I'm speculating here. I can't help but wonder if the Austen Heinz suicide has some relationship with all that is going on with respect to alleged manufactured viruses. His name suggests a possible connection with certain key players in world events. His company, Cambrian Genomics, laser-printed DNA. The company appears to have folded following his suicide.

Coronavirus: WHO chief warns against 'trolls and conspiracy theories'

"The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that "trolls and conspiracy theories" are undermining their response to the new coronavirus.

Diplomats have also infringed on academic freedom by complaining about on-campus speakers and events, by trying to coerce faculty, and by threatening retaliation against American university programs in China.

The main instruments of Chinese power on American campuses are the Confucius Institutes and CSSA chapters.

CIs, as the Confucius Institutes are known, were first established in 2004 to provide Chinese language instruction, but they now teach Chinese society, culture, and other topics. They have also, incredibly, organized demonstrations on American soil, often to welcome Chinese leaders or to hound the Dalai Lama.

The CIs operate at Beijing’s direction. The 107 or so Confucius Institutes in the U.S. formally report to the Hanban, the National Chinese Language Office, “affiliated” with the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Pompeo has to put his foot down and prevent these governors from selling off parts of the USA to China, Qatar, and other countries. POTUS may even have to nullify certain illegal agreements the states have made with China.

I'm finding in my line of work that when we competitively bid for State work in one State other State Agencies are competing with us also and WINNING!!!

A man has been arrested after allegedly deliberately driving a van into a tent full of Trump supporters who were working to register new voters at a shopping center parking lot.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Kernan Village Shopping Center in eastern Jacksonville, Florida, when a man, later identified by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office as 27-year-old Gregory Timm, allegedly drove a van through a tent where people were working to register voters. The driver narrowly missed several people in the tent and fled the scene after the incident by car.

China has spent 31.6 billion yuan ($4.5 billion) to control the outbreak of the new coronavirus, Finance Minister Liu Kun said.

About 71.9 billion yuan of fiscal funds have been allocated to the epidemic, including ensuring medical care and outbreak control measures are in place, Liu said on Sunday.

The central government’s fiscal authorities will continue to offer favorable policies to curb the spread of the virus, Liu said in remarks posted on the finance ministry’s website. So I have dropped this data center picture twice now, yesterday it was mostly ignored but a bit later on 8kun was hit with what Codemonkey described on Twitter "really heavy attacks, as if someone really wanted 8kun offline) I dropped it again today and it was noticed by baker. It wasn't long that 8kun was heavily attacked again and actually went down. So it made me really wonder if this is the one triggering those attacks.

I started digging more into this said data center and it turns out it isn't actually owned by Google at all. It's owned by Dubai based company called Designs LLC. This foreign company not only owns the property but they are also the ones building the data center. Essentially Google only leases it from them, meaning Designs LLC just secured constant money flow from Google forever basically. We all know Google could've easily bought the property and build the data center themselves so why didn't they? It smells like big time corruption to me.

SALEM - Gov. Kate Brown is planning her first trade mission to three Asian countries this fall, the governor's office announced Monday.

Kristen Grainger, Brown's communications director, said the governor will travel to China, Vietnam and Japan for seven to eight days in October to "strengthen business relationships that are existing," explore new business opportunities in the U.S. and promote Oregon exports. The governor's office did not immediately provide additional details.

On Monday, Brown met with a Vietnamese delegation of 14 national, provincial and local political leaders in her office at the Capitol.

Brown's predecessor, former Gov. John Kitzhaber, made similar trips to Asia in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, he visited Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo to promote Oregon agricultural products, green technology and tourism.

Portland-based ScanlanKemperBard Cos., one of the largest real estate merchant banking firms in the Western United States, acquired the Class A trophy property located at 222 W. Columbia St. KOIN Center has approximately 355,000 rental square feet, which includes retail and restaurant space, offices and luxury residential units on the upper 11 floors. SKB bought the office portion of the property, which is reportedly about 253,000 square feet. The building’s tenants include the KOIN television station, Skanska, Wells Fargo Advisors and Schnitzer Steel Industries.

Clayton Jew and David Wientjes, who are both first vice presidents in the San Francisco office of Kidder Mathews, represented the seller. They described the purchase as a “rare opportunity to acquire one of Portland’s more desirable assets.”

APIC moved its offices last year from Portland to San Francisco, where it is focusing on hotels, retail and residential properties, according to the Portland Business Journal. The firm, which owns businesses in the U.S. and China, acquired the KOIN Center in December 2009 for about $53 million.

Neil Mallon Bush was born in 1955 and named after his grandfather's Yale buddy Neil Mallon, the corporate CEO who gave George H.W. Bush his first job in the Texas oil business.

Bush became a public symbol of the $500 billion savings and loan scandal. Protesters picketed his home and pasted mock wanted posters around Washington: "Jail Neil Bush."

With Silverado and JNB both belly up, Bush started Apex Energy, a methane gas exploration company. He invested $3,000 of his own money and got $2.3 million from two companies run by his father's friend Louis Marx, heir to the Marx toy fortune.

For the last several years, Bush's main business interest has been Ignite!, the educational software company he co-founded in 1999. To fund Ignite!, Bush has raised $23 million from U.S. investors (including his parents), as well as businessmen from Taiwan, Japan, Kuwait, the British Virgin Islands and the United Arab Emirates, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Last year, Ignite! also entered into a partnership with a Mexican company, Grupo Carso Telecom. The partnership enabled Ignite! to lay off half of its 70 employees and outsource their jobs to Mexico.

Unilateral action by Israel to annex land in the West Bank would endanger US support for a proposed blueprint for the region, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has said.

“Israel is subject to the completion [of] a mapping process by a joint Israeli-American committee. Any unilateral action in advance of the completion of the committee process endangers the Plan & American recognition,” Friedman said, in a message posted on Twitter.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Saturday that his government had begun to draw up maps of land in the occupied West Bank, in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan. However, Judging by Friedman’s message, it appears that Washington has taken issue with being excluded from the process, and could potentially withdraw support for the plan if Israel proceeds alone.

The area being mapped includes all of Israel’s illegal settlements in the Jordan Valley. Palestinians view these lands as rightfully theirs, comprising part of a future state.

“The only map that can be accepted as the map of Palestine is the map of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital,” said Nabil Abu Rudeinah, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Palestinian outrage over the so-called ‘deal of the century’ has already led to violent incidents in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

Police break up protest over Fo Tan quarantine plan

Police on Sunday moved in to clear a crowd of Fo Tan residents who gathered to protest against the government's revival of a plan to use newly completed public housing estates for quarantine purposes.

The protest erupted after officials including Undersecretary for Health Chui Tak-yi met Sha Tin district councillors to discuss the use of the Chun Yeung Estate to house people who've been in contact with coronavirus patients.

The government said last month that it had put on hold work to prepare new public housing for quarantine purposes after fierce protests at an estate in Fanling, during which fires were started in one new building.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department is receiving information on former Vice President Joe Biden and his businessman son, Hunter Biden, from President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, a top Trump ally in the Senate said on Sunday.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham said Attorney General William Barr told him about the arrangement on Sunday morning and that Justice Department officials were evaluating Giuliani’s information to determine whether it is genuine.

“The Department of Justice is receiving information coming out of the Ukraine from Rudy. He (Barr) told me that they have created a process that Rudy could give information and they would see if it’s verified,” Graham told the CBS News program Face the Nation.

Justice Department officials were not immediately available for comment.

News of the arrangement surfaced days after the Senate acquitted Trump on impeachment charges that he abused his power by asking Ukraine to investigate the Bidens.

Trump had based his demands on unfounded allegations of corruption. House investigators alleged that Giuliani pursued damaging information about the Bidens in Ukraine as Trump’s personal lawyer.

Hunter Biden sat on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma while Joe Biden, now a Democratic presidential candidate, was vice president.

Two Republican senators - Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson - are also conducting an investigation of U.S. government records to determine whether there was a conflict of interest.

Graham said he spoke to Barr and Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr on Sunday, after Giuliani told an interviewer that he had unearthed key evidence from Ukraine.

“They told me: ‘Take very cautiously anything coming out of the Ukraine against anybody,’” Graham said.

“Any documents coming out of the Ukraine against any American, Republican or Democrat, need to be looked at by the intelligence services who have expertise - I don’t – because Russia is playing us all like a fiddle.”

Graham said he would refrain from his own probe of the Bidens and concentrate instead on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court’s decision to issue warrants that led to a federal investigation into allegations that Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the election.

“Here’s what I want to tell the president: I’m not going to be the Republican Christopher Steele,” Graham said.

Steele is the former British spy who produced a dossier on Trump that the FBI used in its Russia probe. Republicans have condemned the dossier as a sham document filled with Russian propaganda.

The family of road traffic victim Harry Dunn has called for a full public enquiry after a report that the US woman who fled the UK after hitting the teen with her car is a high-ranking CIA spy.

The Mail on Sunday reported that multiple sources, both in London and Washington, said that fugitive Anne Sacoolas had a CIA background. Her husband is also believed to be an intelligence officer and the new report suggests she even might be of a higher rank than he.

She reportedly already sent a letter to the UK Foreign Office, demanding to be told if the agency was aware about Sacoolas's involvement with the CIA.

The Foreign Office said that "Anne Sacoolas was notified to us as a spouse with no official role."

Sky News also reported she had a CIA background, citing their sources.

The adviser and spokesman for the family of Harry Dunn, Radd Seiger, has called for "a full public enquiry into who knew what and when in Government" and the "deplorable manner" the relatives of the deceased teen were treated.

Key Witness Told Mueller Team That Russia Collusion Evidence Found In Ukraine Was Fabricated

One of Robert Mueller’s pivotal trial witnesses told the special prosecutor’s team in spring 2018 that a key piece of Russia collusion evidence found in Ukraine known as the “black ledger” was fabricated, according to interviews and testimony.

The ledger document, which suddenly appeared in Kiev during the 2016 U.S. election, showed alleged cash payments from Russian-backed politicians in Ukraine to ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

“The ledger was completely made up,” cooperating witness and Manafort business partner Rick Gates told prosecutors and FBI agents, according to a written summary of an April 2018 special counsel’s interview.

In a brief interview with Just the News, Gates confirmed the information in the summary.

“The black ledger was a fabrication,” Gates said.

“It was never real, and this fact has since been proven true.”

Gates’ account is backed by several Ukrainian officials who stated in interviews dating to 2018 that the ledger was of suspicious origins and could not be corroborated.

If true, Gates’ account means the two key pieces of documentary evidence used by the media and FBI to drive the now-debunked Russia collusion narrative — the Steele dossier and the black ledger — were at best uncorroborated and at worst disinformation. His account also raises the possibility that someone fabricated the document in Ukraine in an effort to restart investigative efforts on Manafort’s consulting work or to meddle in the U.S. presidential election.

Much mystery has surrounded the black ledger, which was publicized by the New York Times and other U.S. news outlets in the summer of 2016 and forced Manafort out as one of Trump’s top campaign officials.

After gaining wide attention as purported evidence of Russian ties to the Trump campaign, the ledger was never introduced as evidence at Manafort’s 2018 trial or significantly analyzed in Mueller’s final 2019 report, which concluded that Trump did not collude with Russia to influence the 2016 election. No FBI 302 interview reports have been released either showing what the FBI concluded about the ledger.

Gates’ interview with the Mueller team now provides a potential clue as to why.

By April 2018, Gates had reached a plea deal to testify against Manafort in a criminal case that ultimately resulted in Manafort’s conviction on tax and illegal lobbying charges. As the day-to-day manager of Manafort’s political consulting and lobbying efforts for former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Gates handled Manafort’s operations and was deeply familiar with when and how payments were made and from whom.

During a debriefing with Mueller’s team on April 10, 2018, Gates was asked about the August 2016 New York Times article that first alerted the public to the existence of the black ledger and eventually led to Manafort’s downfall.

“The article was completely false,” Gates is quoted as telling Mueller’s team in a written summary of the interview created by some of the attendees.

“As you now know there were no cash payments. The payments were wired. The ledger was completely made up.”

Israel and Iran in Dead Heat Weapons Race

Israel is developing a laser weapons defense system that may end up neutralizing most of her airborne security threats.

The Iron Beam, which utilizes both ground based and air based platforms for a launch, was reported recently by the Israeli government to be in development and potentially ready to be tested later this year.

And it may be not a moment too soon.

After President Trump backed out of the Iran nuclear deal, which had been signed by his predecessor President Obama, he chose to use sanctions as a method to force Iran into compliance. Iran responded by announcing that it was ramping up its nuclear development program. It is generally thought that Iran should have a working nuclear weapons capability within a year.

Trump reportedly considered the Iran deal to be flawed and to facilitate Iran’s nuclear development, which ended up taking place any way.

The Iron Beam, also reported to be possibly ready within the same time frame, would address the nuclear weapons threat. Iran has repeatedly threatened Israel with annihilation and recent aggressions between the US and Iran had commentators worried that we were heading for a direct confrontation.

In fact, rather than making Israel more secure, the US’s repeated meddling in the region has resulted in far more vulnerability for the Jewish state.

Unlike President Obama, Trump has been touted as a friend to Israel. However, his acts of “friendship” have repeatedly resulted in more conflict between Israel and her neighbors. Trump’s decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem resulted in border clashes that left dozens dead. In a rather amazing act of revisionism, Trump recently denied that this violence took place. And his “Deal of the Century” peace plan has been roundly rejected by the Palestinians, who subsequently cut off diplomatic ties with the US and with Israel.

While the major media has continued to front the story that the US is a friend to Israel, the bald reality may be quite a bit different. While the US gives Israel over $3 billion a year in foreign aid, earmarked for purchasing weapons from the US, scrutiny of the reliability of some of these defensive weapons has resulted in concerns that the US is selling lemons to Israel.

The much touted Iron Dome may not work. David’s Sling, also a defensive weapons system, has been reported as also problematic. The final tier of Israel’s defense system, the Patriot missile, is junk.

The US’s complicity in Israel’s growing endangerment is cautiously being discussed by a number of commentators.

It appears that within one year, Israel’s race to construct an adequate defense system will bear fruit, or not. It appears that within the same time frame, Iran may finally be in a position to fulfill her promise to wipe Israel off the map. Either way, the US has been a silent partner in this unfolding saga.

Bridge Pharmaceuticals yesterday dedicated its recently completed Bridge Zhongguancun Preclinical Drug Development Laboratory I.

In attendance at the ceremony were: San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom; Deputy Mayor Beijing Municipal Office Hao Lu; Beijing Deputy Mayor Bo-Yuan Fan; US Embassy Senior Commercial Officer Craig Allen; Former Beijing Deputy Mayor Zhao-Guang Hu; Director of Beijing Municipal Industrial Development Bureau Lian-Yuan Cheng; Director of Beijing Municipal Science Technology Office Hai Feng; and Former San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordon.

This 7,800 square meter facility puts Bridge at the forefront of preclinical outsourcing to China and will be the first and only US level GLP and AAALAC designed facility in China. The Zhongguancun facility will house primates, rodents, canines, rabbits. Services will include: FDA compliant GLP toxicology, pharmacology, predictive PK/ADMET, safety pharmacology, formulation and other services. Through its Vital Bridge joint venture, Bridge has expert local partners in China that provide animal supplies from the largest and only US-franchised (Charles River and Marshall Farms) quality animal breeding facilities in China.

For Bridge, the opening of this facility marks the next phase in outsourcing preclinical drug development to Asia. By controlling its own facility in China, Bridge will have the capacity and expertise to provide FDA compliant preclinical drug development services to pharmaceutical and biotech companies throughout the world. This new facility positions Bridge as the leading preclinical CRO in China targeting US and EU biopharmaceutical companies.

Funding Secured For 1,000 Miles Of Border Wall, White House Officials Say

The Trump administration is shifting its border wall focus from procuring resources to breaking ground on new construction after securing funds for 1,000 miles of new wall along the southern border, White House officials tell the Daily Caller.

The fiscal year 2021 budget requests fewer funds for border wall construction than in previous years, but a senior White House official explained how the administration has “now shifted from securing funds to being able to build more wall.”

Acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan said in January he expects to meet President Donald Trump’s goal of erecting 450 miles of new border wall construction by the end of 2020, and the White House maintained that optimism Sunday.

“On the border, there’s great news to report,” the official told the Caller. “The president has kept his promise to secure the border. With funding available, the administration will build up to approximately 1,000 miles of border wall along the southwest border.”

“The 2021 budget request, which has increases for infrastructure, technology, and law enforcement personnel, is what’s required to gain operational control of the border.”

According to White House officials familiar with the fiscal year 2021 proposal, the budget request for Customs and Border Patrol jumped to $15.6 billion, up roughly 7 percent from last year’s enacted total. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also saw a significant budget bump, with a funding request just shy of $10 billion.

CBP border enforcement actions dropped for seven consecutive months to end 2019, a decrease of more than 70 percent from May’s high point, which prompted Trump to declare a humanitarian crisis at the border.

Officials added that the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security will provide $8.4 billion to wall construction.

The White House is set to unveil its full 2021 proposal this week, and acting Office of Management and Budget director Russ Vought will appear at a congressional hearing on the request this Wednesday.

Nigel Farage said there is “growing” concern in Washington over Boris Johnson’s decision to allow Chinese telecom giant Huawei the rights to work on Britain’s 5G infrastructure.

Following a meeting in the Oval Office, the leader of the Brexit Party said that many Republican senators and congressmen have “genuine” fears that allowing Huawei access to British 5G networks could jeopardize the security relationship between the two nations.

Mr Farage told The Telegraph that President Donald Trump’s official message is that “the UK must do what’s right for the UK” but he noted that the feeling in Washington is firmly against the move.

“I have picked up from speaking to some senators and congressmen this week a level of concern that does not appear to be going away. It is a genuine security concern,” Farage said.

“We believe in UK sovereignty. It is our choice to make. But it is, I have to say, one I’m very, very worried about, as I have been all the way through”, he added.

The British government has claimed it will constrain the role that Huawei plays in developing its 5G network, saying that the Chinese tech giant will be excluded from the “core” of the network and will only make up 35 per cent of the “periphery”.

The decision by Prime Minister Boris Johnson has not only sparked a backlash in Washington. A group of senior Conservative Party members have written a letter to Number 10 to “rule out” Huawei from its 5G plans.

The letter, which was signed by former party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith, Owen Paterson, David Davis, Damian Green, Tobias Ellwood, and Bob Seely called on Mr Johnson to “find a better solution”.

“We are seeking to identify a means by which we ensure that only trusted vendors are allowed as primary contractors into our critical national infrastructure” the letter said, per the BBC.

“Trusted vendors would be companies from countries that have fair market competition, rule of law, respect human rights, data privacy and non-coercive government agencies”, it continued.

Sir Iain Duncan Smith warned against trusting a company with alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party, saying that there should be “zero” involvement from Huawei and adding that the situation is “simply not manageable to have an organisation like that inside your important network”.

“You have an organisation from a country that is an aggressor in terms of cyber warfare and a company that is clearly totally and utterly in the hands of the Chinese government who demand absolute obedience on these matters”, Sir Ian warned.

Mexican Cops Re-Arrest Cartel Lord Following Judge’s Release

A feared cartel lord in Mexico City came close to walking out of prison after a federal judge ordered his release. The judge ruled his recent drug trafficking arrest was illegal in nature. However, Mexico City Police officers were waiting for him outside to re-arrest him on kidnapping charges.

Mexico City Police officers and prosecutors set up an operation on Saturday afternoon outside the Altiplano Federal Prison. Police arrested Oscar Andres “El Lunares” Flores, on a kidnapping charge as he walked out of the detention center. Flores is the current leader of the Union de Tepito, a drug cartel that controls all of the criminal activity in most parts of Mexico City.

A video shared by citizen journalists on social media captured the moment when a female officer reads the new charge against Flores and takes him into custody.

The new arrest came just hours after Mexican federal judge Beatriz Moguel ordered his release. The judge also order the release of two of his henchmen claiming that their arrest was illegal in nature.

The federal judge claimed there were numerous inconsistencies with the arrest reports filed by Mexican authorities and dismissed the case, Mexico’s La Silla Rota reported. Mexican authorities initially arrested Flores on January 31 during a law enforcement operation. Police transported him to Altiplano in connection with various ongoing investigations.

In October, Mexican authorities carried out a series of raids in the suburb of Tepito where they discovered various narco-tunnels, a witchcraft altar, a drug production kitchen, and multiple weapons — including a rocket launcher, Breitbart Texas reported. Flores was the main target behind those raids, however, he managed to escape before authorities arrived. At the time police officers arrested 31 individuals, however days later another judge in Mexico ordered the release of 27 of those and eventually, all the suspects walked out of prison. The arguments by Judge Felipe de Jesus Delgadillo Padierna were that authorities had fabricated the evidence against the various members of the Union de Tepito Cartel, Breitbart Texas reported at the time.

Waterlogged parts of NSW are suffering their worst floods in years with heavy rains and damaging winds forecast to again lash the state.

Communities along the Hawkesbury and Georges rivers have been ordered to evacuate ahead of surging floodwaters forecast to peak at their highest level in decades.

The weather has caused major disruptions to Sydney’s public transport networks, while parched dams have swollen to their highest levels in years.

Gary Sinise Wins Congressional Medal of Honor Society Award for Work with Veterans

Actor Gary Sinise was honored Thursday by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society for his work supporting America’s wounded warriors.

During a ceremony at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, he was awarded the Patriot Award, the highest honor given out by the organization, according to KABC.

In 2004, Sinise formed the Lt. Dan Band, which plays for active-duty troops and veteran. In 2011, he established the Gary Sinise Foundation, which has adapted 70 smart homes for veterans who suffered crippling wounds in the service of their nation.

Sinise’s role as Lt. Dan in the movie “Forrest Gump” was a pivotal moment in his life, he said in an interview with the USO.

“[W]hen you see the story of Lt. Dan, that’s a hopeful story for our … wounded veterans, because he’s a wounded combat veteran and he is also able to be successful in life,” Sinise said. “He’s married at the end and he’s standing up on new legs. You never thought you’d see him out of the wheelchair.”

“I could not have foreseen that the Lt. Dan character would be a character that has a life of its own beyond the movie,” he said. “I think part of that is because, when I started working with the USO and visiting our hospitals and meeting this entire new generation of amputees, the character and its relation to me became sort of a conversation piece with our wounded in the hospitals. It’s been a blessing and a benefit to be able to have this association with wounded in our military community.”

Sinise said that the aftermath of Sept. 11 also changed him, according to Time.

“Quite frankly, if we hadn’t been attacked on Sept. 11, and we didn’t deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan, and our people didn’t start getting hurt and killed, I don’t know what I’d be doing right now,” he said. “After we were attacked and [I saw] those images of what happened that day, and then our troops were deployed and getting hurt and killed, something clicked in me, and I just wanted to do something.”

Sinise’s activities span the country.

Last month, retired Army Maj. Jeremy Haynes and his family moved into a new smart home in Virginia that has doorways made to accommodate the wheelchair he needs because he was left paralyzed after being shot in Afghanistan.

Sinise and his foundation helped build the house, according to WJLA.

“The house that stands before us is a small symbol of that gratitude and a deep respect from a grateful nation,” Sinise said in a recording that welcomed Haynes to his new home.

Top Democrat Strategist James Carville On 2020 Elections: ‘We’re Losing Our Damn Minds’, People ‘Don’t Want To Hear This S**t’

James Carville, a former top adviser to President Clinton, laid out a scathing critique of his party, arguing that it drifted way too far to the left and was on the way to failure as a result of pushing extreme policy ideas.

“We just had an election in 2018. We did great. We talked about everything we needed to talk about and we won,” he said in a Vox interview published on Friday. “And now it’s like we’re losing our damn minds. Someone’s got to step their game up here.”

Carville added that he considered himself a “liberal” rather than a centrist — but Democrats went too far even for him.

“They’ve tacked off the damn radar screen,” he said when asked if the party moved too far left.

His comments came just after another interview in which he said he was “scared to death” after Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., netted a large portion of the vote in Iowa’s caucuses.

According to Carville, both Sanders and Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., were pushing “stupid” ideas about higher education.

“Democrats talking about free college tuition or debt forgiveness. I’m not here to debate the idea. What I can tell you is that people all over this country worked their way through school, sent their kids to school, paid off student loans. They don’t want to hear this s–t. And you saw Warren confronted by an angry voter over this. It’s just not a winning message,” he said.

Timm was training to be a sound engineer and was affiliated with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. He had recently joined the union.

Susan Phillips, president of I.A.T.S.E. Local 115, told First Coast News that Timm had used the name William when he started with the union. Phillips told the news station Timm was working for ASM Global, which was formerly known as SMG. Phillips told First Coast News they were “just horrified” to learn about Timm’s arrest and said he has been suspended from the union and will not be granted membership in the future.

Gregory Timm made his first court appearance on Sunday, February 9 and was ordered held on $500,000 bail, according to First Coast News.

Timm faces two counts of aggravated assault on a person over the age of 65, which is a second-degree felony. If convicted, Timm could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison on each count. On the first-degree misdemeanor criminal mischief charge, which is for damage of more than $200 but less than $1,000, Timm faces up to a year in jail.

Turkey warns of ‘Plan B’ amid Syria’s anti-terror operation in Idlib

Turkey says it will change tack in northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, where an intensified anti-terror operation is underway by Syrian army against foreign-backed militant outfits, if the deal reached with Russia is violated.

Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said, in an interview with the Hurriyet daily that Ankara has made alternative plans for Idlib province if the agreement reached with Russia continues to be violated.

Based on a 2018 deal with Russia, Turkey set up 12 observation posts in Idlib, but Turkish security sources said this week three of them are now being encircled by the Syrian government forces.

"If the agreement continues to be violated, we have Plan B and Plan C," Akar said, adding that, “We on every occasion say do not force us, otherwise our Plan B and Plan C are ready”.

The Turkish defense minister warned that "If the Syrian forces are not withdrawn by the end of February, we will take action."

Akar claimed that "Our primary goal is to prevent migration and humanitarian tragedy. We are working to establish a ceasefire as soon as possible and stop the bloodshed."

Since Friday, Ankara has sent hundreds of military vehicles into Idlib province, after Syrian government forces took control of a strategic town close to the provincial capital.

The UK-based so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 1,240 Turkish military vehicles crossed into Idlib in the last week, along with 5,000 soldiers.

Idlib is in the last major enclave of the foreign-backed terrorists fighting against the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Ricky Gervais Heckles Oscars: ‘I Can’t Wait to Hear Your Inspirational Speeches About Equality’

Actor-comedian Ricky Gervais viciously trolled Hollywood celebrities just hours ahead of Sunday’s Academy Awards, preemptively deflating their self-important acceptance speeches in a series of humorous tweets.

Ricky Gervais took the stars to task for their progressive views on migrant workers, noting that many celebrities employ migrants in their homes to perform menial and backbreaking work.

The British comedian also mocked the sex scandals that have consumed the entertainment industry during the last three years.

Gervais’s Oscars trolling was in response to a hypothetical question posed to him on Twitter asking what jokes he would make if he were hosting the Oscars tonight.

This year’s Academy Awards will be hostless, marking the second year in a row that the show’s organizers have opted to do away with a host after Kevin Hart stepped down last year following the mainstream media’s efforts to destroy his career by digging up his old tweets.

Viewership of the Oscars has been on a downward trajectory as viewers tire of Hollywood’s political hectoring and non-stop bashing of President Donald Trump.

Ratings have fallen since 2014’s high of 43.7 million viewers. In 2018, the show only managed to draw an audience of 26.5 million, its biggest yearly decline.

In January, Gervais hosted the Golden Globes, ripping decorum to shreds by cracking jokes about virtue signaling celebrities, Apple sweatshops, and Harvey Weinstein.

The French consumer watchdog has fined Apple €25 million euro ($49 million) for its lack of transparency in deliberately slowing down older devices. The iPhone-maker has previously admitted to the practice, and apologised for not informing customers.

If you hear an actor say they’re “humbled” during an acceptance speech at Sunday’s Academy Awards celebration, you can officially call out the BS. Because in addition to being nominated for a gold-plated trophy on Hollywood’s biggest night, all the big names in the acting and director categories receive a swag bag at the event worth $215K. And its contents challenge all reason.

The promotional present from marketing company Distinctive Assets is called the “Everybody Wins” bag and this is the 18th year in a row it’s being given out to Oscar nominees. In previous years, movie stars and filmmakers were given expensive vibrators, luxury train rides, and so forth and this year is just as insane.

According to USA Today, they will receive a 24K gold bath bomb, a five-night stay in Waikiki, a 12-day cruise for two on a luxury yacht, and even a urine collection and analysis system. What… why? More perks of getting nominated for an Oscar include organic cotton bust support tape, a phone consultation with a life coach, one-year membership to a matchmaking agency, cannabis-infused chocolate, a vape pen with 24K gold finish, handmade luxury eyelashes, a pill to give relief from monthly breast pain', a ton of alcohol, and more.

And we wonder why celebrities look so unattainably attractive? They get free vacations and a ton of perks like this! Now, the only thing is these items are taxable. Someone needs to start a charity to give these swag bags away. Now, this just reminds me of when Saoirse Ronan went on Ellen to give away some of her “swag” from the Golden Globes when she presented at the 2019 ceremony. She was really holding out! She must have received something of the sort when she was nominated for Lady Bird, Brooklyn, and Atonement before nabbing her fourth nomination for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. Check it out:

Really, a water bottle? Napkins? Tulips? The Ellen audience was played. But, who knows? Are the actors and directors forced to take these crazy items? Is it the kind of thing where you stuff it in a closet and don’t even look at the 24K gold bath bomb just waiting to be soaked? The companies involved apparently pay at least $4,000 to be included in the “Everyone Wins” swag bag. The price to have your product or experience used by an influential celebrity, I guess!

This year’s Oscars features a ton of films being recognized, including frontrunners such as 1917, Joker, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. There will not be a host again this year, which nine-time emcee Billy Crystal thinks is a problem. On the road to the Oscars, there’s certainly been talk of a lack of diversity among the nominees and snubs such as Adam Sandler’s performance in Uncut Gems had cinephiles talking.

New Study Adds to Evidence of Diabetes Drug Link to Heart Problems

A new study published by The BMJ adds to evidence that rosiglitazone – a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes – is associated with an increased risk of heart problems, especially heart failure.

This study is the most comprehensive evaluation of the cardiovascular risk of rosiglitazone ever done.

Rosiglitazone belongs to a class of drugs called thiazolidinediones. It helps control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, but it can also increase the risk of serious heart problems. This has led to suspension of the drug in Europe and previous restrictions on its use in the United States.

However, since 2007, studies have reported conflicting findings about whether rosiglitazone increases the risk of heart attacks. But these studies didn’t have access to the raw data, also known as individual patient level data (IPD), from clinical trials and mostly relied on summary level data (e.g. results reported in publications and clinical trial registries), which are not as reliable when estimating the true safety profile of drugs.

Recent efforts by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – the maker of rosiglitazone – to make IPD available to external investigators, prompted a team of US researchers to re-analyse the data and clarify some of the uncertainties about rosiglitazone’s cardiovascular risk.

They analysed the results of more than 130 trials involving over 48,000 adult patients that compared rosiglitazone with any control for at least 24 weeks. IPD were available for 33 trials, which included 21156 patients; the remaining trials only had summary level data available.

When the researchers analysed the IPD from trials made available by GSK, they found rosiglitazone was associated with a 33% increased risk of a composite cardiovascular event (heart attack, heart failure, cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular related death) compared with controls. This was estimated from the 274 events among 11,837 rosiglitazone patients and 219 events among 9,319 control patients.

When examining cardiovascular events independently, the analyses of the 33 GSK trials with IPD resulted in higher estimates of the risk of heart attacks than the analyses of trials with IPD and summary level data.

These findings highlight the potential for different results derived from different data sources, and demonstrate the need for greater clinical trial transparency and data sharing to accurately assess the safety of drugs, say the researchers.

“Our study suggests that when evaluating drug safety and performing meta-analyses focused on safety, IPD might be necessary to accurately classify all adverse events,” they write. “By including these data in research, patients, clinicians, and researchers would be able to make more informed decisions about the safety of interventions.”

They add: “Our study highlights the need for independent evidence assessment to promote transparency and ensure confidence in approved therapeutics, and postmarket surveillance that tracks known and unknown risks and benefits.”

If Ukraine becomes a flashpoint for World War III with Russia, the American people might rue the day that their government pressed for the 2014 overthrow of Ukraine’s allegedly corrupt (though elected) president in favor of a coup regime led by Ukrainian lawmakers who now report amassing, on average, more than $1 million each, much of it as cash.

The New York Times, which served as virtually a press agent for the coup in February 2014, took note of this apparent corruption among the U.S.-favored post-coup officials, albeit deep inside a story that itself was deep inside the newspaper (page A8). The lead angle was a bemused observation that Ukraine’s officialdom lacked faith in the country’s own banks (thus explaining why so much cash).

Yet, Ukraine is a country beset by widespread poverty, made worse by the post-coup neoliberal “reforms” slashing pensions, making old people work longer and reducing heating subsidies for common citizens. The average Ukrainian salary is only $214 a month.

So, an inquiring mind might wonder how – in the face of all that hardship – the post-coup officials did so well for themselves, but Times’ correspondent Andrew E. Kramer treads lightly on the possibility that these officials were at least as corrupt, if not more so, than the elected government that the U.S. helped overthrow. Elected President Viktor Yanukovych had been excoriated for a lavish lifestyle because he had a sauna in his residence.

Kramer’s article on Wednesday tried to explain the bundles of cash as a sign that “many of the lawmakers and officials responsible for inspiring public trust in Ukraine’s economic and banking institutions have little faith that their own wealth would be safe in the country’s banks, according to recently mandated financial disclosures. …

“Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, for example, declared over one million dollars in savings in cash — $870,000 and 460,000 euros — apparently shunning Ukraine’s ever-wobbly banking system. The top official in charge of the country’s banks, Valeriya Gontareva, who is responsible for stabilizing the national currency, the hryvnia, maintains most of her money in American dollars — $1.8 million.

“A tally of the declarations filed by most of Parliament’s 450 members compiled by one analyst, Andriy Gerus, found that the lawmakers collectively held $482 million in ‘monetary assets,’ of which $36 million was kept as cold, hard cash. …

“Some politicians seem to have approached the declaration as a sort of amnesty, revealing everything they have earned from decades of crooked dealings, in an effort to come clean. … One minister reported a wine collection with bottles worth thousands of dollars each. Another official declared ownership of a church. Yet another claimed a ticket to outer space with Virgin Galactic. …

“Another theory making the rounds in Kiev — where people generally acknowledge the inventive, venal genius of their politicians — suggests that the public servants are padding their declarations,” so they can hide future bribes within their reported cash holdings and thus offer plausible excuses for luxury cars and expensive jewelry.

Bernie Sanders says he won’t release post-heart attack medical records

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday balked at releasing medical records in the wake of a heart attack that briefly took him off the campaign trail last fall — insisting that he is “in good health.”

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Democratic presidential hopeful said his campaign has “cardiologists who are confirming that I am in good health.”

“We have released as much documentation, I think, as any other candidate,” said Sanders, 78.

“But no other candidate has had a heart attack,” host Chuck Todd shot back.

“Yeah, no other candidate is doing four or five events a day running all over the country,” Sanders replied.

Todd had noted that in a Sept. 14 interview — prior to the heart attack in October — Sanders promised to release his medical records “before the first votes are cast.”

“The American people have a right to know whether the person they’re going to be voting for for president is healthy,” Sanders said at the time. “And we will certainly release our medical records before the primary.”

But he was singing a different tune Sunday, two days before the New Hampshire primary.

“I mean, you can start releasing medical records and it never ends,” he told the host. “We’ve released a substantive part — all of our background. We have doctors who have, cardiologists confirming that I am in good health. I am in good health.”

Sanders said doctors recommended he do more walking and get more sleep.

“My guess is winning will help you sleep a little bit better?” Todd asked.

“Winning will make me sleep a lot better and I think we’re going to do just that,” Sanders said.

Ironically, passage of the law requiring the disclosures of what appears to be widespread corruption among Kiev’s officials unlocked millions of euros in new aid money from the European Union that then flowed to the same apparently corrupt officials.

Indeed, some business people operating in Ukraine have complained that the corruption has grown worse since Yanukovych was overthrown.

Yet, only occasionally has that reality been allowed to peek through in the mainstream U.S. media, which prefers to deny that any “coup” occurred, to blame Russia for all of Ukraine’s problems, and to praise the post-coup “reforms” which targeted pensions, heating subsidies and other social programs for average citizens.

One of the rare deviations from the happy talk appeared in The Wall Street Journal on Jan. 1, 2016, observing that “most Ukrainians say the revolution’s promise to replace rule by thieves with the rule of law has fallen short and the government acknowledges that there is still much to be done.”

Actually, the numbers suggested something even worse. More and more Ukrainians rated corruption as a major problem facing the nation, including a majority of 53 percent in September 2015, up from 28 percent in September 2014, according to polls by International Foundation for Electoral Systems.

So, as the hard lives of most Ukrainians got harder, the elites continued to skim off whatever cream was left, including access to billions of dollars in the West’s foreign assistance that has kept the economy afloat.

There was, for instance, the case of Finance Minister Natalie Jaresko, who was regarded by many pundits as the face of Ukraine’s reform before departing last April after losing out in a power struggle.

Yet, Jaresko was hardly a paragon of reform. Prior to getting instant Ukrainian citizenship and becoming Finance Minister in December 2014, she was a former U.S. diplomat who had been entrusted to run a $150 million U.S.-taxpayer-funded program to help jump-start an investment economy in Ukraine and Moldova.

Jaresko’s compensation was capped at $150,000 a year, a salary that many Americans – let alone Ukrainians – would envy, but it was not enough for her. So, she engaged in a variety of maneuvers to evade the cap and enrich herself by claiming millions of dollars in bonuses and fees.

Ultimately, Jaresko was collecting more than $2 million a year after she shifted management of the Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF) to her own private company, Horizon Capital, and arranged to get lucrative bonuses when selling off investments, even as the overall WNISEF fund was losing money, according to official records.

For instance, Jaresko collected $1.77 million in bonuses in 2013, according to a WNISEF filing with the Internal Revenue Service. In her financial disclosure forms with the Ukrainian government, she reported earning $2.66 million in 2013 and $2.05 million in 2014, thus amassing a sizeable personal fortune while investing U.S. taxpayers’ money supposedly to benefit the Ukrainian people.

It didn’t matter that WNISEF continued to hemorrhage money, shrinking from its original $150 million to $89.8 million in the 2013 tax year, according to the IRS filing. WNISEF reported that the bonuses to Jaresko and other corporate officers were based on “successful” exits from some investments even if the overall fund was losing money.

Though Jaresko’s enrichment schemes were documented by IRS and other official filings, the mainstream U.S. media turned a blind eye to this history, all the better to pretend that Ukraine’s “reform” process was in good hands. [See Consortiumnews.com’s “How Ukraine’s Finance Minister Got Rich.”]

Biden’s Appeal

Worried about the continued corruption, Vice President Joe Biden, who took a personal interest in Ukraine, lectured Ukraine’s parliament on the need to end cronyism.

But Biden had his own Ukraine cronyism problem because three months after the U.S.-backed overthrow of the Yanukovych government Ukraine’s largest private gas firm, Burisma Holdings, appointed his son, Hunter Biden, to its board of directors.

Burisma a shadowy Cyprus-based company also lined up well-connected lobbyists, some with ties to Secretary of State John Kerry, including Kerry’s former Senate chief of staff David Leiter, according to lobbying disclosures.

As Time magazine reported, “Leiter’s involvement in the firm rounds out a power-packed team of politically-connected Americans that also includes a second new board member, Devon Archer, a Democratic bundler and former adviser to John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign. Both Archer and Hunter Biden have worked as business partners with Kerry’s son-in-law, Christopher Heinz, the founding partner of Rosemont Capital, a private-equity company.”

According to investigative journalism inside Ukraine, the ownership of Burisma has been traced to Privat Bank, controlled by the thuggish billionaire oligarch Ihor Kolomoysky, who was appointed by the U.S.-backed “reform” regime to be governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a south-central province of Ukraine (though Kolomoisky was eventually ousted from that post in a power struggle over control of UkrTransNafta, Ukraine’s state-owned oil pipeline operator).

In a speech to Ukraine’s parliament in December 2015, Biden hailed the sacrifice of the 100 or so protesters who died during the Maidan putsch in February 2014, which ousted Yanukovych, referring to the dead by their laudatory name “The Heavenly Hundred.”

But Biden made no heavenly references to the estimated 10,000 people, mostly ethnic Russians, who have been slaughtered in the U.S.-encouraged “Anti-Terror Operation” waged by the coup regime against eastern Ukrainians who resisted Yanukovych’s violent ouster. Nor did Biden take note that some of the Heavenly Hundred were street fighters for neo-Nazi and other far-right nationalist organizations.

But after making his sugary references to The Heavenly Hundred, Biden delivered his bitter medicine, an appeal for the parliament to continue implementing International Monetary Fund “reforms,” including demands that old people work longer into their old age.

Biden said, “For Ukraine to continue to make progress and to keep the support of the international community you have to do more, as well. The big part of moving forward with your IMF program — it requires difficult reforms. And they are difficult.

“Let me say parenthetically here, all the experts from our State Department and all the think tanks, and they come and tell you, that you know what you should do is you should deal with pensions. You should deal with — as if it’s easy to do. Hell, we’re having trouble in America dealing with it. We’re having trouble. To vote to raise the pension age is to write your political obituary in many places.

“Don’t misunderstand that those of us who serve in other democratic institutions don’t understand how hard the conditions are, how difficult it is to cast some of the votes to meet the obligations committed to under the IMF. It requires sacrifices that might not be politically expedient or popular. But they’re critical to putting Ukraine on the path to a future that is economically secure. And I urge you to stay the course as hard as it is. Ukraine needs a budget that’s consistent with your IMF commitments.”

However, as tough as it might have been for Ukraine’s parliament to slash pensions, reduce heating subsidies and force the elderly to work longer, that political sacrifice did not appear to extend to the officials making financial sacrifices themselves.

Exclusive: Ukraine’s Finance Minister Natalie Jaresko collected at least $1.77 million in bonuses from a U.S.-taxpayer-funded investment project that she ran even as it was losing money, a sign that her image as a paragon of public-interest “reform” may not be all that it’s cracked up to be, reports Robert Parry.

Before becoming Ukraine’s Finance Minister last December, Natalie Jaresko collected $1.77 million in bonuses from a U.S.-taxpayer-financed investment fund where her annual compensation was supposed to be limited to $150,000, according to financial documents filed with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service this year.

The near 12-fold discrepancy between the compensation ceiling and Jaresko’s bonuses, paid in 2013, was justified in the IRS filing from the Jaresko-led Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF) by drawing a distinction between getting paid directly from the $150 million U.S. government grant that created the fund and the money from the fund’s “investment sales proceeds,” which were treated as fair game for extracting bonuses far beyond the prescribed compensation level.

Using this supposed loophole, Jaresko and some of her associates enriched themselves by claiming money generated from U.S. taxpayers’ dollars while avoiding any personal financial risks. She and other WNISEF officers collected the bonuses from what they deemed “profitable” exits from some investments even if the overall fund was losing money and shrinking, as it apparently was in recent years.

According to WNISEF’s filing for the 2013 tax year, submitted to the IRS on Aug. 11, 2015, the value of the investment fund had shrunk from $150 million at its start to $93.9 million in the fund’s 2012 tax year and to $89.8 million in the 2013 tax year. (WNISEF’s tax years end on Sept. 30.)

So, Jaresko’s arrangement was something like taking someone else’s money to a roulette table, placing it on black, and claiming a share of the winnings if the ball stopped on black. However, if the ball landed on red, then the someone else absorbed the loss, except in this case the winners were Jaresko and her associates and the losers were the American taxpayers.

The purpose cited by the U.S. Congress in starting the non-profit WNISEF with $150 million in the 1990s was to help jumpstart an investment economy in Ukraine and Moldova for the benefit of the people of those countries. The project was administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which selected Jaresko, a former U.S. diplomat of Ukrainian heritage, to run the project.

Last December, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko named Jaresko Finance Minister after awarding her instant Ukrainian citizenship. At that point, she quit WNISEF and has since become the face of Ukrainian “reform,” representing the U.S.-backed government at international banking events at Davos, Switzerland, and elsewhere while appealing for billions of dollars in Western financial aid which she oversees.

Thus, Jaresko’s standards for handling public moneys are relevant to judging whether the new regime is just a reshuffling of who gets to plunder Ukraine or a serious effort at reform. The overthrow of the previous Ukrainian government of President Viktor Yanukovych was largely justified in February 2014 because of allegations about corruption. The new regime has presented itself as committed to reform, even though some outside observers contend that corruption is as bad or worse than under the old government.

Self-Interest v. Public Interest

There is also the question of whether Jaresko is more interested in getting rich than in serving the people of Ukraine. As WNISEF’s chief executive officer, Jaresko seemed to grow dissatisfied with her $150,000 salary. For instance, in 2004, she earned more than double the prescribed amount, paid $383,259 along with $67,415 in expenses, according to WNISEF’s IRS filing for that year.

According to audit documents that I obtained from USAID, an “Expense Analysis” for 2004 showed $1,282,782 being paid out as “Exit-based incentive expense-equity incentive plan” and another $478,195 being paid for “Exit-based incentive expense-financial participation rights.” That suggested that Jaresko was already claiming bonuses from WNISEF’s investments (bought with U.S. taxpayers’ money) and sold during 2004.

In 2006, Jaresko’s compensation for her work with WNISEF was removed from public disclosure altogether after she co-founded two related entities Horizon Capital Associates (HCA) to manage WNISEF’s investments (and collect around $1 million a year in fees) and Emerging Europe Growth Fund (EEGF), a private entity to collaborate with WNISEF on investment deals.

Jaresko formed HCA and EEGF with two other WNISEF officers, Mark Iwashko and Lenna Koszarny. They also started a third firm, Horizon Capital Advisors, which “serves as a sub-advisor to the Investment Manager, HCA,” according to WNISEF’s IRS filing for 2006.

According to the USAID’s expense analyses for 2004-06, the taxpayer-financed WNISEF spent $1,049,987 to establish EEGF as a privately owned investment fund for Jaresko and her colleagues. USAID apparently found nothing suspicious about these tangled business relationships despite the potential conflicts of interest involving Jaresko, the other WNISEF officers and their affiliated companies.

For instance, WNISEF’s 2012 annual report devoted two pages to “related party transactions,” including the management fees to Jaresko’s Horizon Capital ($1,037,603 in 2011 and $1,023,689 in 2012) and WNISEF’s co-investments in projects with the EEGF. Though the IRS forms have a line for earnings from “related organizations,” WNISEF listed nothing, apparently treating compensation from Horizon Capital and EEGF as “unrelated” for the purposes of reporting compensation for Jaresko and other officers.

So, the scale of how much Jaresko was making from her association with WNISEF was unclear until last week when the IRS released WNISEF’s 2013 tax filing of Aug. 11, 2015, in response to a request from Consortiumnews.com. Though the filing still did not disclose all of Jaresko’s WNISEF-related compensation, it did list her $1.77 million share of the $4.5 million in bonuses awarded to her and two other WNISEF officers, Iwashko and Koszarny.

WNISEF filings also said the bonuses were paid regardless of whether the overall fund was making money, noting that this “compensation was not contingent on revenues or net earnings, but rather on a profitable exit of a portfolio company that exceeds the baseline value set by the board of directors and approved by USAID” with Jaresko also serving as a director on the board responsible for setting those baseline values.

Though compensation for Jaresko and other officers was shifted outside public view after 2006 as their pay was moved to the affiliated entities the 2006 IRS filing said: “It should be noted that as long as HCA earns a management fee from WNISEF, HCA and HCAD [the two Horizon Capital entities] must ensure that a salary cap of $150,000 is adhered to for the proportion of salary attributable to WNISEF funds managed relative to aggregate funds under management.”

Audit Gaps

KPMG auditors, who reviewed WNISEF finances, also took a narrow view of how to define income for Jaresko and other officers, only confirming that no “salary” exceeded $150,000, apparently not looking at bonuses and other forms of compensation. Neither USAID officials nor Jaresko responded to specific questions about WNISEF’s possible conflicts of interest, how much money Jaresko made from her involvement with WNISEF and its connected companies, and whether she had fully complied with IRS reporting requirements.

After Jaresko’s appointment as Finance Minister, and her resignation from WNISEF, I reviewed WNISEF’s available public records and detected a pattern of insider dealings and enrichment benefiting Jaresko and her colleagues. That prompted me in February to file a Freedom of Information Act request for USAID’s audits of the investment fund.

Though the relevant records were identified by June, USAID dragged its feet on releasing the 34 pages to me until Aug. 28 when the agency claimed nothing was being withheld, saying “all 34 pages are releasable in their entirety.” However, when I examined the documents, it became clear that a number of pages were missing from the financial records, including a total of three years of “expense analysis” in three-, six- and nine-month gaps since 2007.

Part of KPMG’s “Independent Auditors’ Report” for 2013 and 2014 was also missing. The report stated that “except as discussed in the third paragraph below, we conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America,” accountant-speak that suggests that “the third paragraph below” would reveal some factor that did not comply with generally accepted accounting principles (or GAAP).

But three paragraphs below was only white space and there was no next page in what USAID released. After I pointed out the discrepancies to USAID on Aug. 31, I was told on Sept. 15 that “we are in the process of locating documents to address your concern. We expect a response from the bureau and/or mission by Monday, September 28, 2015.”

After the Sept. 28 deadline passed, I contacted USAID again and was told on Oct. 2 that officials were “still working with the respective mission to obtain the missing documents.” On Oct. 22, USAID sent me one additional page from KPMG’s audit report stating that its review of WNISEF’s books lacked “an external quality control review by an unaffiliated audit organization” as required by the U.S. government’s auditing standards because no such program is offered in Ukraine. Other pages are still missing.

An earlier effort by Jaresko’s ex-husband Ihor Figlus to blow the whistle on what he considered improper business practices related to WNISEF was met by disinterest inside USAID, according to Figlus, and then led to Jaresko suing him in a Delaware court in 2012, using a confidentiality clause to silence Figlus and getting a court order to redact references to the abuses he was trying to expose.

Figlus’s complaints related to what he saw as improper loans that Jaresko had taken from Horizon Capital Associates to buy and expand her stake in EEGF, the privately held follow-on fund to WNISEF. After Figlus discussed this issue with a Ukrainian journalist, Jaresko sent her lawyers to court to silence him and, according to his lawyer, bankrupt him.

The filings in Delaware’s Chancery Court are remarkable not only because Jaresko succeeded in getting the Court to gag her ex-husband through enforcement of a non-disclosure agreement but the Court agreed to redact nearly all the business details, even the confidentiality language at the center of the case. Little Fuzhou

Little Fuzhou (Chinese: 小福州; pinyin: Xiǎo Fúzhōu; Foochow Romanized: Siēu-hók-ciŭ), or Fuzhou Town (Chinese: 福州埠; pinyin: Fúzhōu Bù; Foochow Romanized: Hók-ciŭ-pú), is a neighborhood in the Two Bridges and Lower East Side areas of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Starting in the 1980s and especially in the 1990s, the neighborhood became a prime destination for immigrants from Fuzhou, Fujian, China. Manhattan's Little Fuzhou is centered on East Broadway. However, since the 2000s, Chinatown in the neighborhood of Sunset Park became New York City's new primary destination for the Fuzhou immigrants, surpassing the original enclave in Manhattan. Today, the most known recent gangs on East Broadway are now from Fuzhou, Fujian of China since this street is now the main gathering center for Fuzhou immigrants. The Fuzhou gangs that are known are the Fuk Ching, the Snakehead (gang), which are well known to smuggle illegal immigrants from Fuzhou to the United States and other countries and the Tung On Gang.

The Tung On gang was established between the 1980s–90s on East Broadway where they ran a gambling parlor. Parallel to the Cantonese Tong Gangs that had dominated the long-established Cantonese community in the western section of Chinatown, the Fuzhou gangs were the same for the Fuzhou community that was emerging in the 1990s, which made Manhattan's Chinatown expand past its original traditional borderlines further east onto the Lower East Side. A man named Alan Man Sin Lau, the leader of the Fukien American Association, gained a status like Benny Ong did with the Cantonese.

The Fuk Ching gang members are often the workers of the Snakehead gang where they would be the ones to collect money from the illegal Fuzhou immigrants who owed money to the Snakeheads, which they had borrowed to come over to the United States. Sometimes, the Fuk Ching gang members would hold the migrants hostage and even violently beat them until they paid up the loans they owed.

Although the Fuzhou Gangs are more recent than the Cantonese gangs in Chinatown, they have been around as early as the 1980s prior to the time when the Cantonese Freemasons gang were attempting to claim East Broadway as its own territories, which fell apart after three Freemason gang members were killed in gang violence.[78][79][80]

How a Betrayal Snagged a Chinese Gang Leader

Guo Liang Chi thought he was talking to a friend when he described how he had ordered the murder of two of his trusted lieutenants in Chinatown last January. "Do it," he said, according to Federal transcripts of a secretly taped conversation. "Do a clean job."

Speaking by telephone in February from a hiding place in China, he recounted how he had given the command, and explained why they had to die - they had challenged him for a heftier cut of the huge profits their gang was earning from smuggling Chinese immigrants. The brutal simplicity of that execution order was just one of the elements about life within a violent Chinatown gang that emerged yesterday as Federal authorities, after more than two years of investigation, unveiled what they described as conclusive evidence that will finally put Mr. Guo, the leader of the Fuk Ching gang, away for life. The smoking gun, described in the Federal complaint against Mr. Guo, is a taped conversation in February between the gang leader and a confidential informer. Mr. Guo was already in Fujian Province in China, where he fled in January after the killing.

Mr. Guo was arrested in a restaurant in Hong Kong on Friday, and the charges, unsealed in Federal court yesterday, were for murder and conspiracy to murder. Although Mr. Guo had become the F.B.I.'s most wanted Asian gang leader for his role in smuggling human cargo, they wanted to nail him on a murder charge first. It is a charge that would be easier to prove and would carry a longer sentence.

Several hours before dawn on June 6, 1993, two Park Service police officers were patrolling the road next to Jacob Riis Park, a long stretch of beach on the Rockaway peninsula, in Queens, when they were startled by two Asian men flagging them down. As the officers got out of their car, they heard the sound of screams coming from the beach. The moon was full, and about a hundred yards offshore the officers saw a hundred-and-fifty-foot tramp steamer that had run aground. The ship’s deck was crowded with people, and, as the officers watched, men and women jumped over the side, falling twenty feet into the surging waves below. Dozens of figures bobbed in the water, some managing to clamber ashore, others flailing wildly, apparently unable to swim. The officers radioed for backup.

The ship’s name, stencilled in white block letters on the bow, was the Golden Venture. Its cargo was nearly three hundred illegal Chinese emigrants. Before reaching the Rockaways, the ship had sailed some seventeen thousand miles, from Thailand to Kenya, around the Cape of Good Hope, then across the Atlantic to New York.

The passengers—mostly adults, but a few children—were emaciated. They had been confined in the ship’s hold for months, subsisting on rice, peanuts, and purified salt water. It had been uncomfortably hot, and many passengers wore only underwear; when they hit the water, which was fifty-three degrees, some went into cardiac arrest. One Coast Guard officer who performed CPR on two men onshore recalled, “I could feel the gristle of their bodies, the cartilage. They walked up out of the water, collapsed on the beach, and died.”

Six bodies were recovered from the surf; four others were found later. By dawn, news helicopters were capturing live footage of the disaster. The Golden Venture accident was not an isolated incident: in the preceding year, more than a dozen ships had dropped human cargo from China on American shores. In April, a ship called the Mermaid 1, carrying two hundred and thirty-seven illegal Chinese, had been intercepted by the Coast Guard near the Bahamas. In May, the Pai Sheng had slipped beneath the Golden Gate Bridge at night, depositing two hundred and fifty passengers on a San Francisco pier. An internal Department of Justice report declared an “immigration emergency”; the San Francisco Chronicle heralded a “ smuggler ship invasion .”

Ringleader Of Human Smuggling Ring Dies, Leaving A Complex Legacy

For decades, Cheng Chui Ping smuggled thousands of people from China to the United States. She created a lucrative business and a robust network that brought immigrants through treacherous routes. Cheng died of cancer last Thursday in a Texas prison.

The 65-year-old, whom some affectionately called "Sister Ping," leaves behind a complicated legacy. Authorities referred to her as the mother of all snakeheads, a term used to describe those involved with human smuggling. Cheng arranged for as many as 3,000 people — most of whom were from China's Fujian province — to make their way illegally to the States. Her smuggling business collected a fortune of $40 million over two decades, and she charged as much as $35,000 per person. She also helped finance the now-infamous Golden Venture, a vessel carrying nearly 300 starving immigrants that ran aground in Queens, N.Y. leaving 10 of the passengers dead.

Cheng was ultimately arrested in the FBI's efforts to bust the notorious Fuk Ching gang, with which she had worked. In 2006, she was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison. (Her sentence was the maximum she could have received; her lawyer had tried to argue that her sentence shouldn't be harsher than the sentences of the gang members who'd testified against her, one of whom had confessed to eight murders.)
