US, UK, France Requested UNSC Meeting on Situation in Northwestern Syria

The situation in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib has escalated recently after Turkey said its servicemen were killed in an attack by Syrian government forces and vowed to retaliate. The Syrian Army said it was ready to repel any Turkish aggression in the region.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and France have requested a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in northwestern Syria, a source in the UNSC said. The meeting will probably be held on Thursday, the source added.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the parties involved to stop military actions in Syria's northwest.

On 3 February, the Turkish Defence Ministry said that six Turkish servicemen had been killed in an attack by the Syrian Army in Idlib, pledging to take retaliatory action.

Syrian government forces have intensified military efforts in Idlib recently in a bid to recapture control in a region that has been a home for militants since 2012. The last portion of it is controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly known as Al-Nusra Front), the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda.

The Syrian Arab Army and Allies are Fighting the “Real War on Terror”

Probably the most hideous propaganda to be spewed by the establishment media cartel in the West is that which portrays the Syrian Arab Army as some kind of militia, “Assad’s gang”, disconnecting these defenders of homeland from the people they are fighting for and dying for every day.

I travelled to Aleppo by Pullman bus a few days ago, it was full of young soldiers heading to the frontlines in West Aleppo and Idlib. Young men from all areas of Syria, all communities, united in the common cause – to liberate their country from the infestation of extremism and sectarian terrorism, to bring peace back to a country that everyone in Syria describes as “the safest place in the Middle East before 2011”.

Most of them slept, curled up in their seats, exhausted.. others hopped off the bus when we stopped, to have a coffee or a cigarette. All of them polite, friendly and tired.

I was in Layramoun, an industrial area to the north of Aleppo two days ago as the SAA soldiers prepared for the military campaign to liberate the areas surrounding the factories that are occupied by the West’s “moderates” – Al Qaeda in Syria – it was freezing cold, a biting wind cutting to the bone, not one of the soldiers had really warm clothing or boots. They arrived one by one, their faces full of purpose, their weapons slung over their shoulder, greeting each other with grim camaraderie before the battle begins. Tanks nestling inside open garages, hidden from view, artillery trucks carrying missile launchers parked on the roadside, groups of soliders discussing plans… there was a feeling of calm before the storm.

These soldiers do not have the equipment or food that the terrorist groups have. Turkey ensures that their proxies have everything they need, including US manufactured TOW missiles (anti-tank). The SAA soldiers often do not have food for weeks/months, they survive literally on what they can forage except when local people risk their own lives to bring them sandwiches & tea. The illegal US/EU sanctions are a major part of the war waged against these soldiers who defy all this hardship until victory is the sweetest taste in their mouths.

Their weapons are old and battered compared to the sophisticated equipment supplied to groups like ISIS- BUT these young men are winning their battles, because they believe in their cause, they know they must win or die and that if they do not win, their people will die at the hands of these monsters camped on their land.

To reduce these heroes, these brave Resistance fighters to some kind of homogenous brigade of government militia is a crime in itself. Every young man (and woman) has dreams, hopes and ambitions that they put on hold to fight a war that has shattered their dreams.

When we see videos of terrorist missiles scything through these young people to cries of “Allah Akhbar”, more lives are lost, more blood is shed and more hopes are destroyed. Every single soldier is an individual fighting side by side with thousands other individuals to defeat the enemy that would see them divided. They do not fight for one man, they fight for us all.

'A very destructive speech': Democrats outraged at Trump's State of Union victory lap

House and Senate Democrats, fresh off an attempt to remove President Trump from office, rejected his triumphal State of the Union address as one of the worst speeches they have ever heard. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up her copy after Trump finished delivering it. Some Democrats stood up and chanted in protest during the speech, while others said as they left the chamber afterward, they never should have shown up in the first place. A handful walked out while Trump was still speaking.

“A very destructive speech,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly, a Virginia Democrat, who did not leave early. “He did nothing to reach out to heal wounds he helped create. He did nothing to bridge the divide in the country," Connolly told the Washington Examiner. "In fact, he doubled down.”

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, told the Washington Examiner he wished he had not attended the speech, which focused on the nation’s economic gains during his presidency, his plans to try to pass a bipartisan prescription drug bill, and add more security to the southern border, among other topics. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a Texas Democrat, said there was nothing in the 78-minute address that appealed to him. “I was hoping he would step aside," Doggett told the Washington Examiner. Democrats sat mostly stone-faced, rarely rising to applaud a line in the speech. Pelosi, seated behind Trump, maintained a grim expression.

The address provided Trump with a kind of victory lap Democrats were not anticipating. Trump’s speech was scheduled before the start of his impeachment trial, and it was uncertain whether it would conclude before the trial. The Senate is scheduled to vote on impeachment articles Wednesday. But by Tuesday night, however, Trump’s acquittal was certain, and new Gallup poll numbers showed his rising approval with voters, particularly on the economy.

House Democrats passed two articles of impeachment charging Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. But the failed impeachment effort didn’t even come up in Trump’s speech, which Republicans called “optimistic” and “a home run.” Democrats, who are eager to defeat Trump in November, had little to smile about, even in instances when Trump mentioned successes ⁠— such as wage growth, job growth, and record low unemployment for minorities ⁠— that were not partisan in nature.

Republicans said Democrats are still wrapped up in impeachment, which has dominated their agenda for weeks. “They thought they had wounded this president,” Rep. Steve Chabot, an Ohio Republican, told the Washington Examiner. “But if anything, I think he’s stronger than ever. And I think the country is stronger than ever, and that’s important.”

Pelosi and Trump have not spoken in months. She rarely smiled or clapped at his remarks and kept her eyes focused on the speech she eventually ripped in half. She shook her head when Trump said he was working with Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, on a bipartisan bill to lower prescription drug prices. The House passed its own bill, with no Republican support, in January. Democrats said after the speech that Trump ignored all the House-passed bills that he could have signed into law, including the prescription drug measure. “I don’t think Trump has any intention of doing any of it,” Rep. Val Demings, a Florida Democrat and one of seven impeachment managers who prosecuted Trump in the Senate. “There is legislation that is just sitting there.”

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a New Jersey Republican who switched parties after voting against impeaching Trump in the House last year, praised Trump’s speech. Van Drew said it was “unfortunate” Democrats had chanted objections to Trump’s speech in the chamber. “There were many, many things in that speech that both parties should agree with,” Van Drew said. But he acknowledged the major partisan divide. “I hope we can bridge it after the impeachment is done this week,” Van Drew told the Washington Examiner. “But I don’t know if that will happen. I pray for it to happen. It may take the election for the American people to speak. This election is going to determine where and how this nation is going to continue its future.”

The House in December voted to impeach Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress following an inquiry into his alleged dealings with Ukraine. The Senate impeachment trial began last month and is expected to end in an acquittal on Wednesday. The likely acquittal will come after Republicans blocked a motion to allow additional witnesses and documents in the trial.

Trump and his GOP allies have repeatedly dismissed charges that Trump's conduct represented malfeasance, instead contending that the impeachment was an effort to reverse the results of the 2016 election.

Pascrell said earlier Tuesday that Republican members of Congress would "validate virtually any criminal act [Trump] commits."

Rush Limbaugh awarded Medal of Freedom at State of the Union

Breaking with State of the Union tradition, President Trump on Tuesday paused his annual address to Congress to recognize conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh in the gallery and allow first lady Melania Trump to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The president praised Limbaugh, 69, who this week announced he is battling stage 4 lung cancer.

“Here tonight is a special man, someone beloved by millions of Americans, who just received a stage 4 advanced cancer diagnosis. This is not good news, but what is good news is that he is the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet,” President Trump said.

“Rush Limbaugh, thank you for your decades of tireless devotion to our country. Rush, in recognition of all that you have done for our nation, the millions of people a day that you speak to and inspire, and all of the incredible work that you have done for charity, I am proud to announce tonight that you will be receiving our country's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” he added.

The president then asked the first lady to present the decoration as Limbaugh appeared genuinely surprised.

The move was met with a standing ovation and cheers from Republicans as Democrats remained seated.

Limbaugh looked stunned for a moment and then stood up and appeared to wipe tears from his eyes, clasping his hands in front of his face.

Someone on the House floor shouted, “Thank you, Rush,” as the first lady fastened the medal’s blue ribbon around his neck.

Rush then shook Melania Trump's hand during a sustained standing ovation and pounded the left side of his chest as he looked down at President Trump, who flashed a thumbs-up and nodded from the dais.

“As we pray for all who are sick, we know that America is constantly achieving new medical breakthroughs,” the president said.

Decorating a prominent citizen with the Medal of Freedom in the middle of a joint address to Congress was an unusual move and indicated that President Trump’s speech was geared largely to energizing his Republican base ahead of November’s elections.

You’ll see lots of reviews today of the State of the Union speech that President Trump gave Tuesday night, and if you’re reading this, it’s more than likely you watched it yourself. You don’t need any help forming opinions of what Trump said and the show the president put on.

This column could go on for hours dissecting the speech. But instead, and particularly in light of the absolute debacle the Democrats put on in Iowa — where, as Don Surber noted, they did everything they could to fix a vote and utterly failed — what might be more important to review for posterity is just how poorly Trump’s opponents acquitted themselves on a night Trump kicked his political momentum into overdrive.

Here are the five most cogent examples of just how low that party has sunk, on full display at our nation’s highest-profile annual event.

5. American greatness? Nah.

One of the most rousing, and one would think nonpartisan, bits of the speech was when Trump, toward the finish line, offered an inspirational message of love for the American people that just about anybody could agree with:

This is the place where the pilgrims landed at Plymouth and where Texas patriots made their last stand at the Alamo.

The American nation was carved out of the vast frontier by the toughest, strongest, fiercest, and most determined men and women ever to walk the face of the Earth. Our ancestors braved the unknown; tamed the wilderness; settled the Wild West; lifted millions from poverty, disease, and hunger; vanquished tyranny and fascism; ushered the world to new heights of science and medicine; laid down the railroads, dug out canals, raised up the skyscrapers — and, ladies and gentlemen, our ancestors built the most exceptional Republic ever to exist in all of human history. And we are making it greater than ever before.

You’d think anybody in the audience for that would, regardless of what they thought of the man speaking those words, be able to applaud them.

And you’d think wrong. While half the hall offered loud cheers, the other half mostly sat still, perhaps in honor of their electoral chances this fall.

The energy level on the part of the Democrats didn’t rise until after Trump was finished, and only because Nancy Pelosi, who displayed an impressive variety of bizarre and peculiar facial expressions throughout, broke the monotony by standing up and dramatically ripping up her copy of the speech’s transcript.

Afterwards, asked about her idiotic stunt, Pelosi said she was “courteous” in doing it because it was a “dirty” speech.

“Dirty”? As the NRCC pointed out in a tweet, the speech was an awful lot cleaner than the dung-dotted streets of her district back home in San Francisco.

The speech she ripped up included a salute to the Venezuelan opposition leader, a tribute to the last surviving Tuskegee airman, a military reunion in the gallery, a young underprivileged student earning a scholarship to her dream school, and other celebrations of American achievement, and she calls it “dirty.”

More than half a dozen Democrats didn’t bother showing up. One, New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell, stood up and left during the speech. Feel free to insert the lights-and-cockroaches or sunrise-and-vampires reference if you like. It’s long been said that Democrats only like what they think they could make of America and not America itself; well, they proved it at the State of the Union.

Steyer and Pelosi Poured Money into Firm Behind Botched Iowa App

Acronym, the dark-money group behind the mobile app that derailed the news cycle by causing widespread delays in the Iowa caucus results, received funding from the political operations of Tom Steyer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, financial records reveal. Acronym acquired Shadow Inc., the tech firm that developed the app used to tabulate results in the Iowa caucus, in early 2019. According to public records and tax forms reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon, both Acronym's nonprofit arm and its affiliated political action committee have been the beneficiaries of huge volumes of liberal dark money. Among Acronym's close relationships, the filings show, are powerful politicians and wealthy donors who frequently come under fire from the Democratic Party's left-wing. Those tight connections with the Democratic establishment could lead to more questions amid the post-Iowa furor and may provoke further outrage from supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.).

Acronym's nonprofit arm—which does not disclose its funders—received $300,000 in donations in 2018 from the House Majority PAC, a Pelosi-affiliated committee that works to elect Democrats to the House of Representatives. That same year, Federal Election Commission records show, Steyer's NextGen Climate Action Committee made a $45,000 donation to the nonprofit and paid another $90,000 for its data consulting services. The group's tax documents, which were provided to the Free Beacon last September and are not yet publicly available, show that the nonprofit raised more than $1.2 million from 12 anonymous donors during its first year in operation in 2017. A representative from the group said at the time that its 2018 tax forms would be filed to the IRS in March 2020.

Acronym's PAC, Pacronym, was also a major beneficiary of wealthy Democrats' funding. The committee received six-figure contributions from director Steven Spielberg, former actress Kate Capshaw, and liberal billionaire George Soros's Democracy PAC in late 2019. The forms obtained by the Free Beacon also indicate that Acronym is affiliated with digital media company Lockwood Strategy Inc., with the two sharing a Washington, D.C., address. Both groups are led by Tara McGowan, who previously worked for Priorities USA', Steyer's NextGen PAC, and President Obama's reelection campaign. Lockwood Strategy received $145,000 for consulting services in 2018 from the Win Justice PAC, which was first bankrolled with a $3 million check from liberal billionaire George Soros as part of a campaign to target infrequent voters in swing states.

Acronym, House Majority PAC, and NextGen did not immediately respond to requests for comment on their relationship or funding. Acronym was created following the Democrats' historic defeat in the 2016 elections and was meant as a digital outfit to rival the Trump campaign's own online operation, which one Facebook executive called "the single best digital ad campaign he's ever seen." In 2018, it pulled in $18 million, registered 60,000 voters, and produced more than 10,000 Facebook ads. Acronym poured large sums into Virginia's 2019 elections and helped bankroll a news site in the state that drew scrutiny for pushing a pro-Democratic message while billing itself as unaffiliated news. Shadow, the tech firm Acronym acquired, developed a mobile app that the Iowa Democratic Party expected to use to report results in Monday evening's caucus. But as results began to pour in from across the Hawkeye state, the software malfunctioned, leading to severe delays in tabulating the results and driving up tempers among Democratic activists. By Tuesday morning, hours after the Republican party had called its own caucus, there was still no clear victor in sight.

Following the tumult of Monday evening, Acronym now finds itself at the center of the Iowa firestorm. Recent reports indicated that Democratic officials in the state were warned about significant issues with the app in the days leading up to the caucuses. Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf said Tuesday morning that the department's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency had previously offered to test the app but was rebuffed.

4. Sit your abortion!

There was a moment of political brilliance in the speech when Trump captured the center on the abortion issue for the pro-life movement:

Whether we are Republican, Democrat, or Independent, surely we must all agree that every human life is a sacred gift from God!

Surely we must all agree … except apparently we don’t. Half the hall sat on its hands.

Trump didn’t ask for a visiting-privileges bill. He didn’t ask for a fetal heartbeat bill. He asked for a late-term abortion ban, something science has shown is clearly the termination of a viable human being.

There is a significant majority of Americans who object to abortion up until birth. The Democrats won’t hear of it, so in thrall they are to the criminal radicalism of Planned Parenthood.

3. The pro-poverty party.

Trump spent a big chunk of the first half of the speech spouting one powerful metric of American success after another, and particularly among members of demographic groups who typically vote Democrat:

The unemployment rate is the lowest in over half a century.

Incredibly, the average unemployment rate under my administration is lower than any administration in the history of our country. If we had not reversed the failed economic policies of the previous administration, the world would not now be witness to America’s great economic success.

The unemployment rates for African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and Asian-Americans have reached the lowest levels in history. African-American youth unemployment has reached an all-time low.

African-American poverty has declined to the lowest rate ever recorded.

The unemployment rate for women reached the lowest level in almost 70 years — and last year, women filled 72 percent of all new jobs added.

The veterans’ unemployment rate dropped to a record low.

The unemployment rate for disabled Americans has reached an all-time low.

Workers without a high school diploma have achieved the lowest unemployment rate recorded in United States history.

A record number of young Americans are now employed.

Under the last administration, more than 10 million people were added to the food stamp rolls. Under my administration, seven million Americans have come off of food stamps and 10 million people have been lifted off of welfare.

Not only did these people sit on their hands, they actually audibly hissed and heckled at Trump when he talked about getting those people off food stamps.

Those are, generally speaking, your voters, Democrats! If you can’t cheer their success, how are you possibly going to demand they support you?

Any Democrat political consultant who saw that should be tripling his rates for any of the swing-district representatives in that room, because his job just got infinitely harder.

2. Stone faces for school choice.

Among many moving moments in the speech was when Trump addressed a black Pennsylvania fourth grader who heretofore has been trapped in a failing school:

The next step forward in building an inclusive society is making sure that every young American gets a great education and the opportunity to achieve the American Dream. Yet, for too long, countless American children have been trapped in failing government schools. To rescue these students, 18 states have created school choice in the form of Opportunity Scholarships. The programs are so popular that tens of thousands of students remain on waiting lists. One of those students is Janiyah Davis, a fourth grader from Philadelphia. Janiyah’s mom, Stephanie, is a single parent. She would do anything to give her daughter a better future. But last year, that future was put further out of reach when Pennsylvania’s governor vetoed legislation to expand school choice for 50,000 children.

Janiyah and Stephanie are in the gallery this evening. But there is more to their story. Janiyah, I am pleased to inform you that your long wait is over. I can proudly announce tonight that an Opportunity Scholarship has become available, it is going to you, and you will soon be heading to the school of your choice.

Now, I call on the Congress to give one million American children the same opportunity Janiyah has just received. Pass the Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act — because no parent should be forced to send their child to a failing government school.

It was an embarrassing lack of compassion and insight. A poor kid gets a scholarship to a better school, and you’re so captive to communist teacher’s unions, which give more money to Bernie Sanders, the interloper you’re trying to fix elections to avoid nominating, that you can’t even give token applause to her success?

Wow.

But the worst was what happened at the podium, and it had already happened before Frau Fixodent made her war on presidential paper …

1. Pelosi couldn’t even give fake applause to a guy dying of lung cancer.

It may or may not have been the most moving segment of the speech, but when Rush Limbaugh was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the gallery of the hall, if nothing else it was time for tacit applause. Certainly not griping and grumbling, as an appalling number of the Democrats could be heard to do.

Hell, you applaud if you’re a Democrat solely in the recognition that if Limbaugh was getting that medal Tuesday night, it was a good indication that the stage four lung cancer he announced he’s saddled with gives him so little time left that he won’t be around to torment you anymore. Limbaugh might not even be around long enough to schedule an award ceremony in the future.

This is a man who has been involved in the political game for four decades. Anyone devoting that much passion and energy in the field is deserving of respect for his presence alone. We were supposed to mourn for Ted Kennedy and Elijah Cummings, for crying out loud.

But Nancy Pelosi and more or less every single Democrat in that building sat lifeless as a man who almost assuredly is living his final days was recognized for a lifetime of work.

It was such a breathtaking moment of bad faith and pure, visceral hatred as to call into question their very humanity.

Tuesday night was the worst night of Pelosi’s political career, and it was 100 percent self-inflicted. We should all remember her behavior when she’s unceremoniously dumped out of the speaker’s chair in November’s elections, and we should show her the same degree of respect and compassion she and her fellow goons, in white and other colors, showed to the president, babes and schoolgirls, veterans young and old, and cancer patients of distinction on Tuesday night.

Democratic Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema applauded a key provision of President Donald Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, while the rest of her party sat silently.

Trump praised opportunity zones Tuesday night during the State of The Union address, crediting Republican Sen. Tim Scott for inserting the provision into the landmark 2017 legislation.

“Consumer confidence has just reached amazing new highs,” Trump said. “All of those millions of people with 401ks and pensions are doing far better than they have ever done before with increases of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100% and even more.”

“Jobs and investments are pouring into 9,000 previously neglected neighborhood thanks to opportunity zones, a plan spearheaded by Senator Tim Scott as part of our great, Republican tax cuts,” the president said.

Almost all Democrats in the chamber, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remained sitting at that point, but Sinema stood up to applaud.

“In other words, wealthy people and companies are pouring money into poor neighborhoods or areas that haven’t seen investment in many decades, creating jobs, energy, and excitement,” Trump said.

That Baupost Group founder Seth Klarman doesn’t think that President Trump is going to make hedge funds—or anything else—Great Again shouldn’t surprise. The somewhat reclusive, famously press-shy hedge funder in August stepped out from the shadows back in August to endorse Hillary Clinton, pronouncing it “simply unthinkable that Donald Trump could become our president.” He was, of course, right: It is unthinkable, and gets more so with each passing hour, regardless of the fact that it is also our reality. Now, Klarman’s not the only hedgie who would have preferred someone—anyone—other than the current occupant of the Oval Office be sitting in the White House right now. Bill Ackman and Paul Singer come to mind. But while Ackman has turned cheerleader and Singer has made accommodations, Klarman doesn’t buy the Trump rally or that anything good could come from the next 1,443 days.

“Exuberant investors have focused on the potential benefits of stimulative tax cuts, while mostly ignoring the risks from America-first protectionism and the erection of new trade barriers,” he wrote.

Contra the fairly widespread notion that Trump’s impulsiveness, combined with the ongoing regulatory bonfire, will bring about the market volatility that hedge funds crave, Klarman says to be careful of what you wish for.

“The big picture for investors is this: Trump is high volatility, and investors generally abhor volatility and shun uncertainty,” he wrote. “Not only is Trump shockingly unpredictable, he’s apparently deliberately so; he says it’s part of his plan.”

Oh yea, and those things he is “planning”? They’re not going to work. In fact, they’re probably going to be a disaster.

“President Trump may be able to temporarily hold off the sweep of automation and globalization by cajoling companies to keep jobs at home, but bolstering inefficient and uncompetitive enterprises is likely to only temporarily stave off market forces,” he continued. “While they might be popular, the reason the U.S. long ago abandoned protectionist trade policies is because they not only don’t work, they actually leave society worse off….”

“The Trump tax cuts could drive government deficits considerably higher,” Mr. Klarman wrote. “The large 2001 Bush tax cuts, for example, fueled income inequality while triggering huge federal budget deficits. Rising interest rates alone would balloon the federal deficit, because interest payments on the massive outstanding government debt would skyrocket from today’s artificially low levels….”

“If things go wrong, we could find ourselves at the beginning of a lengthy decline in dollar hegemony, a rapid rise in interest rates and inflation, and global angst.”

With that off his chest, Klarman acknowledges that Trumponomics isn’t the only problem, or rather that it is just a manifestation of a larger problem, which is to say: us. Klarman’s not going to pretend that hedge funds have been worth 2 and 20 recently, but what do you expect when tons of dumb money chase returns from 15 years ago? Luckily for the savvy, dumb money goes both ways.

“When money flows into an index fund or index-related E.T.F., the manager generally buys into the securities in an index in proportion to their current market capitalization (often to the capitalization of only their public float, which interestingly adds a layer of distortion, disfavoring companies with large insider, strategic, or state ownership),” he wrote. “Thus today’s high-multiple companies are likely to also be tomorrow’s, regardless of merit, with less capital in the hands of active managers to potentially correct any mispricings….”

“This should give long-term value investors a distinct advantage,” he wrote. “The inherent irony of the efficient market theory is that the more people believe in it and correspondingly shun active management, the more inefficient the market is likely to become.”

This is strange, since they ended last night, and traditionally, one learns the winners and losers of these kinds of things in less than 20 hours or whatever. U.S. trade deficit falls in 2019 for first time in 6 years

The U.S. trade deficit surged in the final month of 2019 after the U.S. and China struck an interim deal to ease trade tensions.

The trade deficit fell slightly in 2019 to mark the first decline in six years, mostly reflecting U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods that reduced the flow of imports from the Asian giant.

The U.S. deficit slipped 1.7% to $617 billion last year from almost $628 billion in 2018. Last year’s trade gap was the highest in a decade.

Earlier in the year American wholesalers rushed to import goods from China before stiffer U.S. tariffs kicked in and they cut back in the fall after the Trump administration raised duties.

An interim trade deal signed by the U.S. and China that reduces some tariffs and seeks to ease tensions could lead to a rebound in Chinese imports in 2020. But the outbreak of the coronavirus adds another X-factor that could also severely disrupt global trade the world economy if it spreads, analysts say.

The annual trade deficit declined in 2019 even though the gap in December rose for the first time in four months. The deficit shot up 12% in December to $48.9 billion, the government said Wednesday. In 2019, the U.S. petroleum deficit shrank to $13.7 billion to mark the lowest level on record. The U.S. has become an energy superpower again and the world’s biggest producer of oil and natural gas thanks to the fracking revolution.

Auto exports fell, however.

Imports rose an even faster 2.7% to $258.5 billion in December, led by incoming shipments of crude oil, computer chips, cell phones and precious metals for industrial use. The U.S. still imports a lot of crude oil that it refines and ships to the U.S. and other parts of the world.

Imports of goods from China tumbled nearly 18% for the full year, slowing to $345.6 billion in 2019 from a record $419.5 billion in 2018.

Rising deficits with other nations, however, prevented the total U.S. deficit from falling very much last year. Companies merely shifted to other foreign sources such as Vietnam, Mexico and South America for goods that became too expensive to buy from China. Imports from Europe also rose.

As a result, the U.S. registered record trade deficits in goods with all those trading partners in 2019.

California bill seeks takeover of nation's largest utility

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Frustrated by repeated safety lapses at the nation's largest electric company, a California lawmaker on Monday introduced legislation that would force taxpayers to buy the struggling utility and turn it into a public entity with a safety-first mission ahead of shareholder profits.

The proposal follows the bankruptcy filing last year by Pacific Gas & Electric after sections of its sprawling network of power lines were knocked down in windstorms and started wildfires that killed dozens of people and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Since then, the company has intentionally shut off power to millions of people during windstorms to prevent wildfires and avoid liability.

Under the proposed legislation, taxpayers would borrow money to purchase all shares of Pacific Gas & Electric, which has a market value of about $9 billion, and turn it into a public entity subject to open-records laws. Local governments would have a chance to buy pieces of the network to start their own municipal power districts.

“PG&E is a failed company," said state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco who wrote the bill. “PG&E focuses so extensively on pleasing Wall Street and creating returns and dividends for shareholders, it has allowed its infrastructure to deteriorate.”

As part of the bankruptcy case, PG&E is trying to settle claims with wildfire victims, insurers and government agencies for a total of $25.5 billion. Its plan needs approval by Gov. Gavin Newsom and state regulators so the utility can access a key state-mandated insurance fund to help soften future losses from wildfires.

So far, Newsom has rejected PG&E's plan, saying it doesn't do enough to lessen the company's debt so it can afford up to $50 billion of improvements to its electrical grid.

The governor has threatened to take over PG&E if it doesn't make acceptable changes. Wiener's bill is the first glimpse of what a takeover might look like. Wiener's office said it has discussed the bill with the Newsom administration and he has not ruled it out.

PG&E said it is “firmly convinced” a government takeover won't work.

“PG&E's facilities are not for sale,” company spokesman James Noonan said. “We remain focused on fairly resolving wildfire claims and existing the (bankruptcy) process as quickly as possible.”

He said other recent takeover attempts of utilities have largely failed due to a range of factors.

Wiener's proposal is modeled after the Long Island Power Authority, which in 1998 borrowed nearly $7 billion to purchase the infrastructure of the former Long Island Lighting Company. However, in 2013, amid escalating debt, the authority was forced to hire an investor-owned utility to manage the electric system, according to a report by Concentric Energy Advisors.

Last week, PG&E pledged to overhaul its board of directors to avoid a state takeover. Newsom's administration has not yet responded to that plan.

Wiener's news conference announcing his bill was disrupted by a raucous group of roughly three dozen people from the local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The union represents about 12,000 PG&E employees.

The workers held signs demanding pensions and jobs be protected, and they shouted at Wiener and other speakers, protesting statements that public ownership would make the state safer or lower electric rates.

“People are going to lose their jobs, that’s an absolute guarantee that our workers will lose their jobs and that’s not acceptable,” said utility worker Kristen Rasmussen, 53, of Stockton.

Wiener dismissed the idea of a bureaucratic bungling of a takeover, saying the legislation will protect workers, including their collective bargaining agreements, wages, and benefits.

“You could defend PG&E if you want, but how is that going? They’re burning down entire towns, they are blacking out the power to millions of people," Wiener said. "PG&E is a failure and we need to try something new.”

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on February 5 that he was barring Bulgarian Specialized Criminal Court Judge Andon Mitalov from entry to the US because of what a State Department statement alleged to be Mitalov’s ” involvement in significant corruption”.

“In his official capacity, Mitalov was involved in corrupt acts that undermined the rule of law and severely compromised the independence of democratic institutions in Bulgaria,” Pompeo alleged in the statement.

Pompeo also barred Mitalov’s wife Kornelia Stoykova-Mitalova, and his daughter, Gergana Mitalova, from entry to the US.

Exclusive: U.S. halts secretive drone program with Turkey over Syria incursion

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has halted a secretive military intelligence cooperation program with Turkey that for years helped Ankara target Kurdish PKK militants, four U.S. officials told Reuters.

The U.S. decision to indefinitely suspend the program, which has not been previously reported, was made in response to Turkey’s cross-border military incursion into Syria in October, the U.S. officials said, revealing the extent of the damage to ties between the NATO allies from the incident.

The U.S. officials, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the United States late last year stopped flying the intelligence collection missions that targeted the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which both the United States and Turkey classify as terrorists.

The U.S. military had carried out the missions using unarmed drone aircraft, which one official said were flown out of Turkey’s Incirlik air base, where the U.S. military has a significant presence. The base is also a key hub for U.S. spy agencies operating in the region.

The U.S. drone flights that took place within the program, in place since 2007, often zeroed in on mountainous territory in northern Iraq near the Turkish border, another official said.

A Pentagon spokeswoman did not directly comment on any specific programs but noted that the United States has designated the PKK a terrorist organization since 1997.

“We have supported Turkey in their fight against the PKK in many ways for decades. As a matter of policy, we do not provide details on operational matters,” the spokeswoman said, when asked about a halt in assistance.

A State Department spokesperson said the United States does not comment on intelligence matters.

Officials from the Turkish defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment, but a Turkish official confirmed the program was stopped.

The halt to U.S. assistance will test the limits of Turkey’s military and intelligence capabilities at a time when its forces are already deployed on multiple fronts in northern Syria and as Ankara mulls deeper engagement in Libya.

“This makes the anti-PKK campaign more difficult and more costly for Turkey,” one of the four U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said.

It also adds to a laundry list of grievances between the United States and Turkey, including Ankara’s purchase of Russian air defenses and broader splits over the war in Syria, despite what appears to be a strong relationship between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan.

Final details of first auction will come in May

The Treasury Department on Wednesday gave new details of the structure of the new 20-year bond, which market observers expect to be sold in May for the first time since 1986.

The department said it plans to hold regular quarterly auctions of the new 20-year bonds, in February, May, August and November. Each auction will be followed by two reopenings in subsequent months. Market experts suggested to the department that the initial auction size be set at $10-$13 billion. Treasury said only that it will announce the timing and size of the first 20-year bond auction in May.

The department also took a step toward offering a floating-rate note indexed to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate or “SOFR. This is the government’s preferred alternative to the scandal-plagued Libor benchmark rate. Treasury said it would release a formal request for information from market participants to assess the potential demand for the SOFR-indexed note. As part of its regular quarterly refunding, Treasury announced it will sell $84 billion in notes and bonds next week. This is the same size as the package announced last quarter.

The newly-created US Space Force has test-fired a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time as Russia blasted it for “lowering the bar” on using nuclear weapons.

The unarmed land-based missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California shortly after midnight on Wednesday. It was the first such development test since the facility became part of the US Space Force, which was established as an independent military branch in late December. The US previously test-fired a missile of this type in October.

The Minuteman missiles are the key component of the US' land-based nuclear arsenal. The launch was crucial to the work on further “testing and evaluation of the ICBM program, and many space and range programs to come,” 30th Operations Group commander Colonel Kris Barcomb said.

I end a lot of articles about how the Democrats really feel about you by telling you to vote accordingly, but Trump’s State of the Union speech highlighted the Democrat’s utter contempt for President Donald Trump, you, and this country last night as they sat through almost every applause line that celebrated you doing well.

As the GOP highlighted in a video they posted to Twitter, the Democrats heard about the all-time low unemployment levels of the black community, the Hispanic community, the young adult community, and more. This should be a reason to celebrate. We should see our elected leaders getting to their feet and showing support, but instead only half the room decided to stand.

The other half, the Democrats, sat still, arms folded, and practically seethed at times.

JPMorgan’s Role in Metals Spoofing Is Under U.S. Criminal Probe

U.S. authorities that accused six JPMorgan Chase & Co. employees of rigging precious-metals futures are building a criminal case against the bank itself, two people familiar with the situation said.

The previously unreported investigation of the global bank’s parent company, part of a wide-ranging federal clampdown on market manipulation, raises the prospect of criminal charges and significant fines against America’s largest bank.

No formal accusations have been made against JPMorgan. A bank spokeswoman, Jessica Francisco, declined to comment and pointed to company filings from last year disclosing that the Justice Department’s Criminal Division was investigating “trading practices in the metals markets and related conduct.”

How the probe proceeds from here is likely to be watched closely. Relatively few big-bank prosecutions have come to light during the Trump administration, compared with a spate of big penalties and guilty pleas for banks under President Barack Obama. The Justice Department declined to comment.

Investigators at the Justice Department and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission are at least two years into their examination of trading on JPMorgan’s precious metals desk, one of the people said. U.S. authorities have already charged bank traders who worked in New York, London and Singapore with manipulating thousands of orders for gold and silver futures to benefit the bank and its major hedge fund clients.

Their campaign of manipulation and spoofing - placing orders and then canceling them to trick other market participants - spanned a decade, prosecutors said. Although other suspected market cheats have been charged with specific spoofing and manipulation offenses, the Justice Department accused JPMorgan metals traders under the so-called RICO statute - a criminal racketeering law more commonly applied to mafia cases than global bank probes.

Authorities are conducting a similar racketeering investigation of a second financial firm involving spoofing, according to a third person familiar with the matter.

RICO allows for prosecutors to charge multiple criminal acts involving a group of people in the same case as long as they were part of the same enterprise. The Justice Department said the racketeering conspiracy on the JPMorgan metals desk ran between March 2008 and August 2016. Two former metals traders for the bank have pleaded guilty to fraud charges and are cooperating with authorities.

Among those fighting charges are Michael Nowak, who remained active as the global head of JPMorgan’s precious metals desk until he was indicted under seal in August.

After the arrest of Nowak and two others in September, Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski said investigators would “follow the facts wherever they lead, whether it’s across desks here or at any other bank or upwards into the financial institution.”

Despite the charges against several individuals over precious-metals trading, the Justice Department hasn’t announced any criminal charges against big banks.

Missouri Businessman Arrested on Antitrust Charge for Rigging Bids at Online Government Auctions

A federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Alan Gaines, a Missouri resident, with participating in a conspiracy to rig bids submitted to the General Services Administration (GSA) at online auctions for surplus government equipment, the Department of Justice announced.

According to the indictment filed in the U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, Gaines conspired to rig bids at public online GSA auctions of surplus government equipment from about July 2012 until as late as May 2018. Gaines is the third individual charged in this investigation. Two co-conspirators, Marshall Holland and Igor Yurkovetsky, previously pleaded guilty in the investigation.

“Rigging bids at government auctions cheats taxpayers out of the benefits of competition and steals from the public purse,” said Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim of the Department of Justice. “This indictment affirms the Division’s commitment to safeguarding online markets and holding to account individuals who rig bids.”

“The general public deserves a level playing field when doing business with the government,” said GSA Inspector General Carol Ochoa. “GSA OIG is committed to prosecuting individuals who corrupt the system put in place for fair and competitive bidding.”

The GSA operates GSA Auctions, which offers the general public the opportunity to bid electronically on a wide variety of federal assets, including computer equipment that is no longer needed by government agencies. GSA Auctions sells that equipment via its online auctions, and the proceeds of the auctions are distributed to the government agencies or the U.S. Treasury general fund. According to the charge, the primary purpose of the conspiracy was to suppress and eliminate competition. Additionally, the co-conspirators obtained the equipment by agreeing which co-conspirators would submit bids for particular lots offered for sale by GSA Auctions and which co-conspirator would be designated to win a particular lot.

Gaines is charged with violating the Sherman Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $1 million criminal fine for individuals. The maximum fine may be increased to twice the gain derived from the crime or twice the loss suffered by the victims of the crime, if either of those amounts is greater than the statutory maximum fine. An indictment merely alleges that crimes have been committed, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Justice Department Releases $500 Million in Solicitations for Hiring Law Enforcement Officers, Improving School Safety and Combating Distribution of Illicit Drugs

The Justice Department announced that the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) has released over $500 million in grant solicitations under the COPS Hiring Program (CHP) and several other grant programs that advance community policing, keep school students safe and promote the health and safety of our nation’s law enforcement officers.

“There is no more noble a profession than serving as a law enforcement officer and putting your life on the line to protect your community. Our police officers fight an unrelenting fight, and it is more important than ever to support them,” said COPS Office Director Phil Keith. “This funding will provide critical support to state, local, and tribal agencies so that they can bolster their ranks and reinforce community policing strategies and programs, and further our commitment to reducing violent crime.”

The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers. In addition to providing financial support for hiring, CHP provides funding to state, local, and tribal law enforcement to enhance local community policing strategies and tactics. In a changing economic climate, CHP funding helps law enforcement agencies maintain sufficient sworn personnel levels to keep their communities safe. Funding through this program had been on hold since the spring of 2018 due to a nationwide injunction, which was recently lifted.

The 2020 Community Policing Development Program will fund projects related to a Law Enforcement Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Program Toolkit; Recruiting the Next Generation of Officers and Deputies; Promising Practices in Law Enforcement Victim Support; Rural Law Enforcement Training Center; and Managing High-Risk Law Enforcement Vehicular Pursuits. This grant program provides guidance on promising practices through the development and testing of innovative strategies; building knowledge about effective practices and outcomes; and supporting new, creative approaches to preventing crime and promoting safe communities.

The Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act Program provides funding to improve the delivery of and access to mental health and wellness services for law enforcement through training and technical assistance, demonstration projects, and implementation of promising practices related to peer mentoring mental health and wellness programs. This year’s program will fund projects related to Peer Support Implementation Projects and a National Peer Support Program for Small and Rural Agencies.

The Preparing for Active Shooter Situations Program provides funding for scenario-based training that prepares officers and other first responders to safely and effectively handle active-shooter and other violent threats. This year’s program will train at least 20,000 first responders through scenario-based, multi-disciplinary training classes.

The COPS Office Anti-Heroin Task Force Program advances public safety by providing funds directly to state law enforcement to locate and investigate illicit activities through statewide collaboration related to the distribution of heroin, fentanyl, or carfentanil or the unlawful distribution of prescription opioids.

The COPS Anti-Methamphetamine Program is designed to investigate illicit activities related to the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine. Funding must be used to locate or investigate illicit activities such as precursor diversion, laboratories, or methamphetamine traffickers.

The STOP School Violence Prevention Program provides funding to improve security at schools and on school grounds in the grantees’ jurisdictions through evidence-based school safety programs.

TRUMP WON THE NIGHT!

Americans cheered President Trump’s historic State of the Union Address tonight.

Undoubtedly, this was the best address in modern history!

No President in decades has had the success like this great president.

Although the leftie Democrat media panned the speech, ordinary Americans cheered this President’s success.

And President Trump won with American voters with his positive and uplifting message.

President Trump received an 82% approval rating from Independent voters.

Via CBS News:

76% of speech watchers approved of the president’s address.

97% of Republicans approved of the speech.

And 56% of viewers said the president’s historic address will unite the country.

Packed passenger plane overshoots runway in Istanbul, splits into several pieces

A passenger plane has overrun runway at Sabiha Gokcen airport in Istanbul, Turkey. Apparent footage from the scene shows the aircraft broken into two pieces with flames emitting from its fuselage.

The incident occurred at the international airport on Wednesday. The domestic flight from Izmir overran the runway during landing, according to local media reports.

Footage from the scene shows the plane, belonging to the low-cost Turkish airline Pegasus, broken into several pieces with flames coming from its fuselage.

The plane broke into at least three large pieces, footage from the scene shows and people were seen evacuating through a large crack in the aircraft’s side. The cockpit apparently became completely detached from the rest of the frame and was seen lying upside down by the plane’s side.

Amazon Drops After Bezos Sells $1.8 Billion In Stock

Amazon has turned red on the day, erasing some of its massive post-earnings gains, following a report that CEO Jeff Bezos sold 0.2% of the company for $1.8 billion. However, before investors decide that the CEO is calling the top, note that Bezos sold 905,456 Amazon shares on Friday and Monday under a pre-arranged trading plan, the filings reveal.

Putting that number in context, Bloomberg observes that in the 15 years after Amazon went public, Bezos sold a fifth of the company for $2 billion. So in the past few days, he sold shares equal to roughly one-hundreth of this stake for roughy similar proceeds. The latest liquidation brings the newly divorced bachelor's total stock sales to about $12 billion, with two-thirds of those occurring in the past four years, according to calculations by Bloomberg.

Other recent transaction by Bezos include the sale of $2 billion in 2017 and $2.8 billion in 2019, and reflect Amazon’s soaring valuation, which closed above $1 trillion for the first time on Tuesday.

An alleged survivor of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse who says he began molesting her when she was 14 will be at the State of the Union as a guest of California congresswoman Jackie Speier.

Today, Courtney Wild, 31, campaigns against the sort of plea deal that in 2008 allowed Epstein to negotiate a 13-month sentence and access a work-release program so he could use his own office. And her name is on the draft of a bill aimed at preventing those deals in the future.

Her presence will serve as a reminder of the allegations of sexism and worse directed at Epstein’s nearby neighbor in Palm Beach, President Trump.

“By attending this year’s SOTU as my distinguished guest, Courtney is helping me send a clear message that women are done with being treated as second-class citizens in our own country,” Speier said. “We are standing up for what is right and to ensure that those who continue to subvert the rule of law and those who fail to hold perpetrators responsible for their malign deeds will not succeed.”

Speier is also a member of the Democratic Women's Caucus, which last month sent a letter to Trump criticizing his “derogation of women.”

“It is as if you relish the opportunity to publicly humiliate any woman who fights back, speaks up, or takes up space,” they wrote after Trump made a joke about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s clash with a female NPR correspondent.

Wild sued the Department of Justice in 2008 on the grounds that prosecutors did not consult with alleged victims before reaching a deal with Epstein, rendering the agreement illegal under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act. But Epstein’s death last year at the age of 66 as he awaited trial meant the case was rendered moot and thrown out.

For her part, Wild told the Miami Herald she was “super excited” to attend the State of the Union.

“I think it shows that we have come a long way,” she said. “Hopefully, at the end of it, I would really like to give back to educate our children about sexual abuse and awareness. That’s my goal."

“It’s like giving me a second chance at life,” she added.

The grandstanding between President Trump and Speaker Pelosi during the State of the Union address has triggered an avalanche of memes online, with Mike Pompeo taking part among others.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted a ‘Simpsons’ meme showing a tearful Lisa Simpson tearing papers into shreds in season 3 of the popular series.

The obvious dig at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who tore in half her copy of President Donald Trump’s state of the union speech after he seemingly refused to shake her hand, appeared on Pompeo’s personal Twitter account.

Pelosi later said that tearing up the speech – a “manifesto of mistruths,” as she put it – was “the courteous thing to do, considering the alternatives.”

The animosity between the two escalated this year as Pelosi led a successful House effort to impeach Trump on allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. His Senate trial is widely expected to end in acquittal this week.

Public reaction to Tuesday’s grandstanding seems divided along party lines. Republicans bashed Pelosi for disgracing the achievements mentioned in the speech. Democrats call her a “legend” and a “hero.”

Some hinted that making grand gestures like this is easier for Democrats than, say, blocking his military budget.

The Pentagon Tuesday said it has deployed a new low-yield submarine-launched ballistic missile armed with a nuclear warhead to counter Russia’s arsenal of smaller tactical nuclear weapons.

"This supplemental capability strengthens deterrence and provides the United States a prompt, more survivable low-yield strategic weapon," John Rood, the undersecretary of defense for policy, said in a statement.

He says the weapon, known as W76-2, lowers the risk of nuclear war.

Critics say low-yield nuclear weapons lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons, increasing the risk of nuclear war. And while W76-2’s strength is classified, experts say it likely has around one-third the power of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

The Trump administration aims to dissuade Russia from thinking it could win a war in Europe if the country used its own low-yield weapons first, trying to force the U.S. to either surrender or respond with full-scale nuclear war.

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash, said "The administration’s decision to deploy the W76-2 warhead remains a misguided and dangerous one," Reuters reported. "The deployment of this warhead does nothing to make Americans safer."

Bruce Blair, co-founder of Global Zero, an international group advocating for the elimination of nuclear arms, also opposes W76-2 and testified in front of Congress last year.

“We must not delude ourselves into thinking lower-yield nukes are more usable in a conflict,” the former Air Force nuclear weapons officer testified.

“Any use of this sea-based weapon - either first or second - will risk stoking the flames of conflict and escalating to all-out nuclear war," Blair said. "A wiser response to an enemy’s use of one or two low-yield nukes would be to refrain from nuclear escalation while unleashing America’s ferocious and decisive conventional juggernaut.”
