Still digging but believe Governor Roy Cooper could also be playing a role in this.

Based on loud protests concerning the confederate monuments and the damage being inflicted on them, Governor Cooper called to remove the monuments. Because he does not have permission according to existing laws to simply remove them, he asked the NC Historical Commission for permission to do so.

The Historical Commission ultimately recommended that the monuments stay where they are, that signs be posted near them to give historical context, and that more statues representing African Americans be erected. They also urged cooperation between Governor and government representatives.

John Davis, Nancy New and Others Arrested in Massive Embezzlement Scheme

The following is a verbatim release from the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor:

JACKSON, Miss. – Special agents from the office of State Auditor Shad White have arrested John Davis, the former Director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS); former DHS employee Latimer Smith; Dr. Nancy New, owner and Director of the Mississippi Community Education Center (MCEC) and New Learning, Inc.; Zach New, Assistant Executive Director of MCEC; Anne McGrew, accountant for MCEC; and Brett DiBiase in connection with a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scheme. The indictments include a range of violations involving fraud and embezzlement. Auditors concluded, after an eight-month investigation, that the accused conspired to illegally obtain millions in public funds from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program administered by DHS. Defendants used a variety of business entities and schemes to defraud the taxpayers. “The funds that were illegally obtained in this case were intended to help the poorest among us. The funds were instead taken by a group of influential people for their own benefit, and the scheme is massive. It ends today,” said Auditor White.

Davis and Smith stand accused of fraudulently manufacturing documents to enrich Brett DiBiase using TANF money. Davis and Smith created invoices to pay DiBiase TANF funds for teaching classes about drug abuse, but DiBiase was in a luxury rehabilitation facility for his own drug use in California at the time and did not perform the services. Davis and Smith created documents and arranged payment knowing DiBiase was not performing the work he was hired to perform. Nancy New and her son, Zach New, stand accused of using the News’ non-profit, MCEC, to pay for DiBiase’s drug treatment using TANF funds. At Davis’ direction, MCEC used TANF money received from DHS to pay for DiBiase’s opioid treatment at the Rise in Malibu facility. The documentation submitted by the News claimed this was to pay DiBiase for conducting training classes that never, in fact, took place. The News also stand accused of transferring millions in TANF funds to their private businesses. They then converted funds to their personal use and concealed the conversion through various fund transfers, fraudulent documents, at least one forged signature, and deceptive accounting measures. Finally, Davis and the News are accused of creating a fraud scheme to take TANF funds to pay for personal investments in medical device companies (Prevacus, Inc., and PreSolMD, LLC) in Florida.

“I don’t care how politically connected a person may be. You do not have the right to treat taxpayer money as your own or to lie to the taxpayers about what you’re doing with that money. Others doing this kind of thing are on notice: this will not be tolerated now,” said White. All accused were indicted by a grand jury assembled by Jody Owens, District Attorney of Hinds County. District Attorney Owens and assistant district attorneys will prosecute the case.

“The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office looks forward to working with the State Auditor Shad White and his dedicated team to end public corruption in Mississippi,” said Owens. “The misuse of government funds designed for families in need will not be tolerated by our office and those who break the law will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible.” “We have worked tirelessly in the Auditor’s office to uncover this sprawling conspiracy, so I want to thank the investigators, auditors, and analysts who all assisted,” added White.

The total amount of money lost to these schemes has not yet been determined, but the loss already exceeds any embezzlement scheme in the records of the Auditor’s office. Records are kept for all cases from the last twenty years. Because of the large amount of money involved, and until the full extent of the loss to the taxpayers is determined, this is considered an ongoing investigation by the Auditor’s office. There will be no additional comments at this time. If convicted on all counts, the accused face hundreds of years in prison. Persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

New York man attacked by MS-13, who was set to testify against them, found dead

A New York man willing to testify against MS-13 members who attacked him in 2018 was found dead earlier this week after his identity was disclosed to defendants' attorneys in pre-trial proceedings, police say. The bludgeoned body of 36-year-old Wilmer Maldonado Rodriguez was found Sunday outside an abandoned home in New Cassel,

Singas says prosecutors tried to keep Rodriguez’s identity secret by obtaining a protective order in December 2018.

But last December, ahead of looming changes to New York’s criminal justice system, including reforming the pre-trial discovery phase – during which prosecutors reveal evidence to the defense for preparation – the judge in the case issued a new order.

It allowed “for the disclosure of the protected information to defense counsel,” Newsday reports. The judge’s order, it added, required attorneys for two defendants not to reveal Rodriguez' s name to their clients until the trial’s start date of Jan. 6.

However, Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said Wednesday that the trial was delayed.

Mueller’s “pit bull” Andrew Weissmann admitted the special counsel’s team “tried to get rid of” President Trump by laying a perjury trap.

Of course President Trump didn’t fall for it.

President Trump only submitted written answers to Mueller’s team and refused to sit down for an interview with the special counsel’s prosecutors.

Many believe devil Weissmann was in charge of the entire special counsel operation and Robert Mueller was just the figurehead.

Weissmann’s comments during a Thursday appearance on MSNBC were in response to President Trump’s scorched earth rebuke of the ‘scum’ at the top of the FBI earlier this morning.

Trump blasted “dirty cops” James Comey and “scum” Peter Strzok on Thursday before calling out Mueller’s corruption in his victory speech after the senate voted to acquit him on both articles of impeachment.

“[Trump] never submitted to an interview, he never testified under oath — it’s true the same happened in the Mueller case,” Weissmann said.

“Why do you think that is?” Nicolle Wallace asked.

“There’s a classic reason. There is legal jeopardy that attaches if you sit for an interview or if you say something under oath to federal prosecutors, to the House, to the Senate — so if you notice, the President is happy to talk today…but when it came time for him to put up or shut up…and give an interview under oath, he’s completely silent,” Weissmann added.

Weissmann forgot to add that only Trump supporters are prosecuted for making false statements to the feds.

Mueller, Clapper, Brennan and Comey have all perjured themselves yet they have never been held accountable for their crimes.

Envoy to NATO Says US Prepares for Talks With Russia About Next Level of Arms Control Accords

The Trump administration is preparing to begin talks with Russia about the next level of arms control agreements, United States Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said during an event at the Heritage Foundation.

"I know that our administration is preparing to begin talks with Russia and make an effort to bring China in for the next level of arms control agreements", Hutchison said on Thursday in response to a question about what would the implications to NATO be if the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) is not extended.

Hutchison highlighted that China is becoming a concern because of global presence through its Belt and Road Initiative in addition to its nuclear weapons capabilities.

On Wednesday, US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien said the United States and Russia will launch talks on nuclear arms control issues in the near future.

The New START is the last remaining arms control treaty in force between Russia and the United States and is set to expire in February 2021.

The Trump administration has said it has a sufficient amount of time to determine whether it will extend the treaty or let it expire next February. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reiterated that Russia wants to extend the New START as soon as possible, but without preconditions.

5 dead in plane crash in Southwest Alaska, troopers say

Five people died in a plane crash southwest of Bethel on Thursday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers said.

A Yute Air commuter plane, headed to Kipnuk from Bethel, crashed 12 miles southwest of Tuntutuliak around 1:45 p.m. according to an online release from the troopers. The plane had four passengers and one pilot aboard.

Rescuers from multiple agencies responded to the crash, said Candis Olmstead, the Army National Guard’s director of public affairs.

An Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter was dispatched out of Bethel. Rescuers, including including a trooper and two LifeMed Alaska medics, were on the scene at 4:15 p.m., Olmstead said.

According to preliminary information from the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane, a Piper PA-32, crashed under unknown circumstances, said Allen Kenitzer in the FAA’s Office of Communications. Kenitzer said that both the FAA and the National Transportation Board would investigate the crash.

Troopers said they are working to notifying the victims’ next of kin.

On 2-6-20 at about 1342 hours, Bethel AST was notified of an overdue Yute Air commuter aircraft that was traveling from Bethel to Kipnuk with one pilot and four passengers onboard. At 1350 hours, the plane was located crashed approximately 12 miles southwest of Tuntutuliak. RCC launched a Blackhawk from bethel to the scene and confirmed that all five aboard are deceased. AST is currently attempting to notify next of kin. NTSB has been notified.

Trump Announces Leader Of Al-Qaeda In Yemen Killed By US Drone Strike

Thursday evening President Trump announced the death of al-Qaeda's chief in Yemen by a US drone strike. The New York Times first reported last week the likely death of Qasim al-Rimi, the founder and leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in a US airstrike, which the president has now confirmed. Days ago Saudi media also began reporting his death. "Under Rimi, AQAP committed unconscionable violence against civilians in Yemen and sought to conduct and inspire numerous attacks against the United States and our forces," Trump said in a White House official statement. "His death further degrades AQAP and the global al-Qa’ida movement, and it brings us closer to eliminating the threats these groups pose to our national security."

The successful counter-terror operation also reportedly killed an unspecified deputy of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. This other top al-Qaeda operative's name was not immediately given. The State Department had issued a $10 million reward for information leading to Rimi's capture. Interestingly, he's alleged to have directly threatened attack on President Trump. According to the Rewards for Justice statement: On February 5, 2017, al-Rimi released an audiotape in which he threatened U.S. President Donald Trump. In a May 7, 2017 video, he urged supporters living in Western countries to conduct “easy and simple” attacks and praised Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people in a June 2016 mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando Florida.

US intelligence had also linked him to a 2008 attack on the US Embassy in Yemen, and to the 2009 "underwear bomber'' plot to blow up a US-bound airliner. The State Department's brief bio information indicates Rimi was active in Sunni jihadist activities and leadership going back to the 1990's: Qasim al-Rimi was named emir of AQAP in June 2015, immediately after he swore allegiance to al-Qa’ida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and called for renewed attacks against the United States. Al-Rimi trained terrorists at an al-Qa’ida camp in Afghanistan in the 1990’s, and subsequently returned to Yemen and became an AQAP military commander. According to CNN, Rimi had long been at the top of Trump's list of desired kills or captures: "Rimi was a target of a January 2017 raid on an al Qaeda compound in Yemen that led to the first US military combat death under the President, a senior US military official told CNN at the time." Days after the raid Rimi had released an audio message calling Trump "the new fool of the White House received a painful slap across his face." But clearly it's America's Commander-in-Chief who had the last laugh.

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - U.S. Capitol Police have given the all-clear after they responded to investigate a suspicious substance at Rep. Adam Schiff’s office, according to FOX News.

FOX News’ Chad Pergram broke the news just after 10:30 a.m. EST on Thursday.

Pergram reported that Capitol Police were investigating the substance at Room 2269 of the Rayburn House Office Building, which is Schiff's office. Authorities had asked people to avoid the area during the investigation.

Just before noon, Capitol Police said the scene was cleared and nothing hazardous was found.

Prince Andrew's reputation has plummeted recently, following a tell-all interview about his relationship with the late suspected child rapist Jeffrey Epstein and claims that he sexually abused one of Epstein’s victims.

The government’s decision to celebrate Prince Andrew’s birthday by flying the UK’s national flag has apparently irked some lawmakers because of the royal’s ties with Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince Andrew is on the list of royals – including high-profile members of the royal family such as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip – whose birthday is marked by town halls across the county flying the Union Jack at full-mast all day.

An aide to Dame Melanie Dawes, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, has reportedly sent out an email to local governments reminding them to fly the flag for Prince Andrew on 19 February.

Labour MPs Wes Streeting and Ian Murray blasted the order.

Streeting told The Sun: “This would be wholly inappropriate. It should be knocked on the head immediately.”

Murray, a candidate for deputy party leader, said: “This protocol has to be binned, given the allegations against the Prince.”

The Duke of York, 59, had been friends with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a well-connected US money manager who was accused of sex trafficking around two dozen women and was also a registered sex offender. Many of the victims claim they were underage when the alleged crimes happened.

One of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, has alleged that she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew three times between 2001, when she was 17, and 2002. She claimed that she was trafficked to the UK in 2001 and partied with the Prince at a London nightclub, before having sex with him at the house of Epstein’s suspected “madame”, British media heiress Ghislaine Maxwell.

Prince Andrew has categorically rejected the allegations and gave a scandalous TV interview in November in which he stated that he had no recollection of ever meeting Giuffre. He insisted that he could not have met with Giuffre on the night she claimed because he was with his daughter at a pizza restaurant on that particular day.

There is a photograph contradicting what Andrew said, which shows him alongside Giuffre at Maxwell’s house. He suggested that the photo was a fake.

The Prince stepped down from public duties after his interview provoked a massive public backlash, and the Queen reportedly cancelled his 60th birthday.

The FBI steps in

Andrew’s memory was further called into question after an attorney representing six of Epstein’s accusers said that a witness saw the Prince at a nightclub with Giuffre in 2001. The attorney, Lisa Bloom, said she referred that account to the FBI, which is investigating possible crimes by Epstein and his accomplices.

Prince Andrew earlier indicated that he was eager to help with the probe. However, US attorney Geoffrey Berman said last week that the Prince was unresponsive to the FBI’s request for cooperation.

London’s Metropolitan Police is also mulling a probe into “Epstein’s friends and associates” that could possibly target Andrew.

State Department: Citgo 6 moved from house arrest to prison

Feb. 6 (UPI) - Six U.S. oil executives held in Venezuela have been moved to the country's infamous Helicoide prison, the State Department revealed Thursday. In a briefing with reporters, Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams said the State Department has learned that the oil executives known as the "Citgo 6" were rounded up Wednesday by SEBIN, the nation's intelligence agency, and transported to the prison in the capital Caracas. "We condemn this cruel and indefensible action and demand that their long, unjust detention come to an end and they be allowed to leave Venezuela," Abrams said during the briefing. The five dual U.S.-Venezuelan citizens and one U.S. permanent resident are employees of the Houston-based oil refiner Citgo, which is owned by Venezuelan state-run PDVSA.

The six men were arrested in November 2017 and charged with corruption, which they deny. In December, after spending more than two years in a military intelligence facility, they were moved to house arrest, according to Share America, which is managed by the State Department. Abrams said the men were under house arrest in their own houses but that they were under constant surveillance and that their residences were most likely bugged. News of the roundup comes on the heels of President Donald Trump honoring opposition leader Juan Guaido - who has been trying to oust embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for over a year - in his State of the Union address on Sunday and then hosting the National Assembly leader to a state visit on Wednesday.

According to one of the men's legal representatives, the Citgo 6 were removed without warning or judicial order and are being held in the same cell. "Lawyers and relatives were not informed and they only information shared by the SEBIN officials on duty was that [they were taken away 'for medical checks,'" the legal team said in a statement, CNN reported. Abrams said he would not speculate on why the roundup occurred but said "the timing is suspicious."

During their previous detention, Abrams said the State Department had concerns over the men's health as it was unknown if they had access to doctors or medicine and that it takes their current situation "very seriously." He added they have made "a number of efforts" Thursday to gain information about their condition and gain their release from prison.

The United States has repeatedly escalated pressure on Maduro to step down to instigate a Democratic transition in the socialist nation since his re-election was deemed illegitimate in 2018. Guaido, who is the head of the National Assembly, which is the last bastion of democracy in Venezuela, appointed himself interim president in early 2019. The United States is one of nearly 60 mostly Western democracies to back Guaido's claim and has repeatedly imposed sanctions against the Maduro regime. However, despite the political and financial pressure, he has maintained his grip on power with the support of Russia and Cuba, the State Department has said. On Wednesday prior to the arrests, a senior administration official said they were planning to increase their maximum pressure campaign on Maduro. "You'll see some impactful measures within the next 30 days, which will be very important and further crippling on the Regime. On Thursday, Abrams warned Russia that they may soon learn that its support of Maduro "will no longer be cost-free." "You will see steps unfold in the coming weeks that demonstrate the seriousness of our intentions in Venezuela," he said. Citgo has been contacted for comment.

Just when you thought the lawmakers who run the State of California could not do anything dumber than all the things they’ve done or proposed before they surprise you.

Each day seems to bring some new outrage or some new law designed to control people or strip them of their existing rights or both.

This time, a new bill, if it became law, would force citizens to vote of face a yet to be determined civil penalty, as the Los Angeles Times reports.

“The proposal, introduced in the state Assembly on Tuesday, would be unprecedented and probably challenged in court should it ultimately become law. It would place the burden for determining the civil penalty and the ultimate punishment on the secretary of state, California’s chief elections officer.

“Democracy is not a spectator sport — it requires the active participation of all its citizens,” the bill’s author, Assemblyman Marc Levine, D-San Rafael, said in a written statement. “California is a national leader on expanding voting rights to its citizens. Those rights come with a responsibility by registered voters to cast their ballot and make sure that their voice is heard by their government.”

Levine’s effort, Assembly Bill 2070, would require every Californian who registers to vote to “cast a ballot, marked or unmarked in whole or in part, at every election held within the territory within which the person resides.” AB 2070 has yet to be referred to a policy committee and is unlikely to be considered until the spring.”

This sounds just like what every dictatorship requires. Mandatory voting or face a penalty.

Given that it’s California Democrats who are pushing this bill can you guess which party they expect mandatory voting to help?

It’s not just that it will help Democrats that makes it so bad, what makes it REALLY bad is the bill would gives the government the power to make you do something you may not want to do, or face a penalty.

It also mandates those who have no interest in voting cast votes they may have little or no information about.

This is a really bad idea. One that is so bad lets hope California Democrats have enough sense to kill it.

That said, it’s highly unlikely the folks who currently run the once great state of California will do anything smart. That seems outside the realm of their ability.

So we expect this bad idea to pass, then get shot down in court. Meanwhile grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Democrats just managed to ram two ambiguous articles of impeachment through the House, with no underlying crimes, and then tie up the Senate with a long, boring trial despite the fact that everyone already knew the whole thing was going nowhere. So lots of people are now thinking the impeachment process needs to be a little bit harder, otherwise MSNBC will just spend the remainder of Trump's presidency dreaming up novel ways to remove the president from office.

On Thursday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) announced that he would introduce a constitutional amendment upping the simple majority needed to pass articles of impeachment in the House to a three-fifths majority instead. But unlike passing articles of impeachment, adding a proposed amendment to the Constitution is actually somewhat difficult. Ratification requires two-thirds approval by both bodies of Congress, or a convention of the states, as well as the approval of three-fourths of state legislatures.

"It should be harder – much harder – for either political party to take the process our Founders created as a last resort against a tyrannical leader and use it instead as a tool for the tyranny of a political majority," Sen. Scott said in a statement. "I look forward to all of my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, joining me in this effort to protect the integrity of our nation and our constitution."

Additionally, 16 GOP senators are backing a proposed rules change by Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri. Under Hawley's proposal, the Speaker of the House couldn't sit on the articles of impeachment in an effort to extract concessions from the upper chamber. The articles would be deemed as received if the House failed to transmit the articles after 25 days of passage.

It would also allow a senator to try to dismiss the articles of impeachment.

The rules change was sparked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) delaying sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate after they first cleared the House late last year.

Democrats say the hold up allowed them to put a spotlight on their request for new witnesses and to let a slew of new reports come out about Trump's decision to delay Ukraine aid and his effort to get the country to help "look into" Democrats, including former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

But Hawley told The Hill in a recent interview that he wants to move forward with his proposed rules change so that it would be in place for any potential future trials.

"I think it's a good idea just because I think procedurally we want to make sure that basically the disjuncture between the House and the Senate rules aren't exploited in the future," he said.

While the proposed rule change could pass the Senate - Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is backing it - Democrats are unlikely to support any change to the impeachment process that concedes the past few months were nothing more than a partisan witch hunt orchestrated by House Democrats. But keeping the passage of impeachment articles to a simple majority in the House would make it easier for Republicans to give Democrats a taste of their own medicine the next time Democrats find themselves in control of the White House.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren used her election night speech in Iowa to thank the illegal immigrants who helped her Iowa campaign.

“Tonight is for every undocumented, unafraid organizer and volunteer who proudly knocked on doors to let the world know that the path to progress runs through courage, not fear,” she said February 4 to applause from her pro-migration supporters.

The illegal immigrants’ aid for Warren is rational because her immigration policy is promising a nationwide amnesty and a welcome for additional migrants:

Decriminalize migration and refocus enforcement on serious criminal activity. Entering the country without authorization has always been a violation of civil immigration law, but thanks to a former segregationist Senator, it’s also a criminal violation. This additional criminal provision is totally unnecessary for border security, and for a century, it was rarely enforced.

Raise the refugee cap. At a time when 70 million are displaced around the world, President Trump has abused his authority to lower the refugee cap for the United States, admitting just over 22,000 refugees in total last year. I’ll welcome 125,000 refugees in my first year, ramping up to at least 175,000 refugees per year by the end of my first term.

Warren is not the only Democrat who is being aided by migrants. NPR reported two migrants who are backing other Democratic candidates:

My take anon, I could be off-base. I feel like the the answer to the CN/RU communist part of the question vs. Iran DS control has something to do with the /_ . Dr Li Wenliang has died - this is the man who became a hero in China after trying to warn the medical community about the coronavirus. He was told to be quiet by the authorities - before weeks later being diagnosed with the virus himself. BBC Chinese reports that Dr Li was declared dead on Thursday evening.

But there's this too. "The news of his death triggered a huge wave of popular reaction on Weibo - China’s equivalent of Twitter.

Journalists and doctors at the scene who do not want their names used, told the BBC that officials then decided to control the flow of information by ordering the doctor to be put back on life support and to change all official media reports from death to in critical condition." That attempt to shut down the story, looks to have failed - and official Chinese media are now again reporting the death of Dr Li.

U.S. adds 225,000 jobs in January as hiring speeds up, unemployment rises to 3.6%

The U.S. created a robust 225,000 new jobs in January to get off to a good start in 2020, reflecting surprising resilience in the labor market despite a contraction in manufacturing and softer economic growth.

The economy has added an average of 211,000 new jobs in the past three months, a marked acceleration from last fall and summer.

The unemployment rate edged up to 3.6% from a 50-year low of 3.5% as more people entered the labor force in search of work. The rate tends to rise if not all the new entrants find jobs right away, but it’s considered a sign of a strong labor market. An ultra-tight labor market has put more upward pressure on wages, though paychecks are still not growing as fast as they usually do when unemployment is so low. The increase in worker pay over the past 12 months rose slightly to 3.1%, but it sits below the postrecession peak of 3.5%.

Before the employment report, premarket trading pointed to a lower opening for the stock market. The increase in new jobs easily surpassed the 164,000 forecast of economists surveyed by MarketWatch. The construction industry, buoyed by lower mortgage rates and greater demand for new housing, led the way by adding 44,000 jobs. Health-care providers and hotels and restaurants both created 36,000 new jobs. Transportation companies added 28,000 workers, mostly package deliverers and warehouse stockers. And professional businesses hired 21,000 people. Employment in manufacturing, however, fell for the third time in the past four months. The industry shed 12,000 jobs as it struggles to recover from the trade war with China that dented exports in 2019.

Executives were hoping to see improvement in 2020 after the U.S. and China signed an interim trade deal, but the coronavirus has thrown a kink in those plans. The amount of money the average worker earns, meanwhile, rose by 7 cents to $28.44 an hour.

In an expected change, the government reduced its estimate of how many new jobs were created in 2019. Employment gains were revised down to 2.09 million from an original 2.11 million.

Why Is This Russian Satellite Stalking a U.S. Spy Satellite in Orbit?

Kosmos 2542, a Russian inspector satellite, synchronized its orbit with a U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) satellite called USA 245, and is now trailing the classified satellite from a distance of about 186 miles, MIT Technology Review reports.

Michael Thompson, a graduate student in astrophysics at Purdue University, first raised the alarm about the set of maneuvers on Twitter. Experts believe the Russian satellite may be collecting intel about the U.S. spy satellite.

Prior to the repositioning, the two satellites were in the same plane, but had different orbital periods, meaning they orbited the Earth at the same altitude (in low Earth orbit, between 171 and 630 miles above Earth’s surface), but they only passed each other periodically, maybe every 11 to 12 days, according to Thompson.

Then, on January 20, the Russian satellite used its onboard thrusters to perform the first of four maneuvers the rest occurred over the next three days to position itself closer to USA 245. Raising even more suspicion, the two satellites are farthest away from each other in Earth’s shadow and at their closest when in the sunlight prime conditions for surveillance.

"Things do move around in low Earth orbit, but to expend your valuable propellant in this way to perfectly position yourself to view another satellite like this to me is just beyond the pale,". Thomas Roberts, who was an aerospace security fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told MIT Technology Review. "It’s not a coincidence."

Kosmos 2542 launched from Russia’s Plesetsk Cosmodrome in November 2019, while USA 245 has been in orbit since the NRO launched it in August 2013. Russia maintained at the time of Kosmos 2542’s launch that it would only monitor its own satellites, as part of a satellite inspection program.

Devin Nunes: 'We were ready' to bring in witnesses to show Marie Yovanovitch was anti-Trump

Marie Yovanovitch was fortunate that House Republicans could not bring in additional witnesses to prove her hatred for President Trump, according to Rep. Devin Nunes. The House Intelligence Committee ranking member remarked on the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine during an interview on Fox News one day after Trump was acquitted on two Ukraine-related articles of impeachment. “There's a reason why she got fired,” the California Republican said Thursday evening. “This is one of the things we could never really get out because we couldn't bring in witnesses, but you know, we had people that we were ready to bring in that said that she was anti-Trump, espousing anti-Trump administration views while she was Ambassador to Ukraine. That’s her boss.” Nunes added, “She's lucky we couldn't bring any actual witnesses in because there are people that wanted to testify against her.”

Yovanovitch was U.S. ambassador to Ukraine before Trump had her recalled from the post in May 2019, and she has since retired from the foreign service. She had become the target of Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani and others who accused her of being a political enemy of the White House. During impeachment proceedings in the House, Yovanovitch testified that a superior told her that she had done nothing wrong but that Trump had lost faith in her. She also condemned the “smear campaign” against her, saying allegations that she put together a “do not prosecute” list were a “fabrication” and denying claims that she had told anyone at the embassy or in Ukraine that Trump’s orders should be ignored.

On Thursday, Yovanovitch had an opinion piece published describing the “turbulent times” she faced at the end of her career in the State Department. She referred to Trump as an “individual transgressor” from whom America’s diplomatic institutions need protection, adding that “we must not allow the United States to become a country where standing up to our government is a dangerous act.”

As Nunes mentioned, Republicans did not have the votes to bring forward witnesses who could contradict her impeachment testimony because they are not in the majority in the House. “We don’t have subpoena power. So if they don’t give us witnesses, that’s the whole — I mean we talked about this last time,” Nunes said, adding, “We’ve got to win back the majority.” Senate Democrats felt similarly disenfranchised by being in the minority. They tried to force the Senate to hear from additional impeachment witnesses during the trial but failed to earn enough support from Republicans to make that happen. Trump was acquitted on the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress on Wednesday.

FBI says China ‘biggest threat’ to US law enforcement as arrests skyrocket in 2020

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has already arrested nearly 80 percent of the total number of arrests it made in China-related cases this year as it did in all of 2019, officials said Thursday, identifying the Asian superpower as the biggest law enforcement threat to the U.S.

FBI counterintelligence chief John Brown told a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington that the bureau had already arrested 19 people in cases in which the Chinese government was involved in the first 37 days of 2020, compared to 24 in all of last year and 15 five years earlier.

“We believe that no country poses a greater threat than Communist China,” Brown said.

“Today investigations related to China make up a greater percentage of our counterintelligence workload than at any other time in the FBI’s history.”

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is leaving his post at the National Security Council, Fox News confirmed Friday.

The timeline of Vindman’s departure is unclear. Vindman was apparently planning to leave his post at the end of the month, but his exit could come sooner.

Five Killed in Alaska Commuter Air Crash

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—Five people were killed on Thursday when a commuter aircraft crashed in rural southwestern Alaska, killing all aboard, officials said.

The plane, a Piper PA32, crashed “under unknown circumstances,” Allen Kenitzer, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said in an email.

The crash happened near the Yup’ik village of Tuntutuliak, a community about 430 miles southwest of Anchorage, the Alaska State Troopers said in a statement.

The plane was operated by Yute Air, a carrier based in Bethel, Alaska, the hub community in the remote region, the troopers said.

The plane, with a pilot and four passengers, was traveling from Bethel to another Yup’ik village, Kipnuk, on the Bering Sea coast.

Cruise ship returning to Taiwan after Japan denies entry

Taiwan authorities confirmed Friday that a cruise ship currently off the coast of Naha in Okinawa Prefecture that was not allowed to dock by Japanese authorities amid the coronavirus outbreak will be allowed to return to Keelung in the north, according to local media. The approval comes a day after a ban went into effect on all cruise ships from calling in Taiwan ports, following a mass outbreak on another cruise ship currently quarantined in Yokohama, near Tokyo.

Speaking to reporters at the Central Epidemic Center Friday morning, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung indicated that special accommodations were made for the vessel because approximately 90 percent of the guests are from Taiwan.

However, all guests and crew will be required to undergo thorough health screening upon arrival, he said.

"Even if there is only one person who tests positive for the coronavirus, the infected person will be taken off the ship for medical treatment and the rest will be quarantined on the ship for at least 14 days," Chen said.

Among the more than 1,709 passengers aboard the Super Star Aquarius, some appear to have recently traveled to China, according to reports.

Central News Agency reported that the ship left Keelung on Tuesday for a four-day round-trip cruise. It was scheduled to make a port call in Naha on Wednesday and Thursday and arrive back at Keelung Friday afternoon.

However, the ship was turned away by Japan over concerns about the illness, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The ship is now scheduled to arrive back in Keelung on Saturday, the report said.

The three-judge panel - Judges Karen Henderson, David Tatel and Thomas Griffith - was in unanimous agreement, saying the Democratic lawmakers lack the standing to challenge the President, the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled.

The Democrats' "claim is based entirely on the loss of political power," the appellate panel wrote in the opinion.
