OPCW investigator testifies at UN that no chemical attack took place in Douma, Syria

In testimony before the United Nations Security Council, former OPCW inspection team leader and engineering expert Ian Henderson stated that their investigation had suggested no chemical attack took place in Douma, Syria, but their findings were suppressed. His appearance punched a gaping hole in the narrative the US and UK used to justify military action.

A former lead investigator from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has spoken out at the United Nations, stating in no uncertain terms that the scientific evidence suggests there was no gas attack in Douma, Syria in April 2018.

The dissenter, Ian Henderson, worked for 12 years at the international watchdog organization, serving as an inspection team leader and engineering expert. Among his most consequential jobs was assisting the international body’s fact-finding mission (FFM) on the ground in Douma.

He told a UN Security Council session convened on January 20 by Russia’s delegation that OPCW management had rejected his group’s scientific research, dismissed the team, and produced another report that totally contradicted their initial findings.

“We had serious misgivings that a chemical attack had occurred,” Henderson said, referring to the FFM team in Douma.

The former OPCW inspector added that he had compiled evidence through months of research that “provided further support for the view that there had not been a chemical attack.”

Attorney General William Barr’s Justice Department has been giving Hillary Clinton and other Democratic politicians another free pass. And federal agents are beyond steamed.

“You look at the size of this corruption and realize why Hillary warehoused all her State Dept. emails on a private server and destroyed thousands upon thousands of emails so that no one could get a look at the side deals,” Paine said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York prosecutors began making their rape case against Harvey Weinstein on Wednesday, describing the former movie producer as a Hollywood power broker who was “no match” for his female accusers.

“The man seated right there was not just a titan in Hollywood, he was a rapist,” Assistant District Attorney Meghan Hast said during opening statements before a jury in Manhattan criminal court.

Weinstein, 67, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting two women. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, predatory sexual assault.

The trial is a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement, in which women have gone public with allegations against powerful men in business and politics.

One of Weinstein’s lawyers, Damon Cheronis, said on Tuesday he intended to tell jurors in his opening statement that Weinstein’s accusers sent him “dozens of loving emails” and “bragged” about their sexual relationships with him.

Before Wednesday’s proceedings got underway, Weinstein exited a white sports utility vehicle with help from two members of his team, one carrying the walker that Weinstein has used for recent court appearances as he recovers from recent back surgery.

During the prosecution’s opening statements, Weinstein sat quietly at the defense table, occasionally sipping water from a clear plastic cup or writing on a legal pad.

Around 100 people were packed into the courtroom, including Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

Since 2017, more than 80 women including many famous actresses have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct.

Mnuchin on trade barriers: ‘We want other people to take down the Berlin Wall’

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Wednesday rejected warnings that the U.S.-China trade war could create a “digital Berlin Wall.”

In response to a question during a CNBC panel at the World Economic in Davos, Switzerland, Mnuchin said: “No, I discard that. To me, it’s about free, fair and balanced trade.” He added that “it’s not a Berlin Wall at all — it’s we want other people to take down the Berlin walls.”

Mnuchin’s comments come after 22 months of tit-for-tat tariffs between the U.S. and China, initially instigated by the Trump administration in the spring of 2018 on the basis of what it called China’s “unfair” trading practices. Washington and Beijing have yet to come to terms over high stakes digital issues like Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, 5G internet provisions, intellectual property theft and the future of the internet more broadly.

“The U.S. is one of the largest trading markets in the world. If we can get free and fair and balanced trade with China, and with our other partners, this is good for us, good for them — one of the single biggest opportunities for American workers, for American companies,” Mnuchin told CNBC’s Geoff Cutmore, citing China’s booming middle class of 400 million people.“What we’re trying to do is break down barriers to trade, which do exist,” he continued. “And I think most people know the U.S. is the most open market for trade, the most open market for investment — we want to have those same opportunities around the world.”

Mnuchin added that he looked forward to forging a new trade deal with the U.K. after the completion of its exit from the European Union.

‘No deadlines’ for phase two China deal

Earlier this week, Mnuchin said a longer-term trade deal may not remove all of the American tariffs imposed on China. The U.S. and China officially signed the first phase of the trade deal last week in Washington after nearly two years of disagreements and negotiations.

“As it relates to phase two, I would say there’s no deadlines,” Mnuchin said. “So the first issue we’re very focused on the next 30 days is implementing phase one.” The secretary added that the deal can be concluded before or after the U.S. election in November, suggesting there was no rush to get it done before the vote.

“There’s also, as part of this, a real implementation office as part of enforcement, and we’ll start on phase two,” the secretary added. “If we get that done before the election, great — if it takes longer, that’s fine.” Many investors worry the tariffs could linger for years, keeping business uncertainty high and dragging on growth.

Economists estimate that the trade tariffs cost the U.S. gross domestic product 0.3% to 0.7% in 2019, which hit China more heavily, taking a toll of a 1.6% reduction to its GDP for the year, bringing the world’s second-largest economy to its lowest rate of growth in three decades.

Barely two weeks after Donald Trump took office, Eric Ciaramella – the CIA analyst whose name was recently linked in a tweet by the president and mentioned by lawmakers as the anonymous “whistleblower" who touched off Trump's impeachment – was overheard in the White House discussing with another staffer how to remove the newly elected president from office, according to former colleagues. Sources told RealClearInvestigations the staffer with whom Ciaramella was speaking was Sean Misko. Both were Obama administration holdovers working in the Trump White House on foreign policy and national security issues. And both expressed anger over Trump’s new “America First” foreign policy, a sea change from President Obama’s approach to international affairs.

“Just days after he was sworn in they were already talking about trying to get rid of him,” said a White House colleague who overheard their conversation. “They weren’t just bent on subverting his agenda,” the former official added. “They were plotting to actually have him removed from office.”

Misko left the White House last summer to join House impeachment manager Adam Schiff’s committee, where sources say he offered “guidance” to the whistleblower, who has been officially identified only as an intelligence officer in a complaint against Trump filed under whistleblower laws. Misko then helped run the impeachment inquiry based on that complaint as a top investigator for congressional Democrats. The probe culminated in Trump’s impeachment last month on a party-line vote in the House of Representatives. Schiff and other House Democrats last week delivered the articles of impeachment to the Senate, and are now pressing the case for his removal during the trial, which began Tuesday. The coordination between the official believed to be the whistleblower and a key Democratic staffer, details of which are disclosed here for the first time, undercuts the narrative that impeachment developed spontaneously out of the “patriotism" of an “apolitical civil servant."

Two former co-workers said they overheard Ciaramella and Misko, close friends and Democrats held over from the Obama administration, discussing how to “take out,” or remove, the new president from office within days of Trump’s inauguration. These co-workers said the president’s controversial Ukraine phone call in July 2019 provided the pretext they and their Democratic allies had been looking for. “They didn’t like his policies,” another former White House official said. "They had a political vendetta against him from Day One.” Their efforts were part of a larger pattern of coordination to build a case for impeachment, involving Democratic leaders as well as anti-Trump figures both inside and outside of government. All unnamed sources for this article spoke only on condition that they not be further identified or described. Although strong evidence points to Ciaramella as the government employee who lodged the whistleblower complaint, he has not been officially identified as such. As a result, this article makes a distinction between public information released about the unnamed whistleblower/CIA analyst and specific information about Ciaramella.

WikiHow propaganda article claims vaccine injuries are a “conspiracy theory” peddled by violent, abusive parents

If you’re under the age of 18 and your parents won’t let you get vaccinated, then they must hate you and want you to die. This is what WikiHow is telling children, anyway, in a new “learn how to do anything” information page that teaches young ones how to secretly get vaccinated without their parents’ knowledge or consent.

Entitled, “How to Get Vaccinated Without Parental Consent,” the entry, dated January 9, 2020, contends that all opposition to vaccination stems from “misinformation about vaccines online” and “rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and made-up ‘facts.'” And the only way around this, it presents as the solution, is for unvaccinated children to quietly scheme out how to get jabbed without their parents knowing about it.

Not even attempting to veil their true intent, the authors of this WikiHow entry openly suggest that children should basically lie to their parents in the event that opposition to vaccination is present within the family. When begging, pleading, and otherwise manipulating their vaccine-opposed parents doesn’t work, these same children are told to seek out “another responsible adult” who will give them their shots without concern or question.

“Petition the court for emancipation if your parents are really bad,” the “Look at your options” section of the entry further reads. “Wait until you’re 18 if you think that your parents would severely punish or abuse you if they learned that you disobeyed them,” it goes on to state, planting in children’s minds the idea that parents who oppose vaccination are inherent child abusers.

A veteran detective for the Carlisle, Pennsylvania Police Department, who was also a task force officer with the FBI and a member of the Cumberland County Drug Task Force, was indicted by a federal grand jury for bribery, drug distribution, fraud and making false statements.

The indictment alleges that Christopher Collare, 52, of Blythewood, South Carolina, used his official position to obtain sex from two women in exchange for agreeing to take actions in prosecutions. In 2015, Collare allegedly agreed to accept sex or money in exchange for not appearing at an evidentiary hearing so that a criminal charge would be dismissed. In 2018, Collare allegedly agreed to accept sexual favors in exchange for taking steps to help reduce a potential sentence.

The indictment also alleges that Collare distributed heroin in 2016. The indictment alleges that between 2011 and 2018 he defrauded the Borough of Carlisle and the Cumberland County Drug Task Force by providing confidential informants with drugs and allowing informants to retain drugs that they had obtained during controlled buys.

The indictment further alleges that Collare lied on a federal form he completed during the process of becoming an FBI task force officer and that he made multiple false statements in an interview with federal agents in May 2018.

After in October Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri resigned amid worsening violence and protests related to the nation's banking crisis, but remained in a caretaker capacity, Lebanon announced Tuesday the formation of a new government, which met for the first time Wednesday. Biden Has INSANE Meltdown on Reporter When Asked About His Attacks on Sanders

Democrat presidential hopeful Joe Biden had an extremely bizarre and unsettling reaction to a reporter asking him about his latest attacks on fellow candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Appearing at a campaign event in Mason City, Iowa, Biden was asked by Ed O’Keefe of CBS why he continued to attack Sanders, despite accepting his apology over an op-ed by one of the Vermont senator’s surrogates, which called the former Vice President “corrupt.”

In response to the question, Biden turned to the reporter and repeatedly shouted “why why why why why why” before telling the reporter to “calm down,” adding “you’re getting nervous, man.”

Biden went on to say that Sanders apologized for saying he was corrupt, but did not say anything about whether or not he was telling the truth about social security.

True to form, Biden had his hands all over the reporter during the incredibly creepy exchange — even jabbing him in the chest before walking away.

Continuing his Davos media blitz, President Trump sat down for a lengthy, wide-ranging interview with CNBC host Joe Kernen where he discussed the impeachment hoax, his underappreciated economic successes, the successes and failures of Tesla and Boeing, and the American effort to suppress the spread of the mysterious new Chinese coronavirus.

During the opening minutes of the interview, after a brief preamble, Kernen jumped into questions about the coronavirus, asking Trump whether he is worried about a global pandemic.

Trump replied that the situation is completely under control.

"No. Not at all. And - we're - we have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's - going to be just fine."

Trump added that he trusts President Xi, and that the US can trust that the Chinese health officials are on top of the situation, and are no longer dissembling about the true severity of the virus.

"I do. I do. I have a great relationship with President Xi. We just signed probably the biggest deal ever made. It certainly has the potential to be the biggest deal ever made. And - it was a very interesting period of time time."

When it comes to impeachment, Trump told Kernen that he didn't have much time yesterday to pay attention to proceedings. But based on what he saw, Trump felt his team did "really good" while once again denouncing the Democrats' impeachment push as a "total hoax."

"I got - I had a busy day yesterday, as you know. You were there. And we had the speech and we had lots of meetings with different leaders, including Pakistan and others. Other countries. In addition to businessmen all over the place. But I did get to see some of it. It's a hoax. It's a total hoax. It's a perfect conversation."

On the subject of whether the Dems will succeed in calling witnesses, something that doesn't look likely after Republicans managed to shut out most of the Democratic amendments from yesterday's rules resolution, Trump said he "really [doesn't] know."

"-I really don't know. I think that- if everybody tells the truth, it's perfect. All you have to do is read the transcript. Read- if you take a look at the transcript- and it's really two transcripts. It's- you know, I had a first call which was perfect, and I had a second call which was perfect. The other thing is speak to the president of Ukraine. He's been great, I have to tell you. And his foreign minister's been great."

For somebody who spent most of his campaign bashing the global elites like his one-time rival Hillary Clinton, Trump acknowledged that, although many of the power players in attendance might not admit it, they're fans of his economic policies, including his dedication to global stimulus. Kernen pointed out that all the CEOs who appeared on CNBC yesterday directly from Davos seemed to fixate on the strength of the US economy, instead of the impeachment fracas.

On Tuesday the Virginia Senate advanced legislation that would allow authorities to take guns away from people deemed dangerous to themselves or others.

The Democratic-led Senate gave preliminary approval to approved the so-called “red flag” law. SB 240 would create a process for attorneys and law enforcement to file emergency orders prohibiting a person from purchasing, possessing or transferring a firearm if they pose “a substantial risk of injury to himself or others.”

The move comes a day after tens of thousands of gun-rights activists rallied peacefully at the state Capitol on Monday protesting the proposed anti-gun legislation.

The measure is set for a final vote in the Senate before going to the House.

Republicans blasted the bill as an assault on gun rights and civil liberties.

Democrats said the bill was a thoughtful measure that would preserve due process while also protecting people against potential gun violence.

It’s been a tough few days for the news media, having exaggerated the involvement of white supremacists and haters at the gun rally in Richmond, Virginia, hyping impeachment coverage, and watching in dismay as level-headed Arizona Sen. Martha McSally called a CNN reporter a “liberal hack.”

And now, there’s a survey that shows just how much confidence in the news media consumers have lost, a trend started decades ago but supercharged since the 2016 election. According to a survey done for SeniorList, a medical device firm focused on older Americans, 55% of Americans believe that the media is “corrupt.” In addition, many, especially Republicans, believe that the media exaggerates stories while some Democrats believe reporters minimize issues, a sign that the political polarization in media has deepened. And, said the survey provided exclusively to Secrets, consumers are bored with the repetitive nature of some electronic and internet outlets.

“The repetitive programming on networks and websites and the emphasis of the media to pump the news cycle with the same stories can create burnout, causing many to question the overall quality of the news,” said the survey analysis. The answer, it said, is to read more news sources and check facts out.

And it offered some tips to news media consumers:

Be aware of inherent bias in reporting, and stick to media that deliver quality news stories.

Read up on which sources have a high level of bias and which are objective in their reporting.

Enjoy opinion-based programming with a grain of salt, knowing they have a narrative to push.

Fact-check whenever possible, even when you trust the source.

Question what you see on the internet, and be aware of satire or fake news websites that promote false stories.

Salih, Trump discuss American troop drawdown from Iraq

Iraqi President Barham Salim and his US counterpart Donald Trump have exchanged viewpoints about a reduction in the number of American military forces in the war-ravaged Arab country, weeks after a parliamentary bill demanded the withdrawal of all US-led foreign troops.

“We've had a very good relationship. And we're down to a very low number. We're down to 5,000. So we're down to a very low number, historically low, and we'll see what happens,” Trump told journalists following a meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos on Wednesday with the Iraqi leader.

The prime minister said Iraq rejects violation of its sovereignty, particularly the US military's violation of Iraqi airspace in the airstrike that assassinated Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, the deputy head of PMU, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and their companions.

“The prime minister said American forces had entered Iraq and drones are flying in its airspace without permission from Iraqi authorities and this was a violation of the bilateral agreements,” the statement added.

Turkish-Backed Militants Target Syrian Army Positions With Guided Missiles (Videos)

Militants of the National Front for Liberation (NFL) carried out on January 21 a series of attacks on Syrian Arab Army (SAA) personnel and positions in Greater Idlib using anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

Two of the attacks targeted a position and a gathering of Syrian troops in the towns of al-Tah and Abu Dafr in Idlib’s southeastern countryside.

Trump Admin Revives Influential Criminal Justice Commission

Attorney General William Barr on Wednesday announced the formation of a presidential commission on criminal justice, revitalizing a body that in the 1960s fundamentally altered the American criminal justice system.

The new members of the Presidential Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice took their oath of office, administered by Barr, Wednesday morning, and immediately set to work on their agenda for the coming months. Barr's remarks linked their work to the last such commission, which was organized by President Lyndon Johnson.

"President Trump is an unwavering supporter of our men and women in blue, and he recognized that this commission is much needed to support law enforcement," Barr said. "It is, to be sure, long overdue. The last time there was a national commission on law enforcement was in 1965."

Barr's allusion to the Johnson crime commission sets the stage for a comprehensive reassessment of the criminal justice system. The new commission's work will likely highlight how the challenges of criminal justice have changed radically over the past half century.

The new commission is a diverse group of law enforcement officers, litigators, and stakeholders from local, state, and federal jurisdictions. It will be chaired by Phil Keith, who currently serves as the director of the Community Oriented Policing Services office within the Justice Department. Other board members include local sheriffs and police chiefs, U.S. attorneys, the Florida attorney general, and the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

This group, Barr said Wednesday, will discuss key issues facing law enforcement in the 21st century. These include the challenges of mental illness; improving officer recruitment, training, and retention; understanding the rise of mental health problems among police officers; the challenges of new technologies; the causes and effects of "diminished respect" toward police officers; and the better incorporation of social services organizations into the policing process.

The push to establish a new commission on crime has commanded bipartisan backing. Senators Gary Peters (D., Mich.), Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), and John Cornyn (R., Tex.) introduced legislation to establish a commission modeled on the one from 1965. President Donald Trump issued an executive order in October that formally established the commission Barr swore in Wednesday.

Cornyn cheered Wednesday's news as a step in the right direction for American criminal justice.

Voters in the battleground state of Florida are continuing to show their support for President Trump amid the ongoing Senate impeachment trial, with one voter warning that history will remember “this House” and “this speaker” for “the travesty they’ve done to this country.”

Trump supporters in the Sunshine State reacted to the first day of the Senate impeachment trial and continued to show their unwavering support for the president.

“How will history view this time in America,” a Fox News reporter asked a voter in Jupiter, Florida, on Wednesday, who said history will remember the president and his family for their “sacrifices” and “what he has done for this country.”

“They’re also going to remember this House, this speaker, for what the travesty they’ve done to this country, the damage that they’ve done to this country, and the harm across the world. They will be remembered,” she said to applause.

“After what was said yesterday, we all heard some of the things that were said in the proceedings, you get the screenshot of Schiff and Nadler together, and you just can’t help but look at the two of them standing next to one another and think ‘that’s the Democrats’ answer to Abbott and Costello,'” another joked.

Fox News also spoke to a Trump supporter who immigrated from Mexico, who said that the Democrats’ impeachment effort is embarrassing the U.S.

“It’s an embarrassment to try to impeach the best president ever. I mean his accomplishments are just huge,” she said, citing the low unemployment rate and his efforts to halt illegal immigrants from entering the country.

“I hope all the Republican senators stand strong,” she added.

The general sentiment is reflected in a Florida Chamber of Commerce poll released on Tuesday, which showed that the majority of likely voters in Florida, 52 percent, oppose convicting and removing the president.

The breakdown by party shows a strong sense of unity among the GOP, with 87 percent disapproving of removal and nine percent approving. Florida Democrats are not quite as united as Republicans on the issue of impeachment, with 73 percent approving of Trump’s removal but one-fifth, or 20 percent, disapproving.

The problem with what President Vladimir Putin announced in his Federal Assembly address this week, and what he did immediately after, is that things don’t look the way he says they should.

The difference was written on Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev’s face. He thinks Putin has destroyed the political forces of the candidate with the best chance of winning the presidential election of 2024 — himself. The businessmen and government officials who have depended on Medvedev are acknowledging this realization on the telephone.

An hour after this picture was taken, at a meeting with Putin of the assembled ministers at Government House (Kremlin term for White House), Medvedevannounced: “as the Government of the Russian Federation we must give the President of this country an opportunity to make all the necessary decisions for this. Under the circumstances, it would be correct for the entire Government of the Russian Federation to resign in accordance with Article 117 of the Constitution.”

He looked and sounded unconvinced that his exit was “correct”.

The constitutional provision to which Medvedev referred is a notorious relic.Article 117 was created by President Boris Yeltsin after he used the military to crush parliament’s opposition in October 1993. Several hundred people inside the White House were killed.

The new constitution was voted two months later by the disputable margin of 58% in a disputable turnout of 54%. Article 117 then gave the president the power to block a prime minister’s resignation; veto a vote of no-confidence in the government by the State Duma; and the power to decide whether and when to dissolve parliament and hold new elections.

In Putin’s speech on Wednesday, he began his proposals for a constitutional amendment with the announcement: “We have overcome the situation when certain powers in the government were essentially usurped by oligarch clans.”Usurpation of power by Yeltsin at the expense of the Congress of People’s Deputies in 1993 was not explained then, nor since, by the operations of the oligarchs. They came later. In Russian public opinion, the oligarchs continue to be extra-constitutionally powerful today. The polls show Putin’s claim is not believed.

If we need to amend the applicable law, I will do so soon and I want State Duma deputies to support this as well. We just need the lawyers to provide assessments on this account.”

Sources in Russian business and government interpret Medvedev’s new job as a gold-plated watch — consolation prize for losing the presidential succession race. Sources are unanimous in judging what has happened to be the liquidation of the Medvedev faction.

Politically, the rationale is obvious. Public disapproval of the government’s performance, and the stress which the ongoing US war is inflicting on Russia’s domestic growth, have been showing a consistent trend.

Hedge funds suffered almost $98 billion in outflows in 2019, the most in three years, as managers trailed the stock market rally.

Investors pulled more than $16 billion from the industry in December alone, capping a year that saw the longest stretch of monthly client withdrawals since the 2008 financial crisis, according to data compiled by eVestment. The spike in redemptions came as the industry lagged behind the S&P 500 Index, which returned 31% last year with dividends reinvested. Hedge funds on average gained 9.2%, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Even the year’s top-performing strategy, equity funds, ended 2019 with outflows of $27.5 billion. Two strategies to see inflows were event-driven and mortgage-backed securities, bringing in $16.5 billion and $10.9 billion for the year, respectively.

Four killed in fiery plane crash at Corona airport

Four people were killed Wednesday when a small plane crashed at the Corona Municipal Airport, authorities said.

The Corona Fire Department and Corona police responded shortly after noon to the scene, where they found a plane on fire in nearby brush, the agencies said in a tweet. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which spread to a small grassy area.

The crash occurred on the east side of the airport, which is now closed to flights. Photos posted on social media showed several planes parked nearby.

A man who said he witnessed the crash described to OnScene.TV what appeared to be a problematic takeoff. The plane initially lifted off the ground, he said, but didn’t gain altitude. The plane bounced back onto the runway before the pilot attempted another takeoff.

The top Russia adviser at the White House, Andrew Peek, is now on administrative leave, CBS News has confirmed.

Bloomberg and Axios first reported Peek's removal from the White House National Security Council.

Two sources confirmed to CBS News that allegations involving Peek were under investigation before he was detailed to the White House in November.

The National Security Council declined to comment, as did the State Department. CBS News attempted to reach Peek at his NSC email, but the email bounced back.

Peek is the White House's third top Russia adviser. Tim Morrison and Fiona Hill each preceded him in the job, and both testified before Congress in the impeachment inquiry of President Trump.

Peek, who is a deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, has also served as a U.S. Army intelligence officer advising on intelligence and special operations for General John Allen, his State Department bio says. He advised on direct action, foreign internal defense, intelligence and Pakistani aspects of the war in Afghanistan.

He also was the national security and foreign affairs adviser for GOP Senators Gordon Smith and Mike Johanns and worked on Iran sanctions measures during the 110th Congress.

Small Plane With at Least 4 On Board Crashes in Southern California

On arriving at the scene, the local police and fire teams discovered that the plane and the nearby area were on fire, with approximately 80 gallons of fuel burnt as a result of the crash.

A small plane has crashed near the town of Corona, in the state of California, local police and fire departments said on Wednesday.

The authorities later said there were four fatalities resulting from the accident.

The Virginia state Senate passed a “red flag” law that would allow authorities to take guns away from people who are deemed a danger to others or themselves.

The Democrat-controlled Senate voted for the measure, SB240, on Wednesday along a party-line vote of 21-19, WHSV reported.

The bill stipulates that courts that find “that there is probable cause to believe that a person poses a substantial risk of personal injury to himself or others in the near future by such person’s possession or acquisition of a firearm, shall issue an ex parte emergency substantial risk order,” according to language of the bill. “Such order shall prohibit the person who is subject to the order from purchasing, possessing, or transporting a firearm for the duration of the order.”

Trump makes Roe anniversary ‘Sanctity of Life Day’: ‘We will never tire of defending innocent life’

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 22, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – U.S. President Donald J. Trump has declared January 22, the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision imposing abortion on demand across the country, to be “National Sanctity of Human Life Day.”

In a proclamation issued yesterday, Trump declared that “every person — the born and unborn, the poor, the downcast, the disabled, the infirm, and the elderly — has inherent value” and said that the U.S. “proudly and strongly reaffirms our commitment to protect the precious gift of life at every stage, from conception to natural death.”

He touted his administration’s pro-life achievements at home and abroad.

The proclamation referenced his administration’s efforts to build “an international coalition to dispel the concept of abortion as a fundamental human right” and said that his administration would “oppose any projects that attempt to assert a global right to taxpayer‑funded abortion on demand, up to the moment of delivery.”

“We will never tire of defending innocent life — at home or abroad,” he promised.

The proclamation referenced the recent decline in the number and rate of abortions in America.

“Americans should celebrate this decline in the number and rate of abortions, which represents lives saved,” said Trump.

Trump urged Congress to “prohibit abortions of later-term babies.” On the campaign trail, he has repeatedly mentioned Democrats’ defense of abortion through all nine months of pregnancy and even their opposition to banning infanticide.

Trump also issued a particular thanks to pro-lifers and those who support women in “unexpected pregnancies” and who help to “provide healing to women who have had abortions.”

He wrote:

As a Nation, we must remain steadfastly dedicated to the profound truth that all life is a gift from God, who endows every person with immeasurable worth and potential. Countless Americans are tireless defenders of life and champions for the vulnerable among us. Over the past century, more than a few great writers have expressed concern about humanity’s future. In The Iron Heel(1908), the American writer Jack London pictured a world in which a handful of wealthy corporate titans – the ‘oligarchs’ – kept the masses at bay with a brutal combination of rewards and punishments. Much of humanity lived in virtual slavery, while the fortunate ones were bought off with decent wages that allowed them to live comfortably – but without any real control over their lives.

In We (1924), the brilliant Russian writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, anticipating the excesses of the emerging Soviet Union, envisioned a world in which people were kept in check through pervasive monitoring. The walls of their homes were made of clear glass, so everything they did could be observed. They were allowed to lower their shades an hour a day to have sex, but both the rendezvous time and the lover had to be registered first with the state.

In Brave New World (1932), the British author Aldous Huxley pictured a near-perfect society in which unhappiness and aggression had been engineered out of humanity through a combination of genetic engineering and psychological conditioning. And in the much darker novel 1984 (1949), Huxley’s compatriot George Orwell described a society in which thought itself was controlled; in Orwell’s world, children were taught to use a simplified form of English called Newspeak in order to assure that they could never express ideas that were dangerous to society.

These are all fictional tales, to be sure, and in each the leaders who held the power used conspicuous forms of control that at least a few people actively resisted and occasionally overcame. But in the non-fiction bestseller The Hidden Persuaders (1957) – recently released in a 50th-anniversary edition – the American journalist Vance Packard described a ‘strange and rather exotic’ type of influence that was rapidly emerging in the United States and that was, in a way, more threatening than the fictional types of control pictured in the novels. According to Packard, US corporate executives and politicians were beginning to use subtle and, in many cases, completely undetectable methods to change people’s thinking, emotions and behaviour based on insights from psychiatry and the social sciences.

Most of us have heard of at least one of these methods: subliminal stimulation, or what Packard called ‘subthreshold effects’ – the presentation of short messages that tell us what to do but that are flashed so briefly we aren’t aware we have seen them. In 1958, propelled by public concern about a theatre in New Jersey that had supposedly hidden messages in a movie to increase ice cream sales, the National Association of Broadcasters – the association that set standards for US television – amended its code to prohibit the use of subliminal messages in broadcasting. In 1974, the Federal Communications Commission opined that the use of such messages was ‘contrary to the public interest’. Legislation to prohibit subliminal messaging was also introduced in the US Congress but never enacted. Both the UK and Australia have strict laws prohibiting it.

Subliminal stimulation is probably still in wide use in the US – it’s hard to detect, after all, and no one is keeping track of it – but it’s probably not worth worrying about. Research suggests that it has only a small impact, and that it mainly influences people who are already motivated to follow its dictates; subliminal directives to drink affect people only if they’re already thirsty.

The Bond study was largely ignored, but another Facebook experiment, published in 2014 in PNAS, prompted protests around the world. In this study, for a period of a week, 689,000 Facebook users were sent news feeds that contained either an excess of positive terms, an excess of negative terms, or neither. Those in the first group subsequently used slightly more positive terms in their communications, while those in the second group used slightly more negative terms in their communications. This was said to show that people’s ‘emotional states’ could be deliberately manipulated on a massive scale by a social media company, an idea that many people found disturbing. People were also upset that a large-scale experiment on emotion had been conducted without the explicit consent of any of the participants.

Facebook’s consumer profiles are undoubtedly massive, but they pale in comparison with those maintained by Google, which is collecting information about people 24/7, using more than 60 different observation platforms – the search engine, of course, but also Google Wallet, Google Maps, Google Adwords, Google Analytics, Chrome, Google Docs, Android, YouTube, and on and on. Gmail users are generally oblivious to the fact that Google stores and analyses every email they write, even the drafts they never send – as well as all the incoming email they receive from both Gmail and non-Gmail users.

According to Google’s privacy policy – to which one assents whenever one uses a Google product, even when one has not been informed that he or she is using a Google product – Google can share the information it collects about you with almost anyone, including government agencies. But never with you. Google’s privacy is sacrosanct; yours is nonexistent.

Could Google and ‘those we work with’ (language from the privacy policy) use the information they are amassing about you for nefarious purposes – to manipulate or coerce, for example? Could inaccurate information in people’s profiles (which people have no way to correct) limit their opportunities or ruin their reputations?

Certainly, if Google set about to fix an election, it could first dip into its massive database of personal information to identify just those voters who are undecided. Then it could, day after day, send customised rankings favouring one candidate to just those people. One advantage of this approach is that it would make Google’s manipulation extremely difficult for investigators to detect.

Crystal Geyser Water Pleads Guilty to Dumping Arsenic into California's Ecosystem==

The beverage maker agreed to pay a fine of $5 million after pleading guilty to two felony offenses earlier this month

The company that makes Crystal Geyser Natural Alpine Spring Water has admitted to illegally handling hazardous wastes at its facility in Olancha, California.

On Jan. 9, CG Roxane, LLC, the company behind the bottled water brand, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful storage of hazardous waste and one count of unlawful transportation of hazardous material.

In a plea agreement filed in U.S. District Court, the beverage-maker agreed to pay a criminal fine of $5 million, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The groundwater that CG Roxane sourced from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California contained naturally occurring arsenic, which it filtered out using sand filters.

“To maintain the effectiveness of the sand filters, CG Roxane back-flushed the filters with a sodium hydroxide solution, which generated thousands of gallons of arsenic-contaminated wastewater,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

The statement clarified that the case concerned the violations in handling and transporting the wastewater, and not the safety of the Crystal Geyser bottled water, which is sold nationwide in stores like Walmart.

Representatives from CG Roxane did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Here’s how it looks: Andrew Peek was a mole. A resistance spy sent into the Trump administration as part of the allied deep state resistance effort. Someone caught him attempting to access something, and here’s how CTH can tell.

Keep in mind, National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien also comes from inside the Dept of State. So whether Mike Pompeo and Robert O’Brien set-up Peek as a mole, or whether Peek’s activities were discovered without their foreknowledge is an open question. However, I find it impossible to believe that NSA Robert O’Brien didn’t know the ideology of Peek prior to the appointment.

Additionally, in the periphery of downstream consequence, and seemingly out of nowhere today, impeachment Lead Manager and HPSCI Chairman Adam Schiff said:

“The Intelligence Community is beginning to withhold documents from Congress on the issue of Ukraine. They appear to be succumbing to pressure from the administration. The NSA in particular is withholding what are potentially relevant documents to our oversight.”

Considering the timeline; and considering the topic(s); and considering the ideology; there’s a strong possibility the person on the other end of Peeks’ communication effort was someone in the network of Adam Schiff, perhaps Mary McCord or similar…

After leaving the military, Allen continued to work as an adviser to Secretary of State John Kerry and former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. In this capacity he worked closely with Israeli, Palestinian, and Jordanian interlocutors on the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Plan.

Supreme Court has chance to strike bipartisan blow against anti-religious discrimination

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear a case that has somewhat flown under the radar but has massive implications.

The ruling the court hands down in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue may establish once and for all whether states should be free to exclude religious organizations from government programs. There’s no reason that both liberal and conservative justices can’t take this opportunity to come together in support of equality for all, religious liberty, and educational freedom.

The case concerns a Montana program granting $150 in tax credits to those who donate to help fund private school tuition scholarships. Single mother Kendra Espinoza sought to use the scholarship program to send her children to a private religious school. A state agency excluded religious schools from the program, citing an archaic “Blaine amendment” in the state constitution that bars taxpayer dollars from going to religious organizations. The Montana Supreme Court upheld this backward decision.

This is foolish. The state has no right to discriminate arbitrarily against religious schools, and it sure seems like a blatant violation of the Constitution’s equal protection clause, which bars government discrimination. As Nicole Russell explained in these pages, the history of Blaine amendments is “steeped in bigotry.”

And no, allowing taxpayer dollars to subsidize education indirectly at a religious school doesn’t violate the “separation of church and state.” In fact, those words appear nowhere in the Constitution. The First Amendment does, of course, bar the government from establishing a formal religion, through the establishment clause. But treating all schools equally by allowing secular and religious organizations alike to participate in the scholarship program in no way would establish a state religion. If anything, the status quo does, by establishing atheism or agnosticism as the state religion.

Dark Money Group Founded By Bernie Sanders Is Violating The Law, Watchdog Group Says

A dark money group boosting Sen. Bernie Sanders’s presidential bid is violating campaign finance laws, the watchdog group Common Cause said in a Federal Election Commission Complaint filed Wednesday.

Sanders founded Our Revolution in 2016. The group can raise unlimited sums of money without having to disclose the identities of its donors.

Our Revolution’s affiliation with Sanders triggers the federal “soft money” ban, Common Cause attorney Paul S. Ryan said.

Sanders told Our Revolution during a conference call in September 2019 that they’re “doing some of the most important work that can be done in our country.”

A dark money group founded by Sen. Bernie Sanders is violating federal campaign finance law, according to a Federal Election Commission complaint filed Wednesday.

The political nonprofit group Our Revolution, which Sanders founded in 2016, has been violating the federal “soft money” ban by boosting his presidential campaign since its launch in February 2019, the complaint from the watchdog group Common Cause states.

Campaign finance laws state that groups “directly or indirectly established” by federal officeholders such as Sanders can’t “solicit, receive, direct, transfer, or spend funds” for federal electoral activity that exceeds the limitations of the law, which in Our Revolution’s case would be $5,000 per election.

“Because Sanders set up Our Revolution and they have raised and spent money in candidate elections, Our Revolution is required to comply with contribution limits, register with the FEC and discloses its donors — but it hasn’t,” Common Cause attorney Paul S. Ryan told The Associated Press. “It’s his establishment of the group that triggers these laws. That means a $5,000 limit, full donor disclosure and no contributions from prohibited sources.”

“The facts surrounding Our Revolution, including its founding by Sen. Sanders, its receipt of six-figure contributions, its failure to disclose donors to the FEC, and its political spending in Iowa and elsewhere, point to a clear violation of the federal soft money ban,” Ryan added in a separate statement Wednesday.

Our Revolution is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit group that can accept unlimited contributions without disclosing the identities of its donors. The group has received $9.5 million in contributions starting in 2016 through 2018. In 2018, Our Revolution reported that it received contributions of $218,309 and $195,000, but didn’t disclose in its tax filing the individual or group behind those donations.

Rand Paul: 45 Republicans Prepared to Dismiss Charges Against President

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Wednesday that 45 GOP senators are prepared to dismiss the charges against President Trump and effectively end the Senate impeachment trial.

The Kentucky senator told the Washington Post on day two of the Senate impeachment trial that 45 Republicans are ready to dismiss the charges against Trump. (Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the upper chamber.) He estimated that “five to eight” want to “hear a little more.”

“There are 45, with about five to eight wanting to hear a little more,” Paul told the Post. “I still would like to dismiss it, but there aren’t the votes to do it just yet.”

However, Paul said he is not pushing the point just yet.

“I will push it at some point,” he told the paper, adding, “The more Adam Schiff speaks, the more we become unified.”

Paul has openly rejected the Democrats’ calls for additional witnesses and has issued a political threat to his GOP colleagues, in the event they side with Democrats.

“If you vote against Hunter Biden, you’re voting to lose your election, basically. Seriously. That’s what it is,” Paul said, according to Politico. He continued:

If you don’t want to vote and you think you’re going to have to vote against Hunter Biden, you should just vote against witnesses, period. My first preference would be to be done with it as soon as possible and not to have any witnesses.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters on Wednesday that a witness trade is “off the table,” but Paul affirmed that he does not believe the Senate should call former national security adviser John Bolton as a witness, referring to him as “a disgruntled employee with an ax to grind.”

“It’s unknown. Some people who have talked to him think he has an ax to grind, that he’s angry he was publicly fired by the president,” Paul told the Post. He went on:

But he also has a history of believing in unlimited powers for the president. Which is the guiding light for John Bolton at this point? Axe to grind and books to sell? Or, be a player and say ‘even if I’m gone, he’s doing what I want on Iran and other things?’

Nevertheless, Paul previously outlined his contingency plan, telling Politico that he will insist they call on another witness in the event of a Bolton subpoena.

“If they insist on having people like Bolton coming forward, my insistence will be not just one witness. But that the president should be able to call any witnesses that he deems necessary to his defense,” he said.

Paul’s comments come as Trump’s lawyers resist filing a motion to dismiss the charges, according to an individual close to the president’s team. That decision allows House managers to proceed with their presentation when senators reconvene Wednesday afternoon.

McConnell stressed last week that there is “little or no sentiment” among GOP lawmakers to dismiss the charges before hearing both sides of the opening arguments.

“There is little or no sentiment in the Republican conference for a motion to dismiss,” the majority leader told reporters, noting that the lawmakers feel “an obligation to listen to the arguments.”

“And we’ve laid out, in this resolution, an opportunity for everybody to sit there … to listen carefully to the arguments by both the prosecution and the defense, to follow that up with written questions, submitted through the chief justice,” he continued.

“And that means listening to the case, not dismissing the case,” he added.

Macron is first French leader in over 20 years to visit Western Wall

The Western Wall, one of Judaism’s most holy sites after the Temple Mount, is politically significant because it is located in east Jerusalem.

French President Emmanuel Macron stood before the ancient stones of Jerusalem’s Western Wall on Wednesday, marking the first such high-level visit since former French president Jacques Chirac’s tense trip to the Old City in 1996.

The Western Wall is part of Judaism’s most holy site, the Temple Mount, and is the only remaining part of the Jewish Temple compound that stood there before it was destroyed 2,000 years ago.

But its location in eastern Jerusalem, abutting Islam’s third-most holy site, al-Haram al-Sharif, also makes it the most politically sensitive site in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Visits there by heads of state are rare because they were seen as tacit recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the site. Such visits, however, have become more acceptable since US President Donald Trump went to the Western Wall in 2017, becoming the first American president to do so while in office.

Still, it is unusual for a Western European head of state to go to the Western Wall. Macron’s visit was particularly striking because he has been highly critical of Israeli sovereignty in east Jerusalem and its military control of Area C of the West Bank.

On Wednesday, however, he braved the rain and winds to place his hands on the Wall’s ancient crevices.

“I feel the holiness and the history here,” Macron said.

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who is in charge of the site, thanked Macron for coming and told him it conveyed appreciation for the Jewish nation’s history and heritage, of which France is a part. According to a press release put out by the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, Rabinowitz explained the power of the site for every Jew around the world, explaining that synagogues, including in France, face Jerusalem and the Western Wall.

Macron also visited al-Haram ash-Sharif compound on the Temple Mount, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Crusader-era Church of St. Anne, which was gifted by the Ottomans to French Emperor Napoleon III in 1856. Neither Israeli nor Palestinian officials were with him at the Western Wall or on the Temple Mount.

The St. Anne visit was a symbolic stop underscoring France’s historic influence in the region, in which Paris still considers itself to be an important player.

Suspect sought after several people hurt during shooting in downtown Seattle

Several people were hurt Wednesday evening when gunfire rang out, less than two hours after an officer-involved shooting occurred in Belltown.

Police said they were searching for a suspect who opened fire at 4th and Pine streets shortly after 5 p.m. near a McDonalds restaurant.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the gunfire or the extent of the victim's injuries.

Several police officers responded to the scene as they looked for a suspect.

That officer-involved shooting occurred less than three hours after a 28-year-old man was shot in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle by police.

Police say the suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries and that the shooting in the 300 block of Blanchard Street involved both the police department and the King County Sheriff's Office.

Russian FM: US Withdrawal from Treaty on Open Skies Will Damage European Security

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington’s withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies seriously damages European security and prompts Moscow to respond, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in response to reporters’ questions sent prior to the annual press conference on Friday. Moscow will do everything possible to keep the treaty alive, the foreign ministry added, according to Sputnik.

“We consider the Treaty on Open Skies an important measure to build confidence and transparency in the military field. We are aware of its significance and the need for full operations. In connection with the information about the possible US withdrawal from the treaty, we would like to note that Russia will do everything possible to preserve it,” a statement on the foreign ministry’s website read.

The Treaty on Open Skies, which came into force in 2002, although signed in 1992, is designed to establish surveillance over the territories of its participants by both manned and unmanned aerial craft.

It currently has 35 participants, including Russia and the United States, but Washington has recently announced that it is considering withdrawing from the agreement, claiming “security concerns and a potential breach of the agreement by Russia”, which Moscow denies.

Russia, one of the treaty’s first signatories, ratified the treaty in 2001. It has long maintained the need to preserve the agreement allowing mutual surveillance of flights to boost military transparency, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov calling Washington’s recent move “regrettable”.

Deadbeat Dad Hunter Biden Renting 12,000-Per-Month Hollywood Hills Home While Avoiding Paying Child Support to Baby Mama Lunden Roberts

Deadbeat dad Hunter Biden is paying $12,000 a month to rent a custom home in the Hollywood Hills while he refuses to pay his baby mama Lunden Roberts child support.

Hunter had a child with 28-year-old Lunden Roberts after meeting her at a DC strip joint where she worked as a stripper and she is in court demanding Hunter pay child support.

Hunter is defying a court order to disclose the last 5 years of his financial records as part of a child support lawsuit filed by Lunden Roberts and her lawyers have asked the court to hold Biden in contempt.

Hunter Biden was ordered to Arkansas court next Wednesday to explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt for violating court orders to reveal his financial information.

Lunden Roberts told the court that Hunter Biden “had no involvement in the child’s life since the child’s birth, never interacted with the child, never parented the child,” and “could not identify the child out of a photo lineup.”

One of Hunter Biden’s businesses, Skaneateles LLC, is registered to the Hollywood Hills home, reported The Examiner.

Hunter Biden is defying a court order to disclose his financial information as part of a child support fight while renting a $3.8 million designer home in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, for $12,000 per month.

Biden and his new wife, Melissa Cohen, are getting use of a stunning, midcentury modern home for the price.

The house’s owner, Shane Khoh, revealed the arrangement to the Washington Examiner on Wednesday. Khoh, a real estate investor, said he had no prior relationship with Biden or Cohen before they moved into the home last summer.

“I don’t know them at all. I put it out on the market, and they rented it,” he said.

Biden’s gated rental home, built by renowned modernist architects Conrad Buff and Donald Hensman, features floor-to-ceiling windows, a pool, a guest house, and panoramic city views. The fully updated abode was on the market for $3.8 million before it was taken off last summer, according to listings.

One of Biden’s businesses, Skaneateles LLC, is registered to the Hollywood Hills address, according to corporate records. Biden used the company to purchase a 10% equity stock in Chinese investment fund BHR Equity Investment Fund Management Co. in 2017, according to his attorney.

Hunter is due in court January 29 for a pre-trial hearing.

Last month Hunter Biden was spotted driving around in a brand new Porsche Panamera with his wife Melissa Cohen who is pregnant with his fifth child!

Need help researching Council of International Development Companies
