The unbridled seeking of ‘proof’ as the first step of the scientific method, complimented by declaration of a subject to be a pseudoscience, in absence of having applied the scientific method in order to derive that conclusion, constitutes in itself, pseudoscience.

‘Wrong’ without science, is an opinion. Science is a method.

Pseudoscience is an errant methodology on the other hand where one assumes that there is not a need for process and that the prevailing theory is “Proven until another theory is proven” Pseudoscience (Graphic 3) is any process which skips major steps in the scientific method in an attempt to shore up a “proven” or popular or pat answer construct – without having to actually do the work and adhere to the discipline.

Philippines reports 1st virus death outside of China

BEIJING (AP) - The first death outside China from the new coronavirus was recorded Sunday in the Philippines, as countries around the world evacuated hundreds of their citizens from the infection zone and Chinese authorities completed a new, rapidly constructed 1,000-bed hospital for victims of the outbreak.

Chinese authorities also delayed the reopening of schools in the hardest-hit province and tightened the quarantine in one city by allowing only one family member to venture out to buy supplies. The Philippine Health Department said a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan, the city at the center of the crisis, was hospitalized Jan. 25 with a fever, cough and sore throat and died after developing severe pneumonia. The man's 38-year-old female companion, also from Wuhan, tested positive for the virus as well and remained hospitalized in isolation in Manila.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte approved a ban on the entry of all non-citizens from China. The U.S., Japan, Singapore and Australia have imposed similar restrictions despite criticism from China and an assessment from the World Health Organization that such measures were unnecessarily hurting trade and travel.

The death toll in China climbed by 45 to 304, and the number of cases worldwide surged past 14,550, according to China's National Health Commission and other nations. The vast majority of those infected are in China; about 150 cases have been reported in two dozen other countries. The U.S. has recorded eight cases. A hospital specially built to handle coronavirus patients in Wuhan is expected to open on Monday, just 10 days after construction began. A second hospital is set to open soon after.

Also, six officials in the city of Huanggang, next to Wuhan in Hubei province, were fired over "poor performance" in handling the outbreak, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. It cited the mayor as saying the city's "capabilities to treat the patients remained inadequate and there is a severe shortage in medical supplies such as protective suits and medical masks."

The trading and manufacturing center of Wenzhou, with nearly 10 million people in coastal Zhejiang province, confined people to their homes, allowing only one family member to venture out every other day to buy necessary supplies. Huanggang, home to 7 million people, imposed similar measures on Saturday.

China Censors Top Local Media Outlet Over Claims Beijing Is Underreporting Cases, Deaths

Let's be honest, do you think China is reporting the actual coronavirus cases and deaths? After all, Beijing has been the master of falsifying its economic growth figures for years, what makes you think they'll change in the reporting of the deadly virus outbreak?

Balaji S. Srinivasan, angel investor and entrepreneur, also former CTO of Coinbase, tweeted Saturday that a top news organization in China, Caijing, had one of their articles banned by Beijing after it noted Chinese officials were significantly underreporting coronavirus confirmed cases and deaths, especially among the elderly.

Srinivasan said, "If half the claims in this article are true, #nCoV2019 seems to have completely overloaded Wuhan's healthcare system. It appears particularly deadly for the elderly. But this 45-year-old had to be anesthetized and intubated in order to breathe."

"In the past two days, he had seen a 45-year-old patient, a family of five, his parents had died of the new coronavirus pneumonia, and his son was infected. The patient's condition was very serious. She used high-flow oxygen inhalation and non-invasive mask ventilation, but her blood oxygen saturation was only 50%. Finally, she had to be anesthetized and intubated with ECMO.

"Before intubation and anesthesia, she watched us prepare, tears kept flowing down, and that fear made people feel very distressed," said Shen Jun. There are still many cases like this, "Our doctors have made a decision Determined to do everything possible to treat all patients," Caijing wrote.

Srinivasan points out that the Chinese newspaper found hospitals in Wuhan and elsewhere were intentionally recording coronavirus deaths as "general pneumonia" to keep the death count low.

Oman offered to mediate direct negotiations between Israel and Iran in an initiative that Israel’s Mossad chief thought was worth serious consideration, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea, Israeli television reported on Sunday night. Israelis familiar with the initiative believe Iran was ready to cooperate, the report said.

Citing four senior Israeli officials who were involved in the issue, Channel 13’s diplomatic correspondent, Barak Ravid, said Oman offered to broker the contacts between the two enemy countries weeks after Hassan Rouhani won elections to succeed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iranian president in early summer 2013.

With the US under president Barack Obama already secretly negotiating with Iran, in an initiative that also began in Oman and that ultimately yielded the controversial 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), the leadership of that Gulf state suggested to Israel that its interests would be well-served by having its own dialogue with Tehran, the report said, while warning that the absence of such a dialogue “could lead to war.”

Then Mossad chief Tamir Pardo thought the idea was “serious and worth considering,” and brought it to Netanyahu’s attention.

The initiative was discussed in a meeting including Netanyahu, Pardo, and Netanyahu’s then national security adviser Yaakov Amidror, the report said. And Netanyahu decided to reject it.

“If that was the response,” said Amidror carefully, “it was justified.”

But a quick perusal of Trejo’s screenshots reveals just that taking place on the Twitter platform, as child-attracted sexual perverts talk about the difficulties of adult-sized genitalia meshing with child-sized bodies.

It’s difficult to even type that last sentence, but it’s important for the world to know that Twitter sees nothing wrong with this type of vile and utterly evil sexualization of children, even as it prohibits its users from spreading vaccine “misinformation” because of the “harm” it’s supposedly causing to society.

We won’t get into any more of the ugly details about what they contain here in this article, but Infowars has published the screenshots Trejo captured if for some reason you want to see them. Suffice it to say that pedophilia is now accepted at Twitter, while conservative speech is not.

Did the 1991 Sikorsky S76B helicopter (tail number N72EX) have a GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM?

We don't know. Even though we have learned that the Helicopter did not have an enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) (which depends on GPS), it is still possible that a GPS was part of the Helicopter's avionics or that the pilot had a portable hand held GPS navigation device.

Interestingly, I found an older 1989 Sikorsky S76B for sale online that comes with a flight recorder and an enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS), so it seems unusual to me that a newer model once used to fly the Governor of Illinois did not have these features installed.

American Airlines Inc said Sunday it encouraged U.S.-bound passengers “to arrive at the airport three hours early as we expect this additional screening will lengthen the normal check-in process.” The United States said Friday that for flights departing after 5 p.m. EST Sunday, it will bar entry to nearly all foreign visitors who have been in China within the last two weeks.

The Trump administration is limiting flights from China and for Americans who have visited China within the last 14 days to eight major U.S. airports for enhanced screening: New York’s JFK, Chicago’s O’Hare, San Francisco, Seattle-Tacoma, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Dulles in Washington, DC. Three more airports - Newark, Dallas/Fort Worth and Detroit - would be added on Monday, DHS announced on Sunday.

The new rules do not impact cargo-only flights, DHS said.

American Airlines temporarily halted all flights to mainland China on Friday, while Delta Air Lines said Sunday its last flight had departed China before it planned resumption of flights in May. United Airlines is scheduled to continue China flights through Wednesday before halting flights through March 27.

Many other nations are imposing similar restrictions.

Airlines must ensure foreign visitors arriving in the United States have not visited China within the last two weeks and Americans who traveled within the last 14 days to China are flying to one of the seven designated airports. Airlines said they are working to ease the burden on gate agents by also including questions about China travel online and at check-in lobbies, and adding new signs.

A spokeswoman for a group representing U.S. airlines said Sunday “carriers will continue to comply with all government rules and regulations.” DHS warned that “travelers without a nexus to China” may also be routed through one of the screening airports if it is discovered mid-flight that someone else on their flight has been in China in the last 14 days.

Americans who have been in Hubei, China province within 14 days of their return will be subject to up to 14 days of mandatory quarantine. U.S. citizens who have been in other areas of mainland China within the last 14 days “will undergo proactive entry health screening and up to 14 days of self-quarantine,” DHS said. For Americans who recently traveled to China - but outside Hubei - if they show no symptoms after a screening “they will be re-booked to their destination and asked to ‘self-quarantine’ at their homes.”

DHS said Sunday none of restrictions impact flights or visitors from Hong Kong or Macau.

The Primary Mechanism Of Your Oppression Is Not Hidden At All

I write a lot about government secrecy and the importance of whistleblowers, leakers and leak publishers, and for good reason: governments which can hide their wicked deeds from public accountability will do so whenever possible. It’s impossible for the public to use democracy for ensuring their government behaves in the way they desire if they aren’t allowed to be informed about what that behavior even is.

These things get lots of attention in conspiracy circles and dissident political factions. Quite a few eyes are fixed on the veil of government opacity and the persecution of those brave souls who try to shed light on what’s going on behind it. Not enough eyes, but quite a few.

What gets less attention, much to our detriment, is the fact that the primary mechanism of our oppression and exploitation is happening right out in front of our faces.

The nonstop campaign by bought politicians, owned news outlets, and manipulated social media platforms to control the dominant narratives about what’s going on in the world contribute vastly more to the sickness of our society than government secrecy does. We know this from experience: any time a whistleblower exposes secret information about the malfeasance of powerful governments like NSA surveillance or Collateral Murder, we see not public accountability, nor demands for sweeping systemic changes to prevent such malfeasance from reoccurring, but a bunch of narrative management from the political/media class.

This narrative management is used to shift attention away from the information that was revealed and onto the fact that the person who revealed it broke the law or misbehaved in some way. It’s used to convince people that the revelations aren’t actually a big deal, or that it was already basically public knowledge anyway. And it’s used to manipulate public attention on to the next hot story of the day and memory hole it underneath the white noise of the media news churn. And nothing changes.

We’ve seen it happening over and over and over again. The narrative management machine has gotten so effective and efficient that it’s been able to completely ignore the recent revelation that the US, UK and France almost certainly bombed Syria in 2018 for a completely false reason. A few half-assed Bellingcat spin jobs and an otherwise total media blackout, and it’s like the whole thing never happened.

What this tells us is that our first and foremost problem is not the fact that conspiracies are happening behind a curtain of government secrecy, but that the way people think, act and vote is being actively manipulated right out in the open. Government secrecy is indeed one aspect of establishment narrative control, but controlling the public’s access to information is only one aspect. The bigger part of it is controlling how the public thinks about information.

The reason people never use the power of their superior numbers to force real change, even though they’re being exploited and oppressed in myriad ways by the ruling class, is because they’ve been propagandized into accepting the status quo as desirable (or at least normal). The propaganda of the political/media class is therefore the establishment’s front line of defense. Its most powerful, and essential, weapon.

Thief Breaks Into John Solomon’s Car Night Before Impeachment Trial, Steals Laptop Containing Explosive Information on Ukraine and Joe Biden

Someone broke into investigative reporter John Solomon’s car parked near the White House the night before the senate impeachment trial began.

The thief stole John Solomon’s laptop which contained sensitive information on former Vice President Joe Biden and Ukraine.

The break-in, which happened across from the White House’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building, was described as a “professional job” and authorities believe the individual(s) used a sophisticated electronic jamming device to open the car’s lock.

“It’s a pretty professional job,” John Solomon told RCI of the break-in, “but it’s probably just a coincidence.”

“It was probably just a street criminal searching for pass codes,” he added. “Or it could be someone searching for my Ukraine stuff, we don’t know at this point.”

It appears to be a targeted political hit because Solomon said nothing else was taken from his car, including cash.

Though the laptop has since been recovered, the investigation is still open. “The case has been assigned a detective and is under investigation,” MPD spokesman Sean Hickman told RCI

The Secret Service is also involved in the matter, which appears suspicious. Break-ins are rare in the high-security area where the crime occurred, just outside the White House perimeter, and a sophisticated device appears to have been used to get into the vehicle.

The computer and bag, which also contained his U.S. Capitol press security badge, were discovered the next day nearly a block away from where his car had been parked. The contents of the bag had been dumped out on a picnic bench near the FDIC building. The location had no security cameras, so there is no known video surveillance footage that can be reviewed. Authorities described it as one of the few “dark spots” in the area.

Award-winning investigative reporter John Solomon has been targeted by Dem Rep. Adam Schiff for his explosive reporting on Ukraine and the Biden crime family.

In December, Schiff (illegally) obtained John Solomon’s phone records and published his call history in a report.

Schiff smeared Solomon as a reporter who published “conspiracy theories” to “push false narratives” about Ukraine’s interference in the 2016 election to help Hillary Clinton.

John Solomon said he is working with computer forensics to see whether his hard drive was scanned by the thief.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday pressed Kazakhstan to be wary of Chinese investment and influence, urging the Central Asian nation and others to join calls demanding an end to China’s repression of minorities.

Bringing a message similar to the one he has delivered repeatedly to other countries, Pompeo told Kazakhstani officials that the attractiveness of Chinese investment comes with a cost to sovereignty and may hurt, instead of help, the country’s long-term development.

“We fully support Kazakhstan’s freedom to choose to do business with whichever country it wants, but I am confident that countries get the best outcomes when they partner with American companies,” he said at the press conference. “You get fair deals. You get job creation. You get transparency in contracts. You get companies that care about the environment, and you get an unsurpassed commitment to quality work.”

Pompeo also urged Kazakhstani officials to continue reforms that would allow greater U.S. investment and said the two nations were discussing the possibility of opening direct passenger flights between the countries.

Pompeo also discussed economic and security cooperation with his Kazakhstani counterpart Minister of Foreign Affairs Mukhtar Tileuberdi. The United States is currently one of the biggest investors in Kazakhstan, comprising “18.5 percent of [its] total foreign direct investment.”

Tileuberdi and Pompeo talked at a joint press conference, about the contract that American agricultural giant Tyson Foods signed in December with the Republic of Kazakhstan and private holding multinational company Kusto Group also operating in Kazakhstan, on cooperation leading to a construction of a modern beef processing plant and “an entire ecosystem “for developing livestock production in Kazakhstan.

Also, Chevron and ExxonMobil will continue to invest in the Kazakh oil and gas sector, contributing to the development of the county’s oil fields and job creation.

There is also a potential to expand the cooperation between two countries in the information technology and scientific research, said Tileuberdi.

Pompeo said that Kazakhstan’s reforms aimed to “strengthen the economic prosperity and democracy and increasing public confidence in the government,” which are welcomed by the United States. Pompeo and Tileuberdi emphasized that the “fundamental rule of law” and “basic protections for transparency in contracts” are the key prerequisites necessary to expand the economic cooperation between two countries further and are fundamental for Western companies to do business in Kazakhstan.

“The American risk-taking entrepreneurs will love the hardworking, capable, talented people here in Kazakhstan to be part of their teams, and we will do good things for American business and for the people of Kazakhstan when we get all of these opportunities brought to fruition,” Pompeo said.

Fighting International Terrorism Together

Both countries also cooperate in fighting international terrorism. China Bloodbath: Stocks Crash; Oil, Iron Limit Down Despite Emergency PBOC Intervention, Rate Cuts

China's reopening from the long Lunar New Year holiday was set to be ugly, and sure enough with Chinese stocks resuming trade at 9am on Monday, a wave of selling was unleashed culminating in nothing short of a bloodbath with the Shanghai Composite crashing 9% at the open, down by the most since the bursting of China's 2015 stock bubble, and wiping out 12 months worth of gains in a corona moment. Not even the hilarious beat in China's Manufacturing PMI (this time from Caixin), which somehow surpased expectations of a 51.0 print by the smallest amount possible at 51.1 (down from 51.5) despite a major portion of China's population under quarantine and the economy hitting a brick wall, had any impact on stocks. What is odd is that this is happening even as China earlier in the day barred short selling, which only means the central bank made a huge oversight and should have also banned all selling altogether.

As stocks collapse the flight to safety is predictably on with 10Y Chinese bond tumbling in yield to 3%, matching the lowest yield since late 2016..... while spiking in price.

The selloff wasn't limited just to stocks, however, with China’s benchmark iron ore contract falling by its daily limit of 8%, with copper, crude and palm oil also plunging by the maximum allowed. As Bloomberg notes, regions accounting for about 90% of copper smelting, 60% of steel production, 65% of oil refining and 40% of coal output have told firms to delay restarting operations until at least Feb. 10.

This is bad news for anyone still holding on to dreams of a Chinese economic renaissance, as the following correlation between China's macro surprise index and copper demonstrates. China's bloodbath is taking place even as the PBOC scrambled earlier in the day to inject a gross 1.2 trillion in liquidity which however as we explained, was woefully inadequate because when netting off the 1 trillion in short-term reverse repo funds scheduled to mature on Monday, the liquidity injection amounted to a far more modest 150BN yuan, or just over $27BN.

The lack of any notable impact from China's reverse repo injection probably explains why shortly after the catastrophic open, the PBOC also cut rates on both its 7 day and 14 day-reverse repo from 2.5% to 2.4%, and from 2.65% to 2.55% respectively. Any additional selling will only beget even more selling, which is certainly on the mind of whoever is buying US futs even as China is crashing.

India's economy is rapidly decelerating and could be headed for a financial crisis.

As an emergency response to plunging growth rates and falling energy consumption, along with a manufacturing hub grinding to a halt, the government has just announced a massive $40 billion fiscal injection in its budget for 2020/21 to prevent a hard landing, reported Reuters.

Emergency fiscal measures by government are typically for an economy that is in a recession or certainly headed towards one.

However, India isn't in a recession, but growth rates are rapidly decelerating and now being referred to as "great slowdown."

"Look at electricity generation growth, it's falling off the bottom, and it's never been like this ever. So this is the sense in which I would say this is not just any slowdown, this is the great slowdown that India is experiencing and we should look at it with all seriousness ...and the economy seems headed for the intensive care unit," former Indian Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian warned last month.

Economic growth in the country is expected to fall under the 5-handle this year, will be the weakest since the global financial crisis in 2008-09.

Massive fire has broken out on the Burhi Dihing river in Assam's Dibrugarh district allegedly due to an oil pipeline blast, authorities say.

Efforts are still on to put the fire out. Local media reports have it that crude oil from an oil refinery located in the state's Dibrugarh district had ended up in a water pipe connected to the river.

Convicted former WorldCom CEO Ebbers dead at 78

Bernard Ebbers, the former WorldCom Inc chief executive convicted in one of the largest U.S. accounting scandals, died on Sunday, his family said in a statement.

Ebbers, 78, a one-time milkman became known as an exacting, cost-obsessed boss, was released from prison in December because of his deteriorating health.

He had served about 13-1/4 years of a 25-year prison term for orchestrating an $11 billion fraud that led to his now-defunct telecommunications company’s 2002 bankruptcy, at the time the largest Chapter 11 case in U.S. history.

In a court filing in September, Ebbers’ lawyers said their client was legally blind, suffered from a heart ailment and anemia, had lost 40 lb (18 kg) in a little over a year, and had become incapable of walking regularly for exercise.

“I know many of the victims of WorldCom opposed Dad’s release. Many also wrote in support of release”, his son, Joy Ebbers Bourne said in the statement. “My family and I continue to pray for everyone affected by the fall of WorldCom.”

WorldCom had filed for bankruptcy in July 2002. It emerged from Chapter 11 in April 2004 as MCI Inc, which was later acquired by Verizon Communications Inc.

The Super Bowl Is a Grift of Epic Proportions

While the wealthy party during Super Bowl week, a heist is happening in plain sight.

The Super Bowl is like prom for the 1 percent. When the big game comes to town, it’s accompanied by private jets, parties, and nonstop bottle service. That should be enough, but it never is. The bacchanalia also comes festooned with public funds for the NFL, an overwhelming police presence, and the removal of the poor. It’s a world of fun on our TVs, but it’s a wrecking ball for local communities. This year the game is in Miami, and the scams are starting to seep into public consciousness. As the Miami Herald is reporting, the NFL booked 1 million dollars’ worth of rooms at the J.W. Marriott Marquis hotel and Aventura’s Turnberry resort for the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers players and coaches—and sent the city the bill. Even though the NFL is a gargantuan corporate operation and both teams are owned by billionaires, Miami (where 27 percent of children live below the poverty line) is on the hook for the hotel accommodations. This is just part of a $4 million welfare package with which the city has gifted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who makes 10 times that amount in yearly salary. That $4 million does not include the costs of the police and security presence required to host the game. Rodney Barreto, the chairman of Miami’s Host Committee, said to the Herald, “These are basically things we have to do to get them to come. If we’re not doing it, another city is.”

The police presence will be “an extraordinary deployment of law enforcement assets, even by recent standards, in keeping with heightened global tensions and fears of home-grown violence.” According to Reuters, Super Bowl LIV “is a so-called SEAR 1 event, affording it the highest level of federal resources, including explosive detection canine teams, cyber risk assessments and air security. Coordinated by the U.S. Secret Service, the security force includes operations by the U.S. Coast Guard, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security.” In addition, Miami police will lead “lead a massive ground operation with thousands of officers… on foot, horseback, in boats, and in the air.” While the police roam the city and public dollars flow into the NFL’s coffers, the league is engaging in Kabuki theater charity: its spoonful of sugar to help the poison go down, showy presentations so it won’t look like a parasite. The league donated $100,000 to a homeless shelter that will house those displaced from Bayfront Park by the Super Bowl. This sounds nice, but the donation will actually help facilitate their removal from the streets so they’re not an eyesore, or worse, a reminder of the human costs of economic inequality. In addition, Dak Prescott, quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, is being praised for donating 100,000 bowls of Campbell’s Chunky Soup (Prescott’s sponsor) to local homeless shelters. This is the synthesis of commercialism and philanthropy that the NFL adores.

Yet there won’t only be police and soup. There will also be protest. Residents of the historic Miami Gardens neighborhood along with the Miami-Dade NAACP will be protesting on game day at the site of the Super Bowl, HardRock Stadium, in a fight to stop Formula 1 racing on public streets. The racing circuit has been invited to Miami Gardens by HardRock Stadium and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. F1 racing has been rejected by numerous communities because of environmental impact and traffic concerns. Ross doesn’t have such concerns about the residents in Miami Gardens, so they will be using the platform of the Super Bowl to fight back. They won’t be alone. While private planes will be incoming in great numbers, airport workers in Miami will be protesting low wages and expensive health insurance costs with a Super Bowl week hunger strike. They are demonstrating against their employer, the airline catering subcontractor Sky Chefs. Sky Chefs works with, among other entities, American Airlines. Their Union, Unite Here, is currently in negotiations with Sky Chefs for a living wage. One worker, Ibis Boggiano, said to the Herald, “We are sacrificing our health so that they will hear us.”

Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120

and Gag

Abstract:

We are currently witnessing a major epidemic caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-

nCoV). The evolution of 2019-nCoV remains elusive. We found 4 insertions in the spike

glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses.

Importantly, amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag. Interestingly, despite the inserts being discontinuous on the primary

amino acid sequence, 3D-modelling of the 2019-nCoV suggests that they converge to constitute

the receptor binding site. The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have

identity /similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be

fortuitous in nature. This work provides yet unknown insights on 2019-nCoV and sheds light on

the evolution and pathogenicity of this virus with important implications for diagnosis of this virus.

Introduction

Coronaviruses (CoV) are single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses that infect animals and

humans. These are classified into 4 genera based on their host specificity: Alphacoronavirus,

Betacoronavirus, Deltacoronavirus and Gammacoronavirus (Snijder et al., 2006). There are seven

known types of CoVs that includes 229E and NL63 (Genus Alphacoronavirus), OC43, HKU1,

MERS and SARS (Genus Betacoronavirus). While 229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1 commonly

infect humans, the SARS and MERS outbreak in 2002 and 2012 respectively occurred when the

virus crossed-over from animals to humans causing significant mortality (J. Chan et al., n.d.; J. F.

W. Chan et al., 2015). In December 2019, another outbreak of coronavirus was reported from

Wuhan, China that also transmitted from animals to humans. This new virus has been temporarily

termed as 2019-novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) by the World Health Organization (WHO) (J. F.-

W. Chan et al., 2020; Zhu et al., 2020). While there are several hypotheses about the origin of

2019-nCoV, the source of this ongoing outbreak remains elusive.

The transmission patterns of 2019-nCoV is similar to patterns of transmission documented in the

previous outbreaks including by bodily or aerosol contact with persons infected with the virus.

Cases of mild to severe illness, and death from the infection have been reported from Wuhan. This

outbreak has spread rapidly distant nations including France, Australia and USA among others.

The number of cases within and outside China are increasing steeply. Our current understanding

is limited to the virus genome sequences and modest epidemiological and clinical data.

Comprehensive analysis of the available 2019- nCoV sequences may provide important clues that

may help advance our current understanding to manage the ongoing outbreak.

The spike glycoprotein (S) of cornonavirus is cleaved into two subunits (S1 and S2). The S1

subunit helps in receptor binding and the S2 subunit facilitates membrane fusion (Bosch et al.,

2003; Li, 2016). The spike glycoproteins of coronoviruses are important determinants of tissue

tropism and host range. In addition the spike glycoproteins are critical targets for vaccine

development (Du et al., 2013). For this reason, the spike proteins represent the most extensively

studied among coronaviruses. We therefore sought to investigate the spike glycoprotein of the

2019-nCoV to understand its evolution, novel features sequence and structural features using

computational tools.

Oh that. It turns out that they were wrong and that those segments are found in many other organisms. Other researched pointed out that those segments DO exist in other coronavirues. They've since retracted the paper.

Statement about nCoV and our pandemic exercise

In October 2019, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security hosted a pandemic tabletop exercise called Event 201 with partners, the World Economic Forum and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Recently, the Center for Health Security has received questions about whether that pandemic exercise predicted the current novel coronavirus outbreak in China. To be clear, the Center for Health Security and partners did not make a prediction during our tabletop exercise. For the scenario, we modeled a fictional coronavirus pandemic, but we explicitly stated that it was not a prediction. Instead, the exercise served to highlight preparedness and response challenges that would likely arise in a very severe pandemic. We are not now predicting that the nCoV-2019 outbreak will kill 65 million people. Although our tabletop exercise included a mock novel coronavirus, the inputs we used for modeling the potential impact of that fictional virus are not similar to nCoV-2019.

As many as 20 civilians have been killed in an overnight attack in north-western Burkina Faso.

Unidentified heavily armed men on motorbikes carried out the attack in Lamdamol village in Seno province, north of the capital Ouagadougou, on Saturday night, AFP news agency says.

The attack comes a week after 39 people were killed when militants attacked a market in the province of Soum.

The Sahel region has seen an increase in jihadist violence in recent months.

News of Saturday's attack came as France announced it would send a further 600 soldiers to the Sahel region, bringing the total number of French troops to more than 5,000.

The United States [1] Navy has deployed two MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft to the US island territory of Guam, the first time the drones have been positioned in the Pacific, in a bid to step up Washington’s surveillance capabilities in the region.

The two Tritons are part of Unmanned Patrol Squadron (VUP) 19 and will be joined by two more drones in the coming weeks, the US Navy said.

“The inaugural deployment of [the Tritons] brings enhanced capabilities and a broad increase in maritime domain awareness to our forward fleet commanders,” said Rear Admiral Peter Garvin, commander of the Navy’s Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, in a statement. “VUP19, the Navy’s first dedicated [unmanned aircraft systems] squadron … is superbly trained and ready to provide the persistent [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance] coverage the Navy needs.”

The Tritons, which will be operated from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, can remain airborne for more than 24 hours and have an operational ceiling of 16km and a range of more than 13,000km.

The vehicle’s range and endurance mean a Triton is able to monitor a vast swathe of the Western Pacific, including the region’s busy shipping lanes. Beijing and Pyongyang are some 4,000km and 3,400km from Guam respectively.

Iranian National Charged with Bank Fraud and Lying to Federal Agents in Connection with a Scheme to Use the U.S. Financial System to Send More Than $115 Million to Iranian Individuals and Entities

The Department of Justice announced that Bahram Karimi was charged with conspiring to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements in connection with his involvement in a joint project initiated by the Governments of Iran and Venezuela in which more than $115 million was illegally funneled through the U.S. financial system for the benefit of various Iranian individuals and entities. The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan.

“Karimi allegedly conspired in an infrastructure project initiated by the Governments of Iran and Venezuela,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers. “He then lied to banks about Iranian involvement and took advantage of the U.S. financial system to benefit Iranian parties. The Department of Justice will continue to prosecute those who misuse our financial system in violation of U.S. sanctions.”

“As alleged, Bahram Karimi knowingly and willfully facilitated the circumventing of sanctions against Iran, and then lied about it to FBI agents,” said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman for the Southern District of New York. “Karimi allegedly enabled the concealed transfer through U.S. banks of more than $100 million from a Venezuelan state-owned company to an Iranian construction firm, and when questioned, told the agents he didn’t know that was prohibited by the sanctions.”

“At the end of the day, these charges reflect the use of our financial system to generate U.S. dollars for Iranians and Iranian entities. That’s why our government has robust sanctions in place against Iran and Iranian entities who seek to use the U.S. banking system for their own benefit,” said Assistant Director-in-Charge William F. Sweeney, Jr of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

As alleged in the Superseding Indictment and statements made in court filings and proceedings:

In August 2004, the Governments of Iran and Venezuela entered into a Cooperation Framework Agreement, whereby they agreed to cooperate in certain areas of common interest. The following year, both governments supplemented the Cooperation Framework Agreement by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding regarding an infrastructure project in Venezuela (the “Project”), which was to involve the construction of thousands of housing units in Venezuela.

The Project was led by Stratus Group, an Iranian conglomerate with international business operations in the construction, banking, and oil industries. In December 2006, Stratus Group incorporated a company in Tehran, which was then known as the Iranian International Housing Corporation (IIHC). IIHC was responsible for construction for the Project. Thereafter, IIHC entered into a contract with a subsidiary of a Venezuelan state-owned energy company (the VE Company), which called for IIHC to build approximately 7,000 housing units in Venezuela in exchange for approximately $475,734,000. Stratus Group created the Venezuela Project Executive Committee to oversee the execution of the Project. Karimi was a member of the committee and was responsible for managing the Project in Venezuela.

In connection with his role on the Project, Karimi worked with others to defraud U.S. banks by concealing the role of Iranian parties in U.S. dollar payments sent through the U.S. banking system. Specifically, between April 2011 and November 2013, the VE Company made approximately 15 payments to IIHC through two front companies, which were created to conceal the Iranian nexus to the payments, in violation of U.S. economic sanctions. These 15 payments totaled approximately $115 million.

In January 2020, Karimi was interviewed by, among other people, two FBI agents. During that interview, Karimi falsely stated that, during the course of the Project, he believed that international sanctions against Iran did not apply to Iranian companies or persons.

Karimi, 53, of Canada, is charged with (1) conspiring to commit bank fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison; (2) bank fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison; and (3) making false statements, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. The maximum potential sentences in this case are prescribed by Congress and are provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the judge.

Mr. Demers and Mr. Berman praised the outstanding investigative efforts of the New York County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI. Mr. Berman also thanked the New York County District Attorney’s Office for their ongoing assistance in this investigation.

The European Union and Britain clashed over a post-Brexit trade deal on Monday with Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisting he need not sign up to the bloc’s rules and Brussels warning of tariffs and quotas unless he did.

Britain wants to negotiate a trade deal by the end of 2020, though EU leaders say the further Britain diverges from their rules the less access it will have to the EU market.

Speaking just over two days since Brexit, Johnson cast Britain as the “supercharged” superman of free trade, and while it would not seek to undermine the bloc with a race to the bottom, he said there was no need to accept EU rules.

“There is no need for a free trade agreement to involve accepting EU rules on competition policy, subsidies, social protection, the environment or anything similar, any more than the EU should be obliged to accept UK rules,” Johnson said.

SOUTH BEND — A conservative Washington-based group has sued the Mayor Pete Buttigieg administration and South Bend Common Council, alleging the city has violated Indiana’s public records law by refusing to disclose staff emails related to a program that provides identification cards to undocumented immigrants.

The suit, filed this week in St. Joseph Circuit Court by Judicial Watch, details four denied records requests that the organization filed with the city. The requests sought emails exchanged between various city officials and La Casa de Amistad, the nonprofit Latino advocacy group that issues the cards.

La Casa in December 2016 began issuing the community resident card, branded as “SB ID,” to undocumented immigrants to help them conduct routine daily activities, such as picking up children from school or day care, providing identification to police, obtaining college transcripts, library cards and prescriptions, and clearing background checks needed to volunteer at schools.

More than two years later, 2,153 people have the South Bend card, and 1,035 people carry a Goshen ID card, also issued by La Casa, said Sam Centellas, La Casa’s executive director.

“One of the good telltale signs that the program has worked well is that people are renewing their cards.” Centellas said, “and that’s when we get to hear these impact stories about how they’ve been able to feel like a more connected part of the city by having this ID.”

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of the dangers posed by “the spread of rumors and misinformation,” according to Agence France-Presses. “We have worked with Google to make sure people searching for information about coronavirus see WHO information at the top of their search results,” Tedros said in opening remarks to the UN health agency’s Executive Board meeting in Geneva. “Social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Tencent and Tiktok have also taken steps to limit the spread of misinformation,” he said. The WHO chief’s comments were interrupted by a fit of coughing, but he assured the assembly that there was no need to worry. “It is not corona,” he said.

A leaked recording of an exchange between an Iranian air-traffic controller and an Iranian pilot purports to show that authorities immediately knew a missile had downed a Ukrainian jetliner after takeoff from Tehran, killing all 176 people aboard, despite days of denials by the Islamic Republic.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged the recording’s authenticity in a report aired by a Ukrainian television channel on Sunday night.

In Tehran on Monday, the head of the Iranian investigation team, Hassan Rezaeifar, acknowledged the recording was legitimate and said that it was handed over to Ukrainian officials.

Jill Biden said Monday that her family “used to be great friends” with Senator Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), but that things had “changed” after Graham’s comments about the Biden family’s dealings in Ukraine amid President Trump’s impeachment.

Jill Biden, appearing on CNN’s New Day ahead of the Iowa caucuses, interjected after being asked a question about Graham, “whom I think you count as a friend,” John Berman added.

“We did, yes,” she said, before elaborating.

“I don’t know what happened to Lindsey. And we used to be great friends and friends with John McCain,” she added. “I mean we traveled together with the Foreign Relations Committee. We’ve had dinner. You know, and now he’s changed.”

Jill Biden added that “it’s hard” to still consider Graham a friend after his “hurtful” comments in regard to Joe and Hunter Biden’s dealings in Ukraine.

“It’s hard when you, I don’t know, consider somebody a friend and then they’ve said so many things, so many negative things,” she stated.

"We used to be great friends… And now he's changed," says Jill Biden, wife of Joe Biden, about Sen. Lindsey Graham's stance on the impeachment trial. "It's hard when you consider somebody a friend and they've said so many negative things. That's been a little hurtful."

Graham, in his role as Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, opened a probe in November into allegations that Biden used his position as the Obama White House point man for Ukraine policy to push for the firing of a government prosecutor in order to shield Burisma from investigation. While the prosecutor, Victor Shokin, was widely considered to be corrupt, President Trump and a number of Republicans have speculated that Biden pushed for his firing to protect his son Hunter, who sat on Burisma’s board at the time.

“I’m doing this because somebody needs to do it,” Graham told host Brian Kilmeade on Fox News Radio when asked about the investigation he is conducting. “We’re not going to allow a system in America where only one side gets looked at.”

Biden told CNN that he was “embarrassed” by Graham’s actions, but the South Carolina Republican defended the move.

“My friendship with Joe Biden — if it can’t withstand me doing my job, then it’s not the friendship I thought,” Graham told Kilmeade.

Ahead of the vote for additional witnesses and documents in President Trump’s impeachment trial, Graham told reporters on January 24 that “I don’t want to call Hunter Biden. I don’t want to call Joe Biden.”

“I want someone to look at this when this is done,” Graham said. Days later, Graham changed his tune after it appeared that witnesses were likely to be called.

Warring Libya sides sit down for Geneva talks agreed in Berlin

The two major warring parties in the Libyan civil war have for the first time sat down for commission-level talks in Geneva. The meeting was agreed at the Libya summit in Berlin, after a peace process started by Russia and Turkey.

Officials from the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) and Libya’s National Army (LNA), which is led by General Khalifa Haftar, have gathered in Geneva for the first session of the Libyan Joint Military Commission. The talks are UN-brokered and are moderated by the UN Special Representative Ghassan Salamé. Each side sent five of its officers to the meeting.

The commission was agreed as part of a deal reached in Berlin during a summit attended by Haftar, as well as the GNA Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, alongside the leaders of France, Germany, Russia, Turkey, UK, and the US Secretary of State. The commission’s first session is seen as a step forward in the Libyan conflict resolution, since the two sides previously repeatedly refused to engage in direct talks.

The commission is primarily tasked with maintaining the ceasefire between the GNA and the LNA and with resolving any issues that arise. The two sides that have been in a state of war for years joined the truce upon the initiative of Russia and Turkey ahead of another summit in Moscow that laid the groundwork for the Berlin meeting.

Libya was plunged into chaos after the 2011 NATO-backed "revolution" overthrew and killed the long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi. The country remained splintered between warring militant faction for years, until the GNA and the LNA emerged as the two leading claimants to governing Libya. In effect, however, Haftar's forces and allies now control most of the country, while the Tripoli-based government of PM Fayez al-Sarraj has found itself besieged in the capital city Tripoli.

Senate To Call 'Whistleblower' As Part Of Three-Pronged Investigation Into Impeachment Origins

Senate Republicans are gearing up for a three-pronged investigation into the origins of Congressional Democrats' impeachment of President Trump, according to the Washington Examiner.

"I want to understand how all this crap started," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Fox News's Sunday Morning Futures, who added that the Senate would begin their investigations "within weeks."

"The Senate Intel Committee under Richard Burr has told us that they will call the whistleblower," said Graham.

Whether it's a legitimate search for the truth or a convenient way to assuage frustrated Republicans who wanted fireworks during the Senate impeachment trial has yet to be seen.

Let's recall what Senate Republicans plan to unravel;

The Whistelblower, outed by investigative reporter Paul Sperry as Eric Ciaramella, is a registered Democrat who worked for then-VP Joe Biden, former CIA Director John Brennan, and was appointed by former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster in June, 2017 as his personal aide according to RedState. Ciaramella, who radio host Rush Limbaugh called "essentially a spy for John Brennan," was also a frequent visitor to the Obama White House.

In November, the Washington Examiner reported: "It is likely that the whistleblower traveled on Air Force Two at least one of the six visits that Biden made to Ukraine."

"If the whistleblower is a former employee of — associate of Joe Biden, I think that would be important. If the whistleblower was working with people on Schiff’s staff that wanted to take Trump down a year-and-a-half ago, I think that would be important. If the Schiff staff people helped write the complaint, that would be important. We’re going to get to the bottom of all of this to make sure this never happens again," said Sen. Graham.

After hearing second-hand about a July 25 call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky in which Trump asked for investigations into the Bidens, Ciaramella approached impeachment chieftain Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA)'s office (which hired two of Ciaramella's colleagues last year, including Sean Misko, who was hired in August).

Schiff's team directed Ciaramella to "Coup has started" Democratic operative attorney Mark Zaid (who vowed to "get rid of" Trump in July of 2017), who helped the CIA 'whistleblower' file a complaint on a form which had been altered to allow hearsay.

What's more, at least two of Ciaramella's colleagues from the National Security Counsel were hired by Schiff's office last year - including Sean Misko, who was hired in August.

And Schiff continues to deny knowledge of the whistleblower's identity.

Democrats, pointing to the Trump administration placing a hold on US military aid to Ukraine, unbeknownst to Zelensky, argued that President Trump abused his office and obstructed Congress' investigation. During last week's Senate trial, Trump's attorneys argued that his actions fell far short of impeachable offense.
