that those enhancements create an unfair association with their communities.

Others, though, say that easing restrictions on polygamous marriages won’t do much to help victims and could even make things worse. Melissa Ellis grew up in the polygamous Kingston group and said she worries that leaders could consider it a victory if the state lightened penalties.

“Those men are going to have more power and more control over their victims than they did before,” she said.

A representative for the group did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Ellis also pointed to a recent law that allowed people leaving polygamous groups to access money from the state’s crime-victims fund to help get on their feet. “We need more laws in place that are going to help the victims,” she said.

More than 100 years after Utah's predominant faith abandoned the practice, the state continues to struggle with the best way to deal with polygamy, lawmakers acknowledged.

“At this point, I think this is better than what were doing now,” said Republican Sen. Daniel Thatcher.

Iran fails in satellite launch attempt

Iranian government officials admitted Sunday that an attempt to place a small Earth-imaging satellite into orbit was unsuccessful, the fourth consecutive launch failure for the country’s space program.

A Simorgh rocket launched at around 1545 GMT (10:45 a.m. EST) Sunday from the Imam Khomeini Spaceport, located in Semnan province in the north-central part of the country, according to Iranian government officials and state media sources.

But the Simorgh booster did not place its payload — an Earth observation satellite named Zafar 1 — into orbit as planned, according to Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, Iran’s minister of communications and information technology.

The failure Sunday of the Simorgh rocket, the larger of Iran’s two tested satellite launchers, marked the fourth straight Iranian mission that has failed to place a satellite into orbit since 2017. That does not include an accident in August in which a Safir rocket — Iran’s other orbital-class booster — appeared to explode during preparations on a launch pad at the Iranian spaceport.

In the aftermath of the Aug. 29 explosion, President Trump tweeted an image of the damaged launch pad, in which he denied U.S. involvement. The image was taken by a classified National Reconnaissance Office spy satellite.

Little is known publicly about the imaging capabilities of NRO surveillance satellites, but Trump’s tweet allowed comparisons between the image resolution of NRO spy satellites and commercial imaging platforms.

Iran’s satellite launch program has a mixed record.

The country placed its first satellite into orbit in 2009, then performed successful satellite launches in 2011, 2012 and 2015, all using Safir rockets. All three orbital launch attempts using the larger Simorgh rocket have failed.

Iranian government officials say the country’s space program is pursuing peaceful objectives, but U.S. officials argue the launchers used to put satellites into orbit could also be employed as long-range ballistic missiles.

The U.S. State Department announced sanctions on the Iran Space Agency and two affiliated research organizations in September, days after the launch pad explosion Aug. 29.

“The United States will not allow Iran to use its space launch program as cover to advance its ballistic missile programs,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement. “Iran’s August 29 attempt to launch a space launch vehicle underscores the urgency of the threat. These designations should serve as a warning to the international scientific community that collaborating with Iran’s space program could contribute to Tehran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon delivery system.”

But independent analysts who observe Iran’s rocket program see limited utility in the country’s existing satellite launcher designs for military purposes.

“Iran’s Simorgh SLV (space launch vehicle) is technically similar to North Korea’s space launcher,” tweeted Jeffrey Lewis, an arms control expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California. “When North Korea wanted built an ICBM, it chose a different engine that uses different propellants.”

The Simorgh and Safir rockets are liquid-fueled, which makes them more difficult to fire off quickly, limiting their military effectiveness.

Iran’s Mehr News Agency has reported Iran plans to launch a satellite on a solid-fueled booster as soon as this summer.

“A solid fuel (rocket) is a whole different kettle of fish,” Lewis tweeted.

The 249-pound (113-kilogram) Zafar 1 satellite was designed to take pictures of Earth from orbit to assist in mapping applications. The spacecraft was developed by Iranian scientists and was also intended to relay messages between users.

Azari Jahromi, Iran’s communications and information technology minister, tweeted Sunday that the launch of the Zafar 1 had failed.

This week an exhibit about Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg opened at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie.

WGN got a tour from Ginsburg’s son, Jim Ginsburg. He shared his take on growing up Ginsburg. He had two loving parents who were hard-working and career-minded trying to raise a family with all the challenges that go with it.

But watching his mother go from Supreme Court to super star status, has been fun for them all. His mom is learning to laugh at herself and have fun with it all along the way.

The exhibit is a trip down memory lane for Jim Ginsburg and a real education for the rest of us. Some interesting facts: RBG was a baton twirler as a kid. She was the editor of her grade school newspaper. She was was a sorority member at Cornell University. and today, more than ever, has a real passion for opera.

Last month, Recode reported that Jeff Bezos’s top adviser, Maria Renz, had taken a new role at the company. Now we know who her replacement is.

Jeffrey Helbling, most recently a vice president of the Kindle business, is the new technical adviser to the CEO — otherwise known as Bezos’s “shadow,” according to his LinkedIn bio. Helbling has been with Amazon for five years, having spent the previous 14 years at the consultancy McKinsey & Company.

The “shadow” role is one of the most coveted positions at Amazon, since the executive spends one to two years working by Bezos’s side on a daily basis, and traveling with the CEO, as well. These executives often end up running important businesses inside of Amazon afterward, such as Amazon AWS (Andy Jassy) and Amazon India (Amit Agarwal).

Renz, who held the position before Helbling, was the first woman to serve in this role, and remains the only one as of now. She is currently the vice president of delivery experience at Amazon.

Corey Feldman, a former child actor who grew up in Hollywood, says that he and his wife needed to hire 24-hour armed security to protect them as Feldman prepares for the release of his “Truth” documentary, which promises to expose the child abuse that has been rampant in Hollywood for generations.

Feldman has been working on the project for a few years now, and says that he has had trouble finding platforms to host or produce the film, because all of the studios are tied in with Hollywood and not willing to rock the boat. He also says that he has received numerous threats after he announced that he was going to be working on the project. The project has been so controversial because Feldman has promised to drop the names of some of the most notorious child abusers in the industry.

Feldman claims that he has been the target of several violent attacks over the past few years since he announced the film. In one case, the former child star was rushed to the hospital after he was stabbed with a foreign object while he was sitting in his car at a stop light. He has referred to the group who is trying to silence him as the “wolfpack.” Feldman also said that he has also been receiving a large volume of threatening calls, emails and messages on social media.

The film will also feature the story of Feldman’s best childhood friend, the late actor Corey Haim who he appeared in numerous films with. Feldman says that Haim suffered some very extreme abuse while he was in the industry, which he believes resulted in Haim’s untimely death. Feldman says that he made a promise to Haim to expose the abusers if he happened to be the first of the two to pass away.

In a December 2018 Congressional hearing on Not-for-Profit Charities with a Specific Case Study on the Clinton Foundation, our nation was introduced to two private individuals who had undertaken a multi-year investigative probe of the 43rd President's foundation.

Larry Doyle and John Moynihan informed those observing that they filed a formal Whistleblower Submission replete with a hundred-plus formal exhibits in excess of 6,000 pages of evidence with the Internal Revenue Service on the Clinton Foundation in August 2017. They further testified that they had submitted the same materials to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and selected US Attorneys in the Department of Justice as well and that their documents included:

reviews of the foundation's tax returns and those of the foundation's donors

reviews including audits of the foundation's programs and operations, foreign and domestic

email exchanges between foundation executives and foreign government officials

contracts with foreign governments and engagements with other public and private entities

reviews of partnerships with an array of private companies, private universities, and other 501c3 public charities

interviews with both current and former senior Clinton Foundation officials

reviews of state registration materials

documents covering the foundation's own internal reviews

During the hearing, Doyle and Moynihan highlighted that they believe the evidence they presented in their submission provided probable cause that the Clinton Foundation violated IRS codes relating to the Organization and Operational Tests for a 501c3 public charity with specific details addressing Misrepresentations and Misuse of Donated Public Funds. On top of that, they also addressed their probable cause assertion that the Clinton Foundation acted as an agent in violation of IRS code and the Foreign Agent Registration Act. These whistleblowers also highlighted that private foundations, including the Gates Foundation, that have donated to the Clinton Foundation are themselves subject to taxation based on IRS codes relating to Donors' Responsibilities. Ultimately, Doyle and Moynihan maintained that the Clinton Foundation could be subject to paying tax on anywhere from $400mm to potentially as much as $2.5 billion of revenue.

These whistleblowers informed those watching that the IRS had issued a Preliminary Denial of their Submission shortly before they provided their riveting testimony to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee during that December 13, 2018 hearing.

During that hearing, Moynihan specifically emphasized that their submission was "a tax claim". Moynihan also informed those on the committee that depending on how the IRS ruled that the two whistleblowers would have other causes of action that they could and would pursue including filing an appeal to the US Tax Court if in fact they received a Final Denial from the IRS.

Another Home Run: the Ukrainian Conflict

There’s no doubt about Soros’s great influence on US foreign policy. In an October 1995 PBS interview with Charlie Rose, he said, “I do now have access [to US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott]. There is no question. We actually work together [on Eastern European policy].”

Soros’s meddling reared its ugly head again in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which began in early 2014.

In a May 2014 interview with CNN, Soros stated he was responsible for establishing a foundation in the Ukraine that ultimately led to the overthrow of the country’s elected leader and the installation of a junta handpicked by the US State Department, at the time headed by none other than Hillary Clinton:

CNN Host: First on Ukraine, one of the things that many people recognized about you was that you during the revolutions of 1989 funded a lot of dissident activities, civil society groups in Eastern Europe and Poland, the Czech Republic. Are you doing similar things in Ukraine?

Soros: Well, I set up a foundation in Ukraine before Ukraine became independent of Russia. And the foundation has been functioning ever since and played an important part in events now.

The war that ripped through the Ukrainian region of Donbass resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 people and the displacement of over 1.4 million people. As collateral damage, a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet was shot down, killing all 298 on board.

But once again Soros was there to profit from the chaos he helped create. His prize in Ukraine was the state-owned energy monopoly Naftogaz.

Soros again had his US cronies, Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew and US consulting company McKinsey, advise the puppet government of Ukraine to privatize Naftogaz.

Although Soros’s exact stake in Naftogaz has not been disclosed, in a 2014 memo he pledged to invest up to $1 billion in Ukrainian businesses, but no other Ukrainian holdings have since been reported.

Amazon is taking the Pentagon to court. The company is alleging "unmistakable bias" on the government's part in awarding a massive military tech contract to rival Microsoft.

This begins a new chapter in the protracted and contentious battle over the biggest cloud-computing contract in U.S. history — called JEDI, for Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure — worth up to $10 billion over 10 years.

The Pentagon declared Microsoft the winner of JEDI on Oct. 25, after months of delays, investigations and controversy — at first, over accusations of a cozy relationship between Amazon and the Department of Defense, and later, over President Trump's public criticism of Amazon.

In a statement on Thursday, Amazon's cloud unit argued that "numerous aspects of the JEDI evaluation process contained clear deficiencies, errors, and unmistakable bias- and it's important that these matters be examined and rectified." The company is appealing the contract at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.

Good morning. Thank you all for traveling to be here today in our nation’s capital. Grady, thank you for that kind introduction, and, furthermore, for leading this great organization, which serves as a united and powerful voice on many issues of public concern.

It is a tremendous honor to accept the MCSA President’s Award. The Major County Sheriffs of America are guardians of our nation’s rule of law. You play a central role in keeping the American people safe.

The Department of Justice has no higher priority than the safety and security of this country. We can only accomplish that mission through a close partnership with you, our local law enforcement partners. This administration is dedicated to strengthening our partnerships, enhancing cooperation, and delivering the resources that state, local, and tribal law enforcement need to succeed.

Each of you has selflessly chosen to devote your lives to law enforcement. As I have said before, there is no more noble profession in our country today.

You and your deputies face unprecedented challenges. Every day, deputies head out on patrol, never knowing precisely what trials they will face. And the list of assignments we give our deputies and officers keeps getting longer and longer. We no longer merely ask them to keep us safe – we ask them to manage the fallout from a vast range of social pathologies, such as mental illness, widespread homelessness, and drug abuse. It is quite a lot to ask men and women trained to protect the public from dangerous criminals to simultaneously do the jobs of social workers and psychiatrists. Yet our committed law enforcement officers do their best to carry these ever-expanding burdens.

This administration understands that. Rest assured that we will continue to have your back as we work together to protect the public.

A week ago today, President Trump delivered his third State of the Union Address. He said there – as he has said many times before – that we need to support the men and women of law enforcement at every level. Indeed, I think I can safely say that our police officers have no greater champion today than President Trump. And we all know that, unlike most politicians, when this President promises to do something, he does it. He loves this country. He especially loves you, those who strive every day to keep the country safe.

In his State of the Union, President Trump delivered a message of genuine optimism, filled with an unapologetic faith in God, in American greatness, and in the common virtues of the American people: altruism, industriousness, self-reliance, and generosity.

But he also emphasized something I fully believe. That is that the people cannot enjoy freedom and achieve prosperity without the rule of law to protect them. And there can be no rule of law without brave deputies and police officers on the front lines upholding it.

Our shared commitment to the rule of law is central to the Department of Justice initiatives in which many of you participate. For example, Project Safe Neighborhoods, Operation Relentless Pursuit, and Project Guardian are reducing violent crime across our country. Together, we are battling gun violence, gangs, and human trafficking. We are aggressively fighting the drug war. As the President mentioned last week, we have begun to successfully overcome the opioid epidemic – drug overdose deaths have declined for the first time in nearly three decades. And we are escalating our fight against methamphetamine.

Last month, we implemented President Trump’s Executive Order directing us to establish the Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice. This is the first commission on law enforcement since President Lyndon Johnson’s Commission in 1965, and I think we can all agree that it is long overdue. This Commission is bringing together all of the law enforcement community of our country to study the unique challenges facing us today and develop strategies to address them. I am looking forward to working with the Major County Sheriffs on this important effort.

I know the department’s grant funding provides crucial support to state and local law enforcement. After I took office, I directed the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to implement a series of changes designed to streamline the grant-making process.

It was brought to my attention that some jurisdictions are foregoing grant opportunities because of onerous application and compliance requirements. I directed both OJP and COPS to reduce these burdens. To this end, COPS is decreasing the number of monitoring reports an agency is subject to from quarterly to semi-annually. And it is my intent that we go to a yearly reporting system. Additionally, COPS has reduced the length of its grant applications by 40 percent. More can, and will, be done.

We are trying to be responsive to the field and the feedback we received from our listening sessions conducted by COPS, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance has proven invaluable. Your comments on violent crime issues, the meth epidemic, and grant application process and its frustrations are being addressed

Lastly, I am aware that the funding a sheriff ultimately receives from our grants is significantly reduced because of state or local government pass-through costs. I support your request for sheriffs to have access to direct funding, which would alleviate the administrative burdens and costs of the current system.

Let me turn my attention to two substantial challenges to the rule of law we face today: so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions and, what I’ve been calling them, rogue DAs, who undermine – rather than advance – our ability to carry out effective law enforcement.

We will only be able to effectively support our over-burdened police and overcome their daunting challenges if federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies trust each other and work together.

But some state and local politicians have taken the precise opposite approach. Rather than work together with the federal government to discharge our shared duty, they do everything they can to impede federal law enforcement. The politicians who have established sanctuary jurisdictions apparently believe it is more important to help criminal aliens evade the law than it is to protect the safety of law-abiding individuals.

And I want to be clear who I am talking about. These policies are designed to protect, and do protect, criminal aliens – that is, aliens whom state or local police have arrested for some other state or local crime.

These policies have nothing to do with people who came to this country illegally, but have otherwise tried to be productive and peaceful members of our society. The very purpose of these policies is to release criminals onto the streets rather than turn them over to federal law enforcement for deportation as federal law requires.

Americans everywhere bear the cost of such policies. Innocent people are threatened and hurt by criminal aliens whom local jurisdictions have set free in the face of federal immigration detainers. Law enforcement officers in the field are put in harm’s way when criminals are freed rather than deported. And tragically, it is often the very immigrant communities that these policies supposedly protect that are most harmed when criminal aliens are returned to the streets.

These sorts of sanctuary policies also put several of you in an impossible position. State or local political leaders pass laws or enact policies that forbid you from cooperating with federal law enforcement. And you are then caught between these misguided rules and your duty to protect your community by turning over criminal aliens to federal law enforcement.

But help is on the way. We at the Justice Department believe, and are currently arguing in court, that many of the laws and rules in sanctuary jurisdictions are unlawful. States do not have the power to regulate the presence of aliens in the United States in a way that obstructs Congress’s regulation of aliens.

The Department of Justice has therefore taken concrete steps to eliminate the dangerous laws and policies in these sanctuary jurisdictions.

Foremost, the department sued the State of California to enjoin numerous state laws that attempted to frustrate federal immigration enforcement. We prevailed on several of our claims in the lower courts, and we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will grant our request to review the remaining issues and side with us against California’s obstructionist policies.

The department yesterday filed a complaint against the State of New Jersey seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against its laws that forbid state and local law enforcement from sharing vital information about criminal aliens with DHS.

Yesterday, we also filed a complaint seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against King County, Washington – which includes the city of Seattle – for a policy it recently adopted that forbids DHS from deporting aliens from the United States using King County International Airport.

We have filed legal briefs in dozens of cases at the federal, state, and local levels to defend the lawful authority of our state and local law enforcement partners to work with DHS. We filed the most recent of these briefs about two weeks ago to support a case involving Sheriff Robert A. Nolan of Cape May County, New Jersey.

We are reviewing the practices, policies, and laws of other jurisdictions across the country. This includes assessing whether jurisdictions are complying with our criminal laws, in particular the criminal statute that prohibits the harboring or shielding of aliens in the United States.

We are supporting DHS in its effort to use all lawful means to obtain the information it needs to carry out its mission. That includes the use of federal subpoenas to access information about criminal aliens in the custody of uncooperative jurisdictions. We have taken and will take all appropriate action in federal court to ensure compliance with these federal subpoenas.

We have prioritized our discretionary grant programs to give preference to jurisdictions that cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts, and the Ninth Circuit has upheld our authority to do so.

We are continuing to fight for our authority to condition certain formula grants upon compliance with all applicable federal laws, including statutes prohibiting states from enacting laws and policies that restrict information sharing with the federal government.

We have made clear to various jurisdictions that public areas of public facilities, like courthouses in states across the country, must be accessible to federal law enforcement officers.

The Department of Justice will continue to be vigilant and will take action against any jurisdiction that or individual politician who unlawfully obstructs the enforcement of federal immigration law.

Another similar problem is the increasing number of district attorneys who have fashioned for themselves a new role of judge-legislator-prosecutor. These self-styled “social justice” reformers are refusing to enforce entire categories of law, including law against resisting police officers. In so doing, these DAs are putting everyone in danger.

Their policies are pushing a number of America’s cities back toward a more dangerous past. Under the district attorney in Philadelphia, the murder rate in that city is at its highest point in over a decade. Other cities with these “progressive” DAs – like San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Chicago, and Baltimore – have all suffered historic levels of homicide and other violent crime. This is while crime nationwide, generally, is going down.

The policies of these DAs strike at the very root of our law enforcement system. Our system is based on graduated response, where we impose increasingly severe punishments based on an individual’s criminal history. This means we have to have accurate criminal histories if we are going to be able to protect the community. Even if we are going to treat early, and petty offenses leniently, we still need them charged and recorded so we know who we are dealing with as time goes by. Our whole system is undermined by the practice of ignoring whole categories of criminal offenses.

The policies of these DAs also sabotage the effectiveness of community policing and “precision” policing, which depend heavily on obtaining information from members of the community. When DAs engage in catch-and-release and revolving-door policies, people in the neighborhood who might otherwise provide information are scared to come forward. These innocent people are rightly worried that the offender will be right back out on the street in a position to do them harm. In some jurisdictions we are already seeing effective policing – that has taken decades of painstaking work to build – being dramatically undermined. Just in New York the other day, there was the case involving the MS-13 member who was released. A member of the community provided evidence, and was killed by an MS-13 member who was released under new legal reforms in New York state.

These DAs think they are helping people, but they end up hurting them. These policies actually lead to greater criminality. Not always, but often enough, early intervention can help – with young people, in particular. By allowing young lawbreakers entirely off the hook the first time – or the second time or even the third time – these DAs are potentially placing them on a conveyor to further and heightened criminality, which puts them at greater peril – both on the street from other criminals and from law enforcement when these young offenders graduate from petty to serious offenses, as many will if there is no intervention early on.

We have seen these policies before. They reigned supreme at the state level from the 1960s to the early 1990s. During this time, violent crime rates tripled in our country. They peaked in 1991 and 1992. By that time, the country had had enough. Following the lead of the policies of the Reagan, H.W. Bush administrations, the states started to make their systems tougher on crime.

We understood that because crime, particularly violent crime, is committed by a small segment of our population, repeat offenders need to be taken off the streets. Federal, state, and local law enforcement formed a strong partnership to get these violent offenders off our streets and keep them off.

We had tremendous success. Since 1992, violent crime was cut in half nationwide. It went up a bit in the last two years of the Obama administration, but since the beginning of the Trump administration, we have succeeded in pushing it back down. We cannot allow all our hard work over the last 30 years to be undone by the wrong-headed policies of these so-called “reform” DAs.

A third whistle-blower has come forward to corroborate the previous complaints that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) tried to suppress evidence-gathering in the Douma probe, a report says.

The alleged new whistleblower, whose redacted email was shared by the Grayzone Project on Tuesday, backed the complaints made by two former OPCW employees — South African engineer and organization's veteran Ian Henderson, and another whistleblower known as 'Alex.'

OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias had earlier dismissed the pair — dubbed Inspector A and Inspector B in the organization's inquiry into their claims — as low-level rogue employees who conducted field work without proper authorization and which simply "could not accept that their views were not backed by evidence."

However, the person, described by Grayzone as a former senior official with the OPCW, stood by Henderson and 'Alex,' writing that his time with the organization was "the most stressful and unpleasant" one in his life.

I feel ashamed for the Organization and I am glad I left it.

"I fear those behind the crimes that have been perpetrated in the name of 'humanity and democracy,' they will not hesitate to do harm to me and my family," the person wrote, explaining the decision to remain anonymous.

Henderson was deployed with the fact-finding mission to Syria shortly after the alleged chemical attack in Douma. The inspector concluded that the cylinders, supposedly containing chlorine, were more likely manually placed on the ground rather than dropped from planes. According to him, the higher-ups discarded his findings without explanation, and sidelined him from the rest of the mission. Its final report was later used by the US and some European countries to implicate the Syrian government of Bashar Assad in conducting the attack, which the Syrian authorities vehemently deny.

The Grayzone published what they say is a written copy of Henderson's testimony at the UN in January this year.

According to the document, two senior fact-finding mission (FFM) officials refused to formally accept Henderson's engineering report on Douma upon its completion. The inspector unlimitedly submitted the report to OPCW's secure archive himself. But the Chief of OPCW Director-General's Cabinet instructed Henderson in an email to "remove the document from the Registry, and remove all traces, if any, of its delivery and storage there," Henderson's testimony reads.

In his alleged testimony, Henderson also refuted the claim that he was a low-level employee by pointing out that he served as "inspector/team leader," up until he was suspended in mid-May 2019. Grayzone, meanwhile, noted that an official OPCW report from February 2018 described Henderson as an "OPCW Inspection Team Leader" just two before his deployment to Douma.

This was also corroborated in an email, published by WikiLeaks, in which a person believed to be Henderson's colleague claimed that it was "falsehood" that "Ian did not form part of the Douma FFM team," and accused the OPCW of "discrediting" the whistleblower's work.

CONCORD- Yesterday, Attorney General William Barr addressed the dangers that sanctuary cities and sanctuary policies pose to the general public. In jurisdictions that have adopted these policies, local law enforcement officers are restrained from working with their federal law enforcement partners. The result is that federal law enforcement officers are hampered in their efforts to locate, arrest, and remove people who are in the United States illegally. This may include individuals who are actively engaged in criminal conduct.

Barr’s remarks resonate in New Hampshire, where the opioid crisis has been fueled by foreign drug cartels who exploit our citizens for the sake of making a profit. Their lethal drugs reach our state through a network of traffickers who often employ criminal aliens as dealers to sell drugs in our communities. To shield themselves from arrest, criminal aliens often reside outside of our state, sometimes living in sanctuary cities where they feel safe.

The highest obligation of the government is to protect its citizens, especially from victimization by criminals. This requires coordination on the part of law enforcement at all levels. When local communities adopt sanctuary policies, those policies can jeopardize public safety by preventing the federal government from arresting and prosecuting removable aliens. While reasonable people can debate the merits of various immigration policies, few would contest that those who commit serious criminal offenses while unlawfully inside this country should be prosecuted and then removed from the United States. When a sanctuary jurisdiction refuses to honor an immigration detainer and releases a felon onto the street, all of our citizens are endangered. These policies also endanger the brave law enforcement officers who must try to identify and arrest criminal aliens after they have been released by sanctuary cities.

Here in New Hampshire, we frequently prosecute criminals who are unlawfully in this country, including those who have taken up residency in sanctuary cities in other states. Many of these criminal aliens have distributed fentanyl, heroin and other dangerous drugs, thereby causing great suffering. It is not uncommon to encounter criminal aliens who use fraudulent documents to mask their true identity and immigration status. If these criminals are released before they can be removed from the United States, it can be challenging to locate them again. Enforcing our laws is a complicated and difficult undertaking and sanctuary policies only make it more difficult to protect our citizens.

While New Hampshire has not been in the forefront of the sanctuary movement, it is important to realize that we are negatively impacted by the adoption of these policies in other states. The reality is that criminals can shelter behind sanctuary policies to the detriment of everyone else in society. This is especially true if you are an interstate drug dealer looking for a place to hide while hooking Granite Staters on your deadly product.

Student-teacher strikes across France are met with even more heavy-handed policing

Already beleaguered by pension reform protests and the Yellow Vest movement, France is now grappling with yet more protests, this time by students and teachers fighting new reforms to the country’s baccalaureate high school exams.

In a rare display of solidarity between erstwhile enemies since time immemorial, students and teachers alike blocked-off schools and engaged in brief clashes with police as they resisted the introduction of continuous assessment (E3C (Common Continuous Control Tests)).

The Minister of Education Jean Michel Blanquer announced last week that he wanted to simplify the ‘Bac’ and, ever since then, blockades have taken place in front of exam centers across the country. Many offerings of the test have been forcibly cancelled due to a lack of sitting candidates.

Eyewitness photos and video shared online shows similar scenes across France as improvised blockades made of chairs, desks, bins and other materials appeared in front of schools and test centers.

In what is now a common sight in Macron’s France, heavy-handed police have been involved in clashes with the protesting students between the ages of 15 and 17, and multiple arrests have been made in what many have decried as intimidatory tactics by authorities.

"To intimidate high school students and ensure that these tests take place at all costs, there has been a recent explosion in the number of young people placed in police custody," a family Lawyer told French media.

The E3C, Common Continuous Control Tests, are spread across three sessions throughout the academic year; however, they take place at different times depending on the region and under different conditions. The protesters argue that this fails to guarantee equality of opportunity for students.

DOJ Gave $500,000 Grant To ‘Hookers for Jesus’ For Alleged Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts, Whistleblowers Reveal

A whistleblower complaint revealed that the Department of Justice has given over $500,000 in anti-human trafficking grants to the organization “Hookers for Jesus” instead of the recommended charities.

A DOJ memo from September, obtained by Reuters, shows that two long-established nonprofits — Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach and Chicano Por La Causa of Phoenix — were well-rated by outside contractors and were originally on the anti-human trafficking grant program list as recommended grant winners.

However, the grant money was distributed between two organizations that contractors had given lower ratings, Hookers for Jesus and the Lincoln Tubman Foundation. Hookers for Jesus was given $530,190 and Lincoln Tubman Foundation was given $549,355, in grant money over three years.

Another memo obtained by Reuters says that the funding decision was made in order to “distribute funding across as many states as possible.” In December, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees local 2830 filed a complaint asking the inspector general to investigate whether there were politics involved in deciding the two grant winners.

The Lincoln Tubman Foundation was founded by the daughter of a prominent local Republican who supported President Donald Trump as a delegate at the 2016 convention and is close to South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott. Chicanos Por La Causa has opposed the Trump Administration’s immigration policies, and the head of the Catholic Charities in Palm Beach has participated in past Democratic National Committees.

Hookers for Jesus is controversial for its strict rules in their safe house. Founded by former sex worker and sex trafficking victim Annie Lobert in 2007, the organization operates Destiny House, a one-year safehouse program for sex-trafficking victims and women trying to leave sex work.

The rules in the safehouse include banning “secular magazines with articles, pictures, etc. that portray worldly views/advice on living, sex, clothing, makeup tips,” and mandatory attendance of the organization’s Christian religious services, although Lobert denies that residents are forced to attend.

Hookers for Jesus also, according to reviewers, has little experience with males, minors, or foreign victims of human trafficking. The Lincoln Tubman Foundation, founded in 2018 by Brooke Burris, has “little to no experience” according to reviewers.

Migrant Apprehensions at Border Drop 11 Percent in January amid 8-Month Decline

The apprehension of migrants illegally crossing the border between ports of entry fell in January by more than 11 percent as an eight-month decline continues. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials believed in early January that the numbers would increase.

Border Patrol agents apprehended approximately 29,200 migrants who illegally crossed the border between ports of entry in January. This is down 11 percent from December 2019 when agents apprehended 32,858 migrants, a senior CBP official told reporters during a briefing on Monday. From the peak in May 2019 when agents apprehended 132,856 migrants, the number of apprehensions fell by nearly 80 percent.

The current apprehension rate runs at just under 950 per day. This compares to the daily apprehension rate of 4,286 per day in May 2019, according to CBP statistics.

The success of policies put in place by the Trump Administration last summer, Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras provided a regional solution to the problem of mass migration through Mexico to the U.S. border, the official stated.

During a just-ended trip to these countries, Acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan met with a wide array of government and law enforcement leaders on topics relating to border security, human trafficking, asylum agreements, reducing illegal migration, and trade opportunities.

“The long-term economic prosperity of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras is vital to addressing the flow of illegal migration to the United States,” Morgan said in a written statement. “We are actively engaged in these partnerships between nations and they are absolutely essential to strengthen our efforts in the U.S. to control our borders and uphold the rule of law. We must also continue to discourage migrants from these nations from risking the lives of their family by making the dangerous and potentially deadly journey north to the United States.”

During the Monday briefing, the CBP official stated these new policies empowered the countries of Mexico and the Central American Northern Triangle to address the mass migration in an effective regional solution.

These new policies forced transnational criminal organizations engaging in human smuggling to shift their tactics and operations.

CBP officials reported a record high of more than 20,000 Brazilian nationals made their way across the U.S. southwestern border during Fiscal Year 2019 (which ended on September 30, 2019). “This trend is continuing in FY20,” the senior CBP official stated. The number of Mexican nationals apprehended at the border is also increasing.

CBP says it is now applying a legal consequence to 95 percent of those who illegally cross the border — “all but ending the catch and release” policies of the past. Those consequences include removal to Mexico and Guatemala under the Migrant Protection Program, prosecution for illegal entry into the U.S., increased prosecution for those who re-enter after being removed, the return of Mexican migrants deep into the Mexican interior instead of just across the border, and other consequences.

As to the reports of migrant caravans forming in Honduras, the CBP official responded, “Do not put yourself or your family at risk by embarking on this dangerous journey.”

“We are encouraged by the January apprehension numbers,” the CBP official concluded. “Our efforts have been undeniably successful.”

South Dakota Republicans Shoot Down Bill Opposing Child Sex Changes, Cross-Sex Hormone Injections

The government has no role in protecting children from surgeries that permanently mutilate their genitals or injections of cross-sex hormones that can cause irreversible damage, at least according to a group of top South Dakota Republicans.

A Senate committee on Monday rejected a bill that would have prohibited medical professionals from providing hormone treatments and gender confirmation surgeries to transgender youths.

The decision by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee followed emotional testimony from both advocates and opponents of the bill. About 20 opponents who rallied against the proposed legislation prior to the hearing helped pack the hearing room where the crowd filled the floor space and spilled out into the hallway.

The vote was 5-2.

Sen. Wayne Steinhauer, R-Hartford, made the motion to defeat the bill. He called it a "gut wrenching" issue, but one that should be left with families and not the Legislature.

"I believe the building block of society is the family," Steinhauer said.

Yet he will do nothing to protect families from this madness.

Next, are these senators going to repeal the laws banning kids from smoking and using drugs?

It's not the role of government to decide what "families" do in the privacy of their own homes, right?

But Sen. Lance Russell, R-Hot Springs, argued the bill allowed families to bring an action if a young person was damaged from transgender treatment.

"I don't see this as paternalistic on the part of the government," Russell said.

Sen. Deb Soholt, R-Sioux Falls and the committee chairwoman, opposed the measure, but she said both sides shared a common thread of caring for children.

Irish election result is a victory for Nationalism

Once upon a time Gerry Adams, the leader of Ireland’s nationalist party, Sinn Fein, could not be heard speaking on the BBC. He was branded a terrorist and his voice was dubbed. How times have changed. Now his party, led by Mary Lou McDonald, has stormed to victory in the Irish elections. Having won the largest percentage of the vote at 24%, Sinn Fein has ended the decades long domination of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail in what was effectively a two-party political system.

McDonald now seeks to form a government with other left-wing Irish parties and although she doesn’t expect to form a coalition with Fine Gael or Fianna Fail, she would still participate in talks with representatives of the parties: “I also have consistently said that I will talk to and listen to everybody, I think that is what grown-ups do and that is what democracy demands.”

Fianna Fail’s leader, Michael Martin, said however that there were ‘significant incompatibilities’ to working with Sinn Fein. His party, along with Fine Gael have cited Sinn Fein’s previous links to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) – the paramilitary group – as a reason for not working with them. However Mary Lou McDonald has said it is “not sustainable” for either party leader to rule out talks with Sinn Fein. Given the sizeable chunk of the Irish population that voted for her party, you can see she has a fair point.

The Taioseach, Leo Varadkar, has now been forced to admit that Ireland has a three-party system. It may be a marginal win, and one which will force Sinn Fein into a coalition, but it is nevertheless a highly significant turn of events. Although the party won due to its left-wing domestic agenda and promises to combat poverty and rising homelessness, it cannot be ignored that this win is part of a broader, Europe-wide trend. Nationalism is on the rise across Europe, call it populism if you will, but people are increasingly voting for parties which put the nation state first over further European integration. Centrist parties are failing to compete with those offering a nationalist, eurosceptic agenda.

People don’t like to be dictated to. The arguably authoritarian decision by state broadcaster RTE not to include Mary Lou Mcdonald in their leaders’ debate quite possibly only generated more support for her party. It was reported that prior to the election Sinn Fein sent the broadcaster a legal letter asking it to reverse its decision. The Irish establishment will now have to catch up with the reality that Sinn Fein is now an equal player in the political landscape, and a force to be reckoned with.

The nationalist vibe in the air has now awoken the idea of Irish unity. A poll conducted earlier in 2019 demonstrated that two thirds of Irish people are now supportive of Irish reunification. Of 3000 people questioned, 65% said they were in favour of northern and southern Ireland becoming one nation again. Brexit, which has brought with it a surge in English nationalism, along with a Westminster government increasingly detached from the reality of the everyday struggles of working people, has encouraged more people north and south of the Irish border to rethink their stance on a topic few dared to broach in the past due to the violent conflict between nationalists and unionists. Under the Good Friday Agreement, it is indeed possible for Northern Ireland to secede the United Kingdom if a referendum result were to decide this.

Sinn Fein’s stance on the EU is not entirely clear-cut, but the win could be interpreted as a victory for Euroscepticism. The party is against further European integration, campaigned for a ‘No’ vote in the Irish referendum on joining the European Economic Community in 1972 and criticised the proposal of a European Constitution in 2002. Although it did support Britain remaining in the EU in the run-up to the 2016 EU referendum, it has criticised the European Union in the past for its policies of neoliberalism. When it comes to post-Brexit trade talks with the UK, the new Irish government with Sinn Fein at the helm is likely to take a tougher stance.

In addition, it’s likely that under Mary Lou McDonald’s leadership, we will see a referendum on Irish unity. If the outcome is for unification, it will put more pressure on a UK government currently facing a real threat from growing Scottish nationalism. As Irish and Scottish nationalist movements gain popularity, the United Kingdom cannot be taken for granted any longer. As elections continue to demonstrate, the status quo is under threat and it’s becoming increasingly possible that we will see the dissolution of the United Kingdom within our lifetimes.

RBNZ launches direct phone line and email for whistleblowers in banking

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is formalising its procedures with a phone line and dedicated email inbox for whistleblowers.

The move comes as the regulator beefs up its prudential function and as it continues with its review alongside the Financial Markets Authority on the conduct of banks and major insurers.

The work so far has found weak governance within financial institutions and regulators have been critical of the pace of change within them.

RBNZ general counsel Nick McBride said the bank typically heard from two to three whistleblowers each year, but since the conduct review began there have been more. In the past, emails had often come through the central bank's general enquiry system and so the RBNZ wanted to streamline this.

"It's been triggered by the conduct and culture review and we've been behind the times honestly, and want to remedy that," he said.

Phone calls and emails will be dealt with by the bank's compliance team. The central bank stressed it does not take complaints from customers but is looking for employees or former bank employees with information.

The move surprised the NZ Bankers' Association, which has been working on its own industry-wide scheme to provide an independent alternative to the banks' current whistleblowing services.

A spokesman said its initiative was a response to the regulators' reviews but was still in progress.

McBride said its offering was "complementary" to what the banks provide and it was natural for a regulator to have something that employees would trust.

The RBNZ encouraged employees to look at their own internal policy first. If they did not feel that was appropriate, either because they thought their employer may cover up the issue, or had not resolved the matter despite the disclosure, they should get in touch with the regulator.

"The banks' internal whistleblower schemes are actually quite good and we have had some people take issues through to their head office and we've been impressed by the extent to which complaints have been taken seriously. There's no evidence to say they are not taken seriously but we should have something external," McBride added.

The lawyer said the move was part of a wider beefing up of the central bank's enforcement and investigations function.

Victoria University of Wellington professor of public administration Michael Macaulay said it was always good to have independent avenues but whether more whistleblowers would now come forward was unknown.

"In the vast majority of cases the reason why people don't blow the whistle isn't because they are scared of the consequences, it is because they don't even realise what they are in," the whistleblowing expert said.

The Commerce Commission already has a whistleblowing tool which allows users to submit information through an anonymous mailbox.

Five Turkish soldiers slain in shelling of Afrin

Early Monday morning, five Turkish soldiers were reported killed in fighting with the Syrian military in the Syrian town of Taftanaz. The town is in rebel-dominated Idlib Province, which Syria is looking to reclaim.

As in previous confrontations, Turkey responded with massive military retaliation against Syria. Turkey reported hitting 115 targets in Syria, all government sites. The Turkish Defense Ministry added that 101 Syrian soldiers were killed.

In addition to killing the soldiers, Turkey hit a Syrian government helicopter, destroyed three tanks and two artillery pieces. They also reportedly hit some air defenses in the area.

Turkey has been eager to engage in massive military engagements to keep northern Syria from being totally reclaimed by the Syrian government, even if that means fighting to keep al-Qaeda under control of some territory.

This comes after weekend deployments by Turkey of more forces into Idlib Province, specifically because they envisioned a new military confrontation. They clearly weren’t waiting, and the confrontation was almost immediate, reflective of Turkey putting its troops into areas that are being contested.

PayPal funds academic research on illegal firearms transactions

PayPal Holdings Inc is teaming up with criminologists and experts at several universities to probe the payment systems used in the trafficking of illegal firearms in the United States, the company said on Tuesday. The research aims to help financial companies and law enforcement understand what types of payment methods are used to finance illegal transactions and prevent them from taking place, PayPal executives said.

The effort will be led by the Center on Crime and Community Resilience at Northeastern University and the University of Chicago Crime Lab.

The hope is that having a better understanding of illegal gun trafficking will help eradicate gun-related violence, said Dave Szuchman, PayPal’s head of global financial crime and customer protection.

“There haven’t been comprehensive studies done,” he said in an interview.

The San Jose, California-based company bans customers from using its services - including popular peer-to-peer payments app Venmo - to buy or sell firearms.

The research initiative comes as other large companies, including Citigroup Inc (C.N) and Walmart Inc (WMT.N), have tried to address gun safety through financing or sales following numerous mass shootings across the United States in recent years.

The research will be led by Dr. Anthony Braga, director of the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northeastern and an expert on the subject of gun violence and reducing illegal access to firearms. Braga and his team are joined by experts from the University of Chicago Crime Lab, the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis, led by Garen J. Wintemute, a professor of emergency medicine, and Philip J. Cook, a professor of public policy at Duke University and co-director of the NBER Working Group on the Economics of Crime.

Among other things, the research will examine prices paid for illegally acquired guns, how the transactions were financed and how internet sales on the surface, deep and dark web facilitate illicit sales. The research will also examine international gun trafficking organizations, Braga said.

“We hope to establish a new area of study that could have major policy implications - how illegally sourced guns are financed,” Braga said. “This is a subject where researchers and policymakers understand very little.”

Journalist Abby Martin Sues State of Georgia Over Law Requiring Pledge of Allegiance to Israel

After refusing to sign a pledge of allegiance to the state of Israel, the state of Georgia shut down a media literacy conference featuring journalist and filmmaker Abby Martin at Georgia Southern University. Martin had recently released a documentary critical of the Israeli government called Gaza Fights for Freedom. Now she is suing the state, claiming the decision is a violation of the First Amendment. Along with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF), today she filed a federal free speech lawsuit against the university system of Georgia.

Martin was dismayed by the university’s decision: “This censorship of my talk based on forced compliance to anti-BDS laws in Georgia is just one level of a nationwide campaign to protect Israel from grassroots pressure. We must stand firmly opposed to these efforts and not cower in fear to these blatant violations of free speech,” she said.

Twenty-eight states have already mandated loyalty pledges to Israel as a means to outlaw dissent. But in December, President Trump passed legislation effectively criminalizing the Boycott Divestments and Sanctions (BDS) movement that aims to put pressure on the Jewish state through economic action, along the lines of the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa. The law mandates that any public institution would be subject to losing all funding if the government deems that they are not doing enough to stamp out anti-Semitism, which, it explicitly states, includes any criticism of the Israeli government. In December, MintPress reported that the British government under Boris Johnson is planning to introduce similar legislation.

“The hyperbolic notion that conservatives are the ones being persecuted on college campuses has made blatant censorship campaigns against people for criticism of Israel, or other progressive protests, go completely ignored,” Martin wrote.

CAIR’s Legal Defense Fund Senior Litigation Attorney Gadeir Abbas said,

There is no place where free speech is more important than on campus. And this attempt to suppress Abby’s views ­– denying students, academics, and others from hearing her lecture – is as brazen as it is illegal. In adopting this anti-BDS law, Georgia has prioritized the policy preferences of a foreign country over the free speech rights of Americans, like Abby, who speak on this state’s college campuses.”

Joe Biden took his ball and went home.

The former vice president on Tuesday suddenly announced that he was bailing from New Hampshire, where polls show him running in fourth or even fifth place. Biden said he will leave right away and not spend primary night in the state. Instead, he’s heading to South Carolina to “headline a newly scheduled kick-off rally in the state he’s long considered his campaign firewall,” Fox News reports.

“We’re going to head to South Carolina tonight,” Biden told reporters. “And I’m going to Nevada… we’ve got to look at them all.”

After his dismal finish in Iowa, where he finished fourth, things in New Hampshire looks just as bad, if not worse. The day before the Granite State’s primary, Biden was running fourth in most polls (and fifth in a couple). He knows he’s not in good shape, saying at the last Democratic debate in Manchester, N.H.: “I took a hit in Iowa and I’ll probably take a hit here.”

That may well be a dramatic understatement. Most of the latest polls were taken days ago, when a quarter of the state’s voters claimed to be undecided. Many have since made up their minds, and they aren’t breaking Biden’s way. That’s the real reason he’s bailing.

“The campaign confirmed Biden is now canceling his originally scheduled appearance at a primary night party in Nashua, N.H., and will be in South Carolina instead. The New Hampshire party will go on as scheduled without him,” Fox reports.

Aaron Rich, the brother of Seth Rich is suing Matt Couch for his reporting on Seth who was murdered in the summer of 2016. Seth worked for the DNC at the time.

Judge Richard J. Leon, is a longtime colleague and Georgetown Law School co-lecturer with John Podesta. He is also linked to Fusion GPS.

Matt Couch is probably going to file a motion to recuse Leon.

Two Ex-Spanish Prime Ministers Summoned to Testify in Gurtel Corruption Case

Former Spanish prime ministers Mariano Rajoy and Jose Maria Aznar will testify before the National Court in a trial on alleged financial misconduct within their right-leaning party Partido Popular (People's Party, PP), the Spanish state television said on Tuesday.

According to the TVE broadcaster, they will be asked whether they knew or not about the existence of a "b-box," or an unofficial party fund that was topped up through illegal means, an allegation put forward against the entire party leadership by former treasurer Jose Luis Barcenas, now jailed for 33 years within the same case.

The large-scale scandal involving the PP's illicit funds has been ongoing for several years now and is known in Spain as the Gurtel case. It alleges businessman Francisco Correa Sanchez in using the party and its members for money laundering and tax evasion at the cost of bribes and kickbacks.

The upcoming trial is specifically about 900,000 euros ($980,000) that the party spent for its Madrid headquarters' renovation in 2007-2008 – the prosecution believes the money came from the unaccounted shadow fund.

Aside from Rajoy and Aznar, witnesses will include all former People's Party general secretaries, several ministers and the former senate head, as well as the construction companies OHL, Sacyr и FCC that were hired for repairs in Madrid.

This will be Rajoy's second time to testify within the Gurtel case. In 2018, it cost him a vote of no confidence and subsequent ouster as prime minister.

The app designed by Shadow, Inc. to report results in the upcoming Nevada Caucus experienced technical malfunctions in testing even before the company’s Iowa app caused severe delays in reporting that state’s results, Vice’s Motherboard reported on Friday.

Nevada Democratic Party volunteers had been testing the app since early January and up to this week. When volunteers attempted to submit results for the first alignment, the app presented an “error” message.

“Because the deadline for the Nevada app was later, Shadow’s Nevada app was still in beta testing, and that testing identified some errors that were being fixed,” a company spokesperson told Motherboard. The spokesperson said the app had been on track for a “successful rollout.”

Nevada will hold its caucus on February 22. After the results of the Iowa Caucus were delayed by systemic technical malfunctions with the Democratic Party’s reporting app, Nevada Democrats announced they would not use the app built for them by Shadow.

Martha Bashford, sex crimes chief who didn’t prosecute Harvey Weinstein, resigns

The chief of the sex crimes unit at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office resigned on Friday — amid Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial, The Post has learned.

Martha Bashford put in her retirement papers after four decades with the office, DA Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office has confirmed.

“…40 years is a long time to stay in one place, and it is time for me to give notice that I will be moving on,” she wrote in a letter to Vance dated Feb. 7 and obtained by The Post. “Please tell whomever you choose to be the next Chief that they are getting by far the best position this Office has to offer — in my humble opinion.”

The sex crimes unit did not oversee the prosecution of Weinstein after Vance replaced veteran sex crimes prosecutor Maxine Rosenthal in 2018 with Assistant DA Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, who is not part of the unit.

Rosenthal came under fire after she allegedly referred to one of his accusers, who was later excised from the case over credibility issues, as one of “Harvey’s girls,” sources said.

On Bashford’s recommendation, Vance made the controversial call not to prosecute Weinstein in 2015 for allegedly groping Italian model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez even though the disgraced film mogul was captured on an NYPD audio recording apologizing for his conduct.

Oh, and what else is interesting here, is the curious email about Seth Rich. Now Seth Rich was a DNC staffer, who was murdered here in Washington DC and the murder remains unsolved. Now there are those who question how and why he was murdered and what happened there and you can just imagine, there are people who allege he was involved in the Wikileaks leaks or the DNC hacking. I don't know if any of that's true, I do know that when a political person like Seth Rich is murdered, politics intervenes in the investigation in his death.

So we've tried to find some, do some FOIA work there, we haven't gotten anywhere, because the death investigation is still open. But the FBI, I think it told us it had no documents. Well, lo and behold out of this Peters Pa, uh uh Lisa Page, Peter Stzrok document, there's references to Seth Rich. Let's see what it says here, there is a uh, FB, there's a media inquiry about um, so an official who's name they redact, writes, various news outlets are reporting today that Julian Assange suggested during a recent overseas interview, that DNC staffer Seth Rich was the Wikileaks source and may have been killed because he leaked the DNC emails to his organization and that Wikileaks is offering $20,000 dollars for information regarding Seth Rich's death last month. Based on this news, we anticipate additional press coverage on this matter. I hear that you are in class today, however when you have a moment can you please give me a call to discuss what involvement the bureau has in the investigation. An, a Washington field office responds, I'm aware of this reporting from earlier this week, but not any specific involvement in any related case.

I don't know what any of that means, I, I'm reading it to mean we're not involved, but it reads oddly. Um, so if I'd received that email, I'd would've written back, what do you mean? Is it yes or no? An unidentified agent then writes to uh both um, Moffa who's an FBI guy and um uh, Stzrok, just FYSA (for your situational awareness) I squashed this with redacted. So there's a blank. Stzrok then forwards that email chain to Page. So that's curious. You know it looks like they squashed it maybe, uh with a uh media outlet, I don't know. But they're talking about Rich here, they suggest the FBI isn't doing much of anything on it, but they squashed uh, an inquiry, which is a substantial issue.

I mean Assange, you know, I don't know whether he was telling the truth there, but you know certainly that would be enough if, you know, it would've been enough for the FBI to investigate Donald Trump. But not enough for the FBI to launch an investigation into the Seth Rich murder. That's what that shows. Isn't it curious, what they decide to investigate and what basis they base that decision on. Trump they got garbage, rumors, they start spying on him, and other innocent Americans, targeting Manafort, targeting General Flynn, here you've got someone publicly suggesting that Rich was murdered for, somehow being involved in the DNC leaks, and the FBI, their response is how do we quash that. Meaning, we're not doing anything. And that's the most charitable reading of this, so that's interesting.

California lawyer busted by feds for selling illegal guns, meth

A California lawyer was busted by ATF agents for allegedly selling a number of unlicensed guns and methamphetamine, authorities said Monday.

The suspect, Melinda Romines of Anaheim, acted as a middle man for black-market arms dealers, buying the weapons then re-selling them to customers, the ATF said in a statement.

In one of the deals, she allegedly sold a .40-caliber pistol, an AR-style rifle and a silencer to a buyer in a Los Angeles parking lot in 2018, the agency said. Both of the guns had their serial numbers scratched off, according to the statement.

In another parking lot a few months later, she allegedly sold another illegal .45-caliber pistol in a deal that made her $900.

A month later, she and an accomplice sold close to a quarter-pound of methamphetamine in two drug deals, the ATF said.

She was indicted on one count of conspiracy to engage in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, one count of possession of an unregistered firearm, and two counts of distributing methamphetamine, authorities said.

Romines could not immediately be reached for comment early Tuesday.

Please open your heart to help a child never have to be put before her abused again. This is definitely something no one wants To talk about however this happens to 2 out of 4 girls. And this time my daughter is the victim of her own FATHER

and to make matters worse the Judge seems to be pro dad. He uttered the words “I’m sorry you are missing out on your parenting time with your daughter”

I couldn’t believe my ears. Thinking that the justice would be on the side of a child but apparently a man who has molested his own offspring has rights to them. Unless I can show up with a defense team to protect my child. I’m desperate to get the help to protect her from him ever hurting her again. We now find ourselves in this situation.

We ar in the midst of one of the most challenging situation no parent should ever face. I am taking my daughters father to court in pursuit of full custody with no visitation .

This decision does not come easily. March 6th my daughter came forward about her father abusing her. This last month has been hell for her. Its been hell for me to even take in that the father of my child is a monster. All I know as a mother who loves my daughter dearly my daughter is no longer safe in her fathers care. She expressed she never wants to see her father again. She is afraid for her life at this point because she spoke out and knows her father will be angry.

Come to find out hes been molesting her for some time now. The first time it happened she ran to tell her grandmother ( bios dads mother) Grandmother immediately called my daughters father to the room to let him know what my daughter just expressed to her. He of course yelled at my daughter and scared her to death. My daughter trusted an adult to protect her and that person failed to do so. Neither adult ever came to me to let me know about that incident. Years later here we are. My brave daughter finally came to me for help.

I started my daughter with an amazing therapist who specializes with sexual abuse victims. These visits have become quite costly for my family and I. We also received horrific news today in court that my daughters predator (Father) wants monitored visits with her. My daughter doesn't ever want to be in his presence. She is afraid he will hurt again. I was able to meet with an attorney today who made me feel we have a chance to help this case and save my child. Our next court hearing is May 3rd. We are at our final hours of being able to retain the attorney to appear on our court date.

We need help with the attorney / therapy fees.

Prayers for my daughter would be much appreciated.

Trump suggests military should consider additional discipline for Vindman

President Trump on Tuesday suggested the military should consider additional disciplinary action against Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who provided damaging testimony against Trump in the impeachment inquiry and was reassigned from his White House job last week.

"We sent him on his way to a much different location, and the military can handle him any way they want," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. "Gen. Milley has him now. I congratulate Gen. Milley. He can have him."

Gen. Mark Milley is the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Asked specifically if the Pentagon should pursue further action against Vindman, Trump said it would be "up to the military."

"But if you look at what happened, they’re going to certainly, I would imagine, take a look at that," he said.

The president's comments on Tuesday signaled he was open to additional punishment for officials who testified against him in the impeachment inquiry. Some of his allies have sought to cast the ouster of witnesses like Vindman as justifiable reassignments rather than retribution.

Trump added that there were more departures to come, but it was unclear if he was referring specifically to impeachment witnesses.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday signaled there would be no punishment for Vindman, saying the Pentagon protects service members from retribution.

“We protect all of our persons, service members, from retribution or anything like that. We’ve already addressed that in policy and other means,” Esper told reporters at the Pentagon during a press conference with his Colombian counterpart.

Vindman had been working temporarily at the White House as a member of the national security council when he was dismissed. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland was fired later the same day.

Both officials were among those who testified about Trump's conduct toward Ukraine during House impeachment inquiry hearings last year. The House ultimately impeached Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, alleging he withheld security aid from Ukraine to pressure the country to investigate his political rivals.

The Senate acquitted Trump last week in a party-line vote.

Vindman proved to be one of Democrats' most memorable witnesses. A Purple Heart recipient, Vindman testified that he believed Trump's conduct on a July 25 call with the Ukrainian president was inappropriate and that he reported it to his superior.

Trump has mocked Vindman for wearing his military uniform during the hearing and complained about the contents of his testimony.

On Tuesday, the president accused Vindman of leaking and going outside the chain of command.

"I obviously wasn't happy with the job he did," Trump said. "What was said on the call was totally appropriate. I call it a perfect call, I always will call it a perfect call."

President Trump is withdrawing his nomination for former U.S. attorney for D.C. Jessie Liu to serve as the Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial crimes, a top position overseeing economic sanctions, according to two sources with direct knowledge.

The big picture: Liu was confirmed in September 2017 to lead the largest U.S. attorney's office in the country, overseeing a number of politically charged investigations that included the case against Trump associates Roger Stone, Paul Manafort and other spinoffs from the Mueller investigation.

Liu stepped down from the U.S. attorney's office after Trump announced his intention to nominate her to the Treasury position in December 2019.

She was replaced by Timothy Shea, who is currently serving on an interim basis.

President Trump Pulls Nomination of Corrupt Deep State US Attorney Jessie Liu to Treasury Dept.

Good News!

President Trump pulled his nomination on Tuesday of crooked Deep State US Attorney Jessie Liu to the Treasury Department.

TGP contributor Joe Hoft wrote about this political hack back in September 2019–

Jessie K. Liu should not be practicing law. She should be disbarred, impeached and indicted. She is the US Attorney involved in three Deep State Mueller related cases where the government is withholding or withheld evidence from the defense. And she is involved in other corrupt cases.

Jessie K. Liu was an up and coming star in the Department of Justice. However her actions of late prove that she never should have been elevated to her position in the first place.

Ms. Liu is involved in three cases where pertinent documents were withheld from the defense –

Liu was involved in the Maria Butina case where a young woman sat in prison, due to the fact that she was set up by the Deep State FBI. The information related to the FBI’s set up was never provided to her or her attorneys in spite of numerous requests from the defense for this information which was the government’s duty to provide to her.

Liu also is involved in the Concord Management case. This case has been a mess since day one. The government alleged numerous lies about the company in order to tie the Mueller sham to Russia. Mueller’s team stated Concord and its sister company Concord Catering were involved in spreading news on Facebook that impacted the US election. The problem is Concord Catering wasn’t even in existence at the time they were indicted by Mueller and the Mueller team was never able to tie Russians to Concord Mangement which spent only $3,000 on Facebook ads that supposedly impacted the 2016 election.

Mueller insinuated that Concord was led by Russians who didn’t want Hillary to win. But Mueller and Liu have never been able to prove this while making up crimes along the way. Concord Management’s attorneys are toying with the corrupt Deep State, even saying their logic is similar to Tweety bird saying, “I did, I did, I taw a puddy tat.”

In addition, Liu is involved in the Deep State’s sham indictment of the courageous General Mike Flynn. Since the 2016 election and before, General Flynn was targeted by Obama’s Deep State. Flynn committed the crime of disagreeing with Obama’s insane policies in the Middle East. Since that time, Flynn was a target.

Today Flynn’s case is still ongoing and it is costing Flynn a mint. This past week his attorney requested documents from the government pertinent to his case. The Deep State government won’t provide the documents nor will they provide Flynn’s attorney the classified status to see them. Ms. Liu is involved in this case as well.

Ms. Liu also was involved in the James Wolfe case where he was indicted for leaking a FISA application to the New York Times –

US May Sign Trade Deal With India This Month - Trump

The US has refused to exempt India from steel and aluminum tariffs. In June 2019, President Donald Trump removed trade privileges for New Delhi under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), affecting over $5 bln worth of Indian duty-free products. India has retaliated by slapping tariffs on 28 US goods.

Trump said he may sign a trade agreement with India during his upcoming visit to the country at the end of this month.

"We might do something, we'll see, if we can make the right deal, we'll do it", Trump told reporters on Tuesday in the Oval Office.

Trump will visit New Delhi and Ahmedabad on 24-25 February to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The White House said that Trump and Modi conducted a telephone conversation over the weekend and agreed the US president’s visit would further enhance the strategic partnership between the United States and India.

While the US and India reportedly have bilateral trade to the tune of more than $140 billion, the Stratfor geopolitical intelligence consultancy has said disputes over trade, immigration and technology have strained the relationship, prompting the need for a trade deal.

Washington has also cracked down on the issuance of H-1B visas in the tech sector, hitting domestic giants such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon, as well as Indian consulting firms like Tata, Wipro and Infosys that have substantial operations in the United States, providing IT professionals from India.

Under the Trump administration, the US has been actively entering into tariff wars with other countries of the world. China is currently the main adversary, but Washington has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the terms of trade with EU countries.
